Well, you've read the notes, the notes were fairly non-descript, and now it is time for you to post until the non-descript cows come home.

Watched episode three of Fosse/Verdon - terrible.  There is no way around it - the writing is so horrible and the anachronisms and inaccuracies are unforgivable for a show with a budget like this.  This one was directed by someone else and he's not to hot either.  To wit:

Once again, we have Miss Verdon saying "on set" in 1972.  No, never, no one ever said that then.  EVER.

We have the editor of Cabaret telling Fosse he'd like to show him the assemblage.  Fosse acts like he doesn't know what that means and says, "You edited my movie?"  It's not hard to know that EVERY editor in HISTORY does an assemblage of all the chosen takes, start to finish.  The first assemblage of Nudie Musical ran almost 160 minutes.  Then the editing process begins.  Cabaret was not Fosse's first movie and this idiotic writer makes Fosse look like a moron.

In 1972, they did not make paper shopping bags with HANDLES.  Did not exist.  Real hard to find that out.

At one point, Miss Verdon, in talking about a meeting with a director of a straight play says, "I'll see if we can establish trust."  No one said that back in 1972.  Ever.

Fosse leaves daughter Nicole with Paddy Chayefsky in Fosse's hotel room.  Miss Verdon says just what you'd think and that was not a thing in 1972 - "That's inappropriate."  No.

In the play she does, Children! Children!  the director, which I'll get to in a minute, says, "Play something active."  Not in 1972, baby.  And the director - if I were the estate of Joseph Hardy I would sue this writer from here to kingdom come.  No director would talk to a Tony Award-winning STAR the way this writer has this awful actor playing Joseph Hardy.  But any director who'd talk to ANY actor the way he does would get nothing at all from that actor.  Furthermore, he wouldn't have had much of a career, either.  It's shameful.  It's lazy writing.

And then there's the crying baby, the endlessly crying baby, only in the shots where the baby has his back to the camera it is very clear he's not crying at all.

They couldn't find a performer who actually resembles Joel Grey?  And Sam Rockwell is horrible, I'm sorry.  The fake bald cap, the fake beard, which looks NOTHING like Mr. Fosse's beard - this thing is way too thick and hairy, where Fosse's was trim.

There's more, but why bother.  And people LOVE it.  I understand it to a point, and then the inaccuracies are so silly and unnecessary that I just can't.

Although people in the business might know about  assemblages the average lay person has probably never heard of it, I certainly haven't.  I suspect it was explanation for the  sake of the audience.

I had a childhood friend who had a bit of a melt down after her second baby was born, and right after her father died.  Eventually she did a short stay in a mental hospital.  She looked around and thought "The Snake Pit", snapped her right out of it.

I like Michelle Williams, I just don't like the writing and the silly errors.  While I understand that non-business folks don't know what an assemblage is, it's easy to explain without making a filmmaker look like an idiot.

I have not seen FOSSE/VERNON, though I've just set my DVR to record it.

However, with all due respect, most of your criticisms seem directed at aspects of the series that I would call "dramatic license," which is employed in every film/play that is based on fact.  Perhaps it was written/directed that way for the benefit of viewers who are not of the theatre?

Just a thought.

Looking forward to viewing the series.

A typical Druxian response.  With all due respect, I don't think the life of Mr. Fosse and Ms. Verdon needs dramatic license that's insulting to its characters, just to create drama where there wasn't any.  I don't think it's dramatic license to get silly details totally wrong - details that a five-year-old could Google and find out - I don't know, call me crazy, but God is in the details and when the details are made up I'm done.

I have no problem with anyone who loves this show and I understand why they do, although the ratings are horrible and I don't think anyone other than theater fans are watching and it is obviously appealing to many of them.  I'm not the only one who feels as I do, BTW.  Ms. Williams is great, Mr. Rockwell is not - and some of that is the writing.  Bob Fosse had personality - he wasn't a drudge - why would any woman be interested in what's being portrayed in this show?  Watch any interview with Bob Fosse, the actual person and you will find a completely charming, impish, boyish, fun, seductive person.  Where's that guy in this show?

I guess a "typical Druxman response" gets a "typical Kimmel response".

As I said, I haven't seen the show.  I didn't even know it was on yet, but now I have it set to record.

All I know is that, when you're writing about theatre (or any profession for that matter), you often have to "write down," so that "civilians"  will know what you're talking about.  You also have to condense events to make them simpler.

You're a writer.  You should know that.   ;) :D

Once I see the show, I will let you know what I think of it.

A typical Druxian response to a typical Kimmelian response.  I don't think anyone has to write down to anyone.  There's a way to explain what an assemblage is without misrepresenting what actually happened and making a character look like a dope.  And why even bother explaining.  All you have to do is have the editor say what he probably said, "Here's the assemblage" and have Fosse say what he probably said, "Let's get to work and find the movie."  You know how that works because you've been there.  It would be like me getting details wrong in the Kritzer books - the details are what makes those books.  Yes, I can manipulate time lines in those books for storytelling purposes, but no one knows that I'm doing that but me.  With Fosse/Verdon you're dealing with two very public people.  Whole different kettle of what is it fish.

