Post by: bk on March 22, 2005, 12:00:33 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you're now all Springy, you've got that spring thing, Spring will NOT hang you up the most, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come Springing home.

And the word of the day is: FLAMBOYANT!

If there's FLAMBOYANT can there be FLAMGIRLANT?

I must now toddle off to the bedroom environment, where I hope I shall be able to sleep, what with the smell of newly varnished floorboards.

My favourite wines... how lucky are we here -  Excellent wines available at very reasonable prices. Prefer red wines these days - or dry white. Merlot is probably my favourite drop at the moment.

DR Kerry will appreciate my good fortune in living near the Yarra Valley.  My niece's partner runs a vinyard in the Yarra Valley - the estate was Nellie Melba's property.

My favourite French wine is "Morgon" - that will mean something to a few DRs!

As for the Topic of the Day:  Diet Pepsi is my drink of choice...in just about every situation.  I don't have anything against alcohol at all, it's just that I don't like it.  Never have.  I remember when my family lived in Colorado (when I was between 6 and 10 years old), my sister and I were getting our first (I think first, or maybe very early) communion.  The priest dipped the host into the wine and put it on my tongue.  I couldn't stand it.  I ran out the front of the church and spit it all out...it literally made me vomit on the ground!  Now, I can tolerate the taste/feel of it, but I just have no desire to drink it unless there is some special occasion or toast.

Otherwise, at the local Eagan's Drive-In hamburger joint, they make shakes.  My favorite is peanut butter/chocolate.  Very tasty!  And over where my parents live is a place called Norma's.  They have a large variety of shake flavors.  Very, VERY tasty!

It's now 1:10 a.m. and I must get some sleep.  Goodnight, Tomofoz!  I hope you enjoy the Dutch cast recording of Stephen Sondheim's Passion, especially since TODAY, March 22, is his 75th Birthday!!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BK'S CLOSE AND PERSONAL FRIEND, STEPHEN SONDHEIM!!

And, Happy Birthday to Andrew Lloyd Webber!  (Today is his birthday, too...but he's only 57. :))

Good morning, all!  My socializing continues:  tonight I'm having dinner with British actor/director Martin Conor, with whom I worked on OH, KAY! at Goodspeed, and BABES IN TOYLAND for The Houston Grand Opera, and tomorrow night I'm dining with our WF Orr and Joe.  It's been a whirlwind week, and I've loved every minute.

DRJose, you are always welcome to play Watson to my Holmes (or vice versa), but I'm up at the crack of dawn and you seem to rise at the crack of noon!  If we can get our schedules in sync, we might discover the lost chord.

Dinner last night, with DRs Danise, Rodzinski, and Jose was a sparkling event, covering sundried topics and Artie cuisine.  To quote THE FANTASTICKS, "La! How jolly."

Drinks:  a really good strawberry shake, gin and tonic, vodka and tonic, rum and coke, and good soda fountain cherry coke, with the cola a satisfying blend of syrup and carbonation and real cherry syrup.

Well, this morning (11:30am) is Anthony's callback and he is as prepared as he can be. It's now out of his hands (for the most part).

Happy Birthday to Mr. Sondheim!

Vixmom, I meant to to talk about this on Saturday but we didn't get much time together. Donald's Radio Show is only available on the Internet. Though your computer at work doesn't have speakers, if you have headphones with a long cord, or a long adapter cord you can plug the cord into the back of the computer where the speaker cord would normally be inserted and then listen through the headphones, no speakers needed. You have to do it through the back of the computer (using the speaker plug hole), not the front which often has a headphone port  above or below the CD/DVD drive.

I use this technique to listen to my show, Donald's show and all the BBC shows. The problem with that is, you may not be allowed to listen to music at work. I know that some of our Dear Readers can't listen to Internet radio or even post (TCB for example) at work. If you would be allowed to listen to Internet radio stations, the other issue to consider is that for both Donald's show and my show you need a piece of software (easily available) called Real Player. If you don't have it you can't listen to the show(s). If you are allowed to download programs or your tech person can download it for you then you should have no problem listening to the program(s). You can dowload Real Player, set it up and then mosey on over to Donald's radio program, plug in your headphones and listen. If all this works for you and you listen to Donald's program then I can send you instructions on how to listen to my program (when I'm on which is not every week). If you can't do what I've outlined above, as Bruce mentioned, he will talk to Donald about putting some of the Radio Shows on CD. Since this is turning into an epic post I will PM you info about a possible way to hear my other reviews on the BBC if it turns out you can't listen to Internet radio at work.

When I drink, which is very infrequently, I do like amaretto and soda or sweet vermouth on the rocks with a twist. Otherwise, I'm a big fan of brewed unsweetened iced tea.

Damn!  My top door lock is screwed up, and now I'm stuck here waiting for a locksmith to come over and repair it.

I have to be at the NYPL Theatre collection around 1 pm, so I might as well enjoy the time I'm stuck here.  Maybe I'll imitate DRMattH and watch a DVD.

Good morning...

