Title: MUSIC AND LAUGHTER
Post by: bk on January 26, 2020, 12:19:11 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had music and laughter, and now it is time for you to post until the music and laughter cows come home.

Just before I went to post the notes, the computer just shut down - freaky and weird.  Just a little pop-up that said "Your computer shut down because of a problem and will restart automatically."  It did, but I will never understand why it does that kind of thing.

That is just weird.  My computer (fortunately) has only shut down when there's an update that needs a restart, but I have the option to not have it restart until I'm ready.  I would hate to have it restart when I'm in the middle of several things, like I am right now.

To continue from last night...I had otherwise seen Bette's character Delores Del Lago's last name spelled:  de Lago, deLago, De Lago and Delago, and I wanted to have it spelled correctly.  I don't know if Del Lago is really the way that Bette preferred to spell it, but it was the only commercially released product that I found that showed any spelling of the name.  I can't find my DVD right now, so I don't know if that even has it on it, but since I've burned the Blu-ray, it is what it is.

DR JRand69, I enjoyed your chart.  It seems I am the year of the Dog. That chart bodes well for 2020 so I hope that means the Ohio property finally sells, I start working more regularly, and that the Orange Slug Squatting in the White House gets put out.

The Triumph of Love seems a million years ago, but it was a landmine of bickering and betrayals.  It had two tryouts: Baltimore Center Stage (I think) and then the Yale Rep before Broadway.  The composer did not want the orchestrator Margo Lion and the lyricist were pushing on him, and he wanted me.  He contacted me after he felt the "orchestrator," who's quite good with rhythm charts, wasn't working out, but Ms Lion continually rejected me and put me down.  She was quite ugly.  Once I was out of the picture, the original orchestrator quit, and I do not remember who took over.  It wasn't Bruce Coughlin.

Then, when the show went to Yale, the MD, Patrick Brady, called me to work on it, but I was committed to something else, and that was the end of my involvement.  After the Yale production, three actors were dropped by Ms Lion in and replaced by F. Murray Abraham, Betty Buckley, and Kevin Chamberlin.  I know two of them, and they are still bitter about it.

And there was a lot more warfare and betrayal going on as well behind the scenes, one of the reasons there are songs by other writers.

That’s one hell of a story, DR Elmore.

I didn't want to go into the other battles on The Triumph of Love which did not affect me, like why other song writers ended up working on the show.

In 1998 I was working on restoring the original 1938 scores for The Boys from Syracuse for the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization and Encores! when Charlie Harmon who was working with Leonard Bernstein's publishing company asked me to orchestrate On the Town for Central Park. I had to turn it down because of my other commitment, and I recommended Bruce Coughlin since I knew he had done other work for the Bernstein company.  That was how Margo Lion heard his work and asked him to orchestrate The Triumph of Love for Broadway.  A year later, Charlie asked me to orchestrate Candide for the National Theatre of Great Britain and I accepted.  Charlie went on vacation, and when he returned, he had to tell me that Bernstein's business manager Harry Kraut had replaced me with . . .

Bruce Coughlin.

I'm up, I'm up - maybe four hours of sleep and certainly a terrible night.  I didn't know what was happening, frankly, but I could not fall asleep, I had extreme discomfort and then it turned into a full-blown allergy attack, which was weird because I'd taken a twenty-four hour Claritin-D early in the day that should have still been working.  I took another and eventually I fell asleep.  Not quite sure how I'll get through this day and I'm really irritated that after rehearsal I have to kill four hours and go back to record what in essence is thirty seconds of stuff.

Back from a really good run-through.  Only about four calls for lines.  I gave notes, added a couple of tiny bits of business, and came home.  I have to be back in three hours, but won't be there too long.  I'm gonna sit on the couch like so much fish and hopefully doze off.

Scandalous is right up there.

I did not care for that CD.

And Metropolis sucked. Even with the excellent vocals of Judy Kuhn.

That does have one good song, "You Are the Light."  I sang that as part of an AIDS benefit, so it has great sentimental value for me.

Time to listen to something better, like Bed and Sofa.

That is a good one...kinda strange, but good.

Well, there isn't...yet...but there is a novelization (https://www.amazon.com/dp/1250318807/). ;D

Oh, my goodness!  There's also a soundtrack (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JK2FNCQ/)!  I think I need to get this!

Where is everyone?

I actually took a shower and went out today.  I went to Panda Express for dinner, and then Costco.  I ended up buying a pair of pants from Costco, just because.
I have never had good luck finding clothes at Costco.  I did buy a pair of earrings once when they had a special line of jewelry for the day.  They were more fun and casual then the jewelry I normally see there.

Tonight we watched Motherless Brooklyn.   Unlike Bruce it kept our interest right from the beginning.   As the story progressed it kept getting better.

I rarely buy clothes from Costco, but I know that for pants, they just have to be the right size and they'll fit.

I am very difficult to fit.  I wouldn't buy pants but I have looked at other clothing.

Recording was really fun, as it turned out.  We got some blind kids to do it (the show is about a legally blind girl) and I found them wonderful and so positive.  We're going to try and have them come to the show.  The show is a talking play and while the visuals I've made are nice, they'll understand the play just from hearing it.

That's really cool, BK.  Hope they can go and hope they enjoy it!

Doug has been insistent that the girl at either age should be seen using a blind cane and I've been resistant to it.  Most of the scenes are in locations she knows well, so it doesn't make sense.  It finally boiled down to her first scene as an adult on her first day of teaching school.  But as I told him today, he has written the scene in such a way that if she walks in with a cane there's literally no scene to play.  And I think he finally "got" it and saw I was right.  He just wanted the audience to instantly know she's some kind of blind, but they do - you have to trust that the audience is not dumb, plus they'll certainly know it in the first thirty seconds because we find out for sure when a male teacher she goes to talk to discovers it.

And the one other scene is when she goes to visit her old man friend by walking to his house - that, at least made sense, but I tried it and it just doesn't look good.  In fact, I'd say it harms what we're doing.  He wrote a lovely play, a memory play, and so everything is filtered and diffused as she listens to cassettes of herself talking, an aural diary, and we see the scenes as she remembers them.  And my point all along is that nothing should be "real" but "remembered".  So, we have three realistic set pieces - a couch, a teacher's desk, and her bay window where she records.  And I wanted those realistic because they are the touchstones of her life.  Everything else comes out of darkness into the light, and everything is delineated by light.  That's been my take on this from day one and it really works and he loves it.  So, the cane is, thankfully, gone.

What’s the dullest musical you’ve ever seen?

That is a tough one, but THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD ranks right near the top.

"When We Rise" is eight hours (including commercials), so I may need to split it over two discs.  We'll see how large the files sizes are once I put them into the Blu-ray burning software.

When We Rise (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5292622/reference) is "A chronicled re-telling of the gay rights movement in the United States, beginning with the Stonewall riots in 1969."
