Well, you've read the notes, the notes mentioned the wrong Amadeus, and now it is time for you to post until the wrong cows come home.

DR singdaw, which version of Emma were you watching? I think my favorite remains the Kate Beckinsale/BBC adaptation, although the longer Johnny Lee Miller version is really good, perfect if Romola Garai did not seem too often to be in the 21st century rather than the 19th.  My least favorite, Gwyneth Paltrow's too-pretty, too-slick, too-Hollywood adaptation, has its moments, but to me it's nearly as poor as the MGM Pride and Prejudice with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier.

We did not watch Close Encounters last night, so it will be tomorrow night's video.  I ended up reading a bit and watching Anderson Cooper and Chris Cuomo on CNN. They interviewed several Trumpers at yesterday's Macon, Georgia, rally. Dumber than a box of rocks, they all seemed to be out of central casting for a Deliverance remake.  Cue the banjos!

There's so much that's good, but I wish I liked Garai more - she's better as Cordelia in King Lear - but I really like most of the cast. Jonny Lee Miller is a good Mr Knightley, but he sure doesn't look to be 16 years older than Emma!  It's almost as good as the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice.  I wish my favorite version of Emma with Kate Beckinsale were 30 minutes longer, because things get rushed to finish on time.  The last film version from last year is really interesting, as it pushes the overworked servants and the idle rich, and the comedienne Miranda Hart is amazing as Miss Bates.

One last thought on the Romola Garai Emma: I love Michael Gambon as Mr Woodhouse! Every adaptation, except for the Paltrow, casts a wonderful British star in the role.  I don't even remember Mr Woodhouse in the Paltrow film.

I have similar feelings about Family Plot as BK. I didn’t care for it when I first saw it, but I watched it after Barbara Harris died and her performance is practically perfect, as Ms. Poppins would say.

BK, were you at the premiere of FAMILY PLOT in Century City?

I was a bit disappointed in it, too, back then, even though I returned to see it a few times. "Lightweight" was certainly the word for it, right from the get go. But like DR John G. posted, the death of Barbara Harris renewed my interest in it, as I was totally charmed by the clips people were showing then. I'm more than ready to view the whole thing with fresh eyes, shortcomings and all. Agree about Karen Black in particular. She could be so perfect in some things, and just "wrong" in others.

If I'm remembering correctly from when the late Hitchcocks finally appeared on Blu-ray, this was considered one of the worst transfers. When I checked it out, I decided to hold onto the DVD from the "Masterpiece" set because it was easier to watch.

So last night I did, indeed, watch the theatrical cut of TOPAZ. This was the laserdisc, which must be the identical release to that first VHS one in all its "full screen" glory. To all indications, it's at least open matte, but while I'm able to "zoom" that to approximate the 1.85 ratio (which worked fine), the loss in resolution is just too great to endure. It's amazing to think that laserdisc was the "HD" of its time, in comparison with the broadcast standard but especially compared with VHS. But my eyes adapted quickly enough, and I found myself liking the film more than ever.

BK is totally correct, of course, about the casting and the music. The score by Maurice Jarre has its French and Zhivago-ish charms at times, but ..... that's all you get. It doesn't lift the movie above a certain level. The very thought of what could have been, with a Herrmann score, is a tantalizing one for the ages. And those poor Devereauxs. They're like talking mannequins.

But the parts that are great, oh my god, the Harlem and the Cuban scenes are just brilliant. And the quick conclusion in the "American" ending. Just perfect. What in the HELL were they thinking with those alternate endings?

Anyway, I'm all rarin' to go to watch the Blu-ray now, to get the low-res image out of my mind and savor a "proper" video presentation, and to see what those extra 23 minutes are. I'm now wondering if I've even seen them. I'm pretty sure I watched the DVD at some point years ago, so I would have then, but at this point I don't remember anything that I didn't see last night.

Speaking of original versions and wrong Amadeuses...

