Some of my favorite character-actor-packed films include The Apartment and Solid Gold Cadillac - each with a different set of twitty executives - as well as Ball of Fire. And then of course there's Grand Hotel. Speaking of which, have we acknowledged these two wonderful character actors:

Jean Hersholt
Michael Jeter

DR MBarnum did you watch TAR last night?

AMAZING RACE SPOILER TALK FROM LAST NIGHT!!!!!!

Well what to say about last night's show.  Very sad they were in Sri Lanka just weeks before the tsunami.

I was not upset with the team that was eliminated.  However they really didn't deserve to be eliminated.  I was actually sort of starting to appreciate their abilities.

The team that deserved to lose was devil boy and girlfriend.  I HATE that they were able to get back into it after missing that train.  The bunching up can be so unfair sometimes!

I was very impressed with kris and jon climbing those trees. Wow.  And they really showed them a bit more.

Another great show.  Can't wait to see who goes next week. Hopefully adam and rebecca.  They drive me CRAZY.

Not sure who i want to win. I like the other 3 teams.  Definitely like kris and jon.  But also really enjoy freddie and kendra (although she can be annoying).

My Ask bk question  is Why, oh, why do they no longer make movies that the whole family can enjoy?

Movies like  ":The Russians Are Coming" or  "Support Your Local Sheriff"  or  "Support Your Local Gunfighter"  Why do they have to always add "language" or unnecessary (to the storyline)  sex scenes??????

And (Part II)

Why, oh , why do current filmmakers feel the need to put some disgusting "sight gag" in kids' movies? Can't they make an amusing kids' movie without having some one vomit all over the car or have a bird leave droppings on someone's head?

Chooster is back, and all is right with the world!  Yay!

(BTW, DR Panni, DC -- dear canine, in HHW-speak -- Morgan often sits in the position in which your Abie was so perfectly captured.  We are always thrilled when she then decides to rest her chin on the ottoman -- footrest, not empire -- that sits in front of the couch on which her tush is precariously perched.  I love that dog!)

Two more character actors from yesterday:  Jack Carson, Simon Oakland.  (And I am embarassed that I did not come up with Maureen Stapleton.  I love Maureen Stapleton.)

Favorite Character Actor packed movie:  Pick any one of the 70s disaster pics.

No question for BK quite yet.

just for you  dear bk!

"whole cloth" (notes by Ellen Rosen)

(Phrase Origins)

The phrase "made out of whole cloth" (and variants) currently
means "utterly without foundation in fact, completely fictitious."
MWCD10 gives only this sense for "whole cloth" and dates it 1840.
The phrase did not always have this connotation, however.

The OED has citations for "whole cloth" from 1433 on.  Its first
definition is "a piece of cloth of the full size as manufactured,
as distinguished from a piece that may be cut off or out of it for
a garment, etc."  This sense is still used by people who sew or
quilt, who use "whole cloth" to mean "uncut fabric".

The OED also gives several citations for the phrase "cut (or
made) out of whole cloth".  The earliest citation is from 1579.
These citations indicate that for roughly 300 years, the phrase was
used to connote entirety, but not falsehood (an example from 1634:
"The valiant Souldier ... measureth out of the whole cloath his
Honour with his sword". This positive sense of "whole cloth"
persisted in England until at least the beginning of this century
(a citation from 1905: "That Eton captain is cut out of whole cloth;
no shoddy there".)

Before the Industrial Revolution, few people had ready access to
whole cloth.  Cotton had to be picked (or sheep sheared); the cotton
or wool had to be washed and picked over; the material had to be
spun into thread, and the thread woven into cloth.  Cloth was
therefore precious and frequently reused.  A worn-out man's shirt
would be cut down to make a child's shirt; the unworn parts of a
woman's skirt would be reused to make quilts; etc.  Also, homespun
fabric was not very comfortable to wear.  Even after the Industrial
Revolution, ready-made whole cloth was sufficiently expensive that
many people could not afford to use new cloth for everything.

Therefore, to have a piece of clothing made out of whole cloth
must have been very special, indeed:  something new, not something
hand-me-down; something that hadn't been patched together from
disparate, often unmatched pieces; maybe even something comfortable.
So describing something as being made from whole cloth would mean
that it had never existed as a garment before, and that it was
something special, something wondrous -- one's Sunday best, or
better.

The meaning of the phrase "made out of whole cloth" appears to
have begun to change in the United States in the first half of the
19th century.  The OED labels the falsehood sense "U.S. colloquial
or slang", and provides a citation from 1843:  "Isn't this entire
story ... made out of whole cloth?"  The change of meaning may have
arisen from deceptive trade practices.  Charles Earle Funk suggests
that 19th-century tailors advertising whole cloth may really have
been using patched cloth or cloth that was falsely stretched to
appear to be full-width.

Alternatively, the modern figurative meaning of "whole cloth"
may depend on a lie's having sprung whole _ex nihilo_, having no
connection with existing facts.  All-newness distinguishes garments
and lies made out of whole cloth.  This is a positive characteristic
for clothes, but not for the average tissue of lies and deception.

Chooster is back! All is right with the world!!

I now have two tickets to DR Penny's show on Saturday, March 19th at 8pm. We are in Row D. I think they are seats 5 and 6. Hoo and Ray!

I saw Lone Star Love yesterday. It's a lot of fun. You get to eat before the show, in the theatre. The cast ladles out potato salad and baked beans and corn bread and mini hot dogs and cookies and lemonade, both pink and regular. The show, as I've said, is based on Merry Wives of Windsor. It's set in post-Civil War Windsor, Texas. The Red Clay Ramblers wrote and perform the music and the cast gets to sing some nice numbers. The show follows the plot pretty much with Falstaff being a disgraced Confederate Soldier who slinks away to Windsor, Texas. He meets Mrs. Page and Mrs. Ford and tries to woo them both. It's a raucous evening with lots of slapstick and some very good performances by Jay O. Sanders as Falstaff and Drew McVity as Dr. Caius.

We were hoping to see After the Ball this evening but we are not sure if it will happen. Since it's closing this weekend it seems to be selling out and we don't know if we will get tickets for tonight. We will try for Saturday and Sunday afternoon if we don't get to see the show tonight.

No questions.

Later, Gaters.

I'll be seeing a local play today, Da Kink In My Hair, and will report on it afterward.

