I'm starting to keep track of Fancy Feast likes and dislikes:
Annabelle: won't eat beef & liver
Stella and Thatch: will only eat sliced chicken if I mix it with chicken hearts & liver

They seem to love any seafood dish except salmon & shrimp, which they will eat only if I mix it with plain salmon.

DR JohnG, I have a cookbook idea for you . . .

I return to City Center today.  I've got the Flower Market scene and reprise of "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" and most - if not all - of "Get Me To the Church On Time."  It's got a lot of dance music so that's been taking up Josh's time.  Songs are easy, because the singer is the primary focus and the accompaniment is relatively light.  Dance music involves the entire orchestra and when you're rethinking a brass section of 6-7 brass players for 3-5, it takes time to adjust that and give the players time to rest so they do not blow their brains out for 4-8 minutes.

I've been reading this new "Letters of Cole Porter," but last night I put it down in disgust at the number of errors in identifying some of the folk mentioned.

For instance: Billy Powell, who went on the Franconia world cruise in 1934 with Moss Hart, the Porters, and Monty Woolley, was not the actor William Powell, but William B. Powell, who wrote for the New Yorker.
Porter mentions the comedy "Once In A Lifetime," and the editors provide a synopsis of the Hollywood film version, but they miss the fact it was a play first by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman.
When Porter in a letter to Clifton Webb sends regard to Mabel, he's referring to Webb's mother, not Mabel Mercer.
When Porter tells Monty Woolley in a letter about his success in On Your Toes to not vomit on Luella, he's referring to comediennce Luella Gear, not Luella Parsons.  Gear had appeared in Porter's The Gay Divorce.

How depressing to hear about such inaccuracies in a book. Any book, really — but when it’s one that by its very nature should be safely considered “scholarly”? Shame on them.

And our DR Elmore is nothing if not scholarly. Here’s a project for you, sir: A companion volume of errata and expansion for one Mr. Suskin’s book about the sound of some music.  :)

It was dreadful.  Maybe I just didn't like the actress at the York.  It had too little to do with the relatively nebulous Linda Porter and more to do with singing some Porter songs.

Thinking of Cole Porter and By extension New Yorkers:

It's interesting that some chatters are strongly seeing as a big flaw in "Moulin Rouge" that the Count (played by Tam Mutu) until we eventually see his bad side is every bit as appealing and charismatic as Christian (played by Aaron Tveit), the poor writer Satine (played by Karen Olivo) is in love with."

Mr Suskin is too arrogant to deal with and too little of a musician to correct his errors.  I admire his enthusiasm and there are many wonderful things about the book, but . . .

And yet SPOILER ALERT -

When Christian (Aaron Tveit) is actually pushed to a level of rage, he ends up being just as destructive when pushed as the Count (Tam Mutu)is!!!

It's just that we don't see that in Christian becoming just as scary-when-pushed until much later in the show.

It could be amazing to Ione day see Tveit and Mutu play each others roles.  (commercially that likely could never happen, because of the keys)

I loved that complexity when I saw it in Boston, but talking to Skip (who saw it last week) and others who saw it here, it sounds like the plot was simplified since Boston -

I think you're looking too deeply at a piece of inconsequential and poor writing called Moulin Rouge.  I can't believe this garbage is still running.

which sounds like it's helping the show commercially. I've been mystified that the book is called slight, which is something I never thought I'd hear about anything by the author John Logan's work (even what he was part of with the movies Skyfall or Gladiator, along with Red and Never the Sinner, even the funny I'll Eat You Last),
Title: Re: FINDING THE PACE
Post by: FJL on November 21, 2019, 05:43:12 AM
but when $28-million is on the line, I guess that happens and maybe the bookwriter has to make concessions to the product.  The book was many things in Boston, I thought, but "slight connective material" wasn't one of them at all, not by a long shot.

yet since the real-life character Danny plays was not ethnic and his being just Caucasian may have been part of the impresario's real-life history. Just like Toulouse Lautrec being abnormally short due to a bone condition forms who je was in real life,  and is not short here since dealing with that might have added complexity there was no stage time for- but was part of who the character Toulouse Lautrec was in life.

Thursday morning greetings!  I was E & T yesterday because it was my first day of freedom after my 5-day post-cath R & R.  Had an early coffee date with Rebecca that lasted until noon, came home for lunch and a nap, then went to an early evening geology lecture at the library where my career started.  I was kind of wiped out, but woke up early this morning.  There's probably another afternoon nap on the horizon before tonight's book group meeting.

I had to answer e-mails quickly and then be on my way to the working lunch.  The working part was fine, the lunch was just about the worst ever - The Counter.  Perhaps it's unfair to judge since I didn't have a burger, but I had their beef chili, which was way too spicy and frequently nauseating, and their crispy onion strings, which were okay but ultimately nauseating - I ate half the chili and could stomach no more.  Never again.

While at the hairdresser yesterday I watched another "interesting" color session. A very attractive woman in her sixties had her base color lightened to a platinum blonde, the the tips randomly tinted pink--bright pink. When it was done she turned to me and said, "Trippy, isn't it?" Trying to think of something positive to say, I told her it was very distinctive. Which it was. I cannot think why she wanted these colors.

Never again.

sorry you had a bad experience. The Counter near me does a very good job. They have a different owner from the one in Studio City. They have a turkey chili that is very popular.

:))  Your response was perfect :)

Blue, perhaps. But not pink.

I think pink is better than the clown red we have seen too much of.

No hail that I saw -- just rain off and on. It is delightful, seeing how we didn't have to drive in it.

I got to play toddler today. I gave him one of those "Popper" toys. He hadn't seen one before, and he had a GREAT time with it.

Back to Wild Rose. The performance is better than the character, at least as far as people I like to spend time with. Perhaps a little too wild. But then again, I'm old.

I got the new Dr. Seuss, Horse Museum, from the library today. Looking forward to leafing through it. I love the premise:

"Let's look at how different artists have seen horses. Maybe we can find some new ways of looking at them ourselves."

Back from a very good rehearsal.  Ran act three three times - the third time started to feel like the play and ran a pretty tight twenty-eight minutes.

sszBe back later.

Well, I didn't go in to watch any of the comics.  I could hear them from the lobby and wasn't impressed.
