Title: YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW
Post by: bk on January 14, 2005, 11:58:50 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've been confounded by the notes, you are now totally confoosed (as Li'l Abner would say), day-wise, and now it is time to post until the cows come home, which will, of course, be yesterday, today, or tomorrow.

I have not yet done the dance of the Wussburger.  I have not done the dance of the Seven Veils either.  Perhaps I shall do the dance of the Seven Wussburgers.

The title of today's notes has put a song in my head.  Between Yesterday and Tomorrow.  I believe it is a Michel Le Grand song...does anyone know?

Sounds like Michel.  Don't WUSSBURGER - we miss you when you're gone.

Between yesterday and tomorrow,
There is more there is more than a day.

Between day and night between black and white
There is more, there is more than gray.

Between the question and the answer
There's the silence of the sea.

Between the cradle and the grave,
There is the someone that is me.

Between yesterday and tomorrow,
There is more there is more than a day.

It is a hauntingly beautiful song, at least in my mind.  It will go on my CD, when I make it.  I must start writing these songs down so I don't forget any when the time comes.

I don't want to, but I must dance the Dance of the Wussburger.  I'm very sleepy and even though "Battlestar Galactica" was quite exciting, it didn't keep me from getting tired (there were two episodes plus a sort of "making of" half-hour show).  Although I didn't nod off while watching it, its "exciting" effects have worn off quite quickly.

In my CD player, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on Monday, I have King:  A Musical Testimony (http://www.castalbumdb.com/rec.cfm?RNumber=604) written by Richard Blackford and Maya Angelou with additional lyrics by Alistair Beaton.  I think it's quite good...although I understand it's been substantially rewritten since this recording was made in 1990.

Media Check:

In the theater: Racing Stripes

DVD: A collection of Superman cartoons, the Disney Tarzan, and disc four of the Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol. 2.

Car CD Player: Soundtrack from the Disney Tarzan, and a trio of Disney Songs cds.

This is because of all the LADSITTING we've been doing.  Der Brucer and I have been substituting for the grandlads' daycare provider, and frankly I'm getting SICK OF IT!!!

The Tarzan score is endlessly played, if we're going to the store or whatever, because they both know all the words and sing along.  If we're watching the television, the set is tuned in to a toon channel, or to animated DVDs.  They even forced me to go into a MacDonalds for lunch the other day!  Those places are EVIL!!!   :P

I'm tired of the testing of limits that have been set, of being lied to about what their parents allow.  I'm tired of the hour-plus drive back, which is always later than we were planning because the lads' parents want to talk (and don't with each other).  And then having to cook dinner when we get home, because the food in family's house is inedible.

Re Racing Stripes, it's a cute film about a Zebra who wants to be a race horse.  The humans in the film don't hear a word that the animals say, but the animals talk a lot, generally using the voices of some well-known actors.  David Spade plays a horsefly, which seems appropriate.  Dustin Hoffman voices a Shetland Pony, which doesn't.  The outcome of the film is obvious almost from the first frame.

We took der B's older grandlad to see the film, because he hasn't had as much personal time with Grandpa, what with his being in school.  (The grandlad, not Grandpa.)  He enjoyed the film.  Me, I think der B owes me one.  Big time.

The pain and suffering continue next week, with MLKJr Day and the day after.  That day will be a lot less than fun, as der B has a doctor's appointment as well, and it will be my duty to keep the two lads under control while he's otherwise occupied.

Bleh.

Good Morning!

Again, I really should be in bed by now...  I guess.. but until then...

In no particular order - CDs:

Movin' Out (OBCR)
Jane Monheit - "Come Dream With Me"
James Naughton - "It's About Time" - I finally gave this one a listen this past week... It seems Mr. Naughton is trying to channel Joe Williams on a few tracks.  Hmmm...
Kurt Elling - "This Time It's Love" - To my ears, Mr. Elling never really seems to hit the center of the pitch.  Maybe it's a jazz thing, but it makes him sound off-key.  Again, at least to my ears.  But I have a friend who is crazy about him, so I picked up a few discs.  Hmm...
Ben Folds Five - "Whatever and Ever Amen" - Still my favorite Ben Folds disc.
"The Songs of Robert Schumann - Vol. 2" - Hyperion Schumann Edition - Simon Keenlyside (love that last name!), baritone, and Graham Johnson, piano.
The Boy from Oz - (OBCR) I forgot Brad Anderson was in this show; he plays the "Trick".  -He was Lt. Cable at Arena Stage two years ago.  Great guy, and he's now in All Shook Up.
Renée Fleming and Bryn Terfel - "Under the Stars" - Finally listened to this one too this week... Hmm...
Randy Newman's Faust (Studio Recording)
Jerry Orbach - "Off Broadway" - In memoriam.
Jane Monheit - "In the Sun"
Das Barbecü (OCR)
Oscar Peterson - "The Gershwin Songbooks"
Two Gentlemen of Verona (OCR)
Charles Ives - "Concord Sonata" and selected Songs - Pierre-Laurent Aimard, piano; Susan Graham, mezzo-soprano
Bach - Partitas Nos. 1, 3 & 6 - Richard Goode, piano. Mr Goode is definitely in my top of 5 of favorite pianists.  Great artistry.