Here's a preview:

My great granny always said, 'If you want to know a black woman, you touch her hair.' She said that is where we carry everything - all our hopes, our dreams, our pain."
        - Novelette, in 'da Kink in my Hair

Set in a West Indian hair salon in Toronto, 'DA KINK IN MY HAIR gives voice to a group of women who tell us their unforgettable, moving and often hilarious stories. Mixing laughter and tears - and told in words, music and dance - the stories explore the hardship, struggles and joys of black women's lives.

DR MBarnum: I think I've posted about Godzilla films before… I know Godzilla series is one of Japanese legendary movies…..but, sorry, I’m not a big fan of it, though I think a son of Godzilla, Minilla, is cute.  You’re a real fan of Japanese films!  Now I know you have enough knowledge of Japanese films, better than me, because of a number of names of Japanese actors and actresses you’ve gave on your posts so far.  Well, I’d tell my favorite Japanese actor is…. Toshiro Mifune who is known as a favorite actor of Akira Kurosawa and others, as you know. I like all his films, especially Rashomon and The Bad Sleep Well. And Keiko Kishi is my favorite actress all the time. She’s so attractive. In Ten Black Women, her performance starkly sparkles among other beautiful and character actresses.  That film is not much serious for the suspense, but is rather seasoned with humor. What kind of Japanese movie do you like, besides Godzilla films?

Sorry about your nice friend.

WASHINGTON - Calling this weekend’s national election in Iraq “a grand moment in Iraqi” history, President Bush on Wednesday urged the populace to “defy these terrorists” waging an unrelenting campaign of violence by casting their ballots.

Despite the continuing violence, the president predicted that millions of Iraqis would “show bravery” by voting in Sunday’s national election, but he conceded that some potential voters would be intimidated by insurgents’ threats to target voters and polling stations.

Yes, I heard this on the radio this morning.  There was also a quote, which I cannot remember exactly, in which the President said that any loss of life (regarding a plethora of deaths, both here in a training exercise and in Baghdad) is regrettable.

It's way past time for this entity to find it UNACCEPTABLE.  Maybe then something will be right with the world.

I had a tremendously cathartic four-hour telephone conversation last night and then it was time to come to work, it was overcast, cold and raining and I'm sleepy and have a scratchy throat and then I heard "the president" dissociate himself emotionally from American lives and welfare and I've been grouchy ever since.

Since there is a perception of great popularity for this object, perhaps Panni could produce a calendar full of "chooster" photos...from when he was an egg, a hatchling and then photos of the operation that transgendered it from a chicken to a rooster or vice versa to create a "chooster."

My choice for last night's theatrical touch?  Original cast recording of Working, CD reissue supervised by our very own bk.  One of the ladies, who leads a lot of book discussion groups, said she was going to start using music herself.

Kids movies is an interesting topic.  Because yes, there used to be lots of movies that were not made for kids but which kids could go to and enjoy.  If you simply thumb through the Kritzer books (especially the two early ones) you will see mention after mention of movies I loved as a KID, none of which were "kids movies".  As for movies targeted to children, like The Court Jester - that was still just as enjoyable to adults, probably even more so because of the brilliant wordplay.  And it didn't PANDER.  Disney movies didn't PANDER.  There were no focus groups, every film didn't have to be an "event" and it was a different world.  Today, movies targeted to kids are always filled with fart jokes or vomit jokes and are made for what they presume are children with ADD, who can't sit still for two minutes without some loud distraction.

YES!!!!!  When I was growing up we used to go the drive in every single Saturday night (throw all the kids in the back of the station wagon in pj's with their blankets & pillows and off the the Johnny All Weather Drive In! (sadly now a parking lot for Home Depot)

There was always a cartoon and then the movie which  didn't have scenes or language that we kids shouldn't see , but was entertaining for the whole family.

There are two eight year olds walking outside of my house - both on cell phones.  All is NOT right with the world.

I have returned from my ladsitting duties, at last!

(There is a sudden quiet, with a few crickets chirping in the background.  Such is fame.)

I'll try to post more later, but first let's focus on one incident that occured during the duties.

I was downstairs with the lads; we were watching a DVD of Goofy cartoons, which were also goofy cartoons.  Der Brucer was upstairs, getting his daughter's computer hooked up to the Internet so that we could find out who the Oscar nominees are for this year.  Der B had a nice mug of hot tea with him.

He was coming down the stairs with said mug of hot tea when there was a sudden crash.  We all turned in time to see him sliding down the stairs, ending in a heap at their base.  Goofy was forgotten as we all dashed over to find out how badly hurt he was.

Fortunately, no bones were broken, and there was just one abrasion where his skin was rubbed raw; he's just suffered bruises, but that's quite enough.  The lads helped me clean up all the spilled tea, and we put der B's pants and shirt in the drier to dry out the tea he had spilled upon himself.

Der Brucer is fine now, if very sore.  He fortuitiously had a doctor's appointment later in the day, and the doctor checked him over, giving him a clean bill of health.

Still, it was quite a scare for us all.

I can see posting pictures of our shows, our home enivronment, our dinners, our favourite movie stars, art objects we're particularly proud of, even our favourite beefcake/cheesecake photos (to some extent), and, yes, even our latest acquisitions (even Choosters), ...but once we've seen one or two pictures of said acquisition from various angles, once we've gotten the idea, do we really need an unending series of poses of the same thing?

Well...not this lad...Nor do I need wasted pages of running commentary on it...nor giving it "vibes"...And my tongue isn't in my cheek...My time can be better spent here than reveling in the so-called joys of Chooster. It's not why I come here.  I come here for the wit, the repartee, discussions of the arts. When the site becomes overwhelmed with banalities like Chooster -- a remaindered Pier One knick-knack, that's when I make my exit.

Written by Portlander Mike Rich, who has sat in mine very own kitchen trying to convince mine very own wife to get up at 3:00 a.m. every morning to do the morning drive shift on the radio station Mike used to work for before he made millions working for Disney.  :)

It's interesting, because a guy who just contacted me about Frances was a finalist (like Mike--who actually won) for the Nicholl Fellowship.  He also used to work at Paramount and he has lots of interesting stories.

Thanks for the health vibes, DR Panni--in what Dear Spouse may be taking as a sign from heaven, my voice is completely gone.   ;D

After a very painful silence between early arrivals and myself (preparing for a presentation last week), I decided that, from then on, I'd have music playing in the room while setting up for a program and again as people are leaving.   One of the ladies, who leads a lot of book discussion groups, said she was going to start using music herself.

