Title: THE DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS
Post by: bk on January 01, 2005, 11:59:02 PM
Ell, you've read the notes, you know there is one less veil to answer, one less egg to fry, and now it is time for you to post until the veiled cows come home.

I have.  I have noticed that it does not feel like a Sunday, hence I will not be brunching, but I shall be munching, oh, yes, I shall be munching.

I think I've posted this before (it's been quite a while, if I have...I'm too lazy to check), but it's entirely relevant to the current conversaton:

SUNDAY
Written by Miller, Conn, Styne, Kreuger

I'm blue every Monday
Thinking only of Sunday
That's one day when I'm with you
It seems I sigh all day Tuesday
I cry all day Wednesday
Oh my how I long for you

And then comes Thursday, gee it's long it never goes by
Friday makes me feel like I'm gonna die
But after payday it's my fun day
I shine all day Sunday
That's one day when I'm with you
Wanna see you next Sunday!

Here's a news bulletin: I got very tired of the slowness I was having on various Internet sites - so, I opened up IE and went via that browser, and guess what?  Faaaaaaast.  No slowness whatsover.  So, what does this teach me?  AOL is ridiculous.  Slow, lethargic and most annoying, and if it wouldn't be such a chore to change my e-mail address, I'd just nuke AOL at long last.  But, it's too complex to deal with for various reasons.

Better a dance of seven veils than a dance of seven voles.  Not that I have anything against those little rodents, not really, but terpsichorially they aren't the best bodied around.  I mean, they're stout.  Round.  Rolly-poly.  Portly.  If they're driving along a country road and their car suddenly gets a flat, they have no trouble finding a spare tire.  Get my meaning?

That, and if they're going to dance around like that, they should hire a decent choreographer.  They look like a bunch of lemmings.

Sorry about being e&t yesterday, but I've come down with a dratted cold, the sort that makes my throat raspy and chest burn.  Bleh.

Der B and I had a marvy New Years Eve at our favorite restaurant, Cafe Zeus.  Owners Charles and John were hard-pressed, due to the disappearance of some of their staff (one in the kitchen, one on the floor, and their entertainment), but everything came off very very well.

Since it was a special NYE dinner, Charles and sous Cliff had most everything well in hand, so the kitchen never lagged.  And General Manager Robert dragooned his lover, Scott, into helping bus dishes.

First came the appetizer course, with a nice piece of seared fois gras, a chorizo-stuffed mushroom cap, and some roasted brie.  For the soup, der B had the lobster bisque, while I tried the potato and shallot, which had a nice kick to it provided by some fresh peppers.  This was followed by a bit of roast duck with a raspberry/lemon sauce (der B) or a tasty shrimp and lobster Newberg (moi).

A little palate-clensing lemon sherbet provided a break before the meat course, a choice between prime rib (for me) or venison (for he).  A nice mixed-greens salad  with apples, Roquefort and almonds was the fifth course, and then came the dessert.  I had the chocolate truffle mousse, der B had the roasted pears in pastry, and they were both wonderful.

Now, about that entertainment.  Something like around one in the afternoon, the singer (and combo) called to announce that she wouldn't be singing that night.  John was on the frantic side, but Charles (in the midst of all his cheffing) told him to go through their cards and check on the Internet to see if anyone was available.  As it happened, a woman who had worked with them before was free and in town.  In fact, she had just flown back in from Los Angeles.  However, Viki Dee (http://www.vikidee.com/) (for such was and is her name) didn't have her keyboards with her, or any of her music, and she'd broken her foot.  No problem, she could sing sitting down and John was able to scrape together a kareoke machine at the last minute.  And, as they always do at such times, it all came magically together and she was wonderful and her music was wonderful and...

And the clock hands came together and with glasses of champagne everybody toasted in the new year.  John and Charles' two black Labs came bounding in, joyously welcoming everyone and sticking their noses where only dogs can get away with sticking.

They'll be closed for the next couple of months, business being very slow until mid-March.  Charles will be testing new recipe ideas on John, Robert is heading to Colorado to attend butler school (which der B and I predict will turn him into a combination of Lurch and Joan Rivers), and we'll just have to find a different hang-out until they open again.

And I should be rid of this cold by then.

