In an hour I shall head out to my doctor's appointment.  I really have no idea how long this morning's trip will take; some days 40+ minutes, on others over 75, depending on traffic.

The housecleaning continues.  My goal is to finish this one closet today.  I have the top self to do.  I also hope that Val can fins me another carton for these clothes to tossing.  Then I can call one of the charities that picks up donations.

Before I left the house I texted the MTA bus info to see when the next 104 bus would arrive.  I couldn't make the bus due in 1 minute but I could make the next die in 10, estimated arrival at my stop at 7:40.  Well, IU forgot school's back in session and millions of kids are riding for free so to hell with the paying customers.  The bus arrived at 7:55, crammed to the gills, and the one behind it (yep, they back up and everyones screwed) was equally crammed.  The text message told me the next bus would be in 15 minutes,  I realized that I was screwed and could not make the appointment.  So I called my HMO and rescheduled for Sept. 27/  I also scheduled my flu shot for tomorrow morning.

This is one of those days where I detest this City and find no glamor or value in living here.

This week I've watched adaptations of Victorian-set novels.  The first, Fingersmith, was based on a lesbian faux-Victorian romance and a BBC follow-up to the same author's Tipping the Velvet.  Just before the end of the first half, after I'd written it off as soft-core lesbian porn, there was a surprise twist that made me reconsider my assessment and made me curious to see where it was going.  Well, it went to a lot of betrayals, murder, sacrifice, and too many collisions of circumstance.  The cast was great, but I thought the race to the end glossed over much of the storytelling.

Then I watched Angel, starring Romola Garai, and I still have no idea what exactly the point if the film was.  The leading character is a rather obnoxious, rather stupid, egomaniacal writer of popular fiction of little literary merit who appears to live in a fantasy world, and the director seems to have filmed it as a comic opera cotton candy, spun-sugar piece of fluff.  The music kept saying "isn't this funny and romantic?" as the plot became darker and her fantasy world destroyed her.  I find Garai irritating here much as she was in the BBC adaptation of Emma: At times her reactions seem far too contemporary for the period, although I liked her very much in the Ian MacKellan King Lear.

The other irritating fact was that the film covers Angel's life from around 19800-1920, yet I never felt the fashions changed with the times.  I did like Sam Neil and Charlotte Rampling as her publisher and his wife.

DR Elmore, when is your kitten coming home?

I don't have one yet.  I'm currently cat-proofing the apartment.  All this cleaning and weeding I'm doing is to make room for one - or two! - and clean up any residue of the termite poisons from 2008 that might be under bookcases or back in crevices where a kitty might be curious.

I do check the shelter sites and Craig's List daily and fall in love over and over.  Here are my current loves.

I had a Siamese from 1962-1977 or 78 and adored her.  My grandmother's house where I lived until I was four had several Persian cats.  We had a calico before the Siamese.  Last week I wanted a black kitten, Midnight.

The Bed-Stuy shelter in Brooklyn has a little grey runt, Petunia, that I just adore.  She's just learned to eat soft food, but they fear she's not going to grow and thrive.

Had a chili, cheese, and onion hot dog and a few fries.  Have just put in licensing requests with Sony/BMG for several soundtracks as well as two classical CDs.  I would also love to license the original Gold and Fizdale recording of Brubeck's Points on Jazz - one of my childhood loves - but it's short and I have no idea what to pair with it - way back in the Bay Cities days I was going to pair it with Howard Brubeck's Dialogues for Jazz Orchestra, but that's come out on CD already and most have it.  So, I'd need something else, perhaps another ballet of some sort.

I think I'm basically keeping an eye on things so that if these babies are not adopted, I can sweep in and save them from euthanasia.  I would do that in a pinch, but I suspect that by the time I'm ready to go to 110th Street and put my money down, there will be several more rounds of intense kitty crushes.

It turned out this time. Yay! Not like the last time, which was quite a dismal failure.

Not only is MBarnum not here anymore (he lives only on Facebook now and left for a silly reason having to do with another dear reader), but today on Facebook he amusingly did what we do here and have done here since day one - a topic of the day.  I had to say something, oh, yes, I had to say something - he admitted it. :)

The smoke blocked the warmth of the sun and I felt a bit chilly in my summer clothes.

And now, I must go!  My friend Margo are going to have dinner at Red Robin, then go see two movies shown by the Olympia Film Society (http://olympiafilmsociety.org):  The Big Sick, and Brigsby Bear.

Be back later!

Well, we saw "The Big Sick" and really enjoyed it.  It's based on Kumail Nanjiani's real life story and how he met his wife and shortly thereafter had a medical condition that put her in the hospital where they had to put her in a medically induced coma.  It was funny and touching and sad and ultimately uplifting.  Highly recommended.

TOD 1:

Wait Until Dark
Thelma and Louise
Psycho
Gloria (The original)
Sudden Fear

I love the original Gloria!  I didn't like the remake at all.

Smokey looks like my old cat, Benjamin Stone (yes, a Sondheim reference)

You know the song "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley* Square" by The Manhattan Transfer?  I've always wanted to have a cat named Berkeley*. :)

*pronounced 'Barkly'

I don't do this very often but our friend Cliff sure could use some super strong good vibes.  He has been in the hospital way too long, this time, and needs to go home.

Try to remember
When you were so tender

(from the physical therapy musical)

Try to remember
When you were so tender
That one light touch
Made you holler

(feel free to revise, Fred)

I'm no Fred, but just to make the lyrics scan correctly:

Try to remember
When you were so tender
That one light touch
Would make you holler

;D

I did not realize it is spelled Berkeley.  As for one of my beloved 40's songs, I do not associate with The Manhattan Transfer ;D
