The brilliant orchestration is by William Schuman, president of Juilliard and early songwriter with Frank Loesser, and I think it's one of the funniest pieces of music ever written.

Annabelle kept me company, and I gave some thought to my morning chores: make the bed, breakfast and meds, vacuum, and take the recyclables to the basement.

I'll be glad when/if we get more money out of Congress.

And I know that’s silly. People around me do it all the time, with perfectly good results. I just seem to think it’s something I’ve got to sit down and practice, and I never quite get around to doing it.

Earthquakes, bees, and meteors headed for earth - not so much.

My biggest disappointment with THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE was that we didn't get a final ocean shot....just that tight shot of the hull as everyone climbed out.....

I wanted to see a pan that showed us what was left......

Stokowski conducting the Second Orchestral Set on Phase 4 — which I see is also in the Morton Gould series, but do check out the Stokie.

Second Symphony, and I see I owe a Mr. McGlinn my sincere thanks for scores to the Second and Third.

Stokowski conducting the Fourth symphony — and I don’t pretend to understand it one whit, but I’ve had fun listening to some of it. (I looked at the first page of the score one day in Patelson’s and nearly fainted.)

I believe I’ve enjoyed the Holiday Symphony in the past, but I don’t remember any of it now.

I do like Three Places in New England.

I mostly like The Unanswered Question in live performance when it can be done outdoors with the solo trumpet up on a hill. I was spoiled early because we did it at Meadowbrook in just that kind of setting.

There are smaller pieces I’m totally glossing over that I do like. And yes to what DR Elmore said about the Variations on America.

Then there are other pieces I actually played in school which I’m afraid meant nothing to me then and mean nothing to me now.

Columbia issued a number of nice recordings, and it seems like there were good Mercurys of a couple of these things.

Having now lived in his birthplace for three decades, I’ve always been disappointed at how so many things are named after him, while the general populace has no idea who he was. They for sure wouldn’t recognize a note of his music if it walked up and slapped them in the face. I would hope he gets taught to some degree at the local college.

In my early years here I was excited when the town refurbished his house, but at the dedication ceremony, the only person I remember actually talking about Ives the composer was the mayor, and when a string quartet sat down to play, it was traditional classical fare. Oy! Worse, though, I’m not even sure that the house has been well cared for in the intervening years.

So my own appreciation of his music is sketchy, and there are certain pieces I can’t deal with at all. It’s not easy stuff. But I’m glad it exists, and I personally love thinking of him and the local influences on his music. I, too, love the history of the man himself, even if it’s more than I love much of his output.

I don't think Ives believed it was, but I find Schuman's orchestration very funny.

I think this is quite exciting. She wasn't my first choice of the women in running, but this is excellent.

Going through another big ol' box o' CDs - the complete John Barbirolli Warner Recordings, which is, of course, a complete misnomer since he never recorded for Warners, but they own all the EMI and PYE stuff, so here we are. There are 106 CDs in this behemoth. I'm making my way through the first ten, which are all from 78s - the quality of those transfers ranges from astonishing to terrible.

Absolutely magical and happily the best of the 78 transfers thus far. Have heard many performances of this, including his later stereo version, but this is just wonderful.

New 4K transfers on eleven out of the fifteen films and it includes ALL the early films so I'll finally have my beloved The White Sheik on Blu-ray and hopefully one of the 4K transfers. Their DVD was a botch job and didn't even have the film's intermission card - hopefully they'll do this one right. But also La Strada, Il Bidone, I Vitelloni, Variety Lights, Nights of Cabiria, La Dolce Vita (probably the same transfer they issued as it was already 4K), 8 1/2 (praying for a new transfer), Juliet of the Spirits, Roma, Satyricon, Amarcord and a couple of other later films which don't really interest me.