Wow!

2 people I knew well have died in the last 2 days.

David Winters was one of my very first publicity clients.

And now, I've just read that Ken Kercheval ("Cliff Barnes" on DALLAS) has passed away.

Cliff was not a client, but we had a lot of interaction during the DALLAS years, as Steve Kanaly ("Ray Krebbs") was a publicity client.  I also did an autograph show or two with Ken.

A fine actor and a nice man.

And this happened today:

Pluto retrograde in Capricorn is a time to reflect. If you’ve been on a power trip lately, loosen your grip and let go of the urge to control everything. Similarly, it might be time to sever ties with people who've tried to manipulate and control you. If you don't put the wheels of change in motion now, negative control issues (including obsessive/compulsive behavior and addictions) will keep repeating themselves.

Dear reader JohnG wrote this lovely review of the new book - it joins the other dear readers' lovely reviews.  Need more :)

This Amazon review perfectly captures why I write this mystery series.  And yes, the series is perfect for teens, and moms and daughters really seem to enjoy reading these.  Here's the review:

5 stars

Shout hooray! Adriana Hofstetter's back and better than ever.
April 22, 2019
Format: Hardcover

Sound the trumpets. Adriana Hofstetter is back after a four-year absence, and her fans have good reason to rejoice. Her latest mystery, “Murder at the Magic Castle,” could be her most richly layered and rewarding whodunnit yet. That’s because Adriana Hofstetter’s mysteries have become about much more than the murder itself at the heart of the story. They’re about strong mother-and-child relations, the effects our friends have on our lives, the passage of time, and finding one’s place in the world. Heady themes for a young adult novel , to be sure, and author Bruce Kimmel presents all of this within the framework of another of his favorite themes, the changing nature of Los Angeles (rarely for the better).

Yet, for all that, we are here because Adriana is on the trail of yet another murderer. The story begins on Adriana’s 17th birthday, which Adriana celebrates with her mom, Margaret, and her best friend, Billy, at L.A.’s legendary Magic Castle, where all are enchanted with the location as well as the magicians and the fantastical tricks they perform. When one of the magicians turns up dead and nobody seems overly interested in following up on it, she takes it upon herself to investigate. It doesn’t take her long to unearth more than her share of secrets in all corners of the castle while learning that writing a blog isn’t the safest way of discussing the evidence she has collected. All of this is presented in Kimmel’s breezy style (the great Patrick Bronstein appears, adding his irascible sense of humor to the proceedings), which will have you turning page after page long into the night. Enjoy that light tone, but don’t be surprised if the underlying substance of the book stays with you long after you've closed the back cover.

Didn't feel like sitting in a restaurant, so went to McDonald's and was very careful in my selection, so calorie-wise, exactly 1100, which is more than fine as long as I don't eat anything later, save perhaps some fruit.

What's even odder is that she'd choose to publish this through Amazon's CreateSpace.

She's used them to publish The Golden Apple and Ballet Ballads scores.

I guess the days are gone when a major music publishing house would not think twice about publishing a major score by Jerome Moross.  What a pity.  Nice to see the credit for elmore.

I looked and didn't see the credit for elmore.  I shall look again.

I had a haircut today, then stopped at a nearby library that accepts book donations. I donated a large bag of books, then learned that they now have a $1 shelf of books in very good condition, which I perused. I found an Alexander McCall Smith book and gladly donated the $1. I'm happy to get rid of books I know I won't read again and come away with one I will read.

These sorts of inaccuracies always bug me--and I see them many places. Also on my list are women who wake up in full make-up and with no hair out of place. Men who are wearing lipstick even though their characters would not. Do these people not know their craft? It's both distracting and insulting to the audience.

Now I'm listening to music of Arvo Part, someone whose music I know nothing about.  It's certainly from the minimalist school of minimalism, so imagine Philip Glass with soul and religiosity and you imagine what you'll get.  What's fascinating to me is that Mr. Part, at 83, the THE most performed living composer in the world and has been for years.  Does anyone know his music?  Apparently his violin and piano piece, Spiegel im Spiegel, has been used in a ton of movies.  I'm listening to Fratres, Tabula Rasa (now playing), and then I have his four symphonies (on one CD - none of them are long).  Curious to hear other opinions.

A neighbor who is a supporter of the president today asked the niece if she speaks English! Both niece and uncle were quite offended. I'd certainly heard the name Arvo Part but thought he was some New Age guy, which, if you think about it, is what this stuff really is - New Age classical music.  Although I'm listening to his third symphony now and that's pretty good so far.  Not so repetitious like Glass.  And very well orchestrated.

