Well, you've read the notes, you've wriged while you've read, you've read while you've wriged, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home.  I'm sure they'll be wriging when they do.

Congratulations on the POWERBOOK conversion!

Wonderful Kritzer photos.  I think I may print them out and put them in the book!

iTunes is a wonderful program, especially with my hip iPod and iPod accessories.  On my iPod, I have 7.60 gigs of Broadway, 2.56 of which is Sondheim.   2.45 gigs of opera too.  And 3.94 gigs of other fun stuff.  And it's true: the CDDB track lookup device is a godsend.

Except it doesn't know everything.  It didn't know the English National Opera's complete recording of Pacific Overtures.  Which I took as a personal assault.

What a good idea.  I've got some more, which I'll post tomorrow after resizing them.

I'm still here. (a Follies reference) I don't know how to resize. The way I resize is by e-mailing the pic to myself and then copying it to my desktop. What's the easy way?

...and I'll read the answer tomorrow. The wooden rooster/chicken is quiet, but the bed is calling me.

It's easy in iPhoto, but without opening the program I can't remember what I do.  I think you click on the pic, and it has something that comes up that allows you to change the pixels - I just type in 300 in the first box, and the program completes the second box.  You also have to click jpeg, and then you put the resized version somewhere in a folder (I created one called webpix).  Let me go there and see what I do, but first I must wrig.

Post by: bk on January 05, 2005, 12:31:42 AM
It's a bit complicated to explain in a post - basically you highlight the photo, go to file and click export.  That gives you a window - you choose jpeg, then click on the "change pixels" thing above the pixel numbers.  erase what's in the left box and type in 300, the program automatically fills in the right box.  Then click at the bottom of the screen (can't remember what it says) - then you get a new window- save it to your desktop and click "export".  That puts the resized photo on your desktop.  Drag it into one of your iPhoto folders and voila.  Once it's in your folder, you can trash the desktop photo.

What am I doing up so early here on the east coast.

MY ask BK question:

How do you or is it the vocalist decided on the title of the album or just doing it a self title?

Example:  Anywhere I Wonder Liz Callaway Sings Frank Loesser.... Why was Anywhere I Wonder Chosen

Example: Emily Skinner's solo album is just Emily Skinner.

Example: Michelle Nicastro On My Own  Conte, porary Songs From Broadway.

There are others but these are the ones I pulled off the self first

Dear BK, you have once again used a word in an appropriate and proper sense.  Wrig is a perfectly acceptable Olde English verb, in it's variant spelling (and pronunciation).  It means to furnish with special gear, or to put in condition or correct position for use.

Synonyms, which also have their Olde English variants (and which I will list here) include to eqwip, to adjuwst, to awwange, and to constwuct.  (If all this sounds like Mel Blanc was a linguistics expert, thufferin' thuccotatsch of course he was!)

So, congrats on wrigging your Powerbook!

Liz and I both liked Anywhere I Wander as a title.  Just sounded evocative.

None of the song titles on Em's album seemed appropriate as an album title, and frankly I was tired of album titles and I thought it looked and sounded elegant just to have her name.

On My Own - again, we just thought it sounded good, plus it was her signature song in Les Miz.

I'm about to listen to Donald's radio show. Haven't done that in about a month. I sit with my cup of coffee and printouts awaiting the wonders of internet radio.

George, you have the most amazing collection of CDs! Your 1776 collection sounds like my Forum and Call Me Madam collections. I have the OBC of Forum, the London production with Frankie Howerd, the movie and the Nathan Lane revival. For CMM I have the 12 songs by Ethel, the Dinah Shore "cast recording", the Tyne Daly Encores recording, the Prism release which combines Dinah and some of Ethel on one disk along with a couple of tracks from a London production and then I did with Call Me Madam what you did with 1776, making a CD of the soundtrack using my DVD as the source. It's also longer than the recently released CD of the film soundtrack because I, too, included bits of dialogue and sometimes when it was difficult to make the cut, I just included incidental music. It was a lot of work, but I'm happy with the end result.

Good morning, all!  I'm sitting here rather vague about the day ahead.  So far, the coffee isn't helping much, so I'm going to blame it on the weather.  The only things I'm certain about are the CDs I'm playing in the office today:
JEEPERS CREEPERS
1776
THE ROSE & THE BRIAR, CD companion to a new book about American ballads, it includes Jean Ritchie's "Barbara Allen," and tracks by a ton of neat folk like Duke Ellington, Marty Robbins, Bob Dylan, Jan & Dean, Jelly Roll Morton, Burl Ives and more.  The book is a neat collection of essays on various ballads, beginning with "Barbara Allen," including others like "Frankie and Johnny," "Omi Wise," and  "The Foggy, Foggy Dew."  It's highly recommended.

DRJose, I loved the wedding photo!  You make one spooky bride.  I first thought you looked like Mother Bates, but on second look, you're much sultrier.

At this moment, I have no questions, but also no answers, so perhaps later.

JRand,

I just saw Bette Davis in THE LETTER. I don't know if it's her finest performance, but, IMHO, it's at the very top of the list.

For Gene, I'd pick THE RAZOR'S EDGE.

Interestingly, both movies are based on Somerset Maugham stories. (I can't think of a favorite Joan Crawford role. Maybe I should see RAIN.)

Congrats on your powerbook dear BK.

My questions, Has anyone seen the new Broadway shows, "Little Women" and La Cage Aux Folles"?

Those who have, what are your opions, are they worth seeing?  I have been considering taking the Vixter the former and the DH to the latter.  We saw the original production back in October 1987  a week before we were married, and loved it.  I was overwhelmed by the wonderful sets on that production, particularly one scene that started in the dressing room in the rear of the stage and the whole dressing room slowly moved forward and expanded until it was the whole front of the stage.  Really lovely staging.

