Title: BACK TO WORK
Post by: bk on October 29, 2003, 12:26:41 AM
Work, work, work.  I'll need lots and lots of posts to keep me going through the day.

In the meantime, more art - this was used for an Arrow Shirt Ad circa 1920s:

Having a separate thread for DVD posts is probably a good idea, if just to make it easier to find opinions about different DVDs.  I'd suggest having sub-threads, for Comedies, Dramas, Television, stuff like that.  I don't think the usual Hainsie or Kimlet would have trouble figuring out what sub-category is for what film.  Unless they're dealing with the Branaugh Hamlet, which crosses over all borders.  KB is such a card!   ;D

I like everything in one place - but then a separate DVD thread would have everything about DVD's in one place!  I will vote for whatever the majority wants!

I will check on some more art this evening, Mr BK.  But that is a mystery painting for sure.

DR MBarnum if your photos were from Brian's Drive In - that is a Geocities site that doesn't allow a hot link to its photos, you will get a red x or nuttin when you try even if it shows up for you at first.

??? Did you ever click "quick reply" when you meant the other?

My question for ask BK day:  I was watching The Legend of Tom Dooley on the Westerns channel and noticed that Ronald Stein was credited with the music, although there was also a credit for the Kingston Trio  song.  And that is the only music I heard, dropped in throughout the film, as if someone just dropped the needle on different parts of the record.

Did Stein compose anything for that film?

Despite the sometimes "Slog" of going through all the posts, I would prefer the usual "free form" board as I think the site would become too "clinical". What makes the site fun is its unpredictability of direction.

A question for those who know (JACK!). Did the Kingston Trio ever sing"And The Green Grass Grew All Around"? Once again a coincidence. I was asked about it today but only have a "best of" CD of the KT and two "best Of" Lps.

Tom - I don't remember that they did - I just remember that song from The Mickey Mouse Club!  I will check though.

I think I would vote against having a separate area for DVD threads. I like them here as in the past postings have gone in other exciting directions. If one starts with DVD, then people will want one for musicals, television etc.

It is the unpredictabilty of the postings here at HHW that makes postings so much fun!!!

The Legend of T9om Dooley can be found on this CD

They didn't sing "And The Green Grass Grew All Around" , but they sang something similar Where Have All the Flowers Gone?

Tom from Oz

I went through the collector's series of The KIngston Trio (2 albums per CD) and there is nothing there under that name. BUT I also looked at the Capitol  Box set and there is a song called Green Grasses could this be the one you are looking for? It is on the 2nd cd of 4.  Picture below.

and if it is the same song (I went back to look at the collector's series)  then it can be also found here as a bonus track

I hope this helps

LOL MDS - I did the same searches and came up with the same result.  "Green Grasses" is not the song Tom was asking about.  I don't think KT ever recorded it, but they certainly were prolific!

I haven't even begun on The NEW Kingston Trio - maybe they laid down the track!

I'm thinking a separate DVD thread would be good, but I think I will be outvoted judging from the early returns here. Oh, well. I'll hop over to the radio board and mention the Karen Morrow interview that we talked a little about last week (since she doesn't do computers and e-mail).

Question for BK: Did you see the 1971 Los Angeles production of Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with Nancy Walker? I heard she was wonderful. She didn't move to Broadway with the revival, instead choosing to stay in California.

Back later.

And The Green Grass Grew All Around

I did a quick google search and Pete Seeger performs this song on Stories and Songs for Little Children.

Also Tex Ritter sang the song

It seems that is sung by Boy Scouts and the  authors are unknown

but so far nothing with the Kingston Trio.

Off to work. See y'all later

I come into work and what to my wondering eyes should appear (a Night Before Christmas reference) but the Rhino Mame CD. I'm excited, but I'm also afraid, very afraid ;). I will listen to it this morning. I read the booklet (a little thin but not bad). I'm disappointed that there is no extra material. Oh, well.

I agree Ben - not putting extra material on the MAME cd is a disappointment.  I have listened to it once, it sounds okay.  I am glad to have it since my LP is very old.  ;D

Lucy is Lucy - and I love Lucy, so I like MAME to a point.  It is fun.  She is NO Rosalind Russell for sure, but she doesn't hold back and way back when - it was fun to see her on the BIG screen.