See, you innovate and everyone copies!! Congratulations you trendsetter you  :)

Today's "I Hate" List:

AOL (always at the top of my list, LOL--finally have my new newsreader configured)
CCLI (Christian Church Licensing Inc.--music licensors).  Just discovered today (after the church's scanner broke, that because their PDF files of music are password protected, we can't copy them directly into the bulletin.  So I'm having to scan them here at home and email JPEGS to the church secretary.  Oy.  I want to go to sleep).

Today's "I Love" List:

Todd Rundgren.  His new CD "Liars" is gorgeous.  Love, love, love Todd.

Todays Ask BK:  do you love, love, love Todd Rundgren, and, if so, what songs of his do you love, love, love (or even like, like, like)?

I shall leave it to others to make up some kind of silly story about where the phrase Whole Cloth comes from.  I research my etymologies very carefully.  That I occasionally misplace my research and have to work from memory is a completely different matter.

The phrase Whole Cloth (http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-who1.htm) is appropriate as an example.  As the link provided shows, it now means "something that is wholly fabricated or a complete lie."  How this meaning came from it's original reference, "to a complete piece of cloth as it is first made, as opposed to one which has been cut up to make garments," is simply another example of how a phrase can "bolt" from one meaning to another.

However, I for one cannot imagine our esteemed BK making up complete lies.  He is far too honorable a man; kind, decent and generous to a fault.

I suspect that his intention was instead to use the phrase "hole cloth," which of course refers to lace.  Not just any lace, no, but lace that comes from China, woven by a specialized breed of moths.  These moths, relatives to the moths from which we get silk, form communities with communal minds, and work together to weave their silk into fantastical patterns.  (Regular silk moths simply give us their threads, leaving the hard work of weaving the fabric to us, danged slackers that they are.)  The final product is highly prized, as the fabric they produce is not only gorgeous to look at, but "breathes" and is very comfortable when worn.

It is known to unravel, however, when exposed to warm water, so I hope our esteemed BK does not cover himself with such a garment when he steps into his Jacuzzi.  If he does, he will shortly find himself in an embarrassing predicament and have to dash the whole nine yards back into his comfortable abode!

That said CP, to some of us Chooster was funny and amusing and enjoyable...but to each his own.

Yes, skipping over things is the ticket sometimes.  Let me tell you how many American Idol posts I merely glance at - same with posts about most of the reality shows - those shows simply don't interest me and so I move on to things that do.  Variety is the spice of life, and so, for that matter, is the Hollywood Reporter.

Well, a certain spirited debate this morning has helped me come up with my "ask Bruce" question.  And I open the question up to all.  What is the most embarrassing, worst, or silliest knick-knack you have around your house that for reasons...either sentimental or family obligated or whatever...you don't get rid of...

Our worst has got to be this god-awful, hand-painted clown that The Lovely Wife got as a gift from a group called Clowns for Christ, when she helped them with their make-up and staging.  I think it now resides in a closet in her office, unless it got "accidentally" tipped over. I hope, I hope.

The silliest maybe my Denny Miller as the Gorton's fisherman bobblehead dolls he sent me.  But I love them and they are proudly displayed along with the Denny as the Gorton's fisherman as a bathtub ducky.  There is also a hand-puppet around, not displayed.  They are all signed by Denny.

The one The Lovely Wife hates the most would probably be a ceramic, silver-painted Coca Cola Santa that I got in a garage sale and put out on the front porch every Christmas.  She keeps claiming she is either going to properly paint the thing or knock it over.  Each year she whines, "Do we have to put it out?"  To which I  emphatically answer, "Yes!"

I have several silly knick-knacks in the home environment.  My favorite is my Buddah, which I won on eBay when eBay was in its infancy and I was buying anything and everything that people were selling.  It's sort of a clear orangy color, my Buddah is, and it sits on my piano like so much fish.  I love my silly Buddah and it is quite a presence in my living room.  One can feel its aura (the Buddah likes having its aura felt).

Speaking of Charles Bickford (and who wasn't) - my father, after leaving the restaurant business, became a CPA (my Uncle Saul was a CPA) - two of his clients were Charles Bickford and Arthur O'Connell, two great character actors.

I love all of Oscar Wilde.  The most affecting Wildean moment was seeing Peter Hall's production of AN IDEAL HUSBAND at the Haymarket back in the mid-nineties.  It was not only hilariously funny but also very moving and had me weeping in one part.  An added bonus was Martin Shaw (who played Henry Baskerville in my Hound of the Baskervilles) doing Lord Goring as a thinly veiled portrait of Wilde himself.

I too am a fan of the Michael Redgrave film of Importance from '52.  And enjoyted the recent one as well, but I thought a lot of the taking of one long scene on stage and cutting it up over several locations in the film sometimes disrupted the natural rhythms and builds it should have. They also cut my favourite lines:  "You've eaten all my bread and butter."  "And very good bread and butter it was too."

I saw an interestng and foiled production out here in LA several years back directed by that old iconoclast Charles Marowitz whose concept was that both Algy and Jack are gay and Cecily and Gwendolyn are merely beards.  But I heard from a friend in the show playing Chausible that the lead actors revolted against the concept and went to management and got their way.  So the production ended up neither fish nor fowl.  Algy and Jack are wearing green carnations, but there is really very little else to suggest they're gay.  While I don't think I agree with concept, I wish Marowitz, who is always interesting, had been allowed to fully commit to the concept...because I think it could have been one valid interpretation.

The Hurd Hatfield film of Dorian Gray is interesting.

I have wonderful two-DVD set that has old BBC TV plays of Importance (Alec McCowan & Joan Plowright); An Ideal Husband (Jeremy Brett, Keith Michell, Margaret Leighton, Susan Hampshire); Lady Windermere's Fan (Ken Cranham, Sara Kestleman, Robert Lang); and Dorian Gray (John Gielgud, Peter Firth, Jeremy Brett).  It also features a 60 minute doc on Wilde.

I've seen Ideal husband, Lady Windermere's Fan, and the Dorian Gray and all are excellent!

Just last week, I heard a lovely recitation of The Ballad of Reading Gaol by actor Simon West read on BBC4 radio.

I also like the Stephen Fry film about Wilde.  And there was an interesting play about the Wilde trial that made the rounds of regional theatres a few years back...Gross something or other.  Can't remember the full title.

My favourite Wilde quote is "We're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

What is the most embarrassing, worst, or silliest knick-knack you have around your house that for reasons...either sentimental or family obligated or whatever...you don't get rid of...