Back to reality (work) today, but only for 3 days, then I'm on vacation until April 5.

Wish I'd been there for dinner last night with Danise, Elmore, Jose, and Rodzinski.  Elmore, why have I never been to Artie's?

Rodzinski - a very belated happy birthday.

Vixmom - Congratulations to the Vixter on her part in Peter Pan.  Does she get to fly?  Also, tell her the chocolate came from a place in Cincinnati where we'll go for ice cream (their real specialty) when you and she come for her American Girl Kit tour!

Jose - I didn't find my kite cookie cutter yet.  I have a couple of places to try between home and work, but if you happen upon one, please let me know.  Laura and I stopped in Bed, Bath & Beyond Sunday, where you could buy a bucket of 100 cookie cutters.  There must have been a kite in there somewhere.  Also, half-price tickets to Mamma Mia sound great - count on 2 for me.

TOD - I usually have a Manhattan when I'm in Manhattan, but I didn't this past weekend.  Guess I'll just have to have 2 the next time!

Also, scotch and soda with a lemon twist.

I'm not much of a soft drink person, just lightly flavored sparkling water.  But, I'm such a coffee-holic that 2 different people have given me pads of post-its that say "My Blood Type is Coffee."

I don't drink much but I’d always love to have a wine called “Fragolino” since I ran across it during my Italy trip about tree years ago. It was in Como. I mean FRESH Fragolino, not bottled one, which is very tasty and wonderfully sweet smell with a tinge of romantic rose'. Unfortunately it doesn’t exist anywhere in Japan.  Is there any winery in which FRESH Fragolino is produced, in California?

I am a coffee person...I really enjoy a nice cup of coffee...usually black.

For soda my pleasure is Diet Vanilla Cherry Dr. Pepper! I just discovered it for myself a few weeks back and it is quite tasty!

For alcoholic drinks I like martinis..particularly the flavored ones like Green Apple or Chocolate!

At home I usually just drink water, however.

Yikes - one day off and I feel like a truck hit me!!! One more day off, TODAY, and I'll be rarin' to go into a second week of performances. Got one very nice review from Richmond Shepard on livelyarts - he praised Ludmilla Przk's sparkly costumes (you all remember Ludmilla Przk, don'tcha? from the novel?)...

and one strange and quite quotable review on Broadway.com -- it ended with "someone hire this actress, before we get a sequel!" and finished with JEWISH THIGHS ON BROADWAY by Peggy Orloff -- a tad dyslexic?? (He didn't like Ludmilla Przk's sparkly costumes. Thought they looked leftover from the '80's...)  Also he had mis-heard the Romeo and Juliet episode, and thought I had been shot. Thought the parents were "unsupportive".  Thought it was memoir, hidden in a pretend fiction, because of my massive insecurity...

mind you, the piece IS littered with "truth" - that really WAS my first NYC apartment.... but there was no English playwright, no Lapinsky, no French conductor, no Heinrich Unlaut, those odd funny little Jews are decidedly NOT my parents (you can ask BK,. who has known MY parents all his life...), no suicide attempts, no changing my name to get roles...

the guy thought Vladimir Lapinsky's staging was "clumsy" - hahahahaha. You all remember Vlad, don'tcha? From the novel? Anyway, it annoyed said unnamed reviewer NO END that I didn't 'fess up that it was all TRUE, and use my own name. If I were going to pretend it was fiction, at least make it more interesting... but I WILL quote him, I most definitely WILL quote him - "a POWERHOUSE performance" -- even if I seemed desperate for attention.

anyhow, thanks all of you wonderful people for paying attention to my desperate little self...

Drink: I do plain water... my guilty pleasure is caffeine-free diet pepsi. I had a really WONDERFUL sour apple martini about a year ago at the Warner Center at Columbus Cirlce. I drink about a gallon of coffee every morning, to get my brain whizzing. Gives me what feels like GREAT INTELLIGENCE for 3 or 4 hours. Huzzah!!! I'm buzzing right now from a caffeine blast! I may just go get some more!!!!!

DR MBarnum, I love Diet Dr. Pepper and have seen ads on tv for the vanilla/cherry version. But I don't think they sell it here yet.  In fact I"m still waiting for diet cream soda.  Growing up that was my favorite soft drink and i'm dying to try the diet version.

Good Morning!

No donuts.  Yet.  Not Now.  Soon.  Later.  (Ah, yes, another Sondheim reference.)

I sort of slept in today - hey, DR elmore, it's only 10:30! ;) - since I didn't sleep that well last night.  My mind would just not go to sleep last night.  I started going through my schedule for the rest of this week, then next week's trip to Memphis... Then Indy...  Then...  *And I also found out that the other bedroom where I'm currently staying will be available starting May 1, so...  Hmmm....  Just lots of stuff.  I don't think my mind settled down until somewhere around 4:30am.  But what sleep I did get was very good sleep.

