Well, you've read the notes, you know all about The Big Mac, and now it is time for you to post until the Big Mac Cows come home.

And a very happy birthday to former dear reader Maya - who doesn't come around these here parts anymore, for whatever reasons - but we wish her a beautiful birthday and a wonderful year.

Good Morning!

BK - Is your house already wired as it were for a wireless modem setup or will you have to purchase an Airport unit to go with your new Powerbook?

-Or are there enough people with wireless nodes set up in your neighborhood that you can just "borrow" theirs? ;)

Mr. Mac Man said that rather than deal with a new modem from Adelphia, he just picks up an inexpensive Linux (?) device, and the current modem connects to that, and then he puts one router somewhere else in the house, so that all rooms will have signal.  The router also somehow makes the iTunes on the Powerbook play back wirelessly through my stereo speakers - don't ask me how, but apparently it works.

Strangely enough, that makes sense to me.

Well - HE should know.  I have also been considering Wireless....but since I only use the computer in one room...and don't have a laptop....why?

Moving to the MAC PAC!  I will anxiously await your writings on the subject.

I will forego the Allison Hayes Picture of the Week in order to save some Picture Space - but she will be back in 2005!!

My ASK BK question would be What novel that has never been filmed, do you wish someone competent would bring to the screen?

You can post pix all you like - we're really fine for quite a while.  The last purge was over four months ago, if I recall.

I'd love to see a film of Steven Millhauser's Edwin Mullhouse.  I'd love to see a film of the much-promised Time and Again.

And now for a few real Questions for Ask BK Day:

Were there any shows for which you produced the cast recordings of that you did not see the actual production?  If so, do you think the situation made it harder or easier for you to put the album together?

Was there an artist or group that came to you asking you to produce an album for them, but you turned them down... that then went on to have a successful album come out (produced by someone else)?

I can't remember an instance of doing a cast album where I didn't see the show.  Of course, the two studio cast albums, Drat! The Cat! and Night of the Hunter, I didn't see.  Oh, I didn't see As Thousands Cheer - but I went over the script and had several conversations with Chris Ashley about it.  It had closed, I think, prior to our recording it.  Oh, and same thing with A Grand Night for Singing, but they were both revues, so I don't think it was a problem not having seen them.  Otherwise, I'm pretty sure I saw everything.

I've been approached by lots of people and have opted not to do solo albums with them - I can't really remember any of them going on to big solo recording careers, though.  I've also been offered finished albums, which I chose not to release - Jessica Molaskey's Pentimento for one, which people seem to love.  It just didn't seem right for us at the time, even though it was a nice album.  There were a couple of people I had meetings with that I would have loved to do albums with, but the timing wasn't right or I couldn't get Varese to understand why we should do them.  One was Ann Miller, one was Lauren Bacall, and one was Nancy Sinatra - all three would have been fun to do.

I may have missed this as I have been errant and truant for one or two days so I apologize if I am repeating.

Here are places to donate to disaster relief due to the tsunami's. They are asking only for money because they can help bolster the ailing economies over there and your money will go further there too. They aren't out of the woods yet. Over 60,000 dead and there could be thousands more deaths due to famine and disease if they don't get enough aid. Sorry to bring something of a downer to the board, but it is very important nevertheless.

My ASK BK question would be What novel that has never been filmed, do you wish someone competent would bring to the screen?

Going back to my high school summer reading lists, I would be interested in seeing J.D. Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye" on screen.  Hmmm... And strangely enough, I think that's a role I could actually see Leonardo diCaprio playing.  -I can't remember the specifics of Holden Caulfield's physical description right now... so... Or maybe even Robert Sean Leonard.  ???  The book is just so "literary" to me, it would just be really interesting to see how a director would choose to flesh it out on the silver screen.

And from my sophomore reading list - "Catcher in the Rye" was from my freshman year - and I even went to a Catholic high school! - I'd like to see Alan Paton's "Too Late the Phalarope".  His "Cry the Beloved Country" has been brought to the screen, but I'd also like to see "Phalarope" too.  It's a meatier story to me.

BK I have a feeling you will love having a Mac. I have an HP laptop myself but I have been kicking myself for not getting a powerbook instead. I have many friends who use Macs and I have found them to be much more user friendly than PCs. My next computer will definately be a Mac. The video editing and burning lab at my college just got in the new G5 desktops and they are nice! I got to use them for a video project in my english class and when I was burning choreography DVDs for a production of Godspell I am in.

Esteemed BK:

In today's notes, you mention watching a film based on a novel by
Quote
James Hadley Chase, who wrote No Orchids for Miss Blandish.
I think it was very nice of Mr. Chase to dedicate a novel named No Orchids for Miss Blandish, whoever she was, but how is it you come to remember such a detail?  I am astounded by your limitless knowledge, as always!

Last week a DR mentioned the late Steve Tesich.  He wrote a play called SQUARE ONE, a two-hander that I worked on in Indianapolis.  Interesting play, good actors, okay production.

