Title: PIE DAY
Post by: bk on February 04, 2005, 11:58:56 PM
Well, you've read the notes with gay abandon whilst flitting about like a gazelle on a bi-plane eating a piece of pie, and now it is time for you to post until the pied cows come home.

Also love Bogie in Casablanca and In a Lonely Place.  Also love Eddie G. in Soylent Green.  Also love Cagney in White Heat.

The iPod is on, and I'm listening to my latest playlist (on shuffle) - The Music of Joe Hisaishi.  I've only entered three soundtracks so far  - about fifty-nine tracks - but I have lots more to go.

Well, much as I'd like to carry on a conversation with myself, I shall toddle off to the bedroom environment since there is no one here to have discourse with.

And to that, I say EFFLUVIA!
Title: Re:PIE DAY
Post by: Charles Pogue on February 05, 2005, 12:45:15 AM
Now's me too.  First off, I'm still unclogging pie from my arteries after our gluttony at the House of Pies thursday night (Though the thought of a good pork pie is suddenly tantalizing to me right now...My arteries are setting off a distress alarm to chase away that thought).

I checked the showstoppers's website...they seem to be rolling out a passable line-up and a few faces I've never seen at them before...Freddy "Boom-Boom" Cannon?  Who knew he was even still alive...?  Shani Wallis?  Babs McNair, used to be quite a looker in her day...

I agree Gladys George is terrific in ROARING TWENTIES. Haven't seen it in years.  Must soon.

Favourite Bogie:  Hands down, MALTESE FALCON...I know most will say CASABLANCA, but it's the FALCON for me, probably followed by THE BIG SLEEP.

Eddie G. in KEY LARGO. His whispering unheard obscenties in Lauren Bacall's ear is just so creepy.  Also his making Claire Trevor sing and his delight when Bogie says"I'll tell you what he wants...more."  "Yeah, yeah, that's what I want...More! More!"  His Wolf Larsen in the SEA-WOLF I remember being pretty menacing, and let us not forget his turn in 1O COMMANDMENTS: "Where's your Moses now?!"  I remember liking him inDOUBLE INDEMNITY, but I must see it again.

CAGNEY: Man, this is hard to pick. I think ONE,TWO,THREE is a tour de force performance.  I like him in FOOTLIGHT PARADE and most of his musical stuff.  WHITE HEAT is pretty chilling stuff.  Another comedy...BOY MEETS GIRL is great fun!  His TIME OF YOUR LIFE is a wonderful amiable performance.  I never saw the film until about a year ago...and quite enjoyed it.

Robinson is also good in ALL MY SONS.  and I could swear I once saw him in a film version playing Tony in THEY KNEW WHAT THEY WANTED.

Some other nice Bogies:  High Sierra, Dead End, To Have and To Have Not, and The Desperate Hours.

I noticed that showstoppers is undercutting Ray Courts by charging only 12 bucks and that Joanie Sommers is going to be there.  Ain't she a buddy of your'n, BK?
Title: Re:PIE DAY
Post by: bk on February 05, 2005, 12:58:22 AM
I just visited the website, and the show is now a must-do for me.  My old pal Joanie Sommers will be there, and Gary Lockwood, who I guest-starred with on The Young Lawyers, and who was so wonderful to me on that, my first TV acting gig.  And Patty Andrews!  And a handful of other really interesting folks.  It's actually a more interesting lineup than the Courts show, I hate to say it.

Good morning, all!  This is the first morning in some time that DRBen, Michael Shayne, or Hisaka is not on site as well.  20 minutes to Barnes and Noble, which sounds like the title for an Agnes DeMille ballet from a 40s musical.

I picked up two interesting books on the Chicago Iroquois Theatre fire of 1903 yesterday, which I hope will help me with my BABES IN TOYLAND reportage, and I was looking at a new history of the Black Death, which seemed interesting.

As I type this, Miss Daisy Egan is singing "44 Sunsets."

TOD:
  Bogart:  THE MALTESE FALCON
  Robinson:  DOUBLE INDEMNITY
  Cagney:  YANKEE DOODLE DANDY

Pie?  Sorry!  I find no good pie in New York these days, and I mourn the dearth of good bakeries on the Upper West Side.  Apple pie a la mode would be lovely today and perk me right up.  The best pies in New York at the moment are those at the Little Pie Factory on West 43rd, but I'll never get down there today.

First of all, many belated thanks to DR td for his very complete and informative information on the Doris Day boxed DVD set. No, I don't read the forums at Scarlet Street (or anywhere else but here for that matter).

I was a bit dismayed that Warners "stuck in" CALAMITY JANE and THE PAJAMA GAME, not that they are terrific films and among my Doris favorites but that they've been out for years now and I'd think that most people who were going to buy them would have already done so. I have no need for two more copies so I'll have to pass on the boxed set and buy the other films individually. Can't wait to get them.

