Title: ONLY THE UPSIDE
Post by: bk on January 10, 2005, 12:04:34 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know the upside of the notes, there is no downside of the notes, so now it is time for you to post until the cows come home.

Someone tell this fershluganah rain to STOP.  I've checked the walls, but they seem fine to me.  The wall where the tiny leak is may have to be looked at, but that's about it as far as I can tell anyway.

Good morning, fellow dear readers.

I cannot sleep, because I took a decongenstant for my headache. So I am watching a shopping channel, hoping the unceasing chatter will bore me to sleep. A woman spent an hour gushing over painful-looking shoes, and now she is cooking and gushing over cookware. It is very entertaining.

BK, I called a week ago to get a bid on having roof work done. I was told it would be a week before anyone called me back for an appointment to come take a look.

STOP, RAIN! IT IS I, LA JOLIE FEMME, WHO COMMAND YOU!! LET THERE BE NO MORE WATER! AT ALL! I'M NOT KIDDING! I"M GONNA TELL MOM! YOU"LL GET IN TROUBLE! etc. ad infinitum.  It only goes to show, BK that the answer to "who'll stop the rain?" is not me!

Sorry about the 3 spots on the rug. Doncha just HATE 3 spots on the rug? Last time I had 3 spots on the rug the cat had eaten my baby's breath...the flower, not the infant  death.

I haven't made it to bed yet. Think I'll sleep in the guest room tonight.
I think Ahnold would be a good Kleine Abner.
And Maria could play Daisy Mae.
G'night. Again.

Goodnight.

Maybe not.  As soon as I'd get to Mammy Yokum we'd have someone unhappy.

Nah! She'd be Daisy or no one.

That reminds me, my poor cat needs his food.  The pup needs a walk on the wet side. The brave and handsome husband seems to want to turn in.

Something for which I wish I had a picture:

Lately, Fletcher, the Dalmatian, has been insisting on der Brucer taking him for a walk.  The danged dog will actually get his leash and bring it over to der B, throwing it down at der B's feet.  So once a day der B gets his coat on and enleashes Fletcher.

There's a catch, of course.  Fletcher weighs about half what der B weighs, and is a heckofa lot stronger.  So try to imagine der B being pulled along at the start of the walk, as Fletcher goes on his initial run!

They do settle down after a bit, with Fletcher prancing happily as der B catches his breath.  But they are a sight to see!

 :D

Just dropping in to say hello this early morning. Our rain from Saturday has stopped. We had an impromptu get together with my English cousin on Saturday. We were expecting other friends to come over around 5pm and the buzzer rang about 4:45. "Oh, they're early" we said, so we pressed the buzzer and up the stairs comes Ray. Our other friends arrived about a half hour later and a grand time was had by all. We chatted and laughed and ate until almost 10pm. Then yesterday we had another friend drop by and we played Initials, a game I used to play in college. You put the alphabet (A-Z) down one side of a piece of paper, then find a random sentence which you write next to the alphabet. You then use the corresponding two letters to come up with famous people. You have 15 minutes to do this. There is scoring involved. It's actually more fun than I've made it sound but I'm tired from my weekend activities and I must get back to work.

Kerry, love the picture of you, Lyn and Sugar!

Ben,

It's been ages since I played Initials, and your post brought back some nice memories. I regularly played with Lynne, a friend from England, and it was interesting comparing our selections. Lynne's husband sometimes joined us. As you explained, there are two columns: one using the first 26 letters of a random quotation; the other, alongside the first, using the letters of the alphabet. Lynne's husband, not a great speller, would copy the quotation off my paper, which was fine. But then he'd copy the letters-of-the-alphabet column, too. Hello?

(Who do you use for BE? Bob Eubanks was my regular choice.)

DR Ben, a friend of mine actually has a board game called Initials that I love playing.  Six sets of initials are somehow selected through throws of dice and then six category cards are drawn (dictating such professions as "Author", "Scientist", "Movie Star", etc.)  The object is to find names that match a pair of initials to each category against a time limit.  It's on the corny side, but a lot of fun.

I've used Britt Ekland and Billy Eckstine for BE. When I use Britt Ekland, I usually have to explain who she is and provide evidence of her "celebrity" status but then if no one else has gotten a BE, I get 15 points!

I kept getting bounced off HHW all weekend, probably my stupid dial up service, but everytime I tried to refresh, I would be knocked back to opening page of AOL. >:(

I did tried to upload a photo for my profile but was told it was too big and I could not figure out how to resize it.

Last week some kind DR offered to allow me to email directly to them and said he/she would resize it for me, but my poor befuddled brain has forgotten who it was who made the kind offer. ???

If you are still so inclined, please let me know.

I must now wend my way back to catch up on the weekend's posts...