Mr Tesich came to opening night and autographed my script for me and had some very nice things to say.

Nice guy.

I have been hearing dreadful things about mudslides and building collapses out there on the west coast due to all this rain.  Are all you west coasters safe and sound?

I am sending vibes of sunshine and warmth, I hope they don't  dissapate over the midwest!

DR Ann & DR Elmore, how are you doing? Good health vibes to you both

I had a lovely chat with WFO last night, we have tentatively scheduled a get together on 1/2!!

DRJose, BK and I saw BED & SOFA together at the Vineyard, and I have a memory that we ran into Adolph Green either before the show or at the intermission.  I had been asked to score BED & SOFA if Polly Penn's usual orchestrator was unavailable.  He ended up with the job, which was quite an interesting choice of strings and piano, as I recall.

Merchant & Ivory announced a film version of Thomas Keneally's wonderful novel, THE PLAYMAKER, but it's never yet happened.  I'm not a fan of the stage version, "Our Country's Good," by Timberlake Wertenbaker, but the book is quite wonderful and would make a great film.

I just got an email from an old friend who's going to be in the 2nd season of CARNIVALE!  Now I know two actors in the series.  I missed the last episode of the first season because of WHERE'S CHARLEY?  So I need to Netflix the set and learn what happened before Jan. 9.  It's been years since I've seen my friend, Time Winters; we had breakfast at Du-Par's while I was recording Mr Jason Graae's Strouse album, and that seems several lifetimes ago.  Who am I all of a sudden, Shirley MacLaine?

DR Jose, I believe (though I can't find reference of it on IMDB) that CATCHER IN THE RYE (one of my favorite books as well) WAS made into a film.  As I recall, it was a complete mess, and was one of the things that pushed Salinger through the door of reclusivity.  He also banned it from being shown after its initial release, and his forbid the subsuquent filming of any of his other books.

I will try to find mention of it somewhere else, but I do remember reading this at one time.....

Rest in Peace.

Oh, no!  He was such a lovely man.  I watch the LAW & ORDER reruns just for him.  I knew he'd been going through cancer treatment and that he wasn't looking too good, but the publicity was all positive.  I was lucky to see him in PROMISES, PROMISES, 42nd STREET, and CHICAGO.  After I did MIRETTE at Goodspeed in 1998, I ran into him at some Encores! presentation and told him I'd just done a show with Harvey and Tom.  He clearly loved them as much as I did.  I need to call Harvey to thank him for his CD.

I remember seeing him in Chicago back in the 70's.

My daughter and I ran into him once in NYC when she was very little  3 or 4 , I guess. I introduced him to her as Lumier from Beauty & The Beast, when she looked skeptical he sang a few bars of   "Be Our Guest" for her.
Very kind.  A very brief moment, maybe 5 minutes, but I will remember him fondly for his courtesy and kindness to a little girl, and will pray for his soul & family

Well, since the picture posting is good to go again, here are a few photos I took Christmas day, before my camera crashed!

This is my neice Katie and my nephew John (my sister Sue's kids). John and Katie are two of the most important people in my life...I could not ask for better people to be related to! And Katie and I have been shopping buddies since she was about 3 years old! LOL!

Good morning all -

MBarnum - You have a good looking family!

bk and other south californian DR's...are you guys underwater?  I just saw some footage of some of the flooding on the news...looks ghastly.

Why am I up at such an early hour?  At least, early for me.  Good sleep seems to be escaping me lately.  Rarely do I not find myself waking up at random hours, and today I just couldn't get back to sleep.  So here I am.

Very very sad news about Jerry Orbach...he was a fine man and a great actor.  And too young for such news...

I have a question for BK and any others who have seen these films.

I'm referring to Francois Truffaut's Antoine Doinel series of films. I have to admit I have only ever seen THE 400 BLOWS. I thought it was fabulous, but I've never had any interest in seeing Antoine grow up. That film's melancholy open-endedness is what made it special for me, and seeing the other films takes the story away from my imagination and forces me to see Antoine's life from Truffaut's perspective.

Are the sequels REALLY so great that they're worth checking out?

I, too, am quite saddened by Jerry Ohrbach's passing.

Aside from his wonderful performances, we should also not forget that he was also the man who had the composure and wherewithal to have them bring in the curtain after Merrick announced Gower Champion's death.

I got to see him in CHICAGO a couple of times and 42nd STREET.

As far as I know, there were no segments of the spin off filmed. He signed to do it then the cancer was diagnosed and he went into treatment. I could be wrong about this but that's what I heard.

It's such sad news. I remember the scene from the film "The Prince of New York" starring Treat Williams. Orbach was in the movie. I don't remember all the specifics but I do remember the scene where he walked into the interregation room strode over to the desk where a group of police investigators sat, overturned the table and, I think, punched one of them in the stomach. At that point the audience cheered. The investigators were implying all sorts of things about him, IIRC (if I recall correctly in Internet lingo), which is why he decided to fight back. Great scene.

