Title: THE LITTLE PEOPLE IN MY HEAD
Post by: bk on January 11, 2005, 11:58:51 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know all about BK and the Little People, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home.  Do your thing, you dear, dear people out there in the dark.  And let's have some fershluganah questions for a change.

Well, no...I haven't read the notes because I can't get to the notes.  This has been happening the last two or three times I've tried t access them.  I access the site through my history; go to the column and get yesterday's column.  A few times I've had to go to the column archives and there is a link to the new column there.  This did not work tonight.  I just went to my favourites and tried to access it there.  No dice.  Still yesterdays.  What's going on?

Hmmm, I don't know.  Usually clearing the cache works, but I don't know why you're having the problem.  They're definitely up.  Are you using IE?

I had a hard time finding the Notes - but I finally did - by using IE. I'm going to try to get some sleep as I intend to get up very early. Very very early in the morning is my favorite writing time. My head is clear and I know that no one will disturb me, the phone won't ring, no strange women will knock on my door. Plus, it feels like I'm playing a trick on the day and getting lots done before the day, trickster that is, decides to run away from me.

Pogue, once you get to the old notes, have you tried refreshing the page (there should be a little "refresh" icon at the top of your screen somewhere).

I just tried again through AOL and got the old notes. But through IE I got the new notes.
Title: Re:THE LITTLE PEOPLE IN MY HEAD
Post by: Panni on January 12, 2005, 12:13:41 AM
Safari is also showing the old notes,
Title: Re:THE LITTLE PEOPLE IN MY HEAD
Post by: bk on January 12, 2005, 12:14:25 AM
It's got to do with the cache, although I just looked through AOL and they're there, and they're there through IE and Safari as well.

The little people are still having a party.
Title: Re:THE LITTLE PEOPLE IN MY HEAD
Post by: Charles Pogue on January 12, 2005, 12:15:16 AM
I finally got in by exiting my internet page and then bringing it back up and going to my history and accessing like I always do.  This time it worked.  I wonder if it just has something to do with accessing too soon after the notes go up.  Maybe it's your new Mac...Yeah...yeah...That's it!  It's your damned new computer! It's all your fault!

You know what's good for headaches, BK? Sugared leeks on toast. I made a batch for you.

I am very proud to accept my haineshisway.com Gold Star. There are just so many people to thank. My agent, my parents, my high school English teacher...

I am also proud to be gloriously wacky. Thank you, Panni.

I have another story, but it will require a visual aid. That will give you something to look forward to while I try to find said visual aid.

Secondly, BK, are you allowed to tell the "scoop" that you learned from Mr. Paul Lazarus?  We Sondheads (fans of Sondheim, and I didn't invent the name) are waiting with baited breath!...unless you're NOT at liberty (an Elaine Stritch reference) to divulge your little bit of information, in which case, we Sondheads will just have to be very disappointed until the scoop is released by some other scoop-releasing news organization.

Thirdly, I will be errant and truant most of the day, today (Wednesday).  A touring company of Crazy For You is coming to Olympia and I will be one of the local grunts working with the tour company to move things...actually, I usually work with the costume people.  It's easier than other jobs, has a later morning call and earlier finishing time after the show is over.  Of course that means less money, but it's not too much of a difference.  So that's what I'll be doing most of the day.  I have to get there at 9:00 a.m. (that's only seven and a half hours away!) and we'll probably work until 1:00 p.m. or so...maybe 2:00, then break for lunch.  Our show call is usually 6:00 p.m. for a 7:30 show.  Then we stay until it's all packed up and in the truck. ;D

Good Morning!!!!

.....And seven and a half hours later he emerged from the kitchen....

Final tally:  One batch of Oatmeal-Chocolate-Chip-Pecan-Toffee Cookies; One batch of Peanut Butter Cookies; and - the crowning achievement of the evening, One German Chocolate Cake.  -The cake was a "special order" placed by one of the dressers for Hallelujah, Baby!  I could have baked it at a later date, but...  Of course, now I'm thinking that I probably should have...  But it looks good, and the new recipe I tried (from Cook's Illustrated) wasn't too fussy, but it was still fussy..

Oy!  My brain is melting down right now...  But first I post...

I'm gonna head back into the kitchen momentarily and bag up the cookies - the cake is already in the fridge.  Then I'm gonna plop myself on my bed and get a few hours of sleep.  Then I have a few errands to run before heading back up to DC...  -Oh, and it's supposed to be in the upper 60's, lower 70's today!

Well...

DR Pogue et al - When you access a page from your History, IE will automatically see if that page is still in your cache, thus you will get the "old" page.  And the page will come fast too.  Now, if you had closed IE in the interim, it may bring up the new page.  -Since closing IE clears your cache - usually - check your IE settings.

It's best to save haineshisway.com and other sites in your Favorites list.  Each time you click on a Favorite, it accesses the page anew.

AOL automatically accesses cached pages too - this way it give the illusion of a very fast connection speed.  In AOL, just hit the Refresh icon - the Pisces-like arrows, and that should "force" IE/AOL to access the page anew.

I will say, the "cache" has saved me a few times.  There have been times when I've logged off, but still kept IE open.  And depending upon how many other web pages I've browsed, I can usually bring up a recently viewed page off-line.

