Title: I, POD

Well, you've read the notes, you've digested the notes, you've contemplated the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home with their iPods.  To it, I say.

Sigh!

The trouble with being sick is that I get my sleep patterns all confused with long naps.

I'm wide awake, yet I must contemplate the reality of going to work several hours hence should I feel increasingly better than I've felt the last few hours.

I've eaten well, I've pampered, I've snoozed, and I'm doing a vapor shot as I post this.  (Breathe Right's "Vapor Shot!" is a w-o-n-d-e-r-f-u-l thing to have...a styrofoam cup that you fill with hot water, drop a a wonderfully potent tablet into, cap with the specially designed lid, and then breathe, breathe, breathe incredible vapors that open you up and tingle).

I taped, while watching, "Candide"....and I loved it!  Kristen Chenoweth is a rare jewel in the theatrical firm-uh-mint!  Her voice stuns and astounds me almost all the time!  And she is graced with impeccable comic timing.

I think she and Reese Witherspoon are fraternal twin sisters separated at both, and wonder if Reese has any singing talent.

ABC's "Lost" was fascinating, I thought.  I sometimes think I'm dreaming it.

Because of something Shannon said to her brother, Boone, in last week's episode, I was stunned to learn that he is, in fact, straight...and that he has been in love with her (not a blood relative, but a half-sister by marriage).  Last week she made a pissy comment to him about whether someone was his "new boyfriend."  I'm guessing that was a red herring, of sorts.

Well, I've watched two episodes of Bravo's "Queer Eye for the Straight Girl". and I have to say I think it sucks.

The three flaming queens and one lipstick lesbian call themselves the "Gal Pals."  It's a not-so-hot imitation of the male counterpart....and it doesn't seem as intimate in the dealings between the "client" and the so-called experts.  I like "Honey," the lesbian, but the three guys seem way too "West Hollywood" shallow/phony to be credible.

I've found a children's show, fake-claymation, called Jo Jo's Circus...they're doing the limbo, singing a cute little song.  I'm glad that decent kids shows these days still include music...sometimes it's actually really good music too.

Good morning, all!

It's to be a very warm day in Manhattan and, supposedly, the temperature will drop the next couple of days after all colds, flus, and other malaises have run rampant for the next couple of days.  I have to run to the post office, mail two packages, and pick up a money order.  I'd like to get a haircut this afternoon to lok spiffy for my evening with Miss PennyO.  Perhaps we can settle on an HHW date for her show.

TOD:  Jack Benny
         Lily Tomlin

I think I, Pod, the book, should be the autobiography of one of the stars of Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

The Village is only 108 minutes long?  I thought it was longer than that when I saw it last summer.  I liked it very much though I was able to guess what the "surprise twist" was even before the movie started.  Bryce Dallas Howard was wonderful and I'm looking forward to her doing Mary Queen of Scots (maybe reteamed with Sigourney as Elizabeth.)

We went to see the Village with another couple.  After the movie (which DH claimed to be  contemplating chewing off his leg to escape from)  the other wife asked . "But where was the twist?" We explained and she said,  "Oh! I assumed that from the beginning!"

I think the problem with M. Night is that  "The Sixth Sense" was so good and had such a  great twist in it that he thinks ALL his movies have to be that way

And I do wish he would stop SHOWING us the monster

IMHO both The Village and the "alien" one with Mel Gibson (the name escapes me now, senior moment attack)  would have been better if the monsters were only hinted at  - never actually seen

Other than the previously mentioned Bill Irwin, I really can't think of any funny person today who is funny in the way of the classic funny guys.  Ellen DeGeneres did some funny physical schtick on her sitcom.  And going a ways back there were John Belushi, Gilda Radner and most of the SCTV gang.  But there seems to be a drought of clowns, these days.

But there are people I think that are funny, though in a modern sense:
Lily Tomlin
David Letterman
My Ex-Pretend Girlfriend, Amy Sedaris
Jerry Seinfeld
Billy Crystal

TOD, there isn't much that appeals to me for current funny people. I don't "get" Jim Carrey (he was actually much funnier when he was a nobody on In Living Color), Adam Sandler or Ben Stiller and I REALLY DON'T GET David Spade. He brings out the worst in me. I want to reach into the television and slap his smug, snotty little face (rant over).

Funny people, Jack Benny, Lily Tomlin, Bill Irwin, all mentioned previously.

I'm seeing Little Women next week and Lone Star Love the week after that. LSL is a musical version of Merry Wives of Windsor set in Civil War Texas. We are still trying to arrange a viewing of After the Ball. It's difficult with Anthony's schedule. It's closing soon so we MUST see it. I would go on my own but Anthony wants to see the show (he knows and has worked with the choreographer, Lisa Schriver, also a friend of DR Larry) so we needs must work his schedule into the process. And then in March we East Coast HKs will see the wonderful Penny O. My calendar is filling up!

