For the last month I’ve bee recovering from emergency eye surgery. In a few hours as I write I will find out if the operation took as there is a possibility I might have to do it again.i cannot see out of my eye and have not been able to use my computer. I use my iPad placing it 12 inches from my faces. Reading and usually using the dictation button

My toilet once again has sprung a leak, and our super has admitted, after 4-6 tries to repair it, that he needs to bring in a plumber.  I think I need a new one.  The current one was cheaply installed over 20 years ago when the landlord redid all the bathroom plumbing in the building as past of a water pressure-conservation move in the City.  There was even a Seinfeld episode about the situation.

So, I may have a plumber in today.  I may also hear from my visiting nurse, but I would prefer to see her on Wednesday or Thursday.  The toilet leak is the priority, and I must make an attempt to do laundry today or tomorrow.  I still need a visit to the bank that I did not make on Saturday before the first of July.

I remember a period of my younger days where staging a show seemed easy.  I remember seeing lots of plays and musicals in revivals between 1960 and 1991 from Cincinnati Summer Opera to Lincoln Center and a lot of points in between that weren't tortured or beaten out of shape by incompetent nincompoops.  I bring this up because this leads to Rodgers and Hammerstein, our TOD.  The last wonderful revival of Carousel I saw was the Houston Grand Opera production of summer 1991, directed by a wonderful director, Gerald Gutierrez, whose one big Broadway misstep was the last revival of Once Upon A Mattress.  This Carousel made no attempt to PC the show, cut or rearrange the score, and it had an amazing cast.  The rumor was Houston wanted to bring it to Broadway but Cameron Mackintosh, who had the option, wanted to bring in "his" version from the National Theater.  People raved about the Mackintosh hatchet job, but I watch the youtube video of the Carousel Waltz and think, nope, you missed the boat, and the less said about the last PC sparkling clean revival, the better.

So, Carousel is near and dear to my heart, and I wish I liked the film more.  When I first saw it (September 1956?) I was weeping so loudly by the end that my brother Macbeth kept swatting me and saying, Shut up! You're embarrassing me.  Now I find it misconceived with that heavenly framing device and an overly coy actress playing Carrie.  I prefer Shirley Jones in Oklahoma!, but I do like the Nettie, Mrs Mullins, Robert Rounseville, Cameron Mitchell, and Gordon Macrae.

The orchestrations are terrific, but I still prefer Agnes DeMille to Rod Alexander and Bambi Lynn.  Perhaps if Agnes hadn't been so difficult on the film of Oklahoma!, she might have done Carousel.

I first saw The Sound of Music around 1961 when the national tour played Cincinnati.  I like the score and wish the movie had included the two cynical numbers.  I've never liked the film much, but after seeing the sadly inept revival from the 1990s and the last two TV versions from New York and London, the movie looks much better because the people involved knew what they were doing.

I enjoy Rodgers and Hammerstein when I encounter them, but I have encountered them so often that I don’t play their scores anywhere near the amount I play Rodgers and Hart or Rodgers’ work after Hammerstein. Do I Hear a Waltz? is a favorite, and I enjoy a lot of I Remember Mama, Rex snd No Strings.

I love Oklahoma! as a film and a stage show, and I think the score remains fresh as it was in 1943.

I feel protective of Carousel because it's near-perfect and in danger of being ruined by the PC crowd and asshole producers, as though spouse abuse no longer occurs or should be examined seriously.  I've hated both of the last revivals, and count myself fortunate to have seen two brilliant stage revivals, the 1966 Lincoln Center production with John Raitt, Susamn Watson, and Jerry Orbach, and the 1991 Houston Grand Opera production.

I thought South Pacific was stodgy until I saw that 2007 Lincoln Center revival.

I would like The King and I better if all that condescending pidgin English were replaced with decent English grammar, but I love the film.

Cinderella keeps getting raped, rather violently in the Brandy version and last Broadway production, in every production after Julie Andrews, which is near perfection.

Flower Drum Song: both the show and film are glorious.  Who thought that revival-update was a good idea?

The Sound of Music still works better for me as a stage show, probably since I saw it first, although no one knows how to direct it or cast it these days.

Whenever the subject turns to R&H, I go into the other room to make sure my Modern Library edition is sitting there, safe and sound, and to hold it for a moment.

I will forever thank Gaul's Books & Records in Fort Lauderdale for their wonderful store and for their complete Modern Library section which added much brightness and a bit o' culture to my own high school days.

Allegro fascinates me. I, too, had that bible back then and thought, how good this is until it turns stupid. Rouben Mamoulian could And would force libretto changes, Agnes De Mille would not and did not. Everything that’s wrong with Allegro belongs to Oscar Hammerstein.

There are three big problems with Allegro:
   1.  The wife is a bitch and unfaithful, only it's mostly offstage.
   2.  Why is the wonderful "So Far" sung by a character of absolutely no importance?
   3.  The final song is sung by a ghost!

