Well, you've read the notes, the notes were slightly better and I took them, and now it is time for you to post until the slightly better cows come home.

DR George, yesterday when you posted about your father's situation, I wanted to post that I hoped his passing would be swift and painless as possible, but I felt I was the gun.  I was saddened to read this morning that he has passed, but I'm so happ[y for all of you that it was so quick.  Watching my mother linger for days was hell.

So . . . I send my sympathy and condolences to you and all your family.  Keep us posted opn how you are.

I had this really strange dream, which seemed to be somewhere between the 16th and 20th centuries.  At one point everyone was in Elizabethan clothing and in the next they wore 20th century clothes.  Everything seemed to take place in and around myt Aunt Jean's house in Hamilton, OH, and Wilson Elementary School in Middletown, OH.  My goddaughter Charlotte was peripherally in it since I was trying to call her about the cute young man mowing this lawn, then I was at my aunt's to get a new blue and white striped shirt, then I was in this council room for a vote - and everyone was dressed in Elizabethan costume.  Someone had died, and a vote was going to happen.  A pitcher containing the dead person's blood was passed around and his enemies were pouring some of it into their wine.  I passed.

This morning my bank received the first of these payments, i.e., the $300 amount less taxes, so at least I know we're in the game. Our announcement had said something about it being doled out in more than one payment, so, as long as it's happening...

This was the friend whose theatre was yanked out from under him right after they built a new building.....anyway I think I wrote all about this when it happened back in 2016 or so......or maybe it was 2018.....

GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS

I was very slightly involved when they did the musical remake.  John Williams, the musical director, was my publicity client at the time.

Frankly, considering all the major pre-production problems it faced (e.g. cast changes, composer changes, director changes), I think the film turned out okay.  Not as good as the original, but okay.

In my now long OOP book about movie remakes (MAKE IT AGAIN, SAM), I have a chapter about GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS in which I interviewed associate producer Mort Abrahams and director Herb Ross.

The problems they faced getting that film on the screen was, to say the least, a nightmare.

Back in 1999, when I directed THE DOORWAY for Roger Corman in Ireland, we were seeking a "name" to do "the 5 day role".

Since he was Irish, I suggested Peter O'Toole, but he was tied up on another project.

Roy Scheider did the part, and I was very pleased with both his performance and out relationship.

But, it would also have been nice to work with Peter O'Toole.

Skimming over O'Toole's filmography, I imagine I'd add The Last Emperor ... providing, of course, that I actually watch it sometime. I've owned the Criterion release for YEARS and haven't watched it. What is this, our Day of Confession?

But those four are my choices, too. Each of those is a work of genius in its own way, and they're made all the greater by O'Toole's presence.

Hmm...  I see he did a TV movie of Pygmalion with Margot Kidder. I'd certainly be curious to see that.

And then there's....  Caligula...   :)

Here's the blurb that goes along with it:

Along with of the legions of theaters around the globe that have been forced to close or severely restrict their events due to the pandemic, the Warner has explored myriad avenues through which to bring live theater to its community while remaining steadfast in its adherence to public health guidelines.

Enter the Warner's production of Stephen Sondheim's ASSASSINS: an outdoor, socially distanced live musical performance that will take place next Wednesday, September 23rd, at the Pleasant Valley Drive-In Theater.

It all began just a few short weeks ago when Warner Theatre Producing Artistic Director, Sharon W. Houk, embraced the notion that "necessity is the mother of invention" and, with her trademark can-do perseverance, embarked upon a quest to present an evening of live theater in a health-conscious setting for our arts-hungry community to enjoy. By calling upon their mutual theatrical knowledge base in order to think way outside the proverbial box, Sharon and director Katherine Ray have united with Warner stage alumni to form a one-of-a-kind experience for audience members to behold.

This fresh new take on the highly-acclaimed 2015 Nancy Marine Studio Theater production has been transformed into a re-imagined, socially distant "car show" performance at the Pleasant Valley Drive-In Theater in Barkhamsted. Performers will be staged, in socially distant fashion, in "vehicle pods" (pickup/flatbed trucks, wagons, open cars) while video cameras project their live performances in real time on the big screen.

As seamless as it all sounds, an adaptation of this extent is not free from challenges. However, director Katherine Ray prefers to call these hurdles "creative opportunities". "We have a show that was initially set on a stage indoors with a budget," Ms. Ray says. "We are taking this beautiful production and relying on wonderful donations of goods and services that have to be pieced together to work. In addition, we have one day to load everything in - including the electricity to supply all the power for the production - and see if it works. The cast has been rehearsing via Zoom and won’t run the entire show on set until Tech Tuesday. The tech is going to be just as exciting as the show the next day. To keep with COVID-19 safety compliance, we have to choreograph the load-ins and make sure people are not overlapping in order to keep everyone safe."

I have a suggestion for TCB:

How about if you apply to be a foster home for Pockets and her kittens. When the kittens are big enough to be adopted, you can adopt Pockets (if you two get along).

I'm sure they don't want to raise the kittens in the shelter. They probably would love to have her go into a home for a couple of months.

ChasSmith, that production won’t be zoomed, will it?

No, but wouldn't that have been fun?