Just caught up with yesterday's posts.  Mr. Kevin Spirtas is lovely to look at, too bad about those poligamy laws

1776 was the first Broadway show I ever saw, I saw it with the original cast.  A friend of WFO's was in the cast as  I recall, but his name mometarially escapes me, Duane somebody I think.....

If WFO stops being a wussburger perhaps he'll jump in and let us know.

I guess now he has turned into a god he is sitting back on his golden throne and lifting not a finger

Thanks for the photo info, bk.

I had a strange night and am exhausted. A good way to start the day! Half woke up to the strong smell of skunk. Must've been right outside. Then I fell into kind of a half-sleep and had a dream that a burglar had come into the house. I tried to scream, but couldn't get my voice out. Finally, I yelled, loud as I could, "Burglar! Burglar!" ...At which point, in the real world, Abie got out of his little dog bed - near my people bed - and ran out of the bedroom. So, I think I really did yell out. (When I was a kid, I woke myself up talking or screaming, almost every night. Usually I was being chased by Russians or some other Bad Men (a Benjamin Kritzer reference) in my dreams.)
BAck to last night.... Eventually, I fell asleep again and had a dream that I was stuck in some freezing end of the world place and had to take the one and only plane out -- thousands were lined up. This was sort of mixed in with the fact that I had made some kind of appointment to "leave" here permanently (my home environment, I guess) but had no idea what time the leave-taking was supposed to take place. I just knew I had to get ready for a cab coming to get me. It was very unsettling.
Yesterday's Gregory Peck dream was much more fun.
...No - this is not the beginning of the Panni's Nightly Dream series.

DR Panni, I also had a terrible dream last night. I dreamt that I had just moved into a beautiful little bungalow on the beach and a tsunami came and wiped it out. I was up on a cliff watching my home drift out to see, along with my collection of Allison Hayes and June Kenney memorabilia.

I think I have been reading too many of the horror stories from the devastation in Asia...which is all so very sad...and difficult to comprehend.

Hmmm...best Bette Davis performances. That is a tough one...there are so many and I am not sure if I can pick any particular one. Oddly enough, her PERRY MASON episode stands out to me...when Raymond Burr was away for awhile the show used various celebrities in his "role" and Bette was one of them. She did a good job, and of course, uncovered the killer!

Mixed feelings over the ending? I certainly wish the movie had finished about 20 minutes before it did (thank you, Hays Code). But Bette Davis's performance is one of her most controlled and least mannered - and I couldn't take my eyes off her.

Here's a little anecdote I've probably told before (Lord knows I'm a man of remarkably few anecdotes :) ):

I was part of the Wesley Balk Institute's composer/librettist workshop which was held here in Portland several years ago (they do them all over the US, I'm sure other DRs have heard of it).  Anyway, most of us composer types were using Encore, which at the time (pre-Sibelius and Finale) was the ruling software (and DRCP, I still have it, probably the only luddite left who does, LOL).  Except for one poor guy who was still handwriting his notation.  Now you must realize that part of the Institute's madness is you get your "assignment" late on one day, then have the rest of that evening to write your piece, arrange it, and have it completely notated and ready for performance by the next morning.  Well, it was common for all of us computer-notaters to be moaning and bitching about our s/w problems.  But John, the pencil and paper guy, was always just fine, until one morning he joked that his pencil lead had broken the night before.  At which point, I quipped, "Are you still using a Number 2 pencil?  I think they've released the 2.5 upgrade."   :o

Maybe you had to be there......

1776 was also (I think) the first Broadway show I saw, in its first National Tour (almost all of the OBC was in it).  I still distinctly remember two things about the production--first, how steep the rake was, and, second, how surprised I was to hear there was underscoring during some of the dialogue, just like a real-live movie!   ::)

I agree that it's not to be missed, unfortunately, IMHO (in my humble opinion in Internet lingo), I think the show will lose some of it's power when it opens in LA. On the evening I saw the show (during Hannukah) Miss Feldshuh spoke after the performance and she mentioned the impending move to Los Angeles. She's a little nervous about the transfer because the show played at the intimate Helen Hayes Theatre (formerly the Little Theatre) on 44th Street and it's moving to a HUGE theatre in LA with over 1000 seats. Part of the power of Golda's Balcony came from the shared intimacy and the feeling that you could reach out and touch Feldshuh as Golda, even from the balcony. I think (hope) her performance will get the kudos it deserves but I don't know how well the show will play in an LA theatre barn. That's not to disparage LA theatre, we have our own barns here in New York, the Gershwin (FKA the Uris) and the Minskoff come to mind, but a small show needs a small space. Ah, well. We shall see.

JMK, I assume the Wesley Balk Institute is named after the late, great Wesley Balk from the University of Minnesota and co-founder of Minnesota Opera. I studied with Balk at the University, taking his legendary (at least in Minnesota) "Acting for Music Theatre" class. It was then that I noticed the trend away from "musical comedy" to "music theatre" (or musical theatre).

The very same.  He was quite ill when he came to Portland--I remember he had a portable oxygen tank that he carted around on a little luggage cart.  He did the acting side and Ben Krywocz (spelling?  I can never remember how many consonants in a row his name has, LOL) did the composer/librettist side.

I'm proud of all my children.  I don't know if it's the ONE I'm most proud of, but, as I've said before, Unsung Irving Berlin was an amazing experience (going through Mr. Berlin's trunk songs) and the album turned out just the way I wanted it to.  l'm also very proud of Unsung Sondheim (ther first of its kind - oft imitated) and Liz Callaway's Frank Loesser album - just because they were the first two we did and because, despite the fact that none of us knew what we were doing, they still came out really well.

