Wagon Train's Robert Horton was my favourite TV star of the era. And I loathed Westerns! Maybe I didn't watch that much TV! I did like Connie Stevens as Cricket Blake. The psychiatrist in M.A.S.H. was also a favourite. Loretta Switt was also terrific. (I found Miss Piggy to be much in the same mould). From my earlier years - Annette, Tommy Kirk and Tim Considine.

Good morning, all! It's a rainy day in New York, and I want to hibernate. Instead, I have the recording office most of the day, then I'm need to drop off the score for George Dvorsky with the producer and a bit later, I have a date with the ever-lovely Liz Callaway.
Favorites from tv's golden age: a lot of the Warner Bros crowd: Connie Stevens, Diane McBain, Van Williams, Efrem Zimbalist Jr, Donna Reed. There were so many!

Yucky day here (weather-wise). Glad the happening happened last weekend and not this weekend.
We must hie over to Footlight at lunch so Anthony can purchase a difficult to find CD full of British music hall songs. He doesn't need the CD since he will learn the music at rehearsal but he wants to have something to listen to so he will be familiar with the music when he starts to learn it this week.
We had a quiet but pleasant Easter dinner of pork chops, green beans and wild rice with goodies from the Easter basket after dinner. Too much candy in the house!
We watched Teacher's Pet over the weekend. Not the Doris Day movie but the animated story about a dog who wants to be a boy. It was a cute diversion filled with all sorts of adult references that would fly by a child, for example the school is named FDR which is not Franklin Delano Roosevelt but Fala Delano Roosevelt, Fala being the famous dog of FDR.

Good morning all!! I had a splendidly splendid weekend, and the weather cooperated by being splendidly splendid as well.
I have not caught up since I posted Friday night so I will attempt to do so over the course of the day, althought I have a busy day scheduled herde at the old workplace so I shall see how much sneaking in I can get in.

Thank you Ben for accompanying me on the drive in to work this morning, well your voice at least! DR Ben was kind enough to gift me with a CD copy of the theatre reviews he does for the BBC Radio. It made very entertaining listening and I am looking forward to volume Two!!

Daniel Davis "let go" from LA CAGE. Robert Goulet to take over.
Now, I'm as big a Goulet fan as anyone I know, but Lewis was the heart and soul of LA CAGE. His performance was the only transcendant thing about the show. Not sure what the story behind him being "let go" is (vs just announcing that he is leaving), but I shall endeavor to find out!

Well, at last Easter is over. Ah, the decorations, gifts, the cheer and merriment, the whirlwind of parties. But now all is settling down. I've made my Easter resolutions and am ready to start a new year.

Wow, I guess the gossip is true. It mentions at Playbill On-Line via The NY Post "that Davis was let go from the revival after the Sunday matinee, reportedly due to clashes with his co-star, Gary Beach, who plays Albin, and other members of the company."

That's too bad because Davis was the only real reason to see the show. It's a decent revival but nothing exciting or special about it. Oh, to be a fly on the wall.

Saturday, my Mom, the Vixter & I drove into NYC and visited the infamous American Girl Place, where they squeezed us in for lunch....
I had a delicious Fetticini dish made with cream sauce and lots of asparagus and mushrooms...very nice....they give everyone a hot cinnnamon bun and a platter with grapes, cheese, carrot & celery sticks, a vegatable dip and thick cut cucumber slices with a topping of some sort of cream cheese and vegatable mixture piped on top, then everyone gets a small chocolate cup filled with a vanilla cream custard, a small floerpot filled with chocolate mouse and a cugar cookie for dessert.
Then we left AMG with 20 minutes to spare until curtain time for Little Women and there was one of those bicycle rickshaw fellows right outside the door so we piled in and got to the Virginia Theater in a few minutes with only a slight, almost slow motion accident with a taxi who decide to squeeze by with not quite enough room....a bit nerve racking but no injuries other than a scratched fender for each of the vehicles

Inside word I've heard: Daniel Davis was an unpleasant dude who hated the show and didn't get along with anyone involved with it.
Sad, I thought he was Tony-worthy.

I was hoping that wasn't the case (re: Davis being unpleasant) because I've seen him in many things and I think he's a wonderful actor. Oh, well. Another actor with feet of clay.
If he doesn't like the show why did he take the role? Maybe he ran through his Nanny nest egg.

I had heard Daniel Davis was very difficult to work with in the show, and there were definite tensions backstage.
I think Goulet is very canny casting, much in the Gene Barry tradition. And he is certainly more of a box-office name for middled aged and older patrons than Daniel Davis was.

