Title: BREAKING NEWS
Post by: bk on March 23, 2005, 12:00:12 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you know that we've broken the news, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - and, in breaking news, the cows ARE coming home one of these fine days.

And the word of the day is: BUMBERSHOOT!

I must toddle off to the bedroom environment because the Floor Men will be here promptly at eight.

Questions for BK and DRS:

Do you have a favourite Peter Pan related movie, musical and song? My most recent Peter Pan purchase was an Australian theatrical failure "Pan". I am not sure how well-known it is overseas - it had major input from the Jim Henson Creature shop and there are only a couple of songs on the "Soundtrack".

Time for everyone to play their BK produced "Peter Pan" collection.

Partner Colin's favourite Tinkerbell is Julia Roberts.

Question for Pogue:

Do you write the commercial tv versions of your screenplays? (The alternate dialogue [non-swearing] or material not suitable)

Example below for Pyscho III taken from the not always reliable IMDB

The television version has a completely different beginning with titles that appear before Maureen is seen. Also, the first thing heard on the television version is not "there is no God". When Maureen leaves the convent, the television version has narration giving information about Maureen. The beginning titles do not appear while she is walking to the highway in this version.

In the television version, the hooker is not topless but is wearing a towel.

Thanks for the link to the review DRJOEY.

Yes, DRJOSE practice up on MAMMA MIA!  We want to hear every note!  Nice coverage of The Met from last night.  Opera audiences sometimes seem as though they are trapped until the last note - then it's like kids when the bell rings at the end of the school day!

On the Annette Funicello Yahoo Group (yes there is SUCH a thing) - a member mentioned that he went to Best Buy as well to get THUNDER ALLEY/FIREBALL 500 and that it was not in their system.  They finally found it, spelled incorrectly, and set for release on June 7!  So who knows?

My first question for ASK BK day - did you ever watch any particular soap opera?  If so, why this particular one....did you ever audition for a soap opera or get involved in writing for one for any length of time?  I don't see this information on DR MS's site, but I may have missed it.

According to the weather reports for New York for the rest of the week and into the weekend I will most likely need a BUMBERSHOOT

The New York Times review of Glass Menagerie was, as the British say, spot on, which is sad because I do love the show. Since you need to register to read the NYTimes on-line I won't post the link. Those of you already registered can surf over there and read on your own.

Anthony will not be playing Applegate in Damn Yankees, but the good news is he is under serious consideration for Van Buren, the coach, who gets to sing Heart. He won't find out until the first week of April. The theatre has to finish up casting Beauty and the Beast before they make final decisions on DY. I guess I will have to keep my fingers crossed longer, which makes typing without errors very difficult. Mr. Morelli is a bit disappointed that he won't be playing Applegate but is still happy that he may have a paying job after Forum closes.

No questions yet. Looks like a quiet morning on the homefront.

Well the "Menagerie" reviews seem to put the blame on the director David Leveaux - although the New Jersey paper thought all the curtain manipulation as an audience distraction was a great success.

Thank you DR MS!

Van Buren also gets to do all that funny stuff when Joe comes in to pitch, make up all those funny signals to the players, AND sing in "Shoeless Joe From Hannibal, MO!"  It's a great part!

BUMBERSHOOTS are the order of the day here in SW Ohio, too.  It's very gloomy.

Thanks to both Jose and DearReaderLaura in the quest for a kite cookie cutter.

Ben's mention of Vernor's and Faygo yesterday brought back many memories of growing up in Detroit.  I never cared for Vernor's, except as a hot drink (sounds awful, but very warming on a cold Michigan day).  What really made me smile was remembering the Faygo commercials in which Herkimer the Bottle-Blower (this was when soft drinks still came in redeemable glass bottles) became "too pooped to participate."

I  HATED the curtain thing (and no, I'm not going to change the word hate because it effectively expresses my loathing of that particular stage device, so there too   ;) )

Yes, I think much of the blame can be put squarely on the shoulders of the director, Mr. Leveaux.

