Well, you've read the notes, the notes were subtly corrected, and now it is time for you to post until the subtly corrected cows come home.

As soon as I posted last night, I went to bed.  As soon as I turned out the lights, Annabelle and Thatch went crazy. running about, creating havoc.  Thatch played with his new ball toy from my neighbor Jaymie, and Annabelle climbed on to of the refrigerator and tossed things onto the floor: a bottles of vegetable oil and olive oil, coffee creamer, cat food.  I turned on the faucet and threw water at her until she stopped and climbed down.

Then I went back to bed and slept badly.  At 6:30 the cats started in again.  Now that they're fed, they're happy but Annabelle is restless to patrol the building.

I am sorry now that I did not get to see Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly! but I really thought that Bernadette Peters gave a wonderful performance, as did Victor Garber, both of whom completely surprised me.  Of the Dollys I've seen - Channing, Mary Martin, Ginger Rogers, and Streisand in the film - I would say she wasn't as good as Channing or Martin but she was much better than Rogers or Streisand. She looked great, she was very funny, and she seemed to be having a wonderful time playing a character actually in her age range.  I wish she would backphrase less in her songs.

Garber is a cerebral performer, lacking the gruffness and bluster of David Burns, Walter Matthau, and other Vandergelders I've seen. I think he's a good actor but I thought he was too soft for the role.  I was surprised how much I liked him.  I also liked Santino Fontana as Cornelius and Charley Stemp as Barnaby very much, but I was disappointed by Kate Baldwin. The orchestra sounded good, but I wish they had kept the original orchestrations.  The designs looked great and Jerry Zaks and Warren Carlyle kept the production fluid and constantly in motion.  This is also the first Zaks staging of a revival where I never felt the tempos were pushed to a frenzy.

I recall really trying to get the rights to create a musical of Ira Levin's "Critic's Choice."  (ity became a movie with Lucille Ball and Bob Hope.)  A short while later, Ira Levin's son Nicholas Levin was in the class Skip taught at BMI, and (at least to my ears) Nick is a most accomplished composer-lyricist, whose songs when he's at his best are often as entertaining as his father's work.

Post by: FJL on April 07, 2018, 05:27:48 AM
It seemed logical that if any of Ira Levin's plays were to get the musical treatment, Nick would get dibs on doing the score.

Nick keeps doing shows and acts here and there, like 95% of everybody, still waiting to have that breakthrough.

But I do find Critic's Choice, and Levin's play of No Time for Sergeants very funny.  (at least when I last read them in the last century)

I am pleased to announce the publication of YVONNE DE CARLO, the 18th play in THE HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS collection.

This one-woman play about Hollywood's "Queen of Technicolor" is set in 1974 when the lively, direct-speaking star of many action films, plus THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, television's THE MUNSTERS and Broadway's FOLLIES is faced with a life-changing decision.

YVONNE DE CARLO is available in both paperback and Kindle editions via Amazon.  Performance rights are available.

It’s disheartening to hear of people slapping a Bernard Herrmann score, or any such thing, really, onto a play in that manner.

What is Dolly's age range?  Is it that as long as Horace is a reasonable match, she can be anyone over 40?

More on what we try to forget and ignore about people we're writing with when we feel good about the project.  (Going through the old emails now for reasons I can't say online.)

An odd "Dead Aunt" tidbit:  (with all respect to the late aunt, who must have been a wonderful person, but in retrospect seems to have been used by this writer as an emotional weapon!)

April 7 2011:
I'm actually in Connecticut right now at a hospital with my aunt.  She has been bravely fighting cancer for a few years now, and took a turn for the worse yesterday, and I was asked to come to the hospital today.  She is le a second mother to me.  She doesn't have much longer, but as with these kinds of horrible illnesses, no one really knows wheher that means a couple days or a couple weeks.  So I can" t really be more responsive now, but yes.... (etc.)

Us on April 7 2011:
Sending our love to you and strength to you and your family.   If you need any errands run in the city while you're gone, just let us know.  Love, Skip and Fred

April 13, 2011, she was off on a vacation to Florida until April 23.

In retrospect, I feel we were played, with the late aunt having been trotted out when she could be used to great nasty effect.  You can't fight a dead aunt without her blowing up in your face.

From DR George:
Quote
I have a co-worker that for just about EVERY e-book that she buys, she (when she's able) strips the DRM from the e-book (both epub and Kindle) so that she can reformat them the way that SHE wants them.  Evidently, Kindle e-books can have either too much or too little space in between paragraphs, or some are formatted where she can't make changes through her device, things like that.  I know she reads a lot of e-books, but to automatically do that for practically every one is (to me) kind of ridiculous.  Just read the darned book, is what I say...but not to her, of course. ;)

This is funny, and in my opinion a ridiculous waste of time. ;D

Just curious, when you had your pre-adoption home check, did the inspector warn you that kittens would likely knock all these things down?