...And that's all so far for this week.  -I have to some music while I'm surfing the web.

DVD: last night - "Being There".  Wonderful movie and who needs Gump.
Cds:  "Call Off the Search" Katie Melua
"Aces Back To Back" Bobby Darin
          "For You" Peter Brocklehurst

Video: "Dance Of the Vampires"  What can I say? Choreography was my favourite aspect I think. Laughing "with" and laughing "at" are different!

Tonight, I had a pleasant movie experience.  After din, I flicked on the telly and first went to TCM which had nothing I wanted to see, then switch to Fox Movie Channel.  An arresting vista with an arresting title song...sung by Jimmie Rodgers, no less...immediately...well, arrested me.  It was the beginning of LONG, HOT SUMMER...a motion picture entertainment that has escaped me all these years.  So The Lovely Wife (who had seen it before) and I settled into watch it.  This happens to me a lot with older films.  Something will just hook me in seconds and I'm there to the bitter end.  The very fine song was written by Sammy Cahn and Alex North, who also wrote the very fine score (North...not Cahn).  Anyway, the movie had a whole mess of fine players.  Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Orson Welles (in fine scenery-chewing form), Lee Remick, Anthony Franciosa, and Angela Lansbury.  The script was of a high literary quality by Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank...very smart and witty and great mouth-watering speeches for actors.  All the actors were fine and Martin Ritt directed with a sure hand.

It also oozed with sensuality.  The overt sexuality of the film was quite remarkable for 1958.  Lansbury obviously screwing Welles.  Welles telling Woodward, he's going to make her marry that "bull", that "stud' Newman, making it very clear without ever saying  it  that Richard Anderson's character is homosexual and is never going marry Woodward (Welles' character calls him a "sissy").

Fine moovin' picture!  We should have stopped there.

Unfortunately, we decided to watch one of the screeners I got, which through some psychic premonition I had been avoiding, called BEFORE SUNSET (a film that has inexplicably gotten a WGA nod for best screenplay).  Fifteen minutes into this irritating piece of pompous flatulence, The Lovely Wife turned to me and said, "You know what I think about this film...?"  In another psychic burst, I said: "It's trying too hard to be naturalistic."  Which is indeed what she was thinking.  We finally decided toward the end that this was actually one of those pretentious French films in English.  It's the kind of a film that only seems weighty in a Foreign language, but if we actually knew what they were saying, it would be utter, self-absorbed, pseudo-serious drivel.

And I may vomit on the ground from the bad Indian food I had tonight. This is the first Indian meal I've had since moving back to LA - used to eat Indian food at least once a week in Boulder. This was not good. Not good at all. My Chicken Masala did not taste like chicken. Everything tastes like chicken. Hence the phrase, "It tastes just like chicken." So how can chicken not taste like chicken?? Just asking.

Good morning, all!  Another B&N day, and I'm still dragging through my morning ablutions.  I've got two jobs to do this week, one for concert and one for recording, so I most likely will be watching or listening to very little.

Right now, JEEPERS CREEPERS is playing, and I just got the NEW MOON recording from Rodgers & Hamerstein, which I want to follow with the score.  Perhaps I'll do that this evening after I lay out one of the two charts I have to do.

I'm happy to see DRGinny has committed to March 19.  Any other out-of-towners making plans?

