I am sorry now that I did not get to see Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly! but I really thought that Bernadette Peters gave a wonderful performance, as did Victor Garber, both of whom completely surprised me. Of the Dollys I've seen - Channing, Mary Martin, Ginger Rogers, and Streisand in the film - I would say she wasn't as good as Channing or Martin but she was much better than Rogers or Streisand. She looked great, she was very funny, and she seemed to be having a wonderful time playing a character actually in her age range. I wish she would backphrase less in her songs.
Garber is a cerebral performer, lacking the gruffness and bluster of David Burns, Walter Matthau, and other Vandergelders I've seen. I think he's a good actor but I thought he was too soft for the role. I was surprised how much I liked him. I also liked Santino Fontana as Cornelius and Charley Stemp as Barnaby very much, but I was disappointed by Kate Baldwin. The orchestra sounded good, but I wish they had kept the original orchestrations. The designs looked great and Jerry Zaks and Warren Carlyle kept the production fluid and constantly in motion. This is also the first Zaks staging of a revival where I never felt the tempos were pushed to a frenzy.
And now I know I have to see HELLO, DOLLY! one of these days. Thank you for the review, DR Elmore.
Nothing you can do will help a Dead Aunt.
I have a co-worker that for just about EVERY e-book that she buys, she (when she's able) strips the DRM from the e-book (both epub and Kindle) so that she can reformat them the way that SHE wants them. Evidently, Kindle e-books can have either too much or too little space in between paragraphs, or some are formatted where she can't make changes through her device, things like that. I know she reads a lot of e-books, but to automatically do that for practically every one is (to me) kind of ridiculous. Just read the darned book, is what I say...but not to her, of course. ;)
As soon as I posted last night, I went to bed. As soon as I turned out the lights, Annabelle and Thatch went crazy. running about, creating havoc. Thatch played with his new ball toy from my neighbor Jaymie, and Annabelle climbed on to of the refrigerator and tossed things onto the floor: a bottles of vegetable oil and olive oil, coffee creamer, cat food. I turned on the faucet and threw water at her until she stopped and climbed down.
We've continued our catch-up movie viewing. Thursday evening we watched DARKEST HOUR and last night JUMANJI.

Those nocturnal kittens are such a joy ;) :D
Just curious, when you had your pre-adoption home check, did the inspector warn you that kittens would likely knock all these things down?

DR FJL, yes you were played.
I like the idea of a safety check, just thought though he might have mentioned it-lol Of course you would still have the kittens. :)

Why? I know and they know that cats climb. The refrigerator is Annabelle's new Mt Everest. I will keep spraying her with water until she realizes she should go climb a bookcase.
JohnG, are you still going to Hemisfair tonight?
I have an Edith Wharton novella to keep me occupied. Something called Bunner Sisters.
DR FJL, yes you were played.
By a very talented and capable person, though. I can't imagine if what we thought and expected she'd bring to the project weren't worth trying to put this type of stuff out of our minds, it would need looking at emails to see what went on. (At least based on the back emails I've happened across so far, it seems the main problem that her reaction was these communication breaks, and lack of consideration for what anyone else was putting in to the writing. Mainly a feeling like from a sitcom: "If you don't know why I'm upset, I'm not gonna tell you." But it feels like the truth is we wanted what she was doing, but all the other 3 pretty much sat and waited through the absences, never knowing when the absences would be over.
I think in what I read yesterday, there was actually an exchange that felt like: I'm so mad that you're upset about my unannounced unexplained cooling-off break, that I just have to take another cooling-off break. :)

When possible I just moved things to a safer place or put them away. You have to have space to move things. She does seem to like high places and, in my experience, all the spraying in the world didn't stop them from jumping when I wasn't home ;D
Oh, and DR elmore you seem to be surprised that Annabelle loves to knock things over ;)

I would know that she's been on top of the refrigerator when I'm not home by the objects on the floor in front of it when I returned. So far, it only happens when I'm home.
Brian Bedford was in a movie called The Pad and How to Use It based on a one act play by Peter Shaffer called The Private Ear.
The play is very good - the movie kind of messed it up, but Brian Bedford was GREAT and he became one of my favorite actors after I saw it.....
Former DR Jose and I saw Brian Bedford as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest. I went in hating the idea of the role being a drag role, but Bedford sold me completely as a formidable battle axe.
Speaking of loving things, I have finished reading GEE

I haven't read anything by her yet. Is it good?
I read the whole thing while waiting for my car.
They mentioned the musical and handed out discs.

Vixmom, when did you find the time to read an entire book?
I tried to get out early for a walk today. By the time I finally left, within 5 minutes it began to rain. Half an hour later my pants were completely soaked. Fortunately I had thrown on my new rain/wind jacket. If only I had worn my rain pants.
It’s freezing. The wind is blowing. and there are only a handful of stalwarts here for the movie. But we’re here, Fred. I even held off on dessert to make it here. Did I say it was cold?
Insert semi-frozen face here.
Greetings from Nicky!(http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u271/actr2000/Nicky%206A_zpskzglmv4p.jpg) (http://s170.photobucket.com/user/actr2000/media/Nicky%206A_zpskzglmv4p.jpg.html)

Now see I would have turned back once the rain started

Oh goodness no, gotta keep walking. I only stopped because I was short on time today. Plus it wasn't cold, just my hands were a bit chilly due to the wind.
FJL are any extra discs available for sale to interested parties?

They were giveaways of the demo CD that you have. The only new tracks are the opening number (Caesar Samayoa singing "Today Is My Day") and a new track for "It's Just I Haven't Met the Man Yet" adding the new back-up by the Soldiers Trio done for the TRU Jan. 15 reading. I'll e-mail those tracks to you now. Thanks!

Thanks, JohnG! How few people are there?

Do you read Jo Nesbo? His latest is a retelling of the same.
Was the talk about the "making Viva Max" documentary interesting? or is that after the movie?

It was very good, and it was before the movie. I don’t know what the documentary will be like. It’s become a personal story of the director, rather than being strictly about Viva Max. He had some anecdotes that were interesting. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas tried to take the movie makers to court to prevent them from filming. According to an audiotape of the proceedings, they compared the film to the Vietcong. In short, they were real-life versions of the Alice Ghostley character.
It’s going to be back in the 70s tomorrow. Can’t wait.

This is the dumbest sounding thing that I have ever heard. Most kindle e-books are formatted perfectly fine. Plus you can adjust them on your own kindle (make the print larger or smaller, add fewer spacings between lines). I don't even think that it is legal to do this.

GO CLIMB A BOOKCASE - Sorkin's play adaptation of Harper Lee's "Go Set a Watchman" preserving none of the intent of the original
