Well, you've read the notes, you are in the know, notes-wise, and now it is time for you to post until the sticky wicket cricket cows come home.

Ann, everyone is thinking good thoughts for you and sending you the strongest possible vibes and xylophones, so you have nothing to be nervous about.  You will be absolutely fine and we can't wait until you're back with us.

Here is a photo taken tonight at the DGA Theater.

DVD: A RSC production of OTHELLO with Willard White as Othello, Imogen Stubbs as Desdemona, and Ian McKellen as Iago.  Directed by Trevor Nunn. "Ian McKellen delivers the definitive Iago of his generation."

CD: Dick Haymes:  It Might As Well Be Spring.  I am also loving this WMKV on the internet out of Cincinnati.  What wonderful radio station!

From the Bookshelf & On the Nightstand:  The Play of Personality in the Restoration Theatre by Anthony Masters.

I'm sooooo full right now.  I didn't mean to eat quite as much as I did, but I just have no control in Mexican restaurants.  And today it's the Cheesecake Factory, another restaurant where I have no control.

I see we got us a bunch o' WUSSBURGERS tonight.  Too bad - I'm just sitting here like so much fish, way too full to go anywhere near the bedroom environment.

I feel that tomorrow I will achieve my new plateau of 9000 posts.

Went to a screening of a very enjoyable silent film tonight - THE TEMPTRESS. Great new original score by Michael Picton. I loved the directing credit: "Personally Directed by Fred Niblo."
The film will be shown on TCM on Jan. 24. Highly recommended.
More tomorrow.

DR Danise - Phones in bathrooms aren't really that practical.  People can tell you're talking to them in the bathroom due to that inevitable "bathroom echo".  ;)

However, a TV in the bathroom is not unheard of... And if the hotel/bathroom happens to be equipped with a whirlpool tub.... Ahh!

Anthony's Home Port (where I went for dinner on New Year's Eve) has TVs at the urinals! :o What if you want to change the channel??

In my CD player:  The Woman In White, the original (London) cast recording.

In my DVD player:  nothing...yet.

In my VCRs:  1) a tape to tape tonight's "Star Trek:  Enterprise" and Jay Mohr on Comedy Central, and 2) a tape to tape tonight's "Battlestar Galactica"

In my brand new MP3 watch:  the original London cast recording of Promises, Promises, ripped from the CD-R that I received due to the kind courtesy of JMK!!  Thanks!!  It arrived today!  I've only listened to a couple of tracks but so far it sounds great!  I was able to put together the .jpgs of the covers that you e-mailed me and it didn't turn out too bad.  Thanks a lot for those, too!

Good morning, all!  I'm about to go push books for B&N.   Yesterday, I turned in the partitur for "That Ain't Hay (It's the U.S.A.)" for this recording on Monday afternoon at the Hit Factory.   I think it will sound fine, but you never know till the band starts blowing.

Today's a mindless day, and that's fine after the mental exertions of Monday-Thursday.  I finished HOW I PAID FOR COLLEGE, which I enjoyed immensely, so it's back to the painful KITE RUNNER.

Today's Topic:

CD:  Always the PHI recording project CDs (BABES IN TOYLAND, HAVE A HEART, THE LADY OF THE SLIPPER)
       JEEPERS CREEPERS
PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION (orchestration by Stokowski which I've never heard, but I doubt it's as wonderful as Ravel's)

DVD:  Two Netflix movies, I forget which

VHS:  Nada

I saw Little Women last night. It's a pleasant show (damn it with faint praise whydoncha). Both Sutton Foster and Maureen McGovern are excellent. There is some nice music. McGovern gets a very good number in the second act where she sings her feelings about the death of daughter Beth. Sutton Foster has a big first act closing number called (IIRC) Astonishing. Unfortunately, it's not. Nothing in the show is astonishing. It's perfectly pleasant and well done. The costumes work well. There is good use of some rear projections for sets, unlike those used in Good Vibrations. The supporting cast is fine, it's just missing the spark that could turn it into a wonderful, emotional evening. It's a little long (almost 3 hours) and since it's opening on Sunday I doubt that it will be trimmed much. This is crass, but for $30 I didn't mind it. For $100 or $75 I think I would have been more upset. So, DR Debra/Vixmom, those are my thoughts. I think if you can get discount tickets (you will most likely be up in the mezzanine) your daughter will enjoy the show. It's not a great piece of musical theatre but it's a nice introduction if a child hasn't seen much theatre. The beauty and power of the book isn't always transferred to the stage but there are moments which are very nice. I think it may have a life if only for school groups. There were many, many students in the theatre, no doubt they are reading the book and came to see the show.