I believe we are also in desperate want of a good theatrical cut of AMADEUS. The only one on Blu-ray is an extended "director's cut", and the only theatrical version available is on a primitive old "flipper" DVD. I don't know that movie very well, but word has it that Mr. Forman's cut is quite the bloated affair.

I've gone back to Ritz and Escoffier, which is thoroughly delightful. But one sentence stopped me. In the late 19th century, the author says, talking about food at the dinner table was a no-no. I know from reading writers of the time that good cooks were few and far between, but since my friends and I talk about food all the time, I doubt I would have liked those endless dinner parties.

Good Morning!   Today, the organizing begins.  Not until I head to the Whole Foods to pick up some dairy-free ice cream to take to a friends house tonight.

Yesterday, the boys got to go to the vet and get updated on their shots.  Leo got an examine as well and he passed with flying colors.  Tomorrow, they get groomed.  They are very fuzzy.  They don't shed so they have to be groomed a few times a year.  They are very cute when they return.

I went back to urgent care today.  Dr. Hottie was there, but was not assigned to my care.  Dr. Un-hottie was very nice.  He checked out my finger and decided that the sutures seemed to be holding very well, so he decided I didn’t need the metal splint or all the tons of gauze the nurse had used on Wednesday.  So, I am down to one large bandaid and it feels 1000% better.

No wonder it was difficult for you to clean and change.  Less pressure on those sensitive finger tip nerves must be more comortable.

I'm really enjoying Les Liaisons Dangereuses, but ...

I can only read so many letters at one time. I'm afraid at this pace, I'll read 10 pages here, 10 there and finish the book in 2021. This is my second or third attempt to get through it. I'm determined to finish it, though.

Sadly, a modern version of this would all be done in emails, tweets and Facebook posts.

Decided to give the Alfie Boe concert a try. His voice can be great on songs with a majestic sweep, especially when he remembers the lyrics. But he just did a version of Hushabye Mountain that didn't quite make it vocally. But his orchestra was great, and I just wish I were on a dancefloor waltzing to it.

Have been working today on a project. In a week and a half, I will be giving an online presentation on tower bells and the English art of change-ringing. Not something I knew a lot about, previously. The research has been fun and interesting, and there are rabbit-holes of online videos available for illustration and edification.

There's even a Midsomer Murders episode about bell ringers. They are odd.

My impression is that change-ringing aficionados are, by and large, an odd lot of characters.

Saturday afternoon greetings!  Richard and I did errands at 2 different libraries and picked up sandwiches for our dinner.  I also delivered a batch of starter to my friend Molly, along with a sample of the cinnamon bread she’ll be able to bake in about 10 days.

DR singdaw, when we were in Norwich, England, almost 8 years ago, we visited the ringing chamber of St. Peter Mancroft church.  I have a panoramic photo and a video that I’ll send via Facebook Messenger.  You’re welcome to use them in your presentation - or not.

Also, Richard recommends reading Dorothy Sayers’ THE NINE TAILORS.

Watching the reunion of Company. Interesting to see Pamela Myers in between the original cast and her recent version of Another Hundred People on the Kritzerland show. Dean Jones' Someone Is Waiting is heartbreaking. And even Elaine Stritch can be seen applauding for Beth Howland after Getting Married Today.

I really liked the black woman singer, the black male singer who was incarcerated and released because he was innocent, the little guy aerial performer, and a couple of others that I can't remember.  I didn't love the three sister contortionists, and also a couple of others, but like I said before, they were all very good.

It is difficult to like something when you spit it out as quickly as I do.  When I was young my throat, mouth, and eyes swelled up. I always had medicine with me so my throat never completely closed.  Almonds were the same but now I can eat them.  Brazil nuts are bad too.

I am lucky though that with accidental exposure I developed a tolerance for nuts over time.  First symptoms are my mouth and lips start to itch.  That is when I spit ;D

I still have mild symptoms to nuts I do eat, often depending how they are prepared.  I just stockedup on Trader Joe's cashews as my mouth doesnitch at all vs Planters.  Raw almonds bother me but I no longer painfully swell up.  I can eat slivered toasted almonds by the handfuls.
