Title: OUT ON A LIMB
Post by: bk on May 18, 2021, 12:03:58 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes went out on a limb, and now it is time for you to post until the out on a limb cows come home.

To this day, EVERY time I read or hear the phrase "Out on a Limb," I instantly think of "Out on a Limerick (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKLRUg5J6nY&t=4s)" from The Mystery of Edwin Drood!

I am awake, but my timing is off this morning. I had a weird dream about the play Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme, which has a character with my name. As Bertolt Brecht once wrote, Oh, don't ask why.

I've had the good fortune to perform Alexander Nevsky. I've always said that the best part of singing in the chorus for that is that you get to sit on the stage, in the midst of the orchestra, during the Battle on the Ice.

As I recall, we had coaching cassettes for the Russian pronunciation.

I don't think I ever tried a powdered toothpaste.

As I recall, my parents always bought Crest, but I'm checking a site that lists old toothpastes and I think we occasionally had Ipana or Gleem. Those are names I haven't heard or thought of in half a century. At some point we must have tried Pearl Drops Tooth Polish that came in a little bottle, and I distinctly remember really liking the taste and the feel of that one. Don't know why I didn't just continue with it.

I have no memory of what I used in college or in my first years after school, but at some point I decided the old Crest-like flavors were boring and I changed to Colgate. Years later my now-current dentist started me on a prescription toothpaste just because she thinks it's better than any of the standard ones. I'm out of it at present and have never been able to remember what it's called. But I'm not choosey and when I'm out of the prescription stuff I use whatever. I like the Arm & Hammer ones as well as my standard Colgate.

Last night, the Bishop and I came to a standstill.  I held out my hand for him to kiss my ring and he did the same.....it was quite the moment.

I think my parents used tooth powder when I was very small....and my grandmother used it....

Then when I got teeth, we became an Ipana family....thanks to Bucky Beaver.

Then we switched to Crest.

When I was in my late teens, I switched to Pearl Drops and within six months had my first two cavities.  I switched back to Crest.  I now use Colgate Whitening Toothpaste in a small bottle.....on my real teeth.

Aside from all the reasons that stuff is bad for you, Bruce complains enough about heartburn/reflux that he should avoid it.

TOD:
I used toothpowder for a while in high school. I didn't find it objectionable at all.

For many years now I've used health-food-store toothpaste. I read about all the stuff in conventional toothpaste and made the switch. SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) is particularly harmful and I don't want it in my mouth. There are many brands available that don't have SLS and all the ones I've tried have been just fine. I avoid mint -- I don't like the taste and it can antidote my homeopathic remedies -- so that really limits my choices. I also don't want fluoride. I have no need for a sweet or tasty toothpaste. Like the old Tom's of Maine commercial said, "If you want something sweet have a dessert."

I have used baking soda toothpaste on and off since I was young.  The last time I used it I decided it wasn't worth it.

I use Colgate, fresh mint, whitening sensitive toothpaste.  DR Jeanne I know, it also has fluoride.

I remember growing up in Los Angeles around 1970, the water was not fluoridated, and I had to take a little fluoride tablet supplement every day. I called it my "little purple pill." I didn't mind, because it tasted good. Probably packed full of sugar.

Had a great dinner at The Smokehouse with Marshall. We both had the special - the filet, which was perfect and I used plenty of Béarnaise sauce on it and over the vegetables - they're not doing the creamed spinach right now so it was a double dose of the vegetables. And a small Caesar to start - all very Keto friendly and not too terrible calorie-wise.
