Title: A TALE OF TWO OPERAS
Post by: bk on November 21, 2020, 12:05:27 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes told two tales, and now it is time for you to post until the operatic cows come home.

Well, Stella survived her Day of Terror and spent the night curled up beside me. I had forgiven her by the time I returned from the pharmacy, and she watched the soaps with me and Thatch.

Last night I dragged out the catnip, and I had two stoned cats on my hands.  Annabelle had no reaction, but Stella and Thatch went on a trip during which they wrestled maniacally, Thatch tried to eat a pillow, and Stella discovered that a non-stoned Annabelle was no fun at all.

DR vixmom, your Thanksgiving sounds very intimate and peaceful.  Enjoy your pies.  In our family, the pies were always pumpkin and pecan, which were the same for Christmas, with the addition of my Aunt Dorothy's mince pies, which my mother's huge family either loved or loathed.

This is why I fret so over the NYC ACC's behavior to animals in their "care":

And here's Blue's adoption video before they decided to kill him.  He's so adorable!

We had thought, very briefly, of trying a prepared Thanksgiving dinner, and found it inordinately expensive while still requiring quite a bit of work. I mean, it’s not like a team of tuxedoed waiters brings in this steaming hot covered silver platter, sets an elegant table for you, and starts carving.

I love preparing the side dishes, anyway, so we then considered bringing in just the prepared turkey breast, maybe even two so we’d have plenty later on. We ended up nixing that, too, so we’re getting a small turkey and will do what we’ve always done. A tradition survives another year.

I like DR Elmore’s family’s tradition of the two pies, with the addition of the mince pie. It don’t get no better than that.

Were they still authentic mince meat pies then? We had them, too, and I was the kid who always loved them. But I have no idea now which ours were. Which sadly means I have no idea whether I’ve had a real mince meat pie. And isn’t that a fine kettle of fish.

I’m happy to hear about Stella. And isn’t an occasional evening of catnip an incredible thing?

Some cats just don’t react to it, although a different blend or a little spray bottle of the essence could produce different results. We had some of the spray that was pricey but reliably potent and fast acting. I wonder if there’s any left.

She called them "mince meat," but there was no meat in them at all.  Much as I loved my Aunt Dorothy, I really detested them.  My mother, who was  an erratic cook, made excellent pie crusts and her pies - whether apple, cherry, pumpkin, pecan, or banana cream (my Dad's fave) - were either prize winners or fit only for the garbage.  There was never an in-between.

I needed to remind myself about mincemeat. Here is what Wikipedia says:

Mincemeat is a mixture of chopped dried fruit, distilled spirits and spices, and sometimes beef suet, beef, or venison. Originally, mincemeat always contained meat. Many modern recipes contain beef suet, though vegetable shortening is sometimes used in its place.

Ours were called that, too. I have one close family member left who might remember who made those and whether they contained meat. I’ll send a note today. I see there are still pie fillings sold that contain at least some vestige of beef.

I think my love for the raisin (and sour cream?) pie at House of Pies in L.A. must explain why I would have liked the mince pies as a kid.

Igor Stravinsky

Kurt Weill
Maurice Ravel
Leonard Bernstein
Gian Carlo Menotti
George Gershwin

I know I'm leaving out other great composers, but for an off-the-cuff list of favorites as I sit here typing, this is what came out of my fingers.

I did try to include favorite pieces. In a few cases, that's easy. For others, there'd be no end to it.

Browsing the menu for the last remaining House of Pies, I see no Sour Cream Raisin (which is what I think it was) that I ate in the 1970s. I wonder if they ever have it as a special. House of Pies is the only place I've ever had that. Maybe I should just find a recipe that looks right and try making one. I'm not even a pie maker, but I'm entertaining that thought.

I also glanced over their other foods and for some reason the Patty Melt jumped out at me, even though I really don't remember having burgers and such there in those days. Well, let's just know one thing:  if a Patty Melt really had jumped out at me, it would be gone now.

Now I'm really wondering about the 1970s menu.

BK:  Did House of Pies have a selection of sandwiches and burgers back then? The more I think about this, the less I'm trusting my memory.

The great majority of my House of Pie visits would have been at Hollywood and Whitley, and I just know that many pies and coffees were consumed there.

Banana cream would have been another of my favorites. I just love raisins and bananas. What can I say.

I just got notification that my two Hansels and two Gretels are in my mailbox. That's amazing, since they were originally estimated to arrive by the 25th, then that changed to definitely the 23rd, and here they are on the 21st.

You know something I love? I'll tell you. I love it when I automatically check Amazon for something, find it okay and very nearly buy it, but then I think to look on eBay and I find even better deals on the same brand new items for even less money, with shipping included, and they get here just as fast if not faster than Amazon sometimes. That's something I love.

And now if you'll excuse me, I need to put shoes on and make a little trip to the mailbox.

I meant to say this the other day when we were talking about it:

DR Elmore, I'll be happy to transfer that Fiedler Nutcracker to digital as soon as I fix whatever the problem is in one or both of my turntables. (They each have an issue that should be easy to resolve when I can take the time to actually get into them.)

I could do it now on one of them, but there's hum and associated noise in one channel which is unacceptable. I went ahead with it on the Prince/Bernstein album for BK because we had to hear the stereo on that one, posthaste. But the problem will be fixed.

