It's starting to resemble an Ionesco play in here.

Adelphia Cable is being very lame right now - perhaps they're doing some late-night work when they think no one is online.  Kreplach.

I downloaded some of my favorite tracks off the CD issue.

Today's notes remind me of a couple of things I haven't thought of since childhood, or at least since some OTHER thing reminded me of childhood.

One is this puppet news anchor character I remember seeing on a children's program I used to watch, "The Great Space Coaster."  I don't remember anything else about the show or the character, except his shtick.  As he reads the news, every word that begins with an "N" is pronounced with an audible "G" preceding it.  His sign-off line, I think, went something like ". . . and remember, no Guh-news is good Guh-news with Gary Guh-nu."

I wasn't too impressed with Gary, even as a child.  I remember thinking what a pale rip-off of Kermit "Thee" Frog's Sesame Street News reporter character he was, to say nothing of the way the portrayal further contributed to the unfair stereotype of exotic animals as having bizarre speech impediments.  Rather insensitive of a children's program, but this WAS the '80s, after all.

The favorite cartoon song topic reminds me of the title song of a 1945 Walter Lantz Cartune which used to turn up in regular rotation during the Woody Woodpecker half hour on the local station.  It was called "Jackson, the Sliphorn King of Polaroo."  Featuring narration by Hans Conreid and trombone solos by Jack Teagarden, I believe its plot concerned a trombone-playing lion who is shipwrecked on the South Pole, where he dazzles the local animal residents with his swingin' virtuousity on the instrument.  They then elect him king, or something.  The most memorable thing about it was the tune, although I can't remember any of the lyrics.

I haven't seen this one in about twenty years, but would surely appreciate knowing if it's ever been released on video in any form.  Anybody into Walter Lantz Cartunes?

Good morning, all!  I'm listening to Mr Guy Haines make his official recording debut with "Her Laughter In My Life," a moment I was present for.  Some folk will say of their involvement with great moments in the twentieth century:
   "The Edsel"
   "The Beatles on Ed Sullivan"
   "Sputnik"
   "Lady Chatterly's Lover"
   "Reality tv shows"

I can say, "Guy Haines' recording debut!"

I've noticed how anmated songs for some of our youngsters haven't extended beyond "The Little Mermaid."  And out of affection, I urge them to pay attention to many of the superlative, and sometimes superior, songs the animated films produced:
SNOW WHITE:  the whole score, even if the voice for our heroine smacks more of lousy, rather than naughty, operetta
PINOCCHIO:  I've Got No Strings, When You Wish Upon a Star
BAMBI:  Love is a Song, Little April Shower
DUMBO:  When I See an Elephant Fly
SONG OF THE SOUTH:  Sooner or Later, Zid-a-dee-doo-dah
CINDERELLA:  A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes
ALICE IN WONDERLAND:  A Very Merry Unbirthday, The March of the Cards (technically, not a song!)
PETER PAN:  The Second Star to the Right
THE JUNGLE BOOK:  The Bare Necessities
GAY PURR-EE:  Little Drops of Rain
MR MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL:  Winter Was Warm

I'm tired!

I see DRGEORGE has made La Femme Jolie's photo up nicely for her avatar, so I won't do it as well!  I was asleep when the request was made.....

Hmmmmmmm.....Miss Marilyn Miller was not in good voice when she was singing the songs for SUNNY - but they seem to have been recorded live on the set, it was a pleasant voice.  HOWEVER she did some fantastic tap dancing, a short solo and a hep duet.  She did the old-fashioned syncopated or hesitation tap that just isn't done anymore and she was GREAT!!  Her untimely death was tragic - and I must go to IMDB to see if there are any more details about her.  June Haver certainly didn't do her justice in that biopic from the late 40's.

Well....early as it is....and a lot of my choices for TOD have been taken.

"Part of Your World" and "Kiss the Girl" from THE LITTLE MERMAID.

"Once Upon a Time With Me" from ONCE UPON A FOREST - by James Horner with a children's chorus and a beautiful female voice singing, don't have the CD here, but this song is lovely as is the rest of the score.