True.  The alien movie, Signs, had me on the edge of my seat throughout most of the film (it fed into my actual life long fear of alien invasion--good thing I wasn't living in 1938!)  But that last ten minutes was something from another movie and a bad one at that.  If the only glimpse we ever had of the alien was from the news video clip, the sense of dread that the movie built up would have played much better.

Dan-the-Man, sorry to hear about your breakup with your Ex-Pretend Girlfriend, Amy Sedaris  ;) When did it happen? Was it difficult? Was she devasted? You're not referring to her with nasty names so I guess the breakup was pleasant. Since she's in New York and you're outside of Philly, I guess it was the distance that broke you up, huh?

I caught that too, and I'm with you, DR RLP (sorry, once I have name association, it sticks....).  I had sort of thought that it was a dream, and once they got to the naughty, quasi-incestuous bits, I said it out loud to the DP.  But the comment from last week was most puzzling.  And, I have a feeling, closer to the character's truth.

But, oh, those eyes!

Ah, yes, the TOD:

Funny people of yesteryear:
Jack Benny
Totie Fields
Joan Rivers (Yes, she belongs in this category)

Funny people of today:
Dame Edna
Rita Rudner
Jon Stewart
Freddie Roman
Mal Z. Lawrence

Once a borscht-belter, always a borscht-belter.

Aside from David Spade, other so-called comedians I never "got:"  Norm Crosby, Foster Brooks, Jack Carter.  (And I did like Spade's "Hollywood Minute" bits on SNL, but it was downhill from there.)

Classic comic performers whom I know and love only through their recordings:

Tom Lehrer, Allan Sherman, Flanders & Swann, the brothers Smothers and Marx, Jack Benny, Bergen & McCarthy, Don Ameche & Francis Langford (as the Bickersons), Burns & Allen, Abbot & Costello.

Just plain old funny without being "edgy" has kind of gone the way of the dodo nowadays, but Bill Irwin and Bill Cosby are both masters of the fine art of generating laughter. In an entirely different vein, the little that I've seen of Eddie Izzard has had me in stitches, and I love George Carlin's linguistic observations (his political ranting much less so).

Oh! Almost forgot the most brilliantly funny TV characters of the 90s, IMHO... the Animaniacs!

Congratulations on your play and the reading DRMS!!

IPOD....hmmmmmmmmmmmm......electronics are wonderful.

I enjoyed CANDIDE very much.  Yes there was much SCHTICK - much of it unnecessary, but it was a concept from beginning to end, and the music was so glorious that it survived.

Kristen was so very funny and in glorious voice as Cunegonde.  I enjoyed Paul Groves as Candide although is costume did him no favors.  Patti LuPone was Patti and made the most of The Old Lady.  A couple of staging things bothered me A LOT.  In "Oh Happy We" - Cunegonde and Candide sang their completely opposite views of marriage TO each other.  And in "I Am So Easily Assimilated" it was established early on that the four amigos couldn't lift The Old Lady even after many attempts....then at the end of the song TWO of them picked her up and moved her downstage.

I didn't care for Donald Trump - and the very LARGE man who sang the Dutch Captain (and other parts) was off-tempo in "Bon Voyage".

Hmmmmmmmm.....

Groucho Marx, Jack Benny, Lucille Ball - never FAILED to make me laugh, NEVER.

Red Skelton and Allan Sherman - so funny.

Nowadays....hmmmmmmm......  Eddie Izzard, yes.  I don't know....sometimes I see a comic who makes me laugh, but not often.  I do agree that Barry Humphries/Dame Edna is wonderful.

I am distressed at how easily some new TV actress is dubbed the "new" Lucille Ball - everyone from Kelly Ripa to the unfunny Debra Messing, and how they accept the accolade as their due.

I think if some of the people on television were as funny as their writers or even half as funny as they think they are - we might have something.

I guessed THE SIXTH SENSE within 15 minutes of the movie's start, but his next one UNBREAKABLE was my favorite of his films, and it made the least money of any of them. I loved that film.

I felt so cheated with SIGNS that I didn't even watch or rent THE VILLAGE. I may watch it when it tops up on a premium movie channel like HBO, but I won't pay out another dime for his films.

I knew Elisabeth Rohm was leaving the show, and they'd been leading up to her leaving/being fired all season by her being at odds with the DA's office over their tactics in winning cases or the stands they took in various matters.

The fact that she declared herself a lesbian at fade-out was astounding to me. In four years of her being on the show, I had NO CLUE her character was a lesbian. Maybe that's a good thing.

I'm not sorry she's gone, however. She never quite got into the rhythm of the acting on LAW & ORDER. (BTW, I liked her fine in the first season of ANGEL.)

It had more to do with my missing her guest host stints on the Late Show last fall.  She said it showed a distinct lack of support on my part.  I explained that I never watch The Late Show, no matter who is on.  She began comparing me to Matthew Broderick, saying that he never misses SJP's tv appearances.  I told her that I am not Matthew Broderick.  And she said, "You're telling me?" and stormed out.  We haven't spoke to each other since.  She left one of her prosthetic legs behind.  I haven't sent it back in the hope that she might call and ask for it, but it's been months so I guess she's moved on to other things.

