Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a patch of blu, and now it is time for you to post until the blu cows come home.

Topic of the Day:  while I've heard that there are places in Olympia that have closed (and I can't remember which because I didn't go to them regularly, or even occasionally), fortunately, none of my regular Tumwater places have. :)

Very sad news about Jerry's and about all the businesses that have suffered during the pandemic. Individuals are suffering, too, but there is no immediate help coming from Washington DC, for purely political reasons.

About this Amy Coney Barrett appointment to the SCOTUS: if there is a huge Democrat sweep in the election, I would think there must surely be a loophole to rid the court of her and Kavanaugh. Then, again, another superspreader at the White House last night might just kill a few.

TOD

Eating-wise, there are any number of New England diners all across the region that would be a huge loss, and I've been terrified to check into each of them to see who's still standing. One local informal jernt in particular would be my number one devastating loss, should it come to that. I'm not as up to date on this as I should be, and something could be slipping through my fingers as we speak.

The loss of Westchester Broadway yesterday is a blow, even if it's a place I hadn't been to in years. At least I didn't contribute to that by staying away. They were always successful. The final cultural blow is that the landlord of the building will gut the theater and it will become a warehouse. If that landlord was going without rent for these eight months, I can understand that business decision. And where has our government been in all of this?

Theater-wise, otherwise, it remains to be seen. We're rich in regional and community theater here, and of course there's been nothing since this started. The outdoor ones have only a summer season, so they all lost an entire year. The state is supposedly entering "phase whatever" which will allow a certain percentage of indoor seating, and at least one regional theater was about ready to open in compliance with that. But I don't know the latest.

Way back at the beginning of this, the area's one (very successful) four-screen art house movie theater fell to Covid, and at least two others in different parts of the state followed. Those deaths were, like, immediate.

And so it goes.

As I write "New England diners", I hope for the best for vixmom's Long Island diners and all the others across New Jersey and Westchester. No other part of the country is as rich in these types of places. The only real comparison I could make would be the multitude of wonderful coffee shops in Southern California...and God knows how many of the great ones were already lost in recent years due to greed and apathy.

Well, I need to finish my li'l coffee hour and stop posting and start moving my bloomin' arse.

I need to make a run to Home Depot and then to the supermarket. I should go to Staples for a few things, but I think that's going to have to wait a few days. I will then stop by the post office to mail this DVD to DR Elmore. And through the rest of the day, I must devote myself to finishing up an odd but amusing musical transcription project for someone.

I’ve lost too many friends in the restaurant biz to keep track of. My favorite Italian restaurant is probably the hardest to bear. They were among the smart ones who got out at the beginning of the pandemic. The ones who are operating on a smaller scale could disappear at any moment. But as I’ve cut my circle back, I’m eating out less and less, and cooking more.

I think what scares me most about covid is the threat of the loss of smell and taste.

I knew in the 1980s his gay brother Frederick, who wanted me to orchestrate a ballet for the NYC Ballet.  Peter Martins, a real shit, vertoed me.

Martins was also fired for harassment, as I recall.

And the last I heard, they were trying to raise money to give back to the Kochs, so the hall at Lincoln Center could be named after someone less venal.

I understand the evil Koch brothers do not acknowledge their brother Frederick and vice versa.  As for Martins, I first encountered him the summer of 1973 when I worked at the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, and he was a guest star dancer for a week.  He struck me then as a narcissist who would spend his time naked in front of a mirror.

Astrological doings:

There’s no doubt about it, love is in the air when Venus moves into relationship-focused Libra. Venus is Libra’s planetary ruler, and the resulting lovely, airy energy when they pair up is like no other. There’s no rocking the boat now, as obtaining peace and harmony is one of this duo’s main objectives.

So, can anything ruin this wonderful gift of pleasantness you’ll be experiencing today? Well, funny you should mention that, because while Mercury also enters fair-minded Libra, the fact that it’s in its last retrograde cycle of the year can really turn your love life upside down. The tea can really spill now, and as the drama increases, so does your insecurity. Maybe things aren’t as lovely as they seem?

I fear the damage to the police forces with all the hate directed at them because of the bad officers.  I have a friend who's husband is an officer in a department that adopted a more progressive approach a long time ago.  The verbal abuse she and her husband have had to deal with this year is sad.  Understandably she already feared for his life before the attacks against officers.  They have discussed his retiring very early.  I hope he doesn't leave as other good officers have done.

