Title: THE HARSH MISTRESS
Post by: bk on November 01, 2003, 12:34:41 AM
Well, if you've read today's notes you know what to do.

Also, be sure to check out what you missed yesterday - I posted some new paintings which are nice to look at.

I'll be checking in from work in a little while.

Btw, is it just me, or do today's notes appear in between Oct 30th and Oct 31st?

Btw2, is this the first time an east coaster got first post at 3:30am? :)

Wow, can't believe how many posts there were to catch up on. When I left for Halloween at 6pm, there was nothing. And then bam!

BK, speaking of Simon & Garfunkel, tonight (Saturday) my sister, her boyfriend and her daughter are going to Seattle to see Simon & Garfunkel in concert!  Just had to share.  I'll report later on my A/V selections.

Hope everyone had a safe and sane Halloween!

Last night after work, I didn't go home to my apartment until about 7:30 and then after that, only one person knocked.  I didn't answer because I didn't have any candy to give out.  I gave at the office (literally).  We had a finger-food potluck and costume contest.  I dressed as Charlie Brown (I have a C.B. shirt), but didn't win anything.  Good food, though.

Hey BK, I'm curious. What was the season finale for Alias season 1? (you can post spoilers in case anyone else is also watching this series on dvd). Also, what is the plot twist that you thought would happen? (I won't tell you if it does happen, unless you want me to). But you have me curious.

I don't think anyone answered Danise's question about posting smilies. I'll try to help.  Email me if you don't understand this.

For some reason you can't just copy and paste smilies here. But once you get the hang of it it's not hard.

We've been taking them from http://www.clicksmilies.com (http://www.clicksmilies.com)

Go there, and make sure the smilies are on "board" and not "email".  Choose a category. When you put your cursor on one, the link in the box will change. Just copy that link and put it in the "reply" box (not quick reply). It comes with image links and everything!  And presto you have smilies!

This one is cute!

(btw, you can preview it to make sure it stuck, but you should see image brackets around your link).

Btw2, halloween was fun. I'm trying to decide what my favorite costume was.  I always try to guess what the kids are wearing. One kid was wearing a light brown furry thing with ears. I said, "oh are you a rabbit?" The kid said "no I'm a kangeroo" and pointed to his pouch with a baby kangeroo.

That was not my fault. I didn't see the pouch or the baby! :)

The weather was amazing! I couldn't believe it. This must have been the warmest Halloween ever. I wasn't wearing a jacket. It must have been close to 60F.

And the enchiladas turned out great. Unfortuately I had to make 3 kinds (vegetarian, chicken, and beef). But everyone enjoyed them!

Happy Birthday, DR Mark!

Actually bk, ALIAS used that episode entitled Q&A to try to lure in new viewers who they thought would be too confused to jump right into the middle of the action. It allowed people who joined late to catch up since shows like ALIAS never repeat well (ratings wise). The ratings for ALIAS have never been very good, but I think they were honestly trying to recap for the benefit of latecomers, not save money by doing a greatest hits episode. '24,' another serialized drama like ALIAS, does not do a recycle show, but its unique premise of an hour in the life of the main character would pretty much prevent that anyway.

I also am not sure you're going to be able to predict too much about the season 2 cliffhanger because in the middle of season 2, the show does a major turnaround and heads off in a totally new direction, again done to gain more viewers and make the show less complicated. (This is the episode that was telecast after the Super Bowl gaining for ALIAS its largest audience ever.) Then, the show turns around yet again at the end of the second season. (I don't think these are major spoilers, but if they are, I'm sorry. I'm just taking up for the show a little bit.)

Media check:

CD - just finished AVENUE Q and have nothing else new on deck, so I'll probably pull out BRIGADOON with Brent Barrett and Rebecca Luker, the John McGlinn recording.

VHS - two episodes from ESPN's PLAYMAKERS soap opera
Also, the 1979 BBC version of SHE LOVES ME.

DVD - Charlie Chaplin's LIMELIGHT

Happy Birthday DR Mark Rothman. Wow, what a huge number we had yesterday. I went to bed thinking it would be easy to catch up (or ketchup) and then find 3 more pages when I log on. My, my, my.

It's supposed to be a beautiful late fall day here in NYC so I will go get some breakfast and begin to take advantage of same.

OK, here goes. Some pictures. Not all in one post, but one after the other. First is a picture of Ant and me at my company's Holiday Party in 1996. After that will be various costumes and life shots. They were up earlier but far too big and I have re-sized them so they don't make us wide-screen.

