Sorry the notes went up a bit late - I was involved in a pissing contest with what I believe were two teenagers (I know, I know, I should learn) on another board (the Phantom grosses I was mentioning).  I was merely pointing out that you can't trust places like the imdb and box office mojo - they're just reporting optimistic estimates from studios who frequently lie anyway (they've been caught with their pants down on hundreds even thousands of occasions, and every time they are it's gleefully reported in Variety).  Well, you can't point out anything to these kids because they know it ALL.  They're children of the INTERNET, after all, they visit websites and watch ACCESS HOLLYWOOD.  First of all, for them to even be concerned about box-office is inanity itself.  Until the eighties only a handful of movie fans ever followed box-office - now it's all that's important, which is why every news show reports it.  I mean, who CARES?  But, there these kids are, talking as if they are experts on box-office - I merely pointed out that I've been in the movie business much longer than they've been alive and I know just a little bit about this stuff.  Not a lot, but what little I know is based on reality, not the Internet.  I do not like armchair experts, and that's what these kids are - about everything.  They know it all, and no one can say differently, especially if they're - wait for it - OLDER.

Jose, I don't believe any cookies or biscottis have shown up here in LA in the mail environment.

What was the name I used to call you during rehearsals - I suddenly can't remember it.

"Good things come to those who wait."

;)

Even those who call their Musical Director:

"Saracen Dog!"
*which movie was that from again?

...which somehow morphed into:

"Haitian Dog!"
*I think, unfortunately, "Haitian" was Ryan's idea.

...which then just got shortened to:

"HAITIAN!!"

...but it was usually:

"You HAITIAN!!"

-Did that refresh your memory? ;)

Now, of course, there were certain nicknames I had for you, but I don't think I ever used them in rehearsal.

 :o

LOL!!!

*I just got back from the kitchen.  Everything is wrapped up nice and neat, and they should be on their merry way tomorrow morning... well, later this morning.  They'd be perfect with some milk and/or hot chocolate - so be prepared.  -Now, the biscotti would also go wonderfully with some vin santo, or even a beaumes de venise, but I don't believe you partake of such libations.

Haitian dog!  That was it!  And it was hardly Ryan's, it was all mine.  Saracen dog is from What's Up, Tiger Lily.

I think this transfer is a step up from what they've been showing in the past - any TIVO experts out there - I started recording just after the credits, but I remember something about the fact that it automatically backs up and records from the beginning if you start in the first five or ten minutes.  Is that true?

...Just as long as you started watching it from the beginning... And as long as you set your "buffer" to more than five minutes on your TiVo unit.  However, and I'm not sure how you do it, you have to reset the "start recording" point.

...And the transfer does look very nice!

Actually, I've been thinking...  I think the last time I've seen this movie was when I was in high school, 15 or 16 years old.  Basically, half-a-life ago for me at this point.

WOW!

As for my audition story...

My freshman year in high school, they were doing Brigadoon for the spring musical.  As usual, they wanted an uptempo and a ballad for the audition.  I had a copy of a Rodgers & Hammerstein songbook, and I had just watched - and loved - Flower Drum Song on TV - Channel 20, WDCA out of Washington, DC.  -They would run these "musical festivals" every now and then - three or four movie musicals in a row for about two or three days in a row.  Sometimes even with commentary - I seem to remember watching The King & I with a special interview with Rita Moreno.  But I digress... Hmm... that seems to be going around.

Well, I had picked "Younger Than Springtime" for my ballad.  And for my up-tempo I picked "I Enjoy Being A Girl".  I just really loved the song - and the movie sequence got me hooked.  All those different outfits being shown in all those mirrors!  It got a few giggles, but I did end up being cast in Brigadoon.  "Ale for sale or barter there, At the fair, Laddie!" was my line during the Opening Vendor Calls.  -And I was terrified - I had to start on a high-G!

My fathers says...

A Hundred Million Miracles
Are happening ev'ry day!

I don't think I can make it through the whole movie - I already have that "I need some sleep" headache... But I'll at least stay with it through "I Enjoy Being A Girl".

-Although, my system seems to be perking up now... And, actually, it's been a while since I've done an all-nighter, so...

Hmmm...

Post by: Ann on January 04, 2005, 01:33:43 AM
Well, I just made one of those grown-up smart decisions that your parents are always telling you to make...

A dear friend of mine called me earlier this evening and said he would be making a 5 hour layover stop at SeaTac airport on his way from Missouri to Portland...his plane was due to arrive at SeaTac at 1:30 am.  I haven't been able to see this dear friend of mine in many months, so I wanted to go up and spend a bit of time with him...perhaps grab a late bite at Denny's.  So about 20 minutes ago I started out...driving down the hill towards I-5.  To get to I-5, I have to get on a little highway first...and I got totally disoriented and almost drove onto this little highway going the wrong direction.

