Well, you've read the notes, the notes slept in, and now it is time for you to post until the sleeping in cows come home.

The very next show after Stop the World is another Brit show, Beyond the Fringe.  I always thought I saw that before Stop the World.

And I cannot tell you all the musicals I missed seeing, basically because I didn't ever go downtown - Milk and Honey is about to play the Biltmore with all its Broadway cast, How to Succeed is coming shortly...

August 21, The Caretakers opens - one of the theaters it plays is the Village in Westwood.  I'd already seen it at a sneak preview a month before at the Bruin across the street.  In the opening scene, Polly Bergen is walking down Westwood Blvd. and stops at the Bruin, goes in and goes berserk in the theater.  Interesting sitting there watching a scene that was shot right there.  But it plays across the street at the Village - go know.

November 4 - The Time of the Barracudas opens at the Huntington Hartford, starring Laurence Harvey and Elaine Stritch - I love it, really love it.  After its run, it is scheduled for Broadway - it closes here and that is the last anyone hears of it, as the playwright, so unhappy, refuses to ever let it be performed again.

After over two years, Yum Yum Tree is in its final weeks - the film version with Jack Lemmon has just opened - and it is TERRIBLE.  Completely unfunny, unlike the play I've seen many times.  And I begin to think maybe Jack Lemmon is not as funny as I've thought - but everything prior to this has been brilliant - but from here on in I'm thinking he's just not as good as he was.

And Charley's Aunt is at the Coronet Theater starring Steve Franken.  I go - something I've never forgotten - curtain is held for twenty minutes because Mr. Franken is late - shooting a TV show, but will be there any minute.  The show finally goes on and I adore it and think it's quite hilarious.  But a few nights later I learn what real hilarity is: Tom Jones opens at the Beverly.  So crowded that for the first and last time I'm forced to sit in the balcony.  But I return many times and howl with laughter and drag all my high school friends to see it.

After last night's show, a few of us went to a local restaurant called Octapas Cafe (https://octapascafe.com).  I had the Cubano sandwich, which was pretty good except that I don't care for shredded meats. :P But I ate it.  It was pressed like a pannini sandwich, so it wasn't very loose, but it wasn't too bad.  Afterward, I came home and a friend texted me, and we got into a conversation that took longer than I expected.

A few days after Time of the Barracudas opens, Virginia Woolf comes to the Biltmore - I'm already obsessed with it because of the LP, so I go and see the matinee cast, who are brilliant, as is the play and the production.

The morning edition of the Times, November 22, front page story - "Crowds hail Kennedy in Texas visit."  The evening edition headline tells a quite different story, as you know.  A quite different story.  Many plays cancel performances that night.

No one can move or believe it.  I write about this in Kritzer Time.  I knew nothing of politics or politicians - I knew he was the president but that was about it.  So, while no one can move or anything else, I go see It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

Remember I said Oscar Brown at the Music Box in the earlier 60s was too early for me to have seen him.  Well, June 1964 he's back - and I go three times and meet him and he is so kind and wonderfully supportive - it's in Kritzer Time but it's something I've never forgotten.

I love A THOUSAND CLOWNS...even the disjointed movie.

Back in the mid-1960s, I directed a production in the Redondo Beach/Torrance area.  In fact, at that community theater's annual dinner, several of my actors won awards for their performances.

So what does today hold for the likes of me?

Dusting and reshelving some books. (Who do I think I am all of a sudden? DR Elmore?)

Attending a Mahler Fifth — the execution of which might well be execrable, but I will nevertheless have a good time hearing the live performance and visiting with a few musician friends.

Cooking the veggies and warming the corned beef I cooked all afternoon and evening yesterday.

Eating same.

We watched SALLY (1929), with the legendary Marilyn Miller, last night .

I'd never seen her in anything before and, although she was certainly likable, I don't understand what the big deal was about her.

Her singing and dancing were okay, but nothing to get overly excited about.

The direction of the film was static, so perhaps what she did came across better on the stage than on film.

Also, it was originally a color movie, but except for one short sequence, the film is now in B&W.  (The rest of the color negative is lost.)

Any thoughts?

I slept through the alarm again, so I think it's time for a new clock.  I woke at 7:15 to Thatch's constant badgering about breakfast, fed them, reset the alarm for 8:30 to see if I would hear it, and went back to bed.  Annabelle created a problem that forced me to get up at 8:20, so I have noi answers.  As I was puttering about, I did hear the alarm ring at 8:30, but that was not what I had intended.