(Warners did the same thing with the Hitchcock box including the same - excellent - transfer of NORTH BY NORTHWEST thus making it ridiculous to buy the whole box.)

I like the three actors in question when they show their softer, gentler sides so my favorites would include:

Cagney - CITY FOR CONQUEST

Bogart - CASABLANCA

Robinson - DR. ERLICH'S MAGINC BULLET

But they're such wonderful actors that you can't go wrong with any of their performances even when the films in question are a bit lacking.

Yes, I think Cagney is unmatched in ONE, TWO, THREE and YANKEE DOODLE DANDY; Bogart unparalleled in THE MALTESE FALCON and THE AFRICAN QUEEN, Robinson mesmerizing in LITTLE CAESAR and DOUBLE INDEMNITY. They really were born screen actors.

Cagney - Yankee Doodle Dandy

Bogart - Casablanca and African Queen

Haven't seen much Robinson, but I have been to Malabar Farm, near Mansfield, OH, and walked down the same staircase Lauen Bacall walked down when she and Bogie were married there.  The tour also included the bedroom where they spent their wedding night.

Today, I just might bake a pie...

Charles Pogue, my letter to EW concerned a review/think piece on the current status of WILL & GRACE. Rather than simply blindly attacking the show which has been on a downward slope for a couple of seasons now, the writer gave a thoughtful analysis on where the show has gone wrong and what can be done to save it. I appreciated the extra effort that went into his well reasoned and admirable think piece and wanted to tell him so. A cheaper writer would have just used his 500-700 words to mud sling, but this was full of much more constructive criticism which I feel many critics today could take a lesson from especially those writing about TV which CAN change the direction a series is going if someone is astute enough to recognize what's right and what's wrong.

I am planning to go to the April Court's show, but this Showstoppers show looks pretty good too...I would love to see Robert Horton and Robert Colbert! And of course JRand54 would certainly want to get Dawn Lyn's autograph! LOL!

Alas, I can only afford to go once so Court's it will have to be.

Good Morning!!

The radio went off at 8:00. The buzzer went off at 8:30.  And I got out of bed by 8:40.  And I was downstairs doing my lunges and leg lifts and crunches by 9:00!  Whew!

Oh, and I slept rather well last night.  Surprisingly well considering how quasi-restless my sleep has been the past couple of days.

I've had my breakfast, read my paper, gone over the sale ads for tomorrow - love that "plastic pack", and folded my laundry.  WOW!  All of this BEFORE 11:00 - that's saying something.  For me, at least.

So... I want to run a few errands before the show, so...  And I'm still on the fence about the new digital camera, so... There is a store that has a few in stock, but it's a little out of the way, so... But... Ah, well...

Where was I?

Oh, I know...

James Cagney: "Yankee Doodle Dandy"

Edward G.Robinson: "Soylent Green"

Humphrey Bogart: "Casablanca"

*I have to say my choices are limited by limited viewings of the films of these fine thespians.  Sort of.  I've also just seen these films multiple times.

In about twenty minutes, I'll be off to my Chinese buffet. Yes, I go early to avoid lunch crowds, and I usually have the buffets mostly to myself.

In line with today being pie day, I'll have to eat one of their cream puffs. Not pie exactly, but it's as close as I'll come today to having pie.

It's been said before, and I'm certain it will be said again, that CAGNEY's performance in ONE, TWO, THREE is a sure thing when it comes to favorites.  That said, I also truly think his performance in RAGTIME is great.  After that, it's WHITE HEAT all the way.

BOGART:  CASABLANCA.  THE BAREFOOT CONTESSA.

ROBINSON: SOYLENT GREEN.  BULLETS OR BALLOTS.

Good morning, all!

Speaking of Ohio, my sister lives there in the girlhood home of Marie Dressler. A fact which impresses me far more than my sister and her family!

Cagney: WHITE HEAT is unbelievable. But TORRID ZONE takes the cake (or pie). Good luck waiting for TCM to show it.

Bogie: I'll go with DEAD END for one reason. The scene where Bogie runs into his mom and she just rips him apart. Might be his best scene ever!

Edward G: Yes, td, BULLETS OR BALLOTS. Just pure goodness. And he gets to slap Bogie around a bit.

Three of my favorite actors to discuss and I must rush off to make cheese enchiladas.

Okay quickly, gosh this is hard, they were so great in everything.

Bogart: AFRICAN QUEEN, CASABLANCA.  I will force myself to stop there.

Edward G:  KEY LARGO and everything else.

Cagney:  YANKEE DOODLE DANDY.