BK question.

I picked up the DVD of THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL this weekend and began watching it last night (had to stop in order to watch THE AMAZING RACE).

Besides Cindy Williams, what other cast members are you still in touch with from that film.

Also, what is the story behind the gal who plays Joy Full...she just cracks me up. Whatever happened to her?

(Of course some of this might be answered in the DVD commentary, but I have not yet listened to that.)

I love sleep mode.  I used to turn my Dell off at night, and it would take a good ten minutes getting it on, loaded, and starting up AOL.  I just tapped the space bar and voila, there I was.

DISCUSSION OF LAST NIGHT'S AMAZING RACE:

Okay it doesn't surprise me that in last week's TO BE CONTINUED episode they made it seem like the wrestlers were out.  But does anybody else find it maddening that they got to the gate first and proceeded to get the #1 card.  I really do not find this team to be very useful.

There are a couple more teams who I think should go (they just don't seem to finish near the top).  Adam/Rebecca are one.

I also really dislike Victoria/Jonathan.  He is like a Jekyll and Hyde, because sometimes he is so sweet.  But if I hear him yell at her again I will scream.  However, I also cannot take her constant whining.  Eat the soup!  I'm sure it was horrible.  But I actually really admired Rebecca for the way she didn't complain and gobbled it down.

I replayed the gate incident a bunch of times and have no idea who hit Freddie in the head.  His tantrum was kind of funny.  I was glad his team wasn't eliminated.

I also thought it was obvious that they were simply editing the final run to the pit stop to make it look like the two teams were neck and neck.  But clearly the last placed team had not arrived at the soup place in time.  So I knew they were toast.

It was a good episode.  But I didn't like it that the team who should have finished last, ending up getting the fast forward.  But I suppose with their talent (or lack of it), they probably have little chance of winning.

I am very impressed again with kris and jon.  No matter what obstacles they face, they always finish top 2.

Btw, that waterpolo guy was not really a champ was he? :)

LOL DR Jennifer! Yep I stayed up and watched it this time.

Good episode. Freddy's getting so upset over the gate incedent was a bit ridiculous. The other girl who got hit by the gate didn't make a fuss at all...of course she doesn't make a living with her face, I guess. But really Freddy and Kendra I do not care for that much.

I also like Jon and Chris. Jon cut a fine figure at the water polo game!

Gene Tierney:  "Leave Her to Heaven" and "The Razor's Edge" -- two amazing female "villainesses" and played to perfection without a false note.  "Laura" -- absolutely perfect mystery heroine, again with no false note.

Bette Davis:  "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex," "Jezebel," "Now, Voyager," "The Little Foxes," "The Letter," "All This and Heaven, Too", "Dark Victory," "All About Eve," "The Virgin Queen," "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" and "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte."

Joan Crawford: "The Women," "A Woman's Face", "Autumn Leaves."

I keep twelve acolytes (along with my leaping lords and laying geese) in the closet whilst they do my every bidding.  They're in there now, bidding on a still from Li'l Abner on eBay.

I had a good deal of fun excoriating CoRA.

I'm very pleased with that review, even though it gives away something it shouldn't (he obviously didn't think that twist was so important).  I'd be interested to know what the gaping hole in its logic is, as I was very careful not to leave any gaping holes in logic.  Perhaps gaping holes are subjective.  But it's a really well-thought-out review and pretty much a rave and I'm thrilled to have it.
Title: Re:MERRILY WE WRIG ALONG

Jennifer: I don't think his comments are mean at all.  I think he thought there was a hole in its logic somewhere - but unless I knew what that hole was, I wouldn't be able to address what he's thinking.  No one else has thought there was a hole in the book's logic, so I'm really curious - it could be a mis-perception on his part or maybe there is one that got by me and that no one else has caught.  As for "haphazard grammar" sure.  Sometimes it's haphazard and sometimes it's on purpose.

I think Freddie (or however you spell it) did go a bit overboard.  But I do understand why he was mad.  That must have really hurt!  Plus it put them at a huge disadvantage (getting almost the last number).

It was pretty funny listening to him though: "when i find out who did this, i will break them in half." :)

Yep Kris and Jon are really sweet.  I've never seen a couple who never argues.

Well maybe the "daughter" who got hit didn't make a big deal because she didn't get hit as hard.

I do see why you don't like kendra.  She seems a bit spoiled.  But I think they make a good team, and seem to mostly do well in the standings.

Right now though I see Jon/Kris, jonathan/victoria (unfortunately) and either hayden/aaron or Kendra/freddie as the final 3.

All right, some more Kritzer photographs:

Here is the back of the school yard at Crescent Heights.  All that space in the foreground was where Mrs. Wallett's bungalow was located.  To the right was what used to be the lunch area, where Benjamin first laid eyes on Susan Pomeroy.

Re:  hole in logic.   Without giving away too much, I believe he's referring to the "secret e-mailer."  I'm not sure if it's a "gaping" hole in logic, but it is the only plot device that seemed (to me, anyway--please don't excoriate me) a little contrived.

Re: the review

Yes, he clearly spent a lot of time on it.  I'm not sure what he thought was the hole in logic.  But I'm thinking it had to do with the twists (that is how it came across to me).

He used some big words.  But to me "haphazard" was meant in a negative way - that's why I said I thought it was mean.

You should ask him to clarify the hole for you.

Contrived it may be (although it's carefully explained in the last chapter), but it's not a "hole".  Perhaps one could conceive it as such, but it really isn't, at least not in my mind.

