Well, I really need to go to sleep now.   My niece wants to go to the drive-in, if the movie she wants to see (I forget which) is pkaying.  I guess they only update their website (http://www.skylinedrive-in.com) each Friday, but not right at midnight.  It hasn't been updated yet, as of THIS post.

I had to read Intruder in the Dust in high school. Horrible introduction to Faulkner, especially with the 75-page sermon toward the end. The movie was championed by Pauline Kael, if I recall correctly, but I don’t recall much about it except it has the boy from The Yearling in it, Claude Jarman Jr.

I didn't know The Swingle Singers stayed active and as prolific for as long as they did. That first iconic album, Bach's Greatest Hits, was issued around 1963. I bought it and wore my first copy of it down as quickly as Mary Poppins and West Side Story and other personal landmarks at that time. I clearly remember its impact. It was a sensation, not to use the word lightly, especially among our high school choral department where we also played that record to death at every chance. Our wonderful director also loved it and she eventually got us the SATB arrangement of the signature "Bouree" which at some point we performed. I might even have phonographic evidence of that.

I keep conflating the Swingle Singers with the 1980s group Swing Out Sister.

Oh my god. According to my little film collection database, I still have Odds Against Tomorrow on an off-the-air VHS tape. Oy!

Well, it did sound familiar, if only vaguely so.

This is amazing if true (I'll have to go down and look), because I only have some two dozen VHS tapes left out of the few hundred I'd originally accumulated.

Jane, I don't know if I mentioned it here, but there were an unusual number of planes with delays and changed gates at Seattle/Tacoma Airport last Friday.  But they did let everyone who gave an email address know by email.

Title: Re: SWINGING WITH THE SWINGLE SINGERS
Post by: FJL on June 22, 2018, 06:09:48 AM
And yet even though my plane was over an hour late departing, it got in only a half-hour or so late.  I guess they build delays into the announced flight time, figuring no one will ever complain about a plane getting in earlier than the official schedule.

It rained very hard last night during rehearsal, and two leaks in the roof were discovered.

I think they were around the cupolas....the roofer has been notified, and he will check on it one day next week.

Until then, two metal Hard Knock Life buckets have been reduced to collected rainwater....ah the vagaries of Show Business...  Of course only ONE of them made it to the stage during the most recent production....no time for scrubbing them floors when there's flipping and flopping to get done!

I  never would have expected booing the cast at Jerome Robbins' Broadway, so I'm wondering what's next.

Gotta wonder if it were written in the P.C. 2010s an audience having fun watching scared orphans sing and dance would be picketed.

Post by: FJL on June 22, 2018, 06:30:00 AM
It's a strange issue with a show like "Jerome Robbins' Broadway," which has so many different ethnic characters.  maybe it's unplayable unless there are no budgetary concerns about the cast size?  This is from BWW:

The Muny Releases Statement in Response to Jerome Robbins' Broadway 'Yellowface' Complaints

The Muny has issued a response to both social media complaints and a small protest during a performance of Jerome Robbins' Broadway at the theatre this week. During a segment of the show, reenacting parts of The King and I, a group of 15 protestors were ejected while chanting 'no yellowface' during a scene where a white actress played 'Tuptim', a character from Burma (now Myanmar) in the scene. For more information on the protestors, click here. The Muny has now issued a statement in response:

"In our production of Jerome Robbins' Broadway, The Muny endeavored to stay true to the original staging of its original Broadway production, a show that was created and intended to celebrate and re-create some of the most iconic dances in musical theatre history. In that pursuit, moments in the production have caused hurt and offense - a disappointing and unintended result for which we have great regret. While audiences evolve, all of us who proudly steward this art to our communities face the same challenge. That at times the events, the stories, the ideas which create the narrative of our productions represent frozen moments in time that are at odds with what we now understand. In retrospect, greater contextual explanation and scrutiny are valuable tools which could have been better employed for our production.

The reality of this particular production is that it also presents a challenge that has never been faced since its original 1989 Broadway staging. Essentially starring every lead character from 11 of Robbins' greatest choreographic successes, the production is a huge challenge to cast from many perspectives. Gifted with a director who was part of the original production, The Muny's creative team assembled a diverse, talented cast to bring life to this production. Although the decision to include a non-Asian performer as one of three leads in The King and I scene of Jerome Robbins' Broadway was a function of casting realities for a show of large scale, in hindsight, that was a bad decision that has caused hurt. Again, the hurt that this has caused was unintended and the conversation it has yielded is incredibly valuable for our institution and for the industry of musical theatre.

