Well, you've read the notes, the notes were good and ugly, and now it is time for you to post until the good and ugly cows come home.

Around 9:30 I will head down to City Center with the last two numbers for Me & My Girl.  My Miami U friend Roy is meeting me this afternoon. We'll visit and go to dinner.  We may see a show.  I have no idea what.

They did a production of THE GRASS HARP in the SFV back in, I believe, the late 1970s, with Susan Watson and Chris Costello.

Great show.

Still have the OBC  CD.

(If it's not here today, I'll ask if the package people here just forgot to leave a pick-up slip.)

Nothing much in the CD player lately.  Hmm...

UNDERWORLD, U.S.A. is in the Blu-ray player, and it's fantastic but I need to get through it in one sitting.  I've now watched two-thirds of it in two sittings, and that's got to stop.

I finally caved in and read the GEE spoiler stuff on Amazon.  But I've been careful not to spill anything I saw there to Skip.

One thing I've got to get back to is entering some more of my friend's show into Finale.  That serves as my learning project and helps move things along for him, but it fell by the wayside when I started getting busy with shows again after the post-holiday lull.  This means I'm going to have to re-learn some stuff and move on past whatever the last challenge was.  Which, oy!, I just remembered what it is, and that I'd hit a wall with it.  Voices and layers, the implementation and management of which was driving me nuts.

I also have to see what's new in the upgrade I finally (get it?) went for.  Had to bite the bullet and get the current release because the version I'd been using just fine on Windows doesn't run well on the Sierra OS on the Mac, and they've made it abundantly clear that they aren't going to support that any more so you pretty much have to upgrade on the Mac and I wanted to be consistent on both platforms.  Actually, that can be today's project -- bringing the MacBook up to the desk and installing that.

Now wasn't that fascinating??

Controversy Warning, since I know my thoughts on any irony of Wahlberg (an unapologetic physically violent person into his early 20's) getting a million bucks to wipe out Spacey's performance  from a film seems to have no agreement here:

I guess I should say I don't think it's an outrage of any kind about the Wahlberg - Spacey thing, just a real irony.  I know Rapp (Spacey's target and victim) was only 14 when the Spacey thing happened to him, or really the moves were made and I guess the legal line not crossed),  but I think with sadness of all the people over the years who would have been spared being Spacey's targets, and spared Spacey the total ruin that happened (the way Broadway's James Barbour did a little time and now gets big jobs again), had Rapp just said something when he was already really famous in New York at least in his 20's.  Rapp seemed to have held the info in until the moment that would (and of course did) bring the maximum ruination to Spacey.  (Rapp was already pretty well-known and prominent at least in New York, and people were really paying attention to what he said and did, by 1996 when RENT hit Broadway.)

:)  Unless Bk says not to, I plan to keep tackling the issues here on HHW until this site gets the Pulitzer Prize consideration it deserves.  :)

When we lived in Bloomfield, Michigan Tim Allen was arrested for drunk driving about the same time Craig was driving home on the same street as the arrest.  While I held no grudges Allen had become a success after serving time in prison I was furious he was released on the DUI without consequences.

I have been receiving a lot of calls on my cell phone from local, Ashland included, businesses soliciting.  Today I asked the local caller how he got my cell number.  He said it is public information now and I am not on the "do not call" list.

I looked it up and as far as I can tell cell phone numbers are still private.

I also ranted to the guy how rude cell phone calls are because they ring in public places.

Now I get worried every time I see an email with someone's name and accomplishments starting the email that it's going to be an obituary.

I got an email that started something like "[so and so], acclaimed award-winning star of the Metropolitan Oper" and the subject was cut off, and I was saying "Oh no, she's so young" - but I clicked and it was just an ad for an appearance somewhere that I'm on the mailing list.  Whew!

I'm looking at an old email.  So a collaborator had disappeared (really, no responses to emails or calls for IIRC three weeks) and we were concerned.  She finally wrote that her aunt was sick in Connecticut, the aunt was like a second mother to her, and she's so sorry to have been out of communication despite getting all our emails.

We asked if she needed anything, any help at task in NY while she was in Connecticut.  I think I said I hope she'll just drop us a quick one line email just to let us know she's gone on a family matter.  (Indeed, since she had a whole history of getting upset and not communicating for a while before, we never knew if she was gone on a trip without telling us, was upset about something and stayed quiet for a while, stuck in a project for work, so we didn't know if she was even still on the project not hearing any answers for about 3 weeks.)  She didn't understand why I thought a quick one-line email could be necessary.  A few months later, when she got upset about something else, an email ending with:

"By the way, my dead aunt thanks you for your generosity of allowing me to spend time at her death bed earlier this year."

Fred, have you figured out if you are coming out here in June?

I'm going to have to see how finances are after April 15.  It's not the kind of situation where we're involved in rehearsals, but since they're going to use the Battle scene we workshopped at the Village rather than what's in the CD, I'd like to make the trip.

or maybe they could video the Battle scene (maybe even the big numbers in general).  It would be great to have a video of the numbers at least if that's allowed under the non-union rules at that theater for the actors.

That was never possible for the two NYC productions; those two were both Equity, and there were real costs and Equity rules, of course.

An evil little voice in my brain wishes a fly on the wall would "tape" a cherce handful of those auditions for our viewing pleasure.  Someone make it stop!!!

