Title: THE MUSIC OF THE NOTES
Post by: bk on January 13, 2005, 11:59:06 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've had mercurial mood swings during the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the mercurial musical cows come home.

I will have to ponder the 60's song question...many come to mind, but I must double-check dates before I post, lest I appear ignorant and foolish.  I'm famously bad when it comes to remembering things like dates and names and where I parked my car at the airport.

Goodnight

I'm not the least bit tired.

So many sixties songs - no way to list all of my faves:

Johnny Get Angry, Sealed With a Kiss, End of the World, Lollipops and Roses, Go Away, Little Girl, Michelle, the Bacharach/David songs, Autumn, In My Life, She Cried, A Taste of Honey, Downtown, I Know a Place and all the other Petula/Tony Hatch/Jackie Trent songs, especially Don't Sleep in the Subway - I'll stop and let others have some fun.

I'm too tired to think of the 60's. "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" is now running through my head for some reason. So, I'll start with that.

WUSSBURGER.

Of course we must include all of A Tramp Shining by Jimmy Webb, sung by Richard Harris.

More songs of the 60's I like and can think of right now...
Moon River; Blowin' in the Wind; Eleanor Rigby; Come Saturday Morning; A Man and a Woman; Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head...

I don't love being called a WUSSBURGER - nor am I a WUSSBURGER. I've now been up since 5:30 this morning. if that's a WUSSBURGER, then you're a pickle. (It's all I could think of suddenly.) A kosher dill.

My senility had reared its ugly head once again - for some reason as I was writing the notes I thought it was Thursday, hence the topic instead of What's in our CD DVD players.  We'll do that tomorrow.  Of course, it was Thursday when I actually wrote the notes.  It's SO confusing.

I remembered why I can't sleep.  I had a Starbucks frozen mocha-fudge bar whilst watching CSI this evening.  It was just enough caffeine to keep me from drifting off now.  I am trying some warm mlik...perhaps that will help.

Good morning, all!  I'm listening to JEEPERS CREEPERS, which has several wonderful 60s songs I had disregarded ("Look for a Star") or never heard ("The Faithful Heart").

The 60s is one of my favorite periods, through highschool and college, so let's see what my vague mind recalls:
 MOVIES:  Moon River
              Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte
              Goldfinger
              Moon River
              Charade
              The Look of Love
              The Windmills of my Mind
              Help
              Ticket to Ride
              A Hard Day's Night
              Mrs Robinson

THEATRE:  Promises, Promises
I'll Never Fall in Love Again
               All of CAMELOT
All of ON A CLEAR DAY YOU CAN SEE FOREVER
               All of SHE LOVES ME
               Aquarius
               Hair
               Easy to Be Hard
               Frank Mills
All of JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL . . .
               All of MARAT/SADE
If I Gave You (HIGH SPIRITS)
               Don't Rain on My Parade

FOLK:       Blowin' in the Wind
Where Have All the Flowers Gone?
Can't Help But wonder Where I'm Bound
The Last Thing on My Mind
               Mr Tambourine Man
               Early Mornin' Rain
If You Could Read My Mind
               The Circle Game
               Both Sides Now

OTHER:     The Boxer
               Here There and Everywhere
               Eleanor Rigby
               Feelin' Groovy
Do You Know the Way to San Jose
Are You There With Another Girl

I'll see later posts and think, how did I miss that one?  I think it's a Barnes & Noble block this morning!

Just a quick note to say hello. I must wash my oatmeal bowl and make some photocopies before beginning the workday. I will ponder the question of the day and while I'm doing that I will listen to Michael Feinstein Remember (the Irving Berlin album) and one of his first albums (if not the first) Pure Gershwin and then Johnny Mathis This Heart of Mine.

We will be on LI for the long weekend. Don't know if we will watch anything.

I'm way behind (a reverse Seesaw reference) - Ben's finished his oatmeal and I'm just starting mine.

If I may sneak in a question for BK. I was just over at Amazon, looking at Liz Callaway's ANYWHERE I WANDER CD. Do you know why the cover has changed?

Here's the new one:

DRDIT, I lodged a complaint with the new Fynsworth Alley powers-that-be at the time of the switch, since all recording credits (including mine!) on the back of the original cover had been removed.  Of course at the time it was my vanity that was pissed off, but I've come to believe it was an attempt to remove BK from the cover.