I only realized after reading today's posts that you were looking for  "bad casting" but got Brendan Fraser stuck in my mind for Lil Abner after reading the notes and now I can't think of anyone else

Of course there are worse images one could get stuck in one's mind so I think I will just enjoy this one for a few moments

Too darn hot,

DR vixmom, I'm going the same route with Fraser.  He fits in well with my Li'l Abner for the MTV generation:

Li'l Abner -- Brendan Fraser
Daisy Mae -- Jessica Simpson
Marryin' Sam -- Jason Alexander
Mammy Yokum -- Cloris Leachman
Pappy Yokum -- Verne Troyer
Stupefyin' Jones -- Nicolette Sheridan
Moonbeam McSwine – Anna Nicole Smith
Earthquake McGoon – Joe Black
Appassionata Von Climax – J-Lo

DR Dan (the Man): My Panasonic DVR had no trouble playing DR MBarnum's DVD+R disc he sent me. DVD-R and DVD+R are the two most commonly used recording formats, and most of these recorders play back those formats even if they only record one or the other. I've never tried a DVD-RW or DVD+RW in it, but I suspect it wouldn't play those back. As you saw, it plays/records DVD-RAM which is much more recordable (can be erased tens of thousands of times whereas the DVD-RW can only be erased about 1,000 times).

You're never going to find one of these affordable level machines that can play back everything, but -R and +R are the formats your friends will probably use anyway.

Well I made the jaunt back up to school yesterday to see tree limbs strewn everywhere and trees down, luckily there was no damage done to the buildings at the church/home environment, but as part of my living there is taking care of the grounds, me and one of my roomates have a big, big job ahead of us! We have power and heat, but our cable wire is lying beneath several limbs which means no television and no internet! :o I am at the library right now, but maybe I can get some pictures up  later today or tomorrow. Ball State has wireless internet for students in all the academic buildings so I may lug my beast of a laptop with me to class later today or tomorrow and share some pictures between classes. Another bit of news is the fraternity next to us has been closed down and our church is looking at buying the property. They are considering making it similar to a dormitory for Catholic students (well they would let anyone stay there most likely) but it's a really exciting prospect.

Many many thanks to DRelmore for his package. (I believe this at least the 6th thank you now.) My roomates were all quite curious as to what was in the box when they got back Saturday and came running down to see what the matter was when they heard my squeals of delight upon opening the package. :) They are keeping me very entertained!

I've got a good bit of TV recorded to the DVR that needs to be watched and cleared off, so I most likely won't get to any DVDs today.

I think the next one will be BUTLEY from the AFT series. I haven't seen it since seeing it at the movies all those years ago (and I mean decades ago).

Thanks, DR Matt.  I really need to do some more research on these recorder/players and consider all the options before I go shopping again.

I reccomended a "Bring Your Chainsaw to Church" day next Saturday though I don't think they are going to go for it. (Interesting thought on the visiting dogs rule, though I suppose they wouldn't allow them actually inside in case someone was highly allergic. I'd fight for the right to visit though!) First of all, great casting ideas for our production.  I think the one that would have the best chance of getting us to Broadway is elmore's.  Check it out.

I think it rained lightly the entire night.  However at six-thirty this morning we were again pummeled by the rain.  From what I can tell, the moisture on the carpet in the bedroom has not gotten worse, nor has the leak, so that's good.  It's calmed down again and if it can just stay calm like during the late-night hours then I think whatever is happening under the house will drain itself before anything worse happens.

I think it's safe to say that we have not seen the likes of this rainfall since I was a young sprig of a twig of a lad of a youth.

For those feeling alone and cast off by the weather:

Quote
SHIPWRECKED

Ed finally decides to take a vacation. He books himself on a Caribbean cruiseand proceeds to have the time of his life -- until the boat sank.

He found himself swept up on the shore of an island with no other people, no supplies..Nothing. Only bananas and coconuts.

After about four months, he is lying on the beach one day when the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen rows up to him.

In disbelief, he asks her, "Where did you come from? How did you get here?"

"I rowed from the other side of the island," she says. "I landed here when my cruise ship sank."

"Amazing," he says. "You were really lucky to have a rowboat wash up with you."

"Oh, this?" replies the woman. "I made the rowboat out of raw material found on the island. The oars were whittled from gum tree branches; I wove the bottom from palm branches; and the sides and stern came from a Eucalyptus tree."

"But-but, that's impossible," stutters Ed. "You had no tools or hardware. How did you manage?"

"Oh, that was no problem," replies the woman. "On the south side of the island, there is a very unusual strata of alluvial rock exposed. I found if I fired it to a certain temperature in my kiln, it melted into forgeable ductile iron. I used that for tools and used the tools to make the  hardware."

Ed is stunned. "Let's row over to my place," she says. After a few minutes of rowing, she docks the boat at a small wharf. As Ed looks onto shore, he nearly falls out of the boat.

Before him is a stone walk leading to an exquisite bungalow painted in blue and white.

While the woman ties up the rowboat with an expertly woven hemp rope, he could only stare ahead, dumb struck.

As they walk into the house, she says casually, "It's not much, but I call it home.

Sit down please; would you like to have a drink?"

"No, no thank you," he says, still dazed. "Can't take any more coconut juice."