I have heard that the Lucy MAME trailer is included on the AUNTIE MAME dvd.  I haven't seen it...is it there?

Good luck on the new job, BK.

Yes - a seperate thread for DVDs would be good and also how about a seperate thread for reality shows for those who are interested.

And speaking of seperate, why not make Ask BK Day and Ask Dear Reader Day two different days?  I miss the method of asking BK questions one day and then reading all the answers the next.

And speaking of Ask BK Day, I have two questions regarding the recording of LUCKY STIFF:

1) Why was this a part Original Cast/part BK Rep Players recording?  Were some OC members not available or was it an artistic choice?

2) Was the orchestration heard on the recording the same one initially used in the show or was it augmented for recording?

Minor Rant - I HATE SHRINK WRAP!!!. Opening a new, shrink wrapped CD becomes a project, trying to find a spot where you can tear the indestructable plastic and then having it come off in pieces. AHHHH.

I feel better now. OK, I Love You, Buh Bye (an Animaniacs reference).

Good morning all.  I'm up early to do the studying I didn't do last night.  I tried,  but I fell asleep with my book across my face and a highlighter still in my hand.
I'm very firmly in the no DVD thread camp.  I agree with Tom, once that starts, others will follow, until we have categories for every type of discussion, and we lose the wonderful flow that our notes have.  Yes it's a pain to slog through, particularly if you're looking for a specifc reply, but we managed on the other format for two years, and I think we can continue to do so.
Off to Starbucks to read and drink coffee in the rain.  Wow, I sound like such a Seattle girl :o

Of course, I'll go with the flow, but my first instinct was NOT to have a separate area for DVDs. All of our discussions are so free flowing, and that's part of the enjoyment of this site.

Pics in Halloween costumes? I thought I picture I had up was frightening enough!

Well, just to make it a horse-race, I'd like a separate DVD thread.  Speaking of threads, my craft-maven wife made her own buttons for a new coat she's sewing last night out of fimo dough.  That way if she's lost in the wilderness, she'll have something to eat.

BTW, I do agree with some of the previous posts that this new format makes it a little harder to slog through all the posts.  I just don't have enough time in the day, so I am sure I am missing much mirth and merriment (and, possibly, legs).
Title: Re:BACK TO WORK

Of course, I am just a guest in this here house, but I personally prefer not to have a separate DVD area.  I agreee with Matt, that the free flowing format is what makes this site so special.  I doubt I would ever go into a DVD-only area, and yet by having the discussions all mixed together, I have discovered certain films that I might never have normally watched, but did so, based entirely on a HHW review.

Oh, no!  Cinemascope yet again.  I thought I'd done everything right.
Sorry.
Here's my question again:
Ask BK:

In terms of quality, is there a difference between places that duplicate CDs?

I think I'm going to run 250, and have a friend in Buffalo who wants to beat the price of any house I find here in Manhattan.

And how important is packaging to the sales prospects?  Do I need a shrink-wrapped jewel case like you find in the store?  Is a paper sleeve too cheap and flimsy?  Would it make a difference to have a graphic printed directly on the CD or could it be a sticker stuck to the CD?
Title: Re:BACK TO WORK
Post by: bk on October 29, 2003, 08:22:24 AM
I'll post more later from work, but I want to say the only thing I find different about slogging through a plethora of posts here rather than the old way, is that one has to go through pages.  Once caught up, however, it's actually easier here, because you can use the "new" button shortcut which takes you directly to the last post you read.

Urinetown has to move. According to the NY Times and Playbill On-Line, the Durst Corporation which owns the Henry Miller Theatre, will be renovating the theatre and surrounding area and Urinetown will have to move by Februrary. They are looking into moving into another theatre, though nothing is open right now. They also mentioned that they might go Off-Broadway but due to union contracts and other issues, that is a long-shot. They don't want to close but it's up in the air right now.

Here is the Playbill link. It's hard to read the Times piece unless you're registered at the Times

In case anyone has missed it, each of us has the ability to entirely delete a post we've created.  Sometimes, when I've CinemaScoped a page, I'll delete the post, re-size the photo and post again.