JEWISH THIGHS Alert!  Saturday night was chosen over Friday because DRPennyO has two shows on Saturday, and it was felt that a social night was better for Saturday so that she and DRJose would be in fine fettle for the Saturday shows.  If DRs wanted to come in for the weekend, there are other things to see and do on Friday night.

Thanks DRs Elmore and Michael. I much prefer the original cover, and agree that the entire production and orchestrations in particular are outstanding. In fact, the reason I was checking out the CD is because I was playing it over the holidays. A friend who was visiting was so moved by the recording that I gave it to her. I may check eBay - I want the old cover, with the proper credits.

I'm up, I'm awake!  But groggy.

It is raining here in Rehoboth Beach, DE.  Today we will again be ladsitting in Maryland all day.  I shall be ladsitting the grandlads in the rain.  It almost sounds like a Jimmy Webb lyric.

I shall be ladsitting the grandlads in the rain while I roast a beast for the family for tonight.  We shall feast on roast beast and baked potatoes and probably broccoli in the rain.

And the dogs will have to miss us all day.

The lot next door is nothing but dirt.  In the rain.  That's called mud.

My favorite songs from the 60s would be from Broadway musicals and movies, and most have already been named from movies: "Moon River" and other Mancini greats.

I did have friends who listened to soul and folk and pop so I guess I could include "My Guy," "If I Had a Hammer," "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and all the Petula Clark hits since I liked them, too. I also liked "You Can't Hurry Love" by the Supremes.

Since BK said to wait until tomorrow, I'll hold off on my Media Check until then.

We had a horrendous storm come through here after midnight. I was reading in the bed, and I was truly afraid a tree was going to come crashing through the roof. There had been tornados to the west of us earlier in the evening, but the weather showed they were missing us and moving northeast. I guess another cell of activity hit us later.

What a lot of posts from yesterday!  Each and every one a gem!

Lovely photos DRLAURA, as usual.  The adventures of PANNI AND THE NANNY will soon be optioned by Kelly Ripa, I am sure....filmed where it actually happened!

Congratulations to DRMATTHEW!

The King Cousins CD?  Wow!  I have an LP from The King Family TV Show that I love - I think it was on ABC for half a season!  In fact I think friend of DRCP - Mr Harlan Ellison reviewed said program by saying:  "The King Family is the Harold Robbins of television, lower than that, I cannot go...."  He also said some funny personal things about the sisters' hairstyles and their relationships with their husbands.  But I want that CD.  DRKERRY is right, Tina Cole was on MY THREE SONS - her I didn't mind, but when Beverly Garland and Dodie (Leif Garrett's real life sister) joined the cast....ugh!

So many of my 60's favorites have already been chosen including Moon River - but I will try to mention some lesser lights:

Monkey's Uncle - Annette & the Beach Boys
Battle of New Orleans, North to Alaska - Johnny Horton
Running Bear - Johnny Preston
Single Girl - Sandy Posey
My Boy Lollipop - Millie Small
Sugar Shack - The Fireballs

And some more....for later....if they are not mentioned.

Thank you, DR RLP, for the WILL & GRACE summary. I really don't know who they've got writing the show now, but they took a potentially rewarding relationship between Will and Vince and turned it to crap, and for no purpose other than to make him as single as Grace once again. The dissolution of their relationship was handled about as badly as anything I've seen in TV writing since DYNASTY where folks broke up and made up faster than a speeding bullet.

Good morning. For all those who follow The Life of Panni and take notes... Remember the cleanse-away-my-tensions-and-black-thoughts (and schmutz) shower I was going to take on two different occasions yesterday? -- Well, I didn't. (To reassure those Panni fans who are now going "Yechhh!" - I DID take a morning shower at about 5 AM, but needed a second one after my heavy writing and dog chasing - refer to yesterday's "Adventrues of Panni".) But, as I stated earlier in this novella, I did not get around to that shower.
Get out your notebooks, because NOW, I am going to shower. Really and truly.
The End.

REALLY, REALLY STRANGE DOIN'S DEPARTMENT:  I posted yesterday about somehow being consigned to the "guest" department here, even though I had never logged off.  Well, this morning I logged on and something really weird was going on.  Certain words in BK's notes had a yellow underline on them, and when I passed the cursor over them, they became hyperlinks.  For instance:  "mercurial" had a link to the online Webster's dictionary; "hotel" had a link to Orbitz; and, most hilarious, "lonely" (twice), as well as "lonely hearted" had links to online dating sites.  The strangeness continued right here in the posts where certain words had links.  I began to notice that on my task bar I was getting a "Top Text Link" prompt, so I went into my programs and saw I had something called eZula for some reason.  I am assuming this happened yesterday when I was sampling various sound recorders, but I didn't download this particular program.  It's gone now, hopefully.  Isn't that too too?