My alarm clock this morning at 9:30 was... "Edison!  EDISON!!"  -Actually, it sounded more like "Ed-Son!  ED-SON!" laced with a very Hispanic accent.  Ah, the gas and electric man!  Who knew they still existed - hasn't that sketch been cut from Working?  ;)

So, I let him in, he read the meter in the kitchen, then headed right back out.  Then for the next couple of minutes, I could hear him knocking on each door, and calling out, "ED-SON".  Door by door, and floor by floor.  -This apartment is on the first floor, so...  It was kind of neat, a sort of aural tour of the building's stairwell.  And sometimes, I'd hear a tenant go, "WHO!?!?", then he'd say, "GAS MAN!"

;)

(Hey, the "Peggy Orloff" has now been changed to "Penny Orloff")

And I have been an ungrateful diva bitch - the review I alluded to above has apparently prompted folks to buy tickets. Sheesh, you'd think after all these years I would have developed a tad more graciousness. Ah, well... I yam what I yam.

The real truth - which the reviewer DID get - and which I did not disguise - is that I do a whole show, in lieu of an audition. "Auditions are terrible. They make you forget that Showbiz is wonderful." A real mishegas for me. I just don't do auditions...

As for drinks...

Iced Tea - Sweetened when I'm below the Mason-Dixon Line, and unsweetened when I'm above it.  Usually, when I'm in Richmond and points South, "sweet tea" is usually understood when one orders "iced tea".  You usually have to specify "unsweetened, please."

Soft drinks - I don't drink as much as I used to, but when I do have a soft drink, it's usually a Coke or Pepsi, Regular or Diet.  I also like Dr. Pepper, Birch Beer, Root Beer, Cream Soda, Cheer Wine (when I can find it - it's no longer distributed in Richmond sadly), Ginger Ale (I prefer Canada Dry and Vernor's), etc., etc., etc.   I also like the old-fashioned soda fountain flavors:  Orange, Orange Cream, Grape, Strawberry.   And I like the "boutique" line of sodas put out by Boylan's too.

-Guess I haven't really cut back on my consumption of sodas.  -Oh, and I did have a Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray last night with my dinner.

Adult beverages - Gin & Tonic - preferably Tanqueray.  A "T&T" was the first drink I ever tried, and it's the one I go back to time and again when I do imbibe.  I also like almost anything with Amaretto.  I tried a Rusty Nail once - Drambuie and ?? - and practically spit it out - I found out why it's called a Rusty Nail.  Then there are all the Vodka and Juice variations:  Fuzzy Navel, Greyhound, Cape Cod.

Then there's Sambuca (I prefer the Black), Frangelico, Patron Silver (Tequila), etc...

-Sheesh, I sound like a lush!  I better stop now.

;D

I almost always order water as my beverage when eating out. What restaurants charge for a glass of anything else is outrageous.

Favorite soft drink is Diet Cheerwine. It is EVER so much more delicious than the cherry flavored drinks that Coke and Pepsi put out. Of course, being someone who tries to save pennies when possible, I buy whatever diet drink is on sale each week. The last three weeks, diet Pepsi in its various brands have been on sale, so that's what I've bought. Pepsi One is my favorite of the Pepsi flavors.

Of the Coke flavors, I love Diet Coke with Lime.

As for alcohol, I like marguritas and Tom Collins and Daiquaris and other mixed drinks. Will drink gin and tonic or vodka/tonic when pressed, but prefer something a bit sweeter. Also started drinking Cosmos when they became a fad on SEX & THE CITY, and I find I like them occasionally.

Some of my favorite drinks include Strawberry Lemonade, Vanilla or Cherry Pepsi (with the real syrup). My dad's family used to have the Pepsi truck come out to the farm so I was born and raised on the stuff. I like it much better than coke. I can't stand Aspathame though so I don't handle diet drinks well. I also enjoy V8 Splash in all it's varieties. (Yes, I am a huge fruit juice fan.) Iced Tea is also big in my family. We make it by the gallon and sometimes there will be three or four gallon cartons of tea in our fridge.

As for alcohol, I am a "good" underage kid and have not had much. Maybe a glass of wine with a fancy dinner, or a glass of champagne on New Years or at a wedding. My cousin did convince me to try a glass of Bacardi and Coke while I was in Ohio for my grandmother's funeral, but I made her make it very weak. I'll be better versed in about a year though when I am of age.

Joe and I are alive and well and living at the Marriott Marquis de Sade Hotel in Manhattan.  (The one with the super-high-tech elevators that leave you stranded for an hour, so you can miss your curtain time for a show accross the street.)

Joe is napping, and I slipped over to an Internet Cafe (the first time I've ever used one of these here things) to try to catch up on the posts about our wonderful NY hainesy/kimlet gathering and the Divine Miss O's show.  I'm still only up to Friday's posts, alas and alack, but decided to break my usual rule and cut to the chase.

I will add my own observations about the festivities once I read everyone else's.  But for now...

PennyO:  Remember what Nabokov said.  When you publish a novel, the critics fall all over themselves trying to prove it is autobiographical.  When you write your autobiography, they insist it is all fiction.