MattH & Vixmom:  yes, that parting line was a complete non sequitur, if you ask me, which is why Betsy and I have appropriated it for any and all conversational reasons.  Some sample repartee from our household:

Me:  "Would you bring me some coffee, honey?"
Betsy:  "Is this because I'm a lesbian?"

or, even better:

Betsy:  "Did you close the garage door?"
Me:  "Is this because I'm a lesbian?"

I agree MattH that Elizabeth never quite gelled on L&O.  Betsy's comment last night was "bring back Carey Lowell or Angie Harmon!"  And, also, when she saw the preview featuring the new girl on the block, "Can't they hire anyone older than 25?"  :)

TOD:  I second the motion about Ellen DeGeneres.  Betsy & I still laugh about her appearance several years ago on Rosie's show, where she did an hilarious riff about having a kid.  One of the tabloids had reported she was pregnant, which she said was a big surprise to her, and that she now had so much to do.  "I have to buy baby things, hire a nanny--except, you know Hillary Clinton said it takes a village.  So I had to find a village.  I found one--it's more of an enclave, really.  And it turns out they're nomads.  So everyday when I come home from work, I have to go searching for them."  It was truly hysterical.

You obviously haven't heard of the supersecret CIA division, IdOp, which, instead of surreptitiously giving people LSD, would secretly perform Freudian analysis on them.  It was, sadly, not much of a success, other than helping J. Edgar Hoover with a certain cross-dressing fetish.

I am an M. Night Shyamalan (sp?) fan, but I had different reactions to some of his films from the rest of you.

I liked, but wasn't blown away by, "The Sixth Sense."  Once the gimmick is known, there's little reward in seeing it again for me.

"Unbreakable," however, improves on each viewing.  I wasn't much into it the first time I watched it, but I've seen it two more times and it's wonderful.

"Signs" resonated with me from start to finish.

The way the director established the terror the family falls prey to, and the wonderful sense of claustrophobia that pervades even some of the outdoors scenes, marks him as an extraordinary talent.

I have zero problems seeing the monster because it was evil in intent and it was totally essential for its presence so that Mel's character could put all the pieces together that saved his sanity.  "Swing away, Merle" was one of them.  His little girl's obsession with pure water was another.  And the son's asthma saved his life from the poisonous gas.

What I couldn't grasp is how a priest could have a family -- it was well-established that one of his former parishioners wanted to do a confessional with him.  What church, other than Catholic (in which priests are celibate), has priests who wear the clerical collar and hear confessions?  I'd be delighted to learn there is such a faith...but it has eluded me, thus far.

I, Pod, am up.  No blue sky as of yet, but I can see it trying to peek through.  I'm going to try to return these speakers before lunch and hopefully there won't be much traffic.

Most of my funny favorites, both new and old, have been mentioned.   While I love Chaplin and Keaton, this topic isn't really about comic actors, but comics - those who did live shows of their acts, like Benny, and those types.  Of the modern people there is no one I much care for except Ellen (by modern, I'm not including Crystal and Mal Z., since they are born of another era) - maybe I should say post-modern.  I just don't find many of these post-modern comics funny.

I have watched it many times after knowing the gimmick and I enjoyed at as much, but now, from a slightly different perspective as I know something that the character himself does not.

I agree completely.  I received the DVD as a gift after seeing it in the theatre and wasn't enthused about seeingit again, but for politeness sake viewed it again with the giftgiver and found I liked it better the second time, and on subsequent viewings  I see more and more I like about it

The monster itself (to my eyes) was too tabloidy, too rubbery/fake looking. Now I would have had no problem with the characters in the movie seeing the aliens, just let us have reaction shots and keep the guy in the rubber suit off camera

I always thing the scariest thing is the thing you DON"T see

I believe the Episcopalians refer to their ministers as priests and address them as Father, and as far as I know, all Protestant religions allow their ministers to marry & procreate.

Also, while I am not aware of  confession as requirement in any of the Protestant religions, there is always the option to make a private confession to your minister, besides in this particular case, (unless I misremember) the person wanting to make the confession was confessing his transgressions against Mel Gibson's character   :)

That is a possibility. I am an Episcopalian and have  never encountered a confessional (although that probably doesn't mean a thing).  I got the impression in that scene between the girl and Gibson that he was telling her he was no longer a priest and, thus, not able to hear confessions.

As you said, though, it may have been intended as a means of her unloading her guilt prior to what she perceived as apocalypse.

SPOILER ALERT

My reading on that scene was that since he had lost his faith in God he couldn't offer the assurance of God's forgiveness and mercy to someone else.

I don't think he was defrocked, I think he had just walked away from his pulpit in despair, because at the end he is wearing his collar again.

I saw Alias last night.  I also saw Lost last night.

LOST COMMENT (don't read if you haven't watched it yet).

I'm not sure how I felt about the brother/sister revelations last night.  All these weeks we had no reason to believe that they didn't have the same parents.  So watching them have sex, was just a bit shocking.

It was interesting to see the chase/death scene turn out to not be real.