DVD Section:  Sure, why not.  As long as the reality of having such a section does not preclude our discussing DVDs in the general discussion area.  In other words, as long as it's business as usual and, oh! by the way, we have a place where you can really let loose and talk solely about DVDs, then fine!

If we were to have to cease and desist discussing DVDs or anything else in General Discussion, HHW would die for me.  I like the variety.

What would be discussed if everything got segmented?  You need peope with a wide range of interests, but different.  .

Mr. Lurie:  Sorry you've been bothered by our discussions of reality shows here.  What helps me when I've been bored by something is that I move along knowing that others will do the same when I'm boring them.  No harm, no foul.  It's part of living in this world "together" without insulting one another.

But that's my $.02.  Inflation being what it is.

(P.S. I had a sentence, originally, speculating that a list stripped of variety would result in a lot of verba[l] diarrhea, but decided to modify it.  Thus, JRand53's following post about "verba " [I had a typo] people makes no sense any longer without this explanation.  )

There are two ways to do it.  I will email you the info (if you don't understand it, just email me back).

I have a question.  Now that we are figuring out how to post pictures, we are picture posting trigger happy.  But the problem is that it takes much longer to load the pages here.  Is is possible that we try to control ourselves a bit. I have a question / comment / suggestion.  What would happen, if BK and Mark set up a separate area where we could post all of the pictures that we wanted to post?  If it was separate from the main discussion area, would it still make it slow for people trying to sign on or would it only be slow for those wanting to view the photos?

I would hate to see all of these wonderful photos disappear from this site, especially some of the ones we saw yesterday, but, at the same time I don't want to make it difficult for other members to access the regular chat.

I normally agree that less is better, but there must be a way to compromise?

Greetings all!

Regarding the question of having a separate thread for discussion of DVDs:  My vote is no.  I quite enjoy the meandering stream of consciousness that occurs here on this single thread.  A separate DVD discussion thread, I fear, would dilute a key source of enjoyment of this site.

Regarding the Arrow Shirt advertisement painting:  Very nice, but what is the gentleman doing with his left hand?

My question for Ask BK and Ask Dear Readers today:  Is there some non-musical property--be it from the stage, film or books--that you would like to see made into a musical?  Feel free to suggest what creative team (or individual composer/lyricist/book writer) would be best suited, in your opinion, to create the new musical.

Der Brucer's picture is changing.  This is all very surreal! Quick thoughts on last nights "Seussical" experience.  It's the brand new non-equity tour that just began about 3 weeks ago.  Besides the tempo's being WAY too slow, the show was sung well.   Blocking and stuff needs to be tightened still, but the sets were very minimal which worked really well. The lighting was very interesting, mostly a lot of projections and veri-lights that were really cool.  Another positive thing is that they used the original Broadway costumes, which were cool. My only complaint is that this (and other non-equity tours) are holding up the rights for community theatre or schools  to do exciting new shows like "Seussical".  Catch it if it comes to your town, and say hi to Horton the Elephant, he's a pal of mine from early community theatre endeavors.  Oh, and there was no playbill... too bad, so sad.  :(

Don't fear - I'm not creating new sections here for no reason.  I just decided to hear your thoughts.  I would never sacrifice the flow of the posts, which is why I was so adamant about the design of the board - I hate those sites that use boards like this where there a hundreds of topics - not for me.  So, for now, I'm getting the impression to not have a separate DVD section.

I promised some comments about my concert last night at the new Walt Disney Concert Hall.  The concert itself was quite enjoyable.  It was Murray Perahia leading the Academy of Saint Martin in the Fields in some chestnuts by Bach, Mozart and Beethoven.  The playing was precise, and the accoustics clear and warm.

