Well, you've read the notes, the notes were disturbing due to the disturbing meatloaf, and now it is time for you to post until the disturbing cows come home.

As I posted at the end of the other thread: So, no one's gonna watch Doug's play?  I thought there was interest, but I guess not.

There is interest BK, but in my case, I was gone for most of the day, so I couldn't watch it yesterday.

You are supposed to be locked inside your home wearing a mask, gloves, and a surgical gown.  Well, I  hope someone watches it.  It's not like there's a lot of time on everyone's hands.  I have time on my hands, for example.

Oy! Did I have dreams last night!  In one I was about to perform a standup comedy act and totally unprepared.  Jason Graae was of course totally prepared and brilliant.  My goddaughter Charlotte's parents were there, and since I no longer communicate with my former best friend, it was awkward.
Title: Re: THE DISTURBING MEATLOAF
Post by: elmore3003 on March 28, 2020, 04:18:12 AM
In another, Jason Graae was living in this gigantic apartment and Eric Henwood-Greer and I were houseguests.  The apartment building was the old, now-torn-down Bundy apartments in Middletown OH, which were extremely haunted and completely ramshackle in the 1970s when I knew people living there.

I have never seen the film of Ship of Fools, but I read the novel it's based on in 1964.  It had been recently published to good reviews and I didn't much care for it,  My memory is that I read it before or just after I read Mary McCarthy's The Group, which I liked much more.

Yesterday morning Fed Ex rang my bell.  I was hoping it was the long-delayed Amazon package, but instead it was a post-surgery get well gift of a large number boxes of frozen chicken, pork, and beef from Omaha Steaks.  I called the person responsible and thanked her.  For dinner I had a yummilicious chicken breast smothered in mushrooms with peas and carrots.  I was quite content.

I just went to Amazon to buy more cans of Fancy Feast.  24 cans of Fancy Feast used to cost around $15.00 for 24 3 ounce cans, and that's six days of food.  This morning Amazon is charging double that amount for only 12 cans!

BK,

I totally agree with you on SHIP OF FOOLSBoring!

However, that film brings back some fond memories for me.

During the first year after I had moved to Hollywood (I was, probably, 22-23), a friend in the apartment building in which I lived, worked at Columbia Pictures, and one day, he got me onto the set of SHIP OF FOOLS.

Everybody was working that day: Vivien Leigh, Simone Signoret, Lee Marvin, Jose Ferrer, George Segal, Elizabeth Ashley...

I was in awe...specially when I saw who was sitting off to one side, watching Stanley Kramrer direct.

It was Spencer Tracy.

Eventually, somebody asked me who I was.  I didn't give the right answer, and I was asked to leave, but what a glorious memory.

DR ChasSmith, how are you getting on with Nashville?

Fabulously. I haven't gone back for my second viewing with Altman's commentary yet, but I ended up totally immersing myself in it otherwise the other day. Did you see my posts about it?

I can't remember if I reported on these extras, but Criterion's "Making Of" with the actors and crew from just several years ago is wonderful, and the longer Altman interview from the time of the film's release was fascinating. Interesting guy.
Title: Re: THE DISTURBING MEATLOAF
Post by: ChasSmith on March 28, 2020, 06:26:25 AM
I started watching Doug's play last night, but much later than I'd intended, so I told myself I'd watch up to the intermission point and then watch the second act today. But I forgot to review where BK had said the intermission was. I'd been thinking it was around the one hour mark. Finally, at 1:08, I went back to the notes and found I'd barreled right past it. I went back to what was, indeed, the last scene of Act 1, and of course that made sense.

So I'm happy to have watched the additional few scenes, but I was at the danger point where my eyes were starting to close so I still have the last forty minutes or so to watch today. Naturally, it proceeds splendidly, with a fine cast and very able direction. :)

Okay, this morning is something of a landmark -- I had to refresh the notes page on both the iPad and the MacBook. I think that's a first.

It's funny, because I don't remember to think about that before starting to read the notes. And when they generally make sense, even though they're a day old, I still don't think about it until, finally..."wait, I've read these exact words before!" :)  At which point I refresh, and all is well in Note Land for another day.

I have that double feature Blu-ray but have not ever watched Ship of Fools. Nor did I ever read the book. I've always had the distinct impression that what BK and Druxy said would be the case, but now I'm ready to enjoy it for all that's good about it. I've got to remember to take it off the shelf when I go downstairs, and then it'll eventually happen.

But the kicker for me was that BK had never seen Lilith. I hadn't, either, until that very Blu-ray came out several years ago and people on Home Theater Forum were talking about it. I watched and instantly loved it (but maybe that's overstating it, I don't know now), even though it seems like there might have been something a little off about it, plot wise or something. I might be confusing it with something else. I guess I'll have to rewatch that, too.