Caught BK's close personal friend Dame Edna on Sunday.  As we were in the first row, albeit out on the end, we did not escape entirely unscathed.  She observed that Joe was here with his "grandfather", elderly and highly medicated.  "He doesn't understand what's happening, but he notices the color and the movement," she said, shaking her beaded miniskirt in my direction.

Sunday we dined with DR Jose at Barrymore's, as I assume he has reported.  We had planned to get together once eight years ago when he was in town playing auditions, but he was called suddenly back to Washington.  So this was the Long Expected Partay.

I do not exaggerate when I say that this gentleman is a delightful conversationalist and amazingly modest about his considerable musical talents.

Last night DR and Wussburger Jason joined us at Angus.  It was a treat to finallly meet him and catch up on his life.  He has moved from his famous mouse-infested digs in Brooklyn to a nicer place in Astoria.  Is busy busy busy, and regrets that he could not join our festivities last weekend, but he was ushering at the Met both nights.

More news later. Time to wake up Joe and plan for Hairspray tonight.

It is EVER so much more delicious than the cherry flavored drinks that Coke and Pepsi put out.

 :o

My eyes actually did bug out when I read that. And I have the hiccups, so all the poor saps stuck in the library doing the homework they didn't do over Spring Break have been looking at me kinda funny.

That said, I am a poor sap who is stuck in the library because I have to do the homework I didn't do over Spring Break. (If anyone has any input on the characters Pastorella from Book Six of The Faerie Queene and Marcela from Don Quixote, now would be a good time to spill it. And anything on Oliver Cromwell or "The Collector of Treasures" by Bessie Head would be appreciated too.)

Can you believe my teachers actually thought that we would be writing papers over Spring Break? I just don't understand them.

My favourite drink is Bubbles.  I love a good champagne or sparkling wine...I'm quite fond of Italian Processco.

I like wine.  Usually red.  But can also get into the whites.  I seem to drink a lot of Shiraz these days.  California has a lot of excellent wines.  But Australia is producing some great wines, as are South Africa and Chile.  For awhile I got quite serious about wine in the mid-90's under the tutelage of my close friend back in Lexington who runs the biggest liquor concern  in the city.  I used to subscribe to the Wine Spectator and everything.  The thing is I really don't drink all that much...mostly on the weekend, maybe a glass or two during the week.  But wines I would buy would really stack up...I couldn't drink them fast enough...so I stop buying with the frequency I did. Now that the summer's coming on, I'll probably spend more time on my back balcony with a glass or two.

Soft drinks are usually ginger ale or root beer.  I've had to give my somewhat regular ingestion of coca cola because the acid reflux was just too awful.  I now only order one when I'm out with BK, it seems.

I love a good vanilla milk shake.  The best to be had is at The Beachwood Cafe in Beachwood Canyon in Hollywoodland in the shadow of the sign.  It is one canyon over from where I live.

I like "Monkey in My Hatband" for its mention of Bowling Green, (where I went to grad school) albeit in nonsense lyrics that could be referring to Bowling Green, Anywhere.

I'm not particularlty particular about beverages. I guess I enjoy a good black cherry soda from a brand called Boylan's. Of beer and wine I don't love it enough to have favorites. I wonder if merlot business will suffer due to the guy in SIDEWAYS raving against them.

Two rounds of aural joy arrived today.  First, Percy Faith's soundtrack to The Oscar finally arrived from Amazon almost a month after release.  Now I know that Tony Bennett has gotten a little bonkers in his old age, but his rendition of "Maybe September" on this album is phenomenal--the man's breath control defies description.  These are huge, arching lines (gigantic intervals), and I swear he takes about two breaths during the entire song.  Phrases just hang on and on with absolutely perfect vibrato.  Such a welcome change from the likes of Josh Groban.

And second, the "test CD" from Saturday's Tigard Pops concert arrived.  This is the first "professional" (it's the guy's hobby) recording we've had done, and it's blowing my mind.  This group is open to the public, no audition required, but I must say they sound absolutely incredible.  Our version of Rick Astley's "Cry for Help" is goosebump-inducing, if I do say so myself (and I do, I do--ooh, a Schmidt/Jones reference).

I am in the Rhetoric classroom, eating cotton candy, drinking Cherry Coke, and waiting for class to start. I tried to do my homework between classes, but these three talkative Christians from California came up and asked me if I had a minute. George, and all others who don’t care for the taste of alcoholic beverages, I’m jealous.  I also think it is great you don’t drink something you don’t care for just to do so.  Now I happen to love the taste of a good scotch, whisky or brandy (straight, no ice) but unfortunately alcohol likes me too much.  It doesn’t take long for me to feel the effects of the drink-very unfair I think.  I also love Harvey’s Bristol Crème Sherry.  Sometimes I order it out and they serve plain sherry & I have to return it.

I’m rather fond of French wines and would like to sample a Morgan wine.  I’m more likely to drink an Australian wine in the summer.  Currently my favorite wines are Pinot Grigio and Gewurzraminer.  Incredible is an Alsace late harvest Gewurztraminer.

