Today, I'm taking the day off from work so that I can go to my parents' to help move some furniture.  My mom bought my dad a new easy chair (I think) and we have to move some stuff out of the way.  Since the chair (or whatever) is being delivered sometime today, my mom wanted help today instead of Monday, even though that's a holiday and I get the day off anyway.  Oh, well.  It'll be fine.  And she's making tacos for lunch, so that'll be good. :)

TOD

Practically nothing, sorry to say, but last night just to stare at something silly while eating, I watched an old DVD of Stephen King’s GRAVEYARD SHIFT. Oy! I’d never seen it, and I guess it was okay for what it was, but what it was isn’t much. An obvious story, once you’ve seen the first scene. And acting? Well, the “Maine” accents steal the show, and that’s not necessarily good news. Fine set design, though, in creating the creepiest, filthiest mill/factory ever.

Last night we began a 1985 BBC version of Oliver Twist, with Eric Porter as Fagin.  Each episode is 30 minutes, and there are 12 episodes.  The cast is good, and this appears to be the only adaptation to cover nearly every incident and character in the original novel, which I read around 1974.  Porter's Fagin is not as creepy as Alec Guinness in the wonderful 1948 David Lean film.

Up until 4-5 years ago, JOLSON was my most popular one-person stage play.  Since 1984, it had had many productions all over the USA.

Then, because of “political correctness,” those productions stopped.  Indeed, some that were scheduled were even cancelled.

Since Al Jolson and the songs he made famous continue to remain popular, I’ve written a new one-person play that deals with the “World’s Greatest Entertainer,” incorporates his most celebrated songs, yet eliminates the primary element that made my original play “controversial”.

It centers on Larry Parks, who played Al Jolson in both THE JOLSON STORY and JOLSON SINGS AGAIN, and faced his own personal problems with “The Hollywood Blacklist”.

“LARRY PARKS aka: AL JOLSON” is available in both paperback and Kindle editions via Amazon and elsewhere.  Performance rights are available.

That is good.  This reminded me of something. Last week I needed some hairspray. But ended up having to do something that I don't think is very nice. I had to spray it in my hair in the store (even though it wasn't a sample).  I just had to make sure that the smell wouldn't make me sick. Thankfully i bought the one that I sampled.

DR TCB did you get to hear the director's friend read the role? Was she actually better than your friend?  I"m sure that nobody wants to make a fuss (especially anyone who is cast). But if the friend was pre-cast (but it wasn't said beforehand because they aren't allowed to do that) ... well that is just crappy. :(

Re the alarms:
I turn all my devices off before I go to bed. I have enough trouble sleeping as it is. I also prefer an old-fashioned battery-operated alarm clock. When I lived in the East I'd get calls to my landline right next to my bed at 3 am. It happened repeatedly. Someone mistakenly had my number as a fax number. Once when it happened I answered and spoke to him. I don't know where in the world he was calling from, but he spoke sufficient English and I explained that this was NOT a fax line, it was a private residence and the phone was next to my bed. It didn't happen again. But usually I got the mechanical tone of a fax machine. I was lucky I was able to talk to him.

We turn our cell phones off at night at no longer have a phone in our bedroom.  In the quiet of the night we can still hear the landline but it isn't as jarring & we don't have to go answer it.

The guest speaker for tonight's Planned Parenthood event was Armistead Maupin, and he was wonderful. He didn't read. He just spoke and then answered questions. But he was funny and serious and inspiring.

And it makes me want to read more of his books. He has a memoir out called Logical Family that sounds fascinating. It's about building your own family when your biological family treats you like crap.

Re-Opening Vibes for DR CHAS SMITH.

Re-arranging the furniture vibes for DR GEORGE.

Thanks, Jrand!  It had its moments, but we got done what we needed to.  We didn't have tacos, though.  Lasagna was the lunch, which was fine...and quite delish. ;D

That's pretty cool, Druxy.

You know, for a middle name, if she and Stella share a birthday, maybe they should share a name.  Frejya Stella.  Or Valentine for the day.