Avenue Q really sounds interesting but I wonder if you really need to see the show to appreciate it?

The Brigadoon recording is excellent and I recommend I got long before I knew about them from BK rep players. And don;t forget about Judy Kaye who is fab on it. And Greg Jbara who really doesn't sing on it.
A great overall cast on this recording and the most complete. The only number I believe is not on it is the Rain Exorcism

Whew...............  :P

All those #*$&ing messages from yesterday!  But they were all entertaining and informative - and I couldn't miss a one of them.

Lovely pictures - I enjoy seeing other DRs in their natural habitats! And there was Jose with the Oz-ians!  And more of Mr BK's art! And today - DR Ben in more costumes than you can shake a stick at!  :D

MDS - your costume was fantastic and the makeup terrific!  I thought you looked a bit more like Guy Haines - but I could see what you were going for.

Happy Birthday DR Mark Rothman!

CD Player - Jeepers Creepers
VCR - BERSERK! with Miss Joan Crawford
DVD - KOI ... MIL GAYA - a sci-fi Bollywood Musical with much to recommend it.  A very nice performance by Rekha as the mother!  And of course LOTS of music!

On the phonograph - FOLLIES - OBC album!

I think we talked about this several months ago, but as much as I like Judy Kaye's Meg on that BRIGADOON CD, I still think Susan Johnson's performance on the old Columbia studio cast album was superior. Judy has the brogue, but Susan has more electricity in her voice, at least to me.

Here I am at work, with nothing to do but post!  I'm not complaining.

DVD--Chicago.  Macbeth joked that it should have a sequel, since he thought either Roxie or Velma would end up killing the other after they joined up their acts--Chicago 2: Velma's Vendetta.

CD--Thoroughly Modern Millie OCR, Nine RCR

Cassette--nothing lately

Ben--those pics are so great.  I think you made an especially convincing Oscar the Grouch!  err...not that you're grouchy...you know what I meant! ;)

DR TD - thanks for the link to the JC review!

DR MDS - a phonograph is something that you play records on.  I think that one day every home will have one, and in fact that records (like CD's, only bigger) will become biggers sellers.  You can have music on BOTH sides!  And there is plenty of room on the cover for photographs and notes in a size of type that can be read!

DR Ben - your pictures have made my day, and it is early.

I am hoping my issue of Scarlet Street arrives in the mail today.

And just because I haven't posted one in awhile - here is the Allison Hayes Photo of the Day.  With co-star Rod Cameron in a lovely Adele Palmer designed two-piece suit (banana yellow).  And, girls, THIS is the way wear a scarf!

Jennifer,

This is for you:

Many, many thanks.  That's all I needed to crack the mystery.   The page I was looking at didn't really  say how to do it  and I still had to figure out using the image button here to make it work.

I’m usually better at  figuring this kind of thing out on my own but I guess I've got to much other stuff going on right now.

Sorry that your not feeling well.  You didn't get a flu shot by any chance?  I know I didn't feel to good after getting mine and my arm was sore for 2 days.

Glad to hear everyone had a safe and happy Halloween.  No pranks here either.

Just  the 3 little kids I told you about last night.  Sweet Tart, anyone?  Sucker?  Dubble Bubble?  Tootsie Roll?   Now and Later?  I've got LOTS of left over candy and what's listed is only part.

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Happy B-day, Mr. Rothman!  Many more![/move]

I'm enjoying all the photos.  I like the artwork, BK.  Your den must be bigger than my whole house!

CD - CABIN IN THE SKY which we are seeing tonight
LP - MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF which we are seeing tomorrow
DVD - ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES Deluxe Edition

Good morning everyone!

I was going to aplogize for my e & t-ness yesterday, but it appears that you all didn't need my help in breaking the post record.  TEN PAGES OF POSTS!!!???!!!   Sheesh... my scrolling finger is going into spasms... :)

Yesterday, I celebrated Halloween by going to dinner with friends and then to a Halloween party.  The dinner was really yummy (sushi!  mmmm.....) and the party sucked.  I didn't know people still listened to dance music.  I thought that once I left high school the appeal of thumpa thumpa thumpa beep ba beep beep  would have ended. :)

For a costume, a went as a gypsy - which basically meant DR Andrea (who went as a Thoroughly Modern Flapper) threw swathes of fabric over me.   It was fun, I read tarot cards.