What I find interesting in scanning the showstoppers website is the descriptors that are slugged under some of these names like Fredd Wayne:  Best known as "Ben Franklin" in the classic BEWITCHED episode.  "Best known as"?...one lousy episode?  Now there is a tenuous fame; a dubious celebrity...When you can only be identified as "Best known as" from one episode of a forty-year-old TV show, I suspect you will not be selling a lot of autographs.
Title: Re:PIE DAY

Keith’s list:

Bogart-CASABLANCA, AFRICAN QUEEN-same as mine only the order is reversed.

Edward G-LITTLE CEASAR, BROTHER ORCHID, Oh yes, I forgot about Brother, add it to my list.

Cagney-ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES, ONE TWO THREE, MISTER ROBERTS. Angels and Roberts, two more wonderful films I should have included.

I also found that funny. Just did a little Fredd Wayne recon. He played Ben Franklin on TWO episodes of "Bewitched" and was Ben Franklin in some America-themed movie just a few years ago. Otherwise a lot of little character parts. Will he dress as BF at the event?
Title: Re:PIE DAY
Post by: Charles Pogue on February 05, 2005, 09:53:59 AM
It became de rigeur to pick up after your mutt when you couldn't walk down the street or play in your yard without stepping in something.  Unless you live in the wilderness, it is what the conscientious pet owner does.  Dog crap fouling the highways and byways is also just a health hazard and none to aromatic on the nostrils on a hot day...particularly in the valley where you live.  That's why I told Julieanne before we got Tewkes, I wanted a small dog...less food to buy, less food consumed, less poop to pick up.  Small dog, small poop!

I went up to Horton at the show and told him how much I admired 110 IN THE SHADE and that it was one of my favourite musicals.   It was like he could've cared less...sort of "if you're not going buy my John Hancock on my  8X10 glossy, bub, push off."

There was also not a big crowd around him.  Maybe he was disgruntled that he wasn't getting the attention he felt he deserved.  I think my pal Pat got somewhat the same vibe off him when he went up to him, extolling Wagon Train.

A fun game would be, you get the list of all the entertainers, then prior to the event, you have to guess whether their demeanor will be generally positive, generally negative or neutral. Whoever guesses the most right wins.

I just had to pop in an say that "Pie Day" is an excellent kind of day to have.  I haven't had pie since Christmas (and it wasn't too good) and I for one am ready to partake!  Cherry, blueberry, coconut cream and pecan are my favorites. ;D

Now, I have to take a shower, shave and get my clothes ready (I had to supply my own costume) for the Barbershop show today.  The costume was just a couple of different shirts, black pants and black shoes.  I'll be gone all day (we have two shows and only a couple of hours for a break) but I'll make sure that I have pie somewhere. :D

As for the Topic of the Day:

Cagney:  Yankee Doodle Dandy and Mr. Roberts

Bogart:  Casablanca and The African Queen

Robinson:  umm...Never a Dull Moment ::)

Rodzinski, it wouldn't surprise me if he dressed in his "best known as" part so that he'd be "best known" at the event.  It might help conjure up a misty memory for someone, "Oh...yeah...uh...yeah...a...you're that...guy..."

Sometimes you get some pretty sad cases.  There are a couple of guys who come dressed in their full cowboy regalia, no one knows who they are (Z cowboys from B westerns, I guess), but you could shoot rabbits with buckshot in front of them and not hit anyone, so sparse is their little corner of the show.  You just sort of pass by them and try to avoid eye contact.  Because even if you stopped, you'd have nothing to say to them..."Hi, I don't remember you.  I never saw anything you were in that I remember.  Who are you?  Why are you here?  Does your mother know you're out, Cecila?"

However, sometimes you spot someone truly interesting who has no one around them.  I found Britt Lomond this way.  He is the guy who played the evil commandant on the Disney Zorro TV series and was really an engaging fellow and nice man.  And as I recall, was in real life an very good fencer.  I bought and had him autographed a great picture of him crossing blades with Guy Williams.

And speaking of Guy Williams, this can tell you something of the absurdity levels to which these shows can descend.  Guy Williams, Jr. frequently appears at these shows with dad's cape and hat and sword but as far as any of us have been able to determine no discernable talent or justifiable fame of his own.  He is merely Guy Williams' son.  I don't know whether he signs his dad's pictures or what.  It baffles my ken of understanding.

Gene Barry was the only grumpy celeb I came across at my trips to the Court's shows...everyone else that I have visited were very kind and seemed to be having lots of fun...of course I was buying autographs from all of them, so that might have been why they were smiling! LOL!
Title: Re:PIE DAY

Rodzinski, interesting idea for a game...but then you'd have to go up to them and actually talk to them.

