Title: THE BOOK REPORT

Well, you've read the notes, you are up-to-date and happening with the notes, the notes are up-to-date and happening with you, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home or, at the very least, until The Randy Vicar comes home.

Question for the day, for one and all:

What is your favorite close-harmony vocal group?

My own favorite is the Mamas and the Papas.  They didn't record together for very long, but what they recorded was choice.

According to my mother, I wasn't always fond of harmony.  On a cross-country trip when I was very very little, the family was passing through Salt Lake City, and decided to sight-see at the Mormon Tabernacle.  The family isn't Mormon, but Mom wanted to see the place.  As it would happen, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was rehearsing just at that moment...and infant that I was I decided to raise my voice to the heavens as well.  Mom and Dad (and sister) were asked to leave.

My singing hasn't improved any.   :-\

Good morning, all!  I'm getting quite excited about our March 19 Penny O event, and I have a question for everyone coming into New York that weekend?  What are your plans beyond the show and the BIG PARTAY.  We need to get an estimate as well on how many are showing up to make a reservation for Joe Allen's.

Dear Friend BK, I can't believe you've finished that book!  Congratulations, Speedy. How many days are you going to be in New York?  Right now I'm listening to Mr Haines and Miss Egan singing "Two Lost Souls."

The McGuire Sisters are from my hometown, and one of them dated my Uncle Bob in high school.  When I was in grade school, they were puhed in our faces as sterling examples of what we could grow up to be, but all that stopped after Phyllis got caught up in the mafia gossip.  I like their singing quite a lot, but I'd pick the Mamas and the Papas as my favorite vocal group, after the great Andrews and Boswell Sisters.

DR ELMORE there was a nice Box Set CD of the Boswells offered by Collectors Choice music a few months ago.  And the King Sisters have their champions as well.

When we saw the McGuires in concert at the local dinner theatre, they were using a pick up band....Phyllis was trying to conduct them behind her back, finally gave up and said:  "Boys, let us just sing this one."  They also took questions on cards from the audience.  The dentist from their hometown was there....they made him stand up, and Phyllis (definitely the leader) introduced him as "the man who put the first hole in my head."

Manhattan Transfer, Manhattan Transfer and Manhattan Transfer. And another vote for Mamas and Papas.

Not yet sure what we're doing around the time of Penny's show. I know Anthony is busy with dance classes and auditions but I will try to see other Hainsie/Kimlets while they are in town. Good news about the performance at Drama Book Shop. It will be fun to see the songs performed live!

As for me I will go to Footlights, that other used cd store whose name escapes me at the moment but that dr elmoore told me about and where I went with dr td last summer.

I might go see a show Friday night.

Good morning!

NYC plans:  Penny's show, of course, and the partay at JA afterwards - I'll be there.  My niece, Laura, might be, too, but I haven't heard from her in a while.  She and I both arrive at LGA about 5pm Friday and we'll rendezvous to taxi into the city.  Depending on the timing, we may head right to Drama Book Shop, but I doubt we'll be able to make it before bk's event finishes at 7pm.  Is there a dinner get together that evening, too, or are people planning to see shows that night?

Laura and I will probably pal around during the day on Saturday, maybe see a matinee if there's anything good available at TKTS.  We're open to suggestions...

Sunday I have plans to have brunch with my Michigan friend Doug, who lives in the Lincoln Center area.  I'm planning to spend the day Sunday in the LC neighborhood and go to Alice Tully Hall at 5pm for the Illinois State Univ. Wind Symphony concert, conducted by Laura's partner, Steve.  I imagine there's some kind of reception after that, which takes care of Sunday evening.  Laura and I fly out of LGA Monday morning.

Oh, I can hardly wait!

I still have to catch up on the Notes and Posts from the past 48 hours or so.  Just no convenient way for me to get online - well stay online - right now.  But that will change tomorrow.  :)

So...

More auditions today.  We'll be at Chelsea Studios, so I'm gonna head in a few hours early - we don't start until 2:30 - and do some more exploring, and settle into a Starbucks for a while and take advantage of their "hot spot" to take care of some internet browsing.  Until then...

I must say that this time around I am liking all of the teams! But Meredith and Gretchen are my faves!

I'm coming in on the 17th.  The big partay can only be after PennyO's show if I'm to be there (or, of course, on Friday night after the signing, which ends at seven).  Friday would give us the most time.  Although I don't think PennyO's show is THAT long.  The prob with Saturday night is where - I don't know that Joe Allen's will give us a table for that many on a Saturday, but if they would that's my vote.  It's probably not that many anyway, in the scheme of things.

I leave Sunday morning, so hopefully we'll have had our get together prior to that.  If not, whoever wants to get together on Friday night and then Saturday after the show - I'm available.