About the discussion of CHARIOTS OF FIRE last night:
I loathed that film. I was outraged that it won the Best Picture that year. Any of the other nominees would have been a better choice (ATLANTIC CITY, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, ON GOLDEN POND, REDS).
What I really disliked was how dishonest it was. It made the strawberry haired American racer (played by Dennis Christopher) who is defeated in the race a braggart and egocentric lout when that was not historically accurate. Also, they focused on that one race that he lost closely while ignoring the fact that he won THREE gold medals in that Olympics beating the Brits in the 200 yard dash and two relays.

Well, I was surprised by the European time change. The Sondheim program I mentioned earlier (on BBC Radio 3) is being broadcast as I type. I forgot that DST happens a week earlier and the program began at 10am EST. Oh, well, I will just listen to it later today since it's almost over (10:43am here).
Rod, I agree, I thought he would at least be nominated for a Tony.

Sorry to be so E&T lately, but it has been awfully busy here at work. Can't sign on as much as I had been doing.

On the TOD: I believe my faves have already been mentioned, but MTM, Eve Arden, Jack Benny are all at the top of the list. As some liked Robt Horton, I believe Robt Conrad was also an eyeful in whatever dreary Western he was on. Agnes Moorehead and Miss Montgomery. (with a strong vote for Marion Lorne, but we're not talking supporting women. Today. For a change. ;) ) Mr. Van Dyke, and though a scootch later than the parameters allow, Mr. Tony Randall. I am sure I will think of more later.

Well I think Arch Hall as THE SADIST is pretty darn scary. And the ending was whack!
As I was watching EE-GAH and WILD GUITAR again, I finally decided that Arch was probably giving a performance a lot like I would have when I was 16 years old.

Hello. I woke up this morning and felt like I had to throw up, but luckily I didn't. I have spent the entire morning in bed and I am going to try to make my way over to the Health Center to see what's wrong and get myself an excuse so I can make up the test I was supposed to take in one of my classes this morning.
Easter was good. Lot's of fmaily and good food.

I've been merrily proofing away. I had an e-mail from a popular website asking for details about the Guy Haines album and the label it will be on - I told them to be patient and give me a few weeks. The word is out, I guess.

I was always a big fan of Clint Walker's CHEYENNE as a kid and Anne Francis as HONEY WEST was terribly sexy to a young adolescent boy. Even hotter was Diana Rigg; and I always wanted to be the dapper, unflappable John Steed...who was the epitome of class to me. I also liked Gene Barry in BURKE'S LAW. And Jock Mahoney as YANCY DERRINGER. And let us not forget the yummy Irish McCalla as SHEENA, QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE. Hubba-hubba!
The one time I met Daniel Davis in our local bistro, he couldn't have been nicer. I was with Larry Drake and Davis was with some friend of Larry's. Introductions were made all round and I proceeded to tell Davis that he was the best HAMLET I had ever seen (and he was!)...which had been years ago at the Cincinnati Playhouse-In-The-Park.
The production was directed by none other than Word Baker (of Fantastiks fame) who was the artistic director of the Playhouse at the time and whom I had known slightly during my college years...at the time of this Hamlet. In fact, Baker appeared at a theatre conference down in Lexington about the time and we were asked to bring scenes for him to re-direct. We did a cutting of Hamlet. I played Hamlet. Baker re-directed me according to the blocking he had used in his Davis production, which I had just recently seen. Baker told me I took direction very well.
Anyway, I still have vivid memories of that Hamlet and conveyed several of these to Davis and we joked about some of the casting from the production and had a pleasant chat about it. Maybe he was nice simply because I was so flattering about his Hamlet. I mean how often do you meet someone in a restaurant 25 years later and they tell you you were the best Hamlet they ever saw from a regional theatre production?

Pogue, re: Daniel Davis, that's good to hear. I read an "official" press release about Goulet coming in and the only reference to Davis is "We wish the talented Daniel Davis well in his future endeavors" Who knows (I'm sure some do) the real story. I still think Davis is a great actor and I'm glad he's come back to the theatre.

I'm sorry I've been errant and truant lately, but it's midterm season, and we all know what that means. It's mostly over now, but I have to do a facilitation in a couple hours in my IAAAAWWOTD class. I'm in denial about it. I find that usually helps.

Nice turkey pictures Jane..we just get a lot of sparrows, redwinged blackbirds, pigeons, mockingbirds, the occasional cardinal and the occasional blue jay and lots of seagulls!! Oh and we have a couple of red headed woodpeckers. Lots of gray squirrels, the occasional black squirrel. A raccoon or a possum will wander through occasionally and of course there are always stray cats

I remember thinking it was odd, when they did the Broadway Cares fundraising after the curtain call, it was Bryan Batt (the understudy for Albin) and Michael Mulheren (Edouard Dindon) who did the spiel. Wondered where Georges was for that...

