Title: DISCOVERING A CLASSIC
Post by: bk on March 31, 2020, 12:19:48 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were classic and discovered, and now it is time for you to post until the classic cows come home.

TOD:   For some reason, it took way too long for me to just watch "Sophie's Choice" all the  way through.
Title: Re: DISCOVERING A CLASSIC
Post by: Freddie on March 31, 2020, 01:19:01 AM
Is that too modern to be called a "classic" for the TOD?

Title: Re: DISCOVERING A CLASSIC
Post by: Freddie on March 31, 2020, 01:20:20 AM
Or maybe it's more that the performance is considered a classic than the whole movie in the case of "Sophie's choice."

I also have seen the classic "Nothing Sacred" in sections a lot over time, but never start to finish.  (For theater experts and even many Jule Styne fans: That's the story that became the musical "Hazel Flagg." )

Yet I watched its remake "Living It Up" (not considered a classic, but really enjoyable ) with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis a number of times.

BK - The actual Kerr "Cabaret" review is right here at this link, if you have any free Times  clicks left.  Otherwise, maybe a new free-click amount of Times articles starts for you on the 1st of the new month.

Here's the review.

I can't figure out how to cut and paste this.   Maybe someone else can send it to you or take a screen shot?

He says it is frustrating that once in a while, there are people who do not respect the six-feet-rule (or I guess even the two-feet rule, if there was one) and follow too closely even when it's mentioned.    This happened when he was entering the building at one point Monday.

Is it an actual foreign language cast album?  That would be cool...assuming that it's a foreign language cast album of a known musical. ;D

I'm amazed that there' are these fully-done good quality news shows for the audience at 4 in the morning.

Are they for insomniacs or for the 1 a.m. West Coast audience for whim 1 a.m. there is just late night TV?

I'm thinking about issuing a foreign cast album on CD, just for fun.

I love the Hebrew "King and I."which was co-translated by Naomi Shemer, one of the great Israeli writers we studied in school, and at least for the album, she matches Hammerstein with the beauty of language.  And really elevates "A Puzzlement" and :Shall I Tell You What I Think of You" somehow.  I'm not sure the more eloquent King in "Puzzlement" is correct based on what Hammerstein had created, but as a lyric,  she brings the magic she always brought to her own non-translation writing.

The Hebrew "Hello Dolly" has an emotional history,  in that the Dolly, Hanna Marron, was a while  later on her way to  be seen for Golde in the "Fiddler" film - and was apparently a leading candidate for the role - when her vehicle was bombed during the war.

She came back as a stage performer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanna_Maron even after losing her leg, and lived until 2014 at 90. - but that made a film career not happen.  She's said have one of the longest stage careers ever.

CNN's "Early Start" show at this hour ihas gotten as elaborate as its shows during the day.    I guess they'll re-use a lot of these segments during the high-viewing time, though.

I guess people who actually leave (in nirmaltimes) to work at 6 a.m. are a good market for advertisers too.

2.  I was at the Library of Congress.

Well, guess what else I just took off the shelf to watch.

ALL THE KING’S MEN. Which joins SHIP OF FOOLS in the watch pile. And these join NASHVILLE for a second look with the Altman commentary.

Based on BK’s report, I’m glad I bought that Twilight Time. And seriously, I have TTs and Criterions and too many other fine releases — many if not most of which would meet the definition of classic — that eluded me (or is it I who eluded them?) not only back in the day, but which have continued to do so right here on my shelf. It’s shameful. My list would be a long one. Well, let’s see what others confess to, and maybe I’ll have a go at it.

A couple of last night’s dreams were weird...

One had me and several friends being questioned by a cop as to why we were waiting in two parked cars outside another friend’s house at the beginnings of dawn. It was all very friendly.

The other is indescribable, even to mine own self. Something about this small animal that I think was a rare sea creature, and there was some kind of musical process going on that would result in a change of behavior in this creature...

Oy!

It was very interesting, that when Mom was in the hospital, we could talk about Skip, even look at the wedding photos, very freely no matter who was in the room.,

But in North Miami Beach, there's always an unspoken reminder that while Florida accepts gay marriage (nevus it ws forced to by the Supreme Court in 2013), bias based on being gay is still not illegal.

Sad news today, for those who liked or loved the works of children's author Tomie dePaola. He died yesterday, apparently from compilations following surgery after a fall.

It's so weird how I learned this, not ten minutes after coming across the files containing my materials for the show we did with him and Mother Dolores Hart at the Abbey a few summers ago. He was so nice to get to know for a few days, and we all had a fine time putting that show (a play with music) together.