The book club was going well as I was keeping pace with my niece. But once she had to return her library book I ended up having to finish my copy and give mine to her.  And she hasn't read in more than a week. She said that she would finish this weekend. So i'm hoping that she does that.

You were discussing the book as you read it until waiting until the end.  That sounds like great fun.  Too bad she couldn't renew it instead of returning it.

Yes that was definitely a bummer. It was much better to read it at her pace.

DR Jane the book that my niece chose was Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson. It's a YA mystery.

If your niece ever finishes the first book might you read the rest of the series together?

I think so. So today I saw her and asked her when we should have our next book club meeting?  And she was like "oh i thought we were done with that since you already finished the book." :)  I told her I took notes and would discuss it with her when she finished.

I think that we will continue the series if she likes this one.

That's cute.  I hope your book discussions continue for a long time.

I'm up, I'm up - six hours of sleep, had a lovely breakfast at Jinky's - eggs benedict and home fries, so not that light, but I'll be good later and just have a low-cal frozen dinner - picked up stuff at the mail place, and came home, went to use the computer and no trackpad.  I of course panicked because I can't use the computer without it - I do have an extra, which I plugged in but that wouldn't work - I think I forgot to actually turn it on :)  I was about to go to the garbage can outside to see if she threw it out, and I texted her but she didn't respond at that point.  I told her long ago she could not touch anything near the computer ever.  But I happened to look at a small pile of papers and CDs that sit in back of one of the speakers and I lifted the pile and there it was, buried under all that stuff.  We just had a conversation about it and she promises she won't touch anything on the computer table.  I told her she could clean AROUND things but not move or touch anything.

So, two wonderful discoveries today:

1. The 1954 stop motion "opera fantasy" film of Hansel and Gretel. It's been a busy afternoon and evening and I didn't have it in me to watch anything tonight. But I had to see what this looks like, so I watched half a minute or so at each chapter stop, lingering here and there. My first impression is that it is utterly charming, and every bit as captivating as the classic Rankin/Bass works -- if not more so, given the opera score and its overall design. I look forward to watching it closely during Thanksgiving week.

The transfer is primitive. It's watchable, but it looks and sounds in every respect like an early VHS tape. This film has no business not being available in best possible quality. I'd be tempted to bring it up on the HTF to see if those with the means of doing so might investigate ownership and materials and the possibility, however remote, of anything happening with it.

Title: Re: A TALE OF TWO OPERAS
Post by: ChasSmith on November 21, 2020, 08:05:57 PM
2. The opera itself, as captured in the Met's 1982 Christmas Day telecast. Oh my god, what a beautiful score! And I don't have one here to look at. That shall be rectified. Again, I just skipped and sampled my way through it, but this will be thoroughly digested this week as well.

I, too, would like to see it performed with younger leads, but Blegen and von Stade are wonderful as is Rosalind Elias. And what a trip back to the early '80s at the Met. (Credits like "Gil Wechsler, Lighting" are burned into my brain.) It looks and sounds like everyone's at the top of their game here.

This video, too, is a bit primitive looking compared to their later telecasts, but it is what it is. However, the execution is great. During the really lovely overture, the orchestra is exceptionally well captured by the video cameras. It's almost more satisfyingly executed than in later performances. I was also blown away at the sight of two players I'd known to some extent in school, barely ten years after we'd all left Cleveland. Here, they looked like Cleveland was just yesterday. But I digress! For me, one piece of bad news. Someone had the brilliant idea after the opening passages in the overture to cut away from the orchestra and show costume designs while the music played. At first I thought we might be seeing something the audience was seeing. But no. It was like watching a dull picture "gallery" as an extra on a DVD. We don't get back to the orchestra until the final passages of the overture. Did they think that because this attracts so many families that the kiddies would get bored watching people play? Oy. A thousand times Oy.

As good as Denver's songs are, and they can be very good, there were some repetitive themes. Several songs about sunshine, several songs about Colorado and the Rocky Mountains, several songs about missing home, several songs with "high" used, several songs with any or all of the above. When you put them all on top of each other, they began to blend into one big, long song.

If my grandmother has poured some booze into the mince meat, I might have liked it.  She just complained that she didn’t have any venison to add to the pie.

Alban Berg
Arnold Schoenberg
Igor Stravinsky
Benjamin Britten

Congrats on the quick arrival!  And I always try to remember (a Fantasticks reference ;) ) to search at least both places, if not others, because I've certainly gotten some deals from the other website when first searching one.

  one big, long song.

One of my most favorite overheard audience comments was a concert-goer, emerging from a complete performance of Handel's Messiah, exclaiming, "Boy, that was a long song!"

Tomorrow I will be attending (online) Tacoma Musical Playhouse’s production of ASSISTED LIVING: THE MUSICAL.  My friends, Sharry and Micheal, and my other friend Frank are three of the four members of the musical review. The ticket cost me twenty-seven bucks, so I hope I can figure out how to stream it on my computer.

Just had an hour-long telephonic conversation with a good friend from college that I had lost touch with. Felt so good!!

Yup...but that's on HULU (https://hellogiggles.com/news/kirsten-stewart-gay-holiday-rom-com-happiest-season/), which I don't have.