Listen to My Heart (Nancy LaMott) Looking forward to her new cd coming out: Live At The Tavern on the Green.
Matt Bogart: Simple Song Which DR Elmoore did some of the orchestrations. The others I am, guessing were culled from previous recorded material. The Rain Song sounds as if it came from 110 In the Shade that Ron Raines recorded

One of my favourites from last year.  Sooooo many people were disappointed with it ~ those who wanted full on horror.  I saw it from a completely different angle .. was quite moved  :'(   by the beauty of the performances and the story in general.

i found this on line to add a little more info about Ice Station Zebra and Cinerama

A bit of history. Back in the early 60s MGM made a deal with Cinerama, Inc. to film 5 productions in the original 3 camera/projector process. Two films were made that way: "How The West Was Won" and "The Wonderful World Of The Brothers Grimm." MGM, because of high production costs as well as the immense dificulty in filming in the process then decided to switch to single camera 70mm processes for the final 3 films. Cinerama, Inc. by that time had been purchased by Pacific Theatres who immediately abandonded the original process and ceased all developement of a true single camera system that would have approximated the 146 degree view of the original 3 camera Cinerama. Since Cinerama Inc was in financial difficulties they agreed to let MGM use the name for 3 other films: "Grand Prix", "Ice Station Zebra" and "2001: A Space Odyssey" only when the films were actually presented in theatres that had true Cinerama screens. Eventually a whole slew of films from several movie companies used the "Presented In Cinerama" nomenclature for theatrical showings. None of them were the "reel" thing.

Well we saw ICE STATION ZEBRA in the local Cinerama theatre - and not knowing the difference, thought it was good.  It had a lot of "stars" and a souvenir book and expensive seats.  I saw it with a group of friends, and liked it.  Liked the music and the story.  Saw it recently on TCM and will probably buy the DVD.  Not a great movie, and probably I like it because of when and who and where I saw it - but it's okay.

About last night's figure skating.

I just didn't see what you saw with Kwan. I found her jumps perfunctory, lacking flair. Yes, she was expressive in the quiet moments of the program, and "Spartacus" is always great music to skate to, but the jumps were just there and the combination even a little stiff and slow.

I found Kirk's and Biatrissa Liang's jumps to show much more flair and expression. And I agree that Liang deserved to be top 3. Cohen should have been fourth or fifth instead of second.

All of the movies that played at our CInerama theater, the Carolina, after HOW THE WEST WAS WON - and that included THE SOUND OF MUSIC (for well over a year), DR> ZHIVAGO, 2001, ICE STATION ZEBRA, STAR, HELLO DOLLY, PAINT YOUR WAGON) - did not use the entire width of the Cinerama screen. There were curtains that could be opened to just the amount of screen that was being used, and I remember a fair amount of curtain on either side that never went all of way over.

BTW, I noticed on THE GREAT WHITE HOPE that Fox has included both the widescreen and fullscreen editions of the film. Why on earth they'd bother to port over a full screen version of a film originally shot in Panavision, I don't know. I hope the bit rate of the widescreen transfer doesn't suffer and end up looking terrible. I'll see later.

bk, WHAT A WAY TO GO! was not a box-office bomb. It was ranked 7th on the list of the top grossing films of 1964. Now, I don't know what it cost to make, and maybe the gross was disappointing in comparison to its cost, but it was not a bomb.

Perhaps you're thinking of MacLaine's next star vehicle, JOHN GOLDFARB, PLEASE COME HOME which was a bomb.

DR Michael, I haven't read which version they're going to release, but my guess would be the (shorter) director's cut since that is the version that got a VHS release most recently.

DARLING LILI is set to be the shorter director's cut (which, for once, I actually prefer) with the deleted scenes (mostly aerial footage) as part of the special features.  Still not a word as to whether Blake and Julie will do a commentary track; I for one would love to hear them talk about the infamous "I'm the only queen on this set" comment.

As for WHAT A WAY TO GO! I enjoyed it as much this week as I did when I saw it at the drive-in when it was first out.  (Of course then, I was a wee lad of 8, and mostly I remember - in addition to the wealth of actors - Mum sitting and counting each of the costumes Ms. MacLaine wore).  But, that's what makes horse racing; I still enjoy the film and the Comden and Green script, the Nelson Riddle score and the Kelly + MacLaine production number.

Didn't the director's cut of DARLING LILI ax the children's song featured on the film score recording? Seems like it did, but I haven't seen it in so long that I may have it confused with something else.

I liked What a Way to Go! when I was a kiddie as well....."Hop hop hop to Hopper's.....a little hard work never killed anybody!"  LOL....but I also liked MdClaine's "Woman Times Seven" which was kind of weird, and for a long time afterwards, I used to get scenes from each one mixed up in my head.

As for the skating....hmmmmmm....I only watched the Men's Short Program, and will watch the men's Free Skate later today...LIVE!  Not much interested in the ladies for some reason - don't really care who wins.  Kwan and the others are pretty boring.  I am still stuck in the Peggy Fleming/Carol Heiss era of pretty skating without so many jumps.....

ANYWAY - Cohen seems to be a pain in neck and I might watch just hoping to see her fall down.....