Vocal groups:  well, close harmony is a fave of mine.  Funny, but I would never think of the Mamas & Papas as a close harmony group.  But, be that as it may, if you like the McGuire Sisters, you should hie yourself to Tower or some other place that handles imports and get as many CDs by Quarteto em Cy as you possibly can.  These four sisters from Brasil (though some of the sisters dropped out--and back in--over their 40 year recording career) do some of the most impossibly beautiful close harmony you will ever hear.  And in the shameless self-promotion department, I must say that my own group Aqabala is one of my faves, especially the song that was featured in Jazziz magazine a few years ago, Wasn't It Spring Yesterday? (Mizmor L'Shekinah), which includes close harmony in Hebrew no less.

Not quite sure about the above.  It depends on which route I go.  If I go the route I've gone, then later in the year.  If it's another route, could be later than that.  I usually spend two or three months editing and proofing, although it took longer last year because I got involved in What If.  I remember finishing Writer Block mid-April and we got it out end of October/early November if I remember correctly.

There was a letter to Matt Roush at TV GUIDE this week objecting to the gay male couple on THE AMAZING RACE this season. The mother objected on the grounds that TAR was a "family show" and that she would have no explanation for her 10 year old son about how two men can be "boy friends." Thus, she was not going to watch the show any more this season.

Thankfully, Matt put her in her place fully and distinctly.

I think it must be an LA thing, since I'm more or less on the west coast and everything is, again uncharacteristically for AOL, fine up here.  Have you tried changing your access numbers?  I find when I'm having AOL problems (which is about every other day), changing access numbers helps.

I am all for the mother/son team.  Patrick seems so gosh-darn endearingly sweet.  And she seems pretty earnest as well.

It's funny but I disagree with you 100%.

I love Rob and Amber (especially Rob).  I loved him on Survivor.  And I love how he is using a Survivor mentality to play this game. He is pure genius.  He might not seem that bright.  But paying the bus driver not to open the back door paid off big time.  And using his construction background to fit all the books in one trip was fantastic.  HE is turning out to be a fantastic TAR player.

It's funny because I was not sure how most people would react to ROMBER on TAR.  I loved him from before, so I knew I would cheer them on.  But I know many others who didn't care for them too much before.  But almost all of them seem to really like them on TAR (they might not want them to win, but they find them entertaining and amusing).

I personally think it's hilarious how the whole show seems to revolve around them.

Btw, I really dislike the mother/son team.  And I also don't care for the nice grandparents. I mean they are sweet and all that.   But I want to see teams who can win (and they clearly have little chance).

I was not happy how the 2 women (who came in first last time) tried to sabotage the Iraq/Beauty queen team last week.  But I was impressed with their skills. And I would really like an all women team to do well.

Not too crazy about the gay team or the black couple or the deanna & hubby team who came in 3rd i think.  But I do think the brother/friend team who came in last has some potential.

It was something seeing another race to the finish. Usually they manipulate the airtime to make it seem like they are in tight race. But so far in the past 2 shows, the teams have arrived at the same time.

Re: last night's American Idol.

Nobody really did it for me last night. Although I like Nadia and Amanda and Carrie a lot.

I think Janay is gone, with either vonzell or lindsey.

And for the guys Travis is gone, with either scott or nikko.

Re: DR MattH's comment about Paula asking Janay's fans to vote for her.  I think Paula just felt bad for the girl.  And she just wanted to be supportive. Although I agree, it was a bit much.  It's bad enough the judges are so vocal about their favorites.  But to encourage us to vote for people who should be gone, is too much.

Uh, I wasn't the one who bought the CD by N'Sync.

(By the way, we're referring to the Nylons circa their recording of "Happy Together."  Two members of the group passed away shortly after that, and the replacement members have been good, but not quite as.)

DR MattH:  I was reading the last two pages of last night's posts, and saw your comment/question about Peter Brown.

Yes, Brown played the deputy on "The Lawman" which starred John Russell.

There are occasional listings at EBay under both names for signed photos.  I have one of Brown in a "draw, pardner"-type pose!  Great stuff!  I've found loads of good photos/autographs of my childhood heroes from TV westerns at eBay.

Here's another question for all and sundry:

What tools do you use for purposes other than what they were intended?

I've just come across an article from the Washington Post, dated March 2nd, on Hardware That Cooks (http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A62472-2005Mar1?language=printer).  Among the tools that are mentioned as being used in professional kitchens are needle-nose pliers, spray-paint tools, propane torches, dental floss.  (This should grab George's attention.)

Me, I've been using chop sticks a lot lately in my kitchen, not for eating but for turning over bacon on the griddle, moving foods around in a pan, that sort of thing.  They're just easier for me to grab and grab with.

But I'm sure we all use tools for "strange" purposes other than in the kitchen, and I'm curious as to what they might be.