Here is a photograph of the alley that led to the back of Susan Pomeroy's duplex.  When I was writing the book it was the one location I thought I had to be totally mis-remembering.  I didn't go back to the neighborhood until months after I'd finished the book - I wanted it all to be from my memory.  I drove around and saw that all the details were correct - I then drove to the alley and I was hornswoggled to see I was right in my memory.  The newer duplex that's there now had a stairway leading up to the back door, directly from the alley.

-Although, if "Flower Drum Song" had come on again last night during the wee hours of the morning, I probably would have watched it again.

Question for BK - Are you planning on getting an iPod now?

*And, actually, iPods come in handy for more than just storing music.  Computer techs use them as backup storage devices - which come in handy when transferring files to a new computer.  -I was about to suggest yesterday that while you were running around yesterday buying your wireless stuff, that you might as well go ahead and buy an iPod while you were out...

-Oh, and PC's have a Sleep Mode too.  I use it frequently, especially when I'm just "shutting down" during the day for a little while (lunch, running an errand, etc.).

Ah MBarnum, I see you watched last night's Amazing Race. Yeah!

I watched it, too.  I wish I had taped it.  Aside from the gate incident, I wouldn't have minded going over some of the water polo segments.  As Bob Hope would say, "Grrrrrrrrroawllllll!"

The set up for the water polo task made it much more difficult than it actually was.  The water wasn't actually even at regulation depth--Freddy and Aaron both looked like they were standing on the bottom.  And as you pointed out, Jen, that goalie was pretty bad.  The most difficult aspect of the task probably was the guys squeezing themselves into the speedoes (grrrrrrrrroawllllll!)  Can you imagine if the father and daughter team went for the water polo?

And while the soup thing grossed me out, I kind of want to try a small bowl of it anyway.

I also like Kris and Jon more after this episode and I hope that they are the winners.  I'm finding that the other two model/actor teams are getting on my nerves.  The wrestlers and Adam and Rebecca I can take or leave--I doubt that either team will last beyond the next two episodes.  And I once again state my hope that Mr. Yell-ow will meet with a painful accident.

Whew, a one-part Parrish.  All is right.  Now, here is the amazing thing - forget The Amazing Race, this is the Amazing Thing:  Yesterday, Mr. Mac Man was trying to teach me to scan and get the image to my desktop.  He couldn't get it to appear there and couldn't figure out where it was going.  Well, it took awhile this morning, and I'm not quite sure how I did it, but I scanned Leslie and managed to get it to my desktop (the scanning thing is set up to preview and that's where I was getting messed up, but I somehow got around it.  All the ones he was scanning were going into some other photo program, which I'm going to have him nuke when he comes over.

That's exactly what Betsy and I said last night--when they got up to the roadblock, I said, "Betcha they'll do the raft."  Just like the old couple (can't remember their names).

We HATE Jonathan.  Betsy said last night, "If he yelled at me like that, I would stop dead in my tracks and tell him, 'I'm not moving until you correct your attitude.  We will lose the race right here and now, so it's up to you.'"  As you can see, she has learned how to deal with me rather well, LOL, though I keep telling her after every episode of TAR, "See, compared to Jonathan, I'm pretty good, aren't I?"  Sometimes she even answers.   ;D

I'm not really in touch with anyone.  It is all explained in the various commentaries.  I occasionally talk to Leslie Ackerman and Cindy, of course. As you'll hear in the commentary, Joy Full (Susan Stewart) was one of my faves and I'd love to find her.  We tried everything we knew to find her for the documentary - to no avail.  I know she was a model, and she was also in the Robert Mitchum Farewell, My Lovely as an extra (dancing nude in a with another girl, if I recall).  I'm also remembering that she ended up working at A&M Records.  Her real name may be something other than Susan Stewart however.

I have to admit that this is one of those editions of TAR where I still don't have the names of the teams down as well as I should at this point.  But I was not sad to see Gus/Hera go.  And I would not be sad to see (of course) Jonathan and Victoria go either.  Unfortunately, the rest of their names are a mish-mash to me, except for Adam & Rebecca, mostly due to his silly little hair-horns.  But there is no one I am rooting for to win, at this point.  Only those I am rooting for to lose.  Not unlike a recent election.

Gotta chime in on the Amazing Race talk.  JMK, I'm with Betsy on this one.  If he tried to talk to me like that, he'd find himself in a world of hurt.  What amazes me is that she actually MARRIED this guy beforehand.  I sincerely hope that this ends that marriage and she finds herself some self confidence.  Jonathan, of course, should die alone.
I was sorry to lose Hera and Gus...but I knew they'd go for the paddle challenge...and it would screw them over.  Sad, but not surprising.  I've never been that fond of them, but I got a huge kick out of Gus getting happy over the beer and Hera having to drag him out of the pub the other week. :)

I have all the Forum recordings you have (London only on record, though) but I only have the Tyne Daly Madam.  I also made a soundtrack CD from the laserdisc of Scrooge.  So far, those are the only soundtracks that I've made.  The other one that I really want to do (and it's on DVD) is "The Muppet Movie."  The actual released soundtrack has different orchestrations!

BK, I just emailed Les and I'm sure she'll contact you if she has info on Susan Stewart.

TAR Teams:

We actually really like Rebecca, hate Adam (what a wussburger--I mean, how many times can he scream for his Mommy during challenges?  Evidently several).

Started out liking Hayden & Aaron or whatever the hell their names are, but they're starting to annoy us.

I'm finding Kendra and Freddy (?) increasingly annoying, too--especially Kendra's unbelievable comments about the "breeding" in Africa.

Jonathan & Victoria I've mentioned above.

Which leaves Kris & Jon (does anyone else think she's Britney Spears' undiscovered twin?).  They seem to be the happiest couple and consistently do well in the challenges.  They're who I'm rooting for currently.