This trip, I realized, was not going to work.

Since last Wendesday, between the work commute, trips up to Seattle for Symphony gigs, and trips across the mountains, I've logged in just shy of 800 miles of driving.  Due to either parties or a recent bout of bad sleeping I've averaged about 4 hours of sleep a night in the past 5 nights.  My body has had enough.  Even being 23 and fairly high stamina...it's just too much.  I simply could not manage even this little 30 mile each way trip.  So I called my friend and left a message on his cell phone telling him not to expect me.  It saddens me, but I think it's for the best.  My mother would be proud.

"Love Look Away"... This sequence just seemed too-too even back then... "then" being when I was 14 years old.  But when you want to "expand" a number, might as well go whole hog!  Or would that be Whole Boar in the case of "Flower Drum Song"?  ;)

Good to hear you're feeling better, DR Michael Shayne!

When I walked into our office this morning, I spotted the remnants of a gift basket in our kitchen area that someone sent to our department yesterday.  I just managed to score a biscotti that is dipped in Godiva chocolate.  This will go perfectly with my cup of hazelnut coffee.

110 in the Shade is also on my list of never tired CD. Simple Little Things - ahh, heaven.

Manhattan Transfer's Mecca for Moderns is on the list.

Sweeney Todd
Music Man
Most Happy Fella
Falsettoland
Fiddler on the Roof
City of Angels

I will stop there as I must get back to work. The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation is calling my name. They should give me a grant for all I do for them, then I could spend my days posting here and traveling around the country and the world meeting all my friends out there in the dark.

Good morning, all!  Finding myself on page 2 first thing in the morning amazes me!  Firsy of all, I have to congratulate DRJoey for the fantastic photo last night.  That certainly woke me up this morning, and I loved DRJose's audition story.
DRPanni, what does a wooden chicken say?  Does it sound like a wood block?

10 CDs:
HAINES HIS WAY
BROADWAY BOUND
CINDERELLA (Julie Andrews)
DARLING OF THE DAY
OUT OF THIS WORLD
BOYS FROM SYRACUSE
CANDIDE (OBC)
TOSCA (Maria Callas)
SEA PICTURES (Janet Baker)
SONGS OF THE AUVERGNE (Ta Kanawa)

These days, because of the recording project, I mainly listen to a lot of unreleased CDs.

Today, I plan to listen to JEEPERS CREEPERS.

Great Christmas Tree photo yesterday DRBEN!

Hmmmmmm.....I love that story DRJOSE.  I am trying to imagine what your teachers wrote on your audition sheet!  Yes, the FLOWER DRUM SONG looked great - but it wasn't in STEREO!  At least it wasn't on my system.  My p/s VHS is in stereo, so I am not sure what was going on.  And of course some of the sets were re-used by producer Ross Hunter in BACK STREET!  I liked the "Love Look Away" number - although like ALL of Hermes Pan's numbers in the movie - it went nowhere!

PETER PAUL and MARY
STATE FAIR - soundtrack compilaton
JEEPERS CREEPERS
COMPANY - ORIGINAL Broadway Cast CD
THE SHERMAN BROTHERS
ANNETTE - the Ultimate Collection
BOBBY DARIN - Greatest Hits
GYPSY - original soundtrack

These are the ones that I play a LOT!!!

I'm prone to compulsive behavior, so I most often listen to my cd's in alphabetical order, at least once a year to make sure I listen to all of them because for some reason I have to justify owning the cd.  So even though there are some that I struggle to get through again and again, I still do it.  Or sometimes when a cd rolls around I don't enjoy, I make sure to play it when I'm in the shower so I don't have to listen to it.  I know, it kind of defeats the purpose of why I listen to them, but it justifies it in my head.  Sometimes for me, it is best not to question.

Anyway, there are many occassions when I pull out some favorites and they would include:

No, No, Nanette (this show this always makes me happy) (I love the 20's)
Jason Graae - Never Fully Dressed w/o a Smile (though lately it's been skipping :( )
A Man of No Importance
A New Brain
Good News (again with the 20's)
Merrily We Roll Along
3hree
Steel Pier
On A Clear Day You Can See Forever
Barbara Cook's Mostly Sondheim

I'm off - enjoy your day everyone!

Good morning. I had a very restless night, DRs, and may sneak back to bed for 15 minutes. But I did have a terribly interesting and VERY sexy dream about little old me and - wait for it - Mr. Gregory Peck. Why Mr. Gregory Peck, I don't know. I haven't watched any of his movies recently, haven't thought about him recently... But there you go - the mind is a mysterious thing. You'd think I would have been dreaming of wooden chickens.
Okay, 15 more minutes of sack time and the day begins.