And I say this only because I'm a lesbian, but I believe Come Saturday Morning is actually a 70s song, the last great A&M single by The Sandpipers.

Speaking of which Fred Karlin's Oscar-mate for "For All We Know," Bread's Jimmy Griffin, died yesterday.   :(

DR Elmore,

Many of mine match yours, too. I'm glad you highlighted ON A CLEAR DAY - I was listening to it earlier, along with another Barbara Harris favorite, THE APPLE TREE. From those shows, my favorites are "Hurry It's Lovely Up Here," and "What Makes Me Love Him." For Harnick and Bock, I'd also include all of SHE LOVES ME, plus TENDERLOIN'S "My Gentle Young Johnny."

I'd also have include the title songs from HELLO DOLLY and DO I HEAR A WALTZ.

"If I Gave You," from HIGH SPIRITS, is a great song. I thought it was an instant classic when I heard it for the first time. Another song that struck me that way was "Three Ships," from A TIME FOR SINGING.

For Michel Legrand, I'd place LES PARAPLUIES DE CHERBOURG near the very top of my list. I like "Windmills of Your Mind" - but just the music. I'm not a big fan of the Bergmans.

Other choices include the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" and Pete Seeger's "Blowin' in the Wind."

I can go on, but these were the first to pop into my head.

Yes, this was my thought, too, so I just ran AOL's Spyware detector.  Are you ready for this.  ELEVEN (count 'em) programs were there.  Deleted them all.  Ran another scan.  TWO more!!  About to run my third scan.  Unbelievable, and all from two sound recorder downloads.  Is this because I'm a lesbian?

TOD:

A Quiet Thing, from Flora, the Red Menace
Nothing Can Stop Me Now, from The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd
Leaving on a Jet Plane

Also, early 60's the entirety of the New Christy Minstrels and, later, the Beatles.  Growing up in Motown, I also followed the Supremes pretty closely.

Finally, it's the 60's music (and the University of Michigan connection, of course) that makes me love the movie The Big Chill.

They redid several covers - probably to make them seem like "new" releases to some folks.  The original Liz does Loesser cover was not very good anyway - however, I think the photo on the new cover is not-very-good.  And yes, credits were removed from the back of the album - that, too, happened on several releases.  Unless I wasn't the producer - if tthe producer was the fellow who "took over" for me, then his name was tthere.

JMK, as you are on AOL you can now download anti-virus software for free...it will also catch several spyware/adwares.

By the way, which Percy Faith Cd did you mention the other day that had singing on it...it sounded like one that I would enjoy.

I recently picked up (marked down 75% at Borders) 101 Strings 30th Anniversary CD...it is magnificent!!

What a strange morning.  I was awakened by what sounded like a book falling over.  I don't know what it really was as no book had fallen over, since there are no books in my bedroom.  I took a walk around the home environment and all was well.  Then I got back in bed and couldn't sleep, and then I started getting some interesting thoughts which led to other thoughts and then I was madly scribbling on my bedside pad.  I fell back asleep at some point, and then I was awakened again, this time by the doorbell.  Since last night I was a bit discombobulated or, at the very least, discomneilulated, thinking it was Thursday rather than Friday (after midnight) I also forgot that she of the Evil Eye was coming today rather than Saturday.  Talk about disorienting.

I didn't name any songs from Broadway shows since the list would go on for pages, but the song written for Liza in BEST FOOT FORWARD, "You Are for Loving" is indeed one of my favorites. (Later interpolated into MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS.)

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

The storms that were over DR MattH gradually worked their way northward.  It was quite stormy here in the DC area from about 3:00-6:00.  Lots of rain, lots of wind and some thunder.  It woke me up.  A couple of times.  Even my father who normally sleep through almost anything had some trouble sleeping last night.

And speaking of my father, he decided to go ahead and get dressed up and head into work.  He's just going in to help with the afternoon clean-up, but it's nice to know that he's feeling that much better.  -Although, I think he's still officially on leave for a few more weeks.