Good morning, all!  I'm running late this morning, about 45 minutes or so late.  Today's my last day of socializing in a week:  Dinner wth DR WF Orr and Joe, and I look forward to meeting them this evening.  Last night I had dinner with Martin Connor, a wonderful man I've known since 1988 or so.  He's been performing in Brooklyn with an RSC offshoot "The Shakespeare Review," which was released on CD several years ago.  Since I last saw him in London in November 1999 for the performances of JUBILEE, which the BBC Radio-3 later broadcast, we had a lot of catching up to do.

If I have any questions, they will have to wait until I return later in the day!

Yes, I read the story on AOL about having to revote on IDOL tonight. I'll be watching ALIAS at 9, so I guess I'll have to vote afterwards. I already know I want Mikalah to go home this week. She's simply out of her depth with these other singers, and no re-do is going to change that..

My favorite PETER PAN has always been the Disney version. Used to dream about being able to fly and always hoped as a kid that one day, a pill or something would be invented to make us all lighter than air (maybe if I'd lay off the ice cream, I'd have a better shot at that!)

And I've written here before about the Peter Pan ride at Disneyland that so captivated me.

Undoubtedly, Disney PETER PAN has always been my favorite.

I despise HOOK. I look forward to seeing FINDING NEVERLAND at some point.

We had to do TV loops for The Creature Wasn't Nice/Spaceship/Naked Space.  They were hilarious.  Yet, when the film was shown on one of the cable stations (can't remember which - one with commercials, like TBS, if that's a station) they didn't use them, they just bleeped the words.  My favorite was the running "Holy shit".  I really wanted something that would match the mouth movements of "Holy shit".  We came up with, "Holy cheese".  It was really funny to hear, and I almost prefer it.

Last night's American Idol:

The 3 Stooges were, again (for me), totally worthless opinionaters.

First, and foremost, the performance of the evening was, IMO, Bo Bice who sang a sensitive, beautifully nuanced "Time in A Bottle" and displayed a range -- and vocal ability -- heretofore unsuspected.  I was astonished and captivated.  It's still the ONLY performance of the evening I can recall with perfect clarity.

The 3 Stooges were dismissive.  Uh-huh.  Randy complained Bo's song choice didn't give him a change to show his range.  Uh-huh.  Never mind that Bo has amply displayed his "range" each week in over-the-top rampages of rock, but last night he delivered a song beautifully -- crystalline lower notes superbly voiced and with projection.  It was an amazing delivery.  Paula was all gushy and gooey and echoed virtually everything Randy said.  She was all kissy or chokey with Simon.  The woman has a substance abuse problem, is my guess.  Last night, she was using.  Simon was typically biased and dismissive and totally without an ear for vocal merit.

Can the American public be listening to their spewings?

Second best for me last night was Jessica who sang, a little too closely to the original, "Total Eclipse of the Heart"...but it was impassioned and well sung.

Third was Constantine with his surprising rendition of "I Think I Love You."  For good or ill, this bubblegum song seems forever associated with The Partridge Family," but Constantine made it different and sang it very, very well.

The rest were pretty good, with two exceptions.  Nikko continues to disappoint me.  And somebody please...just shoot me....or her....but NO MORE MYKALAH!

Breaking HHW Dream News:  Last night I dreamt I was at Manderley and there was an HHW connection.  My whole family was at a clothing store which was evidently having a sale.  We all had armfuls of clothes.  We were upstairs at a two-floor store.  Suddenly there was a political gathering taking place there and a lady was giving a speech.  I turned to Betsy and said this would be a good time to sneak downstairs and pay, since everyone was listening to the politician give her speech.  So I went downstairs and there were a few people in line already.  As I waited a tall African American salesman came up to an empty cash register and motioned me over, and as he did he pulled out a copy of Daily Variety and set it on the counter.  There in a bold headline to the left of the Variety logo I read:

DR LARRY ELMORE!!

(Yes, in my dream, it said "DR Larry Elmore".  I know it's redundant, complain to my subsconscious).

I asked the clerk if I could look at the paper since DR Larry Elmore was a friend of mine.  The clerk got quite snooty and said in an uppity voice, "Well, I guess so."  So I took the paper and started looking for the article at which point....

I woke up.

Freudian analysis welcome.  As long as it's free.

I agree that the judges were worse than useless last night on IDOL. Bo has clearly shown he has a voice, can rock, can perform. How GREAT that he did a quiet, effective rendering of a song. They acknowledged he has "it," but they were dismissive of the song choice. Every week can't be a blockbuster-vocal chord scorcher. I LIKE that he's mixing it up. They're too dense to recognize it.

