Title: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both sunny and rainy, and now it is time for you to post until the sunny, rainy cows come home.

Today, I need to go to the rehearsal space for The Rocky Horror Show and look at some things that the stage manager is bringing to be used as props...paper box lids to be used as trays.  After that, I'm going to my sister's house for our family's weekly family dinner.  We're having baked potatoes and I'm bringing a couple of different kinds of cheeses and something else that I forget right now.  It's all downstairs.  After dinner and game playing, I need to do a little prop shopping for TRHS, then I'll go home.  And that's my day. :)

Now, as I have said, I really really want a calico. We have had many kinds of kitties over the years, but I have never had a calico, and I really want one some day.

I want a uniquely-marked cat. I even saved a name through all the fostering we have done: Betsy.
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT
Post by: Laura on October 13, 2018, 06:02:31 AM
I am going to take my time and choose exactly the kitty I want. My requirements are: female, calico, short-haired, and very loud purr.
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT
Post by: Laura on October 13, 2018, 06:04:08 AM
So, last night, after feeding the Night Cats (ferals) that live in the backyard, I heard growling, which is very unusual. I often seen the Night Cats cuddling together or grooming each other.

That was a stupid question, wasn't it?
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT
Post by: Laura on October 13, 2018, 06:09:35 AM
I see a new kitty, being growled at by Queenie. The new cat is eating all the food. (Queenie is so named because he is all black, and Queenie is the best role in Show Boat. We didn't know until after we caught him in a trap and took him to be fixed that he was a boy. The name stuck, anyway.)
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT
Post by: Laura on October 13, 2018, 06:10:30 AM
The new kitty is very small, and begins meowing like crazy. the meow tells me it is tame; cats don't usually meow to each other, they meow at people.
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT

So, I make attempts to catch it, and it runs every time. But comes back, because it is SO hungry.

Post by: Laura on October 13, 2018, 06:12:45 AM
So, I sit outside with a feather wand, and it comes near. Finally it comes close enough, and I can touch it. It rubs against my hand. And purrs.

I fed the cats and went back to bed for two hours.  I had only one dream I remember:  I was working at The Drama Book Shop and Luciano Pavarotti came in, looking for a copy of Congreve's The Way of the World.  I guess it was the absurdity of Pavarotti and his heavy Italian accent acting Restoration English dialogue that made me remember it.

I have been trying to get a photo, but kitty won't get far enough away from the camera. It is all over me, like Annabelle on Elmore.
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT
Post by: elmore3003 on October 13, 2018, 06:26:27 AM
The cats seem quite normal today: the apartment is a mess from their romping, and they seem happy to gave their own cartons.  Annabelle prefers these shallow cartons that hold 24 cans of Fancy Feast, and Thatch has turned his Amazon carton on its side, so he can lounge inside it and look out on his domain.

Will you call him Lenny? like his Bernstein namesake?

When I was looking for a brother for Annabelle, my two choices were a creamsicle or a tuxedo.  This morning one of the cat rescue agencies was looking for someone to foster this baby, 4-week-old Emma (my paternal grandmother's name).  I almost said yes, so I'd get my tuxedo, but I'm terrified to being another cat into our lives without knowing its FELV/FIV status, and I'm not making enough at the moment to support another.

Someone must be missing this kitten. He is so loving. He is intact, so I don't think he was adopted from a shelter; they alter them before adoption.
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT

I hope he is chipped. I just keep thinking a little girl cried all night because her kitten is missing.
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT
Post by: ChasSmith on October 13, 2018, 06:40:13 AM
If he's only around three months, that's too young to have been altered.

Not here; the shelters do it at 2 pounds. A private vet would wait.

Nope.  Thatch was three months old when I adopted him, and he was neutered about 3-5 days before I picked him up.
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT
Post by: Laura on October 13, 2018, 06:45:41 AM
It is best to wait until about 6 months, but the shelters discovered that people often don't return to get them fixed. So they started doing it before adoption.

So, DR Laura, when will you have him checked out for chip, etc.?

I remember Poe having to wait till about six months. Finally, we were in there for something or other and the doc took a look and said, "Yep, he's got a nice package. It's time!"
Title: Re: THE SUNNY DAY, THE RAINY NIGHT

I hope he is chipped. I just keep thinking a little girl cried all night because her kitten is missing.

From my observations of the animals to be euthanized by the MACC, a great many of the asses who bring pets into the shelters deserve to be euthanized for their treatment of them.  Dogs are used for breeding or fighting, and then dumped when they're worn out; they are not toilet trained or treated them well and then dumped for unsocial behavior.  Cats get old and they;re traded in callously for younger cats.  If I ever win the lottery, I'm spending a lot of it on animal rescue.

I don't think you should worry about Lenny's background.  If he's not microchipped, do it and claim him for your own.  His life before last night might have been hell and not some little girl's treasure.