In the meantime, my brother Mike's dog, Iki, a chihuahua, is keeping me company today.  Iki is a good dog.  He has that constant "shiver" that chihuahua's seem to have, but he's very cute when he shivers.  And he always makes sure you know when he must go outside.

-That's more of a self-protection ploy since I don't want to deal with what DR Ben is dealing with right now.

;D

...But I do love the music from the 60's.  Such a wide range of "popular" music during the era.  Maybe once the clouds in my head clear, I'll post some of my favorites.

The King Cousins CD is a Japanese import.

I must get out of here in a few minutes - I am REALLY getting the Evil Eye.

Jrand, if it's not letterboxed I don't know that you'll like The Cardinal, which depends on its widescreen images for its power.  I like it.  I think the DVD, which is faboo (widescreen, gorgeous stereo) is fairly inexpensive.

DR MBarnum - Ah, 101 Strings!  My parents had a bunch of 101 Strings and Mantovani Strings records in their collection, single albums as well as the box sets.  The box sets always impressed me with their packaging.  Especially the ones with the top "flap".  I can still picture the woman on the cover of the 101 Strings "Look of Love" box.  It was basically an all black, glossy cover, but off to the side, in an oval window there was a picture of a woman's face, with some diaphanous fabric around her face.  And her very alluring, inviting eyes.

...And I always liked playing one of the versions of "Hey, Jude" since it played all the final choruses.  And in an instrumental version that got to be sort of humorous after the sixth or seventh chorus.

Well, since it seems that most of your music has come from your hard copies, your own CDs, then it wouldn't be like losing a couple hundred dollars worth of iTunes downloads.  So..

Ah, well...  They have a really strange season - at least from the ads placed in the 10Cs program book.  I believe BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS is coming in too, if it hasn't already.  And they're all non-union shows too.  I have nothing against non-union shows, but in that cavern of a space, it just makes it easier to see who's trying to screw the cast and crew over make the real money.

MBarnum:  The latest Percy Faith reissue with chorus is I Think I Love You, but make sure if you order you specifically tell them you want the corrected version--the first one had a wrong song on it in the bonus tracks.  I tend not to like the Chorus albums of Faith as much as the purely instrumental ones, but this has some nice tunes on it, including two tunes from Superstar and a very beautiful ballad called Don't Say Goodbye.

Re:  The Cardinal.  One summer when I was staying with my infamous Uncles in New York, my Uncle Pat took me to lunch with one of his tenants, Harrison Starr, who was one of the producers on that film (and Zabriskie Point, too, if I'm remembering our lunchtime conversation correctly).  Harrison was (is?  Is he still alive?) a very nice man whom I remember mostly for his incredibly long, flowing curly hair--kind of like a Jewish Afro.  He told me to keep writing because acting as a profession was the pits.  :)

Bobby Cannavale's doing a New York revival of HURLY BURLY, I believe.  He probably asked to be written out for a while.  Still, WILL & GRACE has struck me as pretty pathetic the entire season and most of last.  I think last night's may have been the nadir, ad perhaps the question they're working on is How Low Can We Go?

We stopped watching the show a while ago because we thought it had reached a low point. It's unfortunate to hear that people think it's even worse now than it was last season. The sad part is, when you see episodes from the early seasons, especially the first and second season, you realize how much fun it was. Well written, well acted, funny...Everything it's not now. Karen was a real person in the first few seasons. Will may not have had a date or a boyfriend, but at least you cared about him. Jack may have made dumb comments but you didn't wonder how any human being could be so unrelentingly stupid and still get up in the morning and dress himself and get out of his apartment. I could go on but I won't. Rant over.

Absolutely.  It's not a song, but it IS a 60s reference...when I saw the movie, read the book and memorized the quote from Pope's poem.

Here's a quote QUIZ from a movie of that era:

Hmm... If I'm remembering correctly (that IIRC in internet lingo), salt-dough was basically made up of one part flour, one part salt, and enough water to make it play-do-like.  Oh, and food coloring.

I remember making some sort of diorama in fourth grade, and after baking some of the pieces, I had some left over, and decided like nine-year olds are wont to to taste some of the extra pieces.  It was like an extra(!) salty, thick cracker.