The party did indeed suck so a bunch of friends ended up in a nearby Starbucks en costume. Now THAT was fun.  Especially since most of us spent that portion of the evening convincing Andrea's CYGOPP that we were certifiably insane.

I'll post again later!

I finally got around to watching BROADWAY'S LOST TREASURES last night, and I really enjoyed seeing the title number from APPLAUSE again. What a hoot! How I wish they had expanded that DVD by at least another hour. I could have suggested at least a dozen memorable Tony clips they could have placed on it.

For me, the top five would include:

"Nobody's Perfect" with Mary Martin and Robert Preston from I DO! I DO!

"Always Madamoiselle" from COCO

"And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" from DREAMGIRLS

"I Hope I Get It" and the finale from A CHORUS LINE

"There You Are/Quit While You're Ahead" from DROOD

And that's not counting "The Aggie Song," "Walking Happy," "She Likes Basketball/Turkey Lurky Time," "Sunday," "We Are What We Are/I Am What I Am," "City Lights," "One of the Boys," "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar," and "Muddy Water." Those are just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are many others.

I just took the SAT on 6 hours of sleep! And I really think I did OK! It was actually pretty easy, especially the english part. "Singer: Choir as Actor: ____? Choices are Band or Play."...is that supposed to be challenging?

The girl in front of me was taking it for her 6th time, because she wanted to get 1500. She was at 1470. If I get 1000 I'll be happy! For now, anyway.

And I have a job, DR's! I am now a waitress/receptionist at the Ashburn Cafe on Friday nights and weekends. The people there are REALLY nice, and my good friend Renzo works there too. Our lockers have been next to each other since sixth grade, and we're always in the same classes. I'm thinking that this might be a little TOO much time spent together, but I guess we'll see.

CD: Mariah Carey's #1's. I'm in a very "dance-y" mood, and this CD has some fun songs to dance to.

DVD: Stigmata...creeeeeeepy movie.

Tape: The accompaniment of "Choose Something Like A Star" for my District audition on Tuesday.

Ben: Those costumes are really great! Especially the prom dress one, tres belle! ;)

I'm getting to 25 soon...

Swishy:  Congratulations on the new job!  That sounds like it will be fun.  And your good friend Rizzo works there?  Well, there are worse things she could do.

Oh, BTW (by the way in internet lingo)  Going over 100 posts last night, and breaking the record for posts on the new site (at the same time) was great fun.  Unfortunately, afterward i didn't sleep very well.  I had to get up three times in the night to use the bathroom.  I wonder if it had anything to do with   being the "full member"?

How's this for a hot post?  Errr, maybe hot posts are not such a great idea considering what you're going though in CA.

Just got back from doing ye ol' grocery shoping.  After I sit down for a miniute, I'm going to take the dogs for a walk.

I know poor Bear is going to be scared when we walk by the house they're putting a new roof on.  They're using one of those nail guns and he HATES that.  He's very sound sensitive.   He would never have made a gun dog--even if he is part Lab.  He's a lover not a fighter.  *chuckle*  Brandi is the one with the attitude.

Speaking of hot, I'm going out later to pick up a pizza.  Little Caesars has their Hot and Ready pizzas for $5.00 that aren't half bad.  The first time I saw the sign all I saw was the kid standing on the side of the road with "HOT AND READY" in big letters--now pardon me, but I had whole different idea as to what that sign referred to until I saw the picture of Little Cesar.  LOL!

In one of my VCRs:  a tape of Wednesday's episodes of the retitled "Star Trek:  Enterprise" (it used to be just "Enterprise") and "Jake 2.0."

In my other VCR:  a copy of a copy of a copy, etc... of the original Broadway cast production of Pacific Overtures that was released only in Japan.  The picture's a little jumpy and the sound has a hiss throughout the whole tape, but it's pretty cool seeing the whole show.

In my DVD player:  nothing...yet.

On my record player:  the 1974 Broadway cast recording and then the Opera House version of Candide.  I'm making CD copies of these for a friend of mine.  I just finished Sarah Brightman's half of the live recording of Song and Dance and I still have to do the "Variations" (dance) half of this recording...but that'll be after Candide.

Nothing in the DVD player, vcr or cd player at home I hadn't planned to be around this weekend. So maybe I will go to Best Buy and see if I can pick up something.

Hey everyone!