I was also sitting next to a stupid couple who should be banned from the theatre! She complained incessantly about the seats. Now granted the mezzanine of the Virginia Theatre does not have ample leg space, but give it a rest lady. You're in a public place. Do you really think everyone around you wants to hear you berate your husband repeatedly for getting such bad seats? Do you really think everyone around you wants to hear (as you sit with your mink) how these seats "are killing me". If you're so unhappy, LEAVE! And her husband TOOK OFF HIS SHOES during the show. If they had been loafers I don't think I would have minded, but they were intricately laced tennis shoes! He had to pull his legs up in the cramped space so he could put them on at intermission and walk down to the men's room. I was hoping that since her highness was so unhappy that they would leave at intermission but no such luck. She stayed during intermission and he came back from the mens room. Before the show the wife handed her husband a bag containing a piece of pastry (how apropos to yesterday's topic), a gooey chocolate thing, and the buffoon ate it while she told him he could save it and eat it later, then stuck her fingers in the pastry and took some. I had, in front of me, a bobble-head doll and if I could have removed his head I would have done so with pleasure. Being rather short (5' 3") I do sometimes have a problem with who sits in front of me in the theatre. I try to get an aisle seat when possible but with TDF E-Tix, you pays your money and you takes your chances. The man sitting in front of me was one of those movers who kept shifting and leaning over to talk to the wife (I think he was there because she wanted to come, not because he wanted to see a musical based on a book he probably never read). Just when I was able to see unobstructed, Bobble-Boy would take a new position. It made watching the show a little frustrating. Perhaps the couple next to me and the man in front affected my viewing of the show. Who knows?

The most pleasant part of the evening was running into former DR Jason! We were both in the far reaches of the mezzanine, thanks to TDF E-Tix. We had a very nice conversation. He had an audition on Monday and scored a callback for possible summer work. MTI still has Dear Jason in it's grip so he is quite busy. He also saw Good Vibrations and feels the way I do, that it's a show in trouble and if it's not fixed it will open and close very quickly.

I'm seeing Lone Star Love next week, a musical based on Merry Wives of Windsor and set in Texas. Jason saw it and enjoyed it so I'm looking forward to it. I won't be seeing Gary Sandy (from WKRP In Cincinnati) since his last performance was yesterday evening. Oh, well. It's a small, Off-Broadway theatre so I don't think I'll have the audience problems I had yesterday.

It's approaching 8:45am here. I must get to work.

I'm listening to BBC Radio 3 right now. I'll be back later with other music choices.

Oh, yes. I forgot to mention that. Fiddler officially re-opened last night with Fierstein and Andrea Martin as Golde. I would still like to see it. I know many people have expressed dismay at his casting, but I think it's fine. I admire his work, both as an actor and a playwright, and I would like to see what he does with the role.

The first act finale is a recreation of "The Nutcracker." In the show, my sister (Sister Leo) was supposed to dance the Sugar Plum Fairy, but she gets hurt early, so I come out to dance it for her. Unknown to me, the Reverend Mother had the same idea. Here's the moment when I find out I'm not the only fairy on the stage (in more ways than one!)

Thank you DR BEN for the great review, and also for the TDF info.  I checked with DH and he DOES have a union card!! (After decades of working as a consultant he has finally been hired by NYC) so I think he'll be eligible for TDF.   So we will wait and go on the cheap as it were! (and who knows, you may always be able to wander down to a unused orchestra seat during intermission.....) I have always loved the book and never was satisfied with any of the movie treatments I saw.

She's only been to three Broadway shows, but then at 11 I hadn't been to any!  She saw CATS when she was 7 (I think, it was just before it closed)  and Beauty  & The Beast at 8 and then this past August  Wicked   (she sings every song from that constantly...Christmas 2003, DR WFO gave her the CD, its hysterically funny hearing her singing up in her room ( I don't think she realizes we can hear her) she sing a song like Loathing and sing ALL the parts changing her voice slightly for the different chararcters and singing REALLY LOUD for the chorus parts!!

When she was 5 she loved POTO and used to sing some of the duets from that using the same method, deepening her voice for the male parts!

Three stars have come out - To Maariv

Only thing of note to report is that I've been listening to The Frogs OCR this morning (I ordered it direct from the PSClassics website two weeks ago on the pretext that I would get it ahead of the 1/25 release date--I only received it yesterday.)

It's not a very good recording, aurally speaking.  It sounds rather muted, overall.  And there is absolutely no separation in the performers.  Everyone is dead center--the chorus included.  Even most of the orchestra parts sound like they are performing in a very narrow space.

The performers, themselves, are low key.  They sound like they are doing a musical written by Chekov.  My favorite new song from this score, "Ariadne", which was such a beautiful and surprisingly warm moment in the show, now comes across like a funeral dirge.

A very disappointing recording.  I'll be playing my live ootlegbay much more that this disc.

TCB I’m sure both Seattle and Tacoma offer my Girl Scout cookie choices.  :D

I would like to know what the differences are.  In all my moves I have never noticed a different selection.  If you order cookies they should be the same, however, if you are walking away with cookies you purchase the selection would be ones the seller has chosen since they can’t be returned.

BK, which Brasil '66 album are you listening to?  I have a huge lot of very rare Sergio 45s on eBay now, starting price of .99.  Hint, hint, nudge, nudge.  They include several nonalbum tracks, including the one Brasil '65 45 that never made it to any album.  Bid now, bid often.  :)

Jacques Loussier taught a master class that you had to be invited to attend.  Luckily, I was invited.  We dissected various Bach inventions, then got to jam on them.  It was one of the most instructive moments of my college life.

George, glad it arrived.  Sorry I wasn't able to do the insert myself, but you would not have liked the way it came out on my bargain basement printer.  I feel bad, especially since you did such a nice job on 1776.