Getting ready for the Putnam County Playhouse Fundraiser which is next Saturday in case anyone wants to come.  Dan Stockton and I will be doing our "Lovely" number from FORUM......"You didn't tell me I'd have to be a girl......"

And "Farenheit 451" is on TCM tonight.

HMMMMMMM....LI'L ABNER and DARLING LILI on DVD - I better start saving my money.

I LOVE LUCY the third season is also coming out in February!

Last night I went to the house of friends who were showing off their new wide screen television set.  The main attraction of the evening was--The Village.  Having seen it last summer, I settled into my seat prepared to be a little bit bored.  But I found myself totally drawn into it, this time paying more attention to the actual movie than looking for clews about the big surprise twist.  It really is a lovely movie in many ways and I think I will have to buy a copy for myself.

I am being offered a free ticket for tonight to the Disney-produced On The Record, which is a revue of Disney songs that's playing here in Philly.  Evidently, it's been doing horrible business and they are comping the heck out of it.  I haven't heard one good thing about it but I just may go anyway since it's playing at the Kimmel Center and I'm curious about how they set up for a B'way style show.

What did you think of it?

One of my favourites from last year.  Sooooo many people were disappointed with it ~ those who wanted full on horror.  I saw it from a completely different angle .. was quite moved  :'(   by the beauty of the performances and the story in general.

POSSIBLE VILLAGE AND CRYING GAME SPOILERS AHEAD

Well - I didn't see "the twist" coming, and I usually smell twists a mile off (knew the twist in THE CRYING GAME almost as soon as we met the "twisted" character).
So, I kept thinking that it was pretentious and that the monsters were really silly. Then, when the twist was revealed, I suddenly understood everything and it became a different film for me. In the end, I rather liked it. I actually wouldn't mind looking at it again, knowing what the twist is, to see how that colors things. When I watched THE SIXTH SENSE a second time, it was a totally different experience. Very interesting (an Arte Johnson reference).

Portland is a sheet of ice this morning, so we are not going to services and the kids don't have Shabbat School.  It may even snow later.  Yay!!!

Ice Station Zebra:  I actually saw this on a double feature with 2001.  I had missed the first release of 2001 and had read the big "making of" book and also Clarke's novelization, and I really wanted to see it, so my Dad took me to ICZ so that we could stay for the second feature.  I remember impatiently sitting through ICZ for the second feature, which was occasionally marred by my father's snoring (he fell asleep about 5 minutes into 2001).

Darling Lili:  There is a lot of discussion on several listserves I subscribe to about the edited version of this.  (Why no brouhaha about the edited DVD of Hawaii--and have you all written your letters to David Bishop?  :) ).  I have never seen Darling Lili in any version--do any of you have the unedited version you could dub for me and I will trade something magnificent from either my video or music collection?

Spyware/Adware update:  If you can believe this, after AOL Spyware found 18 programs (from a mere 2 downloads), Norton found another 20 or so.  These all have to have come from my sound recorder downloads, as I do regular weekly scans and have never had any spyware/adware up to this time.  It boggles my mind.  I've been able to get rid of everything with the exception of one solitary DLL file, which I don't think is able to do anything since its associated program has been nuked.  This has taught me a big lesson about freeware.

...Just as CP's close and personal friend, Harlan Ellison did one year at the WGA Awards. I think it was because of 9/11 - or perhaps some other somber reason - but we were asked to wear "working attire."
Ellison, who was a presenter, walked onstage in his pajamas and robe, saying, "This is what I wear to write."

So nice to find some other figure skating fans here.  I stayed up 'way too late last night (for someone who had to be at work at 9am!) watching the short programs.  Wondering if we'll see more abandon/expression in the free skates today?  I think often they skate pretty carefully to get in all those elements that are required in the short program.

I am somewhat infamous not only for guessing twists in movies (especially those featuring Chubby Checker), but also announcing them so that everyone (usually Dear Spouse) can be notified of exactly when I figured them out.

I have not seen The Village, nor read much about it, but I think I have already guessed the twist (as I did with Sixth Sense just from the trailer).  Would someone who's seen it PM the twist so that I can confirm my suspicions?

SPOILER ALERT--TWIST GUESSING:

I think it has something to do with, to quote Rodgers & Hart, "Where or when."

Matt Bogart: Simple Song Which DR Elmoore did some of the orchestrations. The others I am, guessing were culled from previous recorded material. The Rain Song sounds as if it came from 110 In the Shade that Ron Raines recorded

Yes, I believe that's true.  I did  "Tell My Father" for Sean McDermott and Mr Yap used the same instrumental track for John Barrowman and Matt, I believe.