Here’s a Sunday question for the class:

What type of alarm clock or other device do you use?

Mine is an older, probably 1980s-vintage clock radio, a type I’ve always been comfortable with except for one feature, and that’s the fact that the time setting buttons are completely unguarded; i.e., you (or, let’s say, a cat) can accidentally change the current time setting at any time. If the design of these had included something else you had to hold down to change the time, like when you set the alarm, it would be perfect.

Most days I don’t have to set any alarm. (The cats come with an automatic person getter upper that is pretty much undefeatable.) But when I do, it’s the clock radio set to NPR, backed up by the iPhone set to five minutes later.

It's this one:

https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/general_el_space_saver_fmam_electronic_digital_7_4624a.html

I didn't have this myself in the '80s. I probably had some newer-fangled thing then, don't remember now, but I do know that in the 1990s I tried two different modernistic gray Sony models, BOTH of which managed to break or fail somehow, and I gave up on them. At some point I found this one at a tag or estate sale and snatched it up for a dollar. That was probably 15-20 years ago, and it still serves me perfectly well.

Try setting the alarm on your phone clock for 5 minutes after your regular clock.

I have a clock I got from Radio Shack a few years ago.  I can see the time in the dark without putting my glasses on.  Keith has the Bose radio/CD clock.

Neither of us set an alarm on these anymore.  We ask Alexa to set an alarm.  If we need a backup for an early alarm we use one or both of our cellphones.

I use my old flip cell phone as my alarm clock.  I can set three different alarms at three different times with three different alarm sounds...even my own music choices that I add to the memory card.

I also have another alarm clock on one side of my bed that I never use as an alarm, but it has a two-inch display that I can easily see the time without my glasses.  I also have a non-alarm clock that also has a two-inch display that I can easily see the time without my glasses on the other side of my bed so that I don't have to roll over to see the time, no matter which side I'm facing. ;)

His niece,Kelly, sent me this photo today of Jim and Michel Legrand at her house a couple of years ago.

One thing I've learned from this wacky newspaper journey - once the Stadium was gone, I only went to the Picfair a handful of times - saw Pocketful of Miracles there, One, Two, Three there, and A Hard Day's Night there, and that was it.  I went to the Lido pretty regularly until we moved to Beverlywood, and then it was very sporadic.  Once we moved, I pretty much only went to first class theaters.  I can't tell you the number of films where I think "that's not where I saw it" only to realized I'd seen a sneak preview at another theater - Dirty Dozen was that way, so was The Prize, Molly Brown, Toys in the Attic, Adrian Messenger, Experiment in Terror, etc.

Dear reader ChasSmith wrote a lovey Amazon review of the new book - he got the Kindle edition.  Here's what he wrote.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magical mystery tour through Hollywood!
March 16, 2019
Format: Hardcover

Bruce Kimmel and Adriana Hofstetter have done it again!

Hollywood's Magic Castle must be the most amazing venue. Throughout my reading of this delightful murder mystery, I regretted not having sought admittance (it's a VERY private club) during the years I lived in and around Hollywood. But I wouldn't have appreciated it then like I would now.

Kimmel provides some interesting details about the general ambiance and the day-to-day workings of the place, which only makes you want more. And like all of the Adriana books, it's populated with the usual delightful characters and authentic Hollywood detail.

A book's success can sometimes be measured in how effectively its author gets the subject matter under the reader's skin. As this story unfolded, I found myself planning on seeking out more info on the Magic Castle itself, and especially on the various categories of magic performance -- something I've always enjoyed, but always in the most casual way, never giving a second thought to it.

Murder at the Magic Castle is a sight for sore eyes for readers who haven't devoured an Adriana Hofstetter mystery in a while. If you've never read one yourself, what are you waiting for? You can start with any of them. Start with this one!

I learned the truth at seventeen: My movie tastes have completely changed after I graduate high school.  I'm doing High Spirits, the final show at Bluth Brothers (and listed in the Times), but I'm no longer running to see the big 70mm movies.  I don't go to Cleopatra, 55 Days at Peking, or The Agony and the Ecstasy.  Instead I'm all over What's New, Pussycat, The Collector, and small films.  In September I start LACC, but sill manage to go to San Bernardino to see Tammy Grimes in Molly Brown in the round.  Virginia Woolf comes back to the old Ritz Theater, now the Lindy Opera House, starring Vicky Cummings and Kendall Clark - Mr. Clark was the matinee George when I first saw the show at the Biltmore, which, BTW, has closed and is about to be torn down.  Virginia Woolf also plays a few small theaters.  And Yum Yum Tree, which closed at the Ivar after over two and a half years, suddenly returns to the Legrand, but not the same production so I don't see it there.  But in October it reopens at the Coronet, with Del Close, James Best, and Brigit Hanley - of course I go, but it no longer seems quite as funny as before.  And The Loved One and Repulsion are about to open and I go to both and love both.