Hope your little people have perfectly gone this morning, dear BK.
Today is Ask Day, right?
Having a question to dear BK or to Dear Readers who has no little people in your heads. I’d like to have some information about a film “Scarlet Street” which I’ve never seen before. A few days ago my friend, who is talented for painting, in Buffalo, recommended me to watch it , but unfortunately I couldn’t find a DVD but only a VHS from it in Japan. I’ll buy at least a VHS and I’d like to know your opinions on the film before my purchase, for my reference.
Thank you in advance.

DR Jane thanks for your concern and the neurologist's appointment went well. I just have to go in for an MRI of my upper leg this coming Tuesday (The problem area) so they can compare MRI's to make sure I am not having any troubles. It's a yearly thing so don't be too worried. (Though I have been bad and haven't been for two years, but I am being better about it now.)

Well I do have cable back now but at about 10:30 Eastern Time we lost power, phones, and everything. We all ran up to the third floor of the house because water was leaking onto one of the girl's beds because it was raining. We were getting ready to help move her bed and take her sheets down to the dryer when the power went out. We had been in the basement earlier and it looked like water was coming up out of the floor and not at the drains. Well when the power went off so did the sump pump. So we had to get down there and get everything up off the floor that we could because the water was rising quickly down there. We got the girl's squared away with lots of candles and we got a few candles for ourselves over in the cottage. It was funny because we had just listened to a song about the rain and how things are always good in the end even if you can't see it.  Power came back on at about 3:30 so I am REALLY back now. (Knock on wood)

News Flash:

According to the New York Times, A Chorus Line will be coming back to Broadway.

"A Chorus Line" will open on Sept. 21, 2006, at a theater to be named."

From the Times:

"Michael Bennet's landmark musical about the lives of Broadway dancers is to be restaged with the help of three of the original production's creators: the composer Marvin Hamlisch, the designer Robin Wagner and the choreographer Bob Avian. Produced by John Breglio, the powerful entertainment lawyer who controls Mr. Bennett's estate (he died of AIDS in 1987)."

I'll post the link but you have to register (it's free) at the site to read the entire article.

Dear Friend BK, I had a question for you yesterday and now I forget it!  I'm listening to JEEPERS CREEPERS to see if it jogs my diminishing gray cells.  And it did:  are any CDs for the first two Kritzer books floating around the manse?  I bought the first book before I knew this site existed and the second before I became an acolyte.  Barnes & Noble, of course, was quite stingy about offering any aural experience with my purchase.

I had an interesting afternoon yesterday in the NYPL Theatre Collection, helping Jeremy - my fave theatre librarian - identify actors in the 1903-1904 publicity shots for BABES IN TOYLAND.  A lot of the photos seem to be shots from THE WIZARD OF OZ (1902-1903) which employed many of the same actors, and same costume designer, because it, too, was a Julian Mitchell-Fred Hamlin production.  We're next going through the WOZ photo files looking for BIT shots.  Today it's back to proofreading on 14th Street.

Elmore, is that the library at Lincoln Center?  Did I ever tell you that that's where I had my career-choice epiphany back in 1967?  I understand it's been refurbished - maybe next time I'm in NY we can go there?

Ginny said regarding the Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts:

"I understand it's been refurbished"

I am not one of the fans of the "refurbishment" The space certainly needed work but for all the money and time it took, they didn't do so well (IMHO). Granted, I don't use the research facilities so I can't comment on that space, but the spaces I use seem more crowded and cluttered than before. Perhaps it's also a bit of annoyance at the idiots who borrow materials which do not belong to them and then return them to the library in less than pristine condition, taking out pages from the CD booklets or taking the entire booklet, etc., etc., etc.

Ah, well. Back to work.

I can still limbo.

Heading home yesterday, I stopped at the subway booth (Museum station - one of the less-busy ones). But there was no attendant, just a little sign that read "Back Soon." So impatient me walked over to one of the turnstiles and, yes, limboed underneath. (These turnstiles, I quickly discovered, were definitely designed to discourage limbo-ing.) I had just about wriggled through when the attendant emerged from an unmarked door. "Hey, what are you doing?" he asked. "Trying to catch my train," I replied, pass still in hand." "Only asking because I had left the gate open," he said pleasantly.

Two quick posts before we head off to ladsittingland:

First, an actual "Ask BK" question for BK!

Last week, while enjoying your Burt Bacharach Album, there were a couple of artists that der B couldn't place.  How and where did you find

Shauna Hicks ("A Bacharach Love Story")

and

Melba Joyce ("My Little Red Book"),

and would you know what's become of them since?

So, what was it like?

Ben, I hope when you find anything missing or partially missing from library materials, you will make the librarians aware of it.  A good librarian (and they all are not) will make every effort to obtain a replacement or, at least, photocopies of the missing portions and "tip" them in.  Often, the only way we in the library know that something is amiss is when a patron tells us.  Oddly enough, I just borrowed a branch library copy of bk's Lerner, Loewe, Lane and Friends and there was a "stowaway" CD in the case from something called Ultimate Broadway.
Title: Re:THE LITTLE PEOPLE IN MY HEAD
Post by: Ben on January 12, 2005, 07:07:09 AM
Yes, I make sure the librarians know that something is missing or damaged. They are usually glad to know the information. Unfortunately, sometimes, the people working in the New York Public Library are not librarians. What with budget cutbacks some of the employees working the desks are not "librarians" but civilians who do not necessarily have the dedication and knowledge to help when something is amiss.