Just got back from running some errands.  NEVER step into a video store with a buy 2, get 1 free video sale.  It's just an invitation to spend money you don't need to spend.  But I did get some good finds...3 videos for about 12 dollars.  I bought the Kenneth Branagh musical version of Love Labour's Lost.  It's not that good really, but it's fun and it has Nathan Lane singing There's No Business Like Show Business so that makes it worth it for me.  I also bought Dancer in the Dark (depressing as hell but a great movie) and Waking Life, the animated philosophy-heavy Richard Linklater film that came out last year.

Bounce just got panned in the Washington Post.  I saw it coming, but it still saddens me.  Le sigh.

George--You have the Pacific Overtures tape????  I envy you!!  :P

Koi....Gal Maya = You are not....Alone.  It's sort of a cross between ET and Son of Flubber!  With songs, and drama.  The space ship doesn't land until 1 hour and 9 minutes into the movie.  That's three songs and a basketball game.

For DR Emily: Well I hope BK was right and nobody booed you. The icons are very close together.  I really hope that even if someone doesn't like what another poster says, that they wouldn't take away karma points.

For BK, you wrote:

Jennifer: I don't see the problem you're talking about with the notes, and since no one else has mentioned it, I think we can assume it's your wacky computer.

It is not my computer :)

Really it's not. When you first posted the notes they were out of order. When I woke up this morning they were fixed. I assumed either, you or Mark or Craig fixed them. Maybe anyone else who was up at that time can confirm that I am not crazy!

For DR Danise: Were you trying to post a smiley or a picture? For some reason I only see a square red X in your posts.  If it is a smiley you were trying to post (which was your original question), you don't have to use any imaging on HHW. That clicksmilies site has the imaging already included.

Hmmm that hidden thingie sounds interesting. I will experiment.