Good health vibes to Ann.

CD:  Nara Leao.  Right now she's singing "Berimbau," which Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 recorded two years later.
DVD:  Night Gallery.  Fun to see it after so many years.  Love the pilot movie.  Was amazed to see it was Norma Crane playing the German woman in the last section with Richard Kiley.

Well, I've never stayed at the Muse but I've walked by it many times on my treks across 46th Street. It's a beautiful looking lobby. It is very centrally located, across the street from Ginny's hotel and just a couple of blocks from the Milford Plaza where Danise will be staying (if she can make the trip). It's pricey but it looks like a great place to stay and you'll be in the middle of Times Square with action available 24 hours a day.

If you don't need color then I suggest a low-cost laser. While color printers are fun, since they are almost all ink cartridge based you can end up spending as much in ink cartridges as you did for the printer. A toner cartridge lasts longer and I think a laser is easier to maintain. We have two printers, one ink jet color printer for the creative Anthony and an old (in computer terms, I think I got it around 1997) laser printer for the practical Ben.

The "Crickets" started out as pure fiction -- the name a ruse by Buddy Holly, Jerry Allison, and Joe B. Mauldin to avoid the provisions of a 1956 contract that Holly had signed with Decca Records, that would have prevented the release of their then-new recording of "That'll Be The Day" on the Brunswick label. The name stuck, and for the next 15 months there were records by the Crickets and records by Buddy Holly -- which were virtually interchangeable -- and they were billed as Buddy Holly & The Crickets. By the end of 1958, however, the references to "Buddy Holly and the Crickets" were becoming valid in the worst possible way -- Holly's shifting and expanding musical interests, coupled with his move to New York and marriage to Maria Elena Santiago, and the differing relationships that the three had with their manager, Norman Petty, led to a split between Holly and his bandmates in the months immediately prior to Holly's death in a plane crash on February 3, 1959.
The result of their split was a separate existence for the Crickets. Jerry Allison became de facto leader of the group, and they were soon a quartet again, with Sonny Curtis on guitar and Earl Sinks as lead singer. In 1959, still managed and produced by Norman Petty, they recorded "Love's Made A Fool Of You" backed with "Someone, Someone", which failed to chart. Their next serious assault on the charts -- a version of Curtis's "I Fought The Law" cut for Coral Records -- vanished without a trace in 1959, and their rendition of "More Than I Can Say" also failed

to find an audience for them, though it did wonders for Bobby Vee and, by extension, for Curtis as its composer. They recorded a handful of singles for Coral Records, and later signed to Liberty Records with Jerry Naylor in the lead singer spot (sometimes switching off with Sonny Curtis), in addition to recording with Buddy Holly soundalike Bobby Vee.

The group recorded for Liberty for four years, from 1961 through 1965, even doing their versions of several Beatles songs, but apart from a pair of minor hits, "My Little Girl" and "Please Don't Ever Change", were unable to generate any enthusiasm. One of Naylor's successors, David Box, died in a plane crash during 1964. They did find some lingering success in England, and the group even managed to appear in two jukebox movies on either side of the Atlantic, Just For Fun (1963) in England (doing "My Little Girl" and "Teardrops Feel Like Rain") and The Girls On The Beach (1965 in America (doing "La Bamba"), but by the end of the 1960's, Mauldin had left music while Allison was singing lead; he and Curtis were also working as session musicians, and Curtis scored a huge success at

the dawn of the 1970's as the composer of the theme song for The Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Allison and Curtis were the core of the group in the early 1970's, mostly working as a touring act rather than a recording outfit, though new records did appear on various labels, including Mercury and MCA. In the wake of the revival of interest in Holly's music at the end of the 1970's, the Crickets reformed on a steady basis, with Joe B. Mauldin returning to the lineup after more than a decade out of music. In 1986, Curtis left the fold to re-establish himself as a solo performer, and was replaced by Gordon Payne on vocals. In 1988, they recorded the single "T-Shirt", produced by longtime fan Paul McCartney, which became a minor hit and led to the release of an LP of the same name from Epic Records -- their presence in record stores, however, is usually restricted to the Buddy Holly period and their early '60s history. ~ Bruce Eder

I made a surprisingly quick run into Whole Foods to pick up some stuff.  It was surprisingly quick since the place was packed!  Pre-snow stocking up/panic.  But they had all the registers going, and the ladies manning the Express Lanes were making sure they were in Express mode.

Oh, and I also bought some lottery tickets.  Keep your fingers and toes crossed for me!  *And if I win, then all DRs will be coming to NYC for Jewish Thighs!  My treat!!!

Of course, now that I've said, I probably will win.

DRBen, I'm sorry that you were in the audience from hell.  When I saw the original production of MY ONE AND ONLY, I sat in front of a drunken birthday party group who wouldn't shut up during the entire opening scene.  My reward for asking them to calm down was to half this drunken oaf lean over my shoulder about every 30 minutes to ask "Are we being quiet enough for you?"  I've been among outlandishly rude audiences for RENT, THE MUSICAL COMEDY MURDERS OF 1940, and the original production of NINE.  There should be an imbecile  meter for each seat and when an audience member reaches it, they should be killed for terminal rudeness.

