I often have a freakishly good memory, not of when I saw a film, but I usually remember where I saw most movies when I was a child. Of course, Tacoma never had nearly the number of theater's as there were in L.A.

But I used to have a spot on memory of events from my early childhood. It always amazed my mother and usually annoyed my sister.

Now, as I crawl towards old age, the memories are not nearly as sharp.

I have had no sleep, so I will say goodnight.

February 20, 1963: The official date I fall in love with French cinema - the opening of Sundays and Cybele at the Canon Theater.

There weren't a lot of choices for movie theatres and movie trips were fairly infrequent so probably can get it right.

The seven theatres I used to go to donot exist anymore, haven't for years.

There was the Johnny AllWeather Drive In , the Bay Shore Drive In and the Commack Drive In and the Westbury Drive In
All gone.

Then there was the Lindenhurst Theatre and the Bay Shore Theatre, both were originally built as Vaudville theatres and they were beautiful, but they were both torn down years ago

There was the Regent in Bay Shore as well , where my best friend worked as the ticket girlduring high school. Then management decided to turn it into a XXX theatre
It closed and now turned into an event space for concerts and lectures

I just realized I've never been there

Deer Park Movie Theatre and North Babylon Movie theatre were both replaced by stores.

North Babylon became a blockbuster video store

Now it's an urgent care facility

After my Anazin phone call, at BKs suggestion, I did some online shopping

I took the frozen turkey out of the freezer several days ago, so today Wae-Ling will come over and get that cooked. After it is in the oven, I will take the girls to a concert.

Saturday. I am enjoying the movie notes and posts very much.
We had two inside shows (as we called them) - the Ritz - later the Town - and the Prewitt in Plainfield about seven miles away. When I was growing up we also had the CenterBrook, the Maplecroft, and the Templeton drive in theatres. Only the Prewitt and CenterBrook are still open.
The CenterBrook was so named because it was halfway between the towns of Brooklyn and Centerton.
I remember where I saw MOST of the films of my younger days.

Of course we now have our own multi-plex in town Showtime Cinema and a larger multiplex in Plainfield with stadium seating......

I didn’t see a great many movies at the theater as a kid, despite my wishes, so I remember most of the shows and the theaters in which they played. Many were at the Vogue, which became a revival house in my teens and a home away from home. Saw everything from early Bergmans to Singin’ in the Rain there. It’s where I went on Christmas Day each year to see The Magic Flute.

I am dead tired. I knew I wasn't going to get enough sleep last night, and sure enough, 6:45 this morning came all too soon. Horribly soon. And it's a long drive and a long rehearsal. But I'm home and the rest of the day is blessedly mine. All mine.

For years I prided myself on having a nearly impeccable memory when it came to this kind of thing. There were many movies for which I knew I didn't remember the location, but I was unyielding on those that I was sure about.
And then I began to receive my comeuppance.
A few years ago there was a link to the Miami News -- I forget where, but it wasn't on newspapers.com at that time -- and I began researching this very thing for my teen years in Florida. I was amazed to be confronted with proof that certain of these memories were just plain wrong. What, me? Not infallible?
Later, I came across bits of evidence that a few of my Los Angeles memories were skewed, which shocked me more than the revelations of earlier years. For instance, how could I have been adamant for decades that Exorcist II opened at the Pantages, when in fact it opened at the Pacific (BK's Warner Hollywood)? Hell, I even "remembered" where my friend and I had parked the car just around the corner on Argyle that morning when we went to the first showing. Wrong. Just plain wrong. (What's hilarious is that now, as I type this, I forget where I found this out!)
There were a few others, and I can't WAIT to get into it like BK has. Bottom line, though, while I'm still better at it than most people, I've accepted that my so-called perfect memory isn't exactly that, and instead of denying them, I try to receive these things with the pleasure of discovery. Or re-discovery.

When I was growing up most people didn't drive far. My movie experiences were pretty much limited to the Culver theater and the Meralta (sp?). BK and Jane will remember both. I do believe there was also the Palms theater on Motor Ave--right, Jane?--where I saw Porgy and Bess, which I absolutely LOVED!

I watched CHRISTOPHER ROBIN last night. Has anyone seen it? I found it a bit awkward at first as they transition from CR to boy to CR the adult, but once that was established I enjoyed it more. While watching the credits I was surprised to see our very own Richard Sherman at the piano, playing and singing--at the beach, no less!

The air here has been exceptionally dry. Too dry for me.

I'm going through a guilt phase. At noon today, when the ACC closed its door to further adoption of dogs on the euthanasia list, there were eight dogs to be rescued by foster or adoption through ACC agencies or to be murdered. Three have been rescued, and so far today two have been put down. I'm wishing now I had followed my heart and looked into fostering one-year-old Groucho Marx. I might not have saved him, but then again, I might have. Healthy adoptable puppies should not be murdered brcause they are too frightened to dance to the ACC's tune.

For me, the best movie experience is in those old theaters, not the newer multiplexes. I'm not exactly sure why, but the multiplexes just aren't as interesting. Is it because the architecture always interested me vs the plainness of the multiplexes? Anyone else feel this way?