"It's not coconut juice," the woman replies. "I have a still. How about a Pina Colada?"

Trying to hide his continued amazement, he accepts, and they sit down on her couch to talk.

After they have exchanged their stories, the woman announces, "I'm going to slip into something more comfortable. Would you like to take a shower and shave?

There is a razor upstairs in the cabinet in the bathroom."

No longer questioning anything, Ed goes into the bathroom. There, in the cabinet, is a razor made from a bone handle. Two shells honed to a hollow ground edge are fastened on to its end inside of a swivel mechanism. "WOW! This woman is amazing,"he muses,"What next?"

When he returns, she greets him wearing 'nothing but vines' strategically positioned, and smelling faintly of gardenias.

She beckons for him to sit down next to her. "Tell me," she begins suggestively, slithering closer to him, "We've been out here for a really long time.

You've been lonely. There's something I'm sure you really feel like doing right now, something

you've been longing for all these months. You know..." She stares into his eyes.

He can't believe what he's hearing: "You mean .", he swallows excitedly;
"I can check my e-mail from here?!"

JMK, the house was in Seattle, but the builders were indeed from Oregon. My nephew works for that company and he, and other employees (and spouses) were shipped up north to participate in the show. Alas, John was swallowed up by the crowd and his face didn't get in front of the camera, it appears.

Not Bree's hubby.  Not so far as anything has happened yet.  He had a fling with a dominatrix, but it's purely heterosexual in tone.  Which suits me to a tee...it's high time hetero behavioral fetishes were freed from the hint of having homosexual undertones.

For our water-logged, moisture-drenched, dew-laden, aqua-sodden LA friends, I recommend a movie festival with "Chinatown" as the main feature to ponder and pontificate upon.

Just exactly WHAT has LA done to take advantage of times like these to trap the water and use it to the benefit of all....or, as I suspect, have they just contented themselves to let it all drain away?

Is the LA River overflowing yet?  I'd love to see a picture of it with "something" flowing in it.

At the very least, one should watch "The Rains Came," or, if you've a tape off the Fox Movie Channel, "The Rains of Ranchipur."

Another storm is moving upon us in California...and it's certain to be a bad one from the Bay Area to San Diego...and it's moving in tonight, last I heard.  If I were a certain renter, I think I'd go out and buy a tarp and affix it to a certain portion of my roof (with the help of local friends, of course) using a staple gun to counter it being ripped up by gusting winds.

That or move into the Beverly Hills Hotel when he starts leaving footprints in the san...er...um...carpet!

You all realize that some of these versions of L'il Abner MIGHT just be made.  Of course that might not be so bad if we keep the wet underpants/Brendan Fraser thing.

The 2 different roofers we called did call back and inspected the roof and gave us bids.  I really don't want to think about it.

Ah yes, the initials game.  A bunch of us used to get together and play that and others.   I used to have my stash of no-fail repeats for the hard combinations.  One of the games similar to that related to songs, and for one fo the diffficult ones, I would always bail myself out with "See You in C-U-B-A" (one of Irving Berlin's lesser known (and deservedly so) ditties.

From  HyperboleRUs (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,143822,00.html):

Quote
Activists in New Paltz, N.Y., are calling for a boycott of a local movie theater because its owner ran a radio advertisement critical of filmmaker Michael Moore and praising the values associated with John Wayne, Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Stewart, reports the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Steve Greenfield co-chairs a group that launched the boycott. He and his brethren have been passing out fliers reading, "Don't Sponsor Hate: This Theater is Under Boycott" outside the cinemas.

The group called the ad on local radio stations "blatantly racist."

"... It is especially offensive that the theaters' management recalls John Wayne movies as the paragon of 'family film fare,'" it said in a press release.

"John Wayne starred in over 100 of the most violent films ever made, including dozens in which Native Americans and Mexicans were portrayed as dangerous savages created specifically for remorseless sport hunting by white settlers and armies."

And then this:

Quote
'Hate Speech'

Defendants in court in Denver charged with unlawfully disrupting a Columbus Day parade are trying to justify their actions by calling the parade a form of "hate speech," reports the Rocky Mountain News.

Some 230 people are charged with loitering and failure to obey lawful orders for trying to block the city's annual October parade.

Some of the defendants claim their actions were necessary because the parade is a form of ethnic intimidation. They object to celebrating Columbus, whom they condemn as a slave trader responsible for genocide in the deaths of up to 10 million American Indians.

They decried as racists a group of teenage girls on top of one float who threw candy at the protesters in an "aggressive manner."

Gives new meaning to "Death By Chocolate"

Good Morning!  Well... er.. Afternoon!

I did get up around 10:00, but I went back to bed, and next thing I knew it was 12:30!

:)

And for today's breakfast, I had... Steak and salad!  My father had fired up the grill to cook up some lunch for himself which turned out to be breakfast/brunch for me.  A nice T-Bone.  -Although, I only had one side of the T - I can't remember the correct term for that now.  Sorry...  In any case, it was good.

