Post by: bk on January 09, 2018, 12:29:57 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of necessary and needed respite and relief, and now it is time for you to post until the relieved cows come home.

The temperatures have risen, and it's too warm in the apartment now.  So, I slept very poorly last night.  I dreamed that I was in college about to take a music final.  Tom Cruise, an actor I really detest, made an appearance in another. Annabelle and Thatch joined me around 3:00, and Thatch spent the next four hours jumping in and out of bed, lying down for a few minutes, then running off to play.  He's like aq hyper-active child.

As I post this, we are within an hour or so of reaching - and then exceeding - 32 degrees F.

F is for Freezing.

This will be for the first time in ... how many days, I don't know.  A couple of weeks, easily.

Today I must drive down to New Haven to pick up my music for Into the Woods.  The show is two months away, but I want to get the keyboard programmed and make sure I can play it all effortlessly.  Hard to believe, but this will be my first time.  Oh, I've "played" it, in auditions and even subbing for rehearsals, but for some reason - for me - this score has been the most nightmarish Sondheim to sightread and play halfway decently without thorough study.  Probably just me, but that's the way it is, and I intend to finally shake the curse.

No good deed goes unpunished.  The washer containing a lot of water-soaked towels died just before the spin cycle, claiming it was unbalanced.  So, I had to put all the towels into the dryer and God knows how long it will take for them to dry.  I'm expecting two hours minimum.  This really pisses me off.

Does it work with these machines to take everything out and simply reload it?  You can "fix" that problem in home machines sometimes.

No.  You need to disconnect for 30 minutes for the washer to reset. Then hope all is well.

I have not chosen a cat/kitten since I was about 10 years old.  Sandra has chosen a few -- one from a friend's pet shop and two from shelters. Rex showed up at the house, and the rest (including Joshie) were fosters that didn't get adopted.

I have wanted a calico for years. So if I get to choose one, I would like a calico. Although I fully expect when I go to the shelter, I will probably fall in love with something else.

I've never seen that before.  It is annoying enough when you need to re-balance the clothing, extremely annoying if it completely shuts the machine off.

DR Laura I seem to recall your original decision to wait on a kitten has to do with the fact you have an older cat (I greatly apologizing for not remember this cat's name) that will be very unhappy with a new kitten.

My suggestion then is to offer to foster the next litter of calico kittens ;)

That's a nice score DR GEORGE!

DR TCB - your computer comes with so much space on its hard drive.  If you get an external hard drive, you can store programs and photos and documents, etc, there and use less space on your internal hard drive.  Your computer can run faster, I think.

I have 1 TB of memory on my computer, but most of my above named stuff is saved on an external 1 TB hard drive.  It uses a USB cable and is always plugged in, so it is easy to use.

I am thinking about getting a larger one 2 or 4 TB so I can put even more stuff from my internal drive on it......

Quote
I hate to sound stupid but what exactly is an external hard drive?
Title: Re: RESPITE AND RELIEF
Post by: George on January 09, 2018, 11:22:45 AM
Here is a short answer:

Quote
An external hard drive is a portable storage device that can be attached to a computer through a USB or FireWire connection, or wirelessly. External hard drives typically have high storage capacities and are often used to back up computers or serve as a network drive.

Sometimes those short-haired cats shed more, or it is just more difficult to pick up short hair than long hair.  I know what you mean about brushing.

Hello, everyone.
Title: Re: RESPITE AND RELIEF
Post by: bk on January 09, 2018, 02:37:53 PM
I got the call from Muse Margaret and knew instantly there were problems - I can read her voice after all these years.  So, first she wanted me to tell her again what the second half of the book is going to be - I did, and she loved it and knowing that helped her clarify what her problems were with what she'd read.  And as it turns out it all had to do with her not liking certain things about the lead character of the first half of the book and as it further turned out, it was really minor stuff.  She in fact spent most of the rest of the conversation talking effusively about what she loved.  So, I wrote down stuff to make sure I'd look at each thing that bothered her.  And most of it was in the first twenty pages, and most really in the first five pages.

So, after I got off the phone I went right to those pages, read through them, and pretty much agreed about all of the stuff she'd mentioned.  She's just really good about knowing when something isn't quite right.  And of course I was feeling my way at the beginning of the book, trying to find the character, which she sensed was the case.  In the end, the fixes were extremely simple and quick to do - cutting a handful of words and/or lines, adding some dialogue, and making one character a little more disagreeable, which I did easily in about five lines of dialogue in two different sequences.  After that, it was literally just losing a word or two occasionally to keep the lead character really likable.  I'll read her all those changes this evening and I'm hoping they did the trick, which I think they did.  It's much better with those fixes.  Otherwise, she liked pretty much everything, especially some of the humor and some history she didn't know.

In the continuing saga of DR Jeanne's dental drama...

Today I was back at the dentist, and brought in what I thought was one of the veneers to be recemented. The dentist said it wasn't a veneer--just a bit that had broken off the temporary crown. My veneers are all still in place, he said. That's a relief of $$$.

But then he said, "Since we have some extra time today I'd like to open up the root canal and clean it out." WHAT?? "You want to DRILL?" Today was supposed to be EASY! I eventually consented and he numbed me. Then he looked at the x-rays again and changed his mind. He decided on a less invasive, non-drilling approach, which didn't hurt because I was numb. He feels the work on that tooth is complete. I HOPE SO!!

I am now waiting to become unnumb so I can eat some lunch. I was scheduled to return next week to start root canal #2, but I begged off for a couple weeks. I need a break!

Don't be in a rush to go home as much as you want to.

Thanks, DR FJL!  I ordered my ticket.  See you Monday!

That's great!  We heard that about 140 reservations have been made at this point.  Not sure how big the house is, but it sounds like a good-size crowd (and also, when an event is free, you have to allow for some no-shows.)

And now, I'm off.  I've been havin' a hankerin' for some Quiznos (http://www.quiznos.com/Home.aspx) subs, but there isn't a local one.  I haven't had it since I visited my friend in Seattle last summer, and the last time before that was years ago.  I recently found out that there are a couple about 12-15 miles away (one is north and one is east from here), which isn't bad.  Hopefully, it's as good as I remember!

Be back later!

Haven't written a lot of new pages, because I was hoping to read Muse Margaret all the changes I'd made to the first twenty pages, but I fear now I will not hear from her until morning - she tends to go to bed early.  Maybe she'll call before eight-thirty - it would be better for me if it was tonight, less to worry about.  We'll see.  So, if I do another four pages before bedtime I'll still be at my ten pages a day.

Thanks for the vibes.

I haven't taken any pain meds since morning and am not too uncomfortable, so that is good.

Earlier today, I forgot to ask Jrand to crank up the ole Dream o' Matic. Early this morning I had a dream that I ran into Barak Obama. He had opened an Indian restaurant in DC. I do love Indian food and this was quite good. I was there with a friend who passed away last year about this time. Longing to return to my life in Alexandria, VA in the 1990s?

Took a break and watched a documentary.  I still have three pages to write and I really wish I'd heard from the Muse this evening, because until I know she's happy with the handful of adjustments, it's very hard to have the proper energy.  That said, I've written five or six pages of completely new material and will now take a hot shower and see if some lovely idea pops into my head for the next three pages.

I'll definitely go back, but it turns out that it was farther (further?) away than what Google maps indicated.  It didn't start from where I actually was.  Oh, well.  It was still close enough to go to once in a while. ;D