As for the hall, what struck me most was the beauty of the auditorium.  I really like the exterior of the building, with its curves of stainless steel, but now that I've seen it, I like the interior even more.  The auditorium is almost entirely of honey-toned wood.  The room's shape, particularly the curved walls and "billowing" ceiling, creates a sense that one is in an enormous sailing ship.  The audience surrounds the orchestra, and there is a great sense of intimacy between listeners and players.   Last night I was in the balcony, which is about as far from the stage as one can get, and I was quite satisfied with the sight lines from my seat.  Tomorrow night I sit in the Terrace, which is the middle section.  (This is where I will be seated for all the concerts in my subscription.)  Later on in the season, I hope to have the opportunity to purchase individual tickets for the orchestra section and what they call the "View" section, which is behind the orchestra, facing the conductor.

A stunning spray of organ pipes (they've been likened to a mega-size order of French fries) provide a visual centerpiece in the hall.  (The organ is still being tuned and will not be making its debut until next year.  It takes that long to tune an organ, I have learned.)  The seats are quite comfortable and covered in a highly colorful contemporary floral pattern fabric.

Daytime tours of the hall begin November 1.  If you are visiting L.A., I highly recommend you check out this new landmark.

Der Brucer's picture is changing.  This is all very surreal!

I presume you mean the picture of Grand Canyon Caverns. That is an animated .gif file (similar to the ones that make the smiles jump and dance, or BK's yo-yo go up and down). I didn't do any thing trickey, just copied the link from their web site.

I do like seeing the occasional picture.  But you have no idea how long it is taking to load.  I love the idea of having a separate place to post pictures. I don't think that would affect loading time, would it? What a great idea!

I didn't want to get rid of posting pictures, because I know how much some people enjoy it. It's just frustrating for those of us with slower modems.

Thank you, Dear der Brucer, for all your help.
Now, if only I had some understanding of the process that led to the non-cinemascope picture..

Step 1. I loaded your file into Microsoft Picture! Express (a small but functional photo editor that often comes bundled for free with scanners, cameras, and the like.

Step 2. I simply cut out the portion of the picture I wanted and saved it to a new .jpg file.

Step 3. I uploaded the .jpg into my HHW album in PictureTrail.com (a subsciber photo-hosting service designed primarily for EBay users - if you log onto the site, they give you a 90 day free trial and later you can get a full subscription for about $20 (I think) a year. PictureTrail then creates a URL for the photo which I can cut and paste into the img][/img phrase created when you click on the insert image icon.

One nice thing about PictureTrail is that they let you create gobs of folders and store a gazillion pictures. You can store one for a friend and provide them with a linkable URL without giving them access to the rest of your stuff. Should I delete your picture, or drop my Picture Trail subscription, the link would no longer work. (However, once the pic is in a message, anyone can right-click it and save the file to their own computer.)

Would you like to set the above to Music ? -

"The Right-Click URL Tango"

or maybe a "Pix Post" number ala the Time Warp.

I really don't think THE WOMEN has been musicalized yet. THE OPPOSITE SEX certainly has music in it, but all the songs are performance pieces, not developed from character motivation. I agree that it would seem to be MADE for musicalization, must more so than something like THE SKIN OF OUR TEETH, which Kander and Ebb have done.

I do like seeing the occasional picture.  But you have no idea how long it is taking to load. ... It's just frustrating for those of us with slower modems.

I don't think it's a modem problem. I use an old fashioned 26K dial-up modem on my relatively slow Pentium II and the pages load and scroll as fast as one could wish. The major slow-down on internet picture downloading is computer RAM size. An older 64KRAM machine is dog-slow, whereas my modest 128KRAM works just fine. Creating multiple messages for more than one picture is a chimera - the computer still has to down-load all the pictures on the page whether or not they are in one message. There can be a problem, however, when folks attach a large picture file (a file designed to print a pretty picture is much larger than one designed for posting or Email. Most camera software allows you to save your pix in Email sizes. The pictures of BK's book signing were 300-500 KBytes out of the camera, but were only 25KByte .jpgs when I posted them.

Confused enough?

big surprise: I would actually vote "no" to a seperate dvd area!  (as much as I love dvds and movies, I like the informal potpourri of voices and topics here at HHW2).  I like that there is a TOD, which gets turned inside out and upside down before coming back to the topic at hand.

I would second (or third) the motion for a seperate Photo Section, though.  (I'm on dsl, so the upload time isn't a question for me). I think that we should look out for those with lower broadbands, and if we have a picture to post, we can tell all the dear readers where to go to see the picture; that way the interested parties will see the post and the picture, should they choose to.