My throat is still feeling a little funny, but it felt better after eating and drinking some more water.  Just needed to rehydrate after my slumber.

Strangely enough, last night I was chatting with a friend of mine who happens to be a doctor.  He was lamenting that his office has been crazy-buzy the past few weeks with people coming in with the usual mid-winter ailments.  I told him that I was dealing with something in my throat too right now, and he told me that a lot of "that stuff" has been going around lately.  Even he was having some issues.  His left tonsil has also been inflamed the past days!?!?!?!  I kept asking if he was joking, but he assured me he wasn't.  And then when I told him that that's exactly what I have been dealing with the past few days myself...

After more chatting, he assured me that we both have is actually more normal and common than I thought.  It's usually a sign of a small, low-level viral infection.  And it's not contagious.  Usually just best to let it pass and run it's course, rather than possibly being (over-)prescribed some anti-biotics for it.  However, he did advise that if it lasts for more than a week and/or I start running a high fever that I should go see a doctor.  But...

Since I stayed up here in Fairfax this Monday instead of heading back to Richmond, we made plans to get together for dinner tonight - we haven't seen each other in person in a while.  And he even offered to check out my throat for me too!  "Doctor!  Doctor!"

Our street is blocked off.  Half the hillside up about a half a block up from our house has slid into the road.

Mother, give me the sun...the sun...the sun...(an Ibsen reference)

Ah, GHOSTS...  That was the first play I ever saw at the Kennedy Center!  It was in the Eisenhower Theatre.  And I think I still have the poster for the production somewhere - unless my parents ditched it "accidentally" in one of our many moves.

It starred Liv Ulmann and John Neville.  With a very talented relative newcomer playing Oswald - Kevin Spacey!

Jose (and possibly others):  I, too, had a sore throat issue while I was home during Christmas.  I couldn't really pinpoint an exact cause...there was no noticeable post-nasal dripping going on, and I wasn't particularly congested, so I was only treating the soreness topically, even though a pharmacist told me I needed a strong decongestant.

I finally (after 6 days of sore throat) saw a doctor who tested me for strep...I was free of any need for antibiotics, but he gave me a 9-day supply of Allegra-D and told me to take one tablet twice a day.

Within two days, the sore throat went away, but I continued with the decongestant until I had taken it all.  It really helped even though I never once felt "congested."

OH! OH! OH!

I meant to post this over the "weekend" when DR Françoic was/is around... regarding bad hotel guests...

In the Washington Post Magazine's "Under the Beltway" column, there was a story about a McLean, VA man who had checked into a hotel in Binghamton, NY.  After he checked out, the staff found many tubs of Vaseline in his trash can.  As for the Vaseline itself...  He had smeared the Vaseline over every single square inch of the room - including the ceiling and windows!  And the coup de resistance was the imprint of his butt-cheeks that he left on the Vaseline-covered mirrored walls!

Mon Dieu!

Sound advice insmuch as anti-biotics have NO effect on viral infections (Colds, Flu, AIDS).

vixmom, yes, we're safe in our immediate positon.  The grades on my house and my neighbours across the street are good and they have excellent ground-cover.  We're on bedrock here.  In the big earthquake in '94, the only thing that happened was pictures went askew on the wall...meanwhile, that half block up the hill where there are houses on stilts and perched on cliffsides, people had glass breaking and chimneys falling.

I did notice a huge pine tree in Griffith Park along Los Feliz Blvd. five minutes away had been uprooted.  Looked like it just pulled up out of the ground...didn't look like lightning had struck it or anything.

I have to be careful when I take decongestants lately. They really seem to do a number on my system - my blood pressure in particular.  So much so, that I actually "feel" my blood pressure getting elevated.  -However, to be fair to decongestants, one of their more common side effects is an elevation of one's blood pressure, so...

And I totally understand about having to take a decongestant and not feeling congested.  That's par for the course for me.  My sinuses will fill-up, but they won't drip - rather they drip very, very, very slowly.  A doctor I saw once said there was an actual medical term for it: insidious post-nasal drip.  Now whether he was telling the truth or joking about that being an official medical term, it's the perfect description.  It's just "slow" enough to irritate the throat, cause some coughing, but not "fast" enough to feel like an all and out cold or sinus infection.  And the sinus build-up is more like a "fill-up" since there's no really sinus pressure evident.

The "wonders" of the human body.

The squirrel in our yard has decided the wreath on our front window is the perfect place for sitting and having a meal.  We keep hearing this scratching sound  on the window pane and then there he is again , sitting in the middle of the wreath munching away,  Yesterday he had half a bagel.  It was raining all weekend, and DH gets home too late to deal with the wreath, so Fluffy  has another week to enjoy his odd perch before it disappears!

I know everyone laughs about the LA River, or at least anyone who has ever seen it.  Let's face it, a "river" that doesn't have any water in it, and is paved over with concrete?  Remember the drag-racing scene in Grease where Olivia Newton Bland watched the boys race their cars along that paved riverbed?  Or Ahnold rescuing Edward Furlong the first time from the truckdriving Robert Patrick early in Terminator 2, and then RP just calmly walks out of the fire all silvery and morphy?  That's the LA River.