The interview with Lynn Bernay last night went splendidly! Quite a lady! She worked quite a bit on Broadway as a dancer and an understudy...CAN CAN, GUYS AND DOLLS, etc. and she was a dancer in many major film musicals including SINGING IN THE RAIN, GUYS AND DOLLS, LATIN LOVERS, and DON'T KNOCK THE ROCK (!). And she was funny as heck...I really liked her!

Bk, I am no expert, but I understand that eating several small meals throughout the day is a much healthier way to lose weight...eating only one meal a day is just not a very good way to lose those pounds...your body ends up thinking it is starving itself, so when you do eat something your body is going to grab onto every ounce of fat from the food you do eat and store it away.

If you get one of those nifty George Foreman grills and stock your freezer with chicken and salmon you will have an easy, clean, and healthy way to eat...and don't forget your leafy greens!

I've been to a number of different Hooters many times.  First off, there really is nothing overtly immodest about the place.  True, the waitresses are bodilicious and wear tight fitting t-shirts and shorts or pants.  They are probably trained to be friendly-flirty to guys, but that's as far as it goes.  It's not a strip club with food.  I see families with kids of all ages when I'm there.

And as far as the food goes, well, it's basically wings, burgers and cheesestakes though it's all very well prepared.  I thought I read a while back that they were going to expand their munu to be compatable to a TGIF level, but the only additions I've seen lately have been different types of salads.

Max Preeo is reporting that the upcoming DVD release of Hawaii (for which I've been waiting a long, long time) is, inexplicably, going to be the edited version.  All the more strange, since the laserdisc was the unedited version.  MGM/UA has shown itself receptive to changing things when they receive protest letters, so please, everyone, fire off a letter to:

Mr. David Bishop
President of MGM Home Entertainment
2500 Broadway St.
Santa Monica, CA 90404

So my ASK BK question is:  do you know anyone at MGM/UA Home Entertainment (maybe Mr. Bishop himself) that you could tell personally what a STUPID FRIGGING IDEA this is (but only in the nicest possible way)?

MGM might be receptive to ideas in some areas of their DVD production, but they are stubbornly stupid in others including their tendency to do non-anamorphic letterbox releases on 1.66:1 widescreen films like WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION and JUDGMENT AT NUREMBURG, two absolute classics which cry out for new, anamorphic transfers.

Never been to Hooters.....I don't know what else to say about it.

DRMATTH - did you know that a subplot filmed and edited out of RTPP included Mary Astor's house burning down - her daughter-in-law, the luscious Luciana Palucci is tagged as a careless smoker early on.  And wouldn't it have been great if Robert Sterling had played Mike Rossi opposite Lana Turner in PEYTON PLACE?

And of course in the book - we learn that Mary's character, Roberta Carter, killed her husband to get his money!

One would think, wouldn't one, that the little people would have the decency to lay down some carpeting before dancing their merry way. (there's usually enough fluff in my head that I could have the little Savion Glover bouncing around, and I probably wouldn't notice!)

I did get some sleep, a little restless at times, but I feel fine now for the most part.  I've got all my stuff packed up, and I just need to finish some cleaning up in the kitchen before packing up the car and heading back up to Fairfax/DC.

I have yet to read the newer posts, but rest assured I shall catch up once I'm back up north.  Gotta run...

Laters...

*Oh, some fun tidbits on Playbill.com yesterday and today: show doctor for GOOD VIBRATIONS, A CHORUS LINE returning to Broadway (I was actually "hinted" into this while in Houston - let's hope it sticks!), etc., etc., etc...

Second question, to the DRs in general:

Have any of you actually been to a Hooter's restaurant?

Come on, fess up!  Tell the truth!

So, what was it like? ;)

I rode by one this past holiday season.  I was with my mom, an aunt and female cousin.  Oddly, everything we had driven by was remarked upon, but not "Hooters."  We drove by this g-i-n-o-r-m-o-u-s "Hooters" sign and not one word was uttered.

:D

I'm home today nursing a h-o-r-r-i-b-l-e head cold.  My sinuses are stuffed up (yet, oddly, d-r-a-i-n-i-n-g, as well), my throat is raw, I feel a bit queasy and I'm sneezing germs all over the place.

Question for BK:  Does my current condition mean I am "germinating"?

I'm swaddled in my "South Carolina flag" blanket as I type.  It's navy blue and has the palmetto tree and crescent moon of the SC state emblem on one side. It's one of those stadium blankets made of sweat shirt blend cotton (20% rayon, 80% cotton) and it's sized to keep two people warm at a football game.  It's cozy.

Re: DVD issues: "Lady in a Cage" is one of the few films scored by composer Paul Glass.  One of the best scores of the 1960s (and all-time, for that matter) was Glass' "Bunny Lake is Missing."  Other scores were for such esoterica as "Interregnum," "The Abductors" and "Nightmare in the Sun." He also wrote a score for Hammer Films' "The Seed of Astoroth," a track of which is available on the CD "The Hammer Film Music Collection, Vol. 2."

I read ... in an interview with Randy Newman...that Randy was at the recording sessions for "Bunny Lake..." with his Uncle Lionel, who exclaimed: "That music is too damned good for this picture!"