If I were Lord Lloyd Webber and Warner Bros. I'd be sweating those grosses. Though the studio is saying that the movie is in limited release, it's not so limited. Charlotte is always one of the last big cities to get true limited release movies. It was January before CHICAGO arrived here. But PHANTOM opened at several theaters here in town the same time it rolled out in other cities across the country. A $4.1 million gross the first weekend did not look that good to me, and last week, with the holidays and other movies doing BIG business, PHANTOM counted $4.8 million, not a big upswing for a musical that would seem made for viewers seeking a lush movie experience during the holidays.

When the movie spreads out to other territories, it's going to to be in smaller cities and towns that I don't think are going to be all that welcoming to a pop opera.

Just my opinion, of course, but I see EVITA-level grosses for this movie ($60-70 million) rather than the $170 million that CHICAGO grossed domestically.

My ten most listened to CDs:

1. UNSUNG SONDHEIM (by far the #1 on my playlist, and I don't say that because BK produced it and DR elmore did the orchestrations. It truly is my favorite CD.)

2. FOLLIES (OBC)

3. GYPSY (film soundtrack)

4. CAMELOT (OBC)

5. MAME (OBC)

6. SONDHEIM AT THE MOVIES

7. MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (OBC)

8. BYE BYE BIRDIE (OBC)

9. THE NOEL COWARD ALBUM

10. DORIS DAY: A DAY AT THE MOVIES

Sad to say, but I've read nothing about any release plans for FLOWER DRUM SONG. I recorded it off AMC years ago on tape (widescreen edition that came on at 2 a.m.), and have been toying with the idea of transferring that over to a DVD.

I'd really love to have a pristine DVD commercial issue of the film.

Not sure what the hold up on FLOWER DRUM SONG is, DVD wise - but at least we did get the soundtrack on CD so that is a start.

I was surprised the TCM showing wasn't in STEREO - or did anyone else get a STEREO broadcast?  I remember it wasn't last time either, so I didn't bother to tape even though it IS so much better in letterbox!

Yes, I thought Marilyn did a terrific job - and B.J.'s correct L's and R's didn't always match Nancy Kwan's mouth - but she sounded great.

However, I for one, would love to hear the Saracen Dog doing "I Enjoy Being a Girl"

5. MAME (OBC)

How could I forget.  Yes, add MAME to my list.  And FUNNY GIRL (though it's a toss up between the OBC and the ST)

Just one to go......

DR DanTheMan- thanks for suggestions re: telnet.  The computer does have hyperTerminal. And I think it might potentially be what I need.  But I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use it. :(

Btw, re: Phantom and limited release

I don't think it's an extremely limited release (those usually play at only one theatre here).  It's playing at a bunch, but far less than most movies.  I wonder if it's only in the big cities right now.

They showed a GREAT preview the other night.  Can't wait to see tonight's show.

Btw, did anyone see the Dynasty show the other night?  I started watching and thought it was hilarious.

Btw2, any opinions on last night's new shows: MEDIUM or WHO'S MY DADDY?  And will anyone be watching the new NBC sitcom COMMITTED?  It stars Montrealer Jennifer Finnagan (sp?).  So i'll probably watch it at least once.

It appears you created the text in a Word Processor that converted regular quotes to "curley" quotes which the web site can not handle - plus it is having difficulty converting other style features like italics.

Also "guaranteeís" would not have any punctuation mark before the final "s".

I presume the symbol after "Vocal Coaching" is intended to be an exclamation mark.

DR Matthew, looks good but there are a few strange characters here and there (and I'm not talking about any DRs here.)  It looks like it occurs where ever you use a single quote or a hyphen.  You probably need to use some kind of html escape character to represent them in the code.

And I agree with DR JRand--get a pic of your smiling face up there!

btw2, any opinions on last night's new shows: MEDIUM or WHO'S MY DADDY?

I enjoyed MEDIUM and intend to watch it some more. Often shows of this type, with many "flashbacks" and "visions" have disconcerting jerky editing - this was not the case with MEDIUM.

I think the entire concept of WHO's MY DADDY is obnoxious; it exploits human emotion in a particularly manipulative and vicious fashion.  Jerry Springer had more class! What's next - jars of fetuses called "WHO'S MY BABY?"

Perhaps my judgement is colored because I am an adoptee and find the thought of someone toying with the possibility of meeting a biological parent for the amusement of an audience reprehensible!

der Brucer - who also feels show's of this sort will put more pressure on the system to "open" closed adoption records, which is a movement in itself that will encourage more abortions!