I thought Nikko's rendition last night was the best he's done since IDOL started. I still don't like his voice much, but for him it was the best I think he can do.

I was not swept away by Jessica, but she did reasonably well. Anwar once again did the slow start and build to a sock finish which he has done every single week. There's someone who needs to start mixing it up a bit.

That Partridge Family song that Constantine did had been given a funky, sort of Gothic arrangement (with minor keys modulating into major keys). I didn't think that arrangement did him any favors, but I understood why they didn't want to just redo the bubble gum sound that David Cassidy had with it originally.

I thought the one who betrayed her pristine performance tally last night was Nadia. I thought her Cyndy Lauper song was just terrible FOR HER. She has the voice to not completely butcher anything she does, but it was her weakest outing yet for me.

I've never seen Disney's "Peter Pan" but I've been in a production of the Moose Charlap, et al. My "ask BK" question, Is  "Finding Neverland" appropriate to watch with the Vixter? Since she got cast as an Indian in Peter Pan the other day, she is anxious to see it.

She also has just started reading "Peter and The Starcatchers" which is a  new "prequel" to Peter Pan written by Dave Barry and someone else whose name  eludes me, although if I wasn't so lazy I could go over to Amazon.com and find out....

I have fond memories of the b & w  Mary Martin version of Peter Pan that used to show on the TV when I was a little girl in the ealy 60's.  I definitely like the Disney version.  I haven't been so fond of any of the other movie versions I've seen recently and I particularly despised  "Hook"

I was the keyboardist (and "voice" of Tinkerbell) in Portland's hugely expensive production of two summers ago.  It was the farewell performance of Portland's answer to Mary Martin/Cathy Rigby, Adair Chappell (who, by the way, sings Judy Garland on my demo for Starcrossed).  This production had all the sets and costumes from the Rigby touring show and was opulent, to say the least.  I think it was capitalized at close to 200K.  30 piece orchestra, huge cast, the works.  I actually love the score, but, oy, the conductor's book (which I played from, since I was also the rehearsal pianist and vocal coach) is a nightmare.  That show has been revised, baby.  There are still the original handwritten notes from the first telecast on some pages.

A co-worker suggested to me this morning that it may be because she's under a lot of stress...and maybe she's on anxiety meds or something...because of her hit-run court case.

Whatever it is, she doesn't really seem in control enough to be much good to anyone.  Maybe they ought to bring in a guest judge or two.

For that matter, I think they should ALL be replaced...with folks like...oh....Tony Bennett or Bette Midler or Justin Timberlake or any number of younger/older performers, plus "other" recording business insiders...folks like BK, for instance.

I have no respect for the opinions of any of the Stooges anymore.

Hmmm, I'm just reading about the Idol problem now. So we have a 1 hour live show tonight. And then the results show at 9pm Thursday.

I think Mikalah will definitely be bottom 3.

I was disappointed in Nadia and Anwar (my 2 favs).

I thought Bo was great.  Constantine was funny (very funny song for him).

I didn't like Nadia's song choice or how she sung it. I liked Carrie a lot.  Jessica was okay (i've never really warmed up to her).

Not sure who will be bottom 3. I don't care so much for Nikko or Vonzell but the judges praised them. I just don't think they have as many fans as some of the others.

TAR was GREAT.  Loved the reactions on the plane.  Scary preview for next week with the blood. What's up with that?

When did it become the babysitter's responsiblity to provide video entertainment? And whoever was it who criticized you for not having "better" viewing material than that which you provided??????

Your job is the provision of safety and protection of someone's child.  You should play with the child, either through games or by reading to it.

Plopping a child in front of a video monitor for an hour or two can be fine IF the parents have provided an approved video, but it should NEVER be up to the babysitter to provide such material.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

Well, I knew I was sort of lazing in bed for a while this morning, but I had no idea I had lazed past noon.  Ah, well...

I'm up!  I'm up!

-Yep, that's wet snow I see falling outside the window right now... ah, well.  I do have my BUMBERSHOOT with me, and I shall put it to it's proper use.