Lionel Newman was brother of legendary film music titan Alfred Newman.  Alfred left 20th Century-Fox in 1960, but Lionel remained behind to head up the television music division.  He conducted many film scores during the 1960s, including quite af few of Jerry Goldsmith's finest.  Lionel was an exceptional conductor.

Ah...the mind gets on a tangent and won't let go till it has run its course.

Scarlet Street is an excellent movie (based on a French film whose name I can't remember) - made alongside the better Woman in the Window.  Both movies feature Eddie G. Robinson, Joan Bennett and Dan Duryea.  The problem with Scarlet Street is finding a decent copy to view - it's in the Public Domain, and most of the VHS tapes look really bad.  In the States and the UK there are quite a few DVDs of Scarlet Street, some of which are decent, but none of which are optimal.  It's Fritz Lang, so any Lang will be an interesting viewing experience.  So, yes, it's recommended with a warning about the quality you're likely to find.

I have a couple of Kritzerland CDs left, but am out of Benjamin Kritzer.  However, the good news is that the contents of all three CDs are now in my computer, so I can burn you a copy if that's all right.

Two quick posts before we head off to ladsittingland:

First, an actual "Ask BK" question for BK!

Last week, while enjoying your Burt Bacharach Album, there were a couple of artists that der B couldn't place.  How and where did you find

Shauna Hicks ("A Bacharach Love Story")

and

Melba Joyce ("My Little Red Book"),

and would you know what's become of them since?

Shauna has been on two of my albums, Bacharach and Unsung Irving Berlin (her first).  I found her in Blood Brothers - she was terrific in the show, and I met her and told her that I'd use her as soon as the right song came along.  She's done other shows since - she always seems to be working.  Somewhere along the way I seem to recall that she married Michael X. Martin (I think that's his name), one of the leads in Bed and Sofa.

Melba is on many of my albums.  She was a Lanny Meyers recommendation and she's terrific and we loved working together.  Don't know what she's up to now.

Does your head feel better now?
Title: Re:THE LITTLE PEOPLE IN MY HEAD
Post by: bk on January 12, 2005, 09:58:25 AM

I will only say that all this info is coming second hand.  It's PROBABLY correct but MGM has not released the specs on this title.  However, from what I understand, the negative was cut on the film (when the twenty minutes of cuts were made) and the laser took the reinstated footage from some kind of print they had sitting around.  It may have been deemed unacceptable to do that for the DVD release.  That's the same reason The Alamo is the shorter version.

To my mind, despite the occasional top-notch job (The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly), MGM/UA is the worst studio releasing DVDs today (the worst MAJOR).  Therefore, I don't hold out much hope for Hawaii (although the initial rumblings are that it IS anamorphically enhanced, so that's good).  Again, MGM has released no specs on the title.

My question for ASK BK day - did you see VALLEY OF THE DOLLS on its original release, do you remember which theatre?  Had you read the book?  If so, which "changes" in the story disappointed you most?

What is your favorite song from the score?

Yes, I saw it opening day or soon thereafter.  If my memory is correct I want to say I saw it at the Village in Westwood.  If it wasn't there, it may have been the Chinese.  I hadn't read the book (and still haven't).  My favorite song is the title song, which I WILL record someday.

My question to Bk-

I went to see Jason Graae in Coup de Graae last evening. He was fabulous. He sang a song about not singing "Sondheim"-Do you know who wrote the song and has it been recorded? Also-Coup de Graae should be recorded. Are you available?

I am totally available to record Coup de Graae.  The Sondheim song is by Barry Kleinbort and is available, I think, on his CD Big City Rhythm.

My question for Ask BK Day:

Dear BK,
With all your talent in the recording studio and the modern technology available today, would you be able to make Ashlee Simpson sound good?

You can make her sound acceptable.  You can help her with interpretation.  Having never heard her, I have no idea how bad she is, but one has to assume they are doing all they can with her.  Great singers are not taught to be great singers.  They have the gift.  They are taught to use the gift.  That said, there have been many songs sung by non-great singers that are favorites of mine for various reasons.

I just paid a visit to another board to see what they were saying about A Chorus Line.  The usual - "it's not relevant to my generation, I hope they change it" by these whiny kiddies who frequent those boards.  One of them said, "I want it to be fresh and relevant to my generation."  Yes!  Let's change Death of a Salesman so it's "relevant to my generation".  What a load of stupid, spoiled hooey.  I would like to think that when I was that age I was not that stupid.  I didn't want anything I saw to be relevant to my generation - I wanted to learn about everything.  And, of course, the films and shows that were relevant to my generation I hated at the time - Easy Rider, Hair, all those counter-culture movies.

How would one go about making A CHORUS LINE relevant?  I guess my question is what makes it non-relevant?  The audtiion process is basically the same....so maybe the setting would have to be changed to an AMERICAN IDOL type television show.....

"I hope I get....I hope I get.....how many phone calls do I need?"

Oh my.....yes.....how about a Guy Haines and Friends CD's of all those faux "Movie" songs from movies?  And their theme songs of course - "Two Weeks in Another Town", "Lonely Girl", "He's Movin' On", "Theme From VOD" and "You're Gonna Hear From Me" , "I'll Plant My Own Tree", and "Lose That Long Face."

Of all the songs on Patty Duke's VOD album, she really does a pretty good job on the theme song...acting wise if NOT pitch wise!