DRJRand54, I don't know if Miss Miller was ever considered a more than passable singer!  It was mostly about personality and her dancing.  I know she was married to Jack Pickford, Mary's brother, and I believe he died from syphilis, which he may have passed to her.  She was Ziegfeld's mistress as well.  Jerome Kern wrote a sweet song for her performances as Peter Pan.  I can't remember if Louise Brooks mentions her in her bio.  She does mention Jack Pickford, who certainly got around!

Good morning all.

I was so sorry to wake to the news about DR Jay’s beloved Roller.  My most sincere condolences to you.

You and DR TD and DRJane need to really think about getting another pet ASAP.  Now I know what your going to say.  It’s to soon.  It would hurt to much but let me tell you something.  Nothing but NO thing is ever going to erase the love you had for your late pet.  No one can take that away from you.  But think about it.  Right now somewhere close to you all are three little doggies that desperately need a good home.

Not to take the place of those lost but to form a new and loving relationship with you three people who obviously have the right kind of love in your hearts to give them that loving home.  Don’t you think that Echo, Minx and Roller, knowing they can’s share your life any longer would like you to give another the chance of that happy home?

I know I’m always telling you guys stories but I don’t know any other way to put things.

Seven years ago I had a dog called “Solo”.  I loved him with all my heart.  One evening when he was twelve years old he started acting funny/strange.  I told Mom I would take him to the vet in the morning.  He asked to go out and something told me to go with him.  He walked around like he was lost then started to shudder and fell over on his one side.

He was little enough that I could pick him up in my arms and by the time I got him inside, my beloved dog was gone.  I can only guess he had a massive stroke or heart attack.

I thought my heart would break.  Solo always waited for me to come home from work and it fair broke my heart to walk into the house with no dog to greet me.

We spoke about getting another dog but my Mom was going in for laser eye surgery and we felt that we should wait until after that to bring a new dog into our lives.

After the surgery was done (the very same day), my Mother said “Let’s go to the pound and get a dog.”.  I wasn’t sure that would be the thing to do but she said she was fine and since I was off from work anyway we should go.

I called the pound only to find that they were closed so I thought we would wait until Saturday to go.  We agreed that it should be a little dog even so Mom could handle it.

Mom need some prescriptions turned in so we went down to the local Walmart.

We were in the car when I saw a boy bend and put something in a box by the side door of the Walmart.  I told Mom I thought he either had kittens or puppies.  She said, “Let’s go look!”  I told her that if it was puppies we would wind up getting one no matter how big it was going to grow and she had said it had to be a small dog.

To make a long story short, yes, we took a puppy.  Number thirteen of thirteen.  The lady who was giving them away had called the pound and was going to take them there but as I already knew, the pound was closed that day.  She decided to see how many she could give away at the Walmart and would take the rest to the pound the next day.

It had only been a week since Solo passed.

The little eight pound puppy we took home grew into a horse and lays at my feet as I type this.

If Solo had not passed away when he did.  If Mom had not had cataract surgery when she did, I would not have been off of work that day.   If the pound had been open that day.

I still miss Solo.  I always will.  I would not trade one precious moment I spent with him but I don’t know what my life would have been like with my beloved Bear.   I will miss him when the time comes.  I would not trade one precious moment I am spending with him now but I know in my heart there will be another doggie that I will have wonder times with in the future.

From Alice in Wonderland: "In a World of My Own."

From Lady and the Tramp: "He's a Tramp."

From Tarzan: "You'll Be In My Heart" (even though it seems like I've heard it a thousand times in the past couple of weeks).

The entire score from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.

I'm dreaming dreams,
I'm scheming schemes, I'm building castles high.
They're born anew, their days are few,
Just like a sweet butterfly.
And as the daylight is dawning,
They come again in the morning!

I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air,
They fly so high,
Nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams
They fade and die.
Fortune's always hiding,
I've looked everywhere,
I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air .

When shadows creep,
When I'm asleep,
To lands of hope I stray!
Then at daybreak,
When I awake,
My bluebird flutters away..
"Happiness, you seem so near me,
Happiness, come forth and cheer me!"

I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air,
They fly so high,
Nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams
They fade and die.
Fortune's always hiding,
I've looked everywhere,
I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air.

I also like "Be Our Guest" a great deal.  A rousing big Broadway-style gets-the-blood-pumping number.  Try though I may, I can't NOT do high kicks during the song's big finish.  Which can be very embarrassing when the song is played in public places.