For mixed drinks  I do enjoy a good Mai Tai or Margarita once in awhile.

CP you are lucky, I had to give up Champagne when acid reflux came into my life.  Prior to that I had already given up all sodas.  I miss the champagne more even if I rarely have it.

Red wine makes me very sick which gives me a good excuse not to drink it-yuck.

Last night's episode of "The Medium" was terrific, IMO.  I love this show so much.

The opening had me in stitches.  The humor is almost always subtle and underneath the surface, but the sight of Marie Antoinette on the guillotine as someone yells, "Let HER eat cake" and Allison (as Marie) narrating, "...it's not like I said let them eat brussels sprouts" as the blade fell was hysterical!

Good Afternoon!

First, the Donut Report:

I can't remember all the flavors they had available today, but the four - yes, four - I bought were:

Valrhona Chocolate
Orange
Walnut
Chocolate-Covered Strawberry

Each of the donuts are totally dipped/immersed in their glazes.  Just enough sweetness, and lots of flavor.  The Chocolate-Covered Strawberry is one of their new Jelly Donuts.  However, unlike regular jelly donuts which have a big glob of jelly/filling in the middle, the Donut Plant Jelly Donuts have jelly on all four sides.  The donuts are cut with a squarish cutter and they still have a hole in the middle.  Once out of the oil and cooled slightly, they inject the jelly into each corner, thus filling up each side.  So...

When I took my first bite of the Chocolate-Covered Strawberry one a few minutes ago... WOW!  Good balance of sweet and tart and richness.  A nice filling of strawberry puree, and the whole donut is dipped in a chocolate glaze.

Right after leaving the store, I settled into one of those benches in the "malls" on Allen Ave.  I started with the Valrhona Chocolate.  Wonderful.  Just a slight chew, but still very light in texture.  Then to cleanse the palate, I had the Orange one.  Finger lickin' good!  -Then I headed over to Chinese grocery store on Grand to pick up a few bottles of water.  Thankfully, no sugar shock.

-Oh, and they had cookies today too!  Chocolate chunk with pistachios and pecans!  -That I started devouring as soon as I grabbed out of the tin on the counter.  ;)

They were apparently very busy this morning since they were featured on TV last nigh on some program.  I'm guessing something on the Food Network.

I shall have the Walnut one as my late-night snack later tonight.

:)

Jane, I can get a little acid reflux with champagne as well...but I can't give up everything I like that gives me a bout of acid reflux or what's the point of living.  The chronic coca cola was something that gave it to me consistently.  Occasionally if I have too much chocolate, I'll get it as well.  I used to love a bowl of cereal and a glass of milk in the morning, but dairy products can give you acide reflux too, so I rarely have milk anymore.  The Lovely Wife, who has acid reflux worse than most, has pretty much given up dairy althogether and uses soy products.  I thankfully haven't resorted to that.

We also use elevated pillows for lounging and sleeping that keep everything flowing downward at night.  Since I gave up coca cola, I don't have the problem as frequently as I once did.

I'm not a big hard liquor drinker...I like margaritas and if I drink mixed drinks, I'll usually have something with vodka in it, because it's relatively tasteless.

To paraphrase Henry the II speaking about Becket: "Will no one rid me of this meddlesome rain?"  It's coming down once again here in LA.

In other news...

It took me about three attempts to leave the apartment earlier this afternoon.

When I first walked out, I had my heavy coat on, but the sun was out, the temp was in the mid-50s, and I just didn't feel like wearing a coat.  -I had a light sweater on.  So, I headed back in to the apartment to drop off my coat.

On the way back in, the young man who was supposed to rent the other room in this place next month had come in too.  He was getting ready to show it to prospective subletters.

So, I head back out, and a few steps from the subway station, I notice I don't have my MetroCard on me.  It was still in my jacket.  Arrrgggh...  So, I head back to the apartment, and fetch my MetroCard.

-The young man had started picking up stuff here and there.  Tidying up the place.

Once back outside, I go to make a phone call...  Where's my cell phone?!?!?  ARRRGGHHH!!!...  So... I go back in one more time, and get my cell phone.

THEN I headed back to the Subway, and grabbed the A Train down to W 4th, and then the F over to Delancey.  And then a few blocks walk over to the Donut Plant on Grand.

-And when I got back this afternoon, the apartment was clean!  Well, at least very well-organized.  Andy, the young man in question, had picked up all the stuff in Nick's room, made his bed, opened the curtains, etc.  He also picked up Graham's room, made the bed, etc.  He put away a bunch of the stuff in the bathroom into the medicine cabinet.  He pushed my stuff into another corner of the living room just to make things look a bit more open.  AND he left a note with his number just in case we couldn't find anything, and he made cookies!!  Chocolate chip.  -Not too many of them were eaten - there's like three dozen on the kitchen counter - so I'm wondering how many people came by to look at the place.

But, still, it was a very nice surprise when I walked back in this afternoon and found all the DVDs and VHS tapes in the living room had been picked up off the floor and put on the shelves.