Here's one I found doing a google search:

2      c             Flour
4      c             Oatmeal
1      c             Water
1      c             White corn syrup
1      c             Peanut butter
1 1/2  c             Nonfat dry milk
1 1/4  c             Confectioner's sugar

Mix flour and oatmeal in blender and grind for about 30 seconds.
Add   1 cup water and knead.
Add corn syrup, peanut butter, nonfat milk, and   confectioners sugar.
  Combine and knead well.
Add more flour or   powdered milk if dough is still sticky.
Put out bowls of chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, sunflower   seeds,
white chocolate chips, red hots or peanuts to decorate creations.
Variations:  Mix 16 oz peanut butter with 6 tablespoons honey. Add   dry milk
or flour until not sticky. Chocolate chips may be added.

Peanut Butter/Graham Cracker Play Dough

Equal amounts of Peanut Butter and Marshmallow Cream
Graham Crackers

First, have the children wash their hands before beginning so they can safely lick their fingers during this project.

Allow children to crumble up Graham Crackers into crumbs, then set these aside. Let them have just a little touch of the Marshmallow Cream and a little touch of peanut butter to feel the different textures and to lick off their fingers.

Mix the peanut butter and Marshmallow Cream together and have the children notice the change in texture. Cover surface area with wax paper or use a breadboard, let children make into shapes. Roll shapes in Graham Cracker crumbs, then eat!

Too many good songs from the sixties.  I'd go crazy trying to think of my favs.  Tomvoz has a couple of very impressive lists.  Glad to see SHADRACK by Brook Benton and MY GUY by Mary Wells.

I was also a fan of I BEAT YOU TO THE PUNCH by Mary.

Brook's duet with Dinah Washington, ROCKING GOOD WAY has always been infectious for me.  His HOUSE IS NOT A HOME is also great.

POINT OF NO RETURN by Gene MacDaniels is an excellent choice.  I also like his 100 POUNDS OF CLAY and TOWER OF STRENGTH.

EVERY BREATH I TAKE may be my favourite of Gene Pitney's.  But there were so many others.

I've always been a sucker for one-hit wonder Bruce Chanel's HEY, BABY.

Another one-hit wonder, Dee Clark's RAINDROPS.

Was it Ben. E. KING who had I, WHO HAVE NOTHING?

Del Shannon's RUNAWAY.

ELVIS had a bunch.  I think HIS LATEST FLAME has been mentioned.  Also STUCK ON YOU.  LITTLE SISTER. FAME & FORTUNE...

The late, great Jackie Wilson's greatest hit was in the fifties, Lonely Teardrops, but he had a big sixties hit with HIGHER & HIGHER.

HURT by Timi Yuro and her other one, WHAT'S A MATTER, BABY (Is It Hurtin' You?) were both great.

Favourite Beatles would have to be ELEANOR RIGBY.

JUST ASK THE LONELY...I've got it attributed to the Four Tops is that right?

HE WILL BREAK YOUR HEART & MAKE IT EASY ON YOURSELF...by Jerry Butler.

The Drifters' SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME, WHEN MY LITTLE GIRL IS SMILING, UP ON THE ROOF.

Dion's LOVER WHO WANDER, RUBY BABY, RUNAROUND SUE

Clyde McPhatter's LOVER'S QUESTION, LOVER PLEASE, LITTLE BITTY PRETTY ONE

STAY by Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs

Roy Orbison's WORKING FOR THE MAN, RUNNING SCARED

HE'S A REBEL, UPTOWN...The Crystals

BABY, THE RAIN MUST FALL...Glenn Yarborough

Ohhh...so many other songs...Most of these are just top forty stuff

WILL & GRACE can occasionally come up with a winner. The Thanksgiving episode this year was wonderful. But their average is low and getting lower each season. The absolute worst story arc ever was the Will & Grace make a baby arc. Absolutely a loser from start to finish.

Isn't anyone going to pick as a favorite 60s song "The Twizzle"? Immortalized on THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW by Broadway actor Jerry Lanning, it's got to be one of the great songs.

NOT! Even the cast of the show hated that episode.

Thanks DR Charles for the reminders: I forgot:
Save The Last Dance for me - the Drifters
I'll Save The Last Dance For you - Damita Jo
The Wanderer - Dion
The Honey Wind Blows - Glenn Yarbarough
Little Town Flirt - Del Shannon

Dee Clark would hate to be remembered as a one hit wonder! He had 6 top 40 hits in the USA - including the well remembered (I would have thought) "Hey Little Girl (In The High School Sweater)"

"Ask The Lonely" was the Four Tops (1965)

Last night's episode beats that one by a mile!