I'm sure I've seen Lily Tomlin on West Wing this year.  Although her part is small and she isn't on that much.

Maybe no Alias comments, cause nothing too earth shattering happened.  Even TAR without an elimination didn't get too many comments.

We need earth shattering events to comment on I guess. :)

Btw, I don't like the new opening for the show.  The names go by too fast.  I can't read them.  And I like seeing pictures of the cast, as opposed to merely pics of Jennifer Garner.

Comics and comedians of old:  Benny, Groucho, Skelton come to mind...

Today:  Eddie Izzard, Bill Maher, and Al "The Pub Landlord" Murray (The only comedian I've gone and seen onstage...he hasn't caught on over here and his humour may be too intrinsically British for some...but he's very, very funny)

Funny people and performers:  David Letterman, The two guys from South Park (The smartest satire on TV), Larry David, Rowan Atkinson (mostly Black Adder)...from the past:  What ever happened to George Gobel, who still had one of the best lines ever:  "You ever feel like the whole world's a tuxedo and you're a pair of brown shoes."?

Funny writers:  again, the guys from South Park; Ben Elton; Richard Curtis; Oscar Wilde, Terry Pratchett

Some comic radio shows:  Just A Minute; Sorry, I Haven't A Clue; My Word

I enjoyed CANDIDE last night although, I've now seen the show three times...and none of them have ever been the same.  Is there a definitive version of this thing?  I think the one I enjoyed the most was one I saw at Theatre Three in Dallas back in the seventies.  I don't know which version they were on then.

I actually enjoyed the documentary on Bill Irwin that aired here after Candide even more.  Another very funny man.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I guess I caught up on my sleep from the other night, my post-baking sleep - or lack thereof.

-Did that make sense at all?!?!?

This morning after getting up, I headed down to the kitchen to help my Dad get his car loaded up.  He had prepared lunch for his office at Health and Human Services (HHS), as a Thank You for all their well-wishes during his surgery and since his surgery.  My Mom was rolling lumpia last night, and there's enough extra filling leftover to roll a couple dozen more.  Well, for me to roll a few dozen more - I'll probably bring them into the show tonight.  If they make it out of the kitchen.  And if I actually ever get back down to the kitchen and start rolling them.  Rolling, rolling, rolling...

After my Dad got everything loaded up, he headed over to my Mom's work to pick up some more food.  -The lumpia were being fried up in my Mom's work kitchen.

My Dad also made some coleslaw here - to go along with some fried chicken and ribs.  Making coleslaw is not that difficult, but he was making enough for about 20 people, possibly more.  He likes the really chopped up kind, so he used the food processor to make it.  However, we only have a 3-cup food processor here at home.  A gallon and a half of coleslaw made in a 3-cup food processor.. you do the math.  ;)

So... After cleaning up bits of shredded cabbage and carrots off the counters and the floor and the rugs and the coffee maker(?!?!?), I finally had my own brunch, and now I'm here....

Exciting, huh?

Until then, I thought Boone was gay.

I didn't remember the sister's comment.  So I had no opinion on Boone's sexual orientation.

It's weird, but I wasn't sure how I felt watching them in bed together.  We don't even know how long their parents were married, or how long they lived together as brother and sister.

I also wasn't sure if we were supposed to be confused or disgusted.

It was definitely interesting though.

Love both of these shows.  I bought DH the Complete BA on DVD a couple of years ago and it had two "one offs' I don't think were ever aired here, Black Adder's Christmas & one about the Round Heads & Calvinists

We have a bunch of "Sorry, I Haven't A Clue" on cassette.  DH is British and whenever one his friends comes over for a visit (usually we get a Brit houseguest or two every Thanksgiving) we demand a cassette of this radio show as payment for room & board   :)

Ooh, I must pull out my Stan Freberg CD and listen to St. George and the Dragonnet.

So, the traffic this morning was worse than yesterday and last night.  I thought Laurel Canyon might be open for the drive back and it was and the traffic was backed up to Sunset.  Isn't that funny?  What's funny is that Nichols Canyon, a mere half-mile east of Laurel, was totally empty and I breezed home from there.  I exchanged my speakers and bought the ones I first had chosen and got talked out of by a salesperson.  This salesperson talked me into buying cheaper speakers?  Whaddup with that, dawg?  Anyway, I went with my first choice.  I unpacked them when I got home and put in the batteries and did everything I was supposed to.  This unit is quite attractive and it folds up for traveling.  Obviously it comes in the folded position and I swear to you, dear readers, you need a Bachelor's Degree in something to figure out how it opens.  This is because there is a diagram sheet with no printing on it, just silly little diagrams which have NO CONTEXT.  I called The Apple Store, got a manager on the phone and he told me to put the unit face down, with the plugs facing away from me and PUSH.  I PUSHED.  Nothing happened.  I PUSHED some more.  Nothing happened.  He couldn't help me further.  I called Altec Lansing and they helped me instantly. You didn't have to PUSH you had to PULL.  I have PULLED and all is well and these speaker are GREAT.  And I am done with all this technology and shall now go eat lunch and then get back to the real world.

