Well, this is cool...mostly.  The movie Loving Vincent (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076BCD74H/) is finally available for preorder.  Sadly, it's only available on DVD...at least right now on Amazon.  Having seen hi-def clips on YouTube, this seems like the kind of movie that screams for a Blu-ray release.

I see my doctor for my 3-month exam, so this morning I have lab work.  I will leave very shortly.  Once that's finished, I'll walk down to the pharmacy and pick up my eye drops, then head home.  I want to block access to the bookshelves today and finish the medley for London.

I spent thirty minutes with Thatch this morning in the bathroom.  I took him out of his carrier, fed him, let him run around the bathroom, stretch and use the litter box.  He's much more fastidious than Annabelle about covering his waste than she is.  When I come home, I'll put Annabelle in her carrier, and leave them in the middle of the apartment next to each other for a couple of hours.

So, it seems we are to get a little, um, "weather" that wasn't in any damned forecast I looked at yesterday.  I'm hoping we'll be spared the ... you-know-what part of the proceedings.  I have a few errands to run, and mainly, I'm many days behind on leaf clearing and other such things.  I can condense the errand activity into something more manageable, but once it starts raining a little bit, the outdoors work is out.

Biggest and most difficult move?

I don't know.  It seems like all of my earlier-in-life moves were the kind that could be accomplished in a few car trips.  This is prior to the years of having my own furniture, etc.  In later years, I've always managed to attract either friends who could help in some form or other, and nothing particularly nightmarish comes to mind.  Then I had a few work related cross-country moves that were paid for and executed by the big moving companies, so as huge an undertaking as those were, I can't say they were personally difficult.  (It's really great, in fact, to have all of the difficult stuff accomplished by a staff of people you're not even having to pay for.  Oh yes indeed it is.)

Okay, I'll pick this one:  The move from my first place in Danbury (a very decent two-story townhouse type of apartment) to a rented house a few miles away had to be largely accomplished by me, and in somewhat of a rush situation because the apartment had just been sold quicker than expected.  I had local guys move the furniture and a lot of large items, but I remember a hectic night from Hell when I was schlepping several carloads of the last stuff over there myself, and I thought it would never end.  Nothing noteworthy about it, just that it was a time when I could have used a lot of help and had completely failed to plan for it.

When this is finished, I will put Annabelle, who's currently hiding from the vacuum, in her carrier, and then bring Thatch in his out into the living space.

While she cannot help me orchestrate or climb all over me while I do, I'm writing checks and finishing this medley!

Latest harassment development, with a new permutation:

Actress Bijou Phillips has apologized (and it really seems like a sincere apology) for her abusive and apparently homophobic treatment of her co-star Daniel Franzese, which occurred when she was either 19 or 20.

I have just left a terse voicemail for the manager of the business office at Mom's retirement community, wondering what it takes to get someone from there to return a phone call.  I've been trying, off and on, to reach them since August 22.  They have totally alienated a couple (Richard and me) who are part of their target market, baby boomers.  I had no qualms with the care Mom received, but their business office instills NO confidence and that's a deal-breaker.

Rather than pursuing Thatch, as is her want, Annabelle decide to help me pay bills.  As soon as I opened the drawer for stamps and return labels, she jumped into the shelf and into the recesses of the chest.  I had to remove the drawers to release her.

Moving is very difficult, especially moving cross country.  At least all of the company moves hired packers for us, and we were able to continue doing so with our last two moves.  Of course hiring has its own issues, such as missing items and things crammed into boxes that should have been done with more care.

This move wasn't as large as most of our cross country moves.  To begin with we didn't have children, pets, only 1 car, and we got rid of most of our books.  We did major downsizing first.

Most moves have had issues.  This move we were very concerned they would not show up as promised, something that has happened twice.  At least they showed but late in the day instead of the morning.

All but the last two moves for for Keith's work, which meant prior to the move he was in one state while I was in another.  That was always very difficult.

TOD:
Most of our moves took place when I in grade school or junior high, so I mostly sat at our Grandparents while the grown ups did the work.   A lot of stuff.....kid's stuff.....was always left when we moved....so that was a drawback.