Post by: Noel on November 01, 2003, 02:51:58 PM
   Halloween was quite a day.
I heard, about 9:20 in the morning, that there'd been a fire in the subway.  Leaving my apartment three hours later, I naturally assumed that mess would have been cleared up.
   It hadn't been.
All sorts of people were waiting for buses, but Broadway looked prohibitively crowded.  My only hope was take the crosstown bus to Central Park West, where there's a completely different subway line than the one that was down.
But that bus didn't seem to be coming.
Then there appeared a brand new bus, one that runs on some cleaner-burning fuel.  I got on, and it was so crowded, I crouched over the driver, hoping to give him a view of the sidewalk.
But what he was trying to get was a view of his rearview mirror.  A light was telling him the rear door wasn't closed, and the bus doesn't move until that light goes out.  He made an announcement that someone should pull the door closed.  But this didn't help.  He then asked me to close the door from the outside, but, when I got there, that door looked as closed as closed can be.
Knowing that his bus was about to go out of service, I didn't get back on.
Now to snag a cab.  It was quite a battle, as so many people were trying to get a cab.  The one I got the driver immediately said, nastily "I'm only going as far as 72nd Street and Broadway.  I'm taking medication and I need to eat NOW."
"72nd and Broadway will be fine," I said cheerily.  I figured I could catch the 2 or the 3 train from there.  Two stops, and I'd be at Penn Station.  The driver flipped on the radio, and the news confirmed that the 2 and the 3 were once again running.  The hungry driver took Broadway, which was extremely crowded.  His lunch was not coming quickly.
At 72nd and Broadway, a transit worker blocked the door to the still-smoldering subway.  He suggested we walk two long blocks east to get the Central Park West train.
I tried to hail a cab as I took this walk.  They're two rather long blocks, and there were no cabs to be had.  At least not until my driver had eaten his lunch.  So, I took the subway, which came pretty fast.  It was the Sixth Avenue subway, so I needed to switch to the Eighth Avenue subway at Columbus Circle.  That one was a long time coming.
At Penn Station I ran through the crowds to find my train had already left.
Now began a long process of trying to call the office of the theatre department.  All I had on me was an 800 number for the school's admissions office.  I asked for the office in many different ways, and many different operators were confused by my request.  What I wanted was the theatre department in Madison, but there's also one in Teaneck, and there's really something called a Visual and Performing Arts Department.  All my calls led me to answering machines.  I wondered if Halloween is some sort of a school holiday.  Nobody was answering the phone.
My phone messages were clear: I'd missed my train, there'd be another one in an hour, tell my students I'd be late, and please try to call the student who'd be picking me up at the train.  But would these messages be received in time to matter?
With no one to discuss it with, I had to make a decision: Do I take the hour-long train ride in hopes that there'd be a class waiting for me, or give up.  Well, I'm not a quitter, and I'm committed to that class, so off I went on the next train.
For some reason the train stopped a little behind the station, so, when I got off the train, I wasn't landing on pavement, but rather those hillside pebbles that so often lead up to train tracks.  But I survived this "jump" - it wasn't as if the train was moving.
My faithful courier wasn't there at the station, so I now set off on my walk to the theatre where my class is held.  All along, I've assumed that there's some shortcut one can take if one's on foot.  First, I made a diagonal across a big church lawn that a car couldn't do.  Soon, the road had no sidewalk, but I entered the campus next to a soccer field.  Now, I was pretty sure there were athletic fields near the building, but I couldn't see the building, so I went all the way around the field, just as a car would do.  All of this was eating up a lot of time, and I knew if I didn't hurry, my students would give up on me.
So, after going through a tunnel, I made my most fatal error of all.  I decided to leave the road and cut across a grassless area where some construction steel had been dumped.  I figured if the dirt was strong enough to hold all that steel, it could hold me.
Boy, was I wrong.  After a few wayward steps, I found my foot sinking deeper and deeper into the earth.  And when I pulled up my foot, my shoe was still deep underneath the ground.  "Help!" I yelled, but there was nobody within remote hearing distance.  Then I dug my hand a foot or two underground to retrieve my shoe.  My next step produced a similar amount of suction from the imploding mud, but I was able to extract my foot with the shoe still on it.  All along I've my canvas bag around my arm - the one containing my wife's computer.  It's an open bag, so nothing was protected from the element (mud).
Now, looking like the creature from the muddy lagoon, I entered the building and went to the theatre office.  Nobody was there.  Someone's coat was on a chair, but nobody.  I left my shoes and bag outside the door, so as not to muddy the carpet.  I looked in the theatre; no one was there.  I headed for the bathroom.
Washing my hands, it was clear that this mug was going to clog the drain.  I decided to retrieve the shoes and emerge them completely in hot water.  I had to keep cleaning the sinks with paper towels, because the mud was so thick.  I threw away my dress socks.  This was my first day of wearing socks, by the way.  I don't like to wear socks between St. Patrick's Day and Halloween.
Once clean, I took another look in the theatre office.  It was still empty.  So I took a pad of paper and quickly scrawled the events of the day.  Then, walking in those very wet shoes, I again searched for a shortcut back to the train station.  I must have been out of my mind at that point, but I wanted to catch the next train back.  This would give me extra time to wash up before that night's activity: going to the opera.
Yes, the opera tickets were my wedding present to my bride, and I was determined to avoid letting my misfortunes impact all the romance of a night at the opera.  Eventually I took that normal car route back to the train station, crossing the church parking lot.  There, two Little Leaguers were tossing a ball.  One looked me over and said "You work in construction?"  "Yep," I said, concentrating on the problem ahead.  Would the conductor let me on the train in this condition?
I turned my muddy sweater inside-out and tied it around my waste, thus covering some of the mud on my pants.  I slipped on the train, and, at subsequent stops, the train got pretty crowded pretty fast.   People kept sitting next to me and then, thinking better of it, sat somewhere else.  God knows what I smelled like.  Eventually, it was so crowded, some poor soul stayed in the seat next to mine.  Laptop computer out (to mask the bottom of my pants), the ticket-taker didn't notice the mess I was.  On such a crowded train, he didn't have time to.
The subway line I take to get home WAS working, but the original line that had the fire was still out.  As a result, the subway I was on was as crowded as I've ever seen a subway.  And I was the guy who was covered with mud.  Some others, at this point, were dressed in costumes, but they didn't smell so bad.
I took a hot bath, and getting the mud out of my feet has taken a great deal of effort.  But we made it to the opera, and had a lovely time.

Had fun posting those pictures. I put them up and then went back in and re-sized them because they seemed to be taking over the board. Maybe that had caused Jennifer some visual problems.

What a beautiful day it was in NYC. Surprising for the first day of November.

I needs must get some dinner. Anthony is up in Monroe NY on a film shoot, a VERY LOW-LOW-LOW budget independent film. Maybe IFC will be interested. Something about a teenage vampire. I don't completely understand it all, but then, I don't think I'm supposed to understand it all. Dinner, whatever it is, awaits.