We are about to go out to the Greenmarket at Union Square and then to a Guitar store so Anthony can purchase one of his Christmas presents, a ukulele case. The weather in NYC is turning nice after a few days of cold. The sun is shining and tomorrow it will be in the 40s and on New Year's Eve it will be in the 50s! After our errands we will probably stroll the streets for a while.

I'm driving to Woodland Hills tonight to a sparkling dinner with friends I haven't seen in years. Their son, who will be present, is a senior NYU and is on his way to being a faboo film director. He "co-directed" a prize-winning claymation short with DD when both were in Grade Five. The little film was superb. Hilarious and very sophisticated (the fact that the boy's mom is one of the people who heads international TV animation at Disney didn't hurt. She didn't do the project FOR them, but she was a relentless task master.)
The young man and DD haven't seen each other in years - although they keep in touch by e-mail. A Kodak moment reunion is in the works. And these people are incredible gourmet cooks - so it should be a fun evening. -- If the rains don't mess everything up, that is.

Comments on some posts from last night:

1.TAR (Amazing Race).  I loved this recap episode.  There are some shows that know how to do recaps.  The key is that they must include lots of unseen footage.

And this recap did that.  I agree with DR DTM.  This show was interesting.  And it was fascinating to see what things were left out.  The editing has a big impact on who people root for, and I am very interested in watching how they handle this aspect of the show.

One thing I noticed is that Kendra got mad a lot more than we've seen.

I think that my 3 favorite teams (kendra and freddie, aaron and hayden, and kris and jon) should go far.  But unfortunately so will jonathan the screamer and his wife.  It's funny because he can be very nice (giving out candy, helping out the grandpaarents ...).  But he has a wicked temper and he is quite mean to his wife.

Hopefully the wrestlers will be gone next week (as long as there is not another grouping).  I'm also not crazy about adam/rebecca and the father/daughter.

3. Re: negative feedback at ebay.

I'm sure DRs Elmore and JMK are thoughtful buyers/sellers.  But I totally hate the way the feedback is setup.  Basically if you rightfully give someone negative feedback, then it makes sure that they idiot ruins your record.

I've had a couple of times that I wanted to say really bad things, but i knew the person would make up stuff.  So what I ended up doing was giving them the positive rating, yet tactfully writing about the problem.

For instance one seller did not respond to me for a couple of weeks and  then finally said they were sick.  So I wrote something like, "received item in good condition.  It was 3 weeks late, but seller advised that they were sick."

So all that person could do was comment under my positive remarks (yes, i was very ill), or something like that!

DRJennifer, it's quite interesting in my Feedback for the past several months:  I have nothing but things like "good communication, fast payer, great Ebayer, an example for all," then right in the middle is this negative one about being a lier (his spelling), no communication, etc. and this is the moron who took my money!  I think the feedback around it says more, but I'm bummbed by not having a 100% record.  I checked the Feedback on my nemesis and he had 6 negatives this month!  Hee hee . . .

My dad has been doing this like crazy recently.  He bought a dvd recorder, and has been transferring everything he owns (since he's decided videos will be worthless in 2 years).

What type of DVD recorder does he have?  Is he happy with the quality it produces?

I still haven't been able to play with my Chrissmaas prezzie, the video editor/dvd burner for the PC since I've either been entertaining, cleaning up before or after entertaining, shopping  and/or cooking for said entertaining, being entertained  or working ever since Christmas, (meantime DH & the vixter have been playing like crazy with THEIR toys!!! ) time for a coup methinks......

Sad news about Mr. Jerry Orbach.  I knew he was very sick.  I had the good fortune to see him several times in Promises, Promises, in which he was fantastic.  I also saw him twice in Chicago and once in 42nd Street.

I forgot that I dragged elmore to Bed and Sofa - his memory is correct - we did run into Adolph Green that night, and he was very sweet and we told him we'd done our Peter Pan album.

Yes, I like PRINCE IN THE CITY a lot. I remember being so bowled over by Treat Williams because the only thing I had seen him in prior to this was as the high voiced detective character in THE RITZ. It was probably Jerry's best movie role, too.

As a former SoCal resident, I can say that our current SoCal residents will be safe as long as they a) stay away from any cliffs, b) stay away from any areas that have had brushfires in the last year or so, and c) stay away from any lowlands where water can collect.

Dear Friend BK, you dragged me to many wonderful things, among them:
screening of JURASSIC PARK at the Directors Guild
  RUTHLESS with Miss Lindsay Ridgeway
that showing of PEPE (?) in some strange home theatre

I had forgotten the PETER PAN discussion with Adolph.  Didn't he make some comment about his version being the only one?  I saw him about a week before he died, and he was amazing:  lively, sweet, still had a sharp mind.  He had a nice nurse who wheeled him around the West Side in a chair.

I hope you'll drag me to many more things before this time is up!

Sad news about Jerry Orbach - wish I'd seen him perform in person, but, alas, will have to remember him on recordings.  DRvixmom, your story about him singing "Be My Guest" to your daughter brough tears to my eyes.