Panni - what a swell pic of you watching TeeVee in your nightynight dress and hat!

I did love What A Way To Go way back when. I loved the costumes, and the whole silly fantasy of it. Loved the Art Machine that painted to music! Loved all the fluff and jokes and all the just plain SILLY!! I still look at it sometimes, when it's on TeeVee - only now, I can leave and come back whenever I feel like it, rather than stay riveted to the drama as I used to...

Didn't the director's cut of DARLING LILI ax the children's song featured on the film score recording? Seems like it did, but I haven't seen it in so long that I may have it confused with something else.

Yes that is one of the sequences that was cut. (The Little Birds/La Petitte Oiseau (sp?).

I don't think any of the other songs were cut. I am sure there had to be more scenes cut than just so sky shots. There was almost a half hour cut from the film. Originally 136 minutes then 107 minutes. There is another cut at 114 minutes

Which come to another question. Hawaii is also being released I have seen the roadshow version of it (I think it was). There is a brief bit where Julie is singing (sort of) called My Wishing Doll. Was the song ever sung in its entirity in the film?

And BTW the cover art for the DVD is sooooooooooooo ugly. I think I would have prefered the orignal poster art or at least the vhs two disk release.

Hawaii:  No, the song was never sung in its entirety (but Percy Faith does a beautiful rendition on his 1966 album of movie themes).  I beg, beg, beg all of you to write David Bishop at the address I provided a few days ago to protest that Hawaii is being released on DVD in its edited version.  I have waited years for this to be released (I had hoped Julie would do a commentary--that doesn't seem to be happening either).  There is no excuse for releasing the edited version of this--they've already released the unedited version on both VHS and laserdisc.  It, like spyware/adware, boggles the mind.

Well...It's finally happened.  The technological revolt.  There was a big article in the paper yesterday about people curbing their use of the web, fed up with the influx of virus, spam, and spy-ware invasion and the fact that you need a masters degree to fix these things or spend sometimes more money than the computer cost to have an expert do it.

"2004 was a turning point in a bad direction.  People are getting really angry .  They're angry at Dell and Microsoft and their cable providers and that's appropriate.  They should be."

31% of online shoppers said they were buying less because of security concerns.  US internet users paying for things online barely budged in 2004 from the year earlier.  It rose from 26% to 27% in 2003 after jumping from 20% in 2002.

"If as an industry, we're not able to provide a safe, reliable computing environment, we do think the consumer will get increasingly frustrated."

One consumer who has been consistently ahead in the computer age in purchasing this kind of technology and who finally yanked out his high-speed internet connection said: "It's (the computer) is great for anything you can do on your own.  It seems to me an incredible typewriter -- and that's it."

All this might be a good thing.  Maybe people will actually start getting out in the open air and mingling again and engaging and interacting in life once more...instead of letting their life be dominated by some screen.

JRand54, is your Half-Price Books one of the chain that emanates out of Dallas?  I know they have been making some excursions in to the midwest.  When I lived in Dallas between '74-'78, the original store was right down the street from me and was magnificent.  I was in Big "D" this past fall to speak to a local screenwriting group there and I went to their new location.  And, Wow! Good morning / afternoon / night to one and all.
That should cover all the time zones.

I have been a semi-wussburger the past few days.  I have, of course, read all of BK's daily columns, as well as all of the posts.  However, I have posted only a few times, and only when it was something earth-shattering (to me).

I did two school performances of NATIONAL PASTIME on Wednesday, and by the time I got home from the theater, I had come down with the dreaded cold that everyone in the cast and crew (but me) had suffered through in the last two weeks.  Because of this nasty cold, Thursday was a horribly long day at work.  I kept visualizing myself curled up in a ball on top of my desk sleeping the day away.  But no such luck.

Thursday night's performance of NATIONAL PASTIME was an all-time low for me.  I blew lines, garbled speeches, and did lots of paraphrasing just to try to make it through the performance without making Branch Rickey look like a totally moronic idiot.  The rest of the cast was very supportive and kept telling me I was doing fine, but I didn’t believe it for a second.  Unfortunately, Thursday night was also the night that the playwright was in the house.  After the show, I was too sick and too embarrassed by my inept performance to go out front and face the audience and the playwright.  I will, however, have to face the playwright in about three hours when the cast, the playwright, and assorted special guests gather for a public discussion on the play itself, and on race relations in and out of sports, in general.

Last night’s performance was much improved over Thursday’s show.  Other than my over-abundance of saliva during certain long speeches, my biggest gaff was renaming the segregationist term Jim Crow, into the totally ridiculous and nonexistent John Crow.  Hopefully, during the final two performances tonight and tomorrow afternoon, I can bring my performance back up to the level that this work deserves.