Scum, Jennifer, I thought I had it figured out.  Does anybody see the rose and the campfire besides me?  The rose is blooming and the camp fire is nice and cheery to my eyes!  Guess it’s back to the drawing board for me!  I wanted to do both smilies and pictures.  I do think I can get the smilies at least.

There was a slight change in my dinner plans.  When I drove over to get the pizza, I passed the Chinese restaurant and a little voice spoke up and said, “I want Moo Goo Gai Pan”.   So much for the pizza.

JRand53, is that your Tarot deck?  It’s beautiful. Which one is it?   I have the Rider-Waite deck (who doesn’t), a French deck, the Cagliostro and the Medieval Scapini deck.

I use the Fergus Hall "Tarot of the Witches" which has a really cool neo-surrealist look to it.  The Major Arcana cards look ab fab, but the Minor Arcana aren't very well done.  Oh well.

Yes, I do have a few Tarot decks.  All gifts.  I used to do readings for people but I don't and will not anymore.

I guess everyone wants to have their fortune told at sometime.  I had mine done at the Ren Fest a few years back–paid $20.00 for a 10 minute reading.  It was a real hoot.  Part hit close to home but the other part–well....  Let's just say it was verrry interesting and has about about a snowballs chance in Hades of coming true.   ::)

As DR Ron reported earlier, we had a sparkling conversation early Saturday afternoon (my time; late morning for him), but it was interrupted because I had late afternoon guests who didn't leave until almost 9 p.m. We're all auditioning next month for a local production of SHE LOVES ME, and they wanted to see that 1979 BBC version I had on tape. They really weren't very familiar with the show. Imagine!  :)

After they left, I had a chance to crack open finally my INDIANA JONES box set and put in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Boy, is that a beautiful transfer or what? Crystal clear with deeply saturated colors and very sharp. My poor laserdisc won't get much play any more, I guess. Only got about an hour in, but I was impressed with this first film in the set. Plan to watch the others over the rest of the weekend.

I was planning on staying home and taping (to CD) my two different albums of Candide, but I had to go to my sister's house and let the dog out.  She went with her boyfriend and daughter to the Simon & Garfunkel concert in Seattle...so, I went shopping.  I got a brand new reproduction of the original version of Monopoly.  It has the original kind of thick board and the original Chance and Community Chest illustrated cards (not used since 1935!) and the original tokens.  One of them is a purse!

I also got the "Special Collector's Edition" of Star Trek V:  The Final Frontier DVD and the Super Audio CD version of "Got Swing."  It's the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra conducted by Erich Kunzel with guests The Manhattan Transfer (love them!), John Pizzarelli (he's married to that lady who sings in the eBay commercial with Daniel Jenkins*) and Janis Siegel (love her, too).  I was looking for the regular CD anyway (and this can play in any CD player as well) and it cost the same price as the regular CD.  So, a good time was had by me.  I just hope I have enough money to get my car serviced.  The pin rods need to be replaced and I need a front end alignment.  Ugg.

*Yes, I know it's Jessica Molasky.  Love her!

<SNIP>
DVD: "Ragtime"the concert.
<SNIP>
Tom, is this an Australian released DVD or what?  What concert?  Where?  Is it available for purchase?

I was babysitting tonight. This subject was brought up a few weeks ago, but I must reiterate: Becoming drunk if the least attractive thing that a person could do to themselves. The couple left the house at 8, completely sober. They returned just short of three hours later, and were slurring, tripping, and disgusting drunks. While trying to put their twin 7 year olds to bed, they tripped over a gate, and almost landed on their daughter, making her cry, and making them burst into hysterical laughter. A few minutes later, the wife was "talking" to me (completely incomprehensible), when she suddenly spun around, bolted for the bathroom, and proceeded to vomit on the floor. (Oh, a Benjamin Kritzer reference!) I made sure the 2 year old got in his crib without trouble, asked to be paid, recieved $15 (As demanding as it sounds, that is not enough in my neighborhood), and walked out the door. I don't think they saw me leave. I called my dad and he came and picked me up.

WHY DO PEOPLE DRINK? I don't think I'll ever understand. I almost wish I could sneak back into their house and take their picture, just so I could have it to show them someday. "This is what you looked like at age 40 while responsible for three children. Admirable, eh?"

Thanks for all of the congratulations on the job! I'm really excited, it's a great place, the people are really nice and friendly, the food is deliiiiiiish, and I hear you get great tips!