Oklahoma! - In thinking about the timeline, I wonder if I've always been wrong in crediting South Pacific with being my first movie musical. There's a vague hint of a memory telling me I was taken to this one sometime during its first release in Columbus, possibly by my grandmother who took my sister and me to several things of this nature. This could mean I saw it at the glorious Ohio Theater in its roadshow engagement. Unfortunately, I was too young to truly appreciate either of these things. I'll have to do some research.

Over the years I liked Oklahoma! well enough, but I was more interested in the other shows. Fast-forwarding to present day, I was blown away by the quality of the film, every single element of it, two years ago when Robert Harris screened the Todd-AO DCP for a small audience at the Bedford Playhouse while they were still completing renovations in the rest of the building. Blown away, I tell you. Ideal presentation in every way, blah blah blah. Seen properly, that thing is a masterpiece. Actually, it even shows up well at home in comparison with the CinemaScope version. But in a real theater? A miracle.

Carousel - I don't remember my first contact with it. I know I had the soundtrack recording at home. Later I was very much into the RCA Lincoln Center revivals and thrilled to that one before ever hearing the original cast. I then saw the tour with John Raitt in Miami. I did enjoy the film version back then, but I haven't watched it in many years.

The King and I - Never saw this one on stage in my early years. Just the film, which I loved, and - again - I played that soundtrack recording many times up to when the Lincoln Center one was issued, and that was a game changer, for the general production and for the inclusion of the "Small House of Uncle Thomas" ballet. Many years later I enjoyed listening to the studio cast recording with Julie Andrews which uses the film orchestrations -- one of the few times that's ever been done.

I talked about my South Pacific history just a week or two ago, so I'll leave that one alone except to say the Lincoln Center production was a marvel to these eyes and ears. As a side note, this was later in the run when Laura Osnes was playing Nellie Forbush, and I was enchanted - to the point that when the telecast came around and Kelli O'Hara was back in the role, it just seemed rather ordinary. Oh, shame on me.

The Sound of Music - After years of wrestling with this conflict, I've come around to seeing both the stage and film versions as ideal in their respective places. Having grown up on the original cast recording and seeing a few local stage productions, when I saw the movie in its roadshow engagement, the changes in treatment came as a shock, however visually beautiful it was. So it took me some years, but now I'm right there with anyone who finds the film version a work of genius in its own right.

My first post-R&H Rodgers was No Strings, a mysterious and interesting new thing for me. It also holds the distinction of being the first vocal score I'd ever seen. A couple of people who did a lot of singing in our church came over one evening to try out a few things, including "The Sweetest Sounds". They'd just bought the No Strings score and plunked it down in front of me. I was thrilled with playing a real accompaniment for a real production song as opposed to a sheet music arrangement.

So it wasn't long after that I began buying my own scores. For precise reasons that I've never been able to determine, the first one I bought for myself was The King and I, and I obsessed over that thing. The next ones purchased were West Side Story and The Music Man. These were never regularly stocked at my local music store, so every time I had another nine dollars to blow, I was having them order another score for me. A blessing on Shoemaker's Music Store -- along with Gaul's Books & Records, they were my South Florida life support system.

There’s another: Hammerstein’s hokum about salvation in the simple life rings false, making the whole point of the show wrong. Broadway audiences didn’t want to be told their lives were worthless. Who does?

TOD: Rodgers and Hammerstein

1. Cinderella. Probably the first R&H I ever saw was Leslie Ann Warren's Cinderella, which I love to this day. I think it is magical.

2. Carousel. Sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't. It depends on the casting. I like the semi-staged concert version with Kelli O'Hara and Nathan Gunn.  Re the spousal abuse that so many people complain about: Wae-Ling and I watched it together, and we talked about the dangers of taking up with "bad boys." Yes, they are exciting, but a woman should really look for stability in her life. A nice boy makes a better partner.  The movie version bores me, by the way.

3. Sound of Music. I like both the movie and the musical -- except I like the placement of "My Favorite Things" and "Lonely Goatherd" better in the movie.

4. South Pacific. I'm trying to think if I have ever seen this live. I don't think so. I like the concert version with Reba MacEntire.  Except I wish they could have done it less like a concert and more like the Carousel.

5. King and I. I'm kinda meh on this one. When it toured through here last year, it was beautiful, but the king only had about 8 children.

6. Oklahoma. I like the version with Hugh Jackman. It's on youtube. The latest Broadway version is supposed to tour through here next season, and I'm pretty meh about it, from what I saw on the Tonys.

I charged my magic trackpad overnight, and now when I unplug it bluetooth isn't finding it.  It reads as charged 100%.  I've turned it on and off - nothing.  Annoying - I know the recommendation will be to restart the computer but I doubt that will help.

Do you have any friends in the upcoming season in my area? Mean Girls, My Fair Lady, Hadestown, Oklahoma, Tootsie, Frozen, The Band's Visit, Hamilton

My Fair Lady has a couple of friends if there aren't any personnel changes.  My friend Adam Grupper was playing Doolittle and my friend John Bell was conducting.

1. Cinderella. Probably the first R&H I ever saw was Leslie Ann Warren's Cinderella, which I love to this day.

I love it, too. I just wish they hadn’t cut so much music.