DRMBarnum - thank you for sharing your family photos with us.  I also use a Kodak EasyShare and have had some battery problems.  The tips provided on this site have been very helpful to me.  Of course, my forgetting to turn off the camera when it's not in use seem to be the biggest problem!

DR Jennifer, I missed last nights TAR...totally spaced it, so I am glad it was just a recap...although it would have been fun to see.

That said, I really like the dad and daughter (whose names I can never remember). The older couple were my favorites, but I was always afraid they were going to keel over or get hurt. Kris and Jon seem nice, but for the life of me I could swear they have not even been in this show until recently...I guess they have kept a REALLY low profile! And I have to admit to liking Bollo...but his wife is a maniac...but Bollo amuses me...!

Also, bk, welcome to the world of Mac users!  I didn't have a chance yesterday to mention that I use a Mac at home (we were early adopters due to my husband's work) and a PC at work.  Never, never, never have I sat at my desk at home and thought, "Boy, I sure wish I had a PC!"  I have even worked on Word documents in one place and emailed them to myself and continued to work, regardless of platform.

Just talked to Heidi at the Mac place I'm ordering from - very sweet.  She is suggesting I don't actually place the order until 1/10 because Mac World is coming then, and they frequently announce upgrades, and this computer I want would be cheaper then, or I could go with the upgraded one.  This came up because I want the larger 128 Graphics card rather than the one that comes installed.  They don't have any in stock that way (they usually do) and they said that it would take five to ten days to get it because of Mac World - so, I've called Mr. Mac Man and he's looking into all this for me.  I'll keep you updated, of course.  Waiting until January 10 is not a horrible problem except I was now excited to get it.

The weather in Olympia is a little brisk and foggy, but that's about it.  No problems here.

I wonder how many episodes of Orbach's new LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY series Jerry was able to film before he got too sick to work? Anyone have any clue. There was nothing about this in any obits I read this morning.

It's very, very sad. :'( And I can't imagine how they're going to write his death into the show.  That's never easy but it has to be done.  They can't just have his character leave.

When you "Reply" or "Quote" a message, below the "Message" box where you type your message is a box labeled "Attach:"  Just click on "Browse..." and find the picture that you want to attach to the message then click "Open."  The file path will then be in the "Attach:" box.

The only problem is that you can't preview the message with the attachement (unless that's changed).  You have to do all your previewing (for spelling and placement and all that) before you attach, which has to be the part of the last step before you "Post."  Hope that helps!

They must get their Mac from Mac World.  My guy is on this and will be calling me back later - what will be will be.  Either I'll have it Monday or Tuesday or the following week - no biggie either way except that I want it NOW.

My favorites of the Edgar Wallace films (thus far) are:  Das Indishce Tuch (The Indian Scarf), Zimmer 13 (Room 13), Der Hexer (The Magician), Die Gruft Mit Dem Ratselchloss (something about The Hidden Vault).  I'm enjoying the non-Edward Wallace one - it's all the same people and crew, just based on a James Hadley Chase story instead - it's not quite as wacky as the EW films, but it's really well done.

DR MBarnum, I wonder if they replay TAR episodes at all!

It was a really good recap.  It's funny but I dislike the teams you seem to like (the father/daughter are nice but seem slightly useless and will not win).

Umm, if you like Bollo (the wreslter, who I CANNOT STAND), then you might have been amused by what they showed last night.

One thing they rarely show on the shows is when the teams have to go through customs.  Anyhow, last night they showed how the wrestlers got through faster than the other teams.

Bollo (the guy) pretended to be "challenged".  So he would walk funny (like he was crippled in one leg) and they would announce the crowd that they needed to get through the line quicker cause her friend "was special" (or something similar).

I think Bollo being "mentally challenged" was actually not far off from the truth. :)

More TAR:

DR MBarnum, re: Kris and Jon

They showed some stuff last night which I am surprised that they didn't show before.  Kris is a darling.  They showed her helping out the friends (maria and someone) when their car kept stalling.

They also showed her at the beach in africa i think. She was swimming in the ocean with the kids saying how much she loved them.  They showed that in contrast to kendra whining about the poverty and how much she hated that "these people" kept breeding.

To answer your question, Kris and Jon have finished first a lot.  And I think they have not been the focus because they will be in the final 3.  And they are telling their story slowly.  I am in love with this couple.  They seem truly nice.

And because of the editing (and how much they showed kendra whining), I think her and freddie will also be final 3.  And of course we have the bad guy jonathan.  They will be top 3 or 4.

I can't figure out hayden and aaron.  I do really like them. And they seem to always finish near the top.  But as the teams continue to be bunched together, it's possible at any time for any team to go.

But i'd guess the wrestlers should go next week, followed by adam/rebecca and father/daughter.

Rest In Peace, Jerry Orbach.  PROMISES, PROMISES was my first Broadway show; I later saw him in CHICAGO and 42nd Street.  He was a class act and is a great loss to the Theater.

A Christmas trivia question:  What singer(s) introduced the carol "Do You Hear What I Hear?"