In a little while I will be heading to Sandy Eggo for an overnighter.  We'll be looking at high performance Italian automotive vehicles this afternoon at the automotive museum in Balboa Park, which will make the Bulgarian Prince very happy.  Then tonight we'll be in attendance at the opening of San Diego Opera's season for a peformance of Mr. Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus, which will make me very happy.

(FYI, in German, "die" is an article, not a verb, lest any Dear Reader thought Die Fledermaus was an operatic version of some violent action motion picture.)

Lovely story, Danise. And thank you for the pictures, Hisaka. It was a year ago this month I lost both Tugger (an old independent cat) and Roxie (a middle-aged "I-love-everyone" dog). It's been a tough year for our animals.

Today we are going to see the tour of "Lion King."

California's storm is headed our way, which accounts for my headache. I hope it (the headache) subsides before curtain. And I'm glad they finished the roof -- just in time!

I wanted to rectify some of my comments yesterday about Marilyn Miller's SUNNY. I was totally wrong.

The movie I was actually describing was her movie debut SALLY (the one filmed in two strip Technicolor). SUNNY was her follow-up and definitely filmed in black and white. It was only 65 minutes long, and I'm thinking a lot of music must have been snipped out (movie musicals had become out of favor by 1930).

I agree about her singing voice. Sort of sweet, but definitely of its period and sounds off today. She also swoops a lot of her phrases. I understand that she refused to be recorded for phonographs. She didn't like the sound of her own voice, and the one time she had some records pressed, she was so unhappy with the results that she refused to allow them to be released.

Anyway, I did want to set the record straight.

I am still incredibly sick, even though I spent most of yesterday sleeping.  Oy.

I also loved Cruella De Vil when I was a kid--one of the first tunes I learned to play on the piano.  My sister still sings it to me occasionally when she visits.   :D

I'm having brain dysfunction this morning--is it I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles or I'm Always Chasing Rainbows that's based on Rachmoninov?  I'm thinking it's Rainbows.

When I used to collect 16mm films, I used to sing Someday My Prints Will Come.

When you're feeling sad and lonely
There's a service I can render
There's a word that I can think of
It's a word so warm and tender

Kreplach
Don't be afraid, just say
Kreplach
Early or late, just say
Kreplach
And then the sky will be blue

Which it is here in the City of Studio.  Bright bright blue.

Good morning!

Ah, the dangers of a new "toy".  I was trying to configure some stuff on my new iBook last night.  Trying, and trying, and trying.  Thankfully, I was able to stop trying since I had "solved" one major issue having to do with the network connection setup.  Whew!  Of course, after I fixed it, I then proceeded to try out various others features that I wasn't able to try until after I had configured everything correctly.  And, of course, by that time, it was almost 4:00AM!!!!  So...

My apologies for being errant and truant yesterday, and due to two shows today, I shall have to be errant and truant again for most of today.

Yes, I do accept my fate: a bitch-slapping with a wet noodle.  Maybe even two wet noodles.

So...

I haven't read the posts, but I have read the Notes, so...

Animated songs:

Baby Mine
Just Around The River Bend
Colors of the Wind (Judy Kuhn's movie version)
Bells of Notre Dame
Out There
Bella Notte
He's A Tramp
Bare Necessities

Oh, and keeping with the Menken theme, I actually like the instrumental in POCOHONTAS that then becomes "If I Never Knew You" over the end credits.  The hook of that melody tugs at my heart strings - and with strings.

...and I few others I know I've forgotten, and that have probably already been mentioned already.  ;)

OK - Time to get ready to head in.

Laters...

"I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" is based on Chopin's "Fantasie-Impromptu".  -Which is otherwise "infamous" for introducing piano students to the concept of "four against three" - at least in the opening fast section.

Good morning.
I was roused earlier than usual (8:30) by calls from one of the foster families, wondering if I was going to be picking up the kids soon.  Such incredible lack of communication in that system.  I was told that someone was covering my Saturday case since it's the last Saturday, but apparently they couldn't do it.  No one bothered to call any of the families involved.  I don't have the other contact info at home, so I'm helpless.  I feel so badly for these families who are just jerked around through the system.  So the worry for them kept me awake, and now I'm up for awhile.