What's interesting often for BK and me and my pal Pat, who I always go with, is to see how many of them we actually know or have worked with.  I've worked with Rose Marie.  BK can usually win this one hands down.  I think he's worked with everybody...Happy Days, Partridge Family, The Young Lawyers, etc....

The other thing is how many of the people who are trawling the booths like us do we know...This is a small world (sometimes a scary one) and you meet all kinds of collectors and authors there.  Sometimes Rudy Behlmer.  Sometimes Bob Osborne. We can always expect to bump into the ubiquitious Myles Kreuger...author, scholar, collector, and bon vivant.

I recently dug out a cassette recording that someone made for me from ALW's first attempt at "Jeeves" - as we all know, the first attempt did not fare well (not that the second "By Jeeves" was a winner also, but ran longer) It's a rather interesting recording. Of course, we've heard all these songs before in some form or another!!!

I'm going to take the time in the next week to put this cassette onto CD.  If any DR would like a copy (as it is very rare!) please drop me a line.  I love to share my collection!!!

DRPogue, if you run into Miles, tell him hello for me!  I didn't think he ever went out.

My one Gene Barry story froma director friend of mine.  Barry kept resisting a piece of direction in rehearsal.  The director cut and said, "Gene, come even further downstage left for that."  Barry replied, "Do I have to, Dick?  It's so cold and lonely down here."

LOL-great story.

Bought the soundtrack to LOVE ACTUALLY and DE-LOVELY at Best Buy - I know the film was soundly panned, but it may be better on the small screen.

Edward G. Robinson - Our Vines Have Tender Grapes, The Stranger, Little Caesar

Humphrey Bogart - Casablanca, African Queen,  Dead Reckoning

These are favorites and I just chose three for each....otherwise of course The Ten Commandments for EGR, Love Me or Leave Me and Never Steal Anything Small for JC, and The Barefoot Contessa and We're No Angels for  HB.

Larry Clinton, yes!

Okay, Elmore is right. Pie ain't easy to come by here in NYC. Leastways, not on the upper west side. Especially as upper as I am. I go out to the only decent diner up here and ate and then they say they have no pies, just cheesecakes and other cakes. So we go walking and see a place labelled BAKERY. But it is a Dominican place and the employee didn't understand what "pie" was, so she called her co-worker who said, "Apple Pie?" And I said, sure. So she grabbed this wedge-like thing. A flaky pastry wedge with apple-y material within. Kind of like a giant strudel. Only a dollar for it. And you had to eat a lot of the pastry to get to the filling. Not bad, but it just didn't feel like pie to me. Does it count as pie if the employee sold it to me as pie??

DE-LOVELY is so bad that even shrinking it for the relatively small TV screen didn't help it. It's just bad - bad conception, bad execution. Speaking of execution, that's what Irving Winkler deserves for thinking he was doing anyone any favors with this monstrosity.

Now, Jane, it wasn't a big mistake.  I do hope you come back later with details of the meal - especially the corn bread.

I HATED every single second of De Lovely.  Irwin Winkler was a fine producer (with his partner Robert Chartoff).  He is living proof that good producers usually make awful directors.

Speaking of MONK, Faith Prince was the guest star on last night's episode. Completely devoid of glamor and made frumpy beyond belief, she was almost unrecognizable, and I did a double take once I spotted her.

The show itself was really lame this week, a really weak double plot that a five year old could see through. Plotting has never been a strong suit with MONK anyway, but I found this one especially lacking.

I was so disappointed in MATRIX RELOADED that I never bothered with this, but I have to admit I'm a bit curious to see how things wrap up. The HD version might be worth checking out, at least for a few minutes. I can always flip off it if it's as tedious as the second one.

Well, I'm back from Barnes & Noble, and I stopped at Artie's.  I was thinking of rice pudding but I bought a slice of pecan pie, which I shall try later.  Artie's cakes look delicious but they're not too tasty.  Their rice pudding is a chunk of heaven, however.  We'll see how the pecan pie goes.  I'll judge it for crust, quality of the custard filling and the quantity of pecans.

Success, finally!  Well it's been a frustrating 24 hours.  My internet service, ATT Worldnet, has been getting steadly worse over the last few months...bad connections, refusing to load pages, just horribly frustrating.

I decided last night it was time to swtich providers.  First I signed up with Netscape, but being the world class dummy I am, I neglected to first make sure they were mac compatible.  Those of you familiar with standard comedy situations have already deduced that that Netscape is indeed non-mac compatible.  *smacks hand to forehead*

So I tried for NetZero, because I've heard good things about it.  Only to find out a few minutes later that I could have gotten a better deal from Juno.  Through all of this, pages refused to load, it would often take 5 minutes just to get one step done.  At this point it was 4 am, and I was ready to throw the computer out the window.  I decided it was best to try again in the morning after I'd calmed down.