Good point on the Hyphen - I guessed exclamation point, but considering that Word does a dash/hyphen substitution (together with ordinal nad fraction conversion, and plays with bold and italic formatting) your hyphen guess is better.

Word does have user controllable menu to stop it from being so damn "helpful"!

Re:  website characters.  If, like me, you did your webpages in Word and saved them with the "Save as a webpage" feature, you are now realizing Word is a little peculiar in that regard (well, actually, in several regards).  I had to completely retype my somewhat verbose Farmer essay and HTML code it myself to get it to work properly.  Ugh.

Re:  10 favorite CDs.  I don't think I could choose individual CDs, but I do have favorite genres:  Brasilian music, Celtic music, even Brasilian-Celtic music (there is such a thing, ask DR MBarnum!), of course OCRs and soundtracks, early music (I especially love Hildegard von Bingen, or Hildegard von Bingy Wingy as we fondly refer to her in the home environment), and your usual assortment of classical-type shtuff.

Re:  Medium & Who's Your Daddy.
Well, I must confess, Betsy and I watched parts of WYD, decried its blatant manipulations and premise, and then of course teared up at the denoument (we're suckers, I admit it), and then switched to Medium, which Betsy liked more than I did.  I think it's interesting that Patricia Arquette ("How many Arquettes are there?" Betsy asked in disbelief last night) played a ghost in Holes (and one who left clues, at that) and now she's on the other side of the rainbow, so to speak.

DRJennifer, I enjoyed MEDIUM; I thought it was just creepy enough, and I like the cast.  I'll be curious to see if it stays consistent; the critics did not, in the New York rags, think it was too good.  Linda Stasi (I think) gave it one star, but since she also gave one star to DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES I figured MEDIUM had to be at least interesting.

Has a lovely luncheon with WFO Sunday, he and his Joe came with armloads of gifts including, (and played several times since then) a Compilation Album put out by Borderes and produced by our own BK, including  "Everyone Wants to Be Sondheim" sung by Guy Haines hisself!! (Last Christmas we were gifted with  Jeepers Creepers!!)

We ate ham and salads and  croissants and trifle and popped Christmas Crackers and had a lovely time!!

I shall try and post a picture later

Good Luck with the MAC  BK!

Not sure how I felt about Medium, I liked Patricia Arquett, and the concept is intriquing, but hated the sheriff character, the whole concept was stupid, you
send a  private plane out to pick someone up and bring them to you so you can scream at them they are some kind of scam artist?  I thought the writers could have figured out something better than that , and why would the director have her standing in the plane and him standing half a field away with a dozen other guys and have him screaming the details of "privileged information" so anyone could hear? It was absurd

But enough from critical me!!

You could have had her suddenly say in Latin, "consummatum est" and people would think you had the new TWIN PEAKS of pretension and symbolism.

I once wrote a musical wherein the leading character actress, reunited with her long lost family, said "I'm so happy I could die," had a stroke, keeled over, and the company sang the Finale over her corpse.

I can't really isolate my most listened to CD's because I go through phases.
Lately, I've listened quite often to
"ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM," part of the Verve Jazz Master Series
One longtime favorite is GLENN GOULD'S GOLDBERG VARIATIONS.
For a time I was constantly listening to Leonard Cohen's TEN NEW SONGS (I was writing something sort of about him.)
I've listened often to HAINES HIS WAY and A WONDERFUL GUY (a limited edition release) by the elusive Guy Haines.
Richard Harris: A TRAMP SHINING was a recent fave.
Same with RUTH DRAPER, Selected Monologues, introduced to me by DR Elmore
LATE NIGHT PIANO - a terrific jazz piano compilation I've had for years (Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Bud Powell, Jobim, Shearing, Mulligan/Wilson, etc.)
Carly Simon's TORCH - great music for love affairs gone wrong (or right)
Bill EVans' CONVERSTAONS WITH MYSELF
3 BEETHOVEN STRING QUARTETS by the Takacs String Quartet
CECILIA BARTOLI & ANDRAS SCHIFF - THE IMPATIENT LOVER, Italian songs by Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, et al.
SIMON & GARFUNKEL - PARSLEY, SAGE ROSEMARY & THYME - takes me back, oh yes
PORTRAIT - THE ANONYMOUS 4 - very calming

Are we there yet? Even if not, I must get back to work. Perhaps more later. This is fun.

I just pulled out my mouldy HTML guide and it says that with some characters you might need to use character entities.  For example, for a hyphen, you would use &#45 and &#39 for an apostrophe.  You should be able to find a list of these on some site using Google.