I found the coffee table book BROADWAY:  THE AMERICAN MUSICAL under my Christmas tree.  When you open the front cover of the book, there is a 2-page picture of several show posters, I assume in Shubert Alley, and a man with his arm around a woman leaning against the poster for MR. PRESIDENT.  Does anyone know who the man and woman are?

I had to go wireless in my house simply because I was told there there was no simple way to get a cable into my study without ripping up a wall or two.  A Linksys wireless modem\router was an exquisite solution, and allowed me to connect from everywhere via my laptop.

DR DTM mentioned the other day about wanting to convert all his VHS videos to DVD.

My dad has been doing this like crazy recently.  He bought a dvd recorder, and has been transferring everything he owns (since he's decided videos will be worthless in 2 years).

DR Jennifer, I'm leaning this way myself, either with a stand-alone DVD recorder unit or getting a combo TIVO/DVD recorder.  But I've heard from a few people that if the source video tape has too many jumps or glitches, the DVD will not record from it.  Do you know if your dad has come across any problems like that?

I'm also not happy at the notion of throwing away about twenty years worth of video tape cassettes.  It's not like there isn't already enough garbage in landfills already.  Maybe I can donate some of them to a local college theatre library?  I donno...

Love that barbecued chicken.  Faboo.  Yep, 1967 was Evening Primrose's only TV showing, part of the marvelous failed ABC Stage 67 series.  I also have the even rarer On the Flip Side with Ricky Nelson and Joanie Sommers, with score by Bacharach and David and direction by Joe Layton - unlike Evening Primrose (all copies look like crap because they're dupes of dupes of dupes) my On the Flip Side is spectacular - right off Miss Sommers' three-quarter inch tape, which was right off the master.

I really like Kris  and Jon, also.  They seem never to complain and they revel in every situation they're in.  I think my favorite clip from last night was of Kris when she kept laughing in the back of the car.  I'm hoping for them to win.

As for Mr. Yell-ow Guy, I'm hoping for a painful "accidental" death, but I guess that's not too likely to happen.

It was a shock to hear about Jerry Orbach.  I also thought that his prognosses was positive.

I saw him in Chicago twice and in 42dn Street once (it's a great shame that his performance wasn't the one captured in the Japanese video.)  I also saw him a few tables away from mine once in Barrymore's.  He had a terrific smile.

I had to go wireless in my house simply because I was told there there was no simple way to get a cable into my study without ripping up a wall or two.  A Linksys wireless modem\router was an exquisite solution, and allowed me to connect from everywhere via my laptop.

I've always thought that my favorite unfilmed book would be Mark Helprin's Winter's Tale, but I haven't read it in years and I wonder if it still holds up or if it's time has past (the second part of the book takes place during the new millenium.)

My sister has a wireless router (downstairs in her office) so that her daughter can use her computer upstairs in her bedroom.  It works very nice for my niece!

I read "Winter's Tale" when I was in high school...maybe even middle school and it went right over my head.  One of the few sections that I even remember about it had to do with someone trying to preserve lettuce??  I've done quite a bit of reading since then.  Maybe I should try to read it now.  I just might be able to understand it.  Mind you, I said "might!" (a Tom Lehrer reference)

Not bad.

Particularly since 60 degrees (C) would be quite unseasonable.

(60 degrees (C) converts to something like 140 degrees (F).   :o)

DR DTM, re: the dvd recorder question.

Apparently there are a number of options.  You have 1 hour dvds, 2 hour dvds and up.  My dad has been buying the one time only dvds (you can only record on them once).

And he's been using the 2 hour mode (for 2 hour movies ...).  Apparently it comes out MUCH clearer this way.

He had taped the Josh Groban concert on tape, and then he tried to transfer it, but not at the 2 hour speed.  And I don't think it came out well.  But everything he's been recording since (on the 2 hour speed) has come out good.

Well I haven't seen anything he's recorded, but he said the quality was so much better.

From what I've been told, most wireless routers have built-in firewalls or some other sort of built-in protection.  It shouldn't be a problem.

What speed you record these on will determine how long the recordings last. The top speed gives you a 1 hour DVD. The next best mode gives you a two hour DVD. I truly could not tell the difference between the one and two hour copies, so to save space, I record in the two hour mode (called SP on my DVD recorder). I can fit most movies onto one disc in SP mode. Works great!

From what I've been told, most wireless routers have built-in firewalls or some other sort of built-in protection.  It shouldn't be a problem.

Hmm.. Not exactly.  Firewalls are programs.  However, some internet service providers do provide firewall protection as part of their service packages.  Otherwise, there a couple of vendors (McAfee, Norton, etc.) that offer pretty reasonably-priced home firewall programs.

*Last year in DC, there were tons of reports of internet thieves driving around neighborhoods with powerful mobile internet set-ups in their vans, cars, etc.  They would drive around until they found an "open signal" then see what "fun" they could have and what information they could hack into.  Firewalls are highly recommended.  However, some OS's now have some sort of low-level firewall built in.  -At least that's what my brother - who sets up computers for a living - has told me.