Hello, DR Hisaka!
Title: Re:THE DANCE OF THE SEVEN VEILS
Post by: Jrand73 on January 02, 2005, 04:04:48 AM
I have a question - in a movie such as THE OPPOSITE SEX - all those old musicals - when a choreographer staged a number - did he do the whole number even including the sections of the dance when there would be cutaways to the audience - or close ups of just certain main performers?

Did he decide or did the director or editor decide when the cuts would come?

Some of the cuts in the title tune were obviously made because what the performers were doing could NEVER be accomplished on a stage - but what about the "stage" numbers?

What the hell am I talking about?

Happy New Year everybody!  I have been e&t once again and I thought I'd start the New Year off my posting and I'm already a day late.  I spent the first day of 2005 driving 12 hours in my car to Illinois.  Thankfully along the way I could listen to some cd's I got for Christmas:  Lost In Boston II and Unsung Musicals II; I'm trying to catch up on those collections.

Today I start rehearsals for JOSEPH/DREAMCOAT, not one of my favorite shows, but I'm happy to be working.  For three months at least.

Best wishes to all in the New Year!

Hi all!

I'm sitting here enjoying a cup of Honey Lemon Ginseng tea with honey and a bit of cream.  Very yummy.

I don't know if I've said it on line--I know I've thought about it.  Can't remember typing it.  They should come up with a tea house like they have the coffee houses.  There are just as many (if not more) flavors of tea as there is coffee.    It would give old StarBucks a run for their money.

No avitar, in case you noticed.  I tried to put the dragon one back but it wouldn't work for some reason.  Also it seems I have changed computers since I posted that last photo of me because I couldn't find that one either.

I don't have time to recrop the photo and post it right now so I shall be blank until this afternoon when I get home and have time to mess with coming up with something new.

Must run I have the usual shopping to do for doggie food/treats (some human food as well) then I am going to see POTO the movie.  I shall let you know what I thought when I return.

Have a good one!

I think it is probably my least favorite popular show of all time. I really have never liked it, even before it was so overproduced as a cash cow for every high school, college, and community theater in the land. Oh, I know others adore it, but its charms have ALWAYS escaped me.

Glad you have the work, however.

It's going to be an atypical Sunday for me. I'm going to pick a friend up at the airport this afternoon, and then we're heading to my favorite Chinese buffet for dinner. I've been looking forward to that all week.

I guess will be trying to finish up the rest of the DICK VAN DYKE Season 4 boxed set. These are some REALLY funny shows.

I always browse the web via IE alone rather than the IE embedded in AOL.  Too much other stuff happening in the background on AOL while you browse - most unseemly.  Additionally, you can't use some of the IE shortcuts in AOL.  My favorite is using the F11 key to toggle back and forth between Full Screen Mode.  Comes in handy when the website you're browsing is very wide and/or "tall".  You can also configure your hot button and Favorites/History/etc. with this function so that the menus "go away" when you're looking at the page in question.  And then once you drag your mouse back to the left, the menus "slide" back in.  -Did that make sense?

My other favorite shortcut is the Ctrl-Enter macro.  When you want to bring up a website that has a standard web address of www.____.com, all you have to do is type in the main name of the website - the ____ part - in the address window, then hit Ctrl and Enter, and it automatically "fills in" the http://www. and .com part. of the URL.

George now I shall have to take a visit to Fred Meyer.

Sandra the pizza looks good enough to eat for breakfast.

Matt H I don’t bake much anymore because I am the one who eats most of it.  Keith has far more willpower than I do.

RLP thank you for your cornbread recipe.  :D I’m looking forward to baking some.

TCB I hope you are feeling better by now.

Bruce congratulations on reaching 8,000.
If they ever open a Trader Joe’s here I shall try the cornbread, along with their blintzes I hear are very good.

Panni how was the pig?  I’m so impressed you managed to save it so long, which shows how much it meant to you.
I think your New Year resolution to eat healthier is great, to me that also means munching all day on healthy food, not junk.

Bruce for some people, like myself, three meals a day is not the way to eat.  I need to eat small amount throughout they day to keep my body balanced.

Has anyone noticed it doesn't feel like Sunday?

Well, even though it doesn't feel like a Sunday, I KNOW it is a Sunday since I will be heading back to Richmond tonight after the tonight's show.  Day off tomorrow - which is a Monday.  Of course, "normal" people get two full days off a week, usually a Saturday and a Sunday.  However, renegades and pioneers like myself only get one full day off a week.  And it's usually a Monday.