I'm certainly glad that there are other dear readers who appreciated the pictures of Angel, Spike and Wesley. . . :)

MAYBE, we could have a "picture day" TOD,  say one of the slower days at HHW, where we could share pictures, and keep the picture posting to a minimum on the other days.  Just a thought.

I know that Jay's question was in regards to non-musical works that would be turned into musicals.  So, in that vein (and it is not polite to scoff) I have been working for years on a musical version of Edna Ferber's Giant.  Now, I said, don't scoff!  In my musical version, Jett Rink (the James Dean character) is the central focus of the show (he is the Giant, not just Texas).  Unfortunately, I am not much of a songwriter.  Maybe Noel needs a new challenge?

One movie that is already a musical, but one that I would love to see brought to the stage, is The Court Jester.

My office computer is finally up and running, although it is so slow that they have to come in and clean the hard drive off tonight.  Even so, the "load" time, even with images, isn't any slower than at home - I don't think the dial-up modem is the problem - I think it's what someone said earlier, the computer's ram or whatever the hell you  call it.  Maybe we'll do a photo section at some point, but I do enjoy seeing them here, too.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Good afternoon![/move]

Ahhh...I just got out of Western Civ, where I took a very long and exhausting exam.  I think I did okay on it, but I think I may have gotten a B....I hate the format of the teacher's exams.  Not one multiple choice question!  It's all long essay questions.  I loathe, detest and despise essay questions.  I mean one or two is okay, but a whole exam? Blech.

I agree with those who are not in favor of a separate DVD section.  I mean, I don't even know how much my vote would count because I only own a total of 15 DVDs and don't discuss them much, but I really do like the free-for-all form that we have now.

TCB--thank you for the lovely compliment from yesterday!  So the goth pic stays!  (I've been having way too much trouble trying to get my other pic to look clear).

Jay--I agree that The Women is a show that cries out for musicalization.  I haven't seen the Opposite Sex, so I don't know how it was handled, but I would love for The Women: The Musical to have a Jerry Herman score and I would love to see Donna Murphy as Mary Haines, Rachel York as Crystal Allen, Carolee Carmello maybe as Sylvia Fowler and someone like Nanette Fabray as the Countess de Lave.

And regarding the "reality show" discussions (Trading Spaces, Big Brother, Survivor, Queer Eye, etc), I rather enjoy participating in those...of course that is because I watch some of those shows.  But even when the topics here on HHW turn to something that I have little or no interest in I still enjoy hearing what others have to say about said topic. And, as our esteemed, diverse, and open minded BK is once again working on a reality television program I am thinking we might be having more "reality show" discussions in the very near future!!

Oddly enough, I don't think we ever did find out the title of the previous show BK was working. So I do believe that will be my BK question for the day...what was the title of the other reality show you were working on this summer? And when does/did it air?

Personally, I probably wouldn't be interested in a separate thread on DVDs.  I, too, like the free-form stream-of-consciousness that is the foundation of HainesHisWay.  Just my opinion.

About pictures, what if people loaded pictures into a test post on the tech list or a separate picture list (on HHW) and just copied the link to that picture (without using the "img" in brackets fuction), like I did:

http://www.haineshisway.com/community/attachments/Kate_as_Katherine.jpg

That way people could click on the link if they wanted to see the picture and the discussion page wouldn't have to load every posted picture every time someone just wanted to read the posts.  ;D  How do you all think that that would work??

Hello, fellow dear readers! I have just returned from a long and laborious day at school. I did all of the following today: Biology review, Biology test, All-District Chorus Review, Algebra quiz, Show Choir-learned a new dance, write rest of History paper, had an hour and a half of History notes on the Ottoman Turks (blech), more Algebra review, voice lesson, home.

Whew! I'm wiped, and I still have 3 Algebra worksheets, a French letter to write, and Sir Gawain to read. Sounds like fun, huh?

My voice is officially back, although my singing voice is iffy. I have an audition for All-District Chorus next week, and I'm REALLY nervous. Laryngitis has stripped me of my clear high notes, so I have 6 days to get them back and running.

