Well, you've read the notes, the notes ate too much, and now it is time for you to post until the overeating cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: VARDY!
-
Topic of the Day: my favorite was the ChocoTaco. I also really liked fudge bars, or some banana flavored thing that I don't remember what it specifically was...just that it was banana flavored. :)
-
I'm back to work today.
Have a good day, all!
-
Good morning.
-
ME, looking at the coffee table: "Hey, when did these scratches appear?"
DH: "It's the duressed look.
ME: "Dear, I think the word you're looking for is 'distressed'."
DH: "Yes. That."
-
Apropos today's notes: I thought it was Project ONE that was being taped this week?
-
Good morning, all!
-
Yesterday, I could barely keep my eyes open. Around 6:00, I thought I was getting sick, and around 8:30 I turned out the lights and went to bed. I had a weird night of dreams but I slept pretty soundly.
-
I had a long dream in which I was in London with DR Ginny and Richard for the opening of a show starring my dear friend Annalene Beechey. I ran off to check out London, and then had a horrible time getting back.
-
In another I was shopping in a store like the late great Patelson's Music Store on West 56th Street, as they were closing it up for good.
-
In the last, I was working on a film and Robert Wagner and some blond actress were playing in the snow with Santa hats and singing "White Christmas" to Bing Crosby's track.
-
I accomplished nothing over the weekend, so I've got work on Oh, Boy! and a couple of bills to pay today.
-
The man my mother's sister Ruth married was the man she was dating before WW2. He had been a Japanese prisoner of war and survived the Bataan Death March. By the time he was freed and returned to Ohio, he was a physical and mental mess. In retrospect I honestly think she should have never married him because of his problems. If he were alive today, he would most likely be an ardent Trump supporter, as his one living daughter is.
I think to the rest of my mother's siblings he was considered "odd," but my perspective is that he was truly deranged. He read and passed out anti-semitic literature like "FDR and the Jews Ruin America" and my parents quietly bundled up the crap he passed out and threw it away.
-
I grew up, and went to grade school, in a very white, very Christian part of Middletown, OH. I think there were no more than 5-10 jewish kids who went to school with me, and there were probably less Catholics since they were all in parochial schools. I remember, sometime around the third grade, finding it sad that the jewish students had to perform in Christmas programs while no one paid at least a reference to Hanukka.
My mother, to her credit, was one of the parents who opposed an attempted coup when I was in fifth grade to remove from Wilson School its first black teacher, Hattie Holmes, who taught me French and whom I loved. Still do. I never went to school with a black student until I was in junior high school.
-
And that's enough Moore Family History for today.
-
Good morning to all and I wish you a very safe weekend.
-
Good morning, all.
-
The town i grew up in was mostly Italian and Jewish.
-
The schools all close every September in honor of Ross Hashannah and Yom Kippur
-
And there was always a menorah as well as Christmas decorations
-
We usually sang "Dreidle, Dreidle, Driedle" at our holiday concerts but I can't remember if there were any other songs in recognition of Hanukkah
-
And our grocery stores have always dedicated an aisle (well at least one side) for kosher goods before Passover
-
The town synagogue was 3 blocks from my house, right across the street from my elementary school
-
We had snow in Austin yesterday.
Our neighbor built a snow man.
My dog: He didn't know what to make if it.
-
T.O.D.
Rocky Road.
-
The rabbi was Gabriel Maza, comedian Jackie Mason's bbrother
-
I wasn't aware of anti semitism growing up but in retrospect I am sure it existed
-
I was very aware of prejudice against people of color however.
-
There was a specific section of town where they lived. In the mid 1980's when I was selling real estate i was told which blocks were "appropriate" for showing to various clients.
-
I was appalled
-
I knew they mostly lived in one area but it had never occurred to me that it was because they were kept from living anywhere else.
-
I just checked the closest location to get the Covid-19 vaccine. It's literally three doors from my pharmacy.
-
That's great, DR elmore3003.
-
True story: Growing up, my grandparents lived near Allentown, PA.
I always thought that Roger Whittaker song was about how he was gonna leave old Allentown.
-
Good morning, all.
-
For those who haven't gotten the memo, I should like to point out that it's a Monday.
-
Monday!
Filming vibes for MR BK & Co.
-