Hmm... I may have to rethink my line of work...  Hmm...

In any case... It actually does feel like a Sunday since the local NPR station is playing some of the syndicated shows that I don't like too much.  I'd prefer music to accompany my Sunday morning rather than talk and musings.  -And some strangely loud and "inappropriate" music used for the bumpers.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

Well, like I mentioned previously, it does feel like a Sunday.  And it better be a Sunday so I can head back home to Richmond tonight.  I have lots of stuff planned for tomorrow in Richmond.  As long as I don't sleep in, I should get everything accomplished, as well as have some "social time" in the evening.

I, too, have been fighting off a cold, albeit a small, slight one.  But it may just be my allergies too - I swear this is something in my parents' house I'm allergic too - I know, I know, I've said that before.  -I do know that there seems to be a lot of dust in this house, so that could be it.  In any case, I just hope the runny nose abates by the time I get back to my apartment in Richmond tonight....

OK.. I'm ramblin', ramblin', ramblin'....

I got a show to do... Well, two shows to do today...

Laters...

Hopefully, dear reader Panni will answer dear reader Hisaka's post.

I was just about to answer DR Hisaka's post before I was excoriated to do so...

DR Hisaka - How sweet of you to find the post!
I don't know what "THIS" refers to. I have a feeling it might have been the new board, but I'm not sure. As I said in reply to your first post on the subject, I started posting because bk kept suggesting that I try it -- that I'd like it. I was dubious - it didn't seem like something I would enjoy, plus I'd seen a few other "chat" sites and they were populated by illiterate morons, so I really didn't think I'd be interested. But then I actually took a look - met all the wonderful people around here, and realized that bk was right all along. This was the ginchiest, most happening  place on all the Internet. A veritable United Nations, as well! So here I am, almost 6000 posts later...
And we all lived happily ever after.

Good morning all

Well, I had a bit of an adventure whilst driving over the mountains yesterday.  I set off from Ellensburg at around 9 pm, had no real trouble with the weather because the sanding trucks had been through.  This, however, caused me a different problem...a lot of dirt and grime being sprayed up on my windshield.  I quickly ran out of wiper fluid trying to keep it clean, so by the time I reached the west side of the mountains, I could barely see anything.  I decided to pull off in North Bend, a small town just on the edge of the pass, and get some wiper fluid.  There is a gas station right off the exit, so I intended to pull off in there.  However, being barely able to see anything, I could only guess where the road was.  This, combined with certain other factors involving my own stupidity, resulted in me driving headfirst into a ditch.  Thankfully this ditch had no water in it, and I'd taken it as such a low speed that no damage was done to the car, but I was indeed stuck.  So I got out, surveyed the situation, and called AAA to come and get me out.  It was more embarassing than anything else.  There I was, with my car at a 45 degree angle sticking out of this ditch, me standing there trying to appear casual, wrapped in about three coats to keep me and my sugar gliders warm...naturally everyone had to stop and take a gander.  A few boys in their souped up pick-up trucks stopped and offered their assistance...but I felt it best to wait for the professionals.  Pretty soon the cops showed up, of course, and wanted to know if I'd been drinking...which of course I hadn't.  But they stayed around to make sure no one else on the road ran into me.  All in all, a rather unpleasant experience...but thankfully both the car and I were unharmed and able to drive away.  Thank god for AAA roadside assistance.

What better way to kick off a new year than driving one's car directly into a ditch?

Allo! Allo!

I am finally back AND fully rested from my New Years Eve exploits. I ended up staying up til 8 or 9 in the morning playing board games I had not played in a long long time. (Clue and Life) I also introduced one of my friends to Apples to Apples for the first time and she now has a new favorite game. We spent quite a bit of the evening/morning just reminiscing about the past two years and I think I came away with an even greater appreciation of these last two years of my life. It truly has been an amazing experience in college and at the lovely place where I live.

I also found out about 2 hours before it happened that two of my friends from church were going to get engaged. Well she said yes when he proposed to her at midnight so I will have another wedding to go to in the next few years. I am not sure if I have gotten used to the idea of my friends getting married yet, but I am sure I will in time. All part of growing up. :)

The big question is, since it's Sunday even though it doesn't feel like Sunday, should I have breakfast.  For example, I could rustle up some ham and eggs, both of which I happen to have in the home environment.  Or, I could go out.  If I cook the eggs do I have them scrambled or over medium?  Decisions, decisions.