In the meantime, I've taken care of some e-mails, and I had a nice lengthy phone call with a friend/conductor of mine.  It was great catching up.  Because he's working right now, and I'm working right now, we won't be able to meet up in person, but the phone call was a great catch up session.

I also got an e-mail from a dear friend of mine, Rachel, I haven't heard from in a while.  I had sent her newborn daughter a Valentine's Day card back in February.  She was finally getting around to telling me she had received it - and that she'll be saving it for Olivia when she gets older.  :)  Rachel and I go back to our junior year in high school - wow, we've known each other half our lives so far!  Reading her e-mail was a great way to start the day.

And speaking of starting the day...

As for "American Idol"... Since I was at the Met last night...

RE:  "I Think I Love You" - David Cassidy actually released a more punked-up version of the song a few years ago.  It was even on a movie soundtrack or two.  My guess is that Constantine used that version of the song.  The song was also covered by a couple of alternative-rock bands over the years.  There was even a semi-rap version of it.

Breaking News
A Broadway Fairy Tale

Last night Joe and I saw Hairspray with the marvelous Bruce Vilanche looking for all the world like Jaba the Hutt, shorn of his voluminous beard.  Although we might have liked to have seen Harvey, Bruce left nothing to be desired in the role.  The entire show was nonstop fun of the highest quality, albeit we had to crane our necks from front row center--aaargh!  Never again.

But the best part began when we entered the lobby and saw that the regular Tracy Turblatt would be replaced by her understudy.  And her understudy was none other than Leslie Kritzer.

Apparently talent runs in the Kritzer family, because Leslie was every bit as entertaining as her cousin Benjamin.  She sang and danced the hell out of the part and had the audience in the palm of her hand from the word go.

I made a special point of yelling "Yay, Leslie!"  when she took her call, standing right above me, where I saw England, I saw France.

Vilanche was quite gracious.  Before he made his Equit/Broadway Cares announcement, he pointed out that this was Leslie's first performance as Tracy, which led of course to another round of applause.  She had tears in her eyes, and I confess that my own were not entirely dry.

Reading Jose's post about the Met audience trying to dash out before curtain calls, I could not help but think of last night's audience, and the smiles on the faces of all the cast.  Hey, folks, these guys just spent over two hours, and God knows how many rehearsal hours, vocal lessons, and dance classes, killing themselves to make you happy.  So what does a little applause cost?  It's their drug, baby!  Give it to them!

My suggestion for viewing material: A book. Some sidewalk chalk. A bouncy ball. A nature-item scavenger hunt. Bubbles. Homemade playdough. Pinecone birdfeeders. Fingerpaint. Cookie-baking. Blank paper and new crayons. Easter-egg coloring.

The Gal was in a Peter Pan when she was little in Gilroy, Calif. There were like 200 kids in this thing, and a lot of money was donated to get the flying apparatus, but they either couldn't use it or weren't allowed to. Still, they wanted to add that extra special something to make the show spectacular, so a live pig was added to the cast.

When I was in Peter Pan here in Olympia, the set designer didn't read the script AND he didn't pay attention to the dimentions of the stage space:  NO OFF STAGE RIGHT SPACE AT ALL!!  He designed a huge ship with a raked  elevated stage area...they built it and had to cut it because it wouldn't fit into the theater!  Also, the "producers" didn't want to spend the extra $3,000 to fly Peter (who, by the way, was played by Stephen Tyrrell, the original choreographer to Das Barbecü, whose production BK recorded!...and he was FABULOUS as Peter) over the audience.  He just went back and forth and sideways.  Rather unimaginative.  The worst part was that they lost $35,000 on the whole production!!  It had it's problems, but it was fun for the actors. ;D

Michael Shayne are they still showing that god-awful Network tv version of PSYCHO III?  I did none of the "TV-friendly" alterations and was agog the first time I saw it run on TV that way.  Would AMC & SCI-FI and other cable networks where it may run still show it that way?

When did it become the babysitter's responsiblity to provide video entertainment?

Sorry I wasn't really clear.  These aren't some random kids I'm watching.  It's my niece and nephew (well actually my sister's husband's sister's kids).

And whoever was it who criticized you for not having "better" viewing material than that which you provided??????.