Gee, all this talk from me about actually watching things. It feels good to be doing that. I knew that part of my life would return to something close to normal following those last three shows I did. But credit where credit is due... I owe it even more to COVID-19 (sadly), because otherwise I'd be out many of these evenings and weekends playing the next couple of shows.

Yes, I think so.  She and her husband were joined at the hip, so to speak. They had been married 40 years. He was and still is devastated, so it's good for him to not come home to an empty house.  He takes his dogs with him everywhere, and that helps too. The other boys were also devastated, but they have their own families and I know they are finding comfort there.

I just watched with Thatch the first two episodes of Sanditon

Plenty of references to characters in other novels would tell you - if you didn't know - that it's a Jane Austen work, although in her novels the cruelty lying under the social veneer may be more subtle.  I like the cast, and I haven't minded the music so much this time.  The truly god-awful  score for a good adaptation of a 19th century novel is the BBC Vanity Fair from 1998.  Absolutely horrendous.

DR Vixmom I am relieved you were able to get your medication quickly.

I suggest ordering your refills ahead of the date.  By doing this I have slowly acquired an extra month of meds.

With my insurance you can only get a refill 5 days before you run out.  But in this case there weren't even any refills left so I couldn't just order one from the pharmacy.

My doctor must have submitted the new prescription immediately after I called and I guess with all the quarantining going on the insurance waived the 5 day rule, or maybe it didn't count because it was new prescription not a refill

Keep doing the 5 day rule.  It adds up after time.  If it is a new insurance vs a renewal, in my experience, it does not follow the 5 day rule.

Well, I guess the deal with Cheesecake Factory delivery is that you cannot book it the night before.  I happened to be on Door Dash and ready to order Mexican food, and I clicked on the Cheesecake Factory and ASAP was available, so I ordered my farfalle with roasted garlic, chicken, carmelized onions, peas, sundried tomatoes, in a cream sauce, the lunch-size portion, and twenty minutes later it arrived.  Really glad I didn't get the full portion or I'd be on the ground unable to move.  It was great and so was the bread that came with it - too many calories, but I needed a great meal after yesterday's fiasco.  I think I may do that once a week.

My osteopath called me this afternoon and we had a telephonic update. He received the email I sent him a few days ago, when I explained my total exasperation with his office staff. (Know nothing, tell nothing, NEVER get back to you.) He's working in Urgent Care these days and they've cancelled all his appointments. It would have been helpful if they'd explained that. They did offer a phone visit, but never followed up, so I emailed him directly. Everything is, of course, upside-down due to Covid, but all the staff would tell me was a brusque "Your appointment was cancelled" and that he was out of the office. Is he sick? Did he have an accident? Do I need to find another doctor? He's OK, but he did say that a lot of the patients he's seeing are testing positive. I didn't have a chance to ask if they were all showing symptoms, but I imagine most of them were or they wouldn't have come in.

I ran several errands. First, I tried to drop off a library book I’d finished, only to discover the drop boxes had been closed off because of the virus. It lives on paper. That likely means I can’t give any books away at the moment.

Right.  I have been reading that.  My brother says he has still been receiving automated notices books on hold can be checked out.  Of course the library is closed.

In my building, we have shelves for people to check out items that they had place holds on.  There were maybe three or four dozen items waiting to be checked out...some people left without checking them out and taking them with them.  ALL items that are checked out have been updated to not be due until May 1.  They could've had them all this time.  Of course, they may not have been at work when the closure happened, so there's that. ::)

The hereticVixdad  had catsup on his hotdogs and refused to countenance even the idea of sauerkraut coming into the vicinity of his catsup slathered franks

I am in complete agreement with Vixdad! ;D

Listening to music and I'm currently thinking about whether I want to become a serial killer.

Not if you are going to get pregnant.

I agree with Vixdad even though I don't eat hot dogs anymore.

Ha!  I'm not the only one!! ;)

I tried to send Annabelle's vet, the wonderful Dr Mohr, an update on her health, and I got a reply that she was out of the office till the end of April!

Oh, no!  Hopefully, she or someone will be checking her e-mail!

Yesterday, I reordered an item that I get regularly on Amazon.  I did the one-click purchase.  When the receipt popped up on email, I opened it to see when it would be delivered.  April 8 - 17.  What?

Not only that, but the price had gone up by $17.00.  Cancelled that order quickly.

I have a request.  If any one  of you finds a oral thermometer please buy it for me.  I’ve been looking for one for 2 weeks, the one I thought we had is broken

My friend Margo has also been looking for a thermometer for a couple of weeks and hasn't been able to find one, either. :-\

From the sublime to the ridiculous. I'm now watching Cannibal the Musical. It's really bad. Japanese samurai warriors have somehow entered the picture.

The original movie?  It's great! :D Trey Parker (of South Park) made it when he was in college.

I'm in agreement with everything except the things I'm not in agreement with, not necessarily in that order.

I'll take a shower in a little while, as there's nothing like taking a shower before getting in a bed with freshly laundered sheets.