We do hope that those who have felt harm have also felt heard. We ask that your reaction be measured in that the performers in this show find themselves in an unfortunate and uncomfortable position, but they are not ultimately at fault. As artists and as human beings, they deserve respect and support. We ask that for all our companies, as we close this production and prepare to open The Wiz this week. Tremendous work and passion have gone into each of our productions for this centennial season, and we are proud of and thankful to all the artisans who are a part of that process.

As an institution, we own the responsibility of what happens on our stage for better or for worse. We will continue to welcome the lessons and the feedback that result from moments like this and apply them in a meaningful way as we move forward. Our commitment, belief and dedication to inclusive and diverse casting, as well as honest examination of imagery and ideas in our productions, is real and passionate. Representation matters to The Muny.

Sincerely,
The Muny"

Thank you all for your good wishes. I'm sure Rex will be ok for a while yet. I just have to make sure he gets some water in his diet. Last night, I bought some canned cat food nibbles in gravy. I put it in a strainer and added some water to get more gravy. I added the gravy to Rex's canned food and put the nibbles out for the feral cats. Everyone seemed happy. That will have to work for now.

The MUNY thing is, well, Jerome Robbins'  Broadway is a revue of many components and this particular brouhaha is, for me, rather inane.  So, what, in order to satisfy everyone who gets triggered by these things you have to have an all Asian cast performing ONLY The King and I Section?  Which means that all-Asian King and I cast will be playing all the other characters in the show?  Because you have a large cast in Jerome Robbins' Broadway and they play multiple roles - they have to be the BEST dancers around, too.  So, do you have a cast of 100 so that every ethnicity is cast with that ethnicity whether they're the best dance or can even handle the dancing at all?  I would understand this if it were a production of The King and I but it is not.  I'm sure white people are playing Sharks, I'm sure Hispanic people are playing Asians, I'm sure African-American people are playing roles that were not written for African-Americans - because it's a REVUE made up of SCENES (dance numbers) from a whole lot of shows.

That's exactly how I feel.  They're not putting on a production of The King and I.  Why can't this dance musical revue have "non-traditional casting" for individual scenes?? :-\

If buying The Swingle Singers on Amazon - the album you want to start with is Jazz Sebastian Bach which is the original title of Bach's Greatest Hits.  But be careful - two versions available - one replicates the thirteen tracks of the original LP - but the other, which is a legit release from the same label issued five or six years later, contains the follow up volume of Bach and has 23 tracks - same mastering but much better value for money so make sure that's the one you get.  It's fantastic.  Today I got the Swingles album Anyone for Mozart, Bach, Handel, Vivaldi?  It's fantastic, too - amazing really.

THIS (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000046WP/) is what I ordered on Monday.  It's due to arrive between July 3rd and the 19th.  It's going to take that long because I ordered it from Zoverstocks and they're in England.  I've also had very good luck with their descriptions...and it was a great price!  "Used - Very Good" and only $6.80, including shipping!

I just saw that this other listing (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00004UFOL/) says that it's the remastered edition, but it only has the 13 tracks.  Glad I got the 23-track disc!

I will say that the thirteen-track edition sounds just a wee bit better, but it's so minor that it doesn't really matter.

George, yes, I first got the thirteen-track version because I didn't realize the other one had been released.  So I could do the direct comparison.  I just find the thirteen-track version to have slightly cleaner sound but really doubt most would notice it.

Elmore, is La Diva Annabelle going to audition for this supposed upcoming film of Cats? Or is she too good?

I just hope they can get the entire creative team responsible for the film, A CHORUS LINE, to make the film version of CATS!

I’m ushering tonight for William Shatner, who is hosting a showing of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

That would be cool!  Hope you enjoy it.

He was an absolute hoot. Stories about everything from Judgment at Nuremberg to Boston Legal. About 500 paid the extra bucks in order to get an autograph, a photo and the heave-ho. After more than 3 hours of Shatner, I had enjoyed enough.

The big surprise was how well Wrath of Khan holds up. Sure, it's silly, but it's also very effective.

THE most frustrating thing about The Swingle Singers is that Philips issued a box set of eleven CDs that included all the original group's albums through 1972.  And this marvelous box set can be found NOWHERE - I mean not even at exorbitant prices - I mean it does not exist anywhere, and believe me I have looked EVERYWHERE.