For ECHO

Quote
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

No, but it was a cynical, knockabout farce; I was very much into the campy Off-off-Broadway musicals like PROMENADE and THE GORILLA QUEEN at the Judson Poet's Theatre.  My musical of HANSEL AND GRETEL ended with Hansel's going to medical school on the Witch's money and Gretel's being hanged for burning an old woman to death.

MAC WATCH 2005 - UPDATE FROM BK

First of all, bk sends his heartfelt condolences to DR Jane and DH Keith.

He is now on his way in his automobile to get a wireless device for his Mac.
Unfortunately, everything has not gone as smoothly as hoped for.
It seems the CD-Rom on the Dell is corrupt. Yes, corrupt! Has this computer got no shame?  Because of this shameless corruption, Mr. Mac Man cannot link computers and has to back up the entire computer on Zip discs - which is, of course, time consuming. Once this is done, things should go faster. But it looks like an all-day affair.
Stay tuned for further Mac Watch 2005 updates at this very location.

Jane, so sorry for your loss...La jolie Femme & I offer you this bit of consolation from the great poet Robinson Jeffers:

THE HOUSE-DOG'S GRAVE
(Haig, an English Bulldog)

I've changed my ways a little; I cannot now
Run with you in the evenings along the shore,
Except in a kind of dream; and you, if you dream a moment,
You see me there.

So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front door
Where I used to scratch to go out or in,
And you'd soon open; leave on the kitchen floor
The marks of my drinking-pan.

I cannot lie by your fire as I used to do
On the warm stone,
Nor at the foot of your bed; no, all the nights through
I lie alone.

But your kind thought has laid me less than six feet
Outside your window where firelight so often plays,
And where you sit to read - and I fear often grieving for me -
Every night your lamplight lies on my place.

You man and woman, live so long it is hard
To think of you ever dying.
A little dog would get tired living so long.
I hope that when you are lying

Under the grround like me your lives will appear
As good and joyful as mine.
No, dears, that's too much hope; you are not so well cared for
As I have been,

And never have known the passionate undivided
Fidelities that I knew.
Your minds are perhaps too active, too many-sided...
But to me you were true.

You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.
I loved you well, and was loved.  Deep love endures
To the end and far past the end.  If this is my end,
I am not lonely. I am not afraid.  I am still yours.

Vixmom, JMK, DtM, & elmore, Derbrucer, Panni, Ginny, Ben, Jennifer, JRand,Jay, Tomovoz, MBarnum, Ann, DRLaura, DiT, Stuart & Bruce thank you and I know.

Thank you Charles Pogue and La jolie Femme.  At the moment we are picking up the rugs we had all over the house for Echo and boxing leftover food and treats to give to the needy.  Your poem makes me glad we saved a few special toys and other keepsakes.

In the spring I will take Echo’s ashes to our favorite hiking place on Mt Ashland.

The only downside of our animal companions is that they leave us far too soon. On the other hand, they are with us forever. My dogs from my childhood still come to me in dreams, as do all the others throughout the years.
I sometimes give them guest appearances in screenplays. My last dog, Katie, a sweet white Lab I had for 13 years, is featured in the piece I'm writing now.

Early this morning Keith wrote this poem for Echo.

Echo

My hands are useless now
My words
Spent shells;
There is recognition
Where there is pending loss

Under the shade of the large, black oak
We sat in the charade
Of a timeless embrace
I cradled you from harm;
Now innocence is gone
A small leaf
Lost in a tempest

Like an ancient morality play
With passions rutted well
I witnessed your decline
My terror;
Silent, watchful, searching, always searching
I was monster, marionette, father
Always father

So what is the point, I ask
The point of the sharp edges and hammer blows?
The alphabet of this world is a riddle
Made sensible, at best, in the small moments

Yesterday, without warning
A tongue-bath rained upon my cheek
And a head sought a familiar hand;
To look at you
There is more, much more
Than pet and personality

This morning, in the early hours
I bend my face into the rivers of your breathing
And whisper emotion and comfort;
Unexpectedly, from behind tired iris and cornea
Diamonds split from your rule
And cut my sight
To the core of speech

Now, my gaze reveals only trees;
You have escaped
The ravager of flesh and bone
To join the companions
Of your wild, weightless youth
In the secret wards of a mountain meadow.

Run free.

Good Aftertnoon!

So much to do!  So much to do!

I did watch all of FLOWER DRUM SONG.  :D

"I have a wet back."

-Could they get away with a line like that nowadays?