I don't like the idea of a DVD section, because I like the random-topic feel of this board (It's like we all have ADHD! :)) And RE: The Reality Show Board: Whenever there's a post about reality shows, I just skip over it. It doesn't hurt anyone, and it means I get to spend less time reviewing EVERY post there is. Not difficult, not strenuous, etc. We'll all be one HAPPY family!

BK: I know you don't watch TV that much, but do you like the idea of reality shows? It sometimes feels like they're "taking over" TV, if that makes sense. And also, are you a fan of country music? Because if you aren't that show will kill you, and we don't want that!

I don't know about anyone else, but I love this:  :o

Is that too high?  Would it kill me if it fell on my head?

Every location has it's plusses and minuses. I've lived in California for 24 years and am doing just fine. I've lived through major earthquakes, fires, droughts, etc. and wouldn't trade it for pretty much anywhere else.

The ground didn't crumble beneath any feet. It shook. Once.  For about a second and a half. I'll take that and some falling ash over the extreme seasonal weather/temps, tornadoes and hurricanes anyday. :)

Well I know how it got started.  It's because a bunch of people have been posting many pictures, and it's taking some of us a very long time to load those pages.

I like seeing some pictures too.  Although I think the idea of saying what the pic is and linking to it is also an idea.

I think those who suggested not posting pics here (don't remember who said it, sorry) were just trying to come up with a solution, so people don't suffer.  And being one of the sufferers, I do really appreciate people being considerate like that.

I'm back from a very long day that would not end.  School and Work then Dinner at my sister's house.  Looooooooooonnnnnnnnggggg day! :(

I want to try out this picture idea... lemme give poutine a try....

(I did a goodle image search and found more than 10 pages of pictures of poutine in various arrangements... God bless the internet!)

Poutine!!!  So far, I've eaten a chicken salad sandwich on rye bread, and some cole slaw.  Pretty good, and not too fattening.  I'm actually leaving work a bit early so they can work on my computer now.  So, let's get some postin' goin' on and I'll join in the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs when I get home.

I strongly join with those against a seperate DVD thread on this here board.  The segmentation of topics and such was the one fear I had when we had "the big changeover," and I was oh-so-unspeakably pleased that there was no such thing going on here.  The great mish-mash of topics here, on or off topic, interesting to all or few, whatever... all part of the HHW charm, I feel.

As for pictures, I think they will continue to be used, but in lesser numbers, as the novelty of this new ability wears off.  Yes, heavily picture-laden pages take quite some time to load on my computer, but I'm confident that soon the onslaught will lessen and we'll just have occasional pics that add a nice perk to the discussions.

Maya - If you don't like essay questions, just be glad you've never taken a class from DR Ann's mother.  She is the queen of essay questions.  That said, she is absolutely the finest teacher I've ever had, and I was very fortunate to have taken music history from her.
Classes from her father (I had him for Counterpoint) are an entirely different matter... the man is incredibly brilliant, but completely off his rocker!  ;D

One (poetry book) title to keep in mind while working on Green Finch and Linnet Bird is "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."  It's a tricky song, but if you bring out the longing-to-be-free YOU feel, in every line, it can be quite effective.  Betsy Joslyn's rendition is one to avoid, though; too off the pitch.

Used to be, TV networks tried to entertain viewers by getting the best people they could to create fictional programming.  (Many of those dearest to me did just that.)  You'd find fine writing, and fine acting on the little box.  In the past few years, the networks have, largely, abandoned their original mandate and divert the public by showing so-called "real" people (who aren't paid nearly as much as actors) in "reality" situations.  The "reality" is every bit as fictional as "scripted" television, but now the "scripters" aren't paid nearly as much as writers.

Reality television, which is anything but real, upsets me on some deep level for these reasons.  Maybe it's fun to watch for some, but it just turns my stomach, thinking of all the truly talented people who can't find work in television any more.   :P

I agree with the posters who want to have DVD reviews on the regular site. I don't want to see fragmentation on this site.