But it's history is more serious than that.  It was during a series of rains over several years, just like the rains LA is getting this year, that the LA River roared to it's true destructive power.  Homes were swept away, lives lost.  Get enough water in that ditch, which wasn't paved at the time, and you've got the breeding ground for a flash flood.

So the engineers put their heads together and solved the problem by creating the eyesore that is there today.  It ain't elegant, but it works.  Anyone who has lived in LA for any length of time knows how fast and hard the rain can come, and it can be uglier than the River has ever been.

Store the water?  Store it where, is the real question.  It would have to be stored near the mouth of the river, and that's all port area.

Of course, now there are people with short memories who take one look at the riverbed and want to make it into a parkland.  Plant trees, make it pretty.  Never mind that with every serious rain that park would get swept away faster than a Madonna movie.

Best of vibes to all in SoCal right now.  Been there, don't really miss it, but I appreciate what you're going though.

Store the water?  Store it where, is the real question.  It would have to be stored near the mouth of the river, and that's all port area.

Well, they managed -- over the last 70 years or so -- to engineer hundreds of millions of gallons of water away from the valleys and Mono Lake to slake/sate the thirsty desert town of L.A.

With the technology available today, one would think they could man-make a reservoir and find a way to divert such torrential outflow INTO it....

I get your drift as to "where" it ought to be.  But it seems to me that all those minds that used to contemplate towing icebergs down to the southern climes and using desalination science to "water the desert" should have been able to figure out how to salvage the water that does manage to fall on LA.

I could have sworn I read somewhere that there was going to be a surprise gay character. Maybe that was just wishful thinking on my part.

DRMattH, there was a blurb in TVGuide hinting at Bree's husband's involvement with a man.  There was nothing about his S&M fantasies.   Given all the other madness on the show, it might have been something to throw readers and viewers off track.

Here the Canadian station is showing MEDIUM at 9pm (instead of 10pm on NBC).

...With the technology available today, one would think they could man-make a reservoir and find a way to divert such torrential outflow INTO it....

I get your drift as to "where" it ought to be.  But it seems to me that all those minds that used to contemplate towing icebergs down to the southern climes and using desalination science to "water the desert" should have been able to figure out how to salvage the water that does manage to fall on LA.
Der Brucer pointed out something in the interim: that the land itself in Los Angeles is part of the problem.  There's only so much water the land can hold, which as it happens is very little.  It's part of the desert landscape, that the water flows into the earth very quickly...and flows out just as quickly, all downhill.  Thus, DR Pogue's neighbors are collapsing.  Thus, the water flows out of the land and into that concrete river.  Engineers have looked at the water storage question from all angles, and the solution they've got is the best they can create.

Another DerB addendum: the people that died in the floods before the LA River was paved numbered in the thousands.

Not to mention someone getting swept away in the floodwaters every time there's a storm, even today.

The rain slackened enough to take Tewkes out for a quick squirt (and he did so much more! The dear boy!) and went up the hill to survey the damage of the slide.  Not only dirt came down but several rather small trees or large bushes, right up to the neighbour's fence on the other side of the road.  The spot that collapsed used to be something of a deer warren.  Every year there seemed to be a doe and a couple of fawns living there.  Hope none were caught in the slide.  But then I didn't see any askew hooves sticking out of the branches or from under the dirt piles.

A. Mono lake to LA - downhill (nature pays the energy coat); putting water back - uphill - mucho big bucks energy cost!

B. Actually the LA Basin is ringed by systems of dams and reservoirs to collect water - the flooding LA and San Gabriel rivers are the result of spill-over from these reservoirs!

C. Studies to use rain water to recharge the aquafiers have always come up short. During the rainy seasons the aquafiers rapidly recharge and when the later torrents come, there is no water-room left at the aquafier inn.

D. Nature's way of charging aquafiers is a slow seepage process; when man decided to pave over most of the desert that is now LA County, he removed the vast majority of seepage points; since the rain now has no place to soak in, it follows gravity desparately looking for a resting place.

E. All that pavement in LA County also serves as a depository of vast quantities of oil and grease that result from the operation and storage of motor vehicles. Throughout the long dry season, the oils accumulate, and come the rains, vast quatities of hydrocarbons are released into the flowing rainwater and crate torrents of petro-sludge flowing into the rivers and on to the sea.

F. The vast collection of debris you saw in the picture I posted of Long Beach harbor is the result of trash entering the LA river from all the many up-stream towns. After years of argument, legislation has been passed requiring the various cities to clean up their run-off before it hits the river; virtually every city is suing to stop implementaion of the legislation maintaining that the cost is probibitive - "If the river is to be made clean we will have no police or fire, and all the libraries and parks shall be closed!"