I then proceeded to get a few hours of sleep.  I woke up at 11:00, and finished cleaning up in the kitchen - putting away all the dry dishes, silverware, pots and pans.  Then I remembered I had to bring some stuff up this week - working on some projects - so I had to gather all that stuff together.  Packed the car.  Filled the gas tank - only $1.64 per gallon in Richmond!  Made a quick run to the grocery store for some brunch, then started the drive back up to Fairfax.

It was 73 degrees when I left Richmond!  -I made the drive up in shorts and a t-shirt with the windows down.  Good driving weather.  Lots of cars on the road this afternoon - the usual idiots, but not accidents or close calls.

I've been taking care of things around my parents' house for the past hour or so, as well as checking on e-mail and phone messages...  So...

-I still have to read the rest of today's posts...  If not now, then after the show.

Just sayin' HI!

So much to do!  So much to do!

<breathe>

Whew!

Laters...

I had a meeting this morning, then treated myself to a leisurely lunch at the Coffee Mill, one of DR Panni's favorite haunts in Toronto. I did some work between courses, and also eavesdropped on the conversation at the next table. Three gents were talking books and films. And though one of them was so well known that his picture adorned the restaurant wall, the conversation was not nearly as enjoyable or informed (I was tempted to make a few corrections) as the ones here at HHW, certainly the most excellent site on the Internet.

The top ten CD's I play the most...this probably shifts and changes now and again...But here our the albums I come up with the most (in no particular order):

1)PROVIDENCE, the score from the movie by the great, great Miklos Rozsa, my favourite composer.

2)HAINES HIS WAYS...I find Guy Haines a much better singer than that pale imitator Guy Haynes

3) GORDON MACRAE, THE BEST OF THE CAPITAL YEARS...pity, Gordo didn't do more albums like this...a fine I'll Remember April and Indian Summer.

4) JOHNNY HARTMAN, THE VOICE THAT IS!...This album probably gets played more than any other I have...It may be my favourite.  Nothing better for a summer sunset, sitting on the balcony with a glass of good wine, gazing out over the canyon.

5)VIC DAMONE: THE COMPLETE COLUMBIA SINGLES COLLECTION...But just disc 2, starting about cut 3...there are few things smoother than this going down...Sinatra may be right when he said Damone had "the best pipes in the business."

6)JUDY KAYE: WHERE, OH WHERE, RARE SONGS OF THE THEATRE.  Just a piano and Kaye's pure voice and precise diction.  Windflowers is maybe one of my favourite top five songs of all time.  It breaks my heart as does I Wish It So.

7)BROOK BENTON: FORTY GREATEST HITS...I have lot of Brook Benton, but this is the most comprehensive, with all his major hits including those two great ones with Dinah Washington, Rockin' Good Way and Baby, You've Got What It Takes...It's got some undistinguished crap on it too, but also some nice surprises like A House Is Not A Home and A Walk On The Wild Side.

8) BUDDY CLARK:  FOR YOU ALONE...One of my favourite baritones.  Great versions of Haunted Heart and Rhode Island Is Famous For You.

9) GLENN YARBOROUGH: THE LONELY THINGS...All Rod McKuen Songs.  Love Yarborough's distinctive voice and this album, first bought as a record when I was in college, still evokes for me those youthful days of Byronic passion and possibilities; wild yearning and tortured angst.

10) JOHNNY HARTMAN:  THIS ONE'S FOR TEDI...if only to hear his brilliantly, heartbreaking rendition of another of my top five songs, THE BALLAD OF THE SAD YOUNG MEN.  His rendition made it one of my top five.

There are other albums and artists who gets lots of play here that didn't make the cut.  Early Sinatra, Dick Haymes, Leslie "Hutch" Hutchinson, Helen Merrill, Rosemary Clooney, and  Bobby Short.  More Damone, Benton, Hartman.  Rozsa violin concertos and scores,  Goldsmith's score to Legend and Steiner, Korngold, Vaugh Williams, Ravel, etc.  Like Elmore, my most frequently played musical is probably Boys From Syracuse.

The most frequently played stuff are actually probably compilation tapes I've made of show tunes (movies and stage), standards, rock and roll, and cowboy music.

Julie Andrews - Broadway's Fair Julie/Heartrending Ballads & Raucous Ditties

DRD-I-T, when "Don't Go In The Lion's Cage Tonight" was on LP, it was my favorite Julie Andrews album.  I bet she never thought when she recorded "Burlington Bertie" she never knew she'd sing it in STAR! around 4 years later! Tony walton and I had a great discussion about the recording and its wonderful arranger when I was doing CHARLEY?, and we wanted to get some of that album's music hall sound into the show.

I'm trying to catch up on the posts.