The Chicken Lamp, of course.  But alas, the Chicken Lamp is no more.

When Joe and I moved into our first house in 1981 and were cleaning out the garage we found it.  A large ceramic chicken with a lamp attached.  The chicken had a lid, like a cookie jar, and an old wooden base, which Joe promptly sanded and stained.

It was so... tacky, so... kitch, that we thought it was delightful.

But when Joe's best friend got married and held a co-ed bachelor/bachelorette party, we decided to give him the lamp.  It was in July, and I actually found a store that had Easter egg dye, so we could fill the chicken with colored, hard-boiled eggs.  As a symbol of fertility, you know.

A few weeks later, the friend and his wife noticed a strange smell in the house.  They had forgotten about the eggs.

Alas!  A couple of years ago his friend threw it out without even asking if we wanted it back.

If we still had it, we could set Chooster up on a date.

Ah yes, some of us ARE looking at the stars!  What a lovely quote.

Knick Knack talk reminds me of the Dick Van Dyke Show episode when Laura sends the Petrie family broach through the garbage disposal......"I hope it's not one of my good spoons."  The brooch is shaped liked the U.S. and of course the upshot of the episode is that her mother-in-law hates it as well....and can't wait to give her the earrings, shaped like Alaska and Hawaii!

One set is King Kong and the Empire State Building, another set are two martian women, and then there is set of dogs that are from the 30s and I think are cartoon characters, and of course my Gumby and Pokey salt and peppers and matching cookie jar...and last, but not least...my 1970s Yellow smiley face "Have a happy day" McCoy cookie jar which brightens my day whenever I look at it! At their height in the 1960s, I thought the Smothers Brothers were just about the best act in show business. Their combination of real musical talent combined with the sibling rivalry thing was just hilarious to me. I had all their albums and lived for their variety hour. Heck, I even liked their lame sitcom where Tommy was an angel trying to help Dick.

The comments about the Chooster were not meant to be mean-spirited.  Not that I can speak for anyone but myself.  But I also did not take any of the other healthy discourse about it as mean-spirited.

After all, if folks in number can comment upon how happy it makes them, why am I not supposed to post  how "I" feel about it????

Many photos were posted previously and I said nothing.  It ran its course, or so I thought.  But today, there was another photo.  And that was fine, too, but foks then began making comments about how the world is a better place now that Chooster is back (did the Chooster sign up?  Does it have a pasword?  Does it post?), and I simply could not refrain from shouting to the skies that the state of the world is in no way, shape or form affected by a wooden fowl.

Photos don't bother me.  An idle comment makes no difference, either.

But I cannot say nothing about some machine-made wooden object changing the status of the world, especially when there are far more important things that would make the world a better place.

[sigh]

My tackiest/kitschiest tchotchke would be the breakfast set/clown that i got with boxtops, probably.....(hmmmm....head scracthing going on.....I'm HOW old now???)...about 35 years ago or so.

It's made of plastic and has my name emblazoned across its lower portion.  The thing breaks apart to become:

a plate (his feet are painted on the bottom of the plate, and the plate stands inverted)
a cereal bowl (with slight indentations for his legs in very full clown pants)
a cup (his torso; you would hold onto his arms as you sip milk; it inverts onto the bowl)
an egg cup (his face, with the neck ruff being the base of the egg cup)
a salt shaker (blue pointy clown hat)

It's sort of hard to describe, but all those things pop together to form a very roly-poly clown.  I used to despise the thing, but as with most things Brooklyn-related from my childhood, I now have come to appreciate it, and it has traveled with me from home to home since.....1990 or so.  (I took it from my mother's apartment slighty before she moved to CA.)

It sounds like fun...boy I can remember circa 1973 when FREAKIES cereal came out and everytime I opened a new box I always ended up with the Freakies character Goody Goody...so I saved 75 cents and sent away for the whole set of 7 Freakies characters...it seemed like an eternity before they finally arrived...and I still have them!

Does anyone else remember this cereal?? It was all the rage at Griffin Creek Elementary school...well, my friend Beth and I liked it.

Believe it or not there is a video that came out a few years back that has ALL the various 1970s FREAKIES cereal commercials on it, and an interview with the lady who came up with the characters.

And of course I had to buy it! LOL!

Not getting the Chooster "vibe."  It's a piece of pottery chunk of wood (probably pressed).

My world wouldn't rattle if a quake knocked it off its perch.

Sorry, but...it's an object...not a living being.

All will be right in the world, or a part of it, when the President stops the loss of lives of American troops in Iraq.

Forgive me if I'm unable to be silly....

Well, DRRonPulliam, since I was on the bandwagon for the Chooster Theatre Festival, I have to cheerfully disagree with you!  One man's whimsy is another man's poison, but if you don't want to join in the fun, that's fine.  You don't have to rain on the parade either.

I have tried to avoid tacky knick-knacks, succeeding inasmuchas I've never bought one for myself.

Receiving them as presents, however....from loved ones, too!  Well....

Fortunately, they're pretty much in the Pier 1 variety, but totally not in keeping with my tastes...what use have I, I ask, for a wooden cat that is carved to be placed on the edge of a mantel when I don't have a mantel?

Or a world globe painted in the "old style" when maps still showed Greenland as Green and Iceland as White???

I have an assortment of Christmas-themed "cups/mugs" and no end to Christmas-themed oddities made from all sorts of crafty stuff that I feel guilty about seriously disliking...but there it is.  Not anyting vividly outrageous.

But...I do have my high-quality Winged Victory statue...and my bust of Alexander...and my Italian carnival masks....surely they're not....not....hideous trash????

Ron, you're not the only one who doesn't get the Chooster vibe.  It's hardly a rara avis if they're discounting them in bins at Pier One.  It's not an object d'art.  It's a knick-knack. A rather tacky one at that.

Oy!  And what's wrong with tacky?

Yes, I'm back from the opera, and my friend Bill was a wonderful Pelleas.  It's too bad Jonathan Miller's over-intellectualized production was such a dismal bore.  I couldn't wait for Melisande to die.

Good Afternoon!

Back home between shows!  Interesting matinee.  Half the audience was high school kids, and the other half was nursing home residents.  -Is that proper grammar?  should I have used "were" instead of "was".  In any case...  It was fun hearing how each half of the audience reacted or didn't react to certain jokes, situations and words in the show.  And for some reason, it was also just a particularly silly show backstage.  22 more shows to go... -Not that I'm counting or anything like that...