RLP - you are right Alfred Newman was King - and Lionel's television work was outstanding as well.  I loved his themes for all the Irwin Allen shows. Oh....add "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" to that list.

Feel better BK, and DR RLP, and any other DRs who are under the weather.

Hmmm, DR MBarnum, have you watched AMAZING RACE yet?

SPACE JUST IN CASE (don't read this if you didn't watch last night's show).

So what did you guys think of last night's show?  I thought it was interesting that the fast forward people would not let jonathan/victoria go for the fast forward. I assumed they would let both teams put on the underwater gear and duke it out.

How funny watching devil-boy in that space suit! :)

I figured Hayden and aaron would come in last.  THey are not good at directions and should have made sure they were right behind kendra and freddie.  I hadn't realized that they were in a definite alliance till they kept mentioning it last night.

I hate that the 2 worst teams (wrestlers/ adam.rebecca) both got the fast forwards.  And i'm also wishing that there wasn't so much bunching up.  I don't want one of the better teams to get eliminated because of one bad move.

I can't wait till next week.  I guess it's almost over. With only 6 teams left (the finale usually has 3 or 4 teams and 2 hours).  So potentially only a few more weeks!

I've been to a Hooter's once.  I and about 3 friends of mine had congregated back in Northern Kentucky on a Friday afternoon before our 30th High School reunion and we went to a Hooter's on the Ohio river in Newport. KY, for lunch...with views of downtown Cincinnati.  The waitresses were mostly cute college girls in tight t-shirt, who were sweet and as vaguely witty as college girls can get, and who get points for tolerating a bunch of guys in their late forties flirting with them.  It must get old for them.

The place certainly wasn't a "guy" hang-out.  There were women there and families.  The food was mostly battered and fried. And wholly forgettable.

Just an extra-long leg of the race, like the one they recently split into two episodes.

re: non-eliminations

There have been two so far this year.  There used to be three per race, but last season they upped it to four.

Are you sure there haven't been 3 so far?  We had the grandparents.  And last night.  And wasn't there another team somewhere in there?

re: DR Jrand's question about them not letting 2 teams try for the fast forward.

Well, normally it's the first team that gets it, has it (and more than one team can try).  BUt in this case they had to go underwater.  And the guy running it said that only one team could be underwater at a time.  So jonathan/victoria would have had to wait for adam/rebecca to come out of the water.  And since if they came up out of the water, they would have had the clue, there was no reason for the other team to wait.

However it would have been interesting if they had waited.  Because like DR Jed said, Adam came out of the water.  So technically jon/vic would have been able to go down.

But Rebecca already had the clue.  It would have been fun!  Plus i dislike both those teams, so i wouldn't have cared who had lost! :)

I think generational mutilation is a good thing.  Remember that boring ole opera, what was it called?  Le Boheem or something like that, who cares.  No one wants to see a spooty opera these days.  But!  then they made RENT! so that a whole new generation (which apparently consists entirely of drug addicts and queens with AIDS) could identify with Verdi's charming story of a bank robbery.

I really like Kristin Chenoweth.  Interesting she will be going up against herself (since she is on the West Wing too).

DR Jennifer - Kristen's "double exposure" occurred to me this morning, too.  My husband and I have tickets to see her perform with the Cincinnati Pops this coming Sunday.   Keep your fingers crossed, because she cancelled her performance with them this past Sunday, promising that she'd be here on the 16th.

Shauna and Michael have a new baby, born in June or July, 2004.  She and Jeff Harnar have a pops symphony show, Mickey & Judy, which premiered last July in San Diego, with 12 orchestrations by yours truly.  I think I'm getting a couple of things to fix for them before the next concert.

I love Melba Joyce!  Her "Last Blues Song" on BK's Shakespeare album is one of my favourite things.

I've just taken a pan of southwest cornbread out of the oven (same cornbread recipe I posted here a week or so back, but I added diced onion, chiles, pimientos and jalapeno peppers).  I also took a quart of Brunswick stew out of the freezer and it's simmering in a pot.

AMAZING RACE.

re: non-eliminationsAre you sure there haven't been 3 so far?  We had the grandparents.  And last night.  And wasn't there another team somewhere in there?

Nope, last night was only the second non-elimination leg there has been so far.  It will be interesting to see how much money the other teams cough up this time for Aaron and Hayden since they are heavy competition and the race is getting tighter.

Last week, DR Jenifer pointed out that Jonathan has always passed up on any of the physical challanges.  I hadn't paid attention to that fact but last night really brought it to the fore when he decided to pass up on the wall climb.  This weakness is what will eventually trip him up and elimiate his ass at some point when he is forced to perform a roadblock.  Can't wait for that!

And again, Kris and Jon had me rooting for them.  'Specially when Kris was making her "Lucy Stomping The Grapes" Face.  She is a cutie!

I just had a most fascinating drive in my motor car.  I decided to go to the Apple Store at the Grove to get a carrying case for my Powerbook, since I will be traveling soon.  So, I do what I always do, take Laurel Canyon.  The first interesting thing is that just before I get to Mulholland, there on the right is that house that fell down in the rain (photos were posted here).  More interesting is the For Sale sign in front of it.  One wonders if it was there before or after the house fell down.  Then I get to Mulholland and they've closed off the rest of Laurel Canyon.  So, I went left and went to Nichols Canyon.  Driving through the canyon just cemented the fact that I would never ever live there - the street is still wet, mud is everywhere, pot holes abound and several trees were down.  Horrible.  Then I finally get to the Grove.  This is my second time walking down Main Street and I just hate it.  That and the fact that they are thinking it's hip to play Ella and Dean and Frank and Perry.  Better than playing now music, but I just think it's funny.  Everything old is new again, as Mr. Peter Allen said so prophetically.