So this morning I did...or I tried.  Pages still weren't loading.  Fed up with it all, I threw my computer in it's case and took it to Starbucks where the glory of the HotSpot airporter connection was a soothing balm to my frazzled nerves.  I was able to cancel my ATT service, find out that NetZero really is a good deal, download the software, and install it...and now I'm home, so far so good on NetZero, and I'm celebrating with some grape juice.  Perhaps later I will celebrate with some pie...

Zeus is gone.

For those of you who haven't been keeping track (or score), Zeus is the Shetland Sheepdog that der Brucer and I have been taking fostering for the past six months.  Over that time, we've had several nibbles by people interested in adopting him, but nothing more.

This week, der B was contacted by a woman living in Salisbury, MD.  She and her teenaged sons were interested in Zeus, who they had found on the Internet.

Today, we drove down and met the family, with Zeus with us.  Talk about a loving group; the boys immediately took to the dog, and vice versa.  The boys are both old enough that they don't need a puppy, and Mom needs a companion more than someone to raise at this point.  So, we signed the paperwork, and Zeus now has a new home.

Right now, I'm feeling a contented sort of sad.

Woody & Der Brucer, sorry for your loss, but glad that Zeus went to home that met with your approval.

I confess it.  I miss MUSAK.  More.  I long for MUSAK.  Something unobstrusive, innocuous, soothing, with the occasional tune you could unconsciously whistle along with.  I just got back from the grocery store where I was assaulted by the sound system with its really irritating so-called rock screeched by pitchy anemic voices with all the panache of a beauty contestant trill.  I can understand it if a store caters to an 18 to 30 market of the "hip", "trendy" and undiscriminating, but by and large the folks who buy groceries are middle-aged geezers like me.  I don't remember them playing my rock and roll at the store when my parents went grocery shopping....or almost anywhere else for that matter.  When did we Baby Boomers...the largest population out there...abdicate our power to our children?  We should have remained in control until we started to die off.

elmore the Elizabeth/Darcy mysteries sound like a clever idea.  Howcum I never have an idea like this?  Co-opt someone else's public domain characters for my own profit and gain...

I'm very much a fan of historical mysteries.   There's a group of Elizabethan mysteries that revolve around the prompter in a theatre, Nicholas Bracewell, by Edward Marston and a series of Roman ones feature a character named Marcus Didius by Lindsey Davis that are fun.  I recently started a series about a Bow Street Runner solving crimes and another that features an actual historical personage, John Fielding, the blind beak of Bow Street.  And, of course, there is the great Toby Peters, the  30-40's detective who mixes it up with real Hollywood stars, by Stuart Kaminsky.

I'm not feeling bad about Zeus being gone.  We gave him the best home we could, knowing that ours was just temporary for him.

One thing we have learned because of Zeus, is that two humans cannot give the attention needed by six dogs.  Five seems to be the limit.

We've also learned that some of the people associated with Animal Rescue organizations are just plain bonkers.  Yes, there are a few people out there who want dogs as training material for their pit bulls or whatever, but those sadists are the exception, not the rule.  Unfortunately, some of the AR people are so wrapped up in their fear of the sadists that they cannot see the good people out there for who they are.  As a result, animals don't get placed, and instead end up being fostered by people who take in too many pets and cannot give the animals the attention they need.

My be is that der B will be screamed at by certain parties, because he decided this was the right home for Zeus on the basis of one home visit.  That's all right, we've kept the ten-minute scream from one of the ARs that was left on our answering machine, simply because he suggested they were being too cautious.  One of these days, I'm going to transcribe that thing, just for the fun of it.

elmore the Elizabeth/Darcy mysteries sound like a clever idea.

DRPogue, I've read most of the Sir John Fielding mysteries.  I liked them, but occasionally the author would turn a phrase and I would think "that's not 18th Century!"  Sme of his plots were a lot of fun.  I read them in order as the narrrator aged, but I haven't read the latest.  I liked the Gordianus Roman mysteries by Steven Saylor quite a lot as well.  Maybe I'll go buy the Darcy-Elizabeth mystery and see what it's like.

I forgot to mention the pie!  The only good dessert at Artie's is the rice pudding.  The pecan pie was coarse in texture, some awful prefab crust that may be cardboard, and a real disappointment.  Damn them all to hell, I want a good bakery on the Upper West Side with a flare for light, flaky tasty crust, and an appreciation for the other components of a pastry!

And now to the movies . . .

Boy, that cake sure was good. But now I am once more trying to do this assignment. I need to comment on the first half of this book we're supposed to read. I read the book over winter break before classes even started so that I wouldn't have to do it now. I remember the second half just fine, but not the first half. I guess I'll have to go back and read the first half again. I think I wasted my winter break.