The funniest one is recent memory, though, is the one in which Leo and Grace have Will, Jack, Karen and an old girlfriend of Leo's (played by Mira Sorvino).

That was a last season episode, but you're right, it was witty and hilarious. I had high hopes this year for a similar episode with Kristin Davis as Vince's gal pal (I believe this one was repeated last night). Anyway, it wasn't the least bit funny.

As far as Bobby Cannavale doing HURLYBURLY, I don't think that was the reason they ended the relationship. He's never been a regular, and has only had occasional appearances on the show. If they had wanted the duo to continue, they could have come up with a reason for his absence. With the way they had him switching jobs, he could have tried to become a pilot or something and be away at flight school. Who knows?

Hi all!

TGIF Big time!  I didn't think this week would EVER be over.

We had the rain today.  The temp is going to go down to the 40's next week.  Ugh.  The last couple of weeks has been of what I consider Florida weather to be like!

I had to leave work at noon so I could take Mom for her follow up so of all days it had to pour!  I hate to drive as it is but I was scared to death today.  Since I have an electrical problem with the van, I never know if my lights are on or off unless it’s dark.

I think I shall have to start some serious looking into getting a new vehicle.

Ginny, I’m doing a little kicking myself—nothing for sure on my part either but I would like to throw out the idea that if any of the gals want to share/split a room to bring the costs down, maybe we could talk.   Again, I’m not promising anything at this point—it’s just a thought.  PM or e-mail if your interested.

I really had it in mind to make the trip in the Fall and to maybe, maybe, maybe stay a week but if this was a short trip—Friday-Monday or Tuesday; I might make it up twice this year.

Believe it or not, Delta Airlines was outside our building handing out game pieces for a contest they are having.  I won 10% off of my next ticket purchase.

I’m amazed that no one has said anything about the Monkees.  I loved them when I was kid.  Mickey was my favorite until he permed his hair.

Will & Grace Gossip

Sean Hayes & Eric McCormick do not get along with each other.

Eric's nickname is Generic McCormick
*********************************************************

Will & Grace have never been pleasant characters. Self-Centered, Selfish, Egocentric, Needy etc etc.

Karen and Jack in the beginning were fresh and interesting. But now tired and old. Jack's character is just old. He has never grown or developed. Really a one note character. And does anyone know a gay man like that?

Jumping the Shark moment???
I think it was when Jack became a father.

The whole Grace married to Leo was never believable because Conick was never going to be a regular and the lame excuse of his affair was just the excuse to get let him go from the series.

The only intercharacter relationship that held/holds any interest was/is Karen and Rosario.

The Will-Vince reltionship was bound to crash. See Grace-Leo for boredom quotient.

regarding Bond theme songs, once Duran Duran did "A View to Kill" I knew that the glory days were over.  Heck, I even like "Moonraker" and "For Your Eyes Only."  Still, wouldn't have Shirley Bassey sung "GoldenEye" far better than Tina Turner? ? ?

I think I can understand why McCormick wouldn't get along with Hayes on "Will and Grace."

Jack and Karen are the most popular cast members and get all the awards.  While they've been winners in supporting roles in recent years, BOTH were nominated in leading actor categories for the DGA Awards....and McCormick and Messing were not.

I'm sure it's jealousy more than anything.

I just finished watching Ice Station Zebra filmed in Cinerama.  (Superpanavision) Very claustrophobic used of the film process. Most of the first part of the film takes place inside a submarine. The balance of part two takes place on a studio bound exterior set which is very obvious to me.

At this Hollywood version of the north pole where no ones breath is seen and where there is shifts in the natural lighting. (Wouldn't the top of the world either have the six months of daylight and six months of darkness.) Also the double exposure of the snow storm makes the situation even more unrealistic. (The film was nominated for an oscar for special effects). The climax of the film was very unexciting and uneventful. The reason for the trip to Ice Station Zebra wasn't even explained until part 2! How boring the wait was.

The only plus for me was the Michel Legrand score which for me was very untypical score for him.

I am wondering for those that saw it in the theater in the original release was it any better than watching it on tv?

I have a widescreen tv and the image fills up the whole screen and just wondered how exciting this movie was or wasn;t in the curved screen process?

I know that only less two dozen films were filmed in superpanavision and last one to do so was either Tron or Brainstorm. Could they have been shown in Cinerama Theater even though there were not billed that way?