;)

Once home, I commenced with my workout - Going for the Burn!  And now I've been cooling down with HHW...

The Buddah knows that any more discussion of the Peckerhead is useless - everyone has made their point, everyone made their point as they so chose to make it (including me), and now it is time to have some fershluganah questions.  Or, more photographs of silly knick-knacks.  Can't someone post a photograph of a paddy whack?

The pontiff is in.  I see no site overwhelmed with Chooster banalities, just a lot of verbal axe grinding.

Comedy teams - Anyone remember Monteith and Rand?  If I'm remembering correctly, they started in DC, and then got some national exposure.  In the 80's... - I believe there were on "The Tonight Show" a few times too.  They were mainly improvisers, but I always got a good laugh out of them, and some of the very quick-thinking repartee was astonishing at times.

The Smothers Brothers always made me laugh too.  And although they were not a strict "team", I've always enjoyed Harvery Korman and Tim Conway - who actually have been touring as a team the past few years.

It's raining a "Singin' In the Rain" kind of rain today.  Alll day.  While it might be fun in sinag and dance in, it is not fun to do almost anything else in.  I try to let Sugar out between showers.  How DO you guys do this in the snow?

My question for anyone today (Jose, I know you're a keyboard player and not reeds or brass, but...) Does anyone around here know how to spell Ombishure (ambishure?) correctly?  I know what it means, but I don't know how to spell it and can't find it in the dictionary (EVEN UNDER THE WHACKIEST OF SPELLINGS).

I do have a set of "Funny Face" drink mix character mugs.  I'd like to get the Goofy Grape pitcher sometime just for fun.  I think one of my favorites is my Bob's Big Boy piggy bank.  I have an older one and a new one.  The older Big Boy is a lot fatter than the new Big Boy.  I see political correctness and body image have even struck Big Boy.

I'm afraid I have quite a few nifty tidbits like those.  I don't know which is the worst or the best though.

As for knick-knacks... Ah, where to begin...

There's really none that I don't like, or would like to get rid of... Or I would have gotten rid of them by now, so...

Steve and I would collect monkeys whenever we would go shopping or on trips.  Small plush ones, Christmas ornaments, cast metal, ceramic, plastic, etc.  We didn't buy any monkey in sight.  It had to be special to us at the time for whatever reason(s).  We never bought that many, but it was a nice-sized collection.

When I was on my one and only bus and truck tour - 42 cities in 63 days!?!?!?! - I tried to buy a refrigerator magnet in each city we stopped in.  Thus, my refrigerator in Richmond has a nice display of various magnets from various cities across the US.  *We hit all but FIVE of the 50 states in that time!

The ones I do love are the pysanky eggs my college piano teacher would give to her studio each Easter.  Should would make them throughout the year, then place a basket on the desk in the studio for each of us to select one from.  I think two of them are now "casualties", but the rest of them still look very nice.  And it was also very neat feeling them get lighter in weight each year as the insides started to dry out and disintegrate.  -But, one did break about a year after I got it - P!U!

elmore, I see no "evil and constant posts", I have stuck to my word and have not mentioned a certain "thingie" since I said I would not.

But if it is so popular and beloved, why not set up its own website, so everyone can indulge their fetish for it to their heart's content and not usurp Bruce's site with it?

Is there an agenda?  Of course!  If this site degenerates into such boring flatulent banalities, I'll be forced to fold up my tent and slip silently away across the sands.  "Oh, put it back, the way it was!  Oh, put it back the way it was!" (a Li'l Abner reference).

And I agree with Ron!  If the "pros" can to express their adoration of unmentionable, why are the "cons" somehow considered "mean-spirited" and "evil" for expressing their disdain?  'Twould be a shame if the outspokenness and bristling wit of this site got muzzled and we all had to agree about the niceness of everything and hold hands and sing kumbaya. How bland would that be?

Yes...I can say with total clarity that I got the joke.  I can state  that awakening to a world in which trains collide in Glendale, killing people, and learning of a helicopter crash that killed 31 Marines, plus an explosion in Baghdad killing other military, PLUS hearing the elected one "regret" the loss of life...AGAIN...just didn't lend itself to my finding anything remotely funny about Kimlets believing the world to be a better place because another photo got posted here of that rooster.

It's not the photo that set me off...it was the comments about it.  I couldn't care less about the photo.

I guess that makes me EVIL.  So be it.  I was SO mean to dare write a word about how I feel while everyone else was being so touchy feely about what THEY felt.

How dare I and Shame on me.  I'm a terrible monstrous person.  Off with my head.

I don't know.

I've have no experience at being berated for expressing my lack of feelings about a chunk of compressed wood.

What seems to be the case, though, is that "it" is more important than our rights to have an opinion about it...or to express those opinions moderately without someone's feelings being hurt.

I still maintain I've said nothing intentionally hurtful about "anyone" living and breathing.  I can't say the same about reactions to the opinions, though.

DR Charles Pogue mentioned that he would not be returning to American Idol's audition shows.  For some reason last night they hardly showed any really bad singers.  Instead they showed a bunch of pretty good ones who for some reason the judges didn't send to Hollywood.

The most interesting was probably a set of twins.  They said THEY MADE THEM sing together.  And I thought they were both good.  Anyhow Paul and Randy both wanted to take them to the next round.  But Simon and guest judge both were against them.  So no go.

Although on tonight's Las Vegas American Idol preview, one of the twins COMES BACK.  And since they are in a new city and there is a new guest judge I think he will make it. :)

DR Jane, please don't be upset.

LOL! yep. For the longest time my mom refused to buy that cereal for me because of the name...but she eventually gave in...it tasted like Capt. Crunch...but then along came Fruity Freakies (my fave) and Chocolate Freakies of some sort. Then they disappeared until sometime in the late 1980s when they showed back up on the store shelfs in a new, and rather twisted, variation that did not appeal to m.

And of the one you pick, what other films or television performances of hers have you seen and enjoyed or not enjoyed.

Lori Nelson married and divorced Johnny Mann of The Johnny Mann Singers.

Leigh Snowden married and widowed Dick Contino who played a mean accordion.

Julie Adams married and divorced Ray Danton.

And that's what I know about them.  My favorite is Lori Nelson!

And I loved Lori in TUMBLEWEED (with Audie Murphy and ALL I DESIRE (with Barbara Stanwyck).

Leigh Snowden was good, and I have liked her in several movies...favorite being I'VE LIVED BEFORE...which I would love to see come out on DVD.