I was literally just transferring a bunch of files from one drive to another, saw the folder containing my materials, and hadn't thought about that in a couple of years. A few minutes later, someone told me he died.

He says it is frustrating that once in a while, there are people who do not respect the six-feet-rule (or I guess even the two-feet rule, if there was one) and follow too closely even when it's mentioned.    This happened when he was entering the building at one point Monday.

At your building, that is exceptionally annoying.  I am glad Skip is improving.

Senior Shopping was not as crowded today.

I bought some bananas, ground beef [meatloaf is in the oven], cookies, TP for my sister, cookies, ice cream sandwiches, Lysol disinfectant spray.....and a few other things.....

I had wine in my cart....but it could not be purchased until 7:01 a.m. so it was left behind in the checkout stand orphan bin.....

Same here on the crowds.  It is still stressful.

No disinfectant, not that I can tolerate Lysol spray.  We got a 4 pack of TP and a 2 pack of paper towels.  I purchased a small coffee ice cream but they are still out of vanilla bean.

I take it back, they did have clorox toilet cleaner.

On the way home from Safeway, where we did get most of what we wanted, we stopped at Fred Meyer.  It too had fewer people today.  No santitizers of any kind.  I did get my eye drops and now don't have to worry about a delay in my delivery.  They didn't have any cleaning products we wanted.

I had seen he died but not what the cause was. :(

I wonder why I never think of buying Muenster. I used to always have it around for sandwiches and whatnot in California, and I don't think I've bought it once in my thirty years here.

I guess I love a nice imported Swiss and a good sharp cheddar too much to ever let them go.

I do not like Muenster. cheese.  If a restaurant offers it I ask if I can substitute Jack cheese if they have it.  Sharp cheddar is too sharp for me.  At home I purchase Colby/Jack to get the mix of Jack & mild cheddar.

Today I found the allergy mask I bought a couple years ago, but have never used. I knew it was in the linen closet, but the linen closet is the go-to place for everything that doesn't have a home. I was hoping to not have to pull everything out to find it. Fortunately, I found it without having to take out too much. When I bought it, of course, I had no idea we'd have to deal with a global pandemic. It's washable and adjustable, and should do the job.

It was hailing here, earlier this afternoon!  Then it was fairly sunny, then it rained again, and now it's just overcast with bits of sky peeking through as it gets darker.

I went to Fred Meyer yesterday and they had a couple of racks at the ends of a couple of aisles that had sample-sized hand sanitizers in various scents.  I got one with lavender scent and one with lemon and tea tree oil.  They both smell rather nice. :)

Good Luck, Larry!

Chinatown
Les Demoiselles de Rochefort
The Matchmaker
Zorba the Greek

I had defrosted some chicken today and as soon as I got home from work  I put it in to marinate in shiitake mushroom sesame seed dressing

By time I woke up at 8 it was nicely marinated and I cooked it up in a skillet with mushrooms.

And I steamed some broccoli and then tossed it in the skillet with some garlic, sesame seeds and red pepper flakes and a drop of the dressing

Listening to a German cast recording of Die Dreigroschenoper (3Penny Opera) with Rene Kollo as Macheath and Ute Lemper as Polly Peachum. I don't know that I've ever listened to it all the way through before (another dollar purchase). I really like it. And the diction is so good, I can understand a little of the German. Thankfully, the booklet has a German/English libretto side by side.

When 3Penny opened, Vienna had a hit with Lehar's Fridericke while London had Jesse Matthews singing Noel Coward's A Room with a View. Room for all, it seems.

Took a ten-minute drive.  A few cars on the road going who knows where.  Restaurants dark but my favorite little pizza joint was open so that's an option for a meal at some point, but not slices - would have to be a pie.

Food arrived thirty minutes early.  The salad I love I wouldn't order again - it's a bit soggy by the time it got here.  The pad Thai on the other hand is incredible.
Was the salad already tossed in the dressing?  If so you could ask for it on the side next time.

Every time I've gotten salads to go, the restaurants have automatically had the dressing on the side.  I've never had to ask. :-\

I was surprised the dressing was not on the side.

I don't think that there has been any deliveries since last week, so probably not until everything is opened up again. :-\

Not specifically.  It was near the back of the store (here in Tumwater), and across from the refrigerated dairy cases.

I hope not!  Hopefully, the post office is holding onto packages!  I don't know how much they can hold, or if things will be sent back, but I hope that they're not.

Maybe you will find slips saying where to pick up the packages.  The post office should be open.

The post office is open, but our building isn't...at least, the mail clerk hasn't been there since last week.  And since the delivery address is my work address, not my personal residential address, I found that can't redirect any of my packages.  I just have to wait to see what is delivered when my building finally does open and we let the post office know that we're open.