:)

After leaving the Donut Plant, I stopped at another bench in Sara Delano Roosevelt Park just to sit down for a while, and make some phone calls.  There were a lot of families out walking today, and it was fun watching the little ones chase the pigeons around.

I then continued along Grand until I got to Little Italy.  Then kept walking until I was back in SoHo.

Today's stops included:

Marie Belle Chocolate
http:www.mariebelle.com

I browsed the front part of the place.  Gorgeous displays of chocolates and boxes in which to place the chocolates.  And these were no simple cardboard box affairs.  We're talking leather bound and velvet lined.

At the back of the store, they have their Cacao Bar and Tea Room.  I ordered a small Spicy Hot Chocolate European Style (made with water instead of milk which is American Style).  Absolutely wonderful.  Thick, rich, flavorful.  The hint of chile peppers and heat complemented the chocolate perfectly.  They also had an assortment of cookies and other treats, but I passed on those.  For today at least.

I did another up and down, left and right routine through all those streets.  Then came..

Broadway Panhandler
www.broadwaypanhandler.com

A true cook's heaven!  At least I was in heaven while I was in there.  Such a great store, and very(!) helpful and knowledgeable staff.  Pots, pans, accessories, gadgets, gizmos, cookbooks, stemware, plates, knive - all things culinary.  I actually started to tear up a little bit when I came across the shelf of ice cream/cookie scoops, and they had all the sizes in stock.  Sheesh, emotion over cookware!?!?  I browsed and browsed.  And browsed some more.  I could have easily spent at least $300 on stuff that I saw in plain sight, but, somehow, I resisted, and my wallet never left my back pocket the whole time I was in the store.  I was saying to myself as I was leaving, "I'll come back here once I get my apartment."

:)

I did a bit more window shopping here and there, and made another stop into the Apple store just to witness the madness in there.  3:00 on a Tuesday afternoon and the place was hopping!  The line at the downstairs register was 20 people deep!

DR Ginny - No luck finding a Kite Cookie-Cutter.  I passed a bunch of kitchen supply stores on Bowery.  Nada.  And once I got to Broadway Panhandler, I asked the Baking specialist if she had ever come across one.  Unfortunately, she said, "No, I'm sorry."   But she did advise that you could probably take a ruler, some paper and make template of sorts with interlocking kites, then use a clean straight-edge ruler and a pizza cutter to get the required shape.

After hopping on the W Train back uptown, I headed over to Lincoln Center to see what was going on tonight.  Madama Butterfly at New York City Opera.  A chamber music concert at Juilliard.  Dessa Rose and A Light in the Piazza at the theatres.  The New York Philharmonic is performing Mendelssohn's complete incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream with actors reading from the play.  And the Metropolitan Opera has the classic double-bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci - otherwise known at Cav-Pag.  So...

I picked up at $20 standing room ticket for Cav-Pag, and I shall be heading back down to Lincoln Center in a little while for the 8:00 curtain.  I'm really looking forward to it.  I can't remember the last time I saw anything at the Met, and it's been a while since I've seen a grand scale production of a grand opera.

My cocktail of choice is cranberry juice mixed with Diet 7-Up.  I will, also, drink it with Sierra Mist, but please, spare me the Sprite.

Other than that, it is usually coffee, until noon, and then, water after that.

At first, I thought the notes said "The Randy Vicar and Little Ricky"

One of my favorite exotic concoctions was an "Orange Julius"-- which I can't seem to find anymore. :-[

Other that I go the real hard stuff like chocolate sodas, egg creams, and Diet Coke.

Well, I can't believe it - we're having another torrential downpour.  Nobody, but nobody, is going to tell me that this season has broken every single record in the history of California, rain-wise.   The power went out for a couple of minutes about a half-hour ago.  Naturally, every electric clock in the joint had to be reset, the TV freaked out, Direct TV freaked out, I had to do a complete reboot of the Adelphia cable modem - I mean, really.  A city that has no backup generators, how can that be?

Heard another three tracks today - very lovely and fun.  I'm gettin' all excited about this here album we're doing.

Charles even a little champagne makes me sick.  I keep saying just a few sips won’t hurt but it does.

I also sleep with a pillow under my mattress.  I have a severe case of acid reflux and have to take medication so I can eat.  Now I would never take medication in order to indulge in chocolate (certain chocolates, not all) or ice cream, but it is one of the bonus benefits I get from the meds.  Unfortunately I would prefer to go without milk than drink soy milk.  I’m able now to use a little in my cereal.

And I'm about to fall on my face because I'm sooooo tired.  I had wonderful, wonderful, wonderful time!  Forgive me but I just got in about a half hour ago and my legs are killing me ( I think that might have something to do with ice skating but I'm not sure--   ;) ).    I need a hot bath and two Tylenol or two Tylenol and a hot bath.  Or two hot baths and a Tylenol.  I think you get the picture...    :) :D ;D

At least all the leaks are plugged up.  Except that the water does tend to get under the door in the den that leads to the patio.  Just the left side, but boy does it get in (towels are there now).  When the boys come tomorrow to put the rug back and my dresser back, I'm going to have them fix it however they must.