I watched the 1969 movie THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE. I feel like I lived through it......it was quite a slog.
I liked it better when Alfalfa recited it with firecrackers in his back pocket.
-
I always got a DreamCycle from the ice cream man.....vanilla ice cream wrapped in orange sherbet.
-
My Covid stimulus payment paid for my copy of the new Anyone Can Whistle recording, which arrived on Saturday. The first thing I did was to destroy the cardboard box with some of the most unattractive artwork I have ever seen on a recording in which the two CDs were encased.
-
For some reason, ice cream trucks seldom came through our subdivision. My brothers and I usually got ice cream when we went to market with mom. I usually got a Drumstick, but I did love creamsickles.
-
Today was telephone day.
I called the garage to tell them my car would be there at 12:30 p.m.
I called my oncologist's office to make my six-month check up appointment.....it will be January 26 at 12:30 p.m.
AND I called the Summers Heating & Cooling to tell them to STOP sending me invoices and to stop calling me because I was not interested in renewing my Service Plan. I just said I couldn't afford it. She was quite nice and told me I could pay it monthly and have it come out of my bank account $11.99 each time. I decided not the try to explain to her that it was still the same money however it was paid......
-
Can I ask you, please, to sign this petition?
https://animalpetitions.org/949957/demand-actor-answer-allegations-he-killed-stray-dogs-for-movie-research/
-
I watched DR DRUXY and Elvis Presley in It Happened At The World's Fair last night on TCM OnDEMAND.
-
T.O.D.
Rocky Road.
I love Rocky Road so much that when I was 5, I named our new dog Rocky. His coloring was similar.
-
I'll probably be reminded of others as the day goes on, but:
Drumsticks
Ice cream sandwiches
Chocolate covered vanilla bars
Fudgesicles, Creamsicles
Was (is) "King Cone" the name brand of a drumstick? That's the only one of these things I can recall having as an adult, and that type of thing would definitely be my favorite. I do still love good ice cream cones.
Chocolate covered bars are delicious, of course (I'm thinking modern day Dove Bars?), but they're so damned messy. Or I just never learned the proper technique.
-
Good morning!
-
On this trip to Louisville, I have introduced Mom to creamsicles. She’s hooked. I feel My work here is done.
-
I will likely have an ice cream sandwich or two on the ride home tomorrow.
-
Monday morning greetings! My sister, niece, and I have been busy online this morning registering for a 2-day virtual crafting event that will take place in March. We have 2 weekends in a row lined up, with 2 different companies.
-
TOD - We had a Good Humor truck in our neighborhood and I loved the 2-stick popsicles that were different fruit flavors. We'd yell "Waaaaiiiiit a second" when we wanted the driver to stop and until very late in her life my mother could mimic our chant perfectly.
-
I had a long dream in which I was in London with DR Ginny and Richard for the opening of a show starring my dear friend Annalene Beechey. I ran off to check out London, and then had a horrible time getting back.
Sorry you got lost in London, DR Elmore, but otherwise we had a great time...
-
Here's what I have to say about tonight's college football championship:
Roll, Tide!
-
Can we declare this Friday and have another weekend?
-
DR CHAS SMITH the drumsticks were called a Nutty Buddy
-
If It was the Good Humor truck and I had enough money I’d get the one ice cream bar with the fudge candy in the middle
If it were bungalow bar or hood I would get a Mario’s chocolate Italian ice
It it were Mr. Softee I’d get a twist
-
My phone call today was to Adam Schiff's office. There are two new House members I want to see evicted:
1. Barry Moore, who tweeted over the weekend that there were more punishments for stealing a podium from the Capitol than for election fraud.
2. Lauren Boebert, a gun-totin' QAnon idiot who was supposedly tweeting Nancy Pelosi's location to the terrorists.
-
I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep.
-
I'll be interested in elmore's opinion of Anyone Can Whistle.
-
Good Afternoon. Nothing much happening today. Kids are back on campus, but our Distance Learning list is bigger. Mostly parents taking advantage of the situation, I'm sure. Not the fear of getting infected. Having a choice means they can go to school anywhere with an internet connection - which enables them to go their mountain or desert 2nd home, or go skiing in Wyoming. I'm not bitter, no - not me.
-
Page 3 Dance. Probably the Macarena which the PE Teacher has been known to do with the kids right outside my window
-
I'll be interested in elmore's opinion of Anyone Can Whistle.
I haven't had a chance to listen yet. Yesterday was a good day, but I couldn't get my energy up to it.
-