I watched "Medium" last night and I enjoyed it.  I'd never seen or heard of the actor who plays her husband.  I like the idea that he doesn't try to talk her out of using her "gift."  He seems to be all for it.  I wonder if the real woman's husband was that supportive.  I do, however, agree with Vixmom's criticisms.  I didn't understand why she stepped onto the steps leading out of the plane and then just stopped.  And then they yelled at each other.  That made no sense.  But that didn't stop me from enjoying the overall show. :)

As for the official Topic of the Day, here are some of the CDs that I listen to the most (I could think of 11, but there are more):

City of Angels (original Broadway cast)
Extensions by The Manhattan Transfer
Follies (the original Broadway cast recording)
Merrily We Roll Along (I prefer the original Broadway cast, with the York version produced by our very own BK a very close second)
The Mystery of Edwin Drood (original Broadway cast)
The Songs from Ragtime [I love the original Broadway cast (and its completeness), but for a couple of songs, I like the versions on this CD better]
Short Stories by Janis Siegel and Fred Hersch
The Spitfire Grill (original cast with Liz Callaway)
The Stephen Sondheim Album (produced by our very own BK)
Sweeney Todd (original Broadway cast)
Unsung Sondheim (again, produced by our very own BK)

my 10 most played (soundtrack) cd's .... (in no particular order)

- Nine
- Kristina Fran Duvemala

Welcome Ozderek!  I forgot about both of these.  I have to add Nine to my list, especially since they released the COMPLETE 2-CD original Broadway cast recording.  I bought Kristina Fran Duvemala several years ago and, even though I don't understand a word of it, I love the music.  Even though I never get tired of listening to it (when I do listen to it), I haven't listened to it very much, so it can't be added to my list. ::)

Critic's Choice has a good selection, though they're a bit on the pricey side.  The catalog I just got has a really nice "CD armoire" that looks relatively small, but opens up, pantry-style to hold over 800 CDs.

Now here's a CD I may have worked on and know nothing about!

You definitely DID "work" on this CD.  I stumbled upon it at the Borders store near Dayton Mall sometime after May 31, 1997.  I know the date because the CD has coupons in it that were already when I bought it.  Anyway, it's a compilation of tracks from many of bk's albums and includes something from Liz Callaway's Loesser CD.  You'd sent me that, so I just assumed that some of the other selections might be your work, too.  Here's the barcode number, if that would help you, or and other interested DR's, track it down:  030206000122.

Sorry to have been E&T all day long. It's been a long, long day.

Welcome, new member ozderek. Glad to have you with us.

DR Jane, I am so very sorry about your loss. My thoughts are with you.

I adore the show '1776,' but I do not like the Broadway show album. Howard DaSilva was ailing and unavailable, Ron Holgate is hoarse and in poor voice, William Daniels is also gravelly and doesn't have his timing down quite yet, and Betty Buckley sounds steely and unattractive for the willowy Martha Jefferson.

I much, much prefer the film soundtrack as the Broadway stars are in much better voice and the ones who are different from the show album like John Cullum are infinitely better singers, but it's not on CD (is it?), so I just have to watch the film or listen to my LP soundtrack when I want a '1776' fix.

I had a very mixed opinion on THE AVIATOR. There are some dazzling sequences including the HELL'S ANGELS dogfight filming which I thought was as accomplished as anything Scorsese has ever filmed. That and some other sequences worked very, very well.

The thing that irritated me the most was the casting of Cate Blanchette. Now, I think she's a talented actress, and she certainly had Hepburn's voice and physical manner down (for the most part; there were slips in her accent that no one seems to have caught). But, I'm sorry, nothing personal but Katharine Hepburn was a beauty in the 1930s, and Cate Blanchette is a fairly homely-looking woman and no match for the really striking appearance that Katharine Hepburn made on film. Lots of people think of the rawer appearance of Hepburn from middle age, but she was (to my gay eyes at least) a gorgeous woman back then. Alongside the baby-faced DiCaprio, Cate looked almost like his mother, and I never believed them as a couple for a second.

I also thought the script was a mess. I found it very unsatisfying to show us Hughes' manias with some simplistic mother-son washing/discussion from his youth as the only explanation of their foundation. I wanted more explanation or investigation into his phobias, and I didn't get it.

I ran across this article today. It seems there is a huge outpouring of support which is great to see. Let's just hope there is even more in the coming weeks seeing as they still need much more help.

Anyone else see COMMITTED, the new sitcom on NBC tonight? It was quirky and funny, and I enjoyed it. Should make a nice oddball couple with SCRUBS on Tuesday nights.

DRMattH, I'd have to fight you on that one!  Of course it could be the fact that I saw the show about a week after it won all the Tonys, but the original production is etched in my memory, from William Daniels beginning the show on a platform jutting over the orchestra pit to the signing at the end.  I never thought the film, for all of its fine moments, came near the excitement and drive of the show.  Virginia Vestoff on the original cast recording and in the theatre was so much better than she came off in the film.