DR Dan, the one thing about Mr. Yellow (Jonathan) is that he can be so nice as well.  That throws me off.  Cause he's not just a little nice.  When he's nice, he is nicer than most.  He helped Freddie, he gave the old people money (grandparents), he played so lovingly with the african children.  It just defies logic that he could be so abusive on tv.  His bad mode is pretty bad.  I mean he knows he's on tv.  So you'd think he'd try to tone it down.

Also, unlike last season, I don't think this is the editing.  When he's yelling at his wife, it's pretty clear that they are not taking things out of context or order.  I'd like to hear more about how he feels about his editing.  I may check out some of the reality tv sites.

BK, I too think it is a very good review.  This is what I was talking about being the difference between a professional review and amateur-hack spewing on Amazon.com.  Whether one agrees with everything in the review or not, one has to admit that it is very well thought-out, as you say, and the reviewer goes into detail.

Jonathan is the devil! And I don't think he would ever see that he is in the wrong...with anything, ever!

Jon and Kris are the two that I could swear were not in TAR until recently. LOL! Talk about keeping a low profile!

I liked Gus and Hera and will miss them.

DR Stuart, here are the teams that are left on TAR:

1.Kris/Jon (the couple who finished 2nd) and who get along so well (she is blonde). I LOVE THEM and also want them to win.

2. Hayden/Aaron (she has the dark bob - they sort of argue here and there - he was the guy who had trouble finishing the soup). I sort of like them, but she's been getting on my nerves.

3. Freddie/Kendra (the guy who freaked that the gate hit him, and the girl who is spoiled and whocomplained about the breeding in africa).

4.Adam/Rebecca (he has the devil hairdo, and she is the one who slurped the soup).

5. The wrestlers- Bollo (sp?) and i forget her name.  But i think you know who they are.

6. Jonathan/Victoria (the guy who screams at his wife aka, Mr. Yellow).

I also think/hope 4 and 5 go soon.  And I agree, Rebecca is sort of nice.  But adam is a baby.

Do these participants see the edited episodes before they are broadcast?

One message board thought it would be great if Jonathan and Victoria got to the last run for the money, and Victoria sat down and told Jon to ^%$# off!  And the other team wins.

I like Adam and Rebecca....LOL....so far....they just plod along and stay in the middle of the pack mostly by luck -

By the way, our Elsinore Theater is showing the classic comedy IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT tonight at 7pm. I am hoping to go to it. It also happens that Clark Gable (star of IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT) performed live on the stage at the Elsinore often prior to his becoming a film actor! I had no idea!

How could I forget the wrestlers, LOL?

We actually kind of like them, too--had a good laugh a couple of weeks ago when the guy (is he Bollo?  It sounds like a Ukrainian comedy team: Bollo & whatever the other one's name is) indignantly said to Hayden (or is it Erin, or Aaron, the actress with the bob), "I am NOT on steroids."   ;D

No, I'm pretty sure the contestants only see the shows when they air.

Btw, I don't think that it would be wise for Victoria to do what you said, because she would be giving up 1/2 million dollars.  That wouldn't be smart.

See the reason you state for liking adam and rebecca is the same reason I dislike them.  I like to see a team win that is deserving.  And even though I really dislike Jonathan and Victoria.  They do well.  And from the editing I'd say they are top 3.

Bette Davis:  The Letter; Juarez; Mr. Skeffington  (The older I get the more mannered and forced Bette becomes to me)

Joan Crawford: Just one  GRAND HOTEL...she's wonderful! But I must confess I'm not a big Crawford fan...just have never been able to warm up to her...I confess I've never seen Mildred Pierce all the way through in one sitting.

Gene Tierney:  LAURA, HEAVEN CAN WAIT, SON OF FURY, DRAGONWYCK, WHERE THE SIDEWALK ENDS; guilt pleasure: THE EGYPTIAN (Certainly one of the most beautiful women in film)

I know we're boring those who don't watch TAR.

But one last comment.

I know DR MBarnum loves the wrestlers.  And I suppose they are entertaining.  But they act so totally stupid.

It amazes me that they are still around.

The totally blew things. Yet miraculously a train came and saved their butts.  They were totally lucky to get that #1 card.

The fast forward is supposed to make you WAY AHEAD of the other teams.  Yet i'll bet when we see the times next week, that they are probably not as far ahead as they should be.

I think they need a miracle to win.

Mike Curtiz was certainly the most versatilve director in Hollywood.

What is a typical "assignment" (and what is it officially called, anyway--ablution??) that a Priest would give you after confession in terms of the number of Hail Marys and Rosaries you should say.  How would the Priest term it?

Confession anecdote (by Jove, I think this may be a new one):   My middle sister converted to Catholicism prior to her first marriage.  We all went back for her renaming ceremony or whatever it was (I was a kid, I barely remember it), and she had to make confession before her baptism.  She went into the confessional and emerged a moment later, at which point my Mother stated under her breath, "She can't possibly have confessed everything she's done in that little time!"

Are there any Catholics here who could give me a little technical expertise with this book I'm writing?

What is a typical "assignment" (and what is it officially called, anyway--ablution??) that a Priest would give you after confession in terms of the number of Hail Marys and Rosaries you should say.  How would the Priest term it?

A typical penance would usually consist of asking to say/pray a certain numbers of Our Fathers, Hail Marys, etc.  There is also a standard Act of Contrition which is said in the confessional before parting.  The priest may also ask/suggest/tell you to make amends, or at least think about making amends.  Basically, at least in my experience - albeit limited - with Confession, you were given something to do immediately after leaving the confessional - i.e. saying prayers - and then something to think about and do later - i.e. doing some sort of good deed, be nice(r) to your family, make an extra donation at mass, etc.  The penance had to be something that would take some time and effort and thought, and technically would "hurt" in a sense - a sacrifice.  If Jesus could hang on the cross...