Well, the first of the two performances of the Barbershop show didn't go off without a hitch. :-\ I flubbed one of my lines. ::) Damn, I hate it when that happens.  Actually, it wasn't too bad.  I just forgot to say part of a line and I'm sure that the audience couldn't tell.  Otherwise, it was a cute show...if you like barbershop singing.  I used to be part of the men's group, about 20 years ago, but it's just not what I'm interested in performing.  It was fun and the people in the groups are all very nice.

Now, there is only one more show.  I don't have to be back until 6:00 but I didn't get a chance to go anywhere to get pie.  I'll have to go somewhere tonight after the second show.  But I will have pie! ;D

I failed to have pie. I went to the grocery store to buy some bologna for lunch, and look at the pies. They only had one "no sugar added" pie and it was apple. I really wanted cherry. The apple pie, even though no sugar was added, still had huge amounts of sugar and carbs and my blood sugar simply told me to not go there....so I run to the meat department to pick out some sandwich stuff and then I suddenly realize...hey, I put two hot dogs on the stove to boil...and they are still there...boiling! So I flew home as fast as I could and found the weiners nearly cooked to death on the stove! I had totally forgotten that I had decided to have hot dogs for lunch!! LOL!

That is my pie story!

Rodzinski, I like the idea.  I really am just so tired of noise pollution everywhere you go...not just music...These days it's impossible to escape from it.  I don't want to hear either the intimate or the mundane details of people's lives as they as they yammer away on their cell phones in a supposedly private conversation.  I don't want to hear them ringing with their vast array of musical or comical beeps.  I don't want to hear people yakking in a movie theatre to each other or munching their popcorn.  I don't want to hear the roar of cars or power tools or tvs or talk radio...or any of a hundred appliances or whirring, whirling, whizzing gizmos.

I think we're all suffering from some bit form of hearing loss.  I can leave the house when I'm watching TV to go take the dog for a walk and I come back and I hear the thing blaring outside the house.  It's not that The Lovely Wife has turned it up, it's just that we have cranked it up that loud to hear it.

Of course, it doesn't help that all commercials are ramped up to a higher decibel level than the actual program you're watching.  When someone invents an automatic leveller for the TV, where everything conforms to the same sound level you set it at , I will kiss the ground they walk on.  I hate having a program on at a certain setting and the commercial comes on and blows you across the room, making you bleed from the ears.

My dream is to someday have an actual library/office that is soundproofed to the all the noise from the rest of the house.  A sanctuary where I close the door and I don't hear a sound...no TV, no piano, no footsteps, no pots and pans rattling or water running.  The only noise will be the turning of the page in my book, the crackling of a cozy fire in the fireplace, and maybe some soft, inobstrusive music of my own choice.

I've taken to sleeping with earplugs almost nightly these days.

Seems like every town used to have a radio station that played only Muzak-style stuff. I guess these got replaced by "LITE FM" type stations.

Whilst in San Jose once, I found a Muzak demonstration record from the late 60's. The music is far more colorful than just the violins used to connote "Muzak" in films and commercials today.

But the funniest is the psycho-babble on the record sleeve: "Today, as specialists in the psychological and physiological aspects of music, MUZAK is concerned with developments in vigilance and human factors research, automobile driver safety, medical and dental studies, noise control, the influence of color and music on emotions and, of course, the effects of scientifically planned music on work productivity and efficiency."

Title: Re:PIE DAY
Post by: Charles Pogue on February 05, 2005, 06:07:51 PM
Rodzinski, I think the psycho-babble may actually have point.  I think some of that explosive music with a persistent pounding, repetitive, throbbing rhythm beat makes people tense, stressed, and aggressive.  It calls attention to itself, distracting you from the experience you're having shopping, driving, or whatever.  You are unable to ignore it.  It's in your face, colouring your mood.  Musak may have done the same by sedating you...but better that than the other...

Oh, no doubt, Charles Pogue. The thing that's funny to me is not the concept, but the unabashed and guileless belief in it. It reads rather Orwellian now.

"Unllike ordinary music or so-called background music, MUZAK is a non-entertainment medium, employing rhythm, tempo, instrumentation, etc. to scientifically-determined specifications. Different types of arrangements and selections are planned for different times of the day to achieve predetermined effects."

The LOUDER COMMERCIALS phenomenon is indeed a real annoyance. It takes volume control out of your hands. I also despise the insistent little logos and screen crawls during television programming. I mean, if you paid for a certain size TV screen, that's what you should get!

I see the SAG awards are on.  The envelope containing with my ballot and voting materials remains sealed on my desk.  Just as well.  I saw so few movies and even less Television, I have no business voting.  I've used my SAG card very little in the 32 years I've had it.