I see a nap in my future

I wish it were bright blue around these here parts.  It's more of a dreary gray outside.

My favourite cartoon songs:

There is a Warners Bros. cartoon that I wish they'd put out on DVD or something that I've only seen once.  I think the title is the title of the song that's feature, sung by a young rabbit, if I recall called I WEAR MY GREEN FEDORA FOR DORA, which has always stayed with me and I love, I send my wife into hysterics with my brief imitation of it, because I only remember the first line...I wish I could find a copy of the song or the cartoon.

The other is in another Warner Bros. cartoon which I do have a copy of called I WANNA SING (about the moona and the junea and the springa).  It's sung by a young owl (and Cartman in one of the South Park does a brief impersonation of it). I also have a Cab Calloway 78 of it.

I do remember Walter Lantz cartunes and it includes one of my fav songs from an Andy Panda cartune..."DON'T LISTEN TO THE DEVIL IN THE WHITE NIGHT GOWN".  Strange but zippy number.

From features, it would have to "WHEN I SEE AN ELEPHANT FLY." from Dumbo.  I also like the Roustabout song.

Since cartoon songs and great dog pictures seem to be on today's agenda. The Lovely Wife used to sing Beauty and the Beast to Hotspur, our late great yorkie.  Below is a picture of Spur about a year before he passed away in 92' at fifteen.  Julieanne still weeps whenever see hears the song or sings it, as it is now indeliably tied to Hotspur.

I think "Baby Mine" would be #1 on my list.  "Christmas Time is Here" would be #2.  "We Can Fly" woulfd be #3.  There are so many others--- from "A Dream Is Wish Your Heart Makes" to "RazzleBerry Dressing."

"I Love to Singa and "Green Fedora" were both legitimate songs  used in the cartoons.  I think Jolson actually did "I Love to Singa" and Warners used it in the cartoon of the same name.  Warners always used all their songs in the cartoons  Smart boys-- they plug the song AND get the money for it.   I wear my green fedora for Dora... "not Alice, not Mary, but for Dora "cause Dora is the one I lo---ove."

Hello - been E&T all week, s'been a long week.  Tech week for "Seussical-The Musical", which opened last night at San Mateo High School in San Mateo.  And I must say, it's very good musically!!! (not that I'm biased)  Anyhow, it's been tough to keep up here at HHW this week, I did read the notes, though.  So, instead of trying to keep with with the posts, I just resigned myself to the notes!

On Tuesday, I woke up at about 3:00am suffering from a bout of food poisening.  Not fun.  I had to play three 50 minute performances of "Seussical" that morning, and I must say, there is nothing worse than playing a show with no dialogue, while going through bouts of nausia.  Not fun.  Everything is fine now, thankfully.

Other than the show opening, it's been a week!!!  Nice to post again.

Current musical theatre phase "Martin Guerre" both the 1996 and 1999 versions.  Has anyone seen this?  I saw it in LA, loved the first act, thought the second act was just bad!!!

Yo! Been outa commission here for what seems like ages. The lady at the place I'm (still!) staying (GOD! somebody find me a sublet!!!) has decided I can't use the phone line. OY!

Anyhow, I've looked at several apartments this week - out of all of them there is ONE that is possible. Still trying to schedule a few more from sublets.com. Hard to get in contact with those folks, for some reason. They list their apartments, then you can't reach 'em. Oh, well...

COLD here - but a lovely blue sky all day. I had forgotten about winter... it's COLD. And I shore ain't as young as I used to be. Can you spell Arthritis? Wish I couldn't...

So I've engaged (finally) a press rep/publicist. She is Judy Jacksina, used to be Cy Coleman's rep. Wild, red-headed woman, high energy, loves my work. Production week is less than 6 weeks away. Load in 6 weeks from Monday. Gosh I'm so excited about it. Sent the sheet music off to Jose a couple of days ago.

And so it goes...

Jay! I'm so sorry about Roller. I have been borrowing other people's dogs since George died 7 years ago. When I need peace, I go to my Happy Place - that's me and George, early in the morning at Rancho Park in LA, every day during 1986. Nobody else around, George and Penny on the dew spangled grass, just happy to be together on a limitless lawn, surrounded by trees, chittered at by birds and squirrels, lost in our own little world.