Wonderful article about one of my heroes, Susan Sontag, in today's LA TIMES.... Excerpted below

Sontag's Life Is Testament To Democratic Meritocracy

By Tim Rutten, Times Staff Writer

Shortly after Susan Sontag died Tuesday in New York, an obituary on the BBC's World Service described her as "the high priestess of the American avant-garde."

So she was, in part.

But to take that topic sentence and its implications as the sum of her 71 years is to discount the example of an inspiring -- and uniquely American -- life.

Much that will be written about her in the weeks ahead will focus on her aesthetic and political legacy and, as the British Broadcasting Corporation's description suggests, on her status as an icon of what some would describe as the international intellectual elite. It also is worth considering, however, that she willed and worked herself into all that she achieved. She was not born to the life of the mind but to a consumptive fur trader, who died when she was 5, and his alcoholic wife, who once told her that if she didn't stop reading, she'd never find a husband. She received her secondary education at North Hollywood High School, from which she graduated at 15 before going on to Berkeley, the University of Chicago and Oxford.

The life Susan Sontag lived, in other words, was not one of an elitist icon, but of an ideal of democratic meritocracy.

In the interest of full disclosure, Susan was for many years a friend and, on occasion, a houseguest of this writer and his wife. Her only child, writer and commentator David Rieff, is a close friend and one of our son's godfathers. During a conversation not long after we met, we discovered that we both had been inspired at an early age by reading Jack London's "Martin Eden," the story of a rough seaman who sets out to win the affection of a middle-class girl through relentless self-education and, in the process, finds and tragically rejects success as a writer. It is a great, if sentimental, American story.

Susan's similarly ruthless pursuit of what she believed was truest and best inevitably conveyed a kind of elitism. Yet no matter how rarified the company, it was open to anybody willing to do the work to join. Her own drive for self-improvement -- and the conviction that knowledge and critical thinking were the tools to accomplish it -- never ceased.

Susan did not drive, and on many visits to Los Angeles this writer happily served as her chauffeur. The destinations always included any notable local museum exhibition and the restaurant Matsuhisa, where the meal inevitably began with two orders of one of the restaurant's signature dishes, toro tartare topped with beluga caviar. But usan's preferred method of filling time was bookstores. The personal library, meticulously cataloged by subject and language, that filled her Manhattan loft was something of a legend in literary circles and, in fact, has been acquired by the University of California, Los Angeles. Still, every visit to local bookshops would end with the purchase of another substantial box or two of books to be shipped home.

Wandering the stacks with her was a rare treat, because she paused not only over the new, but also the familiar and beloved.

"Do you know this?" she would ask, pulling a volume from the shelf.

If the answer was yes, a discussion of the book's merits and shortcomings had to ensue.

If you replied no, Susan's eyes would brighten and her voice climb half an octave: "Oh, but you must have this book. You must read it. It's fantassssstic. I'm going to buy it for you."

And so she did. In the bookcase around the corner from this desk are Stevie Smith's collected poems and W.S. Merwin's luminous translations of Chamfort's aphorisms, mementos of two such excursions and testimony to the capaciousness of her taste and enthusiasm.

Both qualities could make her a magnificently stimulating and utterly exhausting companion. No one this writer ever has known had taken so deeply to heart Albertus Magnus' famous admonition that "the greatest of all human pleasures is to seek the truth in conversation."

On one occasion we talked until after 2 a.m., then reluctantly went off to bed. A habitually early riser, her host rose before dawn and was surprised to find the light on in his study. There was Susan, sitting at the library table desk in a pool of lamp light, surrounded by books taken from the nearby shelves and scribbling into a notebook. "Where did you find these translations from the Philokalia (a collection of religious texts in Greek)?" she demanded. "I don't have them, and they're very interesting."

Over the years, Susan's single-minded confidence enabled her to revisit and reassess some of her own political and aesthetic positions, a process for which she received far too little credit. Sometimes, though, that single-mindedness made other lives and other choices somewhat opaque to her.

Leaving Los Angeles, for example, was so critical to her own embrace of the wider world that she regarded others' conscious decision to remain here as somewhat suspicious.

Once, after a long afternoon of work -- she over a set of galleys, and her host over a newspaper column -- there was conversation about life in Los Angeles and a walk around the yard and into the walled, gravel-pathed vegetable garden at the rear of the lot.

As her host bent over, as gardeners will, and absent-mindedly began to weed a bed of baby lettuces, Susan said, "Oh, now I get it. You live like a poet."

To the generations of Martin Edens to come, to all those Americans who believe that you can be born in Bakersfield or Boise and still aspire to live fully the life of the mind, Susan Sontag left an example -- and this advice:

"Be serious, be passionate, wake up!"

I don't know if I posted this in June, but in June of 2004, I left a church where I was Director of Music for 14 years because of contractual issues.  There was much more than that, but I don't want to get into it here.  I thought I would enjoy my life without my work in the church because I still had my work in the Catholic school system and such, but as it turns out,  I missed preparing choirs and such for Christmas.  Upon thinking about that, I realized I missed my work in the church as it was (and evidently still is) a big part of who I am.