The 4 year old. :)

Your job is the provision of safety and protection of someone's child.  You should play with the child, either through games or by reading to it.

We did games.  We did coloring.  We did exercise.  But this particular child loves watching animated videos.  And while we were watching Idol and viewing pictures on the dvd, his parents suggested I put him in my bed so he could watch videos (he would have been bored).

Well since it's still cold here I thikn sidewalk chalk is out. :)

Fingerpainting sounds disastrous since he is a slob. :)
(i wasn't that happy when someone gave him chocolate ice cream to eat in my bed). :)

We did coloring. But I think I will try reading.

The thing is there is another kid (his 9 yr old sister) and she needs to be occupied too.  So it's easier to put a video on, and then play a game with one kid (or do art) while the other watches.  Especially since they don't really like to do the same things!

I woke up.

Freudian analysis welcome.  As long as it's free.

Well, there's my question for the day:  JMK, what in the world?

I just heard the sad news that my friend Theodore Uppman, the great opera singer, died last week!  I knew he was in bad health, but once again my good intentions of getting over for a visit with him and his beautiful wife Jean since last April have paved one more road in hell.  He was a great singer, and a lovely gentleman.  He will be missed by many who loved him as much as I.

Hi folks!  I was tired.  I slept most of the morning away.  When I got up, Mom and I talked about the trip.  Then I went online and answered some e-mails.  Then I caught up on all of the posts but was so tired by the time I finished them that I said the heck with it and went and laid back down.  Bear went with me.

I woke up about a half hour ago and feel pretty good now.

I had another Mr. Toads Wild Ride home last night.  The van driver took a wrong turn and we went to Saint Petersburg!  Yikes!

Hey, DR Ben, we DO look alike!  I didn’t believe it when I think DR Elmore told me that but when I saw the picture of us, I have to agree.

I can’t BELIEVE I missed the snow by one day.  Dog gone it.  I really wanted to see some.

But, I did get to go ice skating! You would have been so proud of me—I was as graceful as a gazelle in underpants.

I went around the ring ten times and I didn’t fall.  Not even once.  One guy slammed me into the wall because HE couldn’t stop but I didn’t fall even then.  I’m not saying that I was in the middle of the ring but I was an arms length off of the side. I even went around a few times without touching the side at all.  I was passing people that were on the side as well.

All in all, I was very pleased with myself.  The downside was that I got so hot and sweaty under the sweater and coat that when I got off of the ice I got the chills.  By the time I went back to my hotel room, my teeth were chattering.  I took a good hot bath and changed into some new warm clothes (including my long johns) and I was fine.

Vixmom, don’t feel bad—I know how you feel.  I wish I had time to talk to everyone.  We were such a merry group that night.  You know that usually I am very shy around a new group of people and find it very hard to say very much to anyone.   I felt so comfortable with everyone of our group that there was none of that shyness.  You all made me feel so welcome.

I loved meeting everyone.   I can’t thank you all enough for one of the most wonderful times I’ve ever had.

I have to upload my photos and resize some of them then I will post them.

I would like copies of the ones that have already been posted.  I will gladly send copies of the ones I took.

So much to say I can't get my thoughts straight.

DR Jose, the wi fi card does work but the PDA screen is so small that I had to keep scrolling back and forth to read the posts--it was giving me quite a headache.  I vow to have a notebook computer for next time and as I have a nice chunk of money left over from the trip, that might be as soon as this weekend.

I have found my hotel.  I just LOVED the Muse.  When I come back (note I am not saying IF) I shall stay there.  They had everything one could want.  From an umbrella to the bathrobe to a room safe to the mini bar to, to, to!  The room was large and quiet.  I didn't have to ask for a bathtub/shower either.

I had my bed turned down for me every evening and a cookie/cake thing that was quite good was waiting for me as well.  I always enjoyed it the next morning with my tea.

The dogs really missed me.  I was almost knocked over with dog kisses and thumping tails when I was greeted by them last night.  Bear slept by my side and wouldn't leave me today.

It was wonderful to get away but wonderful to come home.  I missed my mom and was very happy to see that she was ok.   :D ;D

BK, I am entertaining a niece and some of her college chums tonight out here on spring break.  I was thinking about meeting them at the Cat & the Fiddle Pub, but due to the chill in the air was having second thoughts.  So I called Schwab's on the off-chance our pal, Karen was there.  When I asked if she was working tonight, the person on the phone acted like she'd never heard of her.  Wouldn't surprise me if Karen has fled along with Steve.  Ashley may be next, if she hasn't gone already.