Grief is a long process, and at the end of it, I know that there really is no loss. Be comforted. Love is never gone. Those happiest times of my life are still here, any time I want to visit. I'm on my way to becoming the kind of person George thought I was. Whatta dawg.

I'm Always Chasing Rainbows

At the end of the rainbow there's happiness
and to find it how often I've tried
but my life is a race, just a wild goose chase
and my dreams have all been denied!

Why have I always been a failure?
What can the reason be?
I wonder if the world's to blame?
I wonder if it could be me?

I'm always chasing rainbows
watching clouds drifting by!
My schemes are just like all of my dreams
ending in the sky!

Some fellows look and find the sunshine
I always look and find the rain!
Some fellows make a winning sometime
I never even make a gain!

Believe me . . .

I'm always chasing rainbows
waiting to find a little blue bird in vain!

( Rainbows seem to fade away! )

Well, as predicted, I ended up taking a two hour nap this afternoon.  Just now I tried to post about the dream I had whilst napping, and realized that it was totally confusing.  The important points - 1.  It was one of those dreams within dreams where eventually you realize you are dreaming 2.  Once I realized I was dreaming, but in something resembling my apartment, the first thing I wanted to do was use the computer to post on HWW and then see if it was somehow there when I woke up for real.  3.  I watched The Net before falling asleep, so the deeper layers of dreams were full of computer viruses and bad men chasing me.

Conclusion - I wasn't able to make any dream posts.  Kinda sad.

If you gnu Susie
Like I gno Susie
Oh! Oh! Oh!
What a girl
There's none so classy
As this fair lassie,
Oh! Oh! Holy Moses
What a chassis,
We went riding
She didn't balk
Back from Yonkers
I'm the one
That had to walk
If you gnu Susie
Like I gno Susie
Oh! Oh!
What a girl.

If you tnu Susie
Like I gno Susie
Oh! Oh! Oh!
What a girl
She wears long tresses
And nice tight dresses
Oh! Oh!

What a future she possesses,
Out in public
How she can yawn
In a parlour
You would think the war was on
If you gnu Susie
Like I gno Susie
Oh! Oh!
What a girl

Hope the dream post made some kind of sense...

Last night I made a big pot of one of my favorite macaroni salads...a simple concoction of salad macaroni, cheese cubes, thawed frozen peas, and mayo.  It's very yummy, and it'll be my food for a few days.  I hope I don't gain too much weight with all that pasta, though...

If you own any MGM DVDs, you should go to:

http://mgmdvdsettlement.com/index.php3

There's a class action lawsuit that's about to be settled and you can either get exchanges on DVDs or $7.10 per DVD.  Now I'm not a huge collector, but a cursory search of my collection found almost 40 titles on their "eligible" list, which means I'll be reaping (hopefully) close to $300 from those who would butcher Hawaii, LOL.

Maybe this has all been posted about a month or so ago during my long absence.  In which case, never mind.  :)
I'm not really sure what the suit is about (TD?  BK?)--but it looks like it has something to do with standard format DVDs being listed as widescreen on the packaging.  The thing that confuses me is they have some Academy ratio films on the list (e.g., 1940's Thief of Bagdad, which obviously was never released in widescreen, but which I'll submit a claim for, since I own it!).

Another thing I noticed in going through my collection:  all of the "classic MGM" films that one most associates with the studio are out on WB DVDs, while the B-listers are all on MGM/UA DVDs.   Doncha just love mergers?

I've eaten yards of pasta and am quite logey now.  I've been watching disc one of the Johnny Carson highlights, which are absolutely hilarious.  A few of them I've never seen.  The clip format is a bit annoying - there are times you really want more.

My friend Margaret just read the first fifty-five pages (yes, fifty-five pages!) of what we hope will be the new book and she loved them.  As some may remember, she was confused by a good deal of the beginning of Writer's Block when I first gave that to her - the milieu confused her, a lot of what was being talked about confused her, and I made a ton of adjustments because of it, all of which were very helpful.  On the Kritzer books she loved everything, but had really excellent thoughts when things weren't "enough" - when she wanted more of this or more of that.  She has an amazing eye and she's so in tune with the way I write, I just couldn't ask for anyone better to be looking a this early stuff.  She had only a couple of comments where she wanted more description or a bit more dialogue, but other than that she said she couldn't put it down.  And then, I explained where it was going and she was very happy with it.  The "where it's going" of course will be the very hard part to write - but other than knowing the basics, I'm not planning any of it.  With me, the book writes itself.  These first fifty-five pages wrote very fast, but when I began them I only knew the central idea and the major event that had to happen.  Other than that, que sera sera.  Now, I can continue on.