As to LITTLE WOMEN, Beth's death is the funniest part of the book.  There was a fascinating article about two weeks ago in NEW YORK magazine on how the original writers and director were screwed out of this show.  It's hard to wish any show directed by the current director of this production well since she's such a "Cora," one of the most unpleasant people I've ever met.

The general consensus at B&N today is, yes, the Trump wedding dress is ugly and overwrought.  I'm going to finish the posts and get back to work!

It just occurred to me that there is a Six Degrees of BK connection between BK and Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66.   ;D

Karen Philipp, who replaced Janis Hansen in the group starting with Fool on the Hill, played Nurse Dish on 2 episodes of the first season of M*A*S*H.  Though she had signed a contract for the entire run of the series, she was written out after the second appearance, though she continued to appear in the credits for the entire run of the series.  She later married producer Pat Proft.  Here's a photo of the absolutely gorgeous Karen (if you want a shot of her as Mother Goddess, get the first Brasil '77 album, Pais Tropical).  (She's the one on the left  :D ).

DR Panni - And if the practical side is looking for an option, I still highly recommend The Skyline over on 10th and 50th.  Yes, it's a few blocks away from Times Square, but that can be a good thing at times.  *It also puts you closer to some of the wonderful bakeries and restaurants over on 9th Ave.  The rooms are big, and the rates can't be beat.  Be sure to ask for a "Deluxe" or "Superior" room - they're only about $10-20 more per night.  Most of those rooms are in the remodeled and refurbished West Tower - which also has an indoor pool on the roof!  -And nice views of the Empire State Building too.  *I've also found that I get a better calling their reservations desk - which closes at 5:00pm - rather than booking through their website.  You'd probably also qualify for a corporate rate since you'll be in town for business.  *And, lately, it seems that all you need to get a corporate rate a hotel is just to give the name of a company when you make the reservation - they don't check at check-in.

Speaking of snow...

Richmond got about three inches last night...  And it's still snowing lightly right now apparently.  And then tomorrow, they will be hit again with the same storm(s) that will be hitting the DC Metro area.

I just hope the theatre makes a decision about the evening show faster than the last time we dealt with this sort of situation.  It started snowing right before the matinee started.  We finished the matinee, then drove around trying to find a place to have dinner.  Places were closing up due to the snow.  Well, we found a place, I think it was La Lomita, Mexican.  As soon as we were back within spitting distance of the theatre parking lots, the production manager called... "We're cancelling tonight.  Go home."

Of course, by that time, there was at least five inches of snow on the ground, and the drive home was quite the adventure.

We shall see...

I do like snow.  However, I don't like being on the road in it.

BK, I was just funnin' ya, after my post a couple of weeks ago to La Jolie Femme on the same subject.

Here's a little more Brasil '66 trivia for you:  The Look of Love features a very rare lead vocal performance by Janis Hansen.  As you may or may not know (or indeed care), Sergio used that newfangled multi-tracking stuff to double Lani on all of the first A&M album (there was no second female vocalist, despite a picture of Bibi Vogel on the front cover and Janis Hansen on the back) and a lot of Equinox (Janis did do some supplementary singing on Equinox).  It was only on Look Around that Sergio really began to exploit using both singers equally.  It wasn't until Ye-Me-Le, however, that he tracked them separately (usually splitting them into different channels in the stereo mixes).  There, that ends my Sergio Mendes rant of the day.  Or at least moment.

She was on the Ellen Degeneres show and she was talking about how many accidents she'd been in (driving).  She said she was a terrible driver.  But she was laughing about it.  She said she'd never hit another car (which i suppose is good). But she hit a person, and i suppose other things on the road like poles.  Well Ellen had her get in a mini car and back up.  And she hit everything in sight!

She said that she only passed her driving test cause her instructor thought she was cute!

Now, if you were her, wouldn't you take more lessons or something.  I hope I would.

...I think...

Oh, almost forgot...  Media Check...

DVD and VCR - Still nothing, but... with a snow day possibly coming up...

As for CDs - I'm still dealing with last week's rotation, but I bring back a few CDs with me from Richmond this past week:

Sally Mayes - "Our Private World"  ...Sings Comden & Green.
Five After Eight (OCR)
Promises, Promises, (OCR)
Yo-Yo Ma - "Soul of the Tango", The Music of Astor Piazzolla
Emmanuel Ax & Pablo Ziegler - "Los Tangueros", The Tangos of Astor Piazzolla  - Guess I'm on a Piazzolla/Tango kick right now.

Thank you!

Hmmm... It was released back in 1997!  I'm surprised I never saw it come through the music store, unless it was part of Warner Bros. specialty line, but still... Guess I know what I'll be purchasing when I head back to my "old" music store...

Is "I'm Tone Deaf" a Flanders & Swann song?  I've played that a few times at auditions - tricky, tricky, tricky!

I will post the link to BBC 2 so you can listen to the show if you are so inclined. It's a half-hour segment and will be on the BBC Web site until next Friday at 2pm Eastern Standard Time. It's great to hear the recordings again. I have two records which have not yet been transferred to CD. They are high on the list.

Well, it was a really good day until the subject of homework came up. I'm taking a break from struggling through fifty pages of my Rhetorics textbook. If you want to know the truth, I don't even know what rhetoric is. Maybe by the end of the semester I'll have some idea.