When we moved to this house in 1971....house built in 1959, we are the second owners....my brother with whom I lived had just gotten married.....so I was combining my household with my family's and that was a pretty horrifying and LONG and heavy move.....it took a few days.  Family and friends helped....but it was tortuous.
Title: Re: THE BIG MOVE PART ONE
Post by: Jrand73 on November 13, 2017, 10:48:11 AM
When my sister and I went to WalMart and Dollar Tree this morning, we heard lots of sirens.  We were on the way home and saw a LOT of black smoke billowing up from Heartland Estates....and huge tract of McMansions.....

So of course, we drove over there to see if we could help....although if we were asked we could say we had ice cream in the car....BUT one house was blazing....people were running all around....there were five fire trucks fighting the blaze.  People on the next street were evacuating their own homes.  We saw some folks pushing folks in wheel chairs toward cars, and other folks were carrying out pets in cages and carriers.

The news reports that it was natural gas explosion.....

We got out of there after rubber necking a bit.  That may be an Indiana thing - but if something is happening, we need to go look.

A small sampling of our first and worst move.

I was alone with an almost 2 year old and 2 cats while Keith was driving the dogs to New Jersey.

Only 2 packers were sent to pack us in one day.  They worked until 4:00 in the morning.

Next day the driver was upset because the salesman had lied to us regarding what he could put on the truck as well as our expected delivery date.

The driver was so fed up he quit half way through the drive without telling anyone where he left the moving truck.

For over two weeks we had no idea where the trucks was and if everything was lost to us.  They had my car and I could not go anywhere doing the day.

Our realtor gave us blankets and pillows, a neighbor lent us a tv and borrowed some toys for Bryan.  Most of the neighbors didn't know we had moved in not having seen a moving truck or we might have had additional help, such as someone getting me diapers when I ran out of them (I used cloth & they were on the truck).
Title: Re: THE BIG MOVE PART ONE
Post by: Jane on November 13, 2017, 10:51:54 AM

Imagine a day with no diapers.  That was the day I called the company and said they needed to rent me a car.  I was told I did not qualify because my husband had a car.  After arguing it was a company car and used to take him to work.  The man still refused to get me a car.  When I had to speak to someone higher up he responded "Only God is higher than I am".  That is when I went ballistic.

Keith called the company and asked to speak to God.  That night we picked up a rental for me, after he stopped for diapers on the way home.

Shortly after that they found the truck and, while Keith was out of town, delivered our belongings.  The movers were not happy about all of our boxes of books which might be why they basically dumped the furniture, including the beds without putting them back together.  One couch was left on its side.

A woman at the local office was very nice and did what she could.  Without waiting for authorization she sent someone to put the beds together and repair Bryan's broken rocking horse, minor stuff and they fired her for it.

I know.  I always hoped she found a job in a better place.

Former DR Penny recently went through something like this.  She finally received her belongings but there was a lot of damage.  Social media probably helped her some, mostly she kept reading about others in the same situation from the moving company.  Needless to say United Moving received a very poor review from her.  We never had the satisfaction of doing the same with Mayflower.

Every long distance move takes us back to the first one.

The movers in our first Michigan stay did not show on delivery day.  Thanks goodness they arrived the next day.  They said their truck broke down but someone let it slip they were just out drinking and couldn't drive the next day.

Easiest move was probably Connecticut back to Michigan.

I take that back.  Better than that one was the move from New Jersey to Massachusetts.

I've been watching (reading) BK's move with interest. With a local move I think it's best to do it in pieces, if you can. I have a low opinion of professional movers and think that hiring people you know to do it makes sense. Having access to both houses for a few days overlap is SUCH a help!

My biggest move--San Diego, CA to Arlington, VA--was also one of my easiest. My employer paid for it, and the wife of one of my co-workers was one of the coordinators for the moving company. They did a very good job. They repeatedly told me they'd arrive on time, of course, and then didn't, but I rather expected that. I'd only reserved a few days at a hotel and had already started my new job. My apartment was ready, though empty. I purchased pillows and a comforter, towels and such, and "roughed" it. It wasn't a problem.

That moving company was United, but I believe that under the United banner are many smaller companies, locally owned.

Monday morning greetings!  The birthday boy (Richard) and I are going to see Murder on the Orient Express this afternoon and then to one of his burger joints for an early dinner.  We had a nice birthday breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, and pineapple/cherry cobbler.