It's still gray out but at least there hasn't been any rain.

I've gathered everything I think Mr. Mac Man will need on Tuesday morning, so he can just breeze through everything.  I may have to run out during his visit if he needs me to buy some kind of wireless port and if I need to buy a Mac-specific mouse (I'd rather use the one I'm used to, so I didn't get one the other day at the Apple Store).

The Powerbook is, of course, just sitting in the dining room begging me to at least open the box.

Ann -- Thank goodness (your's, not mine), that you are okay and that the car is okay.  Since you didn't add anything else about your return home, is it safe to assume that your apartment was not a swimming pool when you returned?

I am feeling a little (no, a lot) better this morning. Thank you for your good wishes.  After I finally went to bed last night, my stomach continued to talk loudly all night, but other than that settled down.  I am afraid that Angel and Nicky were less than thrilled by the talking stomach, and they spent most of the night in the other room.

I feel so bad about missing Sharry's party last night.  Not just because I had been looking forward to it, but because I was supposed to sing. But, it would not have been a wise idea last night!

Well I just ran into something while doing a search that has me thoroughly confused. I do searches on A Tale of Two Cities using different keywords in search engines to see if I can find any new articles or news. I just did a search today and the page I keep on my website with updates about the show now appears on the first page of results for info involving the show. I keep a much better record of articles and news than the actual site so I usually direct people to my page if they want to keep up to date with the show.  What confuses me greatly is I did not pay to get this page added to the yahoo search. I wondered if Ball State added student websites to search engines, but when I tried searching for other pages on my website there were no results. Fletcher is one unhappy Dalmatian right now.  It seems that he ate der Brucer's toe, and he's being punished for the crime.

More accurately, he ate the toe to one of der B's shoes.  I think der B would have noticed sooner if it had been his actual toe, to which he is rather attached.  All the same, the dog has been sent to his cage, and is quite unhappy with his predicament.  I'm not sure he's aware that it's his own doing that led to his being crated.

Meanwhile, I've made an interesting discovery.

I was listening to the London Cast Recording of Noel Coward's Sail Away, particularly Elaine Stritch's rendition of "Why Do the Wrong People Travel," and it occurred to me that her delivery is almost exactly like that of Tom Lehrer's.  She swings into notes the same way, her timing is the same.  They almost have the same voice!

But I bet Marlon Brando found her a more interesting date than Lehrer would have been.

I have been hither and thither and also yonder, but I still have not found a seventh veil.  Lots of fifth veils and third veils, but seventh veils are, apparently, as scarce as hen's teeth, and I think you know how scarce hen's teeth are these days.

Ann, great news that you're okay!  But please don't leave us hanging...did you get your wiper fluid refilled?? :o

I am late arriving to the partay because, though it may indeed not feel like Sunday, it must be, because I had to be up at the crack of dawn (no mean feat) and play two services at the church I work for.   Since I had not slept well last night, that was quite difficult.  I came home and promptly crashed (though not like Ann) for almost 4 hours.

Anyhoo, no one else has commented that DGM (that's Dear Global Moderator in internet parlance) BK coined yet another new word in the notes (aside from ell):  seque (with a Q).  Perhaps that's Olde English for seek.

I am also sick of AOL (who isn't?), but, likewise, am loathe to change because of my website and FF article.  My sister just signed up with another ISP after many years on AOL and after she emailed me her new address, I responded, "NOOOOOO, don't leave me here by myself."

No worry. Some of us silly folks are still around and will likely remain AOL slaves just out of sheer laziness and no desire to go through the hassles of trying to end service with them. I understand it's not a pleasant experience.

Jane - the gliders didn't seem to suffer any problems from being out in the cold.  I had them in their pouch, under my shirt right next to my skin, plus a warm coat and a fleece wrap over me...so I think they were alright.  They were very glad to be home.  They started barking at my mom this morning when she got up...she was a little unnerved by it...

Ann I’m sure your Sugar Gliders were nice and warm where you kept them.  Your mother should be glad they were only barking instead of making that horrible noise they do when they are scared.