Good afternoon all

I happen to be a great fan of comedy...written, stand up, etc...so here's my list, in no particular order -

Stand Up-
Bill Cosby - classic comedy, end of story
Eddie Izzard - guy in makeup and heels, british wit...how can you go wrong?
Robin Williams - guilty pleasure
George Carlin - offensive but intelligent, more amusing that laugh-out-loud funny
Dennis Leary - just because

Written -
Dave Barry (HUGE fan of Dave Barry)  I think it's his word selection that makes him so funny...he has a way of telling the most simple story that has me in tears.

TV -
Seth MacFarlane...the genius behind Family Guy.  Anyone who knows his musical theater and isn't afraid to spoof it on television has gotta be cool.

Alan Alda - M*A*S*H in general is more apt to make me actually laugh out loud than almost any other TV show.

Movie-wise, I'm very picky about my comedy.  I have no use for slapstick in general, old or new.
David Spade was wonderful as the voice of the Emperor in Disney's The Emperor's New Groove...but I can't stand him in his other works.

Jim Carey...he can be funny, but once he starts in on his trademark goofy comedy, I get bored very quickly.

I loathe Ben Stiller, and do not find him in the least bit funny.  Most of my friends adore him...I keep my mouth shut.

k, enough out of me for now

I felt so cheated with SIGNS that I didn't even watch or rent THE VILLAGE.

Don't judge this film by the trailers.  They give TOTALLY the wrong impression.   I saw this film twice.  The first time I was captivated by the story.  The second time, I was totally moved by the beauty of the film.  Do not front this movie expecting a full on horror.  To me, it was more of a psychological drama - with some extremely moving scenes.

P.S.  The soundtrack is terrific.

The horors of Nazism seem to be lost on the youth of today (and the youth of the 90s, 80s, 70s and 60s).

I've known perfectly wonderful people (otherwise) who have been totally infatuated with the Third Reich and all things Nazi.....not that they embraced what the Nazis did, but with the ideals of nationalism that swept up Germany and Germans...including the call for racial purity among aryans.

As IF....

What is terribly certain now is that the aryan blood of the monsters who formed the Third Reich was tainted with insanity, subhuman mentality and, dare I say it, terminal physical ugliness.

Could the Germans NOT SEE that the people espousing the blond-eyed, blue-haired genetic ideal were, themselves, trolls who possessed none of the DNA they purported to want to perpetuate.

Rant...rave....rant...snort...rave....

Geez, I'm steamed.

I wasn't the least bit shocked about Boone and Shannon on LOST last night. Like DR RLP, I thought Boone was gay, but seeing some of the looks the actor playing Boone was giving his step-sister, it soon seemed obvious he was at least bisexual if not compeltely hetero.

The two of them running from the monster was exciting, I jumped out of my chair at one point, and the revelation was a total surprise to me.

Sorry, MattH, I loved THE SIXTH SENSE and I never saw the ending coming until it hit me over the head.  I was blown away.  I enjoyed SIGNS, but I would never put it in the same category as SENSE.  UNBREAKABLE was the only one of M. Night's films, that I have seen, that completely turned my stomach.  I would never sit through that film a second time.

And THAT is what makes horse racing!

Horse racing indeed.  Quite liked Sixth Sense despite that to me it was obvious from quite near the beginning. (What we have here is a failure to communicate) More obvious was the fact that I thought Mr Willis did NOTHING for the movie at all.  Very wooden performer IMHO.  The kid was great as was the wife.. "Signs" was not well received here and I don't know "Unbreakable".

Making notes, printing notes, reading notes.  I've decided that by Monday I will know which way I'm going with this new thing I'm going to write.  I've almost decided on the decade, decided on several key issues on which I was waffling, and will now buckle down Winsocki and decide everything else that needs deciding.

I love having music on, right in my face, whilst I type and roam around the Internet.

The sun has fought a losing battle to break through the gray sky, although I can see it finally has way off in the distance.  Still, thankfully, it's dry.

Got two count them two CDs in the mail today - Roger Nichols and The Small Circle of Friends Complete (import) and the Paul Williams-Roger Nichols Demo Sessions (import).  Somehow I've never heard The Small Circle of Friends sides, and so far they're just great.  I know I'll enjoy the demo album, too.  I absolutely loved the A&M catalog back then.

I am pissed!
I forgot to watch Lost.
I started to watch Candide.
I did not like it. It should have been a fully stage version or a concert version with no staging.

Having Donald Trump in the show was a no no. I thought Lonny Price had some interesting staging ideas, but they ultimately failed in the concert setting.

They could have used more of the music and songs since the dialogu was abreviated. I wonder how Price was able to go back to the Hugh Wheeler version when Bernstein had his "final" version already produced. Why this step backwards?

Was it me or does Patti LuPone have terrible diction problems? I had to put on the subtitles to make out what she was saying. And the Patti LuPone joke at the end while funny was totally out of place.