I went to acupuncture today, then to the optician, picked up some lunch, and went to Trader Joe's. Such is my life.

It would be great to have a video of the numbers at least if that's allowed under the rules that cover the actors.  That was never possible for the NYC Equity productions.

Do you know if this is an Equity production, or would they just operate under Equity rules because they can?

Sorry if my first post was confusing.  I'll go back and word it better just in case.

Both of the NYC productions (in the Storm Theatre's 2004-5 season, and then at NYMF in the same year as BK and Brain...) were Equity.  Definitely couldn't film them without paying a lot, (or maybe otherwise everyone saying yes, I guess?)

Second Story will definitely be non-union.  I think this link for the auditions last month is still live and generally reachable.

I was wondering if you might know if its being non-union means they can video the songs as long as everyone in the cast agrees.

I recall once we had company and we all were talking making demos at home, and Skip said "My amp died yesterday" and a friend said "I'm so sorry, Skip, you could have cancelled on us tonight."  We all looked at the friend strangely.  Turned out the friend thought Skip had said "My aunt died."

RIP to Skip's aunt amp.

Thanks for the reaction, George!

I'm here all week.  (Luckily, of course, the week is over tomorrow.)

Oh my, this is not a stable person.

I am thinking of putting my number on the no call list even if it isn't necessary.  I just have this little worry that then it would make my cell number public.

I went ahead put my cell phone number on the Do Not Call list anyway because I would (fortunately rarely) get automatically dialed calls that didn't check the list. :P

Thanks.  I will probably do it.

Oh my, this is not a stable person.

I don't think unstable, but manipulative.  She wanted to disappear for a while for as long as she wanted, whenever she felt like it.  The other 3 in the group treated it as a serious business collaboration, and it was frustrating when a question would be asked that should take 5 minutes to answer, but somehow the answer took six days.  It's so interesting looking at old emails, how much can happen and you often "forget it" a week later if you feel the piece you're working on is a worthy goal, assuming the person's talent is worth the trouble.

Unbelievably, I saw in looking stuff up about this other person years agoi that BK and I then had an email exchange that looks like it was happening both during a tax season and also right in the middle of a testy exchange with this person.  And I guess the testiness to the other person was affecting the thought I was giving to what i was writing to BK, as I think Bk was surprised by my tone. Context is everything.  (I hope I called BK after that to apologize, since i didn't see an apology from me to him in an email.  Or maybe I did so on here.  if not, BK, sorry for something you don't remember.  :)  )

Question, do you use one space after a period or two?  Reading the posts it looks like most everyone uses two.

If your answer is 2 spaces, do you use only one when writing professionally.

I am asking because I was surprised our condo manager mentioned he has been taken to task for doing two spaces ;D

I learned to type in high school (graduated in 1984) and I learned two spaces after a period.  I don't have to change that style for my work, so I won't.  I know our communications department has specific formatting rules, but that's for them, and not for the regular employees.

I had thought either is correct, however, it seems officially it is one space.  I am glad you don't have to change for work.  I personally think it is easier to read two spaces vs one.

BK - To clarify, when I said Skip asked, I meant Skip has been asking me about the book; he didn't know to ask the folks in the package place.  Thanks for the delivery info.

The US post office employees around here really don't care. (I'm told it's a very different work ethic even in NJ somehow.)  FedEx and UPS are normally very diligent, and USPS is not, so USPS loses business to FedEx and UPS because of bad USPS service, where no one can lose their job except for really bad behavior.  And now D.C. blames Amazon for USPS troubles.

Not a post. Not texts, emails, letters, anything like that. But people do it at work and removing them is extra work on top of everything else. And they're not consistent in their use. So, it's often a guessing game. But it does mess things up if the extra space is not removed.

I have a co-worker that for just about EVERY e-book that she buys, she (when she's able) strips the DRM from the e-book (both epub and Kindle) so that she can reformat them the way that SHE wants them.  Evidently, Kindle e-books can have either too much or too little space in between paragraphs, or some are formatted where she can't make changes through her device, things like that.  I know she reads a lot of e-books, but to automatically do that for practically every one is (to me) kind of ridiculous.  Just read the darned book, is what I say...but not to her, of course. ;)

Back from a rather horrid production of Deathtrap - won't say much in the notes, but you know what you're in for when the big scenes are scored with music by Bernard Herrmann (as is the between scene music) - when you have to resort to that you are not trusting the play or your direction and the fact is it's so off-putting and distracting it has the opposite effect from what is desired.

Darn.  That's too bad.

I have been to a great many plays lately, where the director has scored almost the entire play.

It is often very distracting.  You find yourself listening to the music, and trying to figure out where the music is from.

I was able to sign up for a free month of CBS All Access so that I can watch Star Trek Discovery for free.  I know I won't continue and pay for it when the free month is up.

I know.  It shouldn't be distracting.

Use the music between the scenes and acts, and let the actors handle the emotions during the play.

When I did INHERIT THE WIND, the director used music from JFK, but he used it sparingly, and it was very effective.

Well, I need to go to bed.  Tomorrow will be a day.  I have my family's weekly family dinner, but I'll have to leave by 5:15 or so because I'm ushering for a free military band concert downtown.  I think it's usually very well attended, so it should be good.