G. The pillaging of MONO lake was cost-effective (from an LA point of View) - the creation of additional storm water holding facilies is not. (Note - the Bay area solved their water problems by building huge dams and flooding vast areas of pristine wilderness.)

H. In spite of all of these problems, southern California is still continuing on an never-ending quest to cover more dirt with concrete to provide homes for people who will need lots of water and will demand more roads for transportation.

I. Even though the conservationists can predict where the floods will be, where there will mudslides, and where there will be significant fire danger, the home builders return! (Like natives retuning to settle on the slopes of a volcano before the lava is cool.)

The handyman and partner are on the roof, so presumably problem one is being dealt with.  I'm more interested to see how they deal with problem two, the water that's coming UP from the floor to the rug.

Well, in my Long Beach house, the very first sign I had of a leaky roof was damp carpet (which was covering even damper floor boards). The rain soaked through the rafters and the path of least resistence took it down the wall studs and along the floor joists were it soaked in and dripped to the ground. The dry floor boards and the overlying carpet acted like a wick to suck some of the water back up.

Isn't that special!

That's a vital question. I for one would like to go to the official opening. If that's the consensus, I'd like the date, so I can see about a plane ticket working around said date. I would probably fly in the day before and leave the day after - so the exact date is important.

"Hooka Tooka" is a very old expression, and I'm sure Chubby simply adapted it for his twist album

It was born on the streets, in the neighborhoods, of New York City.

Some guy, most likely named Vito, walked up to a cop and, gesticulating wildly toward a woman walking down the street, exclaimed: "That hooka tooka my wallet!"

Yeah....that's how it was born.

Extracts from the PBS (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/shows/candide/) website:

Quote
Broadway and operetta unite in the New York Philharmonic's semistaged performance of the satirical, effervescent musical "Candide" by Leonard Bernstein, the conductor and composer who was so intimately associated with the orchestra. Equally drawn from the classical and musical theater worlds, the cast includes Broadway's "Wicked" Kristin Chenoweth as Cunegonde, Patti LuPone in a star turn as The Old Lady, Paul Groves as Candide, and Sir Thomas Allen as Dr. Pangloss/Narrator. Staged by Broadway actor-director Lonny Price, whose recent work includes the San Francisco Symphony's Emmy Award-winning, semistaged production of Stephen Sondheim's "Sweeney Todd" in 2000, "Candide" features Bernstein protégé Marin Alsop conducting the New York Philharmonic, with the participation of the Westminster Symphonic Choir.

More extracts from a wonderful essay on the site:

Quote
When "Candide" first opened on Broadway in 1956, expectations were very high. Voltaire's comic novella of 1759 for the musical stage was adapted by Lillian Hellman, one of America's pre-eminent playwrights, and famed composer Leonard Bernstein wrote the music. He had already composed the scores for such musical theater hits as "On the Town" and "Wonderful Town" and, within a year, would be represented on Broadway again with "West Side Story." The lyricists for "Candide" included the young and promising John Latouche, the renowned wit Dorothy Parker, and the celebrated American poet Richard Wilbur. The production was staged by esteemed drama and opera director Tyrone Guthrie and the cast featured two of the most beautiful voices heard on Broadway in the 1950s: Barbara Cook and Robert Rounseville. Rarely had a show opened on Broadway with a more distinguished pedigree.

Perhaps such impressive credits could only lead to disappointment, for audiences and critics were generally let down.

It barely managed to run three months on Broadway, closing after 73 performances. However, the cast recording immediately became a classic, while Bernstein's overture became one of the most frequently performed and beloved of all orchestral pieces.

The musical was saved from sinking into relative obscurity in 1973 when director Harold Prince and librettist Hugh Wheeler refashioned the piece into a raucous, silly, and playful farce that was closer to Voltaire's comic book original. Much of the score was deleted, Stephen Sondheim wrote some additional lyrics to existing Bernstein music, and a young and very unoperatic cast performed it in a circuslike setting at the Chelsea Theatre Center in the Brooklyn Academy of Music and later on Broadway. This time "Candide" was a hit, running 740 performances (though it still lost money due to the limited seating in the environmental rearrangement of the large Broadway Theatre).

As "Candide" was revived across the country and in Europe, much of the Bernstein score was restored, and today the "comic operetta" (as it can most accurately be described) is a combination of the original 1956 version and the 1973 revised revival. The score now takes precedence, but it is held together by Wheeler's book. As the philosophical Dr. Pangloss might say, today's "Candide" is "the best of all possible Candides." Ironically, there is no definitive "Candide." Every production picks and chooses from the wide selection of songs and instrumental pieces that have been used over the years. To perform all the music available would take several hours. Before his death in 1990, Bernstein himself conducted a complete recording of all the "Candide" musical variations; it is a dazzling, remarkable collection, but not something that can be put on the stage effectively.
….
The staged concert version with the New York Philharmonic broadcast on GREAT PERFORMANCES is no exception. Director and adaptor Lonny Price retains much of the Wheeler book, adding his own narration and contemporary jokes to the 1973 script. But unlike in that version, several songs from the 1956 production are restored. The character of The Old Lady only had one song in the 1973 revival: the delicious Latin number "I Am Easily Assimilated." However, in this concert version, The Old Lady (played with panache by Patti LuPone) is featured in five songs, including the rarely heard duet "We Are Women," which was cut from the original production. Another unusual number, also cut in 1956, is "Dear Boy," perhaps the most cynical song in the score. It is performed by Sir Thomas Allen as Dr. Pangloss and, while it tends to slow down the action, it is a fascinating sample of the tone that pervaded much of Hellman's original script.