Yes, the mystery spelling has been de-mystifyed, but did you know that the word was in a song?  And one recorded by The Manhattan Transfer??  Well, here it is:

15 MINUTE INTERMISSION (http://www.tmtfanclub.com/live1.html)
(Skylar)

spoken:  Hey what's the matter wit' you guys back there,
You sure look beat or somethin', you been knockin' yourselves out?

sung:  We want a 15 minute intermission boss
We want a 15 minute intermission boss
We want a 15 minute intermission boss
With your permission!

spoken:  You gotta be kiddin' man!

sung:  We want a 15 minute intermission boss
We want a 15 minute intermission boss
We want a 15 minute intermission boss
With your permission!

When makin' music gets to be a chore
An intermission is your only cure
To ease your palpitatin' embouchure
You'll never get to heaven if you treat us this way!

Want a 15 minute intermission boy,
15 minute intermission boy,
15 minute intermission boy--

Mmm -- Intermission!

As recorded by The Manhattan Transfer!

Evening all!

As the one who started the Chooster parade, I apologize for causing any discord among us.  It was meant in fun.  I simply picked up on what Panni said and (as you can imagine) all seems pretty right in MY world right now.

I had a friend who had a stuffed frog he called “Phineis”.  Not only did the frog have his own wardrobe, ranging from a Tux to Star Wars costumes, he also had his very own, real, honest to goodness credit card.

Phineis made the rounds, had his photo taken everywhere, amateur right up to a professional photo shoot.  In fact, several gals and I had our pictures taken him and considered it quite an honor.  I still remember the guy who took the pictures asking if this was a band or something.  I hope I still have the photo someplace. As I recall he was in his “James Frog” attire and we were the “Frog Girls” instead of the “Bond Girls”.

It was a long running joke, although more than one time, Phineis was frognapped and held for ransom by those of the group who had enough of him.  I think it was more of a game then anything else.  The guy who owned him always got him back.

I don’t know where Phineis or his owner are today but I remember those days fondly.  It was great fun for those of us who were willing to partake of it and never taken very serious. Although, I will admit, I thought the credit card was going a bit far.

I’ll just end my little tale with a request that you, DR Panni, add me to the list for future Chooster e-mail pictures.   :)

I guess we are going to sitting next to one another at Jewish Thighs.  My seat is D8.  Who has D9?

As you can imagine, yesterday was quite an exciting day for me.  I was driving seventy MPH on the drive home without even realizing it!  I NEVER drive that fast!  And it was so quiet.  I had to put the window down to have some noise.  I’m going to have to get used to the pedals.  I had to really push the vans to make it go or stop.

Mom is thrilled.  I was right that the running board and the handle would do wonders to help her get in/out.  I hope she will be more comfortable and want to go out a bit more.

As for your request to “borrow” Bonnie, DR Vixmom.  In a word, NO!  She’s mine all mine!  ;D ;) :)

I hope you start feeling better JMK.

Nice to see you WFO.  I look forward to saying hello in person!

DR Jose, I would like to hear more about what you found for the Pocket PC.  You know that I have one as well.  I want to get a modem for it.  What did you see?  What kinds of programs?  And (more important) WHERE exactly did you see them?

If you buy a modem, please tell me what kind you got and how you got it to work.

BTW, I’m glad that your foot is getting better.

Okay, folks, here is all I have to say on the subject. I think each person here has the right to say whatever he or she wants - as long as it is not personally demeaning or hurtful. Ron Pulliam was expressing his opinion and that's fine. I found nothing mean-spirited about what he said. He was of the opinion that there were things going on in the world that we should pay attention to rather than the rooster. Fine. I have no problem with that.

Frankly, I really don't give a f-k what anyone thinks of a stupid wooden rooster. The reason I started posting pictures of it in the first place was because one of the DRs suggested it would be funny to see it in different locations around the house. As I said, it really does not bother me if certain people do not like the rooster.

What DOES bother me are some of Mr. Pogue's comments. And yes, I do find them mean-spirited. They are not about the wooden rooster - they are about me. Mr. Pogue does not like me, which is his right. However, it is my right to protest posts which are hurtful in a personal sense.
I found Mr. Pogue's comments insulting - and I repeat, not to the wooden rooster - but to me. I think I have certainly posted my share of worthwhile, insightful, humorous comments on this site and have earned - or should have earned - the respect befittting any person here. I would not dream of saying to Mr. Pogue, or anyone else here, some of the things he has said today about me.
I would ask for an apology, but the likelihood of that is pretty remote. So I would just ask that Mr. Pogue ignore my posts from now on. Just skip over them so that his sensibilities are not offended.
I was actually going to stop posting altogether after reading what he had to say this morning. But that would be a cowardly thing to do.
I'm very fond of this site. I find it a safe haven. I'm afraid that Mr. Pogue's remarks have made it somewhat less of a safe haven for me. So, I'll do what I'm asking him to do - which is to ignore his posts.

Well...what a can of worms has been opened.  And what a bunch of malarkay it is.  And Panni's emnity toward me (and The Lovely Wife, I might add) goes back a little further than today.  I think people will notice that no where in any of my posts is Panni mentioned.
I don't dislike Panni.  Quite frankly,I just don't think of her much one way or another.  She has no impact in my life.

She's pissed off at me and The Lovely Wife, because right after our Christmas Party this year, she kept pestering BK, "Why doesn't he invite me to his parties?"  In his exasperation and in his confusion as to why he should be asked this question, BK told her, "Why don't you just ask him?"  So, unbelieveably, she did.

Now understand...The Lovely Wife and I hardly know Panni.  We supped with her and BK once. We were at  aHaines/Kimlet breakfast once with her, BK, Jay, Jane and her husband.

The other times we have crossed paths is at a few BK signings and What If?.  Our meetings have been largely casual and of no great depth.  We had nothing against her at all.  She was pleasant enough, but she hasn't been an intimate of ours.

So imagine our embarrassment for her when she actually took BK up on his suggestion and wrote us a note, asking why we did not invite her to our parties.  Then going through a long resume of her attributes as to why we should invite her.  Essentially suggesting she was a worthy person and should be invited to our parties.

Overcoming our stunned reaction, we wrote her a polite but firm note that we were a bit surprised that a relative stranger should lobby to be invited to our parties and feel obligated to send us a litany of her good points as to why we should.  And that we found it somewhat presumptuous and rude that she should make suggestions about who we should invite to our parties.  We had nothing personal against her, but she was someone we knew only slightly through Mr. Kimmel and it was our pleasure to choose our guests, not hers.