I am shocked...shocked that you've never heard of Small Circle, one of the seminal albums from that era of A&M (in fact the A&M Board that Julius posted to is called "A Small Circle of Friends").  Just by coinkydink, my Tigard Pops Choir, which starts up again tonight, will be doing the Nichols/Williams tune "The Drifter," wonderfully recorded by A&M's Sandpipers and also by Harper's Bizarre.  And Roger Nichols lives in Bend, so if you come visit, we could drive over there and surprise him (it would be a complete surprise, as I have no idea where in Bend he lives, LOL).

I wrote (rewrote) in a frenzy from 6 AM until 2:30 non-stop today and finished my script. You heard it here. It's done and delivered! And I think it's good. (I HOPE it's good.)

While I was writing away this morning, I felt like I was in a Truffaut movie (specifically DAY FOR NIGHT). I glanced out my window (floor to ceiling, next to me desk) and saw a bicyclist being towed by a truck as he was filmed. Each time I looked up and glanced out, there he was again. (I think they were shooting MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE).

On my way to deliver the script - the producers' office happens to be within walking distance - I saw a middle-aged woman frantically running after a dog. "Gaspar!" she kept shouting  (with a Hispanic accent). I joined her in the chase because it looked like he was going to run into traffic and be hurt. It turned out she was a nanny who had left the baby in her charge alone to chase the dog who got out because her employer left the gate open. Mid-chase I knocked on the door of a house where I heard dogs barking and asked if I could have a dog treat and a leash. The man in the house wouldn't give me a leash, but he did hand me a biscuit. So I went running after Gaspar with the biscuit. Finally he got tired and let the nanny catch him. So then the two of us - the nanny holding him by the collar, me walking in front of him holding the biscuit out to tempt him, dragged him the fair distance back home (He was a pretty big dog!) The Nanny was very grateful and relieved. Last year Gaspar apparently pulled the same stunt and was run over! Anyway, we got him home and I continued on to deliver my script.
My good doggie deed for the day!
The End

I also enjoyed last nights Lost.   I still haven’t made my mind up as to what is really going on.  Part of me thinks they are all dead and they in that half way place and another part of me just wonders if it’s a Fantasy Island.

Congrats to DR Matthew!  I’m very happy for you!

I’m not crazy on comedians.  Some make me laugh but a lot of what is considered “funny” now days I find very crude and insulting.  I like the old “Who’s on First” type of comedy.  They could tell a joke and it didn’t have to be sexually explicit or use profanity every other word.

Good job on catching the pooch, Panni!   :)

I always wanted to be in the Stone family too.  Does that make you my sister, Jane?

Today's funny people fit more into the category of comedic actors (and are usually equally terrific in dramatic roles) rather than comedians:  Bette Midler, Lily Tomlin are two of the best.  Candace Bergen, Whoopi Goldberg are two more.  Drew Carey seems talented enough also.

People like Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Ewan McGregor and are all good in funny romantic films, but apparently they don't do as well at the box office without at least one explosion every 60 seconds.

I cannot think of any current people who are considered to be "funny" who are.

So, Jane, what do you think of Bonnie Hunt? :D

I also find her wonderfully funny, but am consistently disappointed with her sitcom attempts.

I like Bonnie Hunt a lot, too.  But she constantly insists on doing the improv stuff in all of her show and it rarely worked.  Sitcoms just don't lend themselves to that kind of comedy.

It was lucky for my mail carrier that I was at work when he was here today, because had I been here, I might have kissed him.  Today, he delivered to my front door, my very own copy of WRITER'S BLOCK, a copy of the same bestseller as a belated birthday gift for a dear friend (No, Tomovoz, not you), and two, count 'em, two copies of the BUS AND TRUCK CD.

If I was worried about experiencing any withdrawl symptoms regarding my show closing on Sunday, having BK's epic tome next to my bed having WRITER'S BLOCK sitting on my nightstand has more than eliminated them.

I know it was ask question day, but this one came to my mind.

If you could live in any television series which one would it be?

Mine would be a Bewitched, but I would have to be a warlock.

I think I would have loved to have lived in the town of Cicely in Northern Exposure.

Ellen DeGeneres can be a riot.  Michael Jeter could be hilarious.  Madeline Kahn was also a riot and yet could break your heart in another scene. I think Bonnie Hunt can be very funnny, but out of loyalty or something she surrounds herself with friends from the Chicago area that she must have worked with or gone to school with, and I found most of them annoying.   The Cusacks all seem to have good comedic skills.

Congratulations, Matthew.

Now, if this WERE the Donna Reed show, I'd know what I want to do after the enxt commercial break and get the job by the end of the episode.

I always though Carl Betz was very handsome.   Is there anytning in the sitcom moral code that says you can't sleep with your father?

If so, I've used a more recent photo in the past...and it may still be in the cache.

Strange doin's department:  I refreshed the page, and, lo and behold (and also behold and lo), everyone's avatar had disappeared and I was no longer a "user," but a "guest."  Isn't that weird?  That's the first time I've had to re-log in in a long time.