I got both it and my AFTRA card in Dallas when you could just walk right into the local office and buy it outright.  I think for both cost either $75 or $100 dollars.  They had this deal simply because at the time there was so much production going on in Texas. I think they were trying to unionize the acting work force (Texas was...and I assume still is..right to work).

But I mainly bought them because I knew that if I got hired for a gig in an Equity theatre, they would automatically have to make me Equity...because of some reciprocal rule between sister unions.  That's what happened and, most of my acting career was done in Equity, not SAG or AFTRA.  Almost all of it, except for the most minor of roles and some commercials and voice-over work.

But though I haven't work on any of those cards for years, I've not taken honourable withdrawal in any of them.  I pay my dues and keep them all up to date.

Rodzinski, they way they blatantly shill you on TV and the time now allotted for the assault of commercials is why I watch so little of it anymore.  I can't remember the last time I watched the Big Three (or is it Four with Fox?) Networks anymore.  My TV is largely tuned to TCM, Fox Movie Channel, HGTV, and the Westerns Channel.  It's so much easier to just wait a year, get a complete season on DVD, and watch it that way. Saves time and annoying interruptions.  I watched FAST EDDIE that way, because even though I was willing to put up with annoyance when it originally ran, I could never remember when it aired.

In other news I just finished watching PAGAN ISLAND (1960), another made-in-Florida film...no nude sunbathers this time, just a man shipwrecked on an island populated by pretty, young, topless (with flowered leis sometimes covering their chestical area) native gals who fear a giant clam-like sea God...

DR Pogue said:

I, too, keep my cards up to date, even though I have been "out of the business" for 13 years. I also bought my AFTRA card in Minnesota, got my Equity card with an Equity contract and then bought my SAG card. It was such an important occasion to me to get my Equity card, having wanted it since I was a 14-year old local actor in the Minneapolis area, that the idea of going on withdrawal was out of the question. I can afford the twice yearly dues and I also get the perk of free or reduced tickets (when available) for Broadway and Off-Broadway shows with my paid-up Equity card. I also get into all showcase productions, if seats are available, for free. The $59 every six months has more than paid for itself over the years.

elmore, I too am a fan of the Steven Saylor Roman mysteries.

Well, I enjoyed HIDE AND SEEK a lot!  I'm a perennial patsy, never see a thing coming, and the movie offered some good chills, a beautiful Amy Irving, a bit of a rollercoaster ride, and a couple of genuine shocks.  There's a certain debt to Kubrick's THE SHINING, but I thought it was a lot of fun.  And there's a great, right out of THE BAD SEED (play and novel) finish.

DR Elmore, while it's true that Hitchcock's PSYCHO and THE BIRDS did not get great receptions from critics at the time, I don't think they're out to get horror movies and thrillers automatically now. THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE SIXTH SENSE, and THE OTHERS, among other films of the last 15 years or so, have gotten outstanding reviews and garnered major awards.

Critics at the time didn't like PSYCHO because they had never seen anything like it and like all grandbreaking masterworks, it baffled the critical establishment. I think you'd be hard pressed to find any worthwhile critics now who don't respect it. Horror films that are well done are now seen to be just as legitimate works of film art as any other genre.

I just think in the case of HIDE AND SEEK, critics called a dog a dog.

But I amend these comments immediately with the realization that I have not seen the film in question. I was going merely on the ten or so reviews I read. I'm very glad you found it enjoyable.

Garner is one of those people, watchable in anything, and yet with that going for him, he still managed to choose generally good material. Question: Did he ever stretch himself in a role? I'm trying to think of a time he played a lout or a tortured soul. Nothing comes to mind.

Rodzinski, Garner's Wyatt Earp in HOUR OF THE GUN is, if memory serves, a rather nuanced performance of a driven man going too far.  Haven't seen it in years, so I don't know if it still holds up.

Still I'll always love him for Americanization of Emily; The Great Escape; and Support Your Local Gunfighter...if nothing else.  He was also right about Nichols being a wonderful show.

I'm back.  I wish I could say I agree with elmore, but I just thought Hide and Seek was awful.  I do like watching De Niro and I like the little girl, but I get so tired of these "fake" scares and red herrings, although you could see every fake scare coming for at least a minute before it happened.  It was all done competently, except for the script, which just made no sense to me in the grand scheme of things.  However, we had a surprise second feature - he ran a pristine 35mm print of Double Indemnity.  Pogue and I had been discussing it the other day, and it was great to see it again.

EFFLUVIA!

I am currently watching a bizarre Robert Forster movie from 1970 on Fox Movie Channel. Extreme low budget and soft focus. Sondra Locke and Sam Waterston are also in it. Called "Cover Me Babe". Forster's character is essentially inventing "reality" cinema ahead of its time.