I'm back!  I liked everything about the show except for Barry Day's "concert" narration of rhymed couplets!  Just give me the scenes and let Mr Walton have a good time staging them.  I don't need Kathleen Widdoes running in and out telling me where we now are and why!

It was great to see so many WHERE'S CHARLEY? buddies, and afterward, Bruce Pomahac and I went for a lovely Italian dinner where I ate way too much.

Audio CD storage - we are in the market for a "tower" of some sort to store our growing collection (now about 150 and sure to expand).  I'd like something for the corner next to my new radio/CD/cassette/record player.  Floor to ceiling would be nice, with about a 15 square inch footprint at most.  Any ideas for stores, catalogs, online shopping sites?  Surprisingly, my best possibilities so far are at target.com

I saw Hotel Rwanda today, Dear Readers.  You think you've got tsuris in your life?  Try finding yourself in the middle of a genocide.  I am embarrassed to say that I was unaware, until seeing this film, of the horrific violence between the Hutu and Tutsis in Rwanda (a one-time Belgian-controlled country in Africa) not very long ago.  The film indicates at its conclusion that one million people lost their lives during this ethnic clash.  Mr. Don Cheadle, whom I have not seen in a film before, does a very fine job as the hotel manager--a mere corporate employee/everyman--who heroically shelters over 1200 refugees at the hotel he manages.

This film is in very narrow release right now, but will go wide at the end of the month.  If you're choosing between this and Meet the Fokkers (or however you spell it), see Hotel Rwanda first.

In order to see Hotel Rwanda today, and Million Dollar Baby last week, I had to sojourn to The Grove.  These were my first and second visits to the aforemention The Grove.  I had avoided The Grove on principle until these two visits.  The Grove is one of those outdoor "entertainment centers" (do not call it a "mall") that out-Disneylands Disneyland.  Developments like this feature ersatz architecture, built-in theme, and much ado over the very same stores that you might find in Anytown, U.S. of A.

What makes matters worse at The Grove is that despite claims by the developer that this mall entertainment center would be neighborhood-friendly (it is adjacent to the landmark Los Angeles Farmers Market), in reality its streetscape is rather fortress-like.  Any development that features an eight-level garage with computer-driven signs that tell you that all eight levels are FULL FULL FULL FULL FULL FULL FULL FULL, I can assure you, is NOT neighborhood-friendly.

There's a Pacific Theatres cineplex of something like a gazillion theatres at The Grove that manages to snare freshly released films that only show on one or two screens in L.A. and New York when they first come out.  I've made it a goal to see as many of the Golden Globe- and Oscar-nominated movies as possible before the statuettes are handed out, which is what led me to visit this deplorable concentration of commerce.  Maybe next year I'll be willing to wait until the nominees go to wide release.

DR Jay - What I find ironic about these kind of developments (I've been to several here in Ohio), is that real downtowns are decaying because all the retail has gone out of business and now we have fake "downtowns" to replace them!  BTW, my family spent a lovely summer Sunday at the LA Farmers' Market a few years ago.

Well, let me give you my rave right off the bat. I have the 80 gig model (bought two years ago), and I love it; the best investment I ever made. The hard drive works as a mini-Tivo unit with many of the same features as Tivo and some that some Tivo units don't have (like the ability to edit recordings to take out commercials before you dub onto a DVD-R for keeping). The DVD-R/RAM part of the unit makes flawless copies, and, of course, you can dub from the hard drive onto the DVD-R/RAM.

Any questions, just ask.

Panni:  my brother-in-law did the trailers for Ray.  He was raving about Foxx's performance this summer when he and his family were up here on vacation.

I am very excited because I have gotten quite a ways on a little project I've been nursing for almost a year.  Though I've made my living for most of my adult life in music, I actually got my degree in English after having won several (apparently, or so I was told at the time) presitigious national awards for my fiction and essays.

Maybe it is BK's inspiration in tackling a novel, but I am now writing what I think will be a totally groovy thriller, kind of Dan Brown meets Ira Levin.  It doesn't have the built-in structural twist of BK's latest, but I think it has a plot twist or two (or three) that will keep most people guessing.  It also addresses several religious issues that hit close to home for me, being a dreaded half-breed who has regularly shuttled between the Jewish and goyische worlds for most of my life.