DR SWW, last night I used my kitchen tongs (like the ones to take out ice) as a strawberry utensil (to take the backs off).  I couldn't find my little strawberry de-backer (which i love). And it worked perfectly! (same idea just much bigger).

Btw, last night i made the most disgusting dinner ever. It was tuna casserole with low carb (carb option) noodles. They were so gross. I really should have tried them before mixing them with the other stuff. :(

It's entirely due to Paula that we had the abysmal Leah Labelle last year in the finals. (Paula put her through as her own choice after the wild card round was complete.) I don't know why Paula feels such sympathy for no talent ladies, but that's two years in a row that she's shown such feelings.

Look, I'm not rooting for anyone to do a bad job on the show, but when a performer has given THREE bad performances in a row on the live shows, it's time to face the music and call a spade a spade. Asking her fans to vote for her is NOT in her best interests. Why put her in the finals when she has NO chance of winning the title? It's just beyond my comprehension.

It is very clear that Paramount didn't put a lot of time or effort into putting GREASE 2 on DVD. I admit it's not a classic, but there are lots of films from 1982 (and earlier) that look a whole lot better on DVD than GREASE 2 does. I think they must have used a videotape master for this DVD transfer and not bothered remastering it for DVD. At least they did give us a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack.

DR Ann, that was Mikalah, one of my least favorite singers in the competition. She was next-to-last yesterday. Too bad you didn't see one or two of the others who truly are talented.

Mikalah is 17 and sounds 50 with a very wobbly vibrato and horrendous phrasing. All of the judges pounded her last night for a bad rendition, but they have been very lenient on her in previous weeks where I thought she was every bit as lacking in talent as she was last night.

I saw that part last night, also.  And I didn't think she was very good at all!  BUT, all three judges complimented her on taking a risk by choosing a Barbra Streisand song.  They mentioned the pitch problems but didn't tear her apart for it.  It made me want to vomit on the ground!  (a BK reference ;))  I really don't feel that I'm missing anything by not watching the show. ::)

I am all for the mother/son team.  Patrick seems so gosh-darn endearingly sweet.  And she seems pretty earnest as well.

I LOATHE Rob and Amber.  I have always loathed him, from his Survivor appearances, and she seems even more acutely vapid and servile than she has in the past.  As someone said during last night's episode, directed to Rob's face, he's "lucky they don't vote out people on this show."

But aside from those two, all the remaining teams seems to have more personality, or at least are different enough from each other, which was hardly the case with TAR the last time.

Boy do I agree with you on all of the above....

Ron is correct, of course, although why he limited his response to include only China is a puzzlement: chopsticks are also used in Japan, Korea, Indonesia, throughout all of Asia.  However (http://mothra.rerf.or.jp/ENG/Hiroshima/Things/85.html),

Quote
There are many kinds of hashi or chopsticks. Those for eating meals are one, kitchens have another kind for cooking purposes, and for picking up cakes and sweats there is a different kind.

It looks like I'm going to have to get more chopsticks.

Quote
We did have a few ground rules: 1) Steer clear of all freeways; 2) Eat exclusively at non-chain restaurants; 3) Avoid places with tablecloths, French words in the name, and menus featuring the word "rotisserie"; 4) If at any point a waiter refers to him- or herself as a "server," drop metal and walk.

Bottom Line:  I was under NO OBLIGATION to include everyone in the world in my "remark."

PEDANT!   ;D

But, to answer your "question":

I have a little squeeze ball intended to relieve stress.  I've named mine S. Woody, written your name on it, and it is now a voodoo device.  I both use it for its original intent and as a means of working some dark magic.

I guess a lot of where I'm coming from is a more general question: How do we think outside of the box.  Combining both my "different ways of using tools" and my enjoyment of Alton, I just found an interview with AB online from NPR (http://www.npr.org/programs/atc/features/2002/june/cookout/), where he has all sorts of fun with trash cans and hair driers.  It's an audio clip, runs about eleven minutes.  Enjoy!

Okay, I'm working on the March 19 list:
Penny O, Star and Diva
Bruce Kimmel, our charming host and raconteur
Jose
Me
Ginny
Danise
Ben and Anthony
Rodzinski and Gal
Vixmom
W F  Orr
Panni

Am I missing anyone?  I've got 13 here, so I will call Joe Allen's tomorrow and inquire about a reservation for 15 on the 19th of March at 10:30 pm  If they turn me down, I'll make the same inquiry at Barrymore's and J R's.

Dear Friend BK, I'll be happy to meet you later on Friday after your reading.  I'm really bummed about missing the songs.

ADD Michael Shayne

That would make 16 with the spouses

My favorite close-harmony group is Forever Plaid. I also like The Four Aces.

Today, the Jewish Student Union was having some kind of shindig on the lawn over the library today, complete with a petting zoo of animals you'd find on an Israeli kibbutz. Goats, sheep, ducks, a donkey, and a llama. Are there a lot of llamas in Israel?

