I turned off the lights at 9:00, fell into a nice sleep and was rudely awakened at 10:36 by my cell phone.  It was my neurotic neighbor Judy, which really pissed me off.  I have no idea what she wanted, nor do I care since I hung up the phone and tried to get back to sleep, but I was so irritated that I slept poorly the remainder of the night.

This is laundry day, so I need to get started.  Along with that, I have to print and fill out a Covid-19 consent form for next Tuesday's vaccination and prepare a couple of packages for tomorrow's trip to the post office and pharmacy.

On my way to the laundry room, I took the garbage from last night and this morning to the closet holding the chute to the trash compactor only to find it bolted shut and no longer available for use.  I have no idea now what we are to do, and of course our shitty building management has told us nothing about their new policy.

I suspect this was the reason for my neighbor's 10:30 call last night, but I also suspect she's the reason the chute is closed to residents.  We have been advised for years to not throw paper down the chute and someone opn my fl;oor continues to clog it with tons of wet paper.  I have only one suspect.

TOD

I don’t know what might be in the player today, but last night on a whim I watched Martin Scorsese’s After Hours. It’s an oddball movie with an amazing cast. I think this was only my third time to see it. I saw it when it was released in 1985, and loved it, but didn’t see it again until I got the DVD, whenever that was.

No, but some of the new tenants are complete pigs!  They leave the area for the recyclables a mess every day.

So here's the little announcement I couldn't make till now:

State regulations pending, and of course that's a big unknown at this point, I have my first post-Covid gig lined up. If it all works out, I'll be MDing and playing my first ever FANTASTICKS in a cozy 110-seat house that's perfect for it. We've secured the rights for the dates we want (mid-Sept thru early-Oct), and all that needs to happen now is every single thing going perfectly between now and then:  Covid regulations that make it doable, people showing up (vaccinated) to audition, people buying tickets for something they can't watch online, etc. And, oh yeah, I have to start practicing.

I have told this story before, but I had a brief encounter with McMurtry at his massive bookstore complex in Archer City, which a friend and I visited on a pilgrimage. It was called Thalia in the five or six Last Picture Show novels. Signs were everywhere not to talk to him, don’t ask for autographs, etc. Sure. Got it. Then I saw him wheeling a cart around laden with books and shelving them. I had so say something without getting him upset. So I asked him where I’d find the novels of Zora Neale Hurston and Dawn Powell there. He gave me an odd look, like, why would I want to read those writers, or maybe he was thinking about where they were. He did direct me to two places, both were right. I thanked him, and that was that.

Congrats!  The score is very fulfilling to play, but it has its moments.  Harvey Schmidt was brilliant for someone who doesn't read music, and sometimes that's evident in some of the arrangements.  I hope the theatre can afford a harp - that will make your job easier - but I wouldn't use any more than piano and harp!

I made my pilgrimage in May 2008, taking an extra day for it while on a visit to my job headquarters in Carrollton. Spent several hours there going through the four stores, picking up a few things, walking through the shell of the Royal theater, driving all around town, eating at the Dairy Queen, then spending a little more time in store #1 hoping against hope that he might show up. He didn't, and I didn't ask. But while I was paying for my stuff, I saw a couple of postcards or something about the place and added those to my purchase, and one of the women said, "oh, it makes him so happy whenever someone wants those".

Thanks for the kind words, and I totally agree. I insisted on being permitted to hire a harpist. They're used to paying for a few musicians for each show, anyway, and they can damned well pay for that one.

So the search is on. The one person I knew, who's beyond incredible and has played four productions of it, would love to have said yes, but she'll be in Switzerland working on her Master's program. I've got others to contact.

Congrats, ChasSmith!!  And Break Legs!! :D I love that show...except when the "director" adds mothers [which I've seen twice (different productions by the same "director")]. :P

Back in the 1990s, I ran follow spot for a local production (performed as written) and I'm pretty sure that we had a harp.  All the performers were really good. :)

The Fantastiks brings back such good memories , I ran one of the follow spots during the our production my first semester of college

And taking the then young Vixter to see the  revival in NYC, ending up with front row center seats that required we tuck our feet under our chairs to avoid tripping the actors.

At one point confetti shot out of cannons and one of the actors gathered up and armful from the floor and dumped in all the Vixters lap, to her great delight.

We were there with former  DR William F. Orr.

During intermission we discovered Elmore was also in the audience (I forget who you were with) and after the show he kindly introduced us to the actor who was  playing Henry,  the ‘old actor”, none other than Mr.Tom Jones himself!!

That's great. I'm sorry I had Tom sign my LP jacket instead of either my score or the show poster with my name on it (that was really dumb). His inscription is great, but it would have been nicer on something else.

Is the film score in manuscript? (Just curious. Always love handwritten scores.)

Great news, DR ChasSmith! When I did Harvey's and Tom's Mirette at Goodspeed, we could not get a Connecticut harpist.  They were all happier playing weddings and Sunday brunches, so the two harpists alternating on The Fantasticks at Sullivan Street alternated weeks at Goodspeed.

OMG, what a story! Which year was that?
That arrangement must have cost Goodspeed a bloody fortune. That's absolutely incredible.

If you don't mind, I'd love to relate that story to this gal here just to get her reaction. Or maybe I'd better not jinx my own chances at stealing someone away from those weddings and brunches. Oh, man. That's amazing.

DR TCB to answer your question last night....

At this point if we changed our flights it would work best to go to Craig first.  We don't want to do that as it would increase our chances of taking covid to Chicago with us.  We are still being extra careful until after we return.  Our first dining out experiences will be in Chicago.

If Craig can't make it he will change his flight to Chicago for after the summer break begins.

I hope after eating you still want to return to the restaurant.

I had truffled pulled pork noodles and pork dumplings. Oink. This little piggy is very happy. I would go back.

My epic for the weekend is the five-hour version of Les Miserables filmed in 1934. It’s from Raymond Bernard and it has been beautifully restored.

Watched two of three acts of the ballet A Winter's Tale, based on the Shakespeare play. Same team as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Sets are amazing - Bob Crowley again. I'll finish it up tomorrow.

I am pleased it isn't a one time experience and you will continue to support the restaurant.

Wow.  Was it originally shown as a serial?

For DR slingshot's next dinner party.

Why in the hell would this make a meat and potato man change his mind?  Lose his appetite perhaps!

Our local station is too busy mourning Bevery Cleary to mention Larry McMurtry.

I was so glad that I got to see the original Sullivan Street production of THE FANTASTICKS.  My dear friend, Jerry, who was living in New York at the time was the roommate of the actor playing The Boy (Matt).  We all went out for drinks together after the show.

And now, I'm off to my mom's for our weekly Phase 10 playing.

Be back later.

For the first time in quite a while, I won a game of Phase 10! ;D