My Confessional Anecdote - I had my First Confession when I was in the fourth grade.  I was enrolled in public school at the time, and was taking CCD classes on the Naval Base in Groton, CT.  -My father was stationed at the Coast Guard Academy at the time in nearby New London, CT.  We had a series of classes leading up to the First Confession.  The origin of the Sacrament itself.  The purpose of the Sacrament.  And the "mechanics" of the Sacrament.  After a few weeks, it finally was the day for the First Confession.  So, I'm walking around the chapel building and go in the door I saw everyone else going in.  When I walk in, there's the priest sitting there in a chair with an empty chair in front of him.  It was an Open Confession - meaning face to face!  Now, we had discussed the options in class, but I has just assumed that we would have the typical kneel behing the small screen type of confession.  I guess not.  I still remember being caught off guard and extremely nervous.  Well... I did it, and it wasn't too bad.  We prayed first.  I confessed my sins - and, yes, you can talk in general terms.  I was absolved of my sins and then given my penance by the priest.  Then I walked out of the room.  Whew!

-Apparently, others were caught off guard too.  The "closed" option was available, but there was a certain time slot for that, if I'm remembering correctly.  But what was really fun and funny, was a couple of us got together after we had confessed and compared penances!  Just like in the movies!  :D

Oh, and the other sacrament you refer to is Confirmation which is basically like becoming an adult in the Catholic church.  Lots of classes/education for this one too.  The only thing I did not like was the holy oil, chrism, that was placed on my forehead (anointed).  Boy, did that stuff make me itch!  But I couldn't touch it!  At least not in church.  -Oh, and for some not so random reason, I'm remembering I got some neat gifts from my parents and sponsors, and we had a nice lunch at a favorite Chinese restaurant.

...My how the minds works...

My favorite Joan is FLAMINGO ROAD. I think I read it's being readied for DVD release. Now, for camp value, I think TORCH SONG and FEMALE ON THE BEACH are miles ahead of everything, but I think her performance in FLAMINGO ROAD is earnest and spot-on (even if she's about 15 years too old for it.)

On Unsung Sondheim and Liz' recording, I kept thinking, perhaps we can fix it in the mix!  Oy!  You did something really great when we finished them both (besides not firing me):  you came up, gave me a hug, and told me to be sure to register for frequent flyer miles!  I knew I had some work for a while.

Oh, and for Bette Davis - I'd have to say NOW VOYAGER.  Which is, strangely enough, the one Bette Davis movie I've watched multiple times - well, maybe just three or four.  But that's three or more times than some others.

The soundtrack LP of LI'L ABNER has different orchestrations from the film, too.

Most fim musicals have different orchestrations.  They like to take advantage of huge Hollywod orchestras after that piddly 28-player Broadway sound!

I think you misunderstood the point I was making. The orchestra backing the singers during the movie sounds different from the commercially released film soundtrack album, at least to my ears. The orchestra on the soundtrack LP sounds like 100 pieces large, and while looking at the actual film, it sounds like about 10 pieces. "Put "Em Back" to me was especially shocking to compare.

I'm not talking about the Broadway album at all.

The Abner soundtrack is very strange - the LP orchestrations ARE different than the film orchestrations even though the vocals remain the same.  I don't think the movie orchestrations sound thin, though, although the VHS tape doesn't really present the sound very well.  If there's ever a DVD with a 5.1 mix, my guess is it will sound excellent.

DRMattH, I probably did!  It's been my experience that usually a "soundtrack" recording is the actual track of the film, and that it's usually a new orchestration for the film version.  I never owned the LI'L ABNER soundtrack so I've never compared the sound of the videocassette with the LP.

Last week, when I watched the Julie Andrews CINDERELLA on DVD, because the LP recording was done a week earlier, the mixes are different, and often the vocal assignments were changed.   I remember thinking as I watched the DVD, I didn't know that part of the Gavotte had dialogue over it.

In Kurt Ganzl's book of musical theatre on record, he comments that the OKLAHOMA! film orchestrations are by Russell Bennett but they don't sound like the originals.  Ive seen the scores; it's a whole new megillah.

I'm cookin' up some grub.  I got my HMV.au package today - the Australian pressing of the new Mary Poppins DVD - the only version that has a 5.1 mix of the original theatrical soundtrack.  The American only has the screwed up Enchanced Home Theater Mix and the 2.0.  I also got the Oz pressing of Nudie Musical - it's the same as the US but in Oz it's put out by Warner Home Vid, so I got it for the slightly different packaging and the logo.

So BK, would you ever contact Charles Wright (the writer of the "Writer's Block" review) and ask him?  (Write, the writer of Writer's ;D)  Is that ever done?

Evening all.  Sorry to post and run last night.  I had a hard time sleeping the night before.  To many things on my mind.

One of things being I didn’t know if I was going to have to pay that eight hundred and fifty dollar doctor bill.  I called the Humana thinking I was going to have real fight on my hands.  I was shocked beyond words when the guy pulled the record up and said, “Oh, that’s a mistake.  We should have paid that.  It will be corrected.  Would you like a reference number so you can call the doctor and let him know he call us and use that reference number to see the status of his payment?”

I just about fell off my chair!  I was ready to do battle.   I was ready to do my best imitation of a Xena war cry!  I was so relieved I could have kissed that guy.  Well, maybe not kiss him exactly but I was one satisfied customer when I hung up the phone.   ;)  (Ok, Dear Uncle, I know what your gonna say about that!)