Can some of you techheads help me?  Is there a decent shareware sound recorder you can recommend?  What I need is something that will record from the line in.  We regularly tape the Tigard Pops performances (as in cassette), and then I copy the tapes.  I've had a guy who has the capability to burn CDs from the tape for those who want CDs, but he's travelling this session and won't be in the choir.  So I need something where I can hook up the cassette player to the computer through my line in, and record a decent quality WAV file that I can then burn to CD.  Editing would be nice, too, since I tend to babble between songs at the concerts and would want to delete that for the final CD.  Thanks for any suggestions.

(Just in case someone is going to mention this, the sound recorder that comes with Windows won't work because it will only do up to 1 minute.  I need something that has no time limit for the recordings).

So I was wrong that the man riding the bike repeatedly by my window was from MALCOM IN THE MIDDLE. I just read the plot summary of THE 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN:
"The film follows Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell) who lives alone in North Hollywood, rides his bicycle to work at Circuit City in the San Fernando Valley, and has a pleasant enough life. He's a nice guy, shy, considerate, polite, has a pristine collection of action figures, is pathologically nervous around women. He's our 40 year-old virgin. When three of his co-workers discover this about him, they make it their mission to get him laid. He reluctantly goes along with their plan, finding himself in some ridiculous situations along the way, until he meets Trish (Catherine Keener), a single mother of three, who changes everything."

At some point I must decide what film to watch this evening.  I have Leon: The Professional, which I've seen about eight months ago, but which I'm kind of wanting to see again, as I'm in my Natalie Portman mode.  Or, Mikey and Nicky, with Peter Falk and John Cassavetes, directed by Elaine May, which I don't think I've seen all the way through.  Or, maybe both.  Or, maybe another Edgar Wallace movie.  Or, Casque d'Or of Jacques Becker.  Of, Fighting Elegy of Seijun Suzuki.  Or...

Well I know its Catherine Keener because Tatum hasn't made a decent movie since Little Darlings in 1980 (people seemed to like but I refuse to see based on the premise of the film)

It's a shame that Tatum has followed Liza's path down to the road to career self destruction. Both had mothers who were drug addicts and couldn't take care of the children.

Bruce,
Well, the King Cousins featured the four daughters of the King Sisters, I believe, (although a couple of them could have been from other offshoots of the family).  Tina Cole is the the only one whose name I remember.   They used some of the same harmonies as the King Sisters (although not as daring).  I believe Tina Cole's father was Buddy Cole, the organist on the original version of "Mr. Lucky."   Anything else you'd like to know?  I'm sure there's a whole King Family tree somewhereon the internet, but it would frighten me.

The King Sisters' harmonies got to be pretty daring (sometimes verging on being close to what the Hi-Lo's later did).  They sounded great with Alvino Ray, but I don't remember which sister was married to Alvino Ray.

Tina Cole was later featured on "My Three Sons" as Robbie's wife.   The King Cousins were also featured one summer on the Kraft Music Hall along with John Davidson and up and coming young comics, George Carlin and Richard Pryor.   This is all I can pull out of my head about the King Cousins without loooking anything up.  So why are you asking about the King cousins?

I did not like Bonne Hunt's improv sitcom at all. I didn't find it at all funny (and they all seemed to think they were hilarious.) It did look spectacular in high definition. I don't know why it looked so different from other high def sitcoms, but it did. It truly looked like you could walk right into the screen and be in her house. Amazing HD photography.

The biggest tragedy about Bonnie's sitcom involved the hunky Mark Derwin who played her husband on the show. He was a regular on ONE LIFE TO LIVE, and the writers put his character in a coma so he could go to the West Coast and do her show. After the sitcom was picked up for a second year, ONE LIFE TO LIVE decided they had to cut him loose, and no sooner did they do that than Bonnie's sitcom hit rough ratings waters and was canceled even before the second season came to an end. So Mark lost two jobs within months of each other.

Good Evening!

Back from the show.  It's raining.  It's 64 degrees outside right now.  What season are we in again?  What month are we in again?  What hemisphere is the US in again?

I did end up making a trip to the music store before the show.  However, I made a mental list of the books I wanted to buy, and I stuck to it.  More or less.  Just two "strays", but they weren't that stray.  So...

Once I left the music store, I realized it was only 5:00.  I thought it was later.  I had a few hours to kill before show time, so I just started driving around checking out some old haunts that I hadn't been to in a while.  It was mainly a driving tour, and that was plenty.  There were whole stretches of streets and shops that were completely transformed.  The big shock was finding a new Target in the Baileys Crossroads/Skyline area.  It used to be a sort of mini-mall, and now it was one big(!) brand new Target.  I was literally saying, "O my god" out loud in the car, it was that much a shock.  Then driving by another once familiar row of shops and restaurants, I noticed that a seafood place my parents would take us kids too when we were younger had transformed itself into a Salvadoran restaurant.

My final stop before heading in for the show was Little Quiapo, my godmother's Filipino restaurant.  I ended up picking up a tray of lumpia, Filipino style eggrolls, to bring in for the cast and crew.  I got a tray of 100 - they're small, cocktail-sized.  They were all gone by the 5 minute call.