I ordered an all-region DVD player last week. (It hasn't arrived yet.) That's because I was told by this very same satisfied customer my life would not be complete without that item. Shouldn't I complete my life one step at a time? Just asking. ???

No, but I have!  Here at work, we finally have actually gotten into the REAL new computer system (very carefully!) and have poked around and looked at some things.  It's not as doom-and-gloom-y as I had expected, but it's not as slick and quick as the old system used to be.  Let's just hope that it doesn't totally crash when the entire library district goes completely live on Wednesday!!

That darn Ann, always catching up.

Ice Station Zebra was  a "Cinerama" film in name only.  Cinerama as a process (three separate strips of film, three projectors) went away after How The West Was Won.  So, while Ice Station Zebra showed in some Cinerama theaters it was simply 70mm.  That said, if you're not seeing small bars top and bottom your TV isn't set up correctly.  If you have a widescreen TV you should see the black bars which are set for an approximately 2.20 ratio.

DR MBarnum - If you happen to read this before 11:35 PST - ABC's 20/20 is about Bollywood tonight.  I just finished watching it.  It was a good intro to the genre.  -However, I did find the one Indian-American filmmaker a bit obnoxious and actually condescending to his culture.  Very opportunist.  However... DR Michael Shayne: Even though ICE STATION ZEBRA was billed as a Cinerama film, it would not have filled the entire curved screen of a true Cinerama theater. Super Panavision 70 (which MY FAIR LADY was also filmed in) was actually not quite as wide as Cinemascope and certainly not as wide as Ultra Panavision (which the Brando MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, MAD MAD WORLD and a few others were filmed in) or real Cinerama. I saw it at the Cinerama theater here in Charlotte (the Carolina - it pushed '2001' out of the theater) and found it overlong and not particularly interesting. Its aspect ratio at 70 mm is 2.20:1. Ultra Panavision was 2.76:1

We started getting the street closings list for next week's Inaugural Festivities.  They actually started closing some streets downtown tonight - well, at least limiting their access.  Some closings will take place Sunday night, and then the majority will take place starting Wednesday afternoon.  Of course, the show must go on, so we all started planning alternate routes and also deciding whether or not to take the Metro in.  Taking Metro is OK, but due to Arena's location on the Green Line, it will require 2 transfers.  And for myself, since I'm out in Fairfax, the trip will take at least one hour to make, so... I'll keep my ears on the traffic reports on the radio and take it from there.  As long as the roads actually do start to open back up after 4:00pm next Thursday...

But, in general, it's going to be a little inconvenient getting across and through town all next week.  Let's just hope everyone behaves.

I'm sorry but Sandrine Bonnaire was NEVER in any Bollywood production, as far as I know!

I've brought the Hotel's garbage to be picked up later, a few minutes ago.

Made some coffee for the "caféterie" for breakfast. It's 6:54 am here!

Brought in the rolls and croissants (fresh) that were delivered around 6:30 am!

Cleaned my hands, blew my nose! Checked what was going on outside, because some jerk was blowing his horn "unseemlessly"! At 6:51 am, with my guests asleep!
I tell you!
I blew my nose; he blew his horn!(I was nosy! Was he horny?! Hmmm)
Wonder if his name is Gabriel!

I love my life!

I actually tried to watch some DVDs this week, but my father disconnected the DVD played in the family room in order to hook up his karaoke machine, so...

However, I did bring my DVD played back from Richmond, and I can hook that one up downstairs on the BIG home-theatre screen down there.  -It's my brother Don's TV.  He just doesn't want to deal with having to move it into his new place just yet.  It's BIG.  So...

I agree with you on Savoie.

Jenny Kirk was "just average", IMO.  Her skating is perfunctory and lacks imagination, creativity and flow.  She could use some flair if she can find any anywhere.

Kwan -- who was magnificent in all respects -- was fire and magic and gossamer enchantment.  Her program seems to last a minute and no more.

Kirk's seemed like 5 minutes.  She's very lucky to be in third place, IMO, because Beatrisa Lang outskated her at every turn.

I have caught up, as they say.

It is a rather boring Friday evening around these here parts.  Nothing much decent on TV.  My mother is staying with me, so she's dominating the remote, as usual.  Our tastes are so vastly different when it comes to TV, that I usually let her take the remote as the guest, and find something else to occupy my attention.

My boys have been sick all week...and now I'm feeling a tickle in my throat that makes me nervous.  The last thing I want is to be sick right before I go in for surgery.

I have run out of boring things to say