Back from a light breakfast and reading the first draft of the Doug Haverty script for the musical we're writing.  Some good things, but we are not on the same page in terms of the show we're writing, so I think we'll meet tomorrow and go over everything.  I think his idea is fantastic and I think he's not realizing the fun or the potential of it and the way he's shoehorning in the songs isn't organic - so I've completely rearranged all the opening scenes that occur within the big opening number, and then we have to get on the same page after that.

This is the dumbest sounding thing that I have ever heard. Most kindle e-books are formatted perfectly fine. Plus you can adjust them on your own kindle (make the print larger or smaller, add fewer spacings between lines). I don't even think that it is legal to do this.

DR FJL, yes you were played.

By a very talented and capable person, though.  I can't imagine if what we thought and expected she'd bring to the project weren't worth trying to put this type of stuff out of our minds, it would need looking at emails to see what went on.  (At least based on the back emails I've happened across so far, it seems the main problem that her reaction was these communication breaks, and lack of consideration for what anyone else was putting in to the writing.  Mainly a feeling like from a sitcom:  "If you don't know why I'm upset, I'm not gonna tell you."  But it feels like the truth is we wanted what she was doing, but all the other 3 pretty much sat and waited through the absences, never knowing when the absences would be over.

I think in what I read yesterday, there was actually an exchange that felt like: I'm so mad that you're upset about my unannounced unexplained cooling-off break, that I just have to take another cooling-off break.    :)

BK - "GEE" is in the house!  The reason, i guess, was that the people in the package room have been overworked so passing out the delivery slips got delayed, and their main boss did not OK overtime.   I'm pretty sure Skip hasn't started "War and Peace" while waiting for it.  :)

I also loved the added bonus sheet (and the beautifully scribbled comments on it), and the title page note/signature.

The resident knocker-offer here almost exclusively goes into that mode when meal time comes around.  It’s clearly an acting out thing which he’d learned before we adopted him.

And except for one incident I can recall from his earliest weeks with us, this behavior is ONLY summoned up when we’re home to react.  We have never come back from an extended absence, however long past a meal time it is, to find things amiss.

Former DR Jose and I saw Brian Bedford as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest.  I went in hating the idea of the role being a drag role, but Bedford sold me completely as a formidable battle axe.

The Vixter and I saw that production as well (very possibly on your recommendation) we loved it

I have an Edith Wharton novella to keep me occupied. Something called Bunner Sisters.

I haven't read anything by her yet.  Is it good?

She’s one of my favorites and this one was very good, albeit different. Definitely not a tale of society.

They were giveaways of the demo CD that you have.  The only new tracks are the opening number (Caesar Samayoa singing "Today Is My Day") and a new track for "It's Just I Haven't Met the Man Yet" adding the new back-up by the Soldiers Trio done for the TRU Jan. 15 reading.  I'll e-mail those tracks to you now.  Thanks!

Was the talk about the "making Viva Max" documentary interesting?  or is that after the movie?

It was very good, and it was before the movie. I don’t know what the documentary will be like. It’s become a personal story of the director, rather than being strictly about Viva Max. He had some anecdotes that were interesting. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas tried to take the movie makers to court to prevent them from filming. According to an audiotape of the proceedings, they compared the film to the Vietcong. In short, they were real-life versions of the Alice Ghostley character.

It was still mostly frozen by the time my dad decided that he wanted a piece.

I sliced the rest of the pie and the rest of us waited until it was defrosted to eat it.

I had to leave my parents' house a little after 5:00 and go downtown since I was ushering for a combined US/Canadian military band concert.

Congrats, Druxy!

Just read the darned book, is what I say...but not to her, of course. ;)

This is funny, and in my opinion a ridiculous waste of time. ;D

Mine, too!

This is the dumbest sounding thing that I have ever heard. Most kindle e-books are formatted perfectly fine. Plus you can adjust them on your own kindle (make the print larger or smaller, add fewer spacings between lines). I don't even think that it is legal to do this.

I agree...but there are some e-books that even with the formatting changes that are available to be made within the Kindle app, it's not good enough for her and doesn't allow for enough customizing...to her standards. ::)

I like the idea of a safety check, just thought though he might have mentioned it-lol  Of course you would still have the kittens. :)

Why? I know and they know that cats climb.  The refrigerator is Annabelle's new Mt Everest.  I will keep spraying her with water until she realizes she should go climb a bookcase.

GO CLIMB A BOOKCASE - Sorkin's play adaptation of Harper Lee's "Go Set a Watchman" preserving none of the intent of the original