Happy birthday wishes to the birthday boy!

Thank you, DR ChasSmith!  Remember our celebration 4 years ago at Artie's?

YES!, I remember it very well.  It was my first time in Artie's, my first time to meet DR & DH Ginny and Richard, and my first time to meet DR vixmom.  DRs Ben and FJL were there, and I think Jose showed up at some point, as is his wont.  It was quite cold and windy that night.  I'd brought down some Stew Leonard's pumpkin raisin cookies which I believe DRs Elmore and Ben shared.  The pastrami and the company were wonderful.  I walked with DR Elmore back to his front door, my first time to see which building was his.  Good lord, now that seems like a century ago!  :)

Oh my.  I wonder if that was a local situation, or national.

I'll be checking in on Trader Joe's at least twice in the coming week.  We buy our Thanksgiving turkeys there now, and quite a few of the accoutrements.  That big shopping trip will be over the weekend.  I also want to stock up on several bottles of their Triple Ginger Brew and a few other seasonal things.

Not a series.  The move following the worst move was probably the best.  Next one ok, one after that with the drunks and there was a bit of damage.  There was damage on this move to.

The best move was done by a family crew.  It was only from Oakland, NJ to Acton, MA under 4 hours.  This nice family of men took the truck and stopped part way to sleep at the family home until it was time to deliver our truck.  Yes, they were on time and I believe everything arrived in good condition and nothing was missing.

And here's tonight's drama.  Around 8:00 I noticed that Thatch's dinner which I'd left at the bookshelf entry was untouched.  Since he gobbles food, this concerned me, so I spent some time trying to find him under the shelves.  What I did find horrified me: a lot of boric acid and roach and bedbug poison that had been sitting under those shelves since the bedbug infestation of 2008.  All I could think is, if this hasn't already killed him, it will soon.  So, Annabelle and I had our ice cream ad I decided I'd better find him.
Title: Re: THE BIG MOVE PART ONE
Post by: elmore3003 on November 13, 2017, 07:04:40 PM
And I did.  He had moved down to another bookshelf after his afternoon hissing and spitting with Annabelle.  But . . . I knew the magic power of the Purina Kitty Party Mix, and I lured him out with a handful.  When I tried to grab him before he could escape back under the shelf, he clawed the shit out of my hand, drawing a lot of blood in three wounds and he escaped my clutches.  But he ran into the room and not back under the shel, so as soon as I took care of my hand, Annabelle ad I went kitty hunting.

She found him trying to get back under the shelf where he had been in last weekend, but I had blocked the entry.  Annabelle jumped him and they actually fought.  Claws were bared, they rolled around, they screamed at each other, fur flew, and I thought, this has been coming so maybe this will break the ice.  When they separated after the third round I carried Annabelle off, and approached Thatch, speaking very softly and offering him more party mix.  When I got my hands on him, I carried him to the carrier, set him inside, and took the carrier back to the bathroom.  He was covered in the poison and little clouds of dust were flying from him.

In the bathroom, I fed him as I filled the bathtub with warm water and pulled a big fuzzy towel from the rack.  He's going to start avoiding my touch because when I picked him up this time, I tossed him into the bathtub and sloshed him around in the water to get the poison off his fur.  Then I wrapped him in the towel and held him while I rubbed him down.  I'm hoping the shit under the shelf hasn't dome any damage, so I'll keep an eye on him tonight.  Tomorrow I will seriously vacuum under those shelves, just in case.

Annabelle has found the large paper bag from the Friday Chinese food delivery.  She's having fun.  Thatch is still damp but he's lying on a little rug of heavy knitted yarn in his carrier in a very warm bathroom.  He was purring while I petted him, so I guess he's forgiven me.  I cannot wait for official cat photographer ChasSmith to take some photos.

The move from the townhouse in Calabasas to the house I live in now. Under the terms of the escrow, I was supposed to move out on a Saturday so the new owner could move in on Sunday. Really?? I'm supposed to move in one day? Thank goodness the new owner had a job that required him to travel a lot, and he wasn't going to be around to move in on Sunday anyway. It took Mark and I a full week to move. There's absolutely no way we could have done it in one day.