Paul Groves and Kristen Chenoweth, as Candide and Cunegonde, sing most of the score's most famous pieces, from "Oh, Happy We" to "Make Our Garden Grow," which are heard in all productions of the operetta. But director Price sees to it that these numbers do not become too reverent or set pieces that are removed from the rest of the show. The duets and Cunegonde's explosive aria "Glitter and Be Gay" are played primarily as comic songs, which they are, rather than operatic showcases. Chenoweth brings down the house with her solo, but it is as much for her astute comic skills as for her considerable vocal pyrotechnics.

In many ways this staged concert version is "the best of all possible worlds" because it wisely mixes Broadway performers with opera talents. In this way both the musical genius and the comic ingenuity of the piece are justly served. Yet such a grand performance would not be possible without Prince and Wheeler's rethinking and revitalizing "Candide" in 1973. One of American theater's most beloved flops was given new life and a prodigious future on stages around the world was secured. It remains the greatest theatrical rescue in Broadway history.

The sucking continues unabated.  Of course, now that the man is on the roof putting plastic covering over the leaky bits, the rain is nowhere to be found.

I must have one of these sucking machines.  Soon the carpet and pad underneath will be completely dry, and hopefully the covering will prevent any more problems.  At some point when the rain is through they'll come back and do some re-roofing.  But at least I shan't have to worry if the big storm they're predicting comes this evening.  Hopefully, the LA weather report will be as wrong as it usually is.

I will be taping HOW'D THEY DO THAT.

At 7pm I must tune to channel 15 to watch a special preview of a pilot for a proposed television show. At 8:30 pm I will be called on the telephone to answer multiple questions about the show to find out what I thought of it.

I did this once before, several months ago. It was fun to give my opinion of the show and it's cast...even though the show sort of sucked...but unlike BK's machine, it sucked in a bad way.

When they called to ask me to watch the show they kept asking me about programs like LAW AND ORDER and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES....so I imagine this program that I will be watching will be along the lines of one of those two.

Sucking is over.  The carpet is still a little damp, but not sopping wet like it was.  I'm really glad this got taken care of (it just occured late yesterday afternoon) - if it had gone another day it would have been much worse.  It was getting wet under the dresser, and that could have been a disaster in the making.  The man is on the roof in the dark, putting up whatever stuff he is to block the leaks.

There's an error about the CANDIDE composition in the PBS site:  "We Are Women" was written for the 1958 London production.  It replaced "Quiet!," and it was sung by Cunegonde and The Old Lady in heavily padded costumes, the point being that while under the protection of the Governor of Buenos Aires they had grown enormously fat.  Part of the joke was their singing about being dainty little women so light they could dance on eggs.

Denis Quilley, who played Candide in that production, says in his posthumous bio that Sandy Wilson was the reason for the show's failure in London; CANDIDE replaced/drove VALMOUTH out of the Savoy (?) and Sandy wilson's scathing review wasa the nail in the coffin.  He quotes the entire review in his bio.  In 1999, he played the King in JUBILEE and we got to talk a bit about the 1958 production.

Elmore, was Denis Quilley as nice a man as I suspect he was? I saw him in his next to last play, HUMBLE BOY, in which Diana Rigg had the best programme bio I ever read.  I quote it in its entirety: "Diana Rigg has been around a very long time and this is the sixth time she has coupled with Denis Quilley."

From  Broadway.com (http://www.broadway.com/Gen/Buzz_Story.aspx?ci=504833):

Quote
Harry Connick, Jr. to Star in Fall 2005 B'way Pajama Game Revival

Harry Connick, Jr. is set to play Sid Sorokin in a revival of the musical The Pajama Game on the Great White Way. The production, directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, is aiming for a Broadway berth in November 2005, according to The New York Times.

As previously reported, this revival of The Pajama Game is expected to feature two news songs by Adler and a revised book by Peter Ackerman (the actor-turned-writer behind the play Things You Shouldn't Say Past Midnight and the film Ice Age).

Shucks - new songs, revised book; why not add a falling chandelier, some foul mouth puppets and play the whole thing on roller skates and ensure a hit!

Absolute delight!  While he was doing JUBILEE in concert, he was playing Martin in John Caird's adaptation of CANDIDE at the National.  These were the only two performances I saw him give onstage.  I'm bummed because I'd forgotten he was in the film of PRIVATES ON PARADE with my friend Simon Jones, and that would have been something else to ask him about.  He did do a mean impersonation of Lillian Hellman, who was still the credited librettist on the 1958 CANDIDE.