Danise, it was great fun to meet and talk to you. Welcome home! Rest well. I sure did the past 2 days... just errands, laundry, grocery shopping, pay some bills, take a nice walk on this glorious spring day, and make soup for a sick friend who lives just around the corner. When I took the soup to her, she didn't answer my knock - so I got all Jewish, and called the doorman, who called the building manager, who came up tot he 8th floor with his GIANT key ring... just as my friend opened the door. She had been sleeping, because she didn't feel well. Wow, she was amazed at the commotion around her door, but she took the little pot of soup, thanked me, and just shook her head back and forth.

Goyim... they just don't GET it, do they??? Maybe she had taken a hot bath and fainted, maybe fallen down and knocked her head on the corner of the coffee table, maybe tripped over the cat and knocked herself unconscious... Of course I would call the doorman and the building manager... oh, how did I become my grandmother???

So many lovely liquids I enjoy...
On the soda side of things, I'm a Dr Pepper guy, but also like a Coke, Sprite, root beer, or Cherry Pepsi (sorry Sandra!) now and then.  Red wines most always beat out whites for me, particularly shiraz and zinfandel.  Love iced tea during the summer, but NOT sweetened!  Looks like I'm very much in the minority around here being a beer drinker, a few favorites being Alaskan Amber, Widmer Hefeweisen, and Mirror Pond Pale Ale.  Just don't waste my time with any of that watery cheap stuff!  In the realm of hard alcohol, I'll often go for a whiskey sour.  Hard to beat a good lime margarita, or a gin and tonic (Bombay Sapphire always tops, but will take most any gin other than Tanqueray).  Also a fan of such things as Frangelico, Irish Creme, Chambourd, Kahlua, butterscotch schnapps...  Goodness, I'm sounding like as much of a lush as Jose!  :D  Not, however, a fan of most fruit juice based cocktails.

Speaking of Midnite Movies, I am almost through my mad rush to finish off MGM/UA titles in order to return them for my sparkling $7.10 per title.  I am listening to the Frankenheimer commentary on The Train, then I have Cry of the Banshee (Midnite Movie), which I may or may not watch all the way through, then the commentary to Chocolat (which the arbitrator I spoke to could not explain why it, a Miramax film, was on the list, be she confirmed it was).  Then off in the mail and counting the days until my several hundred dollars arrive.

IDOL tonight was outstanding for many of the singers. I didn't quite go as ape over Carrie Underwood as everyone else did (she did fine, but the background vocalist who was singing the high part was WAY too loud and overshadowed Carrie, I thought).

Other than Mikalah who always does a horrible job (and tonight was as bad as she's ever been; poor thing started out with a frog in her throat on the very first note), everyone else was otherwise good to superb. Constantine was not on tonight as he has been for the last two weeks, and Nadia chose a song that didn't show any colors in her voice, but their voices still delivered.

Worst of the night other than Mikalah I thought was Vonzell and COnstantine.

I think the bottom three will be Mikalah, Vonzell, and Anthony.

(At 10:40, I called each person's number, and not one person had a busy signal. I found this astonishing. Dring the Clay-Ruben year, even this early in the competition, lines stayed busy the entire voting time. True, they could have more lines now, but I still was surprised no one had a busy signal that late.)

Good Evening!

I'm back from the Opera...

Boy, am I glad I only paid $20 for my Standing Room ticket, and not $240 like the people who were sitting right in front of me...  The main thought that started going through my head about 10 minutes into Cavalleria Rusticana, was "Boy, is that one hoary chestnut!"  (-Said to the inflection of, "That is one spicy meatball!")

The operas weren't bad, just extremely old-fashioned. Yes, I knew that going in, but I had forgotten how dated the Zeffirelli staging and design was too.  And considering how big the Met stage is, and how "opulent" the sets and costumes are, there are still those very awkward bits of staging that make it seem like Zeffirelli was working in a black box space.  It also didn't help that the program notes state how nothing really happens in either opera until the closing scenes, so...  And then there was the good ole Metropolitan Opera Chorus.  Singers, yes.  Actors, not really.  Comfortable moving and singing at the same time, eh.  In any case...

Good singers tonight.  The tenor in Pagliacci was making his debut.  He did well, but his voice was the smallest and weakest of the cast.  He also did not move that well - well, at least "chase" that well.  There were more than a few giggles as he halumphed across the stage trying to catch Silvio.  Patricia Racette was in glorious voice as Nedda, and Juan Pons set the bar high after his opening "Prologo".