Sneaking a TOD in here:

Columbia. I got used to them because we were in the record club and I was getting a pretty good taste of their popular (Mitch Miller, Andy Williams), Broadway (South Pacific, Kismet, West Side Story), and classical (Bernstein conducting this 'n that - including, of course, WSS Symphonic Dances).

When I joined the RCA club myself to broaden my choices, I certainly liked all the music and the performances I was getting, but I never quite got the warm and fuzzies from the sound quality like I continued to get with Columbia. I was particularly thrilled with the Earl Wild/Fiedler "Concerto in F" album, no question about that.

Finally, I got to know London Records through the D'Oyly Carte stereo recordings from the late 50s and early 60s. I thought those were the Cadillac of record albums and lush sound. The only other one I had then was Sutherland's "Lucia" because that had just become a phenomenon.

So, with those qualifications, Columbia wins the TOD.

Even in my later record collecting years, I never got around to acquiring any Lyrita. Have to check a few out one of these days.

The "6-eye" red label remains one of the most handsome of all record labels. The "360 Sound" one that followed ain't shabby, but its predecessor is perfect in every way.

And as to Columbia classical, I should have included Ormandy. I'm thinking the likes of "Finlandia" and "Grand Canyon" back then, with the eventual grand prize being his "Carmina Burana".

Too many people don't understand the importance of chipping.  I had a woman tell me of her morning adventure capturing her dogs that had escaped.  When I asked if they were chipped she said it was unnecessary and did not appreciate my efforts to convince her to do it so I stopped.

Ormandy and Bernstein were Columbia's fair-haired classical conductors, but I preferred Ormandy, and I learned a lot of pieces from Ormandy's pops compilations.  That "Carmina Burana" is still one of my absolute faves.

Ormandy's right up there on my list with Fiedler, Reiner, Munch, and Monteux.

I am not sure all adoptions require a chip.  I hope so.  I know many good dog breeders who require it, sometimes the contract says the new family does it and others put them in first.  Of course just because something is in a contract doesn't mean it will be done.

What he said.

I also loved Angel recordings for Gilbert & Sullivan and Maria Callas.

Right.

And as to Columbia classical, I should have included Ormandy. I'm thinking the likes of "Finlandia" and "Grand Canyon" back then, with the eventual grand prize being his "Carmina Burana".

I was also crazy about his "Messiah" album for a time. I'm afraid I don't remember anything about it now, but I believe I really liked the soloists, and that I might possibly have heard one of them sing it live.

The vet opens in a half hour.  I really hope we find his owner. He belongs to someone. He is so friendly and loving.

You don't know if that little baby was deliberately abandoned.  He clearly needs affection and protection.  Just don't get too sentimental about his being a little girl's lost kitty and let that cloud your judgment.  I think his coming to you was his selecting you to be his mama.

I am not sure all adoptions require a chip.  I hope so.  I know many good dog breeders who require it, sometimes the contract says the new family does it and others put them in first.  Of course just because something is in a contract doesn't mean it will be done.

All rescued animals and their agencies in Manhattan and environs claim to require it.  Thatch was not because the lady who runs his adoption agency was having health problems and didn't get to it before he was turned over to me.   When he was at the vet for his heart murmur in January, I had it done.

You want them turned into a kill shelter instead where, if they're not chipped, they either are put up for adoption or euthanized?  You have no idea if "the people missing them" really do.   Most are abandoned with the excuses of:
1. too many pets already
2. my landlord won't let me keep it
3. allergies
4. new baby

They never say:
1.  I'm dumping my girl (boy) friend's/husband's/wife's/child's animal to punish them
2.  It's too old and gonna die soon and I want a new pretty young model
3.  My unspayed animal - because I'm irresponsible - had a litter and nobody wanted to take any so I'm dumping them
4.  School's out and since i'm leaving town,  I'll just leave my pet on the streets to forage; it will survive
5.  I only used this animal for fighting or a breeding factory and now that it's worn out, I'm getting rid of it
6.  We don't want this animal when we move, so we'll leave it here
All six of these examples are pet owners who should be euthanized instead of their pet.

Chip it or be sure there's a collar with ID.  Granted, some collars get lost, but I honestly doubt many strays are missing animals.  In a year of checking Craig's list almost daily, I've seen maybe 5-10 lost animal posts.

DR elmore, what DR Laura said.

I never said anything about turning the found pet into a shelter, something I have never done.  I did search for adds and lost pet info in various places, including at the shelters.

I know the heartbreak of not finding a missing pet :(

I've been to market for a kitty treat.  When I got off the bus at my stop, Des and his Uptown Cats (https://uptowncats.org) were having an adoption event in front of Barnes & Noble.  I almost adopted five-month-old Stinky. Des rescued him a month ago, and he, like little Mego, has been a major concern of mine.  He was in severe condition with a prolapsed rectum, which you can see in the photo.  Stinky went through several surgical procedures to repair it, and now he's fine.  He and a sister were among the cats at the event.

Des and I talked about adopting him, but I told him I really couldn't but I would think about it.
