Title: KRITZERLAND AT STERLING'S 88
Post by: bk on June 04, 2018, 12:36:17 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of Kritzerland at Sterling's 88, and now it is time for you to post until the 88 cows come home.

Today, I'm taking the day off from work so that I can go to my parents' house and help my mom do stuff (I have no idea what) as a birthday present for her (her birthday is June 16).  She's having some kind of foot surgery on Wednesday and wants to get some things done before then, so I took the day off.  However, I realized yesterday that I actually need to go into work for at least a couple of hours so that I can get the credit card bill paid (it's due on the 5th of each month).  I didn't have time to pay it on Friday, and I NEED to get it done before tomorrow morning.  My mom wants me to come over between 10 or 11 a.m., so I'll try to get to work by 9 or so.  That should give me enough time to get it all done.

As DR Elmore said, cold and rainy here this morning. And damn it, I'm giving myself the morning off. I'll get productive later, but I need this little break more than I can say.

The overnight temperature went down to 50, which is great for sleeping with a window cracked open, but my room was freezing by the time I was waking up this morning. Rest of the house needs some heat, too, so I've got the furnace on for a while. This is not unusual for this time of year. Normally, around Memorial Day is when I can quit running a few minutes of heat in the mornings, but there are always a few days in the first half of June that require it, too.

Had a long, intense dream just before waking up, that involved being with some of you HHW people, but aside from BK I can't positively identify anyone in it. It took place both east and west, like, out in front of my house (nothing at all like the real place) and I kept running in for my keys or something, and BK's new place which was completely unlike anything in reality. For some reason we were all about to drive from there in this huge fantastical car, to out east of L.A., like to Palm Springs or something, but we were going to watch this movie first. The movie seemed to have something to do with this outing, and we also discussed watching the first part of it at the house, then taking it with us and watching the rest while on the drive. Apparently this car thing had a luxurious film watching system in it.  Oy!

TCB and Jane - Bellevue looks more in a reasonable price range.

And it might be fun one day to be able to say to the owner of Talkin Broadway who emailed me "You need to check into Bellevue... you're crazy dude!  V.J."   that I took that advice after all!

(To anyone confused:   "Bellevue" has a very different meaning in New York than in the Pacific Northwest.  :)  )

Musing out loud here. Some of you have done this already, but here's my two cents:

I've been a hanger-on of my original phone landline, as it's always been the most reliable thing in times of outages and in quality of service. This time, however, it's the one service that still hasn't been restored since the May 15 storms. Power and cable took less than a week to be rebuilt, and this delay is a first for the phone lines. Just talked to them and they're still so swamped with the general outage problem that the soonest I'll see a technician again is Friday.

This got us to thinking. Normally, we'd resign ourselves to waiting since we do have our cell phones and reception is much more reliable here at the house than it used to be. But we also have internet voice service as part of the Xfinity package, the quality is excellent, and that voice line is going largely unused. In discussing the possibility of dropping the expense of the traditional landline, we all agreed that our one hangup (sorry, but we don't allow groaning here) was the prospect of losing the phone number itself. I've had it for 29 years, since moving here from L.A., Kristi and Nathan have now had it for a number of years, and "everyone" knows it, so it would seem sad and traumatic to drop it. But I've also checked with Xfinity, and the number is totally eligible for porting to their system. It just takes a few business days once we give them the okay on it. So it's very likely this will happen.

And spellcheck doesn't seem to care how Barbra Streisand spells her name, spellcheck says she's Barbara whether she likes it or not.  I had to go over the name three times before it stayed at Barbra (on another site).

Never a problem spelling her "Barbra" on this site, though.

That's insane.

As far as I know (which probably isn't very far), I have autocorrect turned off wherever it exists. I do see red underlining showing words it thinks are misspelled, but it doesn't actually change anything.

Lots of variables, though. It could be the browser, operating system, software, etc. Hard to know what's doing it. But really, I can't imagine dealing with these "corrections" so many of you are fighting all the time.

You can. I’ve been checking. On the iPad and iPhone (iOS 11):

Under Settings — General — Keyboard — there’s a bunch of things you can turn on or off. Check Spelling is one (I have it turned on), Auto-correction is another (I have it turned off).

Haven’t looked on the Mac yet, but I can’t believe it would offer anything less. Also haven’t checked the Windows laptop, but stuff like this ought to be customizable on anything.

Max Steiner's soundtrack was later recycled into Warner Bros. low-budget television productions of the 1950s, most notably Maverick (1957).

;D

Here's the imdb version:

While working on the script, writers William Faulkner and Leigh Brackett couldn't figure out from the novel who murdered a particular character. So they phoned Raymond Chandler, who angrily told them the answer was right there in the book. They shrugged and returned to their work. Chandler soon phoned to say that he looked at the book himself and couldn't figure out who killed the character, so he left it up to them to decide. In the original cut, shown to the armed services, this question is resolved; in the film as released, it isn't.

Well, I got a reply from my doctor about the insurance company refusing to pay for those X-rays.  In essence it says, Congratulations, You've just been fucked by HIP.  They're still claiming as well that I owe them $297 for a payment in March, and after 4 phone calls and a priority mail package with copies of the cancelled checks there's been no promised return phone calls, I think HIP Customer Service is telling me it's raining while they're pissing on my shoes.