Today's Frances Farmer LOL moment (courtesy of IMDb):  well it's not a review, per se, but one of the unwashed masses that BK and Pogue have lamented posted at the IMDb that the reason Kim Stanley agreed to play Lillian Farmer in Frances is because she felt guilty that she was the actress who "stole" the role of Lorna Moon from Frances for the London production of Golden Boy.  Ummm....Kim Stanley would have been 13 in 1938, a tad young for Lorna, doncha think?  I of course excoriated him.

Interesting - I think there's been so much horror on the news in the last few years - particularly recently - that people have become immune or desensitized. In ye olde days, when the kind of footage of the CA storm that's being shown on the (national) news and CNN overseas was aired, I would have gotten at least four calls by now from various parts of the world, asking if all was well. And '24,' of course, had two more matchless episodes. For suspense and surprise, nothing quite matches this show. One really never knows whether the regulars will live or die from episode to episode. A character I thought would be around most of the season, perhaps as a hostage or a lifeline for one of the other characters, was killed tonight.

Ah, MusicGuy has played concerts at Wanamaker's.  I think you have to go through Ladies Shoes to get to the console.

Jane, I am the one without the glasses, without the beard, and without the hair.  I borrowed Jason's pic of Natalie Wood because (a) I love Natalie Wood and (b) the picture of me I keep trying to post I am told is too big and I don't know how to resize it.

Marzipan Pigs are very big around Easter.  They're very easy to find in Australia.. so maybe Tomovoz will send marzipan pigs to those desiring them.  They're considered lucky or something.  I love things made out of Marzipan-- it all looks so pretty.  Unfortunately, marzipan tastes kind of like hardened Cream of Wheat.

Let's all sing the Cream of Wheat song:

"Cream of Wheat is so good to eat,
And we eat it everyday.
We sing this song as we go along,
And we always shout "Hooray'
It's good for growing children and for grown ups too to eat.
Something, something, something,
You can't beat Cream of Wheat"

Actually it was commercial free! And the show they made me watch was a 90 minute show of ALIAS...the first episode I am guessing...I have never seen the show before but I have heard it mentioned on HHW.

I have to say that it was not really my kind of show, but like a good boy I sat through all 90 minutes...and like clockwork they called me as soon as it was over and asked me questions for just over 30 minutes...whew...!

Still it was fun to give my opinion of a show, even if it was one I wasn't crazy about.

It's the aspect-ratio:  it needs to be 110x150 pixels.  Take the number of pixels across and divide by .73 and you'll get the number of pixels that it should be up and down...if that makes sense.

Hmmm... the  photographer's web site (http://www.frozenbay.com/philadelphia.php)  dated the pictures as February 2004.

Can Jose still meet us at this Eagle?

der Brucer

Ya, know, you are probably right about the Wanamaker pics.  It does look sort of modern and lacks the quaint cluttered look of the old retail aisles.  Maybe one day this week I'll take a stroll over there with my cam and check it out.

I'd be delighted for us to meet DR Jose at this Eagle.  I've also never been at that Eagle.  ::)

Time for some math, a word problem...

It is now 1:00AM EST.

I have a matinee of HALLELUJAH, BABY! at Noon tomorrow/today.  That is 11 hours from now.

To get to said matinee on time, I will have to leave the house no later than 10:45AM.  Preferably 10:30AM.  *Parking is quite the "adventure" during the weekdays.

Which means I should be up and out of bed by 9:30AM at the latest.

And since I've been getting up anywhere around 11:00AM-12:30PM the past few days.

So, this means I should go to bed...???

Now.  Soon.  Later.  -But not much later.

However, this also means I shall be able to be on I-95 South heading back to Richmond by 2:20PM Tuesday afternoon.  And my mise en place for my baking should be set up by 7:00PM.

So, until the morning...

Goodnight.

and I can buy the dogs some treats:

And don't forget the best ice cream in the world:

Oh... The reviews for Papermill's production of HAROLD AND MAUDE: THE MUSICAL are out - at least on the NYTimes website...

Happy(?) reading.

You're welcome! It's the aspect-ratio:  it needs to be 110x150 pixels.  Take the number of pixels across and divide by .73 and you'll get the number of pixels that it should be up and down...if that makes sense.

Thanks, DR George.  Here's what I get when I properly adjust the aspect ratio of my avatar pic:

Has Ann caught up?

Stay awake for the notes - they're very mysterious.

I believe that whilst Ann is catching up I shall take a nice long hot shower.

The "Eagle" as in Wanamaker's Grand Foyer, not the "Eagle" as in...well, you know :o
There is no "Eagle" in Philly.

On the other hand, der B and I have dropped in at the Bike Stop (http://www.thebikestop.com/home.asp) more than once.   8)

Of course, if we're meeting at the Reading Terminal Market, der B knows where to find me...at the Cook Book Nook.