Arnold: It looks like a lot of fun...haven't started on it yet, but it's right in my range, so I should have fun with it! And just where is your son? I'm sure Maya and Emily are just devastated with his Errant and Truantness!

Noel: Thanks for the advice!

Just started Donald's radio show. The first song is great! Oooh, new voice. Must listen. Be back later.

I think those who suggested not posting pics here (don't remember who said it, sorry) were just trying to come up with a solution, so people don't suffer.  And being one of the sufferers, I do really appreciate people being considerate like that.
Are you saying, then, that you'd rather der Brucer and I not post pics of our trip eastward?

No pictures of what we're seeing?  No pictures of what we're doing?  No pictures of the dogs seeing and doing them with us?  No pictures at all?

I mean, I'd really feel bad if everyone else could have enjoyed them but didn't get to see them at all, because you would have had to suffer because of your own slow computer...

NOT!!!

Personally, having a separate thread to store DVD reviews, which could be dupilcates of what has been written here in the main thread (managed with a simple cut and paste), makes sense.  That way, anyone who wanted to look up past reviews could do so quite easily.  That's similar to the requests I've received for a place where my stories could be gathered (which I'd rather gather at a site of my own, with links here to HHW).  But to force anyone who wants to see pictures to leave the main thread simply because some computers are slower than others seems disruptive to the daily thread's flow, and contradicts the general concensus I've been reading here today.

(And with this, I believe I've hit 25 posts!)

Holy cow!  By George, I think I finely figured out how to post a picture!  I'm slow but I have to think these things out. I knew it had something to do with reducing the size but couldn't figure out exactly how to do that.  I've got it now.   Next project, how to do one of those dancing smiley face things.

Hello all!   Hope you had a good day.  I got the flu shot at work today.  Maybe that's what gave my brain the boost to finely crack the picture problem.  LOL!  All I can say is that my arm sure is sore.

This is an old photo of me but I hope to have a brand new one for you on Friday.  Not to brag but I (and everyone in my department) will be sporting a  T-shirt with a design that I submitted (and won) for the American Heart Walk.    A  true limited edition Danise original.

Some day I may be able to show you a book cover that I did for a guy I know who writes poetry.  It's in the works but he's not quite finished with the book or some such.  I did my part.   I don't know how long it will take for him to do his.   It's already been almost a year.

One thing I have to say about living where there are hurricanes--at least (for the most part) we have plenty of warning that they are coming and how bad they are going to be.  I can pack Mom and the dogs up and head for hills before it hits.

You have no clue that an earthquake is going to  hit or how bad.   Thank you, but no thank you.  I'm not that deep into impromptu  rock and roll!  :)

IMHO I like talking about DVD's without a special section.  If there's one for DVD's then you'll need one for music, then theater, then food, then....  I think you get my point.   I  like the free flow of the board here.  I hated always fighting over " But That's Off topic".

A good conversation may grow away from the original subject matter but isn't that what MAKES a good conversation?

Have a good evening all.

D

I'm happy to have photos posted here, within the notes.  So it is written, so it shall be done.  I like it, they're fun and if it's slow for some folks hopefully the fun will outweigh the slowness.  Right now, I outweigh the slowness, hence I am on a diet.   Now, how many of you remember when the singing bird was singing all the livelong night and keeping me from sleeping?  Well, I got up one evening when it was happening and I snapped a pic of the singing bird at 1:00 in the morning.  Look carefully on the top of the garage wall and you'll see it.

Michael, I couldn't find any references either. I found citations that mentioned both the song and the Kingston Trio but none that mentioned that they sang the song. As you said, I found references to Pete Seeger singing it, but otherwise, as relates to Kingston Trio, it's a bust.

NOT!!!

Okay let me just start by saying you completely misrepresented what I said.  I never said that I didn't want pictures posted here. What I said was that I really appreciated those people who were trying to find a way to accommodate everybody.  I thought that was very thoughtful of them.

I'm not sure if I should write this or not. But I found your post very condescending.  I really appreciate all the help Der Brucer gave me (and others) yesterday (re: posting pictures).  And sure I would like to see some pictures of your trip.  But your post made it sound like you have a complete disregard for everyone here with a slower computer.