DR Charles, the Jimmie Rodgers song is readily available on "Best of" collections.  It was the "B" side of "Oh Oh I'm falling In Love Again". Problem in finding Jimmie at Amazon used to be the confusion with the older Jimmie Rodgers and his Railroad/blues songs.
I think the pop'folk "Honeycomb" singer has now been given his middle initial to distinguish the recordings. "Bear Family" discs are all the older Rodgers.

TCB - I could pull up the old cliche - "It probably wasn't as bad as you thought..." ...And it probably wasn't. But even if it was - ain't nothing can be done about it, so life goes on. I have a feeling that if, rather than feeling low and ashamed, you go up to the playwright when you see him today, sincerely tell him how much the play itself and your participation in it has meant to you -- and then explain what lead to the performanc he witnessed - artfully throwing in the positive responses you had been getting up until that very evening - he will be just fine.
I'm sending POSITIVE VIBES YOUR WAY!

well, a general hell to everybody from way downunder!

watched "de-lovely" last night.  thought the performances were wonderful, as well as the general construction of the film ... so glad they did not use the original ending.  also thought it a nice touch that there was a momentary tribute to "night and day" in it.

regrettably the film was treated as an 'art house' release here, so it did not get the large audiences it deserves.

Got both DVDs watched this afternoon. I first saw BUTLEY in my early 20s as a recent college graduate working on my master's degree, and I remember at the time finding the character of Ben Butley irritating and infuriating.

Amazing now that I'm a retired teacher and much, much older that I see him for the monster he actually was. I think at such a young age I wasn't fully capable of realizing how monstrous he was to one and all. I laughed more than I cringed at his treatment of his students and to those who were close to him in his personal life. I found nothing amusing watching it today. Oh, I admired the wit behind the sarcasm and word play, but it was so cruel, so vile that I couldn't laugh. I was appalled.

Theatre is magic, DR TCB - one way or another.  And it's live!  Yup, that's what the audience is there for....to see it done live....in the same room.  And who's to say....Branch surely didn't do his lines as written!

Yes DRCP - Half Price Books aka Half Price Books and Records is part of the chain you mention.  There is one in Greenwood south of Indy and in Fishers just north of Indy.  It's fun - especially the books that sell for 25 cents and 50 cents.  I always fill up a basket there first.  Also found a first edition of ATLAS SHRUGGED there and with a 15% off coupon I had, got it for $35!!  Great place for travel books and picture books and books on movies and television and bios and art books.  OMG - now I have to go there.

DR TCB, we have all been through that kind of torturous performance, so I know how you felt, and with the playwright there, I'm sure you were embarrassed, but don't worry about it. It's history now, and you have other performances to rectify things.

I love that moment in the COMPANY documentary where Susan Browning, I believe, says that performances are in the moment and then they're gone and you get to do it again. Only recordings are permanent. Same rationale here.

THE GREAT WHITE HOPE looked fine (though some scenes had that same brown tint that was present in STAR! Can't remember if the film was done that way or not. It's been too long since I saw it at the theater.)

Fox did give each version (full screen and widescreen) its own side of the flipper disc, but stupidly put the proper one - the widescreen enhanced one - on side B.

I wanted to mention that thanks to DR Mbarnum, I discovered my favorite candy/chocolate ever ... peanut butter m&ms.  They are not sold everywhere here. But if you look you can find them. They are so unbelievably good.

I did notice peanut butter smarties at one store. I wonder if they are equally good (smarties here are similar to m&ms but a bit wider, like if you pounded an m&m).

I'm going on a diet/exercise regime on monday. So i must get in some good eating before then. :)

I also did not like DE-LOVELY at all. The music was not well served, there were so many factual errors with song and character placements in the story that I was constantly being taken out of the movie to comment on something I found fictional or anachronistic. I also did not like the framing device at all.

Hi all!

The title of today's notes is the name of a flower that I have in my garden.  It starts out blue and turns white as the day goes one.  It smells wonderful.

I'm still turning the trip over in my mind.  Just so you know, MR BK, I had a nightmare last night about buying coats.  I went from store to store to try to get them but they ran out  just as I got there!  :'( :D

Then I had a nicer dream about Michael Ball.

I see that DR Panni has decided to make the trip as well as DR Michael.    So where are you planning on staying?

TCB, I'm sure that what you consider your worst is better then a lot of peoples best.  I wish I could make the trip to see your play as well.  Some day I will go to the left coast.

