Has there ever been a composer quite like Heitor Villa-Lobos? He was not only hugely prolific, but also completely unique, his music living in an exotic sound and tone world like no other. He wrote in classic forms – symphonies, concertos, string quartets, ballets, operas – but his music, even in his earliest pieces, is refreshing and original. By the end of his life he was known as the best South American composer of all time, with over 2,000 published works – eclectic and diverse works that remain as fresh, vibrant, and vital today as the day they were written, especially his amazing Choros and Bachianas Brasileiras, which were amongst his most famous and admired works. His music appealed to jazz musicians, several of whom made jazz renditions of his music, including Bill Evans, Claus Ogerman, and guitarist Jan Akkerman. He had a healthy concert career conducting his own music. His music was also adapted by the writing team of Robert Wright and George Forrest (Kismet) for the Broadway musical, Magdalena.

The music of Villa-Lobos was always very evocative and would have been at home in any number of films. He did, in fact, write one major studio film score, but it was not a happy experience. He was hired to score the MGM film, Green Mansions, starring Audrey Hepburn and Anthony Perkins. But as these things go in Hollywood, much of his music was replaced by composer Bronislau Kaper.

Both the “Choros No. 6” and “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 7” are filled with Villa-Lobos’ trademark exotic instrumentation and orchestral color and both pieces have stunningly gorgeous melodies and are profoundly beautiful.

The two works on this CD were recorded in mono sound by Remington Records in Berlin during 1954. While Villa-Lobos recorded “Bachianas Brasileiras No. 7” for Pathe/EMI, this remains the only recording of him conducting the “Choros No. 6.” These two works were issued on CD back in 1986 sounding as good as the then technology would allow. But for this CD they have been given what we hope you’ll find is a large and significant upgrade in sound – they now sound as good as the day they were recorded and the mono sound is crisp, clean, open, and detailed as never before. These are wonderful performances and historically important.

She went on Space Mountain once and was afraid to go on the other rides. We teased her that most were nothing compared to her racing us through the park to get us back inside the lodge gates before they closed 😁

Emily, our guide, said he must be after something and began to persue him. He reach a fork in the road ahead of us and we had lost him, at least it seemed that way to us. Many forks, twists and turns later we pulled up behind the stopped vehicle.

Post by: Jane on January 02, 2018, 04:54:40 AM: We saw the beautiful Wild Dogs that sadley are on the verge of extinction. They had made a kill, thankfully hidden behind the brush from us. Flying overhead was an assortment of varies types of vultures, all which were rather pretty. To our surprise there were several Marabou Storks.

Incredible, beautiful, exciting, and I want one of those unique dogs. There will be photos on facebook.

Speaking of which, Thatch ha begun tossing his bowl when he's finished eating, I keep finding turned-over bowls and spilled food. I have to tell him that there are nasty goblins in the basement who eat cute little kittens who mess with their food and dishes. He's afraid of goblins.

It was terribly hot, without a breeze, plus we were sitting in the sun. After seeing the elehants play in the water and watching a heard of Cape Buffalo we were ready to turn back. Instead we continued on for a couple of hours more.

The emotion of the mother, siblings and herd was palpable. They would not leave the body and, gently, every so often, would circle the infant and place their trunks on the baby. So very emotional to witness. Africa, a wonderful, wondrous adventure!

As we drove away, until I could no longer see, the mother was stranding alone over her baby.

The only time I was concerned, and I was the only one that noticed, was while watching the sad ceremony. A big male approached the back of our 4x4 and watched us very carefully. I guess we showed the appropriate respect and he left us alone.

Well, I was all set for mine and discovered that we have no running water, thanks to the crew working across the street. Wonder if we have a broken water main - that can be a mess in this cold weather.

I've always felt that the high cost of books, particularly works of fiction, limits the reading audience, because most people read a book once, then either sell it, give it away, or stick it in their bookshelf to be forgotten. Indeed, new copies of over-sized paperbacks usually sell for $20.00 or more.

RIDICULOUS!

I had an offer from a well-known publisher to publish DARK CHASM, but that house wanted to price it at $20.00. I thought that was an exorbitant price, because I wanted to reach a wide audience, especially readers who enjoy horror/science-fiction tales.

That's why I've decided to publish DARK CHASM through CreateSpace and price it at $9.95 for the paperback and $4.95 for the Kindle edition.

I hope you'll support my efforts and purchase a copy of DARK CHASM, because if this experiment is successful, other established authors might forego the publishing houses and come out with their books at a much more affordable price.

We've committed to our producers that this is the script for our read-through at our first rehearsal next Monday, so they can get to the process of getting the scripts printed with plenty of time to do it rather than having to run through printing them over the weekend.

Post by: Jrand73 on January 02, 2018, 03:16:38 PM: I announced our season on Facebook and the website - now people will start calling for tickets even though the story CLEARLY states season ticket information will be mailed in the spring....individual tickets are NOT ON SALE until June 4.

But of course everyone thinks he's special......

And then there are the High School/Middle School and Elementary School workshops.....story says REGISTRATION BEGINS IN MARCH....but we will start getting calls and emails to get the special snowflakes in..... And of course NONE of these people ever buy a ticket to see a regular show OR donate a dime to the Fund Drive. They come ONE NIGHT a year, tear up our parking lot and complain about the seating and every thing else. At least that's been the way of it the past 15 years. I don't expect it to be any different this year.....

If your sister has read about elephants she is aware of their attachment to each other, especially to a baby. Being aware and seeing it up close aware very different experiences.

If your sister has read about elephants she is aware of their attachment to each other, especially to a baby. Being aware and seeing it up close aware very different experiences.

She definitely knows about their attachments. She watched this documentary that showed a group of elephants that came across some elephant bones (not from a recent death). The group became quiet as they walked by and they all touched the bones with their trunks, seemingly to show respect for the dead elephant, even though it probably wasn't from their herd or family.