Holy moley on rye - page eight!  That calls for PIE.  Everyone must be off eating their collective pies because they certainly aren't here.  So, who won the SAG awards - the usual suspects?

Great story, Mbarnum!  I'm glad nothing bad happened to the kitchen...

oh yeah!  So there Mr. BK.  Here I am.  I went to IKEA with my friends and bought 2 chairs.  Then my friend lost her husbands wallot.  What an exciting day I had today.  Natalie read the first Benjamin Kritzer book and LOVED it.  She is going to read the other one today.  Good night all.

Pogue, this is a guy in Burbank who I've known for years.  He has an office on Hollywood Way and in said office is a screening room.  He has screenings on many Saturday nights and I go occasionally if he remembers to invite me.

I hope bdapp has learned to use her "refresh" button at the top of her screen, so she can see new posts.

bdapp, I shall pass on your regards to The Lovely Wife.  I'm sure she'll be delighted to know you've taken the plunge.  She did herself only a couple of weeks ago.

And like MacBeth's witches, I must ask "When shall we three (Okay, four) meet again?  In thunder, lightning, or in rain (didn't we just go through all that out here?)?  When the hurly-burly's done (Is it ever?), When the battle's lost and won (Huh? Don't even go there).  That will be ere the set of sun, (can't make that, have my girl call your girl.)  Where the place?  (someplace with plenty of parking)  Upon the heath (no, no alfresco dining) , there to meet MacBeth (I thought we'd just meet BK...or is MacBeth the restaurant?...Anything like Musso's?  Not too trendy, I hope).

Switch to something that doesn't start with the letter "A".

Robert Forster movie ludicrously ended. You gotta hand it to Fox Movie Channel. There is no rhyme or reason to their movie schedule. This raunchy 1970 head trip was followed by Anna and the King of Siam.

I feel pie day was an international success.

Good Evening/Morning!

I'm here.  I'm here.  I just transferred all my "work files" from my old laptop to my new laptop.  It actually didn't take that long at all since there really wasn't that much to transfer.

-It was sort of depressing actually realizing that all my Word, Encore, pictures, etc., only amount(ed) to about 200MB of stuff.  However, that made the transfer of the info quite easy.  I simply saved everything to the pocket drive, then stuck that into my new laptop, and transferred it all onto the new hard drive.  I even burned a few CDs as backups.

In the meantime, I started looking up Mac equivalents for some of my software... More stuff to add to the "Wish List".  However, there are only two programs I need to buy, so...

OK - Lemme get back to reading the posts from today... If I don't make it back until "tomorrow"...

Laters...

Now, there is only one more show.  I don't have to be back until 6:00 but I didn't get a chance to go anywhere to get pie.  I'll have to go somewhere tonight after the second show.  But I will have pie! ;D

The show is over and I had pie! ;D The second performance was much better all around.  I did not make a mistake anywhere (whew!) and the audience really liked all the barbershop singing.  Anyway, after the show, I took off on my own and went to the local Shari's.  I had the country skillet (cut-up chicken fried steak on top of potatoes, onions and peppers, covered in country gravy and eggs).  M-M-Good!  And Shari's must have known that today was Pie Day at HHW, because it's actually Pie Month there!  Any pie is $5.99!  If you want just one slice, it can be $2.99, but the whole pie (six pieces) is $5.99!  So I had to buy the whole pie.  I actually had them cut me a half-sized piece to eat at the restaurant and took the rest home.  It shall be consumed over the next few days. ;D

Easiest place to get them (hardcover or softcover) is amazon.com.  Just search my name under books - the three titles are Benjamin Kritzer, Kritzerland, and Kritzer Time.  If you want signed hardcovers, which come with a limited edition CD of songs featured in the book sung by our very own Guy Haines, then go to our main page where the notes are featured.  On the left you will see several icons and just click on Kritzer Novels.  That will take you to a new page and just look over to your right and you'll see a menu bar - all three books are there and available.

I didn't have pie today...  But I did have a very good empanada at lunch today - as well as a wonderful tamale.  The empanada was filled with the usual ground beef and vegetables, but the tamale was a little unusual in that it was wrapped in banana leaves and it was filled with chicken, olive and potatoes.  Quite tasty!  And only $1.00!

I shall cleverly ask for them as a Valentine's gift from the Gal. I think she was already going to get me Penn & Teller's show which I asked for even prior to hearing of any BK involvement. With luck, I'll get all of the above. In any case, the books will be mine.

...And I would have had pie for dessert tonight after dinner (between shows), but they did not have any pie on the dessert menu.  So instead, I "settled" for their totally decadent Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding which is served with a Warm Rum Sauce and Bananas.

...Guess who's working out in the morning?!?!?