I'm back from a lovely dinner and visit with our DRW F Orr and his everlovin' Joe, and what a fantastic pair they are!  We met at Barrymore's and had a lovely meal, they headed off to THE PRODUCERS, and I wandered back home.  I hope it won't be too long before I see them again.

Pogue, that is very disconcerting.  I have Karen's e-mail and phone somewhere, and also Ashley's - maybe I'll drop a line and see what the deal is.  That restaurant is dead to me, if for no other reason than changing the Caesar dressing.  Feh.

I'm meeting the kiddies at the Cat and Fiddle and am awaiting their call (you know kids on spring break...no fixed schedules).  They are also taking cabs everywhere because they are all under 25 and would be charged an extra fifty a day for car rental.  They're coming from Santa Monica.  Four girls and one boy.  You're more than welcome to come!

The Grass Roots are one of those bands that have a lot of songs that get favorable play on "oldies" stations, but aren't really celebrated. They certainly don't get the respect given a lot of their SF contemporaries. Too poppy I guess. There was a time when a band could have a hit without anyone really knowing what they looked like. The Grass Roots had 14 top-40 hits but would probably not have been stopped on the street by anyone recognizing them. Even in the pre-music video world, this facelessness could work against you.

The bass-into-horn intro of "Midnight Confessions" is powerhouse stuff. I don't know that they ever equalled that, in my book. "Sooner or Later," "Two Divided By Love," "I'd Wait A Million Years," "Temptation Eyes"... all staples of oldies formats.

Here's to the Grass Roots, especially the Grass Root who is reading the Kritzer books.

Good Evening!

It's rainy, snowy, slushy, and just plain ugly in some areas of the Big Apple tonight.  -DR Danise - I don't think you would want to see New York in this kind of snow.  It's days like this that give New York City a bad name.

I've been in the City before when it has snowed...  I was kind of surprised that the Subway workers hadn't started treated the stairs into the Subway by the time I left the show.  Lots of ice and slush caked on the stairs.  A bit treacherous.

As for tonight's show...  Penny and I had a good show... ;)

Here the snow seems to have stopped, but it has left a bit on the ground. To this I say, "Boo".

For the Birthday, the gal got me two new PEANUTS books. These two gorgeous new volumes of the earliest ones. 1950-52 is one and 1953-56 is the other. I would have loved the chance to speak with Schulz about the evolution of these characters.
The earliest ones feature just Charlie Brown, Shermy and Patty, and of course the little pup version of Snoopy. Violet then comes as a new girl in town. CB is younger than the other three and can't even read at first.
Just got to the first appearance of Schroeder, who shows up as an infant.
CB is a bit different, a bit of a wise guy who is just developing his loser persona. Violet and Patty are sometimes fighting over him. Great stuff.

As my kid sister's doll, "Drowsy", used to say, "I go sleep now. Night night."

Do you guys think the first act of INTO THE WOODS is appropriate for a 4 yr old boy?  What about the Cathy Rigby PETER PAN?  He loves cartoon videos, so I'm not sure if he will like either of the above.  But I was told I need to get better viewing material for Thursday's babysitting (as opposed to last night where all I had was ALLADIN & STUART LITTLE).
Try the anime section of Kill Bill, Volume 1.

Do the people of Gilroy understand that garlic powder is not an acceptable substitute for pixie dust?

THE GOOD SAD, REDUX...

In our last episode, der B and I returned from upstate Delaware, where we had left little Benny with his new family.  And we thought all was well.

Wrong.

The following evening, we got a call from the Mother.  Aparently, little Benny (now little Baxter) had blood in his stool.  Mother was very concerned, and needed help.

With a severe case of butterflies in our stomachs, we drove back up to Dover, where we met Mom and retrieved little Baxter...Benny...uh, the pup.  Mom's problems included not being able to afford big vets bills, not being able to take time off from work to take the pup to the vet, and having a very distraught Daughter to deal with as well.  Der B and I promised to do everything we could to make sure the pup pulled through.