Okay, so I bought an iPod.  Now, what the HELL do I do with the thing.  I hear that as soon as I hook it up it will automatically import the entire contents of my iTunes library as well as my various and sundried playlists.  If that's so, then what about when I add tracks to the library - does it automatically just import those tracks when I next hook it up?

Then, I know I can't take the canyon home, so I get on Highland.  You'd think it was the worst rush hour traffic you'd ever seen - and this is at 12:40.  Hopeless.  I'm talking that the traffic was backed up all the way to Melrose.  I finally cut over to Cahuenga and that was fine, except for the idiots in their cars driving like utter morons.

I was in a show being performed 'In the Round" and they had bussed in the senior citizens for this particular performance. For some reason, these people seemed to think they were watching TV as they would loudly comment on everything going on, and seemd oblivious to the fact the  we could hear them.

My character was introduced as a nurse in the 2nd act, but in the third act I was now part of the household and dressed in  "civvies" rather than the nurses uniform from Act 2

Mr. Sr Citizen (at top of lungs) "Who's the woman in the red dress?"

Mrs. SC (just as loudly)  "That's the nurse"

Mr. SC "Nah, it can't be, the nurse didn't have such a big ass!"

Well i guess I am going crazy. Cause i totally thought this was the 3rd non-elim.

I think perhaps the others will give them money.  But normally teams just beg for money.  It was just that last time they were in africa, and the grandparents could not bring themselves to take from the less fortunate.

It's funny but when you said the first part, i thought you were going to mention the fact that he did an easy task (stomping on grapes) instead of letting his wife do that.  It made no sense!

I wonder why he didn't do the physical rock climbing.  Anyhow, he passed 2 other teams by doing the rafting.  So it didn't hurt him.

But i'm sure he could have done the mountain climbing. I mean all the women did it.  It was weird though how he mentioned he couldn't do it.  WHat was that about?

Embarrassing onstage (well, for a while anyway) moment:

In the DrElmore-directed community theatre production of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown I was playing Lucy in dress rehearsal.  I suppose we had a small audience.  At the end of the opening number, Lucy says, "If only you weren't so wishy-washy!" and crosses from downstage right to downstage left to exit.  Well, I stepped offstage and fell into the first row of seats.  All I could hear was Elmore saying, "Oh my God, Oh my God!"  And all I could think was that I had to get up into the light so he could see I wasn't dead.  They taped my ankle and we started over.  That ankle still swells.

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from Fairfax, VA!  -What a difference 100 miles of I-95 can make meteorologically speaking.  When I left Richmond, it was just breaking 70 degrees, and there was a nice breeze.  As I headed northward, the temp started to drop, but it was a beautiful day for a drive - great winter sunlight.  By the time I reached Fairfax, it was/is in the lower 50s and there is some light fog in the air, near the ground.  Very strange.  I almost thought I had time-warped or something - it just didn't look like 3:30 in the afternoon... More like 6:00 in the morning... The foggy, foggy dew...  In any case...

It was a gorgeous day for a drive, and even though there were lots of cars on the road, most everyone seemed to be behaving and driving the speed limit too!

Most embarrassing stage moment?

Well, I remember going out for my entrance as Judge Thatcher in BIG RIVER, looked down, and I was still wearing my bedroom shoes/moccasins rather than changing into my lace-up stage shoes. Had to go through the entire opening number in those until I could dash back to the dressing room and jump into the right shoes.

I'm not sure anyone but me noticed.

Something strange department:  tried to log on here a minute ago, and got a weird Windows prompt telling me the page could not be read offline.  Well, hmmm...I was online.  So I pressed the "connect" button, and it gave me the last version I had read, which was up through about page 4.  So I pressed refresh, and no new posts appeared, which I found odd.  So I went to several other sites, which all loaded correctly, and when I returned here, there were the subsequent pages.  Isn't that peculiar?  It's never happened before.

Embarrassing stage moments:  I believe I have previously relayed to my two (count 'em) embarrassing incidents when I was playing Bill Sykes in Oliver!  In #1, my dog wouldn't depart the stage with me, and the entire audience heard an unfortunate expletive I uttered under my breath.  #2 was the closing night of the show (thankfully) when my retractable knife malfunctioned when I stabbed Nancy and I actually ended up really stabbing her in her lip, which erupted (literally) with a huge spray of blood.  The audience "oohed" and "aahed" and burst into applause at the sight of this stupendous special effect.

For those of you who need sunshine department:  Get some CDs of the Brasilian singer/songwriter Joyce.  I have been listening to her all day (she's one of my all-time faves).  Her voice is aural sunshine, and her music is gorgeous.

While listening to the radio on the way up, I heard some major radio-related news.  Well, at least local radio market major.  WHFS, a once major radio station in DC changed formats at Noon today.  With no warning, advance word, etc.  It went from Alternative Rock to a Hispanic format.  At 12:01PM!