Re Elizabeth Hartman - she did several high profile films right after A Patch of Blue - The Group, You're a Big Boy Now, The Beguiled, and the huge hit, Walking Tall.  After that, she began doing TV - she even did an episode of Doctor's Hospital with George Peppard, the first episode of which I was in.  She was in Full Moon High and voiced The Secret of NIMH.  Apparently, she was not a happy person.  She suffered from mental health issues and spent some time in treatment centers for it.  She was also suicidal and finally was successful at it.  She'd given up acting by the time she committed suicide.

Last night we watched the first hour of A Street Cat Named Bob, and this ties in with yesterday's TOD. I loved the movie when I first saw it two years ago.  Since then, I read the book, and while I think it's a wonderful and moving film about a recovering heroin addict's rescuing an injured alley cat who in turn rescues the addict, the book's account is loosely transferred to a screenplay, as though the screenwriter was given a brief synopsis of the book and then used his imagination to fill in the screenplay, retaining only the basic facts of the tale.

Luke Treadaway is really wonderful, and the recently deceased streetcat Bob plays himself.  Joanna Froggatt, who played Anna Bates in Downton Abbey, plays his drug counselor.

Good Afternoon -

Just plugging along here.  Had a COVID test today.  Results should be in in a few days.  We have to have one once a month for school.  DD Ben had an OK night last night, but he was still very needy.  I think we reached an understanding by 11:30pm or so and slept through to the alarm at 5:45am or so.  He and DD are still at camp, and DD Ben has a vet appointment at 7:00pm this eve to check his eye.  I'm sure he's fine.

TOD - I'm saddened by Jerry's Deli closing as well, as that used to be stop for me when I was in the LA area.  As for around my area, I can' t think of any place that has closed because of COVID.  One of my favorite restaurants closed right when lockdown began, but I think it was going to anyway.

The pain from this bladder stone has gotten worse, so I’m having an X-ray tomorrow and a doctor’s appointment Thursday. If I last that long. It’s hard moving about.

I do, too, DR Elmore!

Locally, the one that comes to mind is the Houston Inn, which is outside Lebanon and was famous for its salad bar.  I think those are long gone and HI announced their permanent closing in the summer.

Jane, a few nights ago I started Barry Maitland's A RAVEN'S EYE. I like Maitland's work. He's a competent writer and has a different take than other mystery writers. The story revolves around two Swedish sisters, one of whom is named Freyja. I'd never heard the name until you posted that that's your granddaughter's name. This Freyja is strikingly attractive and extremely bright. Her sister is named Gudrun, which isn't nearly as pretty, IMO.

I'm very sorry that Jerry's Deli is closing. I know what a staple it has been for BK.

As for restaurants here, the salad bar I used to frequent was a real loss. I went there not so much for salad, but for the sandwich bar, soup bar, and juice bar. They're doing catering now, but their options are far fewer. A real shame.

On the positive side, the little vegan Italian restaurant has been doing fine. They have only one table -- a large one -- for family-style dining. The owner told me that business hasn't really changed since Covid, but it was mostly take-out and delivery to start with.

I hadn't heard of the name until they mentioned it as a possibility and fell in love with it.  They almost didn't give her the name as it is too popular these days.

As much as I want to see restaurants remain open, some of them need to step up to the plate. Today I went out for falafel take-out at a place I've been many times. The young man who took my order at the counter was polite and helpful, but a few minutes later went outside to say hello to his buddies. First the hug, then handshakes. He wore a mask, but his buddies did not. He came indoors and resumed his duties without washing his hands. I found this off-putting. It wouldn't have bothered me pre-Covid, but it bothers me now. I think many people only wear a mask because it's mandatory and don't understand why it's important to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. People have gotten blase and it's no wonder that the case numbers have risen.

This is not good for business! Many of us now have higher standards for restaurants than we did before Covid. We want things to be clean!

I agree in theory but haven't been doing it.  We really don't have many stores here that we frequented to begin with.  So far the local restaurants we eat at are open.  We have only been to Beaches once to eat there.  We purchased a large credit card from them just before the pandemic so we feel as if we are supporting them.

It's not a series. I think all his books are stand-alones. But I must warn you that it's a murder mystery and yes, the sisters are killed. Not so happy in that respect.