I received word yesterday that the Director of Music at the parish where I happen to be the school music teacher is losing their Director of Music becuase of illness.  To make a long story short, I inquired about the job and received a call from the Pastor (I was busy, he left a message) asking (actually, hoping) that I was interested in expanding my ministry at the parish.

So, I'm asking for some HHW vibes as I go through these next few days chatting with the Pastor and hoping that this parish will work for all of us involved.

DRPanni, thanks for the article.  I believe the only thing I've ever read by Sontag was the Notes on Camp.  I still remember what a wave the article made in the theatre dept. around 1967 or '68.  We decided that people fit into three classes:  class, crass, and camp, eg:
Class: Jackie Kenedy
Crass: Jayne Mansfield
Camp: Dale Evans

Anyway, back to Sontag.  My last memory of seeing her name was when she and Annie Liebowitz had a child a couple of years ago.  Am I making this up?

Love that barbecued chicken.  Faboo.  Yep, 1967 was Evening Primrose's only TV showing, part of the marvelous failed ABC Stage 67 series.  I also have the even rarer On the Flip Side with Ricky Nelson and Joanie Sommers, with score by Bacharach and David and direction by Joe Layton - unlike Evening Primrose (all copies look like crap because they're dupes of dupes of dupes) my On the Flip Side is spectacular - right off Miss Sommers' three-quarter inch tape, which was right off the master.

Evening all!

I have a funny to share with all of you.  I hope I don’t offend my Jewish friends but here is what happened.  The new lady I work with is Jewish-the strict kind.  We get along great.  Anyway, She was looking everywhere for an employee’s file (who is Spanish) and went to the file room.

Soon, she came back and said she had got it!

At which point, I slapped my forehead and said it was a MIRACLE!  She found Jesus in the file room!  She had a blank look for a moment, then it hit her and she cracked up.

Ok, I know it was the Spanish version of the name but it’s spelled the same.

I really didn’t know Jerry Orbach but I am sorry to hear about his passing.

Congrats to BK for the new computer.  I hope it does everything you need or want it do without any problem.

I read in the paper that they are going to have wireless computer access for free in Downtown Tampa starting next month.  I’m waiting to get the hand out they are going to have that tells how to hook up to it.  My pocket PC should be able to connect once I get whatever hardware they say I need.  Won’t that be too, too?

I also read in the paper that the quake actually affected downtown Tampa.  They said you may not have felt it but the city rose and fell a little bit.  I’m wondering if the winds we had that night (that no one knew were coming) had anything to do with it as well.

Happy Birthday, Maya, where ever you are.  Have a wonderful day.

I forget (sorry) who said something about Errol Flynn movies being released?  Which ones were they?  I can’t WAIT!  I love Errol Flynn.

I’ve run out of time and must be off to the land of wuss.  Have a good evening all!  :)

I saw Million Dollar Baby this afternoon, Dear Readers.  It's a very good film.  Though it may have had a Hollywood budget, this is not your typical Hollywood film.  While female boxing plays a central role in the story, this film is about a great deal more than female boxing, and it takes a couple of very unpredictable turns.  I particularly liked the way Mr. Clint Eastwood and the screenwriters left it up to the audience to connect many of the dots.  Mr. Eastwood gives a fine performance, as does Mr. Morgan Freeman.  Miss Hillary Swank's performance now sits at the top of my list of best performances by a leading actress from this past year.

Glad to hear that Echo is doing a bit better. How's Bogie?

My question for Ask BK Day:
Dear BK, are we going to have live chats again?

Saw Jerry in two LAW & ORDER episodes tonight - one from Angie Harmon's last season on the show (on TNT-HD) and then on NBC at 10, one from last season. Both were reruns, but I thoroughly enjoyed them.

The evening news on NBC just had a wonderful tribute to Jerry Orbach.  The film critic doing the tribute said there are two of the new LAW & ORDER spinoff episodes that he'll be seen in.  I gather tonight's episode was dedicated to him as well.

No, DR Jane, I did not like LOST IN TRANSLATION at all. I found it slow and meandering and involving a bunch of people I really didn't care about at all. I am SO glad I did not pay to see it in a theater. A friend loaned me his DVD.

That's great news, DR elmore.

Yes, the shows tonight were dedicated to his memory on both TNT and NBC.

I understand they dimmed the lights of Broadway for him tonight, too. A most fitting tribute.

Look who finally got out of futon. I am relaxing as hard as I can before school starts again in January.

Actually, I did get up yesterday to go talk to my advisor on The Fifth Floor. Her name is Ms. Laws (pronounced "Stewart." Tell me that's not weird.) I got signed up for a whole mess of weird classes I don't want to take. Should be a perfectly miserable semester.

We got all your rain today.  Much needed but not very convenient.
The very butch Dan is on, I see.

I wish prosperity for all of us--- and soon, please very soon.