;)

Note to those "out of town" DRs planning to come see JEWISH THIGHS ON BROADWAY Opening Night/Weekend-

I was just reminded by my alma mater's academic calendar, that the opening week of JEWISH THIGHS is Spring Break for a lot of colleges.  -That week or the week before.

So... It would probably be best to start making hotel and plane reservations now rather than later.  -Yes, I know college kids normally go to someplace warm - Cancun, Cabo, etc. - for Spring Break, but a lot of them do head to NYC.  I know I did.  *And the hotels know it's Spring Break too, since the rates start to return to "normal" the first week of March.

And I believe the Spring Fashion season starts around that time too.

Just thinking ahead.

The King Family, including sisters, cousins and the whole darned lot of them, are from Utah, and I've known quite a few of them.  Lex de Azevedo was the pater familias of the generation that I knew the best.  He would come to the University and give guitar summits, and he also guest taught my jazz theory class.  His son started a little designer label called Aubergine that I had some dealings with a few years ago.  And, yes, BK, they would be right up your McGuire Sisters doing "Getting Married Today" alley.  :)

MattH:  Yes, Will and Vince broke up.

Officially, they agreed to a "break", but Will told Grace he thinks they've broken up.

The show didn't have a single laugh...dreary from start to finish.  Tomlin included, IMO.  Will was ugly about Vince, Vince was pathetic (and was fired from another job), Karen was ugly about Rosie (who had tonsillitis and had to have her tonsils out), Jack was frustrated with Karen, Grace was set up on a date with Tomlin's "hubby" (with unfunny problems of his own).  A misfire on every conceivable level, IMO.  QUITE the episode to air just after winning the People's Choice award!!! (And Grace still looks like she hasn't washed her hair since the new season began).

I avoided the 8-9 p.m. hour of masochism on NBC, opting for the CBS "Wickedly Perfect" in which a bunch of overzealous divas in two teams vied/sniped/bitched about/at/with one another while throwing themed dinner parties in competition.  The prima donnas were appropriately dissed and dealt with.

No, Promises was not limited.  But Ryko gave up and so the CD is out of print, as is Sugar.

Where did our late-night denizens go to?  Just a few short nights ago the joint was jumpin' every night.

You mean I missed out on adding SUGAR to my CD collection?!?!?

Well...

Yes, you did, you sleeping boy.  And it's great-sounding.  I think Promises sounds good, too.

I think I'm in the mood for a nice long hot shower and I shall let the water wash away all things that need washing away.  I'm not speaking of dirt, either, I'm speaking of tension and the clearing of the mind.

iChat is AIM for a mac...you can access your buddy list with it.  I use it instead of downloading AIM.  But then, I don't use AOL

Well, iJose, am very tired.  Strangely tired at this relatively early iHour - well, early for iMe.  And iI think I'm dealing with some iAcid reflux right now.  iYuck!  I have some iPepcid, and I'll guess I'll take iOne before heading to iBed.

So, iI bid all you iDRs, iAdieu.

Good iNight.

I never did get to shower earlier today when I posted that I was going to shower. NOW I'm going to shower. I think washing away tensions and clearing my mind is an excellent idea and I shall do it. (Plus - I reek of garlic of which I ate copious amounts at dinner.)

If a hot shower could wash away my tensions and problems, I'd be living permanently in the shower.

Had a marvy shower and have washed away all that needed washing away.  Made another major decision (I think - I keep changing my mind) - I do think well in the shower.

a major decision?  care to share?

Not for another eight or nine months.  A book decision.  I keep making them, then changing my mind.  I've been avoiding this decision like the plague, in the same way I avoided what became the major plotlines of both Kritzerland and Kritzer Time.  In the end, I knew that's what I had to write, and I think I've finally come to that conclusion in terms of the story line of this new thing.

I have read the notes, but have not read any of the posts...I won't be able to catch up before the posting of the new notes.  I just wanted to get in at least one post today.  WARNING, RANT AHEAD:

At work we finally had a bit of access to the REAL new computer system!  Four of the five people in my department got together for several hours today and went through several processes, trying to figure out some things.  What we found out mostly is that we STILL can't do some things!  Our computer people have tried to fix some of the problems, but they haven't been able to fix everything.  They've had to call the computer people from the company that designed the computer system to get some things fixed.  Damn them.  Damn them all to hell!  Why can't the programmers just get the darned thing right the first time?  How difficult is that??  Aaarrrggghhh! >:(

Okay, rant over. ;D  As it turns out, Friday (tomorrow) is the last work day before we totally go live with the new system on Tuesday and the old system is completely gone for good!  After that, it will be what it really will be (not quite a "Que Sera, Sera" reference...but almost).  Actually, today we were able to do a few things that seemed to happened the way they're supposed to work, but we still have a ways to go before the system will be completely right.  So that will be our day tomorrow.  Trying to find out what works and what doesn't...whether it's the way we want it to work that way or not, just as long as something works. :-\