I was able to pair the trackpad with my MacBook so I then knew the trackpad was charged and fine.  Ultimately, I restarted the computer and now it's fine.  Amazing how that seems to fix everything.  I have my old trackpad and that paired and was fine even before the restart.  Something with the new one and bluetooth must have frozen.

I wish I knew someplace that makes a Chinese Chicken Salad at all, let alone a really great one. I shall have to poll every Chinese or Asian jernt around here and see what I can find.

Same with a good Chinese Cole Slaw. I love all that stuff.

I guess I could always try a few recipes myself, and see what happens.

Have you had the one at The Cheesecake Factory?

Excellent, then ok news.  And again could news that the pain is gone.

Last year at this time, we were in Kissimmee,  hosting a breakfast for the Vixter and (then) Vixfiancee and their wedding party prior to the arrival of the hairdressers and makeup artists and departure of the men.

Aren't you glad the wedding was last year and not this year?  Of course that question is rhetorical ;)

So glad... they had actually considered marrying this year and decided it was silly to wait

I didn't realize you had come close to the nightmare of a wedding this year.

The laundry is put away, and the plumbers could not come until Thursday, so Jeff replaced the pipe that kept leaking and we hope that will take care of things.

Back from picking up packages, a Gelson's stop, and I just had to throw out an entire batch of faux chicken stroganoff, which is so irritating I can't even tell you.  I hope I don't get food poisoning for the few tastes I had - about four - to make sure I was tasting what I was tasting.  Since it was great until I added the sour cream, the sour cream is the culprit.  Brand new, never opened, supposedly good to the end of July, bought just a week and a half ago - and obviously gone bad.

I had no idea Byron Janis was still alive - 93, I think.  I thought he'd died because there aren't any more recordings after the 1960s - but he developed severe arthritis, finally came forward about it, and became the spokesperson for the Arthritis Foundation.  There's a DVD in this set with his story, so I'll definitely watch that.

This day just needs to be over, seriously.  Bad food, the computer not doing what it should be doing because of weirdnesses, the most recent of which was Airdrop not finding my iPhone because the wi-fi kept defaulting to an old network of mine.  I Googled and found out how to stop that from happening in the future, and now it's finally working, but between that and this morning's trackpad BS, I am officially OVER this stupid day.

He was a brilliant pianist and absolutely horrible human being. I once worked on a version of Hunchback of Notre Dame he was composing - yes, he wanted to write musicals! - and Russell Warner orchestrated his musical, Hans Brinker. Very ugly - I recall something about spousal abuse - and pretentious man, and he wrote nice music for both shows.

I had planned to paint the dresser red, but I couldn't find a red I liked. Last night, I dreamed someone was giving me the red paint. I think I will use the ripe olive instead for the the main color.

I need more mayo but all I can find are the very large jars.  Keith uses light so I only need the smaller size.  I hate those squeeze bottles.

This was a small squeeze bottle.  I think it was 12 ounces, so it wasn't a lot, but still, it was olive oil mayo, and I liked it. :-\

If I don't find more mayo before I run out, which will be fairly soon, I will have to buy a huge jar and trash most of it.

Jane, have you ever thought about making your own?  I've actually done that (years ago), but that way you can make only as much as you need.  Just a thought. :)

Sadly, after 194 years the Old Apple Tree has died :(

Oh, no!  How long ago did it die?

It was reported two days ago.  I think they have been trying to save it for a good while now.

Darn. :-\

This evening, I watched STRANGER ON THE THIRD FLOOR with Peter Lorre.

He had top billing, but I don't think he was in the 64 minute movie for 10 of those minutes.

Apparently, he owed RKO Pictures 2 days work, and this is how he took of care of that debt.

The movie was an okay way to pass the time, but nothing special.

Kirk Douglas directed and stars in Posse. He should have left it at acting. Larry Cohen seems to have taken a pass at the screenplay. Bruce Dern is his usual bad guy self. Did he ever play anything but bad guys in westerns?

Right now we have Strauss, as in Richard, Burlesk for piano and orchestra, a piece new to me.  I like it.  And next up is the Rachmaninov third piano concerto, which I love, and which was also in the Munch box set - I assume they're the same transfer.  Janis was a key Rachmaniov performer, mostly for Mercury, not RCA - I think RCA only got the first and third.

I did that years ago.   I am too lazy now.  I think the Veganese mayo is delicious but it also comes in too large of a container.

Michael, I am so sorry to hear that.  Full recovery vibes for you!

So, a complete waste of money and food.  I'm making tuna sandwiches now.

Make sure your mayo is still good ;)

What a coinkydink...speaking of mayo.  I actually accidentally left out a bottle of mayo last night on my counter all night.  Dopey me.  I made myself a sandwich and remembered to put away other things, but not the mayo.  I did not smell it to see if it would still be good.  I just chucked it in the trash. :P

Unless it was really hot in your house, it should have been fine.

I made the tiny bit of chicken I hadn't used for the rancid faux stroganoff - sautéed with some onions over rice - it's good.
