Title: THE FIRST 100 PAGES
Post by: bk on January 08, 2021, 12:32:09 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes weren't 100 pages, and now it is time for you to post until the first 100 cows come home.

I got some fun ideas in the shower, so ended up writing a total of seventeen pages. Now I should go to bed.

I had a terrible night of sleep.  The problem wasn't marauding cats, for a change, but my body's aches, pains, and over-active bladder. perhaps TMI.

DR Geprge, I am aware there are twelve days to Biden's inauguration, but the events of the Jan. 6 have done in Trump's Reign of Terror.  His speech yesterday, condemning "his" followers and insurrectionists, was clearly forced on him after his video appearance the day before proclaiming his love for the terrorists, and a lot of White House ships have suddenly deserted a sinking rat.

The twitter replies have not been kind.

BK, with your interest in mittel-European opera, have you turned your attention to Russian opera?  I think you might enjoy these.

I am crazy about Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin.  I got to see Mirella Freni's portrayal of Tatiana, and she's so wonderful in the role.  I like this DG recording quite a l;ot.

I've seen Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk onstage and on video, but I have never listened to it, so you might prefer another recording, but I think Shostakovich's blend of satire and erotomania is quite fascinating.  I was really surprised by the last Met production by the number of nude men onstage, but it was apropos for the leading lady's sexual frustration.

Prokofiev's The Love for Three Oranges was first performed in French by Mary Garden's opera company, so I prefer it in that language.  There's a CD available in a translation by Tom Stoppard as well.  The opera is a combo of commedia dell'arte, fairy tale, and satire.

Mussorgsky's great Boris Godunov, not spy Boris Badunov of Rocky and Bullwinkle fame, has been revised by both Rimsky-Korsakov and Shostakovich, and there is also a huge 3-CD set of several versions of Mussorgsky's original work,  It was Rimsky-Korsakov's version that made the opera popular, and Karajan and company do it with all the glitter and glory possible.  The Coronation Scene is glorious.

While browsing Facebook yesterday, I had the feeling that they were laying off and allowing a bit more leeway on what people were posting.

Perhaps I was mistaken. There's a LOT of political stuff I don't see.

Sorry to hear that, DR Elmore. I suspect, as do others, that you have your own special stalker who keeps up with what you're posting, and who does the Lord's work accordingly.

Thank you MR BK for answering my question.....whenever L/S is on I always check the listings so I don't miss one of your episodes....and my other favorites:

Betty, Please and others......

I was just thinking the other day - if Happy Days had been canceled instead of being switched to a three-camera show - we wouldn't have had Laverne & Shirley OR Mork & Mindy.....or Joanie Loves Chachi - but that would be a smaller loss.

It’s time to get down to business as love-focused Venus enters serious Capricorn today. You put the effort into other areas of your life, like your career and friendships, right, so why do you expect love to just “happen?” Most people know that the secret to long-lasting and happy relationships is to put in the work—and that’s exactly what this transit is going to help you do.

Are you up for the challenge? Part of taking advantage of this hardworking energy is getting your mind right and deciding once and for all that you deserve the best that love has to offer. Once you decide to make an effort, there’s no limit to the happiness you can achieve. Don’t be afraid to tackle the tough stuff—with this energy surrounding you, there’s nowhere to go but up.

I don't know if anyone would be interested, but I just discovered on YouTube but I just discovered a delightful French production of Offenbach's opera-bouffe, La Belle Héléne, from 1986. Act One covers the arrival of Trojan prince Paris to Sparta, his meeting Helen and winning a contest of wit and intellect, and corrupt priest Calchas' sending her husband Menelaus off to Crete to appease the gods so Helen and Paris can fall in love.  Act Two covers the seduction and Menelaus' return to find Paris and Helen together.  Act Three takes place on the beach after the goddess Venus has sent a curse on the populace, The priest of Venus arrives and says Helen must go to Cythera to appeal to the goddess.  When she discovers the priest is Paris in disguise, she elopes with him.

Health and coping vibes to TCB.

The NY Times has published a number of breathing exercises over the past several months to help with Covid or just strengthen the lungs in general. I've been doing one of them. It only takes a few minutes and is easy to do. Or perhaps one of your doctors can recommend one or two. I find that it helps to feel that I'm taking action.

I've been watching BRIDGERTON on Netflix streaming. It's one of those things that didn't look interesting to me at first, but I tried it and liked it. It's very popular and I can see why. A lavish period drama, full of great costumes and sets. (Where did they get those fabrics?) None of the substance of DOWNTON ABBEY, but quite entertaining just the same. Many British actors known to me, but also many fine ones who were not. It's light and a good antidote to the times.

Jane, have you read any Rosamund Pilcher? I find her books very comforting. Her characters go through difficult times, but things generally work out. There's a warm to her books. I highly recommend both COMING HOME and WINTER SOLSTICE.

I have read a number of her books.  Thanks for the suggestion.

I am slowly reading Greenwillow.  I need more sleep though.  The slowness is due to the fact I had to purchase it from Kindle which doesn't get dim enough on my app and bothers my eyes.

Oh, you were speaking of astrology!  I thought I got my wires crossed with THE 700 CLUB.