Not everyone who supports the president would ask such a question, and in Los Angeles I can actually imagine plenty of people asking this question.  Of course starting up a friendly conversation is a nicer way to obtain the answer to the question.

I dozed off for a bit.  Now listening to Arvo Part's first symphony - no dozing off to that.  From his brief twelve-tone serialism period.  By the third he was firmly in tonal land, and was doing some sort of style all his own, which he had his own name for.

Arvo Part symphony number two is even weirder and more twelve-tone and serial than symphony one - it may even be thirteen tones.  And then suddenly at about 3:30 into the final movement, it turns completely tonal and appealing, with a great tune.  It's almost like a lightswitch went on and said, "A tune, my kingdom for a tune." He throws in one crash as if to say, "I haven't given up yet on the loud, but I will soon."

We've moved to symphony three, which I heard earlier - within the first minute I know I prefer the other version conducted by Neem Jarvi, who was the dedicatee of the symphony.  It's more forward and seems to have more sensitivity and openness.  But I really like the work.
Title: Re: THE FAIRLY NON-DESCRIPT DAY
Post by: bk on April 24, 2019, 08:20:44 PM
Fascinating to hear these two performances.  The one now playing glosses over everything, there's no warmth and glow to it, and it is literally four minutes faster than the Jarvi - Jarvi a bit over twenty-five minutes, this a bit over twenty-one.  I'm always intrigued by how one "gets" to you and others don't.

jan, my cat Joshie was a recurring character here on HHW until he passed away two years ago. He is the best cat I've ever had, and I won't ever have another one like him.

I was going to take my time and carefully choose my next kitty. I haven't chosen a cat since I was about ten years old. My daughter always chose them or they just showed up.

Leonard showed up as a kitten in October. It seemed like fate. However, he doesn't really like me.

Kitties can be so pissy when it comes to their people.

My friend Bonnie started feeding a cat who showed up in her neighborhood one day. This was six or seven years ago. He was a mess and he hated anyone who came near. Hissed and spat and tried to bite and claw. She named him Spitzer, or Spitty for short, and didn't give up on him. She got him to a vet, who had to knock him out in order to treat him.

He's now a lap cat, but only with her. Her ex could never touch him, which drove him crazy. This past weekend was the first time that Spitty jumped up on the couch while I was sitting there, and once he even snuggled next to my leg. He even let me pet him once or twice and only lightly. Progress.

I ushered tonight for the non-union tour of Spamalot. I had forgotten almost everything about the show, except for a couple of the songs and some of the more famous lines from the movie ("Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.")

It was a lot of fun. The audience loved it and laughed heartily. Yet there were several things wrong. The "orchestra" was only about five or six performers with an overwhelming emphasis on the synthesizer. And the cast could sing, act and get a laugh, but they lacked the out-sized personalities of Tim Curry, David Hyde Pierce, Sarah Ramirez and Christopher Siebert. All of the characters, if you can called them such, were indistinguishable. It made the story ho-hum. And I'm sorry, but Python has never really been ho-hum.

On the same disc is Drake singing Weill's Down in the Valley. Toni Morrison mentions Weill in one of her essays, which I'm listening to now in the car. The reader pronounces it Wheel and she pronounces Wagner's Ring as if he were related to Robert Wagner. Oy. Double oy.

Lady Jane, I don't officially have any cats.  I have two, sometimes three, that I put out food and water for.  They are very skittish and won't let me near them but one is edging closer and acts like she wants to be petted so fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed.

I don't know any of his symphonies. I will have to correct that.

Get the Neeme Jarvi disc called Tabula Rasa on Deustche Grammaphon - that has the third symphony.  Start there.  On the complete symphonies CD I don't like the performance of the third, but the fourth is very nice, although there's a single CD of that recored at its premiere.  I'm not sure you need to bother with the first two as their pretty extreme.

Progress.

Awww.  I have a friend who, after a long time peariod, now has 2 indoor cats that had been feral.

Listening to Sing Out, Sweet Land, which I have long wanted. Wonderful performances. Can't fault Alfred Drake at his finest, Burl Ives with Big Rock Candy Mountain and Bibi Osterwald with Casey Jones.

John, did you happen to also get Alfred Drake's Lucky To Be Me - A Life in Music (http://www.stagedoorrecords.com/alfreddrake.html)?  I got it, and Sing Out, Sweet Land too, but I haven't had time to listen to either of them, yet.

Oh, no!  This weekend is the semi-annual Olympia Arts Walk (http://olympiawa.gov/city-services/parks/artswalk.aspx), and Saturday is the Procession of the Species (http://www.procession.org).

"And in a nutshell...
Created by the community for the community the Procession of the Species Celebration is a joyous, artistic pageant, embracing the languages of art, music and dance to inspire learning, appreciation and protection of the natural world. The intent of the Procession is to elevate the dignity of the human spirit by enhancing the cultural exchange that we have with each other and with the natural world... and to do that through imagination, creation, and sharing."