On a completely nonrelated and random note, I can now take the wrapper off of a Starburst while it's in my mouth in under 40 seconds. Skills to be used later in life, I'm sure. What resume would be complete without it? Try it, it's almost impossible.

Where *IS* Den Mother Susan? I miss her.

George,

Tom is not available for the rest of the day/night and I know he won't mind my answering your question... since I know the answer!

RAGTIME was done and broadcast on British TV near the end of last year with Philip Quast; one of our DR from England -- Allan where are you? --made and sent a copy to Tom, the Boy from Oz #1!

DR TCB, I'm going for Sipos.

DR George, That Monopoly set sounds wonderful. When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time alone, and I was OK with it, but the thing I missed is that I had no one to play board games with, and I dearly loved them. Monopoly and Clue were always my favorites. (I also loved another Parker Brothers game called Careers, but I'm not sure it ever caught on very big. I don't think it's been made for many years.)  Kids today (or anyone who loves board games for that matter) who are alone can play these games if they have a computer, yet another reason to celebrate modern technology.

Oh, I meant to mention when an earlier poster was discussing the Warner Legends Collection DVD set (was it you, td or JRand. Sorry, I can't remember), and you mentioned never having seen THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE before. I was momentarily shocked that you hadn't seen such a classic until I realized I've never seen TO HAVE AND HAVE NOT (released this coming Tuesday as bk mentioned a few posts ago). Amazing isn't it how someone can go a number of years and not see films generally recognized as classics!

Why do people drink?

Ah Swishy Sarah, that is quite a question to which here are so many answers!

The same with "why do people take drugs?", "why do people like to get high",  "why do people go to extremes?"...

UNHAPPINESS might be one of the answers?!....

After reading your story, I feel concerned by the fact that the kids now are alone with two drunk parents; that's scary... and Halloween was last night!

I guess I keep making mistakes because I hurt to still be considered a "newbie" after more than a year of posting here!

Newbie! What kind of a word is that anyway?

Is there a Newbie Doll?

Is Oldbie the opposite to Newbie?

So many questions, so few answers!

We won't drink to that, will we?

Dearest Sarah -- I wish I could say that taking that picture of the couple tonight would have done any good.  Unfortunately, until the day comes when they see that very same picture in their own minds, there is little chance that anything, or anyone, will change their lifestyle.

As a recovering alcoholic, sober now for over ten years, I can assure you that I was perfectly capable of seeing drunkenness in others, while blindly unaware that other people saw me in exactly that same way.

Hopefully, this couple will see their true reflection in their mind's eye, before they end up ruining their lives, as well as their children’s lives.

"Fraincois"???? Are you getting even with me?
"member", "bar"... all that sounds so dirty to a pure French newbie like me!

Well, you see: the keyboard in France is slightly different from the US one; besides, the S key is above the X key, and my "propos" were not X rated, so I got confused!

Mr. Francois, you adorable critter, you. . .
Is getting even with you French lingo for going out on a date?  (Although, I'd rather go out on a limb, or a high note, dates are quite small. . .and as Indiana Jones said, "They're dates.  Ya eat 'em!"

Well, you're supposed to put your belly up to the bar, not your member!  Digits are alright. . .

Ah, blame it on the keyboard ( you could have blamed it on the bossa nova, or you could've put the blame on Mame), but are you sure you're letting you fingers do the walking? ? ? ?

Thanks François for answering the George question. no Philip Quast though. the concert was performed in Wales and telecast directly on BBC 4. It is thus in PAL colour. I had it transfered to DVD for Allan and myself. There was little interest shown in terms of TV audience so nothing further was done about a commercial release. most of the cast were retianed for the London production.
Hi Honey I'm home!

Now, don't ask me why but NIGHT is feminine in Franch so it's BONNE NUIT!...

and DREAM is masculine so it's  DOUX REVES!

French language is so confusing!

Welcome back Mr Tom!
Oh, I really thought Mr Quast was in that cast of RAGTIME....

Back from a movie, about which more tomorrow.  Clearly Saturdays are our weakness and we must try to do something about it - maybe we'll think of something special to do on the weekends - that said, no other board on the Internet has this number of posts so we rock and we rule, baby.

Here is a Kritzer photo - the Cinerama theater, when Seven Wonders of the World was playing - perhaps Susan and Benjamin are in the crowd.
