Title: THE GREAT SANDWICH
Post by: bk on February 14, 2018, 12:27:24 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of a great sandwich, and now it is time for you to post until the great cows come home.

Is today Valentine's Day - isn't that always on the 15th?  Shows you how many valentines I've had in the last fifty years.  Maybe that's where George and TCB are - celebrating Valentine's Day - we'll have to have photographs, however.

The birds and kitties are fed, I am bathed, and I think I may go into midtown today and see if I can buy a cheap ticket for the matinee of Farinelli and the King.  I've wanted to see it since it was announced and it's only playing for another month.

Until then, I have my usual tasks here: tidy, litter box, make the bed.  I think I will finish printing out the invoices from Amazon purchases,  That will finish all of my IRS prep work.

BK, I didn’t care for Frances Ha, either. I found it a chore to get through and the charms of Ms Gerwig most dubious.

But I do recall sort of liking the ending — and not just because it was ending.

Fred, how did the show at 54 Below go?

I was sick as a hacking, coughing dog on Monday, but I was there for the weeks of planning and rehearsals before Monday, so i knew it was going to be great.  vixmom was there and reported the other night; she took some photos, and my fave of her photos is a selfie she took of herself with BD Wong, a shot which feels so full of joy!

If you like those dogs.  Unfortunately my sister's spoiled brat is all I think of.

The first experience was when she left me with her puppy in a big mall, for a "few" minutes, near her and didn't return for an hour.  When the puppy peed and crapped and security came to kick me out my children ran and hid.

Oh, there were many embarrassing moments with my sister and her dog over the years.  This may have been the worst.

Grant has designed the interiors for every book from Writer's Block on.  He's designed all the covers from that book on except for Murder at the School Musical, Patrick Bronstein Presents, Thrill Ride, and the new book - those covers were designed by Doug Haverty.  He uses Quark to design the interior.

I'm still trying to get a new thermostat installed. The building management clearly does not want to pay for it. Someone from the gas company is scheduled to come out later today. Meaning the original Broadway production of SLEUTH, of course.

I gather the intermission crowd was very careful about spoilers when TCB starred in SLEUTH

As far as I know the intermission crowd has been pretty good.  However, the first time I did the play (1975) the drama critic said in the review, "Since I am sure that everyone already knows the secret of SLEUTH, I don't mind saying....."  We were not happy.

Back from Barone's and pizza.  I was pulling out to go back to Corky's for the sandwich thing, but Grant asked if we could go to Barone's and since he tells me he will start on the book this afternoon, I said yes.  So, we had a pepperoni pizza.   Very wonderful but far too much food.

When we were putting together our book on FORBIDDEN BROADWAY, Gerard Alessandrini told me this great line actually came from his mother in reaction to GRAND HOTEL when they saw it together.

I kind of wish I hadn't found this out, that what's considered by many who follow him to be one of the all-time greatest Forbidden Broadway lines was not actually written by Gerard Alessandrini.  In its own world as to a greatly gifted modern writer's output, it feels like finding out the Bard didn't write "To be or not to be" or "All the world's a stage..."

Of course, in proportion to their relative places in theater history.

Thanks, everyone.  I am fine....just a bit sore....I took one of my super duper pain pills left over from surgery....so even if I was in great pain, I wouldn't know it.

Relaxing with pain pills tonight should help reduce the pain you feel tomorrow.

Vibes you are no more than a little sore.

Saw that on Facebook. It was wonderful.

I hope you are feeling better.

Jane asked for an update after the gas company visit:

I HAVE A NEW THERMOSTAT!!! YAY!

Last week when I phoned the gas company the woman I spoke to told me that they don't replace thermostats, but they'd be happy to come out and diagnose the situation. She thought they might be able to replace some of the thermostat parts. She was incorrect; they DO replace thermostats, but cannot repair them, only replace. The technician checked out the heater, found nothing wrong, and said it's most likely the thermostat. I phoned the manager, told her he was here, that it most likely was indeed the thermostat, and said he could replace it for $90. Could we go ahead? After some hesitancy, she gave her permission.

As usual, the technician arrived in the 3-hour window, was very professional, and got the job done. I really don't trust the HVAC guy they use--he doesn't return my calls, shows up without the correct parts (or any parts) and is often a couple hours late. I'd much rather use the gas company. I wish I'd known they could do this; I could have saved myself a lot of grief. Next time I'll just schedule the visit and let the technician  tell me they don't do it--if indeed they don't.

And the silliest part is that this was really bugging me and it was solved for $90. I don't see the sense in alienating a good tenant for $90. I was ready to pay for it myself just to have it done. I don't think I'll have to do that now. When someone from the gas company says, "You need a new thermostat" he is believed. I'm not. So, best possible outcome.

I think one of the greatest lines in Forbidden Broadway history is when Mary Martin and Ethel Merman are announced, and Ethel comes out belching: "And now I'M going to do a duet!"

The other was Patti LuPone in Anything Goes: "Hanumsms fhsadffjk (something unintelligible), Billy!"

Medical billing can be a very complicated matter and I've no doubt there are MANY errors. The best strategy I've found for dealing with medical bureaucracies is persistence.

I hope you're able to get it much closer to 100%.

Watching the first part of Loving Vincent, an animated film about Van Gogh that features hand-painted illustrations from more than 100 artistis, all in Van Gogh's style. Most is true to the originals, but one of the voices is Aidan Turner of Poldark -- and the artist must have fallen in love because the character looks like Turner. I'd say right down to the hair, but the character is wear a hat.

So, I'm stuck at Burger King!  Here's what I posted on FB for my new cover photo:

Quote
I was in Burger King, eating a grilled chicken salad and cop cars started driving by. I didn't think much of it. When I finished eating and was going to leave, that's when I saw that my car was blocked and I couldn't leave, so I took the picture and came back into the restaurant. I'm otherwise safe and sound. :D

Well, it appears everyone (including me, which is the most important thing) survived the Anything Goes run-through.  I honestly didn't think I was going to survive the day leading up to it, cramming the book into my head and fingers.  I shall try to have a little more sense next time I feel like sacrificing myself to a project.  Had I taken five minutes to think about it AND look through the score first, I would not have done it.  Very tricky, that Beaumont.

This was without having to attempt the long dance breaks.  The MD had thankfully made tracks of those for them to work with.  Those could NOT have been accomplished today.  That's the only way this worked.  They'd be ridiculous played on just piano anyway.

They had an interesting thing there to play on:  a Yamaha electronic piano that not only looks pretty much like a typical studio piano, it totally FEELS like a piano.  You really can't say that about any keyboard, no matter how expensive and nicely weighted the keys are.  This was fun to play.