In my CD player is my Michael Buble album. I walked into my room a couple days ago and found my DFBML (Dear Furry Brown Meowing Lump) lounging on my futon listening to Michael Buble singing. DC Tumbly (or Lloyd, as he likes to call himself) is in there now listening to himself snoring even though he's awake. I have truly talented pets.

Dear Friend BK, when I left the store, I was never notified of a single event although invitations used to be sent out via guests lists the author/publisher provided.  Whenever I'd stop back in the shop, I was told by the owners that I never came around enough, and I wanted to say "you could invite me to an event, ya know."

Jane - Did DRelmore tell you that he directed a community theater production of The Fantasticks lifetimes ago here in Middletown?  I played The Mute (you won't hear that character on the recording ;)) and I liked the song "They Were You" so much that Richard and I used it as part of the pre-ceremony music at our wedding.  The organist was playing it just as many of our community theater friends were taking their seats.

Thanks, DRs Jane and Ginny. Yes, I had a ball. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: the three best times I've had on stage were during the runs of AND THE WORLD GOES 'ROUND, FOREVER PLAID, and NUNCRACKERS.

They're all three revues, so you get to do lots of different things, and all three are real crowd-pleasers, so that does A LOT for the ego.

I got through QUEER EYE and AMERICAN IDOL - Round 2 auditions this afternoon.

I was quite put off that Simon let his ego get bruised enough by the good looking "cruise ship" singer to turn him down. He had enough talent to go through to the nextg round.

Of course, he didn't help his case by having such a superior attitude. I think it might be wiser to go in humble and come out cocky IF you make it.

DR Jane:  I was cast as Matt in a production of "The Fantasticks" in the fall of 1968.

Several years later, I didn't make the cut in auditions for a military production of the show in Vicenza, Italy, although I wasn't terribly upset by it as I had recently been Albert in a production of "Bye Bye Birdie."

I went to see the show and I was totally dumbfounded.  There wasn't a single "voice" in the show.  The directress had cast all non-singers, although they weren't tone deaf by any means.

Still....you'd think....and I know some lovely female voices were heard during auditions.

Speaking of non-voices.  Keith and I were watching a preview of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and I said we should see this at the big theater with the good sound system (our theaters in town don’t have the best sound).  Keith’s response was “it won’t improve his voice”.

For those looking to do an NYC trip relatively on the cheap, I'll again mention the Portland Square (http://www.portlandsquarehotel.com) on 47th St., between 6th and 7th.  A thoroughly no-frills place, but it's clean, great location, and inexpensive.  They currently list a single room with private bathroom in mid-March as $85 per night ($80 for stays of three nights or longer).  Tough to beat for 1/2 block off Times Square.

Atrocious and gauche you know to picket
Go home and starve like gentlemen

And money's never talked about

Not cricket to picket not cricket

For those who need to know, "The Crickets" released further material after "T Shirt". Wouldn't you know I am collector?  Many of their releases in the 1960's (for Liberty) were produced by Snuff Garrett - that makes them worth listening to IMHO.  I think they had the original versions of "More Than I Can Say" and "A Fool Never Learns". (Bobby Vee and Andy Williams covered the songs later).

It is of course Cricket season in Australia. Teams from Pakistan and the West Indies are touring here at the moment.

You need to know all that to get through your day.

It is called "Agenda This" and it shall be filled with proof that everything can be said to have a gay agenda, including those who complain about it.

Actually, the book is called "Candle Wax Smarts" and will be a titillating expose of some Berkeley wax-mongers who not only get off making candles but have tried to cripple the market with hedonistic designs.

My next book will be "Confessions of a Smart Ass".  It is NOT autobiographical, thank you.  But it probably should be.

I have also considered writing a cookbook, but cannot decide upon a theme title.

I'm toying with "Pernicious Parsnips" (but I fear that title may have already been bandied about).

"Irregular Arugula" strikes my fancy, but I don't want something referred to as "..that arugula book" because folks cannot pronounce "irregular" and "arugula" back-to-back.

Damn!  I need to take more care when I use that nose spray!

How is Callie?

Thanks for asking. She's ok, but pretty weak.  Still don't have test results, so I'm just going to hang out with them this weekend. (I have another cat named Nilla), sing them some of the silly songs I make up with their names in them and try to keep her spirits up until I know more.

I am considering going to Being Julia this weekend, anyone seen it?

cd player check:

Maureen McGovern (So glad to know she's doing a musical on Broadway!)

Lesley Garrett (Soon to appear in concerts with Oz sensation and a favourite of mine, Anthony Warlow! HE should have been THE film phantom, imho)

Caroline O'Connor, second (disappointing, imho, of course) cd, with 7 songs arranged by Dear Reader Elmore!

... and a demo recording by original cast member of le Passe Muraille/AMOUR creation, Isabelle Georges, of Maury Yeston's "December Songs, both in English and French.

C'est tout!
That's all!

I think it was Jed who said:

the Portland Square on 47th St., between 6th and 7th.  A thoroughly no-frills place, but it's clean, great location, and inexpensive.  They currently list a single room with private bathroom in mid-March as $85 per night ($80 for stays of three nights or longer).  Tough to beat for 1/2 block off Times Square.