I agree with DH Richard's approach. I make a point of going to the mom-and-pop Mexican place as much as possible because I want them to stay in business. I didn't ask for a refund when my Indian food was delivered 2 hours and 15 minutes after I ordered it. (I did get an apology from the owner/manager and a refund offer.) I'm overlooking mistakes as much as possible because these businesses are so fragile right now. I tip even for take-out, which I didn't do until a few years ago. I'm trying to support them as much as possible.

Once Covid is gone and people can mingle freely again new stores and restaurants will pop up. That doesn't help those who went bankrupt after decades in business and I truly hope they won't all be chains. I'd like to see a new retail landscape with fewer large chain stores and go back to the days of lots of small, unique businesses.

It's of course also possible to be sad when something that IS part of a chain closes. Hell, we loved our Pier 1 store and as of recently all their Connecticut locations are history. I'd even be sorry if our one lone Denny's didn't make it. Y'all can chuckle at that one if you like, but once in a while stopping in there is a special thing for me because of long past associations with it, and I remember the years before the Danbury area even had one. People were truly excited when they opened here. That has to have been 25 years ago.

Had two chili, cheese, and onion hot dogs and one dog with mustard and onions.  Didn't use that much chili either - total calories for the day thus far are 800, so I'll get something of 200 calories or less later - may go to Ralph's and get some fruit, anyway.  At this point, I'm ready to eat an entire damn cake.

On DR elmore3003's recommendation, we watched A Street Cat Named Bob.

I missed all the hoopla about the book when it came out in 2012, apparently.

We enjoyed it, but I was nervous about the drugs, and kept waiting for bad things to happen.

But it had a happy ending.

Something outside has the dogs in the neighborhood all riled up. So, naturally, the bird is highly vocal, too.

Andrew Lloyd Webber's Show Must Go On selection for this coming weekend is a musical version of Wind in the Willows. I think this is from the guys who wrote Honk! and the substandard additional songs in Mary Poppins.

I can't really tell when it starts. They usually start on Friday, but this one supposedly begins tomorrow. It's being billed as a Wednesday matinee.

The start times are in UK, so it's earlier for us in the US.

DR Jeanne, Freia is the Norse-German goddess of youth, who plays a major part in Wagner's opera
Das Rheingold, the first opera in the Ring Cycle.

Ah. In THE RAVEN'S EYE the sisters' father is a professor of old Norse history and literature.

Since you stop there often will you let the owner know.  Pre-covid not washing his hands would have bothered me.

Not washing hands is pretty much a food handlers' violation!  He should've washed his hands as soon as he came back in!  Definitely let the owner know!

He doesn't work in the kitchen, just at the counter, but during a pandemic he needs to take special care. I agree with you.

I don't know the manager there and am reluctant to complain in a public forum such as Yelp. If I can mention something discreetly I will.

Check out their website and maybe there's a link to contact them.  That might be an option.

That's a very good point. I'll try it. Thanks.

Re SCOTUS:
I have a  hunch that there will be a surprise with Amy Coney Barrett. I don't know what the surprise will be, but for weeks now I've had this feeling.

I hope you are right and it is a very good surprise.

FYI:  surprises can be good or bad...or even really bad! :o

Many Democrats are assuming that Justice Barrett will be terrible for the ACA and gay rights. I understand their concern, but things may not go as they assume. Virtually anything would be better than what some are assuming.

Jeannie do you think it will matter if I begin the series with this book?

It's not a series. I think all his books are stand-alones. But I must warn you that it's a murder mystery and yes, the sisters are killed. Not so happy in that respect.

I read mysteries.  Since Freyja is killed I think I will pass ;D

Oh, but she doesn’t die until the final page when you find out she killed all of the others (and her sister).

TOD:

I’ve lost too many friends in the restaurant biz to keep track of. My favorite Italian restaurant is probably the hardest to bear. They were among the smart ones who got out at the beginning of the pandemic. The ones who are operating on a smaller scale could disappear at any moment. But as I’ve cut my circle back, I’m eating out less and less, and cooking more.

I think what scares me most about covid is the threat of the loss of smell and taste.

I have not read of anyone who said their sense of small and taste did not return.

It did not return for any of the dead people.

They can't get rid of anyone but the CAN add two liberal judges to even things out.  That loophole is absolutely doable.

Or someone could just kill the three oldest conservative judges.