Speaking of money, believe it or not, I found a bag of money on the street this morning on my way to work.  It was all change that came to two dollars and sixty-five cents. Now if I could only find a bag of PAPER money.   :-\

I liked the cyber tour of Benjamin’s world.  A suggestion, if I may?  Could a place be made on the site to put them so if people wanted to look at the places in the book they could go there and see them instead of hunting for them in a tread?

I also like the Chooster pictures.  The new HHW mascot!

Welcome to our newest DR,  Ozderek!  Tell us about yourself, please.   :)

After you finish your 1st draft do you print it out and make corrections or do you make corrections directly to the file?

H-i-n-k-y...that's what it is...it's h-i-n-k-y.

Actually, it has been common practice since movie soundtracks started appearing on LPs for the arrangements/orchestrations to differ a bit.

You used to be able to tell because they would say things like "recorded directly from the soundtrack," which was supposed to mean it's exactly like you heard it.  But more often than not, you'd get "original soundtrack recording" but it did NOT mean exactly as you heard it in the film...there were always...ALWAYS...differences.

H-i-n-k-y...that's what it seems like today...h-i-n-k-y.

Back then, though, they did it thinking most people would rather hear it in a form typical of song recordings for LPs.

Sigh.

Michael Shayne,  I am constantly printing out work copies of the manuscript as I go along and proofing them the old fashioned way.  I sit enough at a computer without doing that kind of minutia work there.  Like Panni, I like to have the actual hard copy in my hands and mark all over it.  This is work I can also do flat on my back in bed.  Also the wife proofs as well and she catches stuff that I ordinarily wouldn't.

I used to compose everything in longhand  and then transfer it to a computer; I still do much of my composing in longhand, especially dialogue heavy scenes, and then rewrite as I transfer it into the computer.  But the re-writing process is ongoing as I'm writing the script.  I'm constantly re-visiting scenes or the script up to where it is and fiddling with it.  At the end, I then print up the whole script, re-read it, and make final corrections and polishes.

BK-  I still use IE on my mac, although I also have Safari installed.  I'm a creature of habit, and I still like IE.  But if you're going to be putting bookmarks and such, probably best to just go over to Safari.  If you want to make it "bigger", click and drag the bottom righthand corner...that should do it, I think.  As far as making the actual text in the window bigger, there's another way to do that.

I have had a fairly lousy day...nothing horribly bad, just one little thing after another going wrong...I hate those kind of days.  When I get home I am going to clean my apartment, hit the gym for a bit, then spend a nice quiet evening in a hot bath.

I, too, always proof off a hard copy.

Pogue, Writer's Block in two months has outsold all three Kritzer books combined, so yes, I think it's doing okay.  In fact, this review today sent the amazon sales rank zooming up again - after New Year's we'd settled back down to a bit over 300,000, still not horrid considering there are over two million books in the sales rank.  Within two hours of the review hitting, we zoomed to 29,000.  Pretty good, I think.

Want to know what gets my goat?  Here is what gets my goat:  A little over two weeks ago, Panni mentioned Writer's Block to her agent, told him about the rave from Scarlet Street and the theatermania Christmas pick thing.  He was very intrigued.  He said he was going on vacation and it would be perfect timing for him to read it (Panni's agent is at the William Morris office, as is mine, but mine just won't deal with novels).  So, sent him a copy on a Tuesday via priority mail.  Shockingly, it hadn't arrived by Friday.  Panni called me and told me she thought it would be worth my while to messenger him another copy before he left the office that day, which was three hours away.  I didn't want to - I was annoyed that a priority envelope could possibly take longer than one day to get from Valley Village to Beverly Hills and I was also down to my last few books and orders were still coming in because of theatermania.   I was assured that he really wanted to read it and that it would really be a good thing.  I finally said okay, we found a rush messenger, it cost me fifty bucks.  The agent was back on Monday.  Monday wasn't a good time to ask him, I was told.  Tuesday went by, topic forgotten.  Today the agent was spoken to.  He didn't read it.  He didn't take it.  I doubt he even knows where it is.  He now has two copies of my book, unread.  I ask you, dear readers, is this right?  And when I get upset about it, I'm just treated like a little kid.

Matt H. thank you.

This morning Keith practically pushed me out of the house, despite my numerous excuses, to join my Wednesday hiking group.  They were so happy I made it and were all very teary eyed so I of course broke down.  It was very comforting.  Fortunately my first hike without Echo was not to one of her favorite spots, so it was okay and I’m glad I went.

Ann the photos from last night are hysterical.

I know I have mentioned how highly we think of our new vet but once again she has been more than kind and competent towards us.  Yesterday as I was cleaning up all of Echo’s carpets from the floor-about 30 in total of various sizes (they were down to keep her from slipping on the floors) I had an idea our wonderful vet could use them for her new practice, so I left a message on her cell phone asking if she would like them.  When she called back today and spoke to Keith he asked what the bill would be for her trip out here yesterday.  Nothing was her response.  The time and research she has done on our behalf so far is nothing compared to the fees we have received. With further inquiry he discovered her “Angel Fund” for charity veterinarian service is only  up to $25.  That is about to improve.

Since when did Wheel of Fortune become a drama?  Complete with "suspense" music?  I mean, just when I think it can't get any lower they go and surprise me.  Can't a game show just be a game show?  You know, a little music in and out of the commercial, but then STOP.

It just occured to me that if I do watch Alias tonight, it will be the first time I've ever seen an episode that was actually broadcast - I've only ever seen it on DVD.  I'm quite certain the commercials will drive me insane.

Have Lost on.  I'M Lost.  I know some here like this show, but I'm sorry, the direction by Jack Bender is terrible (he is also responsible for a handful of the only bad The Sopranos episodes, and a few of Alisas's as well.   But, I don't know - the Jennifer Garner clone, the guy with his ass crack showing - I enjoy Alias on some very superficial level, but Lost is just loud, shaky and annoying, at least this episode.

