Today, I go back to work after unexpectedly being off for three days.  I'm sure that I'll have a lot of e-mails to go through.  I forgot to set up an automatic reply, or even a voice mail message.  Oh, well...it's too late now. ::)

BK, my recording of the St Matthew Passion is John Eliot Gardiner's; he and Sir Charles Mackerras are two of my favorite conductors, but I must say the lineup of singers on Klemperer's EMI recording is really impressive: Schwarzkopf, Ludwig, etc.
Title: Re: RAINBOWS FOR ALI AND ME
Post by: elmore3003 on September 21, 2020, 04:33:41 AM
The whole period music performance movement was good when it began around 1964 because it was time to kick the dust off Victorian approaches to music before 1850 or so.  I much prefer Mackerras' and Davis' recordings of Händel's Messiah over the many before then because it was no longer a stodgy church piece; it suddenly danced, and a good conductor knows when the music should move so that the serious moments have weight.  Too many conductors today - in serious music, Broadway, and concert - don't know this and speed through everything.

Today, in what may be called the period instrument movement, everything is too often rushed. If yopu find the Klemperer is what your prefer for Bach, go for it.  I would like to hear it, but I must confess that Bach's vocal music does not appeal much to me, although the Brandenberg Concerti put a huge smile on my face.  I think it's because I feel Bach's vocal writing has an instrumental approach where Händel's writing seems to flow more naturally.  It's all a matter of personal taste.

I see that Bernstein conducted an abridged St Matthew Passion.  His cast doesn't impress me, but I don't like his work in baroque music. He seems happier in romantic, late-romantic, and contemporary music.

We watched the Emmy Awards last night.

Turned the show off after a half-hour.

Looking at the winner's list this morning, there was not one show that we had seen.

Talk about being out-of-the-loop.

One last thought on the period instrument movement: this is what led to much of the work I did, that curiosity to hear what popular song might have sounded like to the people who wrote them.  When On Your Toes was revived in the early 1980s, Hans Spialek - the original orchestrator for Rodgers' Babes In Arms, I Married An Angel, Boys from Syracuse, Pal Joey, and other shows - was terrified that his orchestrations would be laughed out of the theatre because it would sound old-fashioned.  I believe this revival, as well as the 1975 revival of Very Good Eddie and the Houston Grand Opera revival of Show Boat were the first shows to let an audience hear a close approximation of what was heard when these shows opened.  John McGlinn wasn't the first, but he was the one who got the praise for treating popular song historically.

I knew Mildred Natwick slightly from phone conversations at the Drama Book Shop.  She died in 1994, so it must haver been between 1990 and 1993.  She had an account and used to call to place orders.  She told me I should come for tea, and I wish I had.  One of my best college friends was the assistant to costumer Jane Greenwood, who dressed 70 Girls 70, and he adored her.

My first real exposure to the St. Matthew Passion was at Meadowbrook in ‘68, where Roger Wagner of the Roger Wagner Chorale led a performance at the end of the season. I wasn’t involved with it, but I sat in on a rehearsal and attended the performance. I thought it was beautiful, but remembered hardly anything of it till listening to a couple of recordings some years later. I would go into the Music Room to see which one I have, if indeed I still have one, but there’s a cat on me.

I do know I don’t have Klemperer, and I’m curious now to hear it. I also like the idea of Richter, and of the suggestions of DRs elmore and singdaw. Robert Shaw might have been my man, but he never recorded it.

Rehearsal yesterday was cool and windy and grueling, but definitely gratifying. We ran straight through the show, and it was so rewarding to once again hear our original cast from five years ago.

(They were able to reassemble the cast with the exception of two people — one who had conflicts, and the other (our Sara Jane Moore) who had just passed away following a long battle with cancer.)

I have absolutely no idea how this is truly going to be pulled off, and how it will be received. Well, we never know the latter, do we. But this group is definitely breaking ground with the drive-in concept, and I really hope it’s successful and they reap the rewards they deserve.

It would be wonderful if Ben came back, but in the few times I've seen him over the past several years, there was never any question that it's been good for him to have restructured his life and routine to some extent.

It is ALWAYS wonderful to talk with him, though. How great it would be if people like Ben would at least stop in occasionally to catch up and while away a pleasant hour or so. I would say the same about (for instance) DRs Matthew, Jose, etc.

Happy birthday, Laura! Hope Leonard treats you nice today.

Thank you, John G. He's birdwatching out the window at the moment.

Drop-in visitor has come and gone and now it's a waiting game until groceries arrive and I can eat.  They have until four and that's when they'll probably get here.

Darn, the smoke began slowly rolling back in this morning.  Our air quality is unhealthy again.  Sigh.

Went and got my seasonal flu shot this morning. There were quite few other folks doing the same. I fear this fall and winter are going to turn very dark in the public sphere.

LOL, probably close to that.  Keith has one from back then.  I considered getting my own before they raised the price.  It seemed unnecessary to have two cards.

Been doing stuff.  There is something at the mail place, so I guess I'll go get it since I have to exercise the motor car anyway.  I had three low-calorie hot dogs and three low-calorie buns for a net calorie intake of 550.  Pretty good and I'll need to have a little something else - maybe I'll pick up a head of lettuce, that would be easiest.

The one I really want to see is that bizarre musical version of War of the Worlds. I saw that album for sale for years. Never bought it. I think I was right not to. I checked it out of the library a few months back and downloaded a copy, but I don't think I've ever listened to it.

I just officially made the final revisions to the A&T book.  I'm very proud of how it's turned out.  I wish the 2021 Writers Market book of literary agents were out, but it usually isn't published until November.

It's great that it's finished and you have something you're proud of. Congrats.