Whew, self-confessional over (at least for now).

You want to know why the biggest DVD site is the biggest joke - read this "review".  If these "critics" cannot construct a simple sentence then why should they be taken seriously.  And the number of times he uses the word "here" in this "review" has to be some kind of record (he also mis-spells it as "hear", too).  "This here... "This here..."  I mean, if I wrote like that I wouldn't have the nerve to post it, nor would I want anyone to KNOW I wrote like that.  I'm sure he's a very nice fellow, and very young, but how can a DVD site like that purport to be anything other than a joke with "critiques" like that.  And if you dare to criticize, watch out - they come after you like Bruce the Shark, saying, "How dare you bash these wonderful "reviewers" who do all this for free?"

Well... Both shows went well today.  And everyone seemed a bit more rested and rarin' to go today too.  And due to some Krispy Kreme donuts and some most unseemly pre-show conversation in the greenroom ;), the second show went by pretty fast.

:)

-I even made it back to Richmond before midnight!  I pulled into my space in the back around 11:45.  Actually, I pulled into the space next to my space since my space was occupied.  I can't tell if the new guy upstairs is the culprit, or if it's my roommie's b/f...  Anyhoooo, I made good time back to Richmond.

I don't need a copy of the radio show (I hate listening to myself), but I'm sure there might be a dear reader or two who might want it.

I'm craving something sweet - but there is nothing sweet in the house except some vanilla ice cream - BORING. And it's raining heavily outside.

Of course I'm not craving anything sweet since I had two pieces of Pecan Pie with ice cream.

I do remember (a Sondheim reference) that there were several who said that they did, but I don't remember who.  If anyone wants a copy, just let me know!

And in more health news...

I have this thing on my left foot.  I noticed it the other morning.  I thought I had spilled a drop of juice or soda or something on my foot, but when I went to wipe it away, it turned out to be a sort of cut.  It reminds me of a cigaretty burn - it's the size of a cigarette end - but since I haven't been around anyone who smokes lately - at least not in my bare feet.  I'm thinking it may just be a spot of skin that got rubbed off by my shoes/laces - sort of a blister.  Or maybe it's some sort of bite...  In any case... It doesn't really hurt - unless I touch it, or put some hydrogen peroxide on it - like I just did a few minutes ago.  I'll see what it looks like in the morning, and if it looks worse I'll get some of those Band-Aids with the built-in antibiotic in the pad.  -Of course, since it's on the top of my foot, and I've had to wear shoes and socks, it hasn't exactly had too much opportunity to heal in a proper environment.... Ah, well...

Hope this didn't gross anyone out...  My apologies if it did...  -I could take a picture of it if you'd like...

;)

BK - I actually would go ahead and open the box.  As some other DRs have suggested, it's probably a good idea to make sure everything got shipped.  And to make sure you actually got a new one, and not some previously opened product.  -And you can also see if there are any forms to fill out for your warranty, etc.  -You don't want any unwelcome surprises come Tuesday when Mr. Mac Man comes by to get everything set up.

-Oh, and in the meantime, you could also start transferring/saving some of your files (Word, etc.) to discs and/or your "pen drive" - this will save a lot of time come Tuesday once your programs are set up on your new Mac.

Well, I started to read the review and gave up because it's so obviously written by someone who is writing as a hobby that it's really not worth fuming about one way or the other. "Doing it for free" does not mean it's a professional doing it free. Actually, why WOULD a professional do it free?
I don't know anything about the site, but if this is being marketed as professional work on any level whatsoever, then the site is worthless. The problem with being a writer is that anyone can type a paragraph on a keyboard or pick up a pen. It seems to be the general consensus that all that's needed to be a writer is the time, the inclination and the venue. If I had a thousand dollars for every time I've heard "If I only had time, I'd write a screenplay/ novel/ short story/book of poems/how-to-book."
Yeah, me too. If I only had time, I'd do some brain surgery and basic plumbing on the side. Not that writing is quite as complex. But really, it does help to know what the hell you're doing.
End of rant.

All right, I shall open the box.  Actually, I got two boxes, one with the Powerbook, and a separate one with Office 2004, a slipcase for the Powerbook and my AppleCare Protection plan.  So, outside of that, I think the only thing that will be in the box is the Powerbook.