Our biggest fear was Parvo.  We lost a pup ourselves because of this nasty disease.  But Benny/Bax, upon being picked up by us, showed no signs of the lethargy we associate with Parvo.  In fact, he was quite happy to see us.  When we got him home, we put him in the crate, just in case, but that didn't last very long, what with the upset noises he made.

I ended up with Benny/Bax in my bed for the night, which included hunting him down when I realized that he'd slipped away.  He'd gone into the bathroom to poop (sensible pup), which I scooped into a baggie to show to the vet.  There was no blood in the stool.

We weren't able to get Benny/Bax to see Dr. Chris directly, but were able to drop off the stool sample for him to check.  Meanwhile, B/B was back to happily wrastling with his brother and with Uncle Fletcher.

Der Brucer got on the phone, to find out what else might have happened.  Mom confirmed that she had put B/B in their own crate for the day, which B/B hadn't appreciated.  Der B then contacted Dr. Chris again, and confirmed a theory: what B/B had faced was a very stressful situation, much like any young kid faces on their first overnight camping trip away from home.  And, like any young kid, B/B had suffered from diarrhea, which in turn had caused the bloody stool.

We ended up keeping B/B for an extra night, in case Dr. Chris came up with anything else from the stool samples.  Nothing turned up.

So we drove back up to Dover this evening, to meet with Mom and Daughter.  Daughter was particularly happy to get little Baxter back in her arms, and little Baxter was wagging his tail the moment he saw her.  She thanked us both for having helped make him well again.

So, once again, we drove home with one less pup.  And once again, that sadness mixed with happiness flooded over me.  Der Brucer likened it to what we mean by "a good cry," that strange mixture of feelings for which we don't have a single word.  The Germans probably have a word for it, but they make portmanteaus out of everything.

There was one catch.  Peggy, the pup's mother, was in the back seat of the car on this trip.  But thats another story.
Title: Re:BREAKING NEWS
Post by: S. Woody White on March 23, 2005, 10:14:01 PM
Peggy has turned into a problem.

Yesterday, after taking one trip to deliver the stool (and taking Benny/Bax, Baxter, and Peggy with us on that trip), der Brucer decided we should take the other four dogs with us to the beach.  Marty, Mikey, Bonnie and Buster hadn't been for a special trip for a while, and we figured it was their turn.

We loaded those four into the car, and Fletcher too because he was insistant.  Well, he really forced his way out of the house, but got into the car immediately instead of insisting on our chasing him all over the neighborhood.  So with five dogs in the car we went first to the gas station.  After filling up, der Brucer looked at me and commented on how he had forgotten the camera.  Back we went to the house, and der B took Fletcher inside in exchange for the camera.  (Fletcher had had his beach trip earlier, with Peggy and the pups.)

Because of how our street is set up, it was easier this time to leave by heading to the end of the street and turning around at the cul-de-sac.  It was sort of a good thing that we did that, too, because when we were passing by our house again, Peggy was in our front yard!  She had found a way to climb up and over the fence.  She wanted to go with us!

I ended up carrying Peggy back into the house, and we blocked the doggy door so she couldn't get out again.

Der Brucer will post a pic or two of the beach trip later.

Everyone had a good time at the beach, and got back to the house happy as hounds.  But der Brucer and I had another trip to take, errands to run, and, after reopening the doggy door started to drive off again.

This time I watched as Peggy scaled the fence again.

I carried her back inside again.  The doggy door was closed again.

So, now that Peggy knows how to climb over the fence, it seems we cannot trust her not to try every time she is loose in the back yard.  We're only able to let her out if we're with her, connected by a leash.

This story, unfortunately, gets a "To Be Continued..." logo for now.   :P

I had dinner at my parents' house (sloppy joe-like stuff...I don't know exactly what it was, but it was pretty good) and my mom made Jell-O® with canned tangerine slices.  It was quite tasty.  I brought some Schwann's frozen peanut butter and chocolate chunk cookie dough.  We baked some of the dough and had fresh and hot from the oven cookies.  These were much, much, much (that's three muches) better than the Jell-O® (even though it was quite tasty).  Each cookie (let me say that again), EACH cookie was 190 calories!  But worth every calorie! ;D