And it's just a block away from Ginny's hotel and Panni's possible hotel. It's on the same block as the stage door of the Palace Theatre where All Shook Up, the next Jukebox musical to hit Broadway, will be playing. Aida just closed a while ago after playing there for many years (not as many as Disney would have liked but enough). Sweet Charity also played there in it's original incarnation and Judy Garland had many happy nights at the Palace.

The hotel is also a hop, skip and a jump away from the TKTS Booth (half-price tickets) and midway between the N and R trains at 47th Street and 7th Avenue and the B, D, F and V trains at 6th Avenue and 47th Street. The TKTS Booth is across the street from an Olive Garden in case you require sustenance during your stay in Times Square, and down the block from McDonald's. And who said New York doesn't have classy places to eat ;-)

It's also just a block and a half from a Virgin Mega Store in case you require CDs or DVDs (overpriced, I'll grant you, but convienent for the Midtown Shopper). HOJO's (Howard Johnson's) is on the corner of 46th Street and Broadway and just up the block from Beauty and the Beast and across the street from La Cage aux Folles.

This concludes your mini-tour of part of Midtown Manhattan. Please remember to tip your Tour Guide ;-)

This is one of my few NY trips where I might not stay at the Doubletree (which is sold out at the moment for the night I want to arrive) - I might be staying slightly out of the theater district (actually it's still in the theater district - near 54th St.).  Actually, it sounds very nice and I've seen images of it.  It's obviously much less dough than my last stay at the Doubletree, which was the single most outrageously overpriced hotel stay I've ever had.

I am now officially out of Diet Coke.  As soon as the Pool People are done, I'll run out for emergency supplies.  But if they're not done before six, then I have to wait for the Handy Man to come to check under the house to see how much damage was done to the floorboards in the bedroom.  One of them warped so badly that my dresser was tipping precariously forward and instead of being flat against the wall the top of it was a good seven inches away (while the bottom was against the wall).  I had to move the dresser off the warped floor board so it would sit straight, which leaves way too little room between the bed and the dresser, so it must be fixed and fixed soon.

Actually, MattH, as I was listening to "cruise ship singer", I said it before Simon said, "Stay on the ship." Reminded me of a dinner theatre pre-show singer.  Utterly undistinguished and indistinguishable.  Of course, that accounts for a lot of those that got a pass to Hollywood.

I was frankly a little bored...auditions became a little deja vu for me.  And I keep wondering how much humour I should find in people who are truly delusional about their talent.  They do not listen to themselves sing?  They honestly cannot tell how miserable they are?

And all the judges, even Paula, seem to revel in the mocking of them these days.  It's one thing to be brutually frank and honest as Simon can be; it's another just to parade people up there to be mocked.  And you know that has to happen in the vetting process.  These judges can't be seeing all twenty thousand people who show up...so the screeners are passing through a bunch of auditioners they know are crappy, just for the entertainment value of their inadequacies and failure.  It speaks volumes that they have increased this portion of the season.

I also don't see the point of a guest judge here.  With four, what happens if it's a tie?

I'm leaving work early (in about 15 minutes) to usher for the Peter Cincotti show tonight.  I have to be there very early and I said that I'd stay till the bitter end.  The best part is that the ushers get to eat the catered food!  (And yes, that's ALWAYS better than getting to see the show for free! ;))

Good question about the fourth judge, CP....I was wondering that myself.

I agree with you on humane grounds that a lot of unnecessary cruelty is perpetrated upon what seem to be "unsuspecting" souls.

But are they "that" stupid?  Are they for real?  The woman who ended the first show...the blond in the white pants...she's totally nuts!  They named her, said she was the worst before they showed her.  She was the selling point of the show, apparently.

I'm guessing they sign away their rights to sue for defamation/ridicule.  Probably get a nice little bit of moolah to become exposed nationally as idiots.

I have to admit, though, that I'm giggling hysterically when the judges start cracking up.  They get silly because they're exposed to some mind-numbingly bad "performing."  Simon is caustic under the best of conditions, but you are correct that Paula seems to have joined in the fun, too.

It is what it is.  I had enough on the first night and won't watch again if it conflicts with something better...like dead air.

Ron, I too wonder about how unsuspecting some of them are and am guilty as most at delighting in some of the nastiness...but it's what I don't like about myself and think that I just shouldn't contribute to the general Springerization of television by watching people make fools of themselves for my amusement.

But I am still amazed when you see someone truly crestfallen when they are honestly told they are wretched and they have no clue.  Don't these people listen to themselves? Can they truly not know?  But like you, i might be going off to read a book or something?  It may be one of those shows that has peaked.

I have and it's definitely worth a look.  Miss Bening is delicious in it, and if you have any interest in the theatre--and especially backstage shenanigans--there is much in it to enjoy.

For one moment...JUST a moment, mind you...I thought I had missed an "announcement" about a blessed event.

Then I remembered about Bogie.....

:D

If only either of my boys were close to such an announcement.  ;D  For now I'm very happy with the gift I received today.

She's on prednisone and lactulose for problems related to her abnormally small pelvic opening - won't go into more details about that!

No details needed-Bogie is on lactulose twice a day due to the side effects of his kidney problems.