On the other hand, since I think Betty Buckley's voice is only good for peeling paint off walls, I do prefer the beautiful Blythe Danner.  Pat Zipprodt's costumes for Martha Jefferson in the film were the only new ones and a vast improvement.

I didn't see Ken Howard; by then he was gone from the show and John Fink, who had a brief starring role in a sitcom after 1776, had taken over the part.  I always wondered what happened to him.  Rex Everhart, who replaced Da Sllva on the recording, was in the show when I saw it.  I got to know him while he was doing WOMAN OF THE YEAR with La Bacall.

Jeez Bruce, other than my compilation CD's (which are made mostly from BK produced CD's with a few additional cuts from other shows), most of the CD's I overplay have been produced by you.  I doubt that you were fishing for a compliment when you asked the question, but there's the answer.  Oh sure,  an occasional oddity like "Your Zowie Face" from "In Like Flint" or "Tracy's Theme" by Spencer Ross from a televised version of "Philadelphia Story" (plus anything by the lovely and talented Peter Cincotti and Michael Buble) will show up, but the rest is pretty much your stuff.   Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney and John Pizzarelli will often show up plus half of the things in Tomofoz's and Jayrand's library.   I would still love it if I knew there were more forthcoming from you-- there is so much good stuff only you could do justice to-- but reality is reality.   I have had large doses of reality lately.  Not even a spoonful of sugar helps some of this medicine go down.  (WATCH IT, TCB!!!!!!)

I saw the original stage version, too, DR elmore, and think it's one of the greatest shows ever mounted. My comments were only in regard to the cast album which was obviously recorded soon after the opening of the show, and the stars sound exhausted to my ears. All of the singing on the film soundtrack sounds superior to me including the wonderful Virginia Vestoff.

Not only do I think the stage version superior to the film as a whole, but I've done the stage show in two different productions, and the show never failed to move me as a performer. I was on stage openly weeping as the signing was going on AT EVERY PERFORMANCE.

I don't hear it, and I'm sure that part of it's my affection for that original production.  I am going to listen to it again tomorrow since I haven't heard it in some time.

Today was JEEPERS CREEPERS, most of which I liked a lot, especially Judy Kaye's gypsy sequence and the Andrews Sisters-like "Aurora."  I can't recall the name of the song Rebecca does from VOYAGE TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH, but it's quite beautiful.

Good Evening!

Now that I've some time to think about it, here's my Top 10 Most Listened To CDs:

1 - "Passion in Jazz" - Terry Trotter Trio
2 - big (OBC) - There's just something so "happy" about this score to me.
3 - Merrily We Roll Along (OBC) - Love that Overture!  Love those horns!
4 - "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" - Dawn Upshaw.  -However, I usually skip over Harbison's "Mirabai Songs".  -Oh, and is there a recording of "The Old Maid and the Thief"?
5 - Violet (OCR)
6 - "New Moon Shine" - James Taylor.  Although I go through JT phases with "October Road", "Greatest Hits (1)" and "Hourglass"
7 - "An Innocent Man" - Billy Joel
8 - "Tears of Joy" - Tuck & Patti - I like their latest stuff, mainly originals, but I'm hoping they do another album of standards.
9 - "So Many Stars" - Kathleen Battle - A very neat crossover album, jazz meets classical and vice versa.
10 - "The Harold Alren Songbook" - Ella Fitzgerald

I much, much prefer the film soundtrack as the Broadway stars are in much better voice and the ones who are different from the show album like John Cullum are infinitely better singers, but it's not on CD (is it?), so I just have to watch the film or listen to my LP soundtrack when I want a '1776' fix.

Matt, I have the extended laserdisc version and made a CD from the soundtrack.  I think I did a pretty good job (in my humble opinion, IMHO in Internet lingo).  It's longer than the actual soundtrack album because I added reprises and a bit of dialogue to help with the continuity.  Would you want a copy?  Let me know.  I also have the original London cast recording of 1776.  It's very interesting...and very British. ::)

Dan the Man, I did know that Eisner died.  He is my favourite comic illustrator and writer.  THE SPIRIT was brilliant!  I collected them from years when Warren was publishing them.  Still have them and revisit them often. Harvey comics also put out some Spirit comics earlier than Warren. I'd like to find some of those.  I also have many of Eisner's graphic novels.  He was a hugely influential artist and writer (people forget his writing talent). He inspired a lot of comic greats who regard him as the master.

Thanks for the pic of the Eisner dame.