It is very sad the program has been discontinued.  Ann, wishing you blue skies and a speedy recovery.

Rancho Park, my childhood sanctuary.  In high school my cat and I would go there to sit under a tree.  He would play and snuggle while I read a book.

Danise your story of Solo and Bear is beautiful.  For us it would not be too soon if I wanted another dog.  I miss Echo terribly, but not having a dog.  Of course if I had a dog I might finally walk along my road again, something I should be doing on this beautiful day.  Keith misses having a dog.  It doesn’t matter.  As long as we have Bogie we can’t put him through the stress a new pet could cause, plus he needs so much care right now we couldn’t give a new dog the proper attention.

The last time I only had a single pet, a cat like now, I was 18 and single-engaged but still single and living in a bachelor apartment.  Lately I have been thinking about the road from there to here.

It's an "automated response line," so don't think you have to wait until Monday.  They ask for your name and address and then it automatically hangs up on you.  :)

Do you know anything about this?  I've been doing a little research and I think it's all a big brouhaha because of those inserts they used to include that showed the difference between P&S and WS.  Evidently the lawsuit is based on the fact that MGM claimed the WS versions were 50% bigger than P&S.  So I guess the reason the non-WS DVDs are on the list is because the inserts were in them.  Isn't that hilarious?  I don't care.  I'll take $300 any day.  I may even have more of them--this was just a first glance look for me.

ENTERPRISE was the first of a multi-episode story (which I didn't know when I started watching). Good episode, but I was angry that nothing I read tipped me off that the episode wasn't self-contained.

I just finished watching "Enterprise" and I didn't know that it was a multi-parter, either.  Actually, haven't all the episodes this season been muli-part episodes?  I also thought that it "looked" different than previous episodes...the lighting, the film/video tape, maybe.  I don't know if the director is new or if he (it was a man, wasn't it?) was just trying something different, but it reminded me a little bit of the look of "Battlestar Galactica."

Evening all.

I had a very nice day today and I hope you did as well.

I went to get the blind for Bonnie and that worked out sort of half and half.

Down side.  They didn’t have the blind (so why did they make me drive out there?).  Upside.  I was promised they would get me one.

Up side, they had the registration for Bonnie.  Down side.  It was somehow mixed up and instead of getting a new tag for Bonnie, the old tag from the van was transferred to the SUV.  Not a big problem.  I’ll just get that 2nd tag on Monday when I go to work.  Being in the County Center does have it’s plusses.

Upside, now that I have the registration for Bonnie, I can take her to be inspected for the insurance company.  They only gave me until 2/2 to have it done or the insurance would be null and void.

Upside, when I mentioned I wanted to have another remote and key made for Bonnie, he told me he would have that done and ready for me next Saturday at half the cost it would have been had I gone to a dealership.

Downside, I have to drive all the way to the other side of town (again) to get it and then again to get the blind when he gets that.

Oh well, such is life.

David Copperfield.  Ahhh, what a wonderful show that man does!  It was well worth the wait to see him after all of these years and I have made myself the promise that I WILL go see him if he ever comes back this way again.

When I was waiting to go into the show, I stuck up a conversation with a lady who was celebrating her 40th birthday today.  She didn’t have anyone who would go to the show with her so she decided to just go on her own.  I told her I was in the same boat and had even traveled to NYC by myself to see some shows.

She said she was going to do that as well someday.  Anyway, we had a real nice chat and I bumped into her again as we were leaving.  She somehow managed to meet Mr. Copperfield.  I said that was a very nice gift for ones birthday.

I always have mixed feelings about standing around stage doors N Not that I did-- I just took my time going to the parking lot and shopped in the little store at the theater.  Part of me would love the chance to say hello but the other part knows I’ll just choke and say something totally dumb and unremarkable so why bother. I sure goofed when I finely got my moment with Michael Ball.  I’m sure I left a big impression with him.