We discovered, the hard way, prednisone gets converted into prednisolone so it is safer to give a cat prednisolone.

I'm glad Bogie is doing better.

Today in my History class, I was trying to figure out what is so great about my teacher that would make her groupies take all her classes. I couldn't find any particular reason. She doesn't wear crazy socks (like my Poetry teacher), she doesn't say "hee-uh." So what is it?

The hat sitting on Chooster's comb is very funny, especially after the smooth head of Cal.

Reminds me we had close to 30 Wood Ducks out back this morning.  Sorry it was too early to get a good photo.

I love all the picture of your show, DR Matt!  I wish I could see it.

The Muse isn’t that much more expensive then the Milford.  Look it up on Expedia.com for more info.  I love the idea of a feather bed and get a look at the picture of the tub/shower!  Woo Hoo!

Home again, home again, jiggety-jig!

Finally got home -- stopped by the cleaners (dropped off some clothes), the video store (bought three -- count 'em 3) DVDs, including "What A Way to Go!" for $8, and Honey Baked Ham where I procured a smoked turkey breast and a side of stuffing.

Miss Vickie has been fed and petted and cuddled and she's sitting impatiently in front of the fireplace waiting for me to fire up a log.

I, on the other hand, will be dillying and dallying over my own dinner for a little while.  I'm grilling a steak and having garlic mashed potatoes as a side.

There's a little succotash for green/yellow veggie combo.

Is tonight the night for all new Stargates and Battlestar Galactica on Sci-Fi?  I can't recall.

Oh, well.

Well out here in Suffolk County on Long Island we sell from 1/7
until mid March, but I think different areas sell at different times.
This is the Vixter's  7th years as a Girl Scout , but my first as leader.  We have ten 6th graders (we started with 20 kindergartners, but we have "move aways" and "drop outs" over the years.)  Its nice to see how well the remaining girls work together.  They are Juniors now and bridge up to Cadets at the end of the year... I am trying to keep them interested so they stay with the program.  We do a lot of community service, which is nice because it gets the girls a little less self-involved. My troop has a bunch of really outgoing creative, talented girls, so they are planning variety show, where the entry fee will be non perishable food items for the local food pantry,  and they are writing a play (to perform with puppets they made) for a group of kindergarten aged Girl Scouts

I took over the troop a little reluctantly, but I really am having a lot of fun with the girls

I think there may be different cookies offered in some areas of the country, because they are all baked by local bakeries

I went on ebay to see if any one was auctioning cookies (and they were!) and there were some varieties there I had never heard of .

The phone rang early today.  Illness struck the daycare center the grandlads attend, so der B and I had to dash off and ladsit once again.

As a result, our listening and viewing today consisted of:

DVD: Looney Toons.

Car CD player:  Liz Calloway, The Beat Goes On.  The older grandlad protested shortly after we picked him up, saying the music was "boring" and that he wanted us to play the soundtrack to Tarzan (the only disc he wants played).  After the third protest/whine, I shot back that it was MY turn to pick the music, and he could wait patiently.

He waited patiently.  We next played Tarzan.  (A trip to the grocery store was involved; hence the additional driving time.)

A Starbucks CD of opera arias, called La Grande Passione.  This was played on our way home, a detox from all the cartoon music.

Handy Man has come and gone.  He'll be back next week.  Fixing this floor problem will be a major ordeal, as he has to remove the dresser and the bed to do it.  He's promised me he'll come as early as possible and stay as late as possible to get it all done in one day - otherwise it will be the book room for me in terms of sleeping, and I REALLY don't want to do that.

Good Evening!

What a wonderful number of posts to come hot to after the show!

Tonight's show was a little strange.  It was a good show, but strange.  It was quite the giggly pit.  And it was also cold in the "pit" - which is not in the pit for this show, but on stage.

I think the whole "snow day" mentality was making everyone giddy.

Oh... And I actually managed to fall asleep tonight... While I was playing!  I suddendly heard a wrong note, and realized that I had nodded off for a sec while playing a melody line during one of the underscored scenes.  Hmmm...

Oh... I've actually "survived" a second - and most definitely last - day of fasting.  It wasn't a total fast, I had water and juice.  But still, I think my whole caloric intake for today and yesterday was still under 600 calories.  And I didn't really start craving "solid food" again until a few hours ago.  It's actually kind of neat.  And kind of scary.  I can actually see how someone could purposely starve themselves - it really is a case of mind of matter.

But tomorrow morning, I shall be break my fast with breakfast - most likely Irish Oatmeal and some fruit.  Oh, and I also plan to push play on the DVD player and start the first exercise routine on the new set of workout DVDs that finally arrived in the mail this past week.  One must be buff and svelte when making one's off-Broadway debut in a eight weeks!

-I figured the fast would help me start with a clean slate as it were.  So...  Before and after pictures to follow...

Maybe.

I just talked to DR Ann.  She asked me to thank one and all, all and one, for your thoughts and vibes and such.  All went just fine, and she's now lying in bed, feeling pretty lousy, and wishing the drugs were stronger.  When the doctors told her that the first 24 hours post-op are supposed to be the worst pain of the whole thing, they apparently weren't joking around.  She'll rejoin us here in a couple days, when she can do anything resembling reaching/stretching/moving-of-any-kind more easily.  If all else fails, she'll just ask her father to whack her upside the head with a frying pan to help her sleep it off. :D

Just returned from the movie theater where I watched BEYOND THE SEA.