We got back a rather hysterical note that said she had never been so insulted and that we were the ones who were being rude and couldn't we tell the letter was light-hearted and jokey?  And that we had misinterpreted her letter.

Again, puzzled and shocked, we wrote her back...still even-tempered but a bit more curtly.  We did not think we had misinterpreted the note (and jokey or not, it was still rude and presumptuous).  And that it was often the case when one did not get the hoped-for response to claim they were misinterpreted.

This precipitated one more hysterical email right before Bruce's Christmas Party.  Where she told us that she would not speak to us at the party and we shouldn't speak to her.

We wrote back...again even-temperedly and politely ,but firmly...that she was still trying to dictate our behaviour and that we wouldn't think of spoiling the festivity of  our friend's party by making a scene and that if the occasion merited it, we would greet her in the spirit of the season and she could respond however she felt fit.   But we weren't about to show our butts.

I would have liked to have pointed out to Panni that night that none of my party guests were at Bruce's party, just as none of his guests were at my party.  Intimacy is the reason you invite people into your house.  Panni was not our intimate.  She was in Bruce's circle; not our circle.  And though the two circles have crossed occasionally, it has been rare.  But Panni does not seem to understand that it is not feasible for me to invite to my parties not only my friends, but also all the people my friends know too.

Now, we still have no real animosity toward Panni, other than we find this whole past incident rather silly, irritating , and somewhat desperate.   I would never even ask a good friend why I wasn't invited to their party, let alone a stranger. I find that in extraordinary bad taste.  But I guess that's my sense of decorum.

But that's the straight skinny. And so now she find plots and invective in anything we say and thinks that anything we say is about her. And keeps grinding the axe.

I cannot share Panni's letters with you, as they are her property and not mine to do so.  But if the The Lovely Wife gives permission once she has read this whole silly-ass flibbety-gibbet sturm and drang, I will be happy to post them and share them with you and I think you will see that we were perfectly reasonable at all times and within our rights to be somewhat aghast to have someone writing us to crash our social circle without first being invited in.  But I suspect The Lovely Wife may wish to have this nonsense go no further...and keep private correspondence private.

So I don't care if this is a safe haven or not for Panni.  It's not my responsibility to make it safe haven for her, just as it is not my responsibility to invite her to my parties, or to make her my friend.  She chose not to be friendly, I chose merely not to invite her to my party...which is understandable.  There are a lot of pleasant people with whom I'm friendly but not friends who I don't invite to my parties.

If this has become an unsafe haven for her, I suggest she look to her own hysteria and teeth-gnashing and trumped-up sense of drama as the cause.  It's not anything I or The Lovely Wife are doing to her.

There was a change of dinner plans.  What der B really wanted was soup, so I poached a couple of chicken breasts in some broth, added some herbs, carrots and celery, and filled the meal with egg noodles.  The tonkatsu can wait a day or two; right now his muscles are feeling very immobile, and comfort food was called for.

elmore, with all due respect (and I respect you far more than you know),I think I have a perfect right to defend myself against distortion, lies, and calumny.  Panni flung the first accusations.  She makes claims but offers no proof.  As if her accusations were proof in themselves.  Granted, it has become the culture we live in...the accusation becomes damning enough.

I think my case was dispassionately and reasonably stated.  It was not rife with injured innocence and incensed umbrage as hers has been.

And then she thinks she's taking the high-road by saying she doesn't need to respond. She doesn't respond because she knows her letters to us alone would prove my point.

Michael, I would have loved for it to remained private.  I did not come out blowing a string of inaccurate accusations.  All this happened way back in mid-December.  You didn't see me coming onto the post flinging this crap around then.

Oh, I also make a correction.  I did mention Panni in one post today, but it certainly was in no way insulting.

If Panni wishes to blame all sorts of imagined injustices on me and mine, so be it.  All I can do is tell the simple truth.  And the simple truth is Panni is upset not because we "dislike" her, but rather because we are indifferent to her.  And that somehow, inexplicably, gnaws her soul...if it didn't ,then how could anything we do or say make this an unsafe haven for her?

Believe it or not...It ain't going to greatly impact my life either way.

I mentioned a few weeks ago, when I was listening to Lori's commentary on her Creature DVD, that she got her job after passing muster with Sophie Rosenstein.   Can anyone definitively tell me what Sophie's first husband Arthur's last name was?  Arthur was Frances' business manager and I have a stack of stuff she gave to him (including her passport), but I don't have anything with his last name on it.

DR JMK - George Eells reports in FINAL GIG that Sophie's husband began as a wholesaler of women's hats named Arthur Gage.  You might find him in one of your Seattle City Directories of the mid 30's.  He of course became a business manager when Frances brought Sophie to Hollywood to prepare an actress for a test and was then hired by the Warner Bros. as an acting coach.

Gage also owned a little theatre in Seattle or West Seattle where Frances did Uncle Vanya, I think.

"That'll be the day." John Wayne in, what?

"Has anyone ever told you that you overplay your various roles rather severely, Mr. Kaplan?  First you're the outraged Madison Avenue man who claims he has been mistaken for someone else.  Then you play a fugitive from justice, supposedly trying to clear his name of a crime he knows he didn't commit.  And now, you play the peevish lover, stung by jealousy and betrayal.   Seems to me you fellows could use a little less training from the FBI and a little more from the Actor's Studio."

Yeah--I remember your bio of Sophie on the FF site (in fact I just went back and looked at it again).  The thing that confuses me is there are other sources that have his name as Blaine, Blair and a couple of others that escape me right now.

It's interesting that on the FF site you have a pic of Sophie with Viveca Lindfors and I won that eBay photo of SR and Gig from Kristofer Tabori.   I had never put two and two together before.

George, the amateur Freudian in me just burst out laughing that maybe the only reason I think of Birds of Paradise when I listen to FAPP is because of the singing crow, LOL.

But then I feel like I should have it because of the cast:  Todd Graff, Crista Moore, Donna Murphy, J. K. Simmons and Barbara Walsh.  These are performers that I really like (okay, I only have Todd Graff in Baby, but I like him in it) and I want to have more (if not all...which isn't possible) of their recordings.