Anyway, I also met a very nice older gentleman who was sitting to my left before the show started.  He was there with his daughter and his 3 granddaughters.  We had a very nice chat about the lack of good shows on TV and the good old days of the variety shows.  Neither of us cared much for the “reality” shows like “Fear Factor”.

I stopped off at Walmart and bought the floor mats for Bonnie along with some other items.   Then it was off to Subway to pick up dinner and home.

All in all a very nice day.

I just found a bunch more.  Don't forget boxed sets (like the Billy Wilder, which has 3 or so on the list).

What I'm wondering is if you still have to have your receipts.  I can't imagine they would require that.  I assume you'll have to tear off the proofs of purchase (finally, they're good for something!).

I'm not sure that is indeed what the lawsuit is about--it's just what some people are saying it's about on Usenet (and we know all about that, don't we?   ;D )

From what I just read about the MGM DVD thing, it looks like the $7.10 is in exchange for the DVDs.  I've only got 3 from the list, and as much as I'd be happy to get an extra $21.30, I don't want to send them three of my DVDs to do so.

I'm not sure that's correct, Jed.  What I understood is you have your choice--either a new DVD or the $7.10.  Look at the actual filing of the plaintiff's complaint on the site.

And, BK, I will join you in a class action suit against eBay anytime you're ready.  They (and their mutant child, PayPal) have screwed me over so many times I can't believe it.
Title: Re:THE GNU GNOTES
Post by: JMK on January 29, 2005, 06:25:18 PM
The thing that's strange about all of this is that the lawsuit is evidently about the INSERTS, not the DVDs themselves.  I still have a bunch of the old MGM inserts that show the difference between P&S and WS, and they say you get 50% more image on WS.  Obviously the Plaintiff is alleging that the width stays the same (it's a semantic thing--and I agree it's frivolous, but it's MGM/UA, so I am happy to take some of their ill-gotten gains, LOL).

I think I solved my sock problem.  I won 6 pairs of womans army issue thermal socks on E-bay.  They should keep my feet warm should I need them to be in NYC in March.

I phoned in my Income Tax last night using TelaTax.  It only takes about 15 minutes.  Wham, Bam, Thank you, Uncle Sam!

Only problem was I wanted my refund direct depostited to my checking account.  It couldn't seem to catch the account number so it said it would just mail the check.  Boo, hiss.  I know that will delay my getting it.   I just hope it comes before the trip.  I was counting on it for my spending money.

Speaking of NYC, has anyone got any plans in place? I have decided that I have to see Harvey Fierstein and that wonderful voice of his.  I am thinking about getting a ticket for Friday night.  Anyone else game?

The shower door, to our newly remodeled shower in our newly remodeled bathroom, was finally installed yesterday.  So today I treated myself to half of the shower experience.  I’m still hesitant to have sprays hitting me from both walls.  Keith loves it but I have visions of water in my eyes.  What I did experience was a nice, from very high up, massaging shower head and two different smaller shower heads located below the water controls, one above the other.  Those kind of tickled.  The new shower is nice and big and all that water kept me very warm and happy.

Scott JANE EYRE, THE STRANGER with Orson Welles, Eugene O'Neill's BEYOND THE HORIZON, A Michael Caine film A SHOCK TO THE SYSTEM, several more...most of this lot except for the play and the Izzard stuff was between a $1.98 and $4.99.  We also picked up THE FROGS CD.  Then we walked back.  All told, probably about 6miles.

There's a fabulous Trevor Nunn film called Lady Jane that I highly recommend.  As history, it's bunk, but for spectacle and romanticized history, it's great.  Plus, it has a magnificent score by the died-way-too-young Stephen ("Blondel") Oliver.

Jane, on my mother's side I am related to the Schellenbergs (lots of variant spellings--her maiden name was actually Shallenberger), who fought the Hapsburgs in the 14th century to create the Swiss Confederacy.  My ancestors were the Magisters (or something like that) of the Canton of Uri where Zurich is.  There's a little town called Shallenberg right on the Swiss/Austrian border and we were treated like royalty when we stayed there one night (of course my Mother did not hesitate to sign in at the hotel with her maiden name LOL).  I got a totally cool family tree from my Aunt that traces everything back to the mid 1200s.  It's especially amazing since we know next to nothing about my father's side of the family.