Things, here in Salem anyway, have thawed out, but the news reports say that we are to get it again this evening...and yet my friends are still planning to go out tonight in Portland (which got it much worse then Salem).....so, I guess I will be creeping up I-5 to meet them and hopefully not get caught in an ice storm (otherwise I guess I will be spending the night in Portland because I ain't gonna drive in it!).

I've just come back from having my hair trimmed and highlighted by a wonderful hairdresset I met at bk's Christmas do. I do believe the results are quite good. Unfortunately, DD has left for San Francisco for the weekend to move her stuff into her new place (she'll be back for her birthday) and cannot take my picture with my new (not exactly new, but slightly different) look.
I also had the car washed.
Isn't that exciting?

Now I must decide whether I want to go to a screening of THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES tomorrow. There was a message waiting for me with an invitation from a Hungarian friend (not in Hungary). But the screening is over the hill, and I could see it in the Valley (I think...) and do far less traveling. Also, it's during the day and I should really be working. I will have to think over this huge problem while I walk the Wonderdog.

I do not like COUSCOUS as a solo or a medley.

I hated aspargus when I was a wee sprig of a twig of a tad of a lad of a youth.  But I know love aspargus, as long as they are fresh and drenched in either butter, hollandaise, or some sort of gloppy salad dressing, i.e. Thousand Island.

I just finished watching "The Village".  Happily, I was unfamiliar with whatever "TZ" episode others thought tipped off the twist ending (which was revealed a bit earlier than I'd have thought it might have been).

I like the filmmaker, but this story was a bit drawn out, even if I didn't "guess" at what was up.  There were lots of red herrings, including the flags...the "safe" color (which I thought was based on the malaria flags ships used to fly) being one of them.

An enjoyable couple of hours, though.

Ice Skating:  I have to say I've never been overly fond of, or impressed with, Timothy Goebel.   Today, his marks were way too high for what little he did on the ice.  Those marks, contrasted with the much-too-low marks given to Matt Savoie, perpetuates the problems with the 6.0 scoring system, rewarding not what the skater does in a given performance as much as what the judges consider him capable of doing.

Goebel also irked me greatly over his turning the death of a friend's mother into something more about himself.  He milked his grief for sympathy on ice and it was nauseating to me.  I saw him in an interview a month or so ago after he withdrew from a competiton for reasons I believed to be because he had skated too poorly to medal, and he was as vapid in conversation as he appears to be with his perpetually glazed-over look.

He's an "ice princess" and nothing more.

Johnny Weir very much deserved his victory.

Ooh!  Ooh!

Am I the only skating fan who thinks that Evan Lysacek looks like "Chachi"?

I thought he was too generously scored, as well.  His choreography left me gaping incredulously as he'd be with the music, and then ignore the music, then be with another bit of music, and then ignore a huge chunk of music.  He was "musical" when it suited him rather than throughout the routine.

I guess the judges wanted to encourage a new face.  Savoie was much, much better than Lysacek or Goebel.

Yes, I agree DR RLP....I think Savoie should have gotten a second place, and I also agree about Miss Goebel's tearful outbursts....he certainly didn't show any signs of it a couple of minutes later when he was shown while waiting for Miss Weir's marks.  Oh well.....Evan surprised me ending up in third.....but the scoring will change soon.

But in a mere five minutes I shall mosey over to the dinner party.  I'm hoping that Dee Dee has made her famous appetizer - which is some kind of melted cheesy thing with onions on English Muffins.  It's quite yummilicious and if she has made them I'm afraid I shall just have to eat them all up without regard to others who may be in attendance and has anyone noticed that this has turned into one of those run-on sentences that just goes on and on with no punctuation in sight so please someone throw me a period or a colon or if you can't afford the colon send me a semi-colon or a comma or.  Whew.  Well, that sentence just took a minute, so in a mere two minutes I shall be on my way.

Oh, well, he's too busy reading the four one-line posts since he asked, so my answer will have to wait until my returning.  Keep the home fries burning until my returning.  I'm SO hungry.

We have a roaring fire in the fireplace.  We have gone nowhere the entire day.  Betsy spent the day reading.  I watched (or at least tried to--I gave up at the hour mark) the most horrid movie I've seen in a long time, John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars.  It has been, even with the horrid movie, a sublime day.  The weather outside is frightful.

Whew!  What a long, self-indulgent rant.  But where else can I go, but to my HHW family, to pour out the “woe is me” saga of my life?
Well earned vibes to TCB

Ooh, and a Toninho Horta CD is playing.  For those of you who have mentioned various Brasilian artists, if you haven't checked out Toninho, you really should.  Absolutely superb guitar and vocals, a mix of Jobim and Metheny.