I started flipping around the dial, and sure enough a bunch of the afternoon drive shows were talking about the sudden changeover.  When WHFS started back in the late-80s, it was a true Indie-Rock station.  They played R.E.M. and Green Day before they were R.E.M. and Green Day.  The signal was notoriously weak, but that just added to it's appeal.  They eventually became more of a major market player, and got a bigger tower.  Unfortunately, as with all media outlets, it kept changing it's format every few months.  However, the radio station sponsored an annual "HFS-tival" - a day long concert featuring lots of rock groups.  They even had one last year.  I wonder if that will continue with the new format?  ;)

In any case, that's the news...

*When I started college in Richmond, one of the dorms was considered "special" since they could actually pick up the signal for WHFS during the late night hours.  Of course, that's only if the wind was blowing in the right direction.  ;)

Someone else's embarrassing moment:  I may have told this story a long time ago, too, but it's hilarious.  I was playing the Grand Inquisitor in The Lark.  As some/most of you probably know, the GI just sits there for an hour and a half, and then completely dominates the last half-hour or so of the play with one gigantic monologue after another.  His last monologue cues the henchman to enter to drag Joan off for her appointment with the barbecue.  :)  Well, anyway, one night I got through my huge speech and......no henchman.  So I repeat my cue.  Still no one.  So I punt and said some sort of line that cued the people holding Joan to just take her offstage.  Ready for the punchline?  The henchman had been backstage, using an eyebrow pencil to draw hair on his chest for his big entrance and hadn't heard his cue.

RE: Shauna Hicks - Love her!  I played for a mini-concert that she gave a couple of years ago at American University - her alma mater.  I haven't really talked with her in years, but I still get the occasional card telling me what she's up to.  Her show, "Shauna Hicks and Her 60's Chicks" is lots of fun.  Although, I don't think she's done it lately, but I think there was a sequel of sorts.  And as DR elmore noted, she and Jeff Harnar have been doing a Mickey & Judy show the past couple of years.

RE: A CHORUS LINE - From what I've heard, the only "major" changes they may make for the upcoming production will be in the orchestrations, and most of that will consists of streamlining the conductor/keyboard and piano/Rhodes/celeste books so that the conductor does not have to play and conduct at the same time.  Personally, I'm hoping they go to two keyboard players in the pit. ;)

...Otherwise, the piece will remain set in 1975.

Question for bk - How complete is your recording of "Godspell" and how close is it to the original recording of the score.  I realize the "sound" was a bit updated, but is the material the same?  (I realize Beautiful City was added)

The reason why I ask is that in the class I teach, we're doing student directed mini-musicals and  we have the original score, but I'd like to give the student the most complete recording that is available as a resource and I don't want to get stuck transcribing music!!

DR Matthew - I think I can help you out here...  BK's Godspell is complete.  *I'm always amazed that there is no underscoring in Godspell.

If you want a more traditional version of Godspell, get the one that was released on Jay Records out of London.  It was a studio album with Mr. Schwartz himself at the piano.  I've seen it released in a standard "import" format - meaning a bit higher priced than normal - but I've also seen it released with a generic cover but at a budget-price.

RE: Hooter's - I've been a few times.  I do like the wings.  As for the "scenery"... hmmm...  I usually go when I'm on the road and want something "dependable".  And most cities have at least one - plus an Applebee's and a Chili's.  Decisions, decisions.

iPod users: This thing comes with a software CD, but I remember being told that because I already have iTunes in the machine I really shouldn't have to use it - is this true?

True.  -Unless there's been some sort of software update.  You could always put the disc in the drive and see what happens.  If the software is already on your computer, then the screen prompts should tell you so.

-Or you could just call Mr. Mac Man.

I've just taken a pan of southwest cornbread out of the oven (same cornbread recipe I posted here a week or so back, but I added diced onion, chiles, pimientos and jalapeno peppers).  I also took a quart of Brunswick stew out of the freezer and it's simmering in a pot.

When you feel like crap, it's mandatory you pamper yourself!

Hmm... The cornbread sounds good!

As for the Brunswick Stew... Lima beans or no lima beans?  Chicken or other meat?  Tomatoes?

I only ask since I have witnessed the great "Brunswick Stew Wars" from time to time here in Richmond.  It's usually between Brunswick, VA and Brunswick, GA - although NC and SC also join the fray every now and then.  There's a local canned brand in Richmond, Mrs. Fearnow's.  Not bad when fresh is not available.  I used to send cans of it to a friend who was working in the middle of nowhere. That and bags of Utz's Old Bay Potato Chips.  A little slice of home.

OH! And that recording also has some of the lyric changes and updates that Mr. Schwartz has written over the years.  Most of them are small, but one of the Philosophers in the Tower of Babel opening is changed - a new philosopher and, conseqently, new text.  The latest set of MTI parts are supposed to have incorporated them, but some sets have the new lyrics, some don't.

I'm back from the morning portion of the Crazy For You tour load-in.  We left at about 1:00 p.m. and I had lunch at KFC.  I came home, caught up on all the posts (a few comments to follow) and will (hopefully) take a bit of a nap before heading back to the theatre for the 6:00 p.m. call.  I had to polish shoes this morning and spray vodka on the girls' costumes.  I've never polished shoes before in my life...ever!  I've always had tennis shoes or dress shoes that I just never polished.  And I've never worked for a tour that required their men's shoes to be polished.  I hope they didn't expect a perfect shine, but I figure that I'm not the only one to EVER polish the shoes, so that somewhere down the line (next town, maybe) someone who knows how to polish the shoes will do a really good job...one hopes. ::)

I have a couple of Kritzerland CDs left, but am out of Benjamin Kritzer.  However, the good news is that the contents of all three CDs are now in my computer, so I can burn you a copy if that's all right.