And these people play by the rules. Unless they contracted with Music Theatre International for the rights to do that, you can "bet your bottom dollar" that nothing of theirs will see the light of day on the internet. They don't let an archival recording out, either. They usually tape one show, and sometimes -- maybe -- the cast and crew will be invited to see it. Once. And then it goes back into the vault.

Listening to Mr. Orff's Cutilli Carmina with Ormandy and some fine singers.  It's not the Carmina, musically, but interesting.  Orff was really an interesting composer.

Had no idea the the Catulli Carmina was not really an orchestral work like its predecessor - the band only plays in the first and last movements, I think, otherwise it's all a cappella, not my favorite thing, I have to say.  But I enjoyed it and I guess I'll see out the final part of the trilogy.

I fell in love with  eight-year-old BJ last month when he entered the Staten Island ACC.  He weighed too much for the size of my apartment and I couldn't walk him so it was a no-go.  This afternoon the ACC murdered him, and it really hurts.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyzxQ1LrH3o

The people on these animal rescue sites are full of misinformation: I just learned that BJ was rescued and did not die today, although I was told ear;ier around 3:45 that he was murdered.  I don't know what the truth is now.

BK is hearing some fine music. Now I want to get into Bluebeard’s Castle. I really only listened to the piece several times back in the late ‘80s, early ‘90s. I’ve got the Ormandy. I’m also wondering if I taped the Met production off the air back around then.

I was a little put off, too, when I first listened to Catulli Carmina, and I’ve never given it the proper chance to grow on me.

But what a pair of Ormandy recordings. Another wonderful set is Jochum’s on Deutsche Grammophone. He also covered the third piece.

Thinking about a little drive or walk.
Title: Re: THE SLIGHTLY BETTER DAY - I'LL TAKE IT!
Post by: bk on September 17, 2020, 09:42:42 PM
So, I did a 1.5 mile brisk walk, stopped at local bank branch's ATM and tried to deposit a little five buck residual check.  I have no idea what happened, but it didn't process the check and didn't return the check - instead of that I got a little print out apologizing and saying to call the Electronic Claims, which of course I can't do until morning.  I think they intend to have me file a claim but I will not be getting off the phone until that money is in my account - not my fault, their fault and because something screwy is with their machine I'm not going to be punished or penalized for it, it's that simple.  Can you imagine if it had been a check of substance?  It's made me very nervous about using their ATM anymore - I used one at my branch earlier and that was fine, but had there been an issue I could have just walked in the bank and they could have dealt with it right then and there.  This claims thing reeks, but we'll see what that's actually about in the morning.

It's been in the 90s all week - most annoying.  Evening's however are nice and cool - right now on the walk it was 75, although it sure felt cooler than that, more like high 60s.  In the house?  78.  So, air is on and cooling down.

So . . . I send my sympathy and condolences to you and all your family.  Keep us posted opn how you are.

Thanks, Larry.  It was quick.  My friend Margo's mother had alcohol-related dementia and it took her 15 years to die...15 very long and painful (for Margo and her siblings) years. :-\

It was only a couple of years ago (I think) that I realized that Carmina Burana was part of a trilogy.  I've thought about getting the other parts, but I haven't...yet.

Just read that Tony Tanner died - we had him in a Kritzerland show - weird guy but fun.

That's so sad. :(

I am finding places in the world far worse than we are.  At 1300 Mammoth Lakes, California is double our worst score.  Are they on fire?

:o

Fortunately for them the wind has shifted and they are down to 281.

I fell in love with  eight-year-old BJ last month when he entered the Staten Island ACC.  He weighed too much for the size of my apartment and I couldn't walk him so it was a no-go.  This afternoon the ACC murdered him, and it really hurts.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyzxQ1LrH3o (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyzxQ1LrH3o)

The people on these animal rescue sites are full of misinformation: I just learned that BJ was rescued and did not die today, although I was told ear;ier around 3:45 that he was murdered.  I don't know what the truth is now.

That's weird!  Hopefully, it's really true that he was rescued!

Tanner once sacked an actor friend of mine from a show for not putting out.

Yikes!  How rude! >:(

So before my sister and I left, my mom said that her friends and we could take anything we wanted from my dad's library.  Sonia is religious, so she took some of the crosses that my dad had collected.  My sister got a couple of things, and I took a yearbook that my Aunt Mary Lou had sent my dad.  It's of one of their brother's 1952 high school yearbook from Torrence, California:

I find it comforting to have something, even if it is small, from a loved one.

Another thing that I took was this jug that my dad probably got in the late 1960s or early 1970s.  It's obviously covered in a resin, but the wood knots are real wood:

I also took a framed copy of the sheet music to Tony Bennett's "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," but I didn't get a picture of that picture.

I'm not religious, but I love the silver, and my dad's church is the St. George Byzantine Catholic Church (https://www.stgeorgeolympia.org/).

Exactly.  She doesn't want/need a lot of his things.  She will keep some things, just not a lot.

Yes.  He actually helped found the church way back when.  When he got back into going to church, he found out about this group of Byzantine Catholics and liked the way they did things.  At first, they were just renting rooms at various places, then they were able to raise money and actually build the church.  He was part of all of that.

Rachel didn't say a specific date, but I think the order was that DeJoy's changes had to be undone so that the election was not affected, so there's a time crunch, at least.

Yup...and he said at the time that they did NOT pick the name because of him.  His name is George, also!