It's been the same way here all day. Started out with bright sunshine and blue skies. By midmorning, it had clouded over and looked like rain. By noon, the blue sky was back with nice puffy clouds. As I type here at 4:07, it's as gray as can be. Hasn't gotten out of the 50s.

Enjoyed the first 8 episodes from the season 2 set of GREEN ACRES. It was in episode 2 of the second season that they began the running gag of the actors seeing and being confused by the credits that were running over their action. They are totally silly, ridiculous plots, but that's the fun. It's so outrageous and unbelievable that it makes THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES seem realistic.

I saw about half of last night's DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES before coming upstairs to do my afternoon web surf. I have it to finish and last night's DEADWOOD to watch at some point soon.

I've been reading Ethan Mordden's Happiest Corpse I've Ever Seen, covering the last 25 years of Broadway history. I'll let others vent on how accurate it is. What amazes/amuses me is the reviews posted over at Amazon; I was expecting a cover-to-cover right wing diatribe from the write-ups Mordden has received. Instead I'm finding those reviews to be a total misrepresentation of his work (with the exception of a letter written by someone I consider a friend, but that letter is about accuracy in reporting and is very politely stated).
Mordden's basic thesis is that Broadway is going downhill because the audiences are becoming too lazy to listen and think. Personally, I think that is true not just of theater, but of a large percentage of the arts. It's not an encouraging prospect.
Exactly how I'm going to get der Brucer to read the tome himself, instead of jumping to all sorts of conclusions based on the snippets I've been reading to him...well, I haven't figured out hot to handle that challenge.

Happy day after Easter everyone!
Totally exhausting weekend. Kids will do that to you. The kids (4 and 9) stayed at my sister (and her husband's house) this weekend (along with their parents (the kids' mom is my sister's husband's sister). Anyhow Easter Egg day (as the 4 yr old boy calls it) went very well.
On Saturday I was telling the 4 yr old that he had to go to a birthday party the next day. He looked at me and proclaimed, "but how can he have a birthday on easter egg day?". So cute!
Yesterday we all went to see MISS CONGENIALITY 2 (which i thought was very funny and much better than the reviews) and while the 4 yr old and I were alone he told me "do not talk to me" :(
He was holding a grudge from the day before when he was talking about "Juan" in HARRY POTTER and I could understand him (he was saying Ron).
Afterwards he proclaimed that I was "mean". :(
I asked if there was anything I could do to make him not mad at me and told me "no". :(
But luckily he forgot about it all that night. And then last night he finally forgave me and we played games. Yeah. :(

Finally got my new shipment of Nudie Musical DVDs, which Image has been out of for at least three months, and hence the DVD has been impossible to find at amazon or anywhere else. As they said, this new pressing does not include the CD, so those that bought the first pressing now have a rarity.

Just finished reading the liner notes for the Arch Hall Jr. CD...it was very interesting. What fun that whole group of people had, and I have to hand it to Arch Hall Sr. for his initiative!

Actually Robert Stack never made it into the first production. During rehersal it was decided things weren't working out and he quietly left. I do remember a full page add with him standing in the middle of Broadway in front of the Palace announcing his return to Broadway.

Senator Bill Frist, the Harvard-educated heart surgeon with presidential aspirations, announced that watching videos of Ms. Schiavo had persuaded him that her doctors in Florida were mistaken about her vegetative state - a remarkable diagnosis given that he had not only failed to examine the patient ostensibly under his care but has no expertise in the medical specialty, neurology, relevant to her case. No less audacious was Tom DeLay, last seen on "60 Minutes" a few weeks ago deflecting Lesley Stahl's questions about his proximity to allegedly criminal fund-raising by saying he would talk only about children stranded by the tsunami. Those kids were quickly forgotten as he hitched his own political rehabilitation to a brain-damaged patient's feeding tube. Adopting a prayerful tone, the former exterminator from Sugar Land, Tex., took it upon himself to instruct "millions of people praying around the world this Palm Sunday weekend" to "not be afraid."
The president was not about to be outpreached by these saps. The same Mr. Bush who couldn't be bothered to interrupt his vacation during the darkening summer of 2001, not even when he received a briefing titled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.," flew from his Crawford ranch to Washington to sign Congress's Schiavo bill into law. The bill could have been flown to him in Texas, but his ceremonial arrival and departure by helicopter on the White House lawn allowed him to showboat as if he had just landed on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