If only I could add my name to the list.

Must go.  It has been a super busy non-stop day.  I have two more days like this lined up but will try to stop in and say high.

Goodnight.

I found something about exporting Llamas from the US to Israel.

Sorry I'm out of time and can't continue researching this.

No problems with the men chosen for AMERICAN IDOL finals. In fact, they matched my wish list exactly.

As for the women, well, one of them would not have been my choice, but I feel she won't last long up against the talent on display.

Looking forward finally to the sing-offs.

The Goodlife Channel has several old shows I'd love to see again, and I ALWAYS forget to check out its listings when I'm surfing.

Thanks for the info, DR MBarnum.

Wish I could have been a part of that audience, DR Jane!

Yes, DEADWOOD was a good episode. I really find so many of the characters SO interesting, so complex. It's really a well done melodrama if you can get past the swearing (which I have no trouble doing).

ALIAS had me going tonight. I thought, wow, they're angling Sloane to be doing the double agent thing again. Then, it turned out to be something else where he seemed loyal, and then by the end of the episode, amazingly the writers have two agents doing covert operations. (And that doesn't even take into account Vaughn's storyline tonight.)

One thing about ALIAS. It never coasts on a safe wave. It's ALWAYS stirring the mix and keeping the audience off balance.

Interesting American Idol tonight.

There was only one person who I was sad to see go.

I won't spoil it. But don't read the commen below if you haven't see the show yet (and are planning to).

Very interesting, how they decided to call out the people who made it to the top 12, rather than their usual harsh way of singling out the losers. I thought this was much more compassionate.

Beep beep, beep beep, his horn went beep beep beep

I had that 45 as a child, on Roulette if I remember correctly.

Had a lovely luncheon with Rodzinski, a very bright, very nice chap.
Roulette indeed BK.  The wonders of Hugo & Luigi's label.
All those early Jimmie Rodgers tracks were on Roulette too.

Matt H, when the LAWMAN was on Peter Brown visited our elementary school & talked to the kids.  I have no idea why but I remember how happy it made me.  :D

George didn’t I post that “morning breath” photo a year ago? ;D

You probably did.  I couldn't remember where I got it.  But it was funny enough for me to save it! ;D

DR Ben - Tell DR/DP Ant not to worry about his audition.  We all liked it.  Hope the rest of his auditions went well.  -I'll also be playing for some other auditions over the next two weeks, so maybe our paths will cross again.

RE: The snow in NYC yesterday (Tuesday)...

The snow wasn't too bad.  The wind, however, was a totally different story.  Seeing the snow blow horizontally outside the big window at Equity was a bit "scary".  And auditionees kept coming in and commenting on how we were in the "warm room", and how lucky we were to be inside.

That's all my very tired mind can remember to respond to right now...

Today's auditions went well.  They could have gone better, but they went well.  What was "weird" - and this is a trend I've noticed over the past couple of times I've come up to play auditions - is that we had a bunch of no-shows.  And today was agent submission day!  There were people who had confirmed who didn't show up.  There were people who just didn't plain call to cancel or say they were no longer interested.  And there were very few follow up calls from the agents explaining their clients' absences.

However, towards the end of the day, we did end up seeing some pretty amazing actors/actresses who are recent graduates of Circle In The Square's acting program. They made my day.

Close Harmony Groups:

The Manhattan Transfer
Rare Silk (now defunct, I believe)
Toby Twining - Although, the type of music they perform is on the avant-garde classical side.
Rockapella
The Real Group - From Sweden.  My friend, Chris, turned me onto them.  Great stuff!  They have a song called "Chili Con Carne" which is an instant toe-tapper and smile-inducer.
The Bobs
The Nylons
The Persuasions

I also like a lot of the college groups - Yale Whiffenpoofs, Princeton Tigertones, etc.  And I think it's an encouraging sign that the whole male a cappella group circuit is still thriving - and competitive!

-Oh, and when I did The Music Man in high school - I was in the Quartet - I and my fellow School Board Members were made honorary members of S.P.E.B.S.Q.A.!  (The Society for the Preservation and Enjoyment of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.)  -or something close to that.

DR JMK et al...

Have you checked out Mainely A Cappella?

They really do seem to have almost every single available vocal group recording in stock, as well as a great selection of sheet music.  And they also carry a lot of the arrangements and recordings from the college groups.

Must fight urge to run screaming...

Not "Chili Con Carne"!!!!! :D

This song became something of a joke with us NW college vocal jazz types a few years back.  Perfectly decent song, but was so incredibly overdone (usually rather poorly) that none of us can keep a straight face in reference to it anymore!

That being said, I am another Real Group fan.

Not sitting like so much fish, merely catching up on posts and posting if and when I have something to say.