My original suggestion re: pictures was just to try to limit them a bit.  Because some pages had so many pictures, and it took VERY long to load.

I do agree with  DR Jed.  I think that probably once the novelty wears off, there will be less pictures posted here.

I hope this doesn't come across as confrontational.  But your post really upset me.

I am already "viewed" out.  I took Kritzer Time over to Kinko's so I could give my final editor the latest version - I have never taken anything there and left it overnight where it hasn't been ready by eight the next morning.  The very uncooperative man told me that the earliest he could have it was by noon.  I told him that wasn't acceptable.  I finally got him down to ten-thirty, but that doesn't work either.  I'm going to call a supervisor shortly, because if I can't get it in the morning, that means I have to go back there before lunch and that is a big pain in the butt cheeks.  I really abhor Kinko's and would not go there but for the fact that they are the only place near me that can velobind something with this many pages.  Merde, do you hear me?

Thanks MDS. "And The Green Grass.... " may well have been remembered incorrectly by my "customer". All I had was "Greenback Dollar". The song requested may indeed have been "Green Grasses" which Jack located on a Trio Box Set. The help by friends at HHW is amazing and truly appreciated. Better than "google" IMHO. I was able to help the "customer" with the Sonny Curtis theme from the "Mary Tyler Moore" show and 16 other "hard to find on CD" songs.

SWW -

I think Jennifer is trying to make the suggestion that we leave pictures out of the main thread of conversation.  There could be a separate thread where we can all add pictures and the commentary that goes with them.

You, and other picture posters, could make a text only post in the main thread notifying all DRs that you have posted pictures in the picture thread.

I myself would love to be able to see pictures of the dogs and your trip (across the continent... wow btw!) but I think it would lessen my enjoyment of them if I knew other DRs were being severely inconvenienced, if not even forced to view the community page as often as they would like, simply for not having as fast an internet connection as everyone else.

:)

Alright... here I go on my first major post (actually my first of many major posts as I try to up post numbers... ) so be warned.. you will see lots of different posts.

First of all: No seperate threads for dvds-- If you don't like it, skim  ;)

Pictures: I agree with jennifer: while the pictures everyone posts are beautiful, there are a lot of them. If we could have a seperate place for the artsy album covers and bk's stuff (which are to die for!) (not right now, maybe in the near future) and maybe only post those lovely personal photos, I think it would be a nice
compromise.

One exception: TD can post whomever he wants as long as they are good looking.

I cannot express how thrilled I have been with the Sherlock Holmes Collection DVD box set. The movies have been beautifully remastered from what appears to be very old, worn, and ill-cared for materials.

I taped most of the films off local television about 20 years ago, so suffice to say the quality has always been shoddy. These films restore beautiful deep blacks, whites and grays to wonderful effect. Now, I can't wait for the next box which comes out the week after Thanksgiving. I know ONE thing I'll be thankful for this year!  :D

Title: Re:BACK TO WORK
Post by: Ron Pulliam on October 29, 2003, 09:13:21 PM
I certainly don't want anyone's feelings hurt on this issue, but I have to say what I feel.

There have been plenty of times in the past when I wanted to enjoy sites that downloaded very slowly for me.

I overcame that, somewhat, by upgrading to a PC with increased memory.  A big step was switching from dial-up to DSL.

There are still things I cannot do, sites I cannot fully appreciate.  And I realize that major PC improvements may not be practical or practicable for everyone.

I do experience a slight delay from time to time, not just here, but everywhere I go...especially eBay.

After being on AOL dial-up for more than two years, I have to tell you every delay is slight by comparison.

That said, we are on a site that has been upgraded.  I recommend holding off suggesting a restriction of its capabilities until the "novelty" has lessened.

The Leonardo essay turned into a Martin Luther essay at the last minute. The ice cube melted and the cat is bored. But here's a picture of him having a fierce battle with a roll of paper towels.

watched an interesting movie on dvd:
Which combines the sensibilities of TRAINSPOTTING and NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD with some mixed results.  There are a few genuine scares and zombies who move quicker than a chipmunk being chased by my dog.  It's a movie I'll watch again, when I feel the need fora 21st Century take on zombies.