All this is happening while polls consistently show that at most a fifth of the country subscribes to the religious views of those in the Republican base whom even George Will, speaking last Sunday on ABC's "This Week," acknowledged may be considered "extremists." In that famous Election Day exit poll, "moral values" voters amounted to only 22 percent. Similarly, an ABC News survey last weekend found that only 27 percent of Americans thought it was "appropriate" for Congress to "get involved" in the Schiavo case and only 16 percent said it would want to be kept alive in her condition. But a majority of American colonists didn't believe in witches during the Salem trials either - any more than the Taliban reflected the views of a majority of Afghans. At a certain point - and we seem to be at that point - fear takes over, allowing a mob to bully the majority over the short term. (Of course, if you believe the end is near, there is no long term.)

Next to what's happening now, official displays of DeMille's old Ten Commandments monuments seem an innocuous encroachment of religion into public life. It is a full-scale jihad that our government signed onto last weekend, and what's most scary about it is how little was heard from the political opposition. The Harvard Law School constitutional scholar Laurence Tribe pointed out this week that even Joe McCarthy did not go so far as this Congress and president did in conspiring to "try to undo the processes of a state court." But faced with McCarthyism in God's name, most Democratic leaders went into hiding and stayed silent. Prayers are no more likely to revive their spines than poor Terri Schiavo's brain.

Inside word I've heard: Daniel Davis was an unpleasant dude who hated the show and didn't get along with anyone involved with it.
Sad, I thought he was Tony-worthy.
So, since the show has already opened, is it safe to assume that the Tony voters have already seen the show? When do the Tony nominating committee see a show? Opening night? Some time after that? Would his leaving after being in the show more than three months affect if they actually nominate him or not? Would/could this be a case like in Company when Dean Jones left and Larry Kert was nominated? I know it's not Ask Question Wednesday, but inquiring minds want to know! ;)

No, I don't think Goulet would qualify for a TOny nomination. Since Davis is not going to be in the show at the time the nominations are made, his chances of winning should he get a nomination would be slim to none, but the nominating committee surely saw him. It's the voters who wouldn't be able to if they hadn't already.
The case of Kert was very different. Jones only played two weeks, and Kert was his standby. LA CAGE has been open much longer than that.

As Matt H. said, La Cage has been running quite a long time. It opened in December. It's been running far too long for any replacement to even be considered. The whole Larry Kert/Dean Jones thing was a special circumstance that was dealt with by the Tony committee. Hal Prince discusses the whole issue in his book. I think, though I may be mistaken, Craig Zadan writes about it also in Sondheim and Company.
At this point, Robert Goulet is a replacement in a (somewhat) long running show. Gary Beach will most likely be nominated. I don't know about Davis. Certainly, I don't think anyone else in the show will be nominated. If Davis had stayed with the show, I think he would have been nominated, even if he wasn't getting along with his co-star. Those are my thoughts on the matter. Now I must run away for a few minutes and try to come back by 8:30 for a few minutes in chat.
Those of you who have never chatted before, get your typing fingers ready. It can get fast and furious in there ;-)

Between 5-7 PM PST we had a "bargain" dinner at Cafe Zeus - buy one get one free. The tab was a very modest NOT $140. G-d, good taste is expensive.

Officials at Miami-based Burger King Corp. (search) said that healthier choices are also available, but surveys showed customers wanted bigger sandwiches.

Fifty-six percent of the cities report that emergency food assistance facilities may have to turn away people in need because of lack of resources. Forty percent of cities said emergency food assistance programs were not able to provide an adequate quantity of food. Fifty-two percent of the survey cities report that emergency food assistance facilities have had to decrease the quantity of food provided and/or the number of times families or individuals can come to get food.

Dinner tonight was very nice, indeed. We both had roast duck for the entree, which was served on a bed of wild and brown rice, with a pleasant bourbon sauce and roasted apples.
Der Brucer started with escargot, something I've never been able to stomach. Snails is snails, and I'm not going there. I, on the other hand, had a soup of pureed spinach and sweet green peppers, which tasted wonderfully green.
Dessert was cheesecake, which Charles makes himself. I had his award-winning chocolate mocha cheesecake, der B had the lemon with raspberry sauce.
And we dished with Charles and his staff about some of the other restaurants in town.
That's why der Brucer wasn't there for chat tonight.