ChasSmith, there is a proper technique to eating chocolate covered bars and to discover it, all it takes is practice...lots and lots of practice! ;)
-
I'll be interested in elmore's opinion of Anyone Can Whistle.
Me, three!
-
If I were - that would be the EXTENT of my interest in Anyone Can Whistle.
-
Cold today but no snow....
Car is at the shop for body work......3-4 days. So we shall see.
I have not been stimulated yet.
-
I was tired enough to actually fall right to sleep last night. Maybe I will get lucky and have a repeat performance ;)
-
From DR TCB:
It still boggles my mind, at the age of 70, how naive I was regarding so many things. In particular, I can’t believe that growing up I was so unaware of anti-semitism.
Unless you had Jewish friends that talked about it, I can understand this. I don't suppose you read or watched Gentleman's Agreement?
I am trying to think of other books I read, or movies I watched, that dealt with the subject in America.
-
DR Jrand70, this should give you nightmares.

From DR George:
My mom was born in Germany in 1942. We've never talked about that. :-\
Maybe now is the time to do so.
-
When I first began to learn what had happened in Germany I asked my father if any of his family had died. I was fairly young and he didn't have the heart to tell me they all did. all but one that he knew of. The real number was two survived. My father told me no one died and I was too young to ask more questions.

There was a specific section of town where they lived. In the mid 1980's when I was selling real estate i was told which blocks were "appropriate" for showing to various clients.
When I was in high school neighbors moved in across the street and we became close. The wife was a fairly new realtor and asked me about the percentage of blacks in the school. Since the Catholic kids, including her daughter, went to their schools, that left the public schools in our area with mostly Jewish kids, some Christians, and some Blacks.
shocked with clients that wanted to avoid the schools due to too many of one or the other group. She ended up leaving that particular real estate office because they lied about the districts to the clients. Today you cannot pretend a house is in a school district when it isn't.
We had an interesting discussion about it, and were also sorry it was needed.
-
I knew they mostly lived in one area but it had never occurred to me that it was because they were kept from living anywhere else.
I recall how shocking it was to learn that.

I forgot about the cherry popsicles I enjoyed on a hot summer day.
-
The joys of chasing the Good Humor truck, almost as good as catching the Helms truck.
-
Drumsticks
-
Ice cream sandwiches
-
An occasional sundae in a cup.
-
I just read that Good Humor invented the ice cream on a stick.
-
Who invented fried ice cream on a stick?

LOL. I have no clue or care.

Futzed and finessed. Made some bow tie pasta with butter, cheese, and onions and ate that. And wrote four new pages. Taking a little break and then will go pick up whatever there is to pick up.

Hello, everyone.
-
I don't recall what my favorite ice creams flavors were as a child. I suspect I liked most of them. Even then, I liked chocolate and vanilla together, which is still one of my favorites.
As a younger adult once I tried Swensen's German Chocolate Cake ice cream I became quite addicted. I don't think Swensen's is still around, and I haven't had it in years, but it would still probably be my favorite.
(A quick check says that Swensen's is only available in San Francisco.)
-
My father had a raging sweet tooth and loved vanilla ice cream with maple syrup.
-
I was very aware of anti-Semitism and racism growing up. Culver City was all white at the time. I, too, was shocked when I learned that the real estate agents had kept it that way. There was one black boy in my high school, but I never met him. I suspect he purposely kept a low profile and we didn't have any classes together.
-
Most of my friends were Jewish. There was a Jewish family living next door and they had a daughter about my age. Her friends became my friends. The Jewish families were very kind to me. Once I was at a friend's house and a B'nai Brith meeting was going to be held there soon. My friend's mother told me I was welcome to stay, even though she knew I wasn't Jewish. I was very touched that she would include me. I didn't stay, but I've never forgotten it.
-
My parents had friends they thought highly of who were Jewish, yet they'd always say, "He's Jewish." Same with my friends. I was very aware from an early age of the distinction they made. They never told me I couldn't be friends with Jewish kids, but the prejudice was obvious.
I've always been selective with my friends and based my selections on factors other than religion. I'm quite adamant that that choice is mine and mine alone, and I imagine that this is where that came from.
-
As for color, oh my God! I loved my father, but I hated his racism. As far back as I can remember I loved both Lena Horne and Ella Fitzgerald, but especially Lena. Every time they appeared on TV my dad would make a crack about race. It really drove a wedge between my parents and I.
-
Even though I saw race riots in the South on TV in high school, I thought of segregation as something in the past. It was when I moved to Alexandria, VA and saw schools which were formerly all white or all black that it came home to me that segregation existed in my lifetime, just not my community. It was a shock. When my friend Jan from next door visited I pointed this out and she was shocked, too.

They have a website. I recall when they opened up in Beverly Hills and were all the rage. I liked the mocha almond fudge. I much preferred Baskin Robbins.
-
I feel that kids are better off growing up with children of diverse backgrounds than growing up in a white (or other) ghetto. I'm very grateful for growing up around lots of Jewish families. It was an enriching experience.
-

My only issue with a person's religion is if they try to convert me. Fortunately that never happened until I was an adult.

This is sad. While my parents had their prejudices they taught me to be respectful to all people and treat them well. They never judged a performer by their race, thank goodness since they are the ones who took me to see Ella.

