Post by: bk on January 18, 2020, 12:25:03 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were noted all too soon, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be home all too soon.

The cats are misbehaving this morning and they left me a huge mess to clean up.  Goodie-goodie Thatch is responsible for the vandalism of a package of kitty treats that litter the floor, Stella left a mess on the bathroom floor from playing in the waste basket, and Annabelle's rambling resulted in the death of my table fan. What a day!

Being cats is why I love them.  Still, kitty cleanup was huge this morning, and I at times have resorted to locking them in the bathroom while I work.

Taking care of Annabelle's damage to the table fan will take me a while.  I have things to move and plugs and outlets to reach.

Since John Russell was once my publicity client, I was  quite interested to read "LAWMAN: A Companion to the Classic TV Western Series" by Bill Levy, published by BearManor Media.

Well researched, this excellent book guides you through all 156 episodes of the popular 1958-1962 series, which starred Russell as "Marshal Dan Troop", Peter Brown and Peggy Castle. The 225 page volume supplies cast, crew, synopses and background information for each 1/2 hour show.  There are also anecdotes by actors who appeared on various episodes, plus plenty of photos, and a Foreword by Will "Sugarfoot" Hutchins.

I had to make a corner bodega trip.  I ran into my neighbor Judy, the wife of jazz pianist Mark Soskin.  She was picking up things for a flight today to Dallas, where Mark was performing there and who's has been hospitalized with a health issue.  I hope he's okay.  They're really wonderful neighbors.

I had to go over to my uncle's house.....he turned off his computer by pressing the button and so of course got the blank screen when he turned it on.....etc.

I showed him how to use the computer to shut down.....and told him not to have SO many windows open......

Perhaps that will help.  I also downloaded the AVG virus protection  - I wanted to get him the AT&T free protection, but he doesn't know his user name and password.

I wrote it down and told him to ask them next time he talks to them.....and also check what his download speed is to make sure he gets the FREE protection......

This afternoon I need to prepare music for a church service I’m playing tomorrow, while keeping a close eye on the weather.

The snow that’s part of the big storm moving across the northeast really needs to get in and out as quickly as possible so that I can easily get out of my driveway in the morning. We don’t need a LOT, and we don’t need it LATE, thank you very much.

Listening to the new album from the Who, appropriately titled Who. It's fun, nostalgic and it has a classic lyric about aging called Rockin' in Rage. The tempos are a slower than before. Daltry's voice is not as impressive as it used to be. But the Townshend style is still there musically.

I didn't expect as much as it delivered.

Yes I would not go walking in this weather with any amount of clothing. But for us 36F is warm. I wouldn't even need a hat. :)

The frigid temps actually weren't too bad. It wasn't windy.

The damp & the wind make it worse.  When I walked in -40 degree weather in Michigan it took me half an hour to layer on enough clothes to go outside.

Well, the concert was interesting. The audience loved the Lloyd Webber, which I thought sounded a mush when orchestrated for a full symphony. The added strings just sounded like noise. Only the percussion and brass showed well.

Mauer did a crowd-pleasing version of Music of the Night, which had the audience on its feet. The finale was from the Philharmonic's My Favorite Leading Ladies show with Julie Andrews. Mauer sang "Love Changes Everything," Mauzey sang "Unexpected Song" and then Debbie sang "I Don't Know How to Love Him" before they all sang together.

I'm chilling to an oddity, Fritz Lang's The Tiger of Eschnapur. This may be the first color film of Lang's that I remember seeing. It's filmed in India and stars Debra Paget speaking in German. There's a sequel in the set called The Indian Tomb.

I really like that trio.

Last year, PBS showed a one-hour special, The International Jazz Day Global All-Star Concert from St Petersburg, Russia, originally recorded in 2018.

I recorded it mainly because The Manhattan Transfer performed on it...even though they performed only one song.

But, I found out that PBS only showed about half the concert!

At some point, I wondered if any of it was on YouTube, and it turns out that the whole 2-hour concert was on YouTube!

The Manhattan still only performed their one song, but still, it's the whole concert!

Here's an article about the concert...Letter From Saint Petersburg (https://jazztimes.com/features/columns/letter-from-saint-petersburg/).  "In 2018, International Jazz Day brings the beyond-politics cultural diplomacy of the U.N. to Russia."

Ms. Paget is displaying her skills in an extended musical number that had to be cut to pass the Hays Code. She's at the based of a gargantuan fertility goddess wearing little but beads with a giant red stone strategically placed over her golden bikini bottom. A few pelvic thrusts, a few shimmies and, well, her audience is ready to do anything she wants. Captivating.

Then I got Subway for lunch and dinner (one foot-long for lunch, one six-inch for dinner), ate the foot-long, had our stumble-through, which was fun, found out we are VERY light for tomorrow's show, which is infuriating, have been doing some clean-up on the book (style things), and relaxing.

An Amana. Same as the last one, which lasted 20 years.

20 years, wow.

George, what does it do when you double “BOLD” something?

No Scarlett Strallen or Hugh Panero. Alli Mauzey, a former Glinda, and Gary Mauerare singing. Both good, Debbie Gravitte better.

What happened to Hugh?

Most of the concerts shown on PBS do not include all of the concert.  A lot of times they release the unedited version as one of their fund raising jifts.

I am reading a strange little book on my Kindle.  It is called TIMEWRECK TITANIC.  It is kind of like those fan fiction books that people write about their favorite fictional characters.  Only in this case, it is the ship that is the fan favorite.

Well, I finished my Blu-ray of the International Jazz Day Concert and it look great!  You'd think that it was good enough to be commercially made...except for the menus.  I have no idea how a professional would put that together.