I headed on over to Beale Street, and settled into a table at Beale Street Blues - I think. In any case, I had some tamales and a bowl of chili. Very good. The ribs looked good, but I'll have my Rendezvous Ribs later in the week. I passed on dessert there. Of course, now I'm craving chocolate. And there's no candy machine here in the hotel. :( Ah, well..
The hotel is in a very nice location. About a 10 minute walk from the theatre and Beale Street. The trolley line is right outside the front door. Lots of great places to eat nearby - cheap eats and not so cheap eats. I'm gonna have to check out "Memphis Grits" sometime this week. And it's right next door to "The Peanut Shoppe" which I've seen featured on FoodTV a couple of times. They roast their nuts in-house - and the exhaust is fed right out onto the sidewalk. They also "oil roast" some of their nuts - frying them in oil! I'll most likely pick up a bag or two of goodies before heading to the theatre for sound check.

I listened to the amusing Mr. Kimmel on Donald's radio show. Highly entertaining.
I've been sucked into the DaVinci Code the last couple of days. While I find the thriller part somewhat standard, the historical mystery that forms the basis of it is fascinating.
SLIGHT SPOILER AHEAD!
I did know a lot about the historical aspects (like that the Christian religion was pretty much cobbled together with councils and votes and stealing and perverting rituals and aspects from various pagan religions), but the parts about DaVinci and other elements come as a bit of surprise. I'll never look at his LAST SUPPER the same way again...if I had ever really look at it before...

Lucille Ball, hands down. The "All In The Family" group. And, subsequently, "Maude", Bea Arthur. And the show may not have been "golden", but I was - and still am - a fan of "Good Times". The funny episodes were funny, and the serious turns it took were pretty serious.

*Oh, and I remember Suzanne Sommers singing a medley of TV theme songs on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson". It was first time I ever understood all the word to the "Good Times" theme song. Or was it "The Jeffersons"?

Tips for Travelling in the South
1) Don’t order filet mignon or pasta primavera at Waffle House. It’s just
a diner. They serve breakfast 24 hours a day. Let them cook something they
know. If you confuse them, they’ll kick your ass.
2) Don’t laugh at our Southern names (Merleen, Luther, Tammy Lynn, Inez,
Billy Joe, Sissy, Clovis, etc.) or we will just HAVE to kick your ass.
3) Don’t order a bottle of pop or a can of soda down here. Down here it’s
called Coke. Nobody cares whether it’s Pepsi, RC, Dr.
Pepper, 7-Up or whatever… it’s still a Coke. Accept it. Doing otherwise
can lead to an ass kicking.
4) We know our heritage. Most of us are more literate than you (e. g.
Welty, Williams, Faulkner). We are also better educated and generally a
lot nicer. Don’t refer to us as a bunch of hillbillies or we’ll kick your
ass.
5) We have plenty of business sense (e. g., Fred Smith of Fed Ex, Sam
Walton, Turner Broadcasting, MCI WorldCom, MTV, Netscape). Naturally, we
do, sometimes, have small lapses in judgment (e. g. John Edwards, Al Gore,
Bill Clinton, David Duke). We don’t care if you think we are dumb. We are
not dumb enough to let someone move to our state in order to run for the
Senate. If someone tried to do that, we would kick his/her ass.
6) Don’t laugh at our Civil War monuments. If Lee had listened to
Longstreet and flanked Meade at Gettysburg instead of sending Pickett up
the middle, you’d be paying taxes to Richmond instead of Washington. If
you visit Stone Mountain and complain about the carving, we’ll kick your
ass.
7) We are fully aware of how high the humidity is, so shut the hell up.
Just spend your money and get the hell out of here, or we’ll kick your
ass.
8 ) Don’t order wheat toast at Cracker Barrel. Everyone will instantly know
that you’re a Yankee. Eat your biscuits like God intended with gravy. And
don’t put sugar on your grits, or we’ll kick your ass.
9) Don’t fake a Southern accent. This will incite a riot, and you will get
your ass kicked.
10) Don’t talk about how much better things are at home because we know
better. Many of us have visited Northern hellholes like Detroit, Chicago,
and DC, and we have the scars to prove it. If you don’t like it here,
Delta is ready when you are. Move your ass on home before it gets kicked.
11) Yes, we know how to speak proper English. We talk this way because we
don’t want to sound like you. We don’t care if you don’t understand what
we are saying. All other Southerners understand what we are saying, and

12) Don’t complain that the South is dirty and polluted. None of OUR lakes

doors open for others. We offer our seats to old folks because such things
are expected of civilized people. Behave yourselves around our sweet

14) So you think we’re quaint, or losers, because most of us live in the
countryside? That’s because we have enough sense to not live in filthy,
smelly, crime infested cesspools like New York, Baltimore or Boston. Make

15) Last, but not least, DO NOT DARE to come down here and tell us how to
cook barbecue. This will get your ass shot (right after it is kicked).