That DVD site takes itself very seriously, and if you look at the responses, it's always "Great review, Michael" (or whoever the "reviewer" is) - no, it's not professional, but they're acting as if it were and as if their "reviews" held some kind of merit.  They don't, because it's a bunch of not-very-bright kids doing the "reviewing".  Not only that, but none of them have any kind of background which would give them leave to write a "review".  Many of them profess to have known nothing about film at all until the advent of DVD, and even then, most of them don't watch the classics.  Even the owner of the site has acknowledged that he'd never seen a classic film until DVD came along.  They have one guy who at least knows how to write in English, and who, while young, has a real appreciation for older films.  But, these guys are "reviewing" transfers without having the foggiest idea what the films originally looked like - and they blame transfers for replicating perfectly the look of a film.

BK, as I said a few weeks ago re: Amazon reviews; why would I want to go to a site where any yahoo, yob, or cretin can post and read the illiterate reviews of illiterate amateurs (or wade through the illiterate reviews to get to the handful of folks who actually might know what they're talking about)?  I'm sure there are plenty of sites you can go to get intelligent, professional reviews.  I like the compendium of movie reviews that appear on Rotten Tomatoes...all by professional entities.

I like vanilla ice cream.  I especially like vanilla shakes. I tell a lie.  I love vanilla shakes.  The best to be had may be the ones at the Beachwood Cafe.  A niller shake with a Milton's Deluxe with cheese and a side of fries is right fine lunch.  Earlier this afternoon, The Lovely Wife and I were quite decadent and had Foster Freeze vanilla, chocolate dipped cones.

There's nothing wrong with vanilla ice cream in general. Obviously I approve of it or it wouldn't be the only sweet item I have in my freezer. But what I'm craving is something decadent in the dark chocolate department. And vanilla ice cream, with all its virtues, is still NOT dark chocolate.
As I can't eat what I want, I'm going to bed to dream of chocolate. G'night.

Hmmm...

I just walked into the living room where my roomie and his b/f were watching "Willy Wonka" on cable - gotta love that On Demand service!  Well, they both asleep on the couch.  It's actually sort of cute.  However, right before they started watching the movie, they had some food delivered from a pretty good kabob place nearby - they're always open late.  Well, my roomie ordered some sort of appetizer combo - falafel, hummous, baba-ghanouj, etc.  Well... What's really "cute" about my roomie falling asleep on the couch it that he's fallen asleep with food in hand.  Actually, his hands are IN the food.  Just like Palmolive - he's soaking in it.  At least the hummous and baba-ghanouj have olive oil in them.  I went in and turned off the TV, but I decided to let them keep sleeping.  I also didn't want to risk having hummous and baba-ghanouj flung at me if he happened to wake up startled.  Alas, the smell of garlic is now wafting all through the apartment - including my bedroom - but worse smells could be wafting through the place, so...

Hopefully, when they do wake up, nothing will get spilled, but.... I was planning on cleaning tomorrow anyway, so...

I'm sort of tempted to stay up and wait for them to wake up just to hear the reaction... Who knows, maybe I'll still be up anyway...

Ah, yes! What would have become of "The Six Brides for As Many Brothers"?  "The Six Deadly Sins"? "The Six Voyages of Sinbad"? Seven is definitely the magical number and six is the loneliest number you can ever do...apart from one. It's the Next loneliest since the number two.

Hello Kimlets! Have any of you noticed that Guy Haines has a most magical voice? We (the Brave and Manly Husband) and I were listening to his recent C-D and I started crying like so much fish!  I mean "Evening Star" just breaks my heart. So very clear and pure and (Thank you God) on pitch. I get so wrapped up in voices that are simple and absolutely unadorned, that I had to...Oh, and "What Can You Lose?" and "When You're Alone"!

Suffice it to say, if I ever meet him I will insist upon bearing his children! Or an autograph.

And then I will cook him dinner, as only Euro-Southern cooks can.

Happy New Year, everyone! Happy to be amongst The Chosen.

I'm making a separate CD of the Dutch Sweet Charity from BK's interview.  I had to fade the last chords (the buttons) of some songs because the host (not BK) spoke before they completely went silent.  I hate it when that happens. :-\ Otherwise, the songs sound real good.  Of course, I have no idea who any of the singers are, but at least I have the recording.  It's pretty good.