It is a shame about Jerry Orbach- a very talented man.  Not many like that.  However I still prefer Guy Haines' version odf "She Likes Basketball."

Good Evening!

Back from the show...  But before the show, I headed over to Pentagon City to check out some stuff at Macy's.  Surprisingly, it was not at all busy.  At least when I got there.  A bunch of the clerks looked visibly tired, frustrated and/or in "don't ask me a question" mode.

There was one chipper guy who was manning one of the registers, and he seemed OK.  But then I heard him answering a query from a lady who was waiting to be rung up.  She pointed out that the woman who was being rung up on the other side of the counter had actually gotten there after she had, and wondered why she was not the actual next person in line then.  Well, the clerk responded, "Well, it's up to you to speak up and put your merchandise down on the counter."  -What kind of an answer is that?!?!?  At least she was then the "next" person in line, and since two registers had opened up, she was being rung up at the same time the that the lady who had "cut in" was being rung up.  In any case...

I was on a mission to find a new tea kettle for my parents.  I noticed that the one I was used to seeing on the stove was no longer there.  My mom had resorted to pulling out her small copper kettle from the sideboard- I think this was the first time it had ever been used, and she's had it for ages.  It worked, but it took forever for it to heat and bring the water to boil - just bad design/construction.  After walking around a while, I finally found the table with the tea kettles.  So many choices, so many price points.  I eventually settled on the new OXO "uplift" one.  Very cool, and it was on sale.

Then while walking around a bit more, I decided to buy my parents a few new pieces of cookware.  -My parents - even though they are both in the food service industry - have a bad habit of continuing to use pots and pans way past the point that they're still functional - or even safe.  -Let's just say I was getting tired of finding pieces of non-stick coating in my food.  So...  After checking out the various displays, I finally settled on a 7-piece Cuisinart set - anodized and non-stick.  It too was on sale.  *I still think it's sort of misleading to label a lid as a "piece".  Yes, it's a 7-piece set, but it's only four pans and three lids.  In any case...

Once I got up to the register - and I ended up with one lady who looked like she was ready to go home hours ago - my Macy's card would not go through.  She tried it again, still didn't go through.  -That made her very "happy".  Well, she pointed to where the courtesy phones were, and I headed there and made the phone calls.  It turns out that it was a 'security' issue.  I had applied for the card while I was out in LA this past summer, and I had only used it in LA.  This was the first time I had used it on the east coast, and the computer was kicking out the sale as a precaution.  I also had no balance on the card currently, so that was causing a flag to go up somewhere in their system.  Well, I made my way back to the counter, got my stuff rung up again, and headed out to the car.  OH!  And the best of the while thing is that I also got a 15% discount off my entire purchase due to a promotion with the Macy's card!  *A woman behind was looking at the discount being tallied up on the register display, and she was wondering how I got it since the holiday coupons they had did not apply to some of the sale items.  Bonus!

-OK - that was long, rambling and boring...

In short, I went to Macy's and bought my parents a new tea kettle, and a set of cookware.  And it was all on sale, plus I got an extra 15% off the sale prices too!

:)

...And Pentagon City had recently installed a brand new parking system.  It's like those ones at airports where you pre-pay for your parking before you leave the terminal, then just put your ticket in at the gate and leave.  There are new, BIG signs all over the place telling you to take your parking ticket with you.  There are also BIG machines at each store exit to the garage which "talk", and ask you to take care of your parking fee now rather than later.  And then once you get to the exit lanes, there are BIG sign saying which lanes are for monthly parkers, which ones are for Cash/Credit Cards, and which ones of for Pre-Pay.  Well, they might as well take those signs down since there lots of drivers who kept having to call some attendants over to let them pay - they were in the pre-pay lanes.  Thankfully, mall management did have people at each gate, but still... READ THE SIGNS PEOPLE!!!!!!

OK... Rant over.

-By the way, good show tonight.  Eh...

ACK--- I just found out that the materials for "Zombie Prom" do NOT include vocal books... Damn Samuel French... damn them ALL!!!!

Hmmm... I wonder if this means that they just go ahead and send out extra copies of the p/v/c score.  When I did Three Guys Naked from the Waist Down a couple of years ago, this was the case.  -The show was not a "regular" property in their library, so there was no justification to spend the time and money to come up with vocal books.

*I still remember MTI's first set of books for Into the Woods - or maybe it was Assassins.  They had literally just cut and pasted the vocal lines from the P/C score into a part!  Of course, since the books were the standard vocal part size, the notes and words had been reduced to very small print.

OH, so does this mean you've settled on Zombie Prom?

With today's computerized cash registers, clerks usually have to "log in" to use the register.  And, of course, a clerk can only log in to one register at a time.  Mr. Chipper was probably logged into Ms. Cut's register.  This keeps in-house theft down, and also helps management keep track of which clerks are making errors and need extra training.

It would have made more sense if a sign had been placed on the other side of the counter, asking customers to use the side where the clerk was standing.  Not that many customers read signs when it makes them do extra work.   :P