So Bruce, have you ever thought to release an offical Guy Haines CD of all of the Benjamin Kritzer songs?  You could take all of the songs that were on the three Benjamin mini-CDs, make one CD and release it to the general public as its own CD (not specifically available only with the purchase of the books).  I think that that would be pretty cool! ;D Just my opinion...that I assume would be shared by many. ::)

I work in the Acqusitions Department of the Timberland Regional Library (http://www.trlib.org/) and part of my job is to return defective or damaged materials...up to a certain age.  Usually, if it's caught within six months of the invoice date, we can get a no-charge replacement from the original vendor.  The problem is that patrons don't always tell the people out in the branches that there's a problem with an item and it could be years (literally) before it's turned in as a defect.  By then it's too late.  The item can only be tossed (or recycled).

I am now going to take a little nap so that I can be rested for tonight's performance of Crazy For You.  Even though I'm not performing, even just helping with the costume people can be somewhat hectic.  Rarely is it very easy.  It's not always difficult, but there usually isn't much down time...or even time to sit down.  So, Laters! Grant and I have thought about it, but what would you call it really?  Also, I'd want to add a few songs that I wanted to do but that we didn't get to.

I called Apple, we downloaded the necessary software from their website (even though, from the way it happened I'm assuming it was already on my computer), then hooked up the little machine and it imported the entire contents of my iTunes library (about seven hours worth of music) in about twelve seconds.  I've got my cheesy little iPod earphones in and boy does this thing work well.  Quality is excellent.  I will have to get a proper pair of headphones, and I now know I should have gotten the car kit.  I'll go tomorrow and get them, plus a docking station and a remote.  Oh, boy, I'm getting with it, I tell you.

Hiya, folks!

I'm going to the opening of an art show at a gallery on W. 25th tomorrow eve, with my pal Elmore! His friend is the artist of the exhibition. Haven't been to a gallery show opening in the longest time...

Where can a girl get a Botox injection in this burg? I'm beginning to FROWN again... makes me look short-tempered. Don't mind BEING short-tempered, as long as I look mild and vacant most of the time...

And I had the nicest interview last night with a theater writer whom I haven't seen - oh, let's see... - maybe since 1978 or so. Nice reunion, fun reminiscences. He is one brilliant dude, I must say -- remembers EVERYTHING. And a mellow, eager, totally youthful personality - even though he must be nearly as old as I am by now. So, anyway, it was a swell way to end yesterday.

Lookin' for warmer weather, I tell you, here in Noo Yawk. What's LA doing?

Well...

I use to bake at all hours when Keith traveled.

I have never cared for German chocolate cake.  It just doesn't seem like real chocolate to me, plus it has coconut which I can’t eat unless it is toasted.  Peanut butter cookies are one of my favorites but for some reason I rarely bake them.

Excellent advice!!   :)

Bruce, you could use all 4 time periods in your new book-- Make it an epoch and give Edna Ferber a run for her money, OR use lots of dream sequnces.  OR try the "Intolerance" approach and go back and forth between the time peiods to illustrate how some things are pretty much the same through the ages.

Question of the day:

For anyone who has ever performed on stage.

What was the most embarassing or strangest thing that ever happened to you while performing in front of an audience?

The most embarassing thing was going up on my lines during my very first speech as Northumberland in Henry IV Part One.  I blurted out my first few lines and then went completely blank.  I stood completely still and started to flop sweat big time.  In desperation, I leaned towards our Henry IV with my hand outstretched, hoping he woud help me recover.  He responded by leaning in and giving me a small shrug.  Thankfully, just before I was about to call out "Line!", the stage manager hissed out enough of my speech that it all came roaring back to me and I was able to continue.  Oy, what a bad night that was!

Never been to Hooters.

I've already recounted on previous occasions my two most embarrassing stage disasters. To recap:
1. Falling off the stage during opening night of THE DYBBK at the National Arts Center in Ottawa. (And uttering a profanity that was not used in 19th century Poland.)
2. Holding onto an audience member and whispering, "Move, Victor!" as I was making an exit in a blackout at the Factory Theater Lab in Toronto. (I thought he was the actor leading me off-stage at audience level.)
The obvious contributing factor to both these mishaps is that my pupils don't expand as they're supposed to when it goes from light to darkness. Consequently, I'm almost BLIND in the dark - or when it suddenly gets dark at any rate.  8)

I just realized that I forgot to sign off and HHW was in the bg as I was writing. I'm STILL writing. I took a grocery shopping (DD returns tomorrow - must get some food in the house) and hot chocolate break earlier. With my hot chocolate I had the worst scone I've ever tasted - left most of it. Not at Peets, not multi-grain. This thing they called a scone was so sweet I almost vomited on the ground.

Scones need only to be made of flour and milk. No sugar or butter is necessary. I am talking here of ENGLISH scones. Very simple to make.

Having sweetness in a scone is just not on. Add cream and jam for sweetness later or just butter. Real butter!