I have more than a feeling someone at Second Story Repertory has found this site on google, since we talked about something here on HHW over the weekend and it got taken care of in very little time.  (And they of course know that BK produced the show's cast album.) It actually makes sense that they'd be getting google alerts when the name of their theatre comes up.  A couple of them seem extremely social media savvy.

So greetings, Starfighters!

Back from the presentation at the Group Rep.  Several actors there presented a rather long bunch of songs from Avenue Q - they would like to do the show.  They all invited their nearest and dearest, which isn't really the purpose of the Monday night presentations, so we had lots of whopping and hollering and screaming laughter.  Surprisingly, I've never seen the show.  What I saw and heard seemed awfully smart-assy to me, but I know it was a huge hit so obviously when it's done with all the scenes it must work better than just hearing songs.

I stopped at Gelson's on the way home, went to their seafood bar and got some low-calorie seafood things, which I am now eating whilst listening to the piano concertos of Darius Milhaud.

Well, today was quite the day.  I went in to work, expecting to have to rush through paying the credit card, but I actually called over to the business department to confirm that they needed it first thing tomorrow morning and was told that they don't actually need it until the NEXT day, so I have all day tomorrow to work on it!  Reprieve! ;D I instantly shut down my computer and hied myself over to my parents' house to help my mom do whatever yard work that she wanted me to do as her birthday present.

It turns out that my mom wanted to cut down some (actually, a LOT of) branches of overgrown trees and things.  We started with the electric chain saw and cut down some dead trees, and dead branches, and overgrown branches, and just a lot of plantstuffs.  We worked for a few hours on that and for most of the morning, the weather was pretty comfortable.  We got quite a bit done during that first part of the day.

Post by: George on June 04, 2018, 10:51:38 PM
It started sprinkling, although it never really started "raining," but since I was using an electric chain saw, I wasn't comfortable working with the potential of being electrocuted. ;) We took a break and decided to play Phase 10 and my dad joined us in the game.

By this point, the sprinkling had stopped (and never returned) and we were all kind of hungry, so my mom and I went to Costco to get some Costco dogs for all of us.  Mom and I walked around Costco (she also wanted to get some potting soil and taste all the samples that they had) and then we went to the deli.  She and I ate our dogs there, and brought back one for my dad.

We worked on the back yard some more.  As we (I) cut down branches and things, we tossed them over the fence on one side of their house so that they'd be in one big pile that could be taken to the dump's yard waste section.
Title: Re: KRITZERLAND AT STERLING'S 88
Post by: George on June 04, 2018, 11:02:12 PM
It's kind of hard to see (especially since I had to reduce the size of the picture twice), but all of the branches in front of the fence are what my mom and I cut down and piled up.
Title: Re: KRITZERLAND AT STERLING'S 88
Post by: George on June 04, 2018, 11:03:12 PM
Before this morning, there was NOTHING in front of the fence.
Title: Re: KRITZERLAND AT STERLING'S 88
Post by: George on June 04, 2018, 11:06:36 PM
We cut things up in the front yard as necessary, which completely filled their big blue yard waste container, which was in addition to everything in the picture.  A LOT of yard waste was removed and my mom is very happy at the results...and that I was willing to do all of that for her birthday present. :)

By this time, she was thinking of what to have/do for dinner, but I wasn't quite hungry yet because of the Costco hot dog, so I suggested another game of Phase 10.  She said that that was a good idea and that we'd all probably be hungry again after another game.  We played and mom won this time.

We were thinking about where we'd all like to go and she mentioned that the week before, she had gone with some friends to a fairly new Mexican place and had their lunch buffet and had really liked it.  It was too late for the lunch buffet, but we all decided to see what their dinner menu was like.

The place is called Puerto Vallarta Restaurant (http://puertovallartarestaurantes.com/lacey-restaurant/) and it was very good!  When we got there, they didn't just give us tortilla chips and salsa, we also got (and they regularly give for free!) some pico de gallo AND refried beans to dip your chips in!  I'd never seen that before.  I'd definitely go there again just for that!

Agreed!  I also have auto-correct turned off on every device I own.  I don't mind spellcheck because I can ignore the red underlines (or appreciate the correct spellings for words I don't know), but having a computer automatically change unique words that I deliberately spell the way I want to spell is just too much of an inconvenience. :P

At least, there is the option to "Add to dictionary."

Interesting.  I have a Samsung Tab S and was able to turn off auto-correct.  Of course, my tablet doesn't have spellcheck, so either they're linked or I missed something.

Oh, no! >:(

The Lacey Walmart.  If you take the Hawk's Prairie exit, turn left over the freeway, turn right like you're going to go to Walmart at the first light after going over the bridge, it's somewhere close to where you'd turn left again to go to Walmart.  I think it'd be very easy to find.

The Irish Rep Gala was quite wonderful.  John Cudia, an actor I know only by name, brought the house down with "She Wasn't You" and "On The Street where You Live."  John Cullum was adorable, telling stories of being in Camelot and On A Clear Day; he still sings quite well, but he's getting frail.

Sounds wonderful. Cullum is one of my all-time favorites.

Loved him in Northern Exposure and he was very good in 1776.

And from me, too!  I can't wait to see the show!