Oh, and an off-B'way musical comes to the Las Palmas and I go and love that - The Amorous Flea starring Lew Parker and a young actor who I'll later become friends with - Philip Proctor.

I'm cast in Peter Pan at Melodyland as an Indian and other bits.  Jane Powell is to play Peter but won't rehearse until just a few days before the 12/19 opening.  I survive one rehearsal and it's painfully obvious I will not be able to get there as whoever's car I borrowed to get there for the one rehearsal will not be obliging me again.  It's sad, but there's nothing to do about it.

New Year's Eve - I'm at some party in Beverly Hills.  I have no way back to my apartment, which is in Silver Lake somewhere, I think.  Nor do I want to go back.  I leave the party around two and walk around Beverly Hills for hours - this is a Saturday.  When stores open I go in and look around and kill time until two when I go see The Slender Thread at the Stanley Warner Beverly Hills.  The credits come on then the first scene and I immediately fall asleep for the duration of the film.  I go home to the Beverlywood house and sleep in my own bed that night.

for decades I had an AM/FM clock radio. These days I have a little battery-operated Seiko alarm clock. I like it because it's easy to read in the dark and it won't fail if the power's out. I seldom use the alarm, but there is the occasional early doctor or dentist appointment. (Such indignity!)

I don't feel like doing much today.

Me either.

(The cats come with an automatic person getter upper that is pretty much undefeatable.) But when I do, it’s the clock radio set to NPR, backed up by the iPhone set to five minutes later.

for decades I had an AM/FM clock radio. These days I have a little battery-operated Seiko alarm clock. I like it because it's easy to read in the dark and it won't fail if the power's out. I seldom use the alarm, but there is the occasional early doctor or dentist appointment. (Such indignity!)

I do hate those early morning appointments.  Having one car between us I often try to get them so I can return early.

Molly Ringwald has shown up in the last couple of episodes. She's still a very good actress, but I wonder if she's had botox or something. Her face looks odd.

I also think you'd have trouble in the house, Elmore, if you introduce a dog. Thatch would be terrified.

TCB, Jane and George: My friend Pam is having a birthday next week. She and her husband are traveling to the northwest and Vancouver. I thought it might be nice to get her a book from a writer from the region. Any suggestions of someone other than Ken Kesey?

The book doesn't have to be about the area or even set in the area.

I'm glad you understand, Elmore. Also, dogs are a lot more work than cats.

The gods are cruel.  Little 33 lb Scooter, whom I had thought about adopting from the New York ACC has been put on their kill list for Tuesday afternoon.  I may have to adopt him to save his life.

What I hope is that someone will rescue him tomorrow, but if he's not rescued before noon on Tuesday, I will apply for him, just to save him.

Elmore,

Please save Scooter.

But, with all due respect, please don't post about these poor animals that are being murdered.

There is nothing that any of us can really do about it, and hearing about these upcoming murders just makes people feel like shit!

Thank you.

My friend Deb has taken it as her mission to make me into a Beatles fan. I don't dislike their music, I just never got into it. So, she gave me 13 of their albums on CD as a belated Christmas present. I'm listening now to the Beatles' Second Album, which has some fun stuff on it, including Money and Please, Mr. Postman, in both mono and stereo. I admit I'm enjoying it.

Two films I was absolutely sure I saw at the Village in Westwood, The High and the Mighty and The Tender Trap - unless I saw them as previews there, which could certainly be as my parents took me to sneak previews as far back as 1954, when I saw Target Earth as a preview, then I in fact saw both films at the Picwood, which seems really odd to me, but...

In the complete entirety of my whole long, long life I have never attended a sneak preview of a movie.

Just last month, I saw a sneak preview of Alita: Battle Angel.  I saw it just a few days before it officially opened.

DR George might be familiar with Jim Lynch who lives in Olympia.  I have read a couple of his books.

Yes, I know who he is.  A few years ago, my library chose one of his books as our "Timberland Reads Together" title.

I looked it up.  The book was THE HIGHEST TIDE which I discussed with my Ashland book group.