Yes, the evangelism. Kids are so accepting. It's been a real challenge to me at times to tell Jehovah's Witnesses to never come here again! But in a way that I feel comfortable with. The last time I did that I asked if they had something like a Do Not Call list. They do! I asked to be put on it and haven't been bothered by them since.

Maybe John G can weigh in on the differences between ice cream brands. Or George can conduct a meticulous study.

TTFN.

Keith's favorite flavor was vanilla and I would tell him to get something different at BR's. I don't think the quality is good enough for vanilla. I think their chocolate is the best and no one does almost grated chocolate as their chocolate chip. I think it is the flavors I like about their ice cream, plus I mostly don't find it too sweet.
I think Curries Ice Cream was a better quality. Their ice cream cakes were much better.

A do not call list, I had no idea.
When we lived in Pennsylvania JW, or some other Christian group, stopped at our house. They were nice & friendly and were fine when I told them I was Jewish and not converting. Still they kept stopping by. Years late I mentioned them and Bryan said he just thought they were friends of mine visiting ;D I guess he was too young to wonder why they were never invited inside.
-
I have called and sent an email request to my house representative. After I sent the email this immediately popped up on her website:
"Thank you for contacting my office. Your concerns, thoughts and questions are important to me. Due to the volume of mail I receive, please allow time for my staff and me to read and respond to your message. I will work to respond as quickly as possible."
I realize it is after hours but I suspect she has been overwhelmed with messages since the 6th.

Yes, project one :)

Eight pages, and taking at least an hour break.

Unless a particular brand is really bad, I don't mind something that's not quite as good as the best, so no meticulous study from me! ;D

Cleaning up after dinner, I heard the sound of running water, and immediately knew... it was happening again.
Water pouring into our bathroom from the unit above through the ceiling. This is the 6th time it has happened.
We are perturbed.
The building's management just can't seem to figure out what the problem might be.

I'm too annoyed to do a page five dance.

The kind of homework I like. When I was at the paper, I organized a blind tasting of 20 vanilla ice creams. It’s amazing how different they can be when you have them side by side. I think the winners were not a surprise to us. First place was an organic vanilla made by the local gourmet grocery chain. Second was Blue Bell. Breyer’s was in the top five or so. Haagen Dazs (sp?) wasn’t much further behind. The cheap local grocery knockoff was toward the bottom. In other words, you do pay for better, but not all pricey ice creams are equal either.

My father had been like this, but he managed to change quite a bit, if not completely before he died. He had been so ingrained with Southern lies about the noble lost cause (vomit) that he never could believe he was fed anything but the truth. Such brainwashing.
-
I’m off to bed.
-
Good night, all.
-
I can't ever remember anytime that either of my parents had said anything racist or sexist or whatever...not that they were perfect, but I don't remember that kind of offensive talk. Which is good because my ex-boyfriend was born and raised in Pakistan. ;) I've never felt that a person's ethnicity or religion had any baring on whether they were a good person.
-
Break time done.
-
Went to Gelson's and got a small Caesar, as the pasta wasn't all that much. Ate that. And have done thirteen pages so far and will do the rest after I post the notes. Only two or three to go.

I think the Häagen-Dazs vanilla bean is superior to their regular vanilla. I also place their vanilla above Breyer's and Blue Bell. I suppose I need to do a blind taste.

Ice cream should also soften some and not be too cold in order to fully enjoy the texture and flavor.

As for color, oh my God! I loved my father, but I hated his racism. As far back as I can remember I loved both Lena Horne and Ella Fitzgerald, but especially Lena. Every time they appeared on TV my dad would make a crack about race. It really drove a wedge between my parents and I.
My father had been like this, but he managed to change quite a bit, if not completely before he died. He had been so ingrained with Southern lies about the noble lost cause (vomit) that he never could believe he was fed anything but the truth. Such brainwashing.

Just heard on the local news:
”Coming up, the latest peach on the impushment.”
-
I tried to watch the ABC special “24 HOURS: The Assault on the Capitol” available only on Hulu, but I lost the connection about six times before giving up. It looks very good, of what I saw.

Sounds interesting, but I don't have Hulu.

Hi, Tom and Jane.

Cold today but no snow....
Car is at the shop for body work......3-4 days. So we shall see.
I have not been stimulated yet.
Neither have I. I should have had direct deposit, but it says my check was mailed on January 6 (apparently sent by pony express).

When I heard about the movie, I couldn’t figure out what they were talking about. So, I never watched it.

DR Jrand70, this should give you nightmares.

The joys of chasing the Good Humor truck, almost as good as catching the Helms truck.
Was that the mayonnaise truck?