There were just a few specific movie theaters that I went to when growing up, but I couldn't tell you what movies I saw where, or even when. ::) I just don't have that kind of memory...never did.

As do so many. I have a couple of friends here who foster dogs, and they have that necessary space. They also have their hands full with the needy dogs up here!

If I do adopt a dog, it will be one weighing between 30 and 45 lbs, and it must get along with cats. On today's ACC adoption site, these dogs all appeal to me.
Scooter, 2 yrs, 33 lbs.
Ronnie, 4 yrs, 42 lbs.
Spot, 1 yr, 38 lbs.
But I do not know their cat status.
And then there's 35 lb. Mia in adoptions with Wizard of Paws Rescue!

Oh, and the brothers that owned the theater. Later I was told they were a couple and not brothers. I have no idea what the truth was but they were very nice and lots of fun.

May 20th - another great theater experience - Oh Dad, Poor Dad opens at the Biltmore and I go see it during its run - starring Hermoine Gingold, Sam Waterston, and Alix Elias, directed by Jerome Robbins. I think it's just about the funniest thing I've ever seen.

July, 1963, another life-changing theater event - Joel Grey and Julie Newmar open in Stop the World - I Want to Get Off at the Huntington Hartford Theater - I see it three or four times during its run.

As I mentioned, we went to see Terry Fator the other night. I think he's great at some impressions (Willie Nelson, Louis Armstrong, Kermit the frog (!)) but not so great doing Sammy Davis, Jr., Dean Martin and others. I think he would be better as an opening act. His material isn't good enough for a 90 minute show, IMHO.

Last night we saw Celine Dion. Again, I loved some of the songs but not all. I think her speeches about how much she loves the audience are a little over-the-top, but maybe she's really being sincere.

I tried a new topical pain reliever today, Uncle Bud's Topical Pain Relief. It's made from hemp oil (CBD). It did help with the pain, but it has an odor I don't like. It's not a strong odor, but my fave Arnica Rub has virtually none and is also effective. Arnica Rub is also much cheaper.
I am, however, pleased to see new products from CBD, especially for pain. Soooo many people suffer and now doctors are being told to be more restrictive. What's a person to do?

This cream's odor isn't that strong. I just don't like it. Some people might have no issue with it at all, but I am sensitive to odors. I also have an alternative, the Arnica Rub. If I were in pain with NO alternative, I would definitely use Uncle Bud's.
There are many CBD products on the market and I imagine they are all somewhat different. You might like one, but not another.
If it's CBD only. ie, no TCH, you won't get high from it. In the case of the chocolate you could put on some pounds while waiting for it to take effect.

A friend who has a local coffee shop has a CBD brew. If you're a coffee drinker, you might want to try it.

I went to a place in Austin last night called ABGB, Austin Beer Garden and Brewery. One of their brews, the American pale ale, is a fundraiser for one of the animal shelters. They also featured dogs really in need of adoption on a huge wall that you couldn't miss. And they marked which ones had been adopted. I was really pleased to see this from a local business and was glad to discover the fundraiser since i had ordered the pale ale beforehand.

One of my favorites was Linda Gale Lewis, Jerry Lee Lewis' sister. I saw her twice with Robbie Fulks, and they closed out the second performance with "Great Balls of Fire." She plays keyboards like her brother and even hiked up her right leg so she could kick out some of the notes with her heels.

Rachael Ray's party was a bit like SXSW in general this year, a little quieter, a little more low-key.
The food at her house party was her recipe for pulled pork and coleslaw. today it was brisket. Instead of Patron Tequila, local Deep Eddy Vodka was at the bar with the free drinks. The best snack was actually a salad topper: bags of dried cherries and walnuts.

Ray was there for the performance of her husband, John Cusimano, with his band, The Cringe. That's where the best bling of what I attended came from. I got two versions of the band's T-shirt and their latest album, on vinyl and on CD.
I walked out with all that and three bags of those cherries and walnuts.

After seeing "O" the night before, and loving it so much, maybe Celine was a let-down in terms,s of spectacle, since back then (2003) so much of the set was projections. Really great projections, but not real sets like "O." When I saw "Cher" in 2008 there, there was a lot more actual set.

Mom and I got caught for what felt like hours but was likely just seconds on what they called the IIRC "kiss-cam" (?) at the Colpsseum and it's possible they thought we were just a younger man-older woman couple, quite normal for the crowd. I just kissed Mom on the cheek and started waving until they went on to the next unsuspecting people to terrorize. (Actually, the actual couples really seemed to enjoy being onscreen.)

Rachael Ray's party was a bit like SXSW in general this year, a little quieter, a little more low-key.
The food at her house party was her recipe for pulled pork and coleslaw. today it was brisket. Instead of Patron Tequila, local Deep Eddy Vodka was at the bar with the free drinks. The best snack was actually a salad topper: bags of dried cherries and walnuts.
Even low-key, it sounds wonderful.

Ray was there for the performance of her husband, John Cusimano, with his band, The Cringe. That's where the best bling of what I attended came from. I got two versions of the band's T-shirt and their latest album, on vinyl and on CD.
I walked out with all that and three bags of those cherries and walnuts.
Not a bad haul.