Panni I’m glad you are pleased with your new hairdresser.

I have been missing the ice skating.   :(

This afternoon we went to a new framing store and were very pleased.  In two weeks we shall find out if we are still happy-I bet we will be.

Afterwards we went out to dinner, the first time in a long while.  It was very nice.

Now I think we will watch a DVD.  Goodnight.

Killing time is a CRIME!

Think of all the people who don't have enough time!
Time to kill!
Time to waist!
Crimes! crimes!

Ah... but... on the underneath!
I mean... ah... but... time to save! Yes!
Time to waist!?  It must be SUPPERTIME!

(Chicken soup, with rice and mushrooms, and just a bit of ginger.  Yummers.)

FYI

Eurodisney does NOT exist anymore -- since 1994 --
It is DISNEYLAND PARIS Resort!

http://www.disneylandparis.com/index2.htm

Now the Resort is managed by a Company whose name is

Euro Disney SCA.

I believe garbage cans at the French Resort have MERDE printed on them.... in ALL languages! :D

Nope, I won't be disagreeing about the box-office performance of ICE STATION ZEBRA. It was not a success either artistically or commercially.

In fact, after its disappointing performance, VARIETY did an article about how badly recent top box-office draws had done recently. Taylor and Burton were slapped on the wrist for BOOM, Jerry Lewis for a string of low grossing movies, Shirley MacLaine for SWEET CHARITY, Doris Day for CAPRICE (though WITH SIX YOU GET EGGROLL had been a hit), Natalie Wood for PENELOPE, Julie Andrews for STAR, and Rock Hudson was cited for SECONDS and ICE STATION ZEBRA.

I guess it's common knowledge that ICE STATION ZEBRA was Howard Hughes' favorite movie once her became a hermit. He had a print screened almost daily for his pleasure. Maybe it put him to sleep.

The party was low key and fun. I stayed much longer than I had planned. The host had figure skating on in his living room, so I popped in there to watch the women. This was not a great year for female performances despite Messner's triple axel (which was sloppy and unflowing) and Kwan's grace.

As for the men, I second that Matt Savoie really got robbed this year. I'm wondering if the judges weren't having a knee jerk reaction to his performance at world's last year. He finished out of the top ten, and I'm wondering if they weren't anxious to send him back on the risk that he might choke again.

In my DVD player (actually, now taken out...I just watched it) was the DVD-R of Annie Get Your Gun with Mary Martin, by kind courtesy of MattH!  I'm glad you liked 1776.  Anyway, here's a minature version of what I did for the AGYG cover.  Very simply, it's just the Angel Broadway CD and a picture of Mary as Annie:

Glad the show went well, Jose.

I'm watching Moulin Rouge.  They chose the worst POSSIBLE points to put in commercials.  One literaly cut Christian off in the middle of a song.  I mean, can't they hear that it's in the middle of a song?!?  But still, I like the movie...

DR Michael Shayne - Since no one really seemed to answer the question...

I asked BK about what size iPod he got, I can't remember how many GIGs he got, but he got the "smaller" one of the standard sized iPods.

As for ditching your CD collection.... Well, first you have to transfer your CD collection to the iPod, so...  And, then, god forbid, you lose your iPod, or something happens to it... and you had already ditched your CDs...

Most people I know still keep their CDs.  The main purpose of the iPod is portability.  It cannot replace CDs since it will need a source for the songs it stores - and, yes, you can download from iTunes and other places, but not everything is online.
Title: Re:YESTERDAY, TODAY, AND TOMORROW
Post by: bk on January 15, 2005, 11:15:28 PM
First off, the iPod will never supplant anything.  It's just for fun, and to have a lot of music in one place for when I'm working and/or traveling.  I got the 20gig version, which holds about 5000 songs.  I cannot imagine a scenario when I will have 5000 songs in there.  The bigger one (in gigs not size) is the 40, but that has more memory so you can store photos, too.

DR Michael Shayne:

Back on January 12, 2005, I asked BK:

Quote
BK - So, which model iPod did you get?  A regular?  mini?  How many Gigs?  What color?  Did you get any accessories?  The microphone?  The cool looking earphones?

*And remember, you can also use your iPod as a temporary storage device should you need to backup anything on your PowerBook.

And BK Answered:

Quote
I got the 20gig version, which only comes in white.  I thought about the mini, but I could see no upside or downside to either, and the mini isn't that much smaller.  For now I just have the headphones that came - I may go back and get the dock and the wireless car kit.