Here is my opinion.

The good: The musical numbers, some of which were just like out of a Gene Kelly film! Kevin Spacey is a wonderful singer, and not a bad dancer. The costumes were great as were the sets...they did a fabulous job of capturing the various decades.

The bad: The constant foul language, which seemed most unnecessary. John Goodman (who just seemed out of place in this film).

All and all I was entertained, but probably would not watch the whole movie again...however, I would consider getting the DVD someday just to watch the musical numbers.

Hated the musical numbers, hated every minute of the film, and would never ever watch one frame of it again.  And that's what makes ye olde horse racing.

cillaliz:  Tongue was firmly in cheek.  That is my sense of humor.

The Jacuzzi is taking forever to heat up - I'm hoping to be out there in a half-hour but it's not looking good.  The temperature of the water is only seventy-seven so far and I've had the heater going for a good half-hour.  I'm hoping it will move along at a faster clip now.

Well, Dear Reader Cillaliz, I did think you were being tongue-in-cheek too, cheeky you! ;)

LONDON (AP) - Mary Poppins and The Producers led the nominations Thursday for this year's Laurence Olivier Awards, honouring achievement in London theatre, opera, and dance during 2004.

Mary Poppins had nine nominations including best new musical, best actress in a musical for the show's star Laura Michelle Kelly and best actor in a musical for Gavin Lee, who plays Bert the chimneysweep in Sir Cameron Mackintosh's big-budget production.

The Mel Brooks comedy musical The Producers, which was a smash-hit on Broadway and won 12 Tony Awards, received eight nominations. Co-stars Lee Evans and Nathan Lane - who is no longer in the show - are up for best actor in a musical prize. Leigh Zimmerman, who plays Swedish secretary Ulla, is a nominee in the best actress category.

Mary Poppins and The Producers opened late last year in London and have proved huge hits with critics and audiences.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's latest West End production The Woman In White, which has been less well received, had five Olivier nominations. They include best new musical and best supporting performance in a musical for Michael Crawford, who also starred in the original production of Webber's Phantom of the Opera.

The nominees for best new play were The History Boys, which has been a hit for Britain's National Theatre; The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia?; Festen; and By The Bog Of Cats, starring Holly Hunter.

The best actor category includes a nomination for newcomer Ben Whishaw, who won rave reviews for his lead role performance in Hamlet at the Old Vic. He is up against veterans Michael Gambon for Endgame; Richard Griffiths for The History Boys; and Jonathan Pryce for The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia?

Best actress nominees include Victoria Hamilton for Suddenly Last Summer; Clare Higgins for Hecuba; Anna Maxwell Martin for His Dark Materials; and Caroline O'Connor for Bombshells.

Canadian Ben Heppner received a nod for the oustanding achievement in opera award for his performance in Peter Grimes. Others nominated in the category include John McFarlane for Peter Grimes and Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk; The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House under the musical direction of Antonio Pappano for their season's work; Thomas Ades and the Royal Opera House for the world premiere of The Tempest.

Dame Judi Dench received her 13th Olivier nomination for best performance in a supporting role for her performance as the Countess of Rossillion in All's Well That Ends Well.

The 29th Olivier Awards ceremony will be held Feb. 20.

Back from seeing HOTEL RWANDA. I now think Mr. Don Cheadle can give Mr Jamie Foxx a run for his money for the Oscar. An extremely disturbing film with some wonderful performances. I found it a bit over-written -- the kind of writing that just explains TOO much. (After a scene of unspeakable horror, one character comments to another "How can people be so cruel?"... Any audience member who isn't thinking that probably used to call Hitler "mein old buddy.")
Nevertheless, an important film, really worth seeing.

The problem is, anytime I hear "an important film, really worth seeing" I want to run for the hills.

Somehow, I knew you'd say that.  ::)
And the reason I "took" my daughter to see it is because this is the movie she wanted to see. I think you know DD well enough, dear bk, to know that if she didn't want to see the movie, we wouldn't have been seeing it.

I've only seen it once, about 10 years ago or so.  Unfortunately, eastern Washington isn't exactly the best place to try to find French musicals to rent, so I haven't found it since.  However, it is being shown at the university in just a couple weeks as part of the Classic Film Series, so I'll be able to see it in total then.

Do try and not take these things so seriously, dear reader Panni.  I would have made the same post no matter who had seen it and said what you said.  "Really important films" make me want to run for the hills.  I like a nice comedy.

Let me rephrase "an important film really worth seeing"...
It's a movie about a huge and shameful event in recent history, made very personal by focusing on the story of one man and his family. A million deaths is a statistic; the story of one family is a personal enough to involve us at a gut level.
Is that better? (Probably not.)

Actually, I would have more chance seeing it if someone merely said, "It's a really good movie, very powerful."  I don't go for hyperbole other than "I loved it" or "See it, it's faboo".  The minute I hear I MUST see it because it's IMPORTANT I run for the hills.  But then, I like the hills.  The hills are alive with the sound of music.
