Jane, I haven’t seen Shape of Water yet but Sally Hawkins gave a better performance in Maudie. Margot Robbie in I, Tonya and Siamese Ronan in Lady Bird were both better than McDormand, an actress I usually love.

As for Rockwell, I think Woody Harrelson in the same movie gave a better performance.

T.O.D.

This wasn't really a play, but a short story by Evan Hunter (THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE).  As I recall, the title was THE LAST SPIN.

Back when I was a junior in high school, my late friend, Gene Rice, discovered this short story about two teens from rival gangs who are chosen by their respective gangs to play a game of Russian roulette in order to avoid an all-out gang war.  The survivor's gang wins the territory.

The two kids start out as enemies, but as they pass the gun back and forth, they bond and, just before the final trigger is pulled, they decide to "screw the gangs".  Unfortunately the last chamber is not empty.

I adapted the short story into play form, a rather simple task, and Gene and I presented it in front of the Drama class.  It went over so well, and the teacher and school principal considered it such a good life lesson, that over the next few weeks, they brought different classes in to see our play.

We were a hit!

George, so you'd be on for seeing that combo preview-final dress.

I've never had a production I wrote that had a "Pay what you can" first showing. Always either a totally-free final dress, or regular price from first perf in the (admittedly not so vast) past. I have no idea if that make seats harder to get for that night, easier to get, or maybe means nothing for seat demand.

Title: Re: THE ONE ACT PLAY
Post by: FJL on April 16, 2018, 05:35:03 AM
So TCB and Jane, before I contact the theater - what are your thoughts as to whether you'll want seats that June 14th night.  (I'm hoping since neither Skip nor I will be asking for any unique seating the rest of the run (people who've mentioned going to the regular perfs have been able to buy easily online; all perfs AFTER the 14th are there, but the 14th is not), the 14th seating will be easy.

Every term, the Miami University theatre dept. performed a night of 3-5 one-act directed by the directing class students, and I was in several of them.  i was usually cast in the ones that were termed theatre of the absurd - Ionesco's Foursome and The Bald Soprano,  Albee's The Sandbox and The American Dream - but I remember being in one by John Galsworthy, and seeing performances of Giraudoux's The Apollo of Bellac, Synge's Riders to the Sea, Pinter's The Dwarfs, and Tennessee Williams' The Gnädiges Fraulein.

Our accompanist - neither one of them - were able to come to the read thru yesterday, so the director DIRECTED me to play the CD when a song came up.  The cast sang along....and were surprised at some of the original tempi - as well they should be.

ANYWAY - we ordered some extra books, so everyone should have one sooner or later....even the no-name orphans, some of whom decided they wanted DIFFERENT names than their middle names.

I do NOT LIKE working with children...one or two would be fine - but NINETEEN is way too many!  The director is finished with THE GLASS MENAGERIE after this week, so she should be back!!!  I hope.

I was also given "We'd Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover" to stage, which will be fun.  It will be the only number in the show without cartwheels and back flips.

TOD - In high school I was in a one-act titled "Overtones," in which 2 proper ladies are having tea while their inner thoughts are played out by their alter-egos behind them.  It was great fun.

In college, a group of friends always went to the Student Lab Theatre on Thursday afternoons to see one-acts and scenes from longer plays performed by theatre majors.  The one I remember most was "Muck," in which Christine Lahti had all kinds of - well, muck - thrown at her.  Not sure what the point was, but I wonder if she writes about it in her newly-released book:  True Stories from an Unreliable Witness.

Back from cleaning, listening to, and shelving some records. And throwing a bunch in the give 'em to the library pile.

The Rozsa film music album was perfect. I did well.

I also found to my complete and utter amazement that I had a mint copy of The Grass Harp. I had no memory of acquiring it, but I know I hadn't listened to it. I read that Harry Anderson died today.  He was only 65.  I always enjoyed him on Night Court.

I literally just read that about a minute ago. :(

On a more uplifting note, here is a video of Spencer cheering on the runners during the cold, windy Boston Marathon.  People are yelling, OMG he is so cute.

And on that note (F#), I'm leaving work.  I was able to get my butt outta bed this morning and get to work early, so now I get to leave early.  I'd actually go to rehearsal instead, but I need to go to my condo's annual HOA meeting, so I can't stay and I'm not going to tonight's rehearsal. ::) I told the director last week when I found out that today was the HOA meeting.  Oh, well.  I'll be at rehearsal tomorrow.

Be back later!

And the rest, as seen in your books, is history!

I wish that photo was in one of my books.  I've no idea where it might be.

DR Jennifer, have you read ARROWOOD by Laura McHugh?  If not I think you would like it.

Not only have I not read it, but I have never heard of it. Looking at the summary and ratings it doesn't really pique my interest.  I have so many mysteries already on my TBR list that I really want to read.  Did you really love it?

The Lear disc might be defective. So, I'm now listening to a volume of Unmasked: The Platinum Collection of Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Sorry, but these aren't the best recordings of these songs out there. And, not surprisingly, there's no Patti LuPone. But there is Madonna. And there's too much Michael Crawford.

No songs from The Beautiful  Game, The Woman in White, Stephen Ward, By Jeeves or The Likes of Us.

I know, there are too many to choose from.  I enjoyed the writing and was engrossed in the story.  I gave it just under 4 stars.  If it didn't pique your interest then pass on it.

I wish I remembered the name of the book I was adamant you read.  You had other friends tell you the same thing.  Without the name I can't ask if you ever read it ;D