I'm telling you, I'm only watching la cinema Francaise from now on.  Sadly, they've put the US to shame, movie-wise.

Td will you post an adult photo of Dixie Bell?

Happily, but she's only twelve weeks old right now.  .  . are you sure you want me to wait TWELVE MONTHS? ? ?

I'm not sure that's correct, Jed.  What I understood is you have your choice--either a new DVD or the $7.10.  Look at the actual filing of the plaintiff's complaint on the site.

Didn't sound right to me, either, but reading the language of the suit, it looks like you can exchange your current DVD for either a new one or $7.10.  Perhaps I misread again...

Since I have been watching in high definition, I hadn't noticed anything different about the look of the show, but maybe there was something.

DR LADY Jane - one must also think of IVANHOE when one thinks about you from now on.    ;D

As for Dixie Bell, this is the photo which will be hung next to Minx' portrait:

I watched the delightful HOME ON THE RANGE today. Another Disney animated feature that was unfairly neglected because it wasn't computer animation. I found it lots of fun, and there are several Alan Menken songs in the movie that are tuneful and just perfect for the western motif. And great character voices: Roseanne, Judi Dench, Randy Quaid, Jennifer Tilly, Steve Buscemi, Cuba Gooding, Jr.

I too find HOME ON THE RANGE to be highly underrated!
Love Bonnie Raitt's performance (and the surrounding animation) of "Will the Sun Ever Shine Again?" and kd lang's "Little Patch of Heaven."  Both songs are indeed standard worthy, as is Menken's "Sailing On," which has just been granted new life on Nancy LaMott's Live at the Tavern on the Green cd.

Yes, thanks for mentioning the vocal singing talent. I thought all of their renditions were really excellent. Played the song sequences back again because I liked them so much. I had no idea when I got the DVD that there were ANY songs in it, much less songs written by Alan Menken.

I have at least THIRTY of the MGM titles, but, quite a few of those are films which will probably not see another dvd release in the near future, i.e., EQUUS, THE DECAMERON, WOMEN IN LOVE, SPETTERS.

If you stick it out through the closing credits, you get to hear Alan Menken sing, too.

Okay, as long as it's an official lull . . .

Anything ever come of that "Goodbye Mr. Chips" long-lost rejected-song-demo-LP-set?  Last I heard you were waiting for a CD transfer to be made.

I'll have to remind that guy again - I got one package from him, but I guess he hadn't had time to do it before mailing it, and maybe he's forgotten.  I've polished off tomorrow's notes and can now relax until midnight.  Now, let's get some postin' goin' on, shall we?

My friend just dropped off some of her faboo potato salad.  I've already eaten a ton of pasta, and a couple of candy bars.  Dare I eat a little of this tonight, or do I show strength and wait until tomorrow?

I cannot get into The Turning Point this evening.  It's just too Herb Ross for me.  He really wasn't a very good director and I find all his films ugly to look at.  And the script by Arthur Laurents is a bit too arch for my tastes.

Good Evening!

We're in the midst of another bout of "wintry mix".  Snow, sleet, ice... It was actually a little slippery here and there driving home tonight.  But I'm safe and sound.

I still have to read all of yesterday's posts, but I did read today's posts.

And now I'm going to get ready for bed.  This was a long day for me, and tomorrow will be another long one.

However, tomorrow is also my Dad's birthday, and we'll be having a birthday lunch at his favorite Chinese restaurant.  -We'll see what the roads are like in the morning.

DR Matthew - I saw MARTIN GUERRE in DC at the Kennedy Center.  Eh...  My friend, Erin Dilly, was playing Bertrande; Hugh Panaro, with whom I would get to work with later, and Stephen Buntrock were the two male leads.  -Oh, and Erin and Stephen got married last year!  Handsome couple as they say.

I just had to wonder how much a difference casting someone other than Jose Llana as Guillaume would have made.  Imho, he was soooo miscast.  And that wig of his was horrible!  -And I don't like my villains to have a lisp.  ;)

But I did love what's-his-name as the town "clown".  Great performance.... Oh, Michael Arnold.

BK - "kishka" - that was what we had a Jerry's!

-And if I remember correctly, it was actually pretty good.  However, the chopped salad you ordered that night was missing some of it's "chops".