DRGeorge, I loved BIRDS OF PARADISE, which played too short a run at the Promenade Theatre.  David Evans, with whom I did OH, KAY! at Goodspeed, wrote a lovely score and Winnie Holzman wrote a wonderfully smart libretto based on THE SEAGULL.  She also wrote one of my favorite lyrics:  "Chekhov wrote in Russian which is Greek to me."

I haven't checked IMDb yet to be sure, but my kids were watching Spiderman 2 today and I'm pretty sure Donna Murphy was playing "Doc Oc"'s wife (if you don't know who "Doc Oc" is, you don't have two young boys).  :)

I saw Donna in Passion, which unfortunately for me was the week my Uncle died (which is why I was in NYC) and four weeks to the day after my Dad had died.  It was not the show to see under such circumstances.  But as I've probably mentioned here before, I was sitting next to Mary Tyler Moore, so that gave me something other than the show to concentrate on.   ;D

I'm trying to figure out the relationship between Kristofer Tabori and Don Siegel. We had a handyman once - Noel Siegel - and he was Kristofer's half-brother. Siegel was married to Doe Avedon and Viveca Lindfors... Okay, Lindfors was Tabori's mother - so Siegel was either his father of stepfather and Noel was probably Avedon's son. And I don't know who the hippie was. Maybe Siegel's cousin, Moe.

Tonight I watched a truly bizarre flick on TCM:  Tomorrow The World, about a Hitler youth who is taken in by a WWII era American family (and an Anne Tyler fractured family, at that.)  It started off rather silly, as the family welcomes and attempts to mainstream this Li'l Adolph into their world.  But as the movie progressed and we see how this kid bullies, manipulates and lies his way through this Donna Reed community, it became suspensfully engrossing and at times disturbing.  The kid who played the part would certainly give Patty McCormack a run for her money.  And there is the most violent fist fight I believe I have ever seen in a movie from this era and it takes place between two young boys.  Unfortunately, the movie tacks on a completely unbelievable and unrealistic ending that just about makes the entire film worthless.  And of course, the whole thing is basically propaganda.  But still, the movie did have its moments.

DR Danise - I went to CompUSA.  There was a large kiosk display by the digital camera and PDA display cases.

As for software, most of it was games (solitaire variations, arcade stuff, etc.).  But there were also Pocket PC versions of Money, Streets and Trips, calendar and scheduling programs, etc.  I knew all that stuff was out there, I had just hadn't actively looked at any of it.

As for accessories - portable, folding keyboard (full-size keys!), battery pack attachments, other "packs" which allow you to use compact flash cards and PCMCIA cards (like the ones you would use for a laptop), etc.

As for a modem, most of the modem cards would require one of the add-on "packs" since they would require extra battery power to run.  Wired (with a phone jack in them) and wireless modems are available.  Surprisingly, most of the modems run between $60-80.  However, the "packs" run about $150, so...  I did see a listing for a wireless modem/network card that can plug right into the Pocket PC slot, but they didn't have one in stock.

When I got home, I started researching a bunch of stuff on the web.  There is a LOT of stuff out there.  There was one technical site which sort of helped, but it was a bit too technical (even for me, and I usually like all that specificity).  But there are also a lots of vendors that sell software and hardware for PDAs/Pocket PCs.  Just "google" your Pocket PC make and model number, and a bunch of listings will come up.  -That's what I did.

In the meantime, here are a few of the sites that had some real cool stuff:

http://www.pocketgear.com

http://www.mobileplanet.com

http://www.pdastreet.com

And the technical site I visited was:

http://www.cewindows.net

*There is some very good information on the site, but, again, there is a lot of technical jargon to wade through depending upon what you are looking for.

Oh!  I also got a nice listing from my manufacturer's website.  I just plugged in the model number, and a whole listing of accessories came up - even stuff made by a third party.  Of course, this was one of the last places I looked.  DUH!

Hope this helps.  Just e-mail me if you need any help - since I'm still investigating the possibilities too.

Yes, there is also a girl hippie with Bud and Kristofer.  I can't remember her name.

Alias was fun.  What I am finding fascinating about Alias this season is the sheer lack of anybody talking about it on this here site.  Last season, it was all the rage.

(Is that even the correct quote?)

Just remember, if he asks you to pull his lumpia...  Just tell him to keep his longanisa in his pancit!

DR Jose how is your weather?  The loacl weather forecasters threatened us with another 3 - 6 inches  of snow between 1 am and this morning but all we saw was a light dusting,   the clouds look omnious however.....

Sorry, I meant to answer this earlier...

Well, after the fact, we had a typical winter day.  No precip, but temps in the 30s.  A cold front is moving in, and we're supposed to be in the 20s tomorrow, but it's supposed to warm up a little bit this weekend.  Rain/sleet/snow is expected on Sunday - it will all depend upon the air temp.

And that's the weather... Over to you, Mitch, with sports!...

And you told me you didn't speak Tagalog.

Pshaw!

Well... Only the words that count!

 :o

Of course, all those words are food:
lumpia = Filipino eggrolls
longanisa = A type of Filipino sausage, a cross between Spanish chorizo secco (dry) and pepperoni, but on the sweet side
pancit = The national noodle dish of the Phillipines.  So many variations, but a bunch of them do contain longanisa.

...Like I said, only the words that count!

 :D

Btw, "pshaw" is not Tagalog.   ;)

OH! I'm off tomorrow too!  After my morning baby-sitting, I may actually watch a DVD or two (yes, DR MBarnum, it's on the top of the pile), and/or go out and see a movie in the theatres!  And then tomorrow night is Must See TV which I haven't seen in a while.  -Of course, since the decline of Must See TV has been reported here on this site and elsewhere... But I do plan on watching "ER"... The previews... Ooohh!

I think the first comedy couple I remember as a kid was (were?) Laurel and Hardy. Except I remember them as "Stan es Pan" which is how they were known in Hungary. But I know I didn't see them in Hungary -- so I must be thinking of what my mother called them when we saw their old films on TV in Canada...

In the Irony department (right next to Ladies Lingerie)... When I went to take the Wonderdog for a brief evening walk a lttle while ago, I found a book in an envelope lying on my doorstep. It had been left by the world's quietest messenger service, as I didn't hear a thing. The book was accompanied by a letter from a production company asking me to read it and see if I "respond to the material." They're going to make it into a CGI feature - the first of a trilogy. To cut to the chase -- I read the first chapter. It's narrated by a bird -- who calls himself "The Chooser." Honestly. Would I lie to you?

Is it about using production notes for target practice? Banning the word "arc" from the English language? I'd think of more if I weren't tired...