I am missing Lost because I'm still at work (my niece is taping it, so I'll watch her copy).  I'm about to leave and go to Circuit City to see if there is anything that I want to buy with the gift card that I got for Christmas.  The last time I went, the only thing of that I could think that I wanted was the 2-CD set of the soundtrack to "The Phantom of the Opera."  They didn't have it.  I couldn't find anything else (at that time) that I wanted.  Any CDs that I would want aren't the kind that they carry.  And if they do, I usually already have it.  I'll have to peruse their DVDs very carefully to see if anything pops out at me.  If it does, I hope it doesn't hurt!  Those popping DVDs have wicked aim! ;)

I finally got mu kitchen totally cleaned up. I had been stacking the DVDs that came in on the kitchen counter, and I had three towering stacks of them to find places for today. They are still unseen as yet, but now they are at least out of the kitchen.

The floor also got a thorough mopping, and I am as happy as I've been in awhile with having a clean house.

Of course, that also means COLLATERAL was put off for another day.

DR Jane, I'm glad you went hiking today. I was in your place a  year ago, and I know how difficult it is. How nice it is to have such a compassionate vet.

DR Danise, how is your mom lately?

Today we had a lovely day of sunshine. DH had today off, so we went for a walk at the preserve. Then he rented a small plane and took a short flight to celebrate the sunny day. More storms expected this week.

And the theater was packed...they had to open up the first balcony (there are 3 in the theater), which is where I and my buddy Mark sat. Mark actually enjoyed the movie, too...he was grousing because it was made in 1934.

Do any Mac/AOL users have this incessant AOL freezing problem?  It happened about three times tonight - all when I was using shuffle play on iTunes, but I can't imagine that should have anything to do with it.

From what some of my friends have told me - friends that use Macs - AOL for Mac has always been a bit unstable since it was originally configured for PC/Windows.  It was a few years before a Mac version came out after the initial PC release.

iTunes may be causing some momentary conflict with the audio functions of AOL - playing IM sounds, etc. - so...  However, I believe there's a way to customize your memory settings in order to minimize such occurences.

-I remember working on a Mac for a few months a few years ago, and there was a program called "Conflict Catcher".  And that's what it did.  It allowed the user to have certain start-up modes depending upon what software you were mainly going to use that session.  At the time, it was adviced not to run Mac/AOL at the same time as any other video/audio program... Maybe there's still some residual "mess" from that OS version.  ???

Well... Just remember a 30 sitcom is actually only 22 minutes of sitcom and 8 minutes of commercials.  So, a commercial every eight minutes...

And then there's radio... Some stations are formatted to run commercials in 10 minute(!) blocks every 25-30 minutes.  I'm not sure if that's really "better" than running them after two to three songs.

-Actually, it would be neat if TV networks did that.  Show the whole sitcom, then give the viewer a nice break to go to the bathroom, make a phone call, get something to eat, etc.  -Although, I'm guessing the advertisers would not be too happy with that arrangement.

Back from Finding Neverland.  It gets my vote for everything this year.  Blubbed like a baby through vast stretches of it.  Depp is the best actor working today.

BK, I could have told you the agent wouldn't readthe book; will probably never read it.  The vast majority of agents...despite their reps...only go for the easy score.  Anything that takes energy, imagination, or thinking outside the norm rarely happens.  In my thirty-odd years, I have found most agents function as bulletin boards...it is one's own individual drive and talent that accomplishes things.  They love you when you're hot; then their job is easy...I'm still looking for these agents you hear people thank on awards shows, "My dear friend and agent who has been with me for thirty-five years through thick and thin."  Who are these guys?

OH!  A later in the day question for Ask BK Day...  On the way into the show tonight, I was talking with my college choral prof and we wondered...

Do you think it would be possible for some of the "distinct" voices of the Golden Age - or even slightly before that and after that - to make it in today's Broadway climate?  I'm thinking along the lines of Lotte Lenya, Glynnis Johns, Hermione Gingold, etc.  -And I'm sure there are some men who come under this category.

They most definitely did not have the most beautiful voices - Lenya's voice has always puzzled me, for lack of a better turn of phrase - but they had good careers, and were identified as musical theatre voices.  Has the day and age for true character voices come and gone?

Thinking back along my own experience, especially in auditions, most of the singers I play for are "singers".  And any type of character-voice was something that the singer "added" rather than walked into the room with naturally.

Any thoughts?  -And I know this also relates to the whole "They don't write (produce) them like they used to" problem...

Yes, I think they'd succeed because they have what most of these "newcomers" lack - real personality and character.  They were all total originals, which you can't say about almost anyone working today.

Well, then, continuing on...

Do you think today's "typical" audience is willing to accept, to go see, to buy tickets to someone who doesn't have that "friendly" a vocal quality?  With today's emphasis on belting, high notes, how long a note is held...

Agent addenda:  Over the years, before I pretty much stopped altogether, reading friends' scripts and friends of friends' scripts,  I also had the caveat, "I'm critiquing your script.  Don't think to use me as a conduit to my agents.  I won't asked them to read it.  I broke this rule only once and did so on my own initiative, not at the request of the scriptwriter who knew nothing about until after the fact.  I put my rep and credibility on the line because it was the only script I ever read that I thought an agent should actually see...It was very good...So I called my agent and asked if he would read it.   He was a top agent at a top agency. He said,  "Well, if a writer of your caliber thinks that highly of it, I should read it."  I didn't have to worry about my credibility.  The agent never read the damned thing.  Never heard about it again.  It was his loss.  It's still a great script.  But I should have known...they're not looking for new talent, they're only looking for HOT new talent that's an easy sell.