Starting the evening off, Cav was Cav.  After the orchestra prelude, we hear Turridu singing off-stage.  Then after that, there's another long orchestral interlude while Santuzza keeps "emoting" on stage, and the chorus comes on to show off their various costumes.  Generally good voices, with the women outshining the men.  There were also some unintentional giggles as a result of the casting.  Santuzza was being sung by the Lithuanian soprano, Violeta Urmana.  She is built very solid - not fat, and, well, Lithuanian.  On the tall side too.  Her two competing love interests were played by men of a more squat and stout nature.  I had the impression she was keeping herself hunched over in a few places in order to make her appear more weak and vulnerable.  The "fight" was pretty laughable between her and Turridu, Eduardo Villa.  I would have put the money on her!

However, the biggest giggle and laugh moment - which happens each time this opera is done - occurred right after Turridu has challenged Alfio, Frederick Burchinal, to a duel.  They trade their words, and a few moments after Alfio leaves the stage, Turrido cries out, "Mamma!... Mamma!!" to his Mamma Lucia.  And then goes on to say that he thinks the wine made him dizzy.  -Only in the world of opera.

Good evening
I'm a fan of many beverages, hot and cold.  Always gotta have my coffee, especially fond of espresso drinks like lattes, vanilla flavored.  I'm also one who enjoys a glass of nice cold milk, and I am truly sorry that some of you folks can't enjoy the same.  Chocolate milk has been a favorite, of course, and grape juice too.  Can't go wrong with a nice milkshake, chocolate or vanilla.  Some of the fancier DQ flavors are excellent too.
I like wine, preferring red to white almost always.  Unlike DR Jed, I am not a fan of beer.  I prefer hard stuff when I drink...a gin and tonic, whiskey sour, apple martini, cosmopolitian, mudslide, long island iced tea...okay, better stop before I sound too much like I spend every night boozing it up.  I really don't :D

However, the biggest shock of the evening was watching the audience. And their utter lack of decorum.

I had a standing room ticket.  Standing room at the Met isn't that bad.  You get a numbered space, and they have these "troughs" set up at the back of the house - three rows of standing room 'seating'.  And each person also gets a Met Titles screen for their use or non-use.  Well...

The two ladies next to me... And the young couple in front of me...  And some of the guys behind me... Etc., etc., etc... Kept craning their necks during the whole first half.  At first I thought it was just the fact that it was Standing Room and they were trying to get a better look at the top part of the set.  Well, it turns out they were scouting out regular seats for the second half of the evening.  So, at least I had some extra arm room for the second half of the evening.

And then came the curtain calls.  As soon as the orchestra played the final notes, at least 1/4 of the audience got up and started heading towards the exit.  Even before anyone had come out for a bow.  It was particularly bad - and sad - after Pagliacci finished.  There were so many people just heading on their merry way out the door, and, again, even before anyone was out to take their bows.  And Pagliacci is the better, meatier part of the double-bill.  There was practically no one left sitting in the orchestra section by the time the three leads came out to take their bows.  And by the time the final group bow took place, it was very pitiful.

I mean...  You've paid a lot for your tickets.  You know nothing at the Met ends before 11:00 - even on a weeknight.  You supposedly are a patron and supporter of the Arts.  And you LOVE the Opera.

UGH!  Kind of disgusted me.  Well, not kind of, it did.

End of rant.

Oh.... Red wines... Zinfandels and Pinot Noirs.

And, yes, according to my roomie who is an oenephile, as well as various reports in Wine Spectator, etc., the movie "Sideways" has had some noticeable influence on wine buying habits over the past few months.  Restaurants and bars are evening holding "Sideways" Pinot Noir tasting nights.

As for white wines...  Chardonnays - as long as they're steel-aged.  If I want to taste wood, I'll chew on a branch.  And I'm a big fan of Sancerres - great with salmon.  Pinot Grigios too.

Beers - I used to dislike dark beers on principle.  Whatever principle that was I have no idea.  But dark beers are fine with me now.  Yeungling Lager or Black & Tan are standbys.  But then there's also Sam Adams, Stella Artois, and Heineken.

And, yes, I really do only average about 25 alcoholic beverages a YEAR(!!!).

I didn't even know they did Chicago.  I thought it was just LA and NY.  Seems peculiar, but good for her.  I'll call her tomorrow and find out more about it.  Is it The Canterville Ghost?

I shall now eat a pudding cup with whipped cream.

BK - From Playbill.com:

April 6 and 21: Ebenezer: Return of the Scrooge by Keith Huff (book, lyrics) and Adryan Russ (music, lyrics). "Picking up where A Christmas Carol leaves off, Ebenezer Scrooge keeps Christmas better than any man in town. When Scrooge's Christmas magnanimity threatens nephew Fred and his wife Christine of their inheritance, Christine enlists actors from her acting troupe to portray the ghosts of Christmas to spook Uncle Scrooge back to his penny-pinching senses. Can Scrooge's Christmas spirit survive the night?"

Well, I need to get to bed.  Tomorrow I have a bunch of follow-up phone calls to take care of, and I also need to track down a studio for an hour to and start reviewing my Mamma Mia! part again.

-Oh, and the Walnut Donut was good too!

DR DearReaderLaura - Thanks for helping out with the Kite Cookie-Cutter Quest!

Goodnight.
